It is a selfdirected activity for people of all ages which encourages participants to read a children’s picture book in stages while walking along a short path. Owl is lonely until sunrise when she discovers a friendly surprise. Hooray for Today! celebrates playtime, sharing, and friendship. The StoryWalk® begins to the right of the entrance to the Lititz Public Library and moves counterclockwise along the sidewalk around the library property. • Reading Royals – Slapshot’s Winter Reading Challenge. Just about everyone has different ideas and notions of things some think this and others think that is the right thing to do. In other words, that which some people think and say is right and proper and see nothing the matter in it, others think and say that it is wrong and improper. The daughter of one of our neighbors, Becky Saltcreek, comes to our house quite often to see Nancy (not me) and to chat and gossip with her. Becky isn’t as old as my wife, yet she’s no longer a spring chicken. In their conversation, the came to the subject of marrying. My wife asked Becky why she had not married whether she never had a chance or if she never had wanted to marry. This was Becky’s answer: “Oh, yes, I always wanted to and would still like to get married. The right fellow to please me hasn’t come by yet. I’ve had plenty beaus and offers of marriage, but I sacked them all and refused for one or another reason.” “One of the beaus that wanted to marry me was a shoemaker. He was a handsome fellow but he was conceited. He came with his own horse and his own carriage and put on a marvelous show. The second time that he came he asked me to marry him. I said I would consider his offer. Then he said he wanted to make me the most beautiful pair of shoes I have ever had on my feet. Well, I thought, that wouldn’t be so bad and I permitted him to make the measurements. That, however, was the last of the shoemaker.” “When he made the measurements for the shoes, he measured too high and I gave him one to the head that he tumbled to the floor. A few minutes later the shoemaker was sitting in his carriage and that was the last that I saw of him he may never darken my doorway again.” *** In this and in the subsequent Eck, we are reprinting an earlier Alt Schulmeschder column which was printed on January 31, 1903. We suspect that our older readers will appreciate this letter more than our younger readers. Some of Der Alt Schulmeschder letters in the dialect were reprinted in a volume published in Lebanon, PA in 1928 by Frank G. Light, who was the son of Joseph H. Light, “Der Alt Schulmeschder.” However, the columns republished by Frank G. Light had been printed in The Lebanon Daily News and The Lebanon SemiWeekly News (of which Joseph H. Light was editor and part owner) were printed between October 28, 1896 and October 6, 1897. Frank G. Light entitled his reprints: Pennsylvania-German Letters, Penned by Joseph H. Light under the Nom de Plume Der Alt Schulmeschder, Vol. 1. To the best of our knowledge, only one volume of these letters was published. Can any of our readers shed any light on the matter? Was a second volume ever printed? July 11, 1984 Es Bischli-Gnippli

Hinkletown Mennonite Caleb Martin
7th Grade Caleb Martin is in 7th grade at Hinkletown Mennnonite School. His parents are Jeff and Hannah Martin, and he has three siblings. His family goes to Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community. He plays basketball and volleyball on Hinkletown’s teams, and his favorite subjects are science, social studies, gym, and art. He hopes to work at Martin Tree Service when he is older, which is his family’s business. Caleb enjoys being outdoors with friends and family. He likes to ride four wheelers in his free time, even though he once broke his leg riding a four wheeler. There are many trails through the woods around his house that he rides on. He also plays with his many animals (cats, horses, goats, sheep, and a dog) as well as taking care of them. He also likes to hang out with his friends at Keegan, the junior youth group at his church. He is excited about their weekend retreats and the many outdoor games. He also likes to go hunting at his grandparents’ cabin in Juniata County as well as in the woods near his house. He has gotten a six-point buck and a doe so far. While at his grandparents’ cabin, he goes hunting, rides four wheelers, and goes swimming and water skiing on a tube. Caleb likes to spend time outside with his friends, and he is smart and hardworking in school. Caleb Written by: Weston Martin is funny and a great friend to have.

Sophomore Candace Fox is a Sophomore at Ephrata Mennonite School. She is a very nice and fantastic girl, as well as very energetic. If you can’t find her, she’s probably on the volleyball court, because volleyball is one of her favorite hobbies. She’s been on Varsity since Freshman year. Her mom, Cindy Fox, is actually the coach of the EMS Legends Girls Volleyball Team. Not only that, but Candace also loves to sit down with some coffee and a good book beside the fireplace and just chill. She enjoys her quiet time, since she had an adventurous childhood. When she was only three years old, she, her parents, and her younger sister moved to Bangladesh and lived there for three years. She described it as a culture shock even though she was so little. She also mentioned that coming back was almost even more of a shock. One of her biggest memories from her time there was when they would visit the slums and she describes it as “sad and heartbreaking.” Now Candace lives with her parents and her 4 other siblings. THIS WEEK’S
Biblical Message
Never Even Missed It by Pastor John Fredericksen One Sunday, a Christian family of four decided to take two different cars to church. After the service was over, the young boy rode home with his mom while the eightyearold girl
rode with dad. The father and daughter decided to stop at a furniture store to look for a living room set. After a while the dad got in his car and drove home. After a few minutes in the house, the mother asked, “Where’s Emily?” Until that question, the father had not realized that he left the store without his daughter and drove all the way home without her. Despite the solitude in the car, he never missed her until after arriving home. All the way back to the store, the ten yearold brother, who was very angry with his father, kept asking his dad, “How could you have forgotten my sister?”
It is a simple reality that many times the most important things in life are simply forgotten. During the years of Israel’s many kings, a pattern of turning
away from the Lord to false gods persisted. But that changed with one king. Once King Josiah ascended the throne, “he did that which was right in the sight

of the Lord” (II Kings 22:2). “And like unto him there was no king before him, that turned to the Lord with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might” (II Kings 23:25). Josiah became a spiritual reformer, ridding the land of false worship, sinful practices, and leading the nation back to the proper, exclusive worship of Jehovah. This spiritual revival began at the beginning of Josiah’s reign and was built on one primary incident. Josiah instructed trusted people to make needed repairs in Israel’s house of worship, the temple, which had been neglected for many years. In the process of making these

repairs, Hilkiah the high priest made an important discovery. He reported back to King Josiah, “I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord” (II Kings 22:8). Amazingly, God’s chosen and blessed people, Israel, had been without God’s Word for decades. It had been absent in their times of worship, in their homes, in their conversations, in their work place, and in their lives, AND NOBODY EVEN MISSED IT. Over and over in the Old Testament, the Lord instructed Israel to build their lives around the Scriptures. They were to write portions of it on their

door posts, read it daily, diligently teach it to their children, and make it a topic of conversation as they went about their day (Deut. 11:18 20). How could it be that God’s own people could be without God’s Word and not even miss it? No doubt the answer is through a growing neglect of the Scriptures, disinterest in spiritual things, and preoccupation with temporal things, resulting in a cold callousness toward the Lord. It’s a dangerous pattern and a dangerous place to be. Could we today, who know Christ as Savior, come to a place where we have little or none of God’s Word in our lives and never even miss it? Absolutely, and it happens all the time. The same pattern that plagued Israel persists today. We are easily distracted and preoccupied with the temporal distractions of this world. Neglecting time in the Scriptures, or not applying it to our daily lives and conversations, can lead to a growing disinterest in the things of the Lord. It
may be easier to see this in someone else’s life than in our own, but this danger is very real for all of us. What should each of us do to avoid this from happening to us? The first thing is to be awakened to our need to make God and His Word preeminent in our lives. Just as Israel was to read it daily, constantly discuss it, and make it the central part of their worship, so it should be for us. This principle is just as needed today as it was for Israel. The Apostle Paul tells us to “hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love” (II Tim. 1:13). God’s Word in our lives is our lifeline to good spiritual health so “don’t leave home without it” and make it a topic of conversation with family and Christian friends. Finally, don’t neglect the place of worship where God’s Word is rightly divided and where the primary doctrines of grace are recognized to be found in the letters of the Apostle Paul.

Muddy Creek Lutheran Church Dedicates New Elevator
Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Even in the midst of the pandemic, Muddy Creek Lutheran Church in Denver recently celebrated some good news. On Sunday, December 12, the congregation dedicated its new elevator building addition. The historic congregation, founded in 1732, also received the update of a new handicappedaccessible entryway to its Fellowship Hall. “Our sanctuary was always accessible, but the new elevator finally makes our education building and church office accessible for those in wheelchairs and those with limited mobility, including older persons,” said Pastor Peter Schwabe-Fry. The new elevator was dedicated as the congregation rejoiced with a ribbon-cutting, whoopie pies and an “elevator cheer” - “We lift our thanks to God, as God’s blessings come down to us!” Shown with the new elevator, from left to right, are Gail Bare, Mike Leid, Pastor Peter Schwabe-Fry and Nedra Bearinger.

Well, my daughter likes to play with slime (made from glue and other materials), and the glass is the perfect size when set on a table to make a protected, defined work surface. It works! * For every side dish that requires extra preparation time, plan for one or two that don’t. The skin will slip right off. * “Have kids make their own whipped cream with a jam jar! * Along with henna, old-fashioned hair dye ingredients included the blood of black cows and crushed tadpoles in warm oil. * While filming “Jailhouse Rock” in 1957, Elvis Presley inhaled his tooth cap as he slid down a pole in the opening dance number. It lodged in his lung and required surgical removal, but aside from a little hoarseness for a few days, the King made a fairly easy recovery. * Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter getting stuck to the roof of your mouth. * That little white paper strip coming out of the top of Hershey’s Kisses is called a plume and was originally introduced by the company to distinguish the product from phony knockoff candies. * The popular kids’ game “Operation” was invented by John Spinello, a sophomore at the University of Illinois in 1962, as part of

Sadly, he only made $500 off the game after selling the prototype. * By the way, in case you’ve ever wondered, the “patient” in “Operation” is named Cavity Sam. * “Gigi” author SidonieGabrielle Colette could only write after she had plucked all the fleas off her cat. * Many inventions and discoveries have come about through the medium of dreams, including the alternating current generator, the sewing machine, Google, the periodic table and DNA’s double helix spiral form. * If you had to pick a “standard” pencil color, you’d probably think of a yellow-gold shade -- and that’s no accident. When pencils went into mass production in the 1890s, the finest available graphite fillings came from China. Manufacturers wanted everyone to know that they used only the best Chinese graphite, so they painted their pencils yellow, the traditional color of Chinese royalty. * Some adult details made it into the final cut of the PG-rated film “The Santa

The line was removed from future releases of the film. * According to Hasbro, the tallest Jenga tower ever was 40 levels, plus two additional blocks on top. * There have been more than 300 different Kit Kat flavors in Japan, including soy sauce, “European cheese” and wasabi. neurologists use diazepam (Valium) and similar drugs for acute attacks. Pre ventive medicines come in many different families, and the choice of the best agent depends often on other conditions the person has. Everyone with migraine should try to find and avoid triggers. This includes eating on a reasonable schedule and good sleep hygiene. If medications are needed, prescription choices include blood pressure medicines (beta blockers like propranolol and calcium channel blockers), antidepressants and seizure medicines. Over-the-counter options include riboflavin, magnesium, feverfew and coenzyme Q10, all of which have some but not conclusive evidence of benefit superior to placebo. HELP WANTED
DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you shed light on how vestibular migraines are diagnosed and the best treatment? -- J.H. ANSWER: The vestibule of the ear is where the organ of balance is located, so vestibular symptoms relate to balance issues in general, but most common ly, it means vertigo. The term “vestibular migraine” means vestibular symp toms attributed to migraine. Vestibular migraine thus includes migraine head ache -- not everyone will have headache with every episode, but most people with vestibular migraine will have headache with at least some of the episodes -- and vestibular symp toms. These could include vertigo (a sensation of movement when still), unsteadiness or movement symptoms with a change in head position that persists long after the head has moved. Abnormal
sensitivity to sound and vision are also prominent in vestibular migraine. There is a similarly named condition, basilar migraine, that also has vestibular symptoms. However, basilar migraine has additional symptoms seen during the early, or aura, phase coming from the brainstem, deep in the brain, such as clumsy movements or confusion. These occur most commonly five minutes to an hour before the head ache. Making the diagnosis of vestibular migraine is challenging, since there are many clinical entities with similar symptoms. There is no conclusive laboratory or radiology tests to confirm the diagnosis. In practice, the diagnosis of probable vestibular migraine is made in people with recurrent migraine symp toms associated with vertigo. Often, treatment is begun when the condition is considered probable, and if the person does not respond well to treatment, a more thorough evaluation is considered. Treatment for vestibular migraine is broken down into treatment for acute attacks and treatment to prevent attacks. Many

CATS & MICE! Cats outnumber mice by three to one (wonder why?) above. How many of each do you see?
FEATHER-BRAINED NAME SCRAMBLE
THIS test is for the birds, says our parrot friend, above. And he’s right. Scrambled names of nine birds, each missing a letter, appear in rows across.
When letters are added, and names unscrambled, a tenth bird’s name will appear in present blanks reading downward.
This mystery bird is an expert diver and has a voracious appetite. Birds whose names are scrambled (in random order) are crane, condor, martin, petrel, turkey, smew, plover, macaw, grouse.
Puzzle answers can be found on page 2B
How quickly can you name the mystery bird?
