The bags will be available beginning Monday, January 25 through Sunday, Febru ary 14 (Valentine’s Day). There is a cost for each bag and patrons will find them in the entryway of the library, which is located at

REINHOLDS FIRE COMPANY Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese This year’s winter has been fairly quiet with very little snowfall and temperatures that have been quite moderate. This local farm sunrise scene was photographed by our photographer early one morning as temperatures were dropping and virtually no wind could be seen or felt. Our photographer noted that the smoke from the greenhouses was rising from the stacks but only went to a certain height and then moved to the left creating this layer of smoke that seemed locked in on a certain plane. The rising sun was subdued by the layer of smoke allowing it to be captured perfectly. Its warm rays illuminated the walls of the greenhouse and the heavy frost coated the field providing a stark cold contrast with the sun.

and pulse, and in older men, can cause urinary symptoms. He might try plain Claritin, which is just the loratadine, and save the Claritin-D for his worst days. Less pseudoephedrine is probably better. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your comments to I.T. with interest, as I had my gallbladder removed way back in 1968. I feel you left out a side effect that follows the procedure for many patients: the “dump” syndrome, or diarrhea. This result has plagued me and several others for years. I found some relief by taking cholestyramine before eating. -- J.C. ANSWER: LThat’s a very o one I did good point, and not highlight. t “Dumping syndrome” refers to bile s being delivered to the r intestine suddenly, causing diarrhea. It isn’t common, e fortunately, and I, too, have d found that cholestyramine can be veryu effective, in c addition to eating smaller, more-frequente meals. *** d DEAR DR. DEAR DR. ROACH: Should a person be concerned about serious side effects from longterm use of Claritin-D? My son has been using the medication continuously for about nine years. He has had allergy shots, which were minimally helpful. He cannot use nasal rinses or sprays because they cause nosebleeds. He does have some sleeping problems, but since he’s been taking Claritin-D for so long, it’s hard to tell if that medication is the cause. -- M.S. ANSWER: Claritin-D is a combination of the antihistamine loratadine and the decongestant pseudoe phedrine. Loratadine is considered safe in most people. Pseudoephedrine is safe for younger people, but it can raise blood pressure

I just turned 68. For the past couple of months, my ear canals have been very itchy. Also, my wife was constantly cleaning earwax out of my ears. Now for some reason I no longer produce earwax, but my ears itch a lot. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? How do I stop the itching? I have tried olive oil. It seems to work but not really that well. A doctor looked in my ear and said the ear canals look fine. -- R.K. ANSWER: Itching in the ear canals is common, but usually an exam is able to lead the examiner to at least suspect a diagnosis. An incipient ear infection is one common reason, but your issue has been going on for months. Skin conditions that itch, such as eczema, is another common one. The doctor might have seen this, but sometimes the findings are subtle. Just having dry skin is a common cause, especially in winter, and olive oil is one treatment, but if it isn’t working it’s time to stop. I often see people make their problem worse by using inappropriate therapies, especially peroxide, and also by putting objects in the ear to scratch it. This can lead to abrasions, lacerations and worse that I won’t horrify you with. I would get the ear looked at again, and if there still is nothing to see, one treatment is a mild prescription steroid drop for a period of time. Your regular doctor or an ear/nose/throat specialist would be a good choice. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are net carbs really a thing? I understand low impact on blood sugar, but not

measuring net carbs. -- H.C. ANSWER: The “net carbs” number is normally calculated by taking the grams of total carbohydrates and subtracting the grams of fiber and sugar alcohols. It’s an attempt to look at the effect on blood sugar, and it has modest informational benefit. It can be misleading, because some sugar alcohols (ending in “-ol,” like maltitol and xylitol) do increase blood sugar somewhat, though not as much as sugars (which end in “-ose,” like glucose and sucrose). I don’t recommend using the term “net carbs.” I think it’s more important to look at ingredients. Avoid large amounts of added sugar and processed starches. Make sure the carbohydrates you take in come mostly from vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. These are the foundations of a healthy diet, and you don’t need to count numbers. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. “What is your personality type?” may be one of the first things that Rachel Landes will ask someone she meets. She is an eighth grader at Hinkletown Mennonite School. Her dad and mom are Chris and Dawn Landes, and they attend Habecker Mennonite Church. She has an adorable cat named Dobby and really likes to study personalities, draw, and write stories. Rachel’s personality type is INFJ and 4 wing 5, and one of her favorite past times is figuring out the personality type of everyone at school. Rachel Landes is a great friend and is always there to give a personality test if someone is curious what their type is. She wants to make sure that everyone knows, though, that a person’s personality type does not define them, it is just what they most closely relate to. If someone ever wants to know more about personality types, Rachel will always be there to inform them, and tell them what their type is too. Her favorite personality type test is the Myers Brigg Test Indicator. Her second favorite is the Enneagram. Rachel can also give people a personality test herself. Along with personality types, she also enjoys playing her instruments. Rachel says that people who are an INFJ and 4 wing 5 are very artistic, which is true in Rachel’s case. She loves to play the ukulele, piano, and the guitar. She has also written some songs and enjoys listening to music. Her favorite song is “Oceans” by Hillsong United. Like her personality type suggests, Rachel is not only good at music, she is also really good at art and loves to draw and paint. Rachel hopes to use her talents in the future, where she might be an artist or musician part-time. She is a great friend Written by: and someone that people should defiKirsten Hess nitely get to know.
Weaver Ephrata Mennonite
Averi Weaver Senior
If feisty were a person, it would be Averi. Averi Weaver is one of the craziest, most studious, and determined people out there. A fun fact about Averi is that she is a twin. Her twin sister is Nandri Weaver. However, Averi is the oldest and of course will not let Nandri forget it. Averi is a senior at Ephrata Mennonite School and is looking forward to graduating in the spring. She does quite well in school considering she has all A’s! Bible and Literature are her favorite classes due to the fact that it involves discussion. “We learn a lot of life lessons,” she claims. The best part of school for her is the social aspect, which she fulfills quite well. Outside of school, she has taken on the great sports of volleyball and basketball. Once graduated from Ephrata, Averi has the goal of being a missionary in India. However, due to current circumstances, the possibility is still up in the air. On Sundays, Averi can be found attending her home congregation, Meckville Mennonite Church. When posed the question, “If you were to change something in the world today, what would it be?” She answered, “I would decrease the number of orphans in the world.” Two people she admires most in her life are her parents. She gives her reasoning with this statement: “They taught me many life lessons, and they help me in hard times.” Averi Weaver is tremendously appreciated around EMS. Her excellent attitude Written by: for hard work has set her up to become Kassidy a lifelong learner. Keep up the good work Zimmerman Averi!

THIS WEEK’S
Biblical Message
Real Meditation Author: Wenger Scripture: Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise,
dwell on these things.” Last week we considered truth; the ultimate truth is God’s word. We are to read it, study it, obey it, share it, and meditate on it. Let’s consider the other imperatives in our verse as well. Next is: “Whatever is honorable.” The word means “that which inspires reverence or awe, dignified, worthy of respect.” Semnós (an adjective, is derived from sébomai, “to revere, be in awe”) – properly, what is august (dignified, has “gravitas”); weighty, deeply respected, viewed as majestic (having “gravity”); grave. The word is also translated noble and is used
in 1st Timothy of leaders in the church to be dignified, then Paul adds, not double tongued. This same word is also used in Timothy again
of women and then goes on to say, not gossips. Honorable is not the happygolucky, back slapping, never take life

Our Lord came not to be served, but to serve. Meditate on putting others first, demonstrate integrity, being honest, principled, ethical and blameless. If we meditate on these virtues we will be become like them. “As a person thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7) Whatsoever is Right is our next imperative. The Greek word is díkaios (righteous, just). It describes what is in conformity to God’s own being (His will, standard of rightness); hence “upright.” In a wide sense, upright, righteous, virtuous, keeping the commands of God. In this day we live in, there is an absolute

seriously world view of life. It’s a deep, sober and weighty understanding of life. It seems we know little of honor in life today. The military personnel come to mind; fully dressed in uniform; they obey the commands, follow orders, perform valiantly in battle, uphold the constitution, and at the end of their career they get an honorable discharge. We have to meditate on the honorable things in life, the noble words, thoughts and deeds. I also think of judges. We all rise when they come into the courtroom to show honor and respect. I also think of Mother Teresa; always putting others first; serving others is honorable.

abhorrence for that which is right. Right for you and right for me are two different things…NOT SO. There is right, there is wrong, there is evil, there is good, there is true and there is false. This is not to say there is no room for differences, compromise and concessions. It is impossible to live without a standard and the word of God is that standard for a believer. You need a standard unit of measure for weights, distance and speed. Try making a new dish but don’t follow the recipe, just throw
whatever you feel like into the mixing bowl. Try to build a skyscraper without plans or a standard unit of measurements. Our universe runs on a very precise set of measurements, nothing is abstract. We first have to believe there even is a right and wrong. This is a very unpopular concept and many will be averse to absolutes, but the word of God stands alone… “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for

Humorous Display Brings Smiles And Lots Of Laughs
Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Every day seems to include some new challenge we have to deal with and being constantly stressed is certainly not a healthy way to live. From the seemingly never-ending Coronavirus and the economic and health challenges it brought with it, to the current unrest we see in our country, there has never been a time quite like this where the power of prayer is providing comfort to so many and offering hope for the future. This poor mannequin in Ephrata is clinging to the spouting after his ladder fell. He was removing Christmas lights and is probably in need of prayer right now, or a pat on the back for making those passing by do a double take and burst into laughter after they realize it’s all just a fun seasonal display!

Vernon Inn, was built in 1854 by Martin S. Gross (1808-1877) and his wife Fianna S. (born about 1817), and stood on the southeast corner of the Ephrata square. The Mt. The Reinholds Fire Company has been serving their community for over 100 years. Their first meeting was held in 1914 with their first engine being delivered in 1915. Today, 35 active members respond to an average of 135 calls a year in their coverage area that includes portions of West Cocalico and East Cocalico Townships. The department also responds to calls in surrounding Townships and Boroughs and into Berks County. The members train every Monday night, with the company meeting being held the first Monday of each month. Annual training is also held for Haz-Mat Operations, SCBA and First Aid CPR. In addition to training, members participate in annual fire prevention programs at local schools. DIFFERENT PAIR OF GLASSES: Everyone has a unique frame of reference. Encourage kids to see things from another point of view. SHARE WHAT YOU LOVE WITH KIDS: Parents and other significant adults in their lives are kids’ No. 1 teachers. You’re an expert on something. Share your talent or hobby with kids. TEACH, BUT NEVER STOP LEARNING: Learning is a two-way street. Don’t know how to snowboard? Having trouble with an app you just downloaded? Chances are your kids can help you out. Serve garnished with an apple slice design, parsley or chives. APPLE SLICE DESIGNS Slice an apple in half through the middle crosswise. Cut several thin, round slices from each of the halves. Set them on a cutting board, and let your child press tiny cookie cutters through the middle core section of each slice -leaving a cute shape in the middle. Discard the cut-out pieces containing seeds and the core. Nibble on the rest! TIP: To encourage healthy apple snacking, keep an assortment of small cookie cutters on hand and use them for making “apple-slice designs.” Use tiny pumpkins in fall, Christmas-tree and star-shaped cookie cutters in December, a snowman in January, a heart in February and a bunny for spring. *** Make Marbleized Paper at Family Wrap Party Whether we’re children or adults, we all like to feel useful and part of the holiday festivities. Here’s the fun: To make four 4-inchtall candles, use scissors or a pizza cutter to cut the sheet of beeswax into four rectangles measuring 4 inches by 8 inches. (Assist young children.) Place one beeswax rectangle on the working table. Lay a 5-inch wick on the short edge of the beeswax with 1 inch hanging over one edge. Using the tips of your fingers, gently but firmly roll the beeswax forward over the wick. Be sure it is tight. Here’s where you might add a little warm breath on the wax. It will soften so that the first roll is snug. Now, roll the wax over and over down to the end until it forms a candle. Done! Hold the candle upright, and push the end opposite the wick lightly down on the table to flatten the base. Trim wick. Make several candles for gift-giving. Simply tie them together with ribbon and tuck in a gift bag with a personalized tag. You may wish to save one or two for your own family,

* N.B. of Texas, writes: “I never could find the time to exercise. When I got home, I had to rush to get supper, etc., and afterward all I wanted to do was plop down and watch television. Then I got an exercise mat and a stationary bicycle. When I couldn’t work out very long, I worked out during commercials. I’ve lost 3 pounds so far!” Great idea for all those with fitness on their New Year’s Resolution lists, Nancy! * Two wonderful tips came in from G.K. of Minnesota: “To protect floors from being damaged by chairs being pushed around, glue rounds of carpeting beneath the chair legs. They are easily removed for replacing as they wear down. Also, when making bread or rolls, warm the flour in the oven or microwave so as not to chill the butter. The dough will rise faster.” * B.W. of Colorado swears
by brake cleaner to get rid of bad spots on carpets. “Regular automotive brake cleaner on the spot and a clean rag will remove almost all stains,” he says. * “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- B.M. in New York * If your animals try to get out when you go into or out of the house, keep some toys or treats in your pocket or near the door to throw across the room, giving you a few seconds to slip in or out. * As tax time draws closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all taxrelated forms and receipts in the envelope as they come in. This way, when you are ready to start your taxes, all items will be together and easy to find. * Cooking a recipe with garlic and onions to start? Invite me to dinner! But first, remember to let the onions cook to nearly translucent
before adding the garlic, which cooks much faster. If you put both in at the same time, the garlic will burn before the onions have a chance to deepen their flavor. * “For chores, I write tasks on sticky notes and put them up on our family board. The kids choose the things they want to do, and when they are done to my satisfaction I sign their ticket. At the end of the week, they can bring me the tickets to pay
out. This is for extra money, so they don’t have to do it; I don’t have to chase them, and I don’t have to keep track of it either.” -- E.L. in Montana * Every so often, use a very diluted bleach solution to rinse out your reusable water bottles. Put them on a bottle rack to air dry completely before sealing them back up. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
