Children’s Ministry Builds Bridges To Light The Way
Building Bridges to Light the Way is this year’s message for the Advent Season from Children’s Ministry at Peace United Church of Christ. This project encourages the
congregation to connect or reconnect with individuals, family, community and the world in various ways. Stars, lanterns, candles and light bulbs will symbolize hoped for connections to light up
the sky around the bridge. Everyone is encouraged to make a connection and contribute to the sky by taping a “light symbol” to the wall throughout Advent. Connections to the
community will be the emphasis during the third week of Advent. New blankets will be collected to stock the outdoor chest with free blankets for anyone

Lititz Historical Foundation Program
Join the Lititz Historical Foundation at the Lititz Public Library on Saturday, January 28 at 1:30 p.m. for a community presentation.
They will be welcoming local historian and author Donald Kautz.
This presentation takes a brief stroll through the history along the Conestoga River. They will consider the historic conditions along the Conestoga, and they will look at the effects that settlement of the county has had on the river and what steps can be taken to ensure that the generations to come
are able to enjoy this natural beauty.
The Conestoga River meanders for sixty miles through the fertile farmlands of Lancaster County. From early Native American inhabitants to the European settlers who made the Conestoga Valley their home, the river has provided sustenance and transportation for generations. Victorian era resorts and hotels were built along the river, providing new recreational activities as steam power drove innovative forms of transportation and waterpower.
As the region developed and the population grew, the river paid a heavy price in increased pollution from sewage runoff and industry. Conservation efforts toward

Sparrow Family Medicine Now Open In Akron
Sparrow Family Medicine is a direct primary care practice that opened their Akron-based office in December of 2022.
Originally founded in October of 2022, Sparrow Family Medicine is a membership-based practice, rather than insurance-based. Benefits of a membershipbased practice include: Visits customized to your needs, after-hours access to your physician, transparent pricing and additional savings on things like lab work and imaging.
Owner/founder Candice Cavicchia Miller (MD) is a graduate of Messiah College and Jefferson Medical College. Her experience in the field of medicine includes time at a local family practice and Lancaster General Hospital. She started the business because she wanted to care for patients without the limitations of insurancebased practices.
Dr. Cavicchia Miller states, “When I or my family members are sick, I want to know that someone cares for my family like I do. Everyone deserves to have that someone, and that is
why I created Sparrow. I value the old school patient to physician relationship that is now so challenging to provide in an insurancebased practice.”
The cost for membership varies according to age. Contact Sparrow Family Medicine for special introductory specials for the month of January.
Sparrow Family Medicine is hosting an event to commemorate their joining of the Akron business community, and to celebrate their opening. Join Dr. Candice Cavicchia Miller and her Medical Assistant Kayla Feathers on Friday, January 27, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for this special event. Highlights include delicious food, cake, door
prizes, balloons and a special drawing contest for kids.
Sparrow Family Practice is located at 240 North 7th Street, Suite 500, Akron, PA 17501. They can be reached at 717-478-3850 or at www. sparrowfamilymedicine. com. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., by appointment only.

Der Ehrlich Schtorkipper
By Dave Hannbariyer
Wann ebber kumme is fer Brod: Wann du mich frogscht fer Brod, gewwich dir net en Schtee.
Ee Daag hen die Cronies darich’s Fenschder geguckt. Der Schtorkipper is nunnergebickt un hot eeni vum Haufe unnich em Disch abgnumme.
“Wass witt fer selli brau Geilsdeck?” - “Selli is finf Daaler.” - “Hoscht ebbes besser as wie sell?” - “Ya,” saagt der ehrlich Schtorkipper un hot eeni grickt vum same Haufe. “Selli is besser. Was witt fer selli blohi Geilsdeck?” - “Selli kummt zu fuffzeh Daaler.” - “Sell is viel besser, awwer ich het garn es bescht as ich finne kann.”
Not is der ehrlich Schtorkipper zum same Haufe gange unnich em Disch un hot en scheeni, rodi rausgeroppt.

Their hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 10:00
“Nau des is es bescht as es gebt.” - “Wie viel is selli?”“Selli koscht funf un zwansich Daaler.”
All de Cronies ihre Ohre warre uff fer heere was der ehrlich Schtorkipper saagt. Der Schtorkipper hot’s Geld so langsam in die Schupplaad gesehlt un dabei gsaat:

help with the harsh winter and scarcity they are facing. The children and youth of the church will be taking the winter items to the Bethany Slavic Church for shipment to Ukraine.
The participation of the congregation has been tremendous and everyone is encouraged to be that light to others as bridges are built in so many ways. Let God’s light shine through these efforts.

The Honest Storekeeper
The honest storekeeper had an old-looking store in a wooded area. He had an old-fashioned stove, a cheese box for a cuspidor, pail kegs to sit on, a checkerboard and such objects as one finds in old stores. The farmers and the townfolk sat about there and chatted.
That storekeeper was an honest fellow, but he had cheated a few people with some sharp practices. Every time that he sold something, as he placed the money into the cash drawer, he quoted a verse from Scripture. When a child came in: Blessed are the little children. After a woman had bought soap: Blessed are the pure in heart. When someone came for bread: If you ask me for bread, I will not give you a stone.
One day the cronies who were gathered in the store looked through the window. Outside they saw a fellow with a fancy carriage who was tying up his horse. The fancy fellow came in and asked, “Have you a horse blanket for sale?” - “Yes,” said the honest storekeeper, “I have.” Then the fancy fellow said, “May I see them?” The storekeeper bent over and took one from a pile under the counter.
“How much would you like to have for that brown horse blanket?” - “That one is five dollars.” - “Do you have anything better than that?” - “Yes,” said the honest storekeeper and got another from the same pile. “That one is better. How much do you want for that blue horse blanket?” - “That one comes to $15.” - “That one is much better, but I’d like the best one I can find.”

Safety Renovations And Modifications For Seniors’ Homes
Feeling safe and secure at home is a priority for any homeowner. But safety is of particular concern for aging men and women who are at greater risk of being involved in accidents at home than younger men and women.
Harvard Health Publishing says that accidents at home are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. The chances for fatalities increases as one ages, and by age 75 and older, men and women are almost four times as likely to die in a home accident as people a decade younger.
As people age, their balance, eyesight and general physical abilities can begin to diminish. Furthermore, a fall or incident that may only bruise a younger individual can cause more serious breaks or damage for seniors, resulting in potentially lengthy recovery
times. The Home Care Assistance organization says that one million elderly people are
or the homes of their aging loved ones can retrofit such properties to make them safer.

According to The Senior Social Club, which offers care and community services to seniors, falls are the most common accidents affecting seniors. One out of every three seniors aged 65 and older falls at least once a year.
In addition to working with doctors to improve mobility and modify medications that may cause unsteadiness, changes around the home can help. Grab bars placed in bathrooms and hightraffic areas can help seniors get stay more stable when changing from sitting to standing positions.
placed near molding can help guide seniors to the bathroom during midnight visits.
Physical limitations
Arthritis can impede seniors’ ability to turn on and off appliances, water faucets or handle certain kitchen tools. Kitchen and bathroom modifications can include the installation of ergonomic and user-friendly handles and spigots.
Task lighting can make it easier to prepare meals, and appliances that automatically turn off after a certain period of time can be a safety feature for forgetful individuals.
Reorganize kitchen cabinets to make commonly used items as accessible as possible.
Expanded Help for Veteran Caregivers
The Department of Veterans Affairs is giving a helping hand to veteran caregivers of all eras. The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) has been expanded to include eligible veterans who served after May 7, 1975, and before Sept. 11, 2001.
At-home caregivers have been the glue that held together any number of veteran programs, and now more of them will get the assistance they need.
The program assists caregivers with health insurance and access to health care through CHAMPVA, peer support, respite care (30 days per year), education and training, financial assistance and monthly stipend, certain travel expenses, resources and more.
The program includes both primary and secondary (backup) caregivers, although there are different services for secondary.
At the same time, the VA is extending the length of time that Legacy participants, veterans and their caregivers can stay eligible for the program. This date now runs through Sept. 30, 2025. “Legacy” means that a veteran was designed as eligible before Oct. 1, 2020.

Potential tripping hazards should be assessed. Area rugs without nonskid backings, clutter on floors, extension cords that extend into walking areas, and uneven flooring pose tripping hazards. Anti-slip coatings can be added to floors to reduce the risk of tripping.
Poorly lit staircases and entryways also can contribute to falls. Consider the installation of motionactivated lighting so that dim areas can be automatically brightened when necessary. A nightlight or LED lights
Smart Homes
Friends or family members can have greater control over seniors’ homes by installing smart home systems. This way they can remotely adjust thermostats, control lights, view cameras, engage locks or alarm systems, and much more without having to be at the home. This can seniors allow seniors to maintain their independence while offering peace of mind to their loved ones.
Certain home modifications can reduce seniors’ injury risk.
Eligible veterans include those who had a serious injury or a serious illness during active duty during any service era. The veteran must have a disability rating of 70% or higher, have been discharged or have a medical discharge and need at least six months of personal care services for assistance such as feeding, supervision, safety and bathing.
To learn more about the Caregiver Support Program, call them at 855260-3274 on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST, and on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
For an online application and specific eligibility criteria, go to www. va.gov/family-member-benefits/ comprehensive-assistance-forfamily-caregivers. Look for the link to VA Form 10-10CG. In addition, the veteran needs to be enrolled in VA health care. Apply for that on VA Form 10-10EZ on that same webpage. Don’t send any medical records with your applications. The VA will ask for those later.

257 VETERANS POST #12345_20221031 FOR RELEASE OCT. 31, 2022 By Freddy Groves
The Various Types Of Glaucoma And Their Symptoms
Eyesight is important but easily taken for granted. Few people can imagine life without their eyesight, but hundreds of millions of people across the globe experience compromised vision every year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. In fact, estimates from the World Glaucoma Association indicated that 79.6 million individuals would experience glaucoma in 2020. By 2040, that figure is expected to rise to 111.8 million people.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology®, glaucoma usually results from the buildup of fluid in the front part of the eye. As that fluid builds up, it increases the pressure in the eye, ultimately damaging the optic nerve.
Are all glaucomas the same?
All glaucomas are not the same, and the AAO notes that there are two major types of the disease: primary open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma.
• Primary open-angle glaucoma: The most common type of the disease, primary open-angle glaucoma develops gradually. Eyes affected by primary openangle glaucoma do not drain fluid as well as they should, resulting in the buildup of pressure that slowly starts to damage the optic nerve.
• Angle-closure glaucoma: Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when a person’s iris is very close to the drainage angle in his or her eye. The AAO says that this proximity can block the drainage angle, causing pressure to build up
very quickly. However, the AAO also notes that many people with angle-closure glaucoma develop it very slowly and have no idea they
have it until they’ve suffered severe damage.
What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
The symptoms of glaucoma differ depending on which type a person has.
According to the AAO, there are no obvious symptoms in the early stages of open-angle glaucoma. Blind spots develop in patients’ peripheral vision as the disease progresses. Because people often do not experience symptoms until the damage from open-angle glaucoma has become severe, the AAO urges adults to schedule routine eye exams with an ophthalmologist so the disease can be found before any significant damage has occurred.
Blurred vision, halos, mild headaches, or eye pain are some early symptoms of an angle-closure glaucoma attack. However, the AAO notes that people with angle-closure glaucoma do not typically notice any
symptoms until the attack has started. As a result, the AAO urges anyone experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms to contact their ophthalmologist immediately. Once an angleclosure glaucoma attack has begun, symptoms may include:
• severe pain in the eye or forehead
• redness of the eye
• decreased vision or blurred vision
• nausea
• vomiting
No one is immune to glaucoma, which can quickly rob otherwise healthy individuals of their vision.
Learning to recognize the early signs of glaucoma and seeking prompt treatment can reduce the likelihood of substantial vision loss.

Signs Of Unsafe Driving
A license to drive has long been symbolic of independence. Teenage drivers long for the day they earn their licenses and can take to the road without mom or dad riding shotgun, while aging drivers want to keep driving as long as possible so they can come and go as they please in their golden years.
There’s no formula drivers and their families can employ to determine when it’s time to take the car keys away from senior citizens. Thankfully, fatal collisions involving older drivers have declined considerably in recent decades.
According to the Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety, collision-related fatalities among drivers ages 70 and older declined by 15 percent between 1997 and 2018. A host of factors have no doubt contributed to that decline, including lane-assist technology and forward collision warning systems that have become standard offerings on many modern vehicles.
As much as technology has helped make driving safer for everyone, aging drivers should still keep an eye out for certain signs that may indicate their skills behind the wheel are diminishing and potentially compromising their ability to drive safely. According to AARP, the following are warning signs of unsafe driving.

How To Shop For Assisted Living Facilities
As people age, oftentimes their living arrangements need to be adjusted. Needs evolve as children move out or other situations arise. One of the scenarios that may come to pass as a person ages is the need for more specialized help that just isn’t possible at home.
When failing physical or mental health affects one’s ability to be independent and live safety at home, moving into an assisted living facility may be the next step. The National Center for Assisted Living indicates assisted living offers the little bit of help some people need when they can no longer manage living alone. Typically these facilities provide assistance with bathing or dressing, medication management and other care, while also cater-
ing to people who may not require the around-the-clock medical care most often associated with nursing homes.
Vetting is an important component of finding assisted living facilities. Family caregivers need to educate themselves about services, costs and other
resources provided by assisted living facilities.
AARP says assisted living facilities provide residents with a range of services that can include supervision, meals, housekeeping, laundry, and personal care.
Residents usually have their own apartments or private rooms. Because they are mostly regulated at state level in the United States, there is a lot of variety among these facilities. That means family caregivers need to assess their needs and desires in a facility to find the right one that fits.
Assisted living facilities offer a home-like environment, and the amenities
available vary based on cost.
Paying for assisted living differs from paying for nursing homes. Largely government-subsidized health programs like Medicare and Medicaid pay for nursing home care. Those who would be best serviced by assisted living may find they may not qualify for government support, nor may the facilities accept anything other than private payment or long-term care insurance to cover room and board.
Other considerations in assisted living facilities are size, specialties, atmosphere, location, and the ability to transition to higher forms of care. Assisted living may fill a void currently, but it’s often not a permanent situation for all, and eventually certain residents may have to move on to skilled care facilities.
Potential residents and their families should visit various assisted living facilities to get a feel for what they are like. Speak with the staff and residents, request a meal and get a sense of the environment.

Signs Of Unsafe Driving
• Delayed response to unexpected situations: Frequent close calls and narrowly avoiding collisions when other drivers stop suddenly indicate reduced response time that
can put aging drivers at an elevated risk of being involved in an accident.
• Becoming easily distracted while driving: Distracted driving has become a significant concern in recent decades, but it’s often associated with young drivers. However, aging drivers who are easily distracted also pose a safety risk to themselves and other motorists.

...Enjoying Life!
• Decrease in confidence while driving: Only drivers will know if they feel confident enough to drive safely, and it’s vital that aging drivers be honest with themselves when assessing how they feel when driving.
• Having difficulty moving into or maintaining the correct lane of traffic: Laneassist technology can help drivers recognize how often
they’re staying in the correct lane of traffic. When the warning bell goes off frequently, it might be time for older drivers to reconsider if it’s safe for them to be behind the wheel.
• Hitting curbs when making right turns or backing up: Hitting curbs when turning or backing up indicates drivers may be having difficulty controlling
their vehicles and/or seeing the road, both of which indicate it’s no longer safe for drivers to get behind the wheel.
• Getting scrapes or dents on car, garage or mailbox: These signs also indicate drivers are having trouble controlling their vehicles.
• Driving too fast or too slow for road conditions: This indicates drivers are not as alert to their

Things To Consider Before Downsizing Your Home
Once their kids have left the nest, many men and women over 50 begin to consider downsizing their homes. Downsizing to a smaller home can be beneficial for a variety of reasons, including less home to clean and maintain, more affordable utility bills and lower property taxes. But the decision to downsize is rarely black and white, and men and women often struggle with that decision. Perhaps the most difficult part of the decision of whether or not to downsize to a smaller home concerns the sentimental attachment many homeowners, especially those with children, have to their homes. The home might be too big for your current needs, but it also was the same place where your son took his first steps. Saying goodbye to a place that was home to so many memories
isn’t easy. But there’s more than just sentimental value to consider when deciding whether or not to downsize your home after the kids have grown up and moved out.
• Personal finances. Your financial situation merits significant consideration when deciding if the time is right to downsize your home. If your retirement nest egg is not as substantial as you would like it to be, then it would seem as though downsizing to a smaller, more affordable home is a great opportunity for you to start catching up on your retirement savings. But that’s only true if your new home won’t incur any additional expenses that are already taken care of in your current home. For example, your current home may be fully furnished, while a new, smaller home may require
you to buy all new furniture because your existing items simply won’t fit. The cost of such furnishings can be considerable. If you plan to move into a condominium, you can expect to pay monthly homeowners association fees, and such fees are often substantial. So while the condo itself might be smaller, the additional expenses associated with the property may end up making
the smaller home more expensive and prevent you from saving more money for retirement.
• Real estate market. There are seller’s markets and there are buyer’s markets, and ideally you would like to sell your home in a seller’s market. But keep in mind that this might be the same market in which you hope to buy a new home.
The nature of the real estate market depends on a host of factors, including geography. If the city or town where you currently live is in the midst of a seller’s market and you are planning on moving to a location where buyers have the upper hand, then now might be a great time to move. But if you currently live in a buyer’s market and hope to move to a seller’s market, then you may end up paying a steep price, even when downsizing to a smaller home. Things may even themselves out if you want to downsize to a smaller home within your current community, but do your homework nonetheless, researching the time of year when you’re most likely to get the most for your home and find the best deal on your next place. The advantage men and women considering downsizing have is that they are rarely in a rush to move out of their current home and into their next one. This gives them ample time to make the real estate market work for them.
• Space. How much space do you really need? Once the
kids have moved out, couples may feel like all of that extra space is going to waste. But that can be a knee-jerk reaction, and upon a more thorough examination of the space and your needs you may just find that you can put all of that extra square footage to good use after all. If you have always wanted your own art studio, then now might be the perfect time to make that a reality. Always wanted a room devoted to home theater? Get to work on converting your basement to your own private movie theater. If, after considering the space in your home, you find that the extra square footage really is just upkeep you aren’t especially interested in doing, then you would no doubt like a cozier home that’s less of a responsibility to maintain.
Downsizing a home is something many men and women over 50 consider after their children have moved out. Such a decision is rarely easy, so homeowners should take as much time as they need before making a final decision to move or stay put.

When Weight Loss May Be Considered Worrisome
Dieting is a way of life for many people. The Boston Medical Center says an estimated 45 million Americans go on a diet each year, spending $33 billion annually on weight loss products. However, for one segment of the population — the elderly — weight loss can be a sign of something wrong.
The Mayo Clinic says that malnutrition is a serious health concern among seniors. Inadequate nutrition can result in weight loss that has far-reaching health effects. These include a compromised immune system, which increases the risk of infections, poor wound healing and muscle weakness that can result in falls and fractures.
Malnutrition also can lead to further disinterest in eating, which only compounds a weight loss problem. Weight loss and loss of appetite are common among seniors, particularly those with dementia. Learning to recognize weight loss signs in the elderly can help others act promptly to correct the problem.
According to senior care advocate and placement center A Place for Mom, the senior population is at risk of
malnutrition for several reasons, including:
• lack of energy to cook, • specific health conditions that impact ability to prepare or acquire meals, • lack of appetite attributed to decreased taste bud function or depression, • inability to afford quality foods, and • side effects of certain medications.
Unfortunately, malnutrition is a very common, yet widely undiagnosed,
problem among seniors. If a friend or loved one has visible bones under the skin; loose dentures; loose rings on fingers; has dropped clothing sizes; or is leaving food on his or her plate, they may be suffering from malnutrition. Concerned loved ones can take several steps to determine if their friend or family member is malnourished.
• Observe loved ones’ eating habits at home to see how they are eating. Routinely check the refrig-
erator and pantry to see which foods your loved one is eating. In a nursing home setting, check with a nursing administrator to see how mealtimes are going.
• Speak with doctors to see if weight loss is a side effect of medications or another health concern. Bring up any concerns you have about malnutrition.
• Provide finger food or easy-to-manage foods for seniors who have lost dexterity so they’re still able to feed themselves.
• Encourage foods that are fortified with nutrients. Supplementation with nutritional shakes can help fill the void.
• Make meals social events so that the concept of gathering around the table for food is fun.
• Mild or moderate exercise can stir up one’s appetite. Walking or chair-based exercises can help make people more interested in food.
• Introduce new foods that can whet the appetite.
Weight loss can benefit some people. But among the elderly, weight loss may be a by-product of malnutrition.
Fighting Fibromyalgia Pain
As the body ages, aches and pains might become more difficult for men and women to handle. While not all pain is indicative of a disorder or condition, aging women who experience pain may be suffering from fibromyalgia. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases notes that fibromyalgia is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain. While anyone can get fibromyalgia, the NIAMS that between 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed are women and that sufferers are most often diagnosed in middle age. Other than prescribed medication, there are some additional ways to combat that pain as well.
• Get enough sleep. The NIAMS says the getting enough sleep can help ease the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. To ensure a better night’s sleep, women can adopt sleep schedules so they go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, including on weekends and
during vacations. Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, as both substances can make it more difficult to sleep soundly. In addition, avoid reading or working while in bed, as such activities can stimulate the body.
• Exercise regularly. Exercising while in pain may seem counterintuitive, but the NIAMS notes that numerous studies have indicated that regular exercise is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia. When beginning a new exercise regimen, take things slowly at first, gradually building up your endurance levels as your body acclimates itself to exercise.
• Change your diet. Some women suffering from fibromyalgia have reported feeling better when they began to avoid certain foods.
The AARP notes that foods such as red grapes and cherries and herbs and spices, such as ginger and turmeric, can help aging women combat pain.
• Examine your work space. Replace desk chairs if they do not provide adequate support and speak with an occupation therapist regarding other ways to make work stations more comfortable.

Does Your Heart Murmur?
by Pastor John Frederickson
After high school, I worked in a huge plant that employed thousands. Four gals from my high school worked there also, so we began sharing lunch breaks. However, one of them was
constantly negative. Nearly everything out of her mouth was a complaint about something or someone, and it had a negative effect on the others in the group. It was depressing just listening to it all. After nearly a week, I decided I simply wouldn’t be around them any more.
God’s children of faith are not immune to a complaining spirit. When Moses was sent back to Egypt to deliver Israel out of cruel slavery, the Israelites repeatedly complained. Even a chance at freedom should have brought appreciation. But after finally being miraculously released, Israel murmured (meaning “to grumble”) against Moses when Pharaoh’s armies
pursued them. Later “the people murmured against Moses” over a lack of water (Ex. 15:24). Then while in “the wilderness of Sin,” they murmured over a lack of food (16:1-4). It had become
a pattern of life.
When God promised victory over the inhabitants in Canaan, they once again murmured in disbelief that God would give the victory
(Num. 14). God’s anger was so kindled that an entire generation, except for Joshua and Caleb, perished without seeing the Promised Land. Paul refers to this in 1 Corinthians 10:10 warning the believers: “Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.”
Complaining is a dangerous, negative habit. It embitters the soul, sours the spirit, ignores the rich blessings of God, and robs one of the joy of life. It also unnecessarily makes life miserable for those around us, becomes a poor testimony to the lost, and poisons our outlook on life. Perhaps, worst of all, it spreads like an outbreak
of the flu to others, who, in turn, mirror this negativity. Simply put, God hates a complaining spirit. Paul warns the saints at Philippi saying, “Do all things without murmurings and disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked…nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world” (Phil. 2:14-15).
It is not possible for us to be blameless before the Lord nor man if we have a complaining spirit. Ask someone today to hold you accountable any time you are being negative, then purposely practice being positive in your speech and outlook.

Then the honest storekeeper went back to the same pile under the counter and picked out a lovely red one. “Now this is the best that there is.” - “How much is that one?” - “That one costs $25.” - “I’ll take it,” he said.
Now all this bothered the assembled cronies. They wanted to see what the honest storekeeper would say when he put the money into the cash drawer - gained by cheating the stranger.

This week we bring to a close a series of three columns devoted to stories heard, recorded and sent to us by Dave Hornberger of King Street in Ephrata. Dave has set a splendid example for the rest of our readers who can recall such anecdotes and stories. We urge you to write them down and send them to us. If you are unable to do that, speak them onto a cassette and send us the cassette. We’ll transcribe your stories and return the cassette to you. This is an excellent way to entertain our readers. AT THE SAME TIME WE ARE PRESERVING AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH FOLK CULTURE!!!

Weston Martin 8th Grade
Weston Martin is a student in the 22-23 8th grade class here at Gehmans Mennonite School. He also attends Heritage Mennonite Church.
One of the things Weston enjoys doing is building model cars. Another hobby of Weston’s is fishing. His main target is catfish.
A few of the sports Weston enjoys are spikeball and basketball.
Here at GMS, Weston takes part in the school newspaper, Echoes. Weston’s favorite subjects are science and PE. Weston states that, “anything with sports is fun.”
When asked if he could change anything in the world today, Weston replied, “I would send more help to third-world countries.”
Weston’s greatest accomplishment is winning the water balloon catching/ throwing contest at the Ephrata Fair.
For the future, Weston hopes to attend Terre Hill Mennonite High School and states that the most admirable people he knows are his parents because they do practically everything for him.
When teenagers gain an interest in self-improvement, the majority find themselves setting goals or learning new skills. Others work hard on their confidence by going to the gym and following healthy habits.
Grant Kauffman, a junior at Garden Spot High School, found a spark to become the best version of himself.
Kauffman, an aspiring teen fitness influencer, hopes to inspire others, too.
“For me, it’s important to feel confident in anything you do. The gym is almost my second home; I’ve made a lot of new friends and met amazing people with the same goals.” Kauffman said.
When Kauffman was younger, he–like a lot of young people–struggled with self-confidence. “I saw that my mental health affected me by how I looked at myself in the mirror. Once I started weightlifting in eighth grade, I never looked back.”
Kauffman’s main influence for starting his fitness journey is his older brother, Gavin. He suggested to Kauffman that he should pick up the weights at a young age so he can get a head start on those his age who don’t work out.
“At his age, I’ve never seen somebody so committed to something that most teenagers dread doing.” Gavin said about his brother Grant.
The rise of social media has benefited those wanting to start getting into fitness. With applications such as Instagram and TikTok, the desire for teenagers to start weightlifting has grown exponentially.
Most teenagers are inspired by fitness influencers and use them as a way to help guide those in the right direction. Grant Kauffman dreams of becoming an influencer and role model for young teenagers who strive to better themselves.

E. Main St.,
* On January 25, 1533, England’s King Henry VIII secretly married Anne Boleyn. The bride was pregnant with the future Queen Elizabeth I, and the ceremony took place shortly before dawn with just a handful of witnesses present. Its stealthy nature was, of course, due to a lack of papal permission.
* On January 29, 1886, Carl Benz applied for a patent for his “vehicle powered by a gas engine.” His first model, known as the “Benz Patent Motorwagen,” was financed by his wife and business partner Bertha’s dowry, had three wheels, and ran on an internal combustion engine similar to modern automobiles.
* On January 23, 1922, a second injection of insulin brought Leonard Thompson, a 14-year-old diabetic, out of his coma at the Toronto General Hospital. An initial dose caused a severe allergic reaction, but after biochemist James Collip worked nearly two weeks to improve and purify the extract, he was rewarded with success and Thompson survived.
* On January 24, 1935, the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company of Richmond, Virginia, sold the first canned beer, Krueger Cream Ale, to the public. When approached by the American Can Company, Krueger executives were unenthused, but American Can’s offer to install the necessary equipment for free helped seal the deal, to a nearly 100% customer approval rating.
* On January 28, 1978, TV viewers were treated to their first sight of the mysterious Mr. Roarke and his sidekick, Tattoo, on a tropical beach with the debut episode of “Fantasy Island.” While there were hints that Roarke was immortal or at least centuries old, the real entertainment was in

“Pieces From The Past” - Featuring The Lititz Historical Foundation
“Pieces From The Past” continues this week, featuring the Lititz Historical Foundation. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies.
Students from Reamstown Elementary participated in their Annual Science Fair recently. Students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade showed off their fabulous collections that ranged from pencils and Webkinz, to rocks/minerals, seashells, and Star Wars
action figures.
Students in third through fifth grade could also show off their talents by choosing something of interest to them, and then following the Scientific Method, as real-life scientists do,
by choosing a problem, and ending with stating a conclusion.
Shown in the photo is a teacher (far right) waving a black light over flowers to show what one student experimented with.

Military History Club Meeting
The Military History Club of Lancaster County will host Louis Cinfici at their next meeting on Tuesday, January 31.
Lou Cinfici was born in Reading into a very big family. His military career started when he was only 16 years old. Lou was one of almost a quarter million, 243,000, that served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Lou comes from a big military family. His brother Joe was at Pearl Harbor, and four of his other brothers also being in, he wanted to go in. Lou wanted to go in, but of course, there was no way his parents would sign the papers. So, he forged his parents’ signatures.
In the Atlantic theater, Lou witnessed American ships being sunk by German U boats left and right. His job was to salvage what he could from the destroyed boats and save as many lives as possible. His ship went into
