February 2, 9, 16, Martin Celebrates 80th Birthday Fridays, 23. Leroy Martin celebrated his 80th birthday on Thursday, January 11, with the residents of Lincoln Christian Home by taking a walk through the dining hall in his Uncle Sam stilt suit. Leroy’s self-employment in the drywall business for over 50 years gave him plenty of experience walking on stilts. Over the years, he entertained children and adults with peanut candy scrambles at birthday parties and family get-togethers. Leroy and his wife, Rachel, are residents at Lincoln Christian Home in an independent-living apartment in Ephrata. Family and friends also helped him celebrate at a birthday party given by his daughter, Lynette, and her husband, Dwight.

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

“It’s not of works” Author: Wenger Scripture: John 1:12,13 - “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

In the previous two weeks, we noted that salvation has nothing to do with your family, “not by blood.” Nor is salvation earned by good works of any kind, “Not by the will of the flesh.” This week we consider that no amount of religious rites, rules or participation can save anyone. So it’s “Not by the will of man.” The NIV translation renders this verse, “Nor of a husband’s will.” That is unfortunate. The word Aner’r is translated as husband when the context calls for it. It would be better seen as man vs. woman, it’s a male human. I believe it is best thought of as mankind in a general sense. John doesn’t seem to be considering a

narrow view, but the wide view. There are many ways mankind would trust in something other than the work of Christ on the cross for salvation. Catechism, as doctrinally sound as they often are, acing you’re Catechism test doesn’t save. I went through Catechism, but I wasn’t saved. Many people believe that Philanthropy will purchase salvation. You cannot earn salvation by being a big donor. Money may buy influence, but it can’t purchase salvation. Church membership is the greatest of all misconceptions. You don’t become anything by entering a building. You don’t become a car because you walk into a garage.

As important and good as church is, membership rolls are filled with the unsaved. Baptism is an important ordinance of the church, but it does not save anyone. Good works of all kinds are offered up to God by “the will of man.” Do you know of anyone who would actually tithe 10% of a spice like the Pharisees did? The Pharisees added some 400 man-made laws to all of the Biblical laws of the Old Testament. The Bible is clear, Ephesians 2:8-10 says, “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Galatians 2:16 states; “Nevertheless

knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.” I was speaking to a man who was 92 years of age and I said you are knocking on the door of eternity and that door is going to open soon, you better know what is on the other side. How do you know where you’re going to spend eternity? Sure enough, he followed the same exact pattern most professing unbelievers do. He first said, my mom was a very good Christian. I had

to tell him, yes, that is good, but it’s not your family that counts for salvation. No one goes to heaven because of family (it’s not by blood). Then, he went to the next false hope when he said, “I was picked out of all the kids in the church group to go to some special camp.” I had to say, it’s not by having good works or being a good person (Not by the will of the flesh). Lastly, he said, “I was baptized.” Once again, I had to tell him, it’s not by church membership or baptism (Not by the will of man). So, as we can see, salvation is not based on your good Christian family, or by being good, moral, fair, kind, nor by church membership,

baptism, Catechism, singing in the choir, keeping the laws of God, it is “But by God” as our verse declares. Real salvation is centered in the person and work of Christ on the cross and nothing else. You must first acknowledge that you sin. God says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The Bible states, “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). When Christ died, He died for your sin. He died in your place. You must understand that Christ’s death on the cross is sufficient to save. By faith, we ask Christ forgive our sin and submit our life to His control. As a young teenager I got very involved with drugs and everything that went with it. I wasn’t really happy. Several times I tried to stop the drugs, but to my dismay, I couldn’t quit. We would do drugs during the week and even Saturday night, then go to church on Sunday. I had heard enough from the Pastor and radio programs about Christ to make a decision. I remember it like it was yesterday, there was no altar call. I just knew in my heart that my life was out of control and that I couldn’t fix this broken life. I didn’t know what all salvation meant, I just knew I needed salvation. I prayed, “Lord save me, make me the person you want me to be.” After that it took going to a church that taught the word of God and that is when I began to grow. Christ is the answer to every question. He died on the cross to save anyone who will trust Him. Do it today.

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Amvets Post No. 136 Home Association is a military or veterans organization in Ephrata, PA whose mission is: to promote and strengthen friendship and fellowship among American veterans. Partnering with Blue Ridge on their 14th Annual Keystone Military Families’ (KMF) Stockings for Sol diers initiative, the Ephrata Amvets Board of Trustees recently approved a $500 monetary donation to the project. Every dollar raised for KMF’s Stockings For Soldiers helps fund the packing of holiday stockings filled with food, hygiene products, holiday decor ations, Christmas cards, and other requested items and shipping them to a deserving soldier. In addition, this year the Post was also a collection site for these much needed items. Cindy Mellinger, Central PA Coordinator for KMF’s

Stockings for Soldiers, and Marketing & Community Relations Coordinator for Blue Ridge stated, “We are extremely grateful to the Amvets Post No. 136 for

their support and com passion. Sending packages to our men and women serving overseas would not be possible without their generosity.”
