Lititz Senior Center Lists Activities

The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz, is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with lunch served at noon. There is no cost to attend.

The Center serves independent Lancaster County seniors ages 60 and up from Ephrata, Rothsville, Akron, Neffsville and Lititz areas. Ephrata is also served by van service. Reservations for lunch and transportation must be made by 10:00 a.m., one day in advance, by calling the Center at 717626-2800.

Shirley S. Good

Shirley S. Good, 88, of Stevens, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at United Zion Retirement Community.

She was born in Brunnerville to the late Elmer and Ellen (Steely) Spangler and was the wife of the late Isaac B. Good, who passed away in 2003.

She attended Grace Point Church of the Nazarene. Shirley was a homemaker. She was a Tupperware lady for 35 years. She enjoyed reading scripture, bird watching, baking, spending time with her grandchildren, and tending to her flower beds. Shirley always encouraged people with her energetic and outgoing personality.

Ephrata, passed away on Thursday, February 15.

Shirley is survived by four children: Deborah Keebler, wife of the late Glenn; Tina, wife of Barry Strepko; Ronald, husband of Judy Good; and David, husband of Deana Good; six grandchildren: Daniel, husband of April Strepko;

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Carl Good; a brother, Ronald Spangler and a son-in-law, Glenn Keebler.

A viewing was held on Monday, February 26, at Middle Creek Church, 351 Middle Creek Church Road, Lititz, followed by her funeral service at 11 AM, with pastor John Hess officiating. Interment will take place in the Brickerville Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Cocalico Middle School Presents “Sherlock Holmes”

The Cocalico Middle School is proud to announce the performances of this year’s play production, “Sherlock Holmes: The Baker Street Irregulars.” The show will take place on

Thursday, February 29, Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2 in the Cocalico Middle School Auditorium. All performances begin at 7:00 p.m. Sherlock Holmes is missing, and the streets of London are awash with crime. Who will save the day? The Baker Street Irregulars–a gang of street kids hired by Sherlock himself to help solve cases. Now they must band together to prove not only that Sherlock is not dead but also to find the mayor’s missing daughter, untangle a murder mystery from their own past, and face the masked criminal mastermind behind it all–a bandit who just may be the brilliant evil Moriarty, the man who killed Sherlock himself! Can a group of orphans, pickpockets, inventors and artists rescue the people of London? The game is afoot!

Featuring a cast of 30

student actors and 11 student technical crew members, “Sherlock Holmes: The Baker Street Irregulars” is a larger-scale play production for middle school students.

The roles of the “Baker Street Irregulars” are performed by Bristol Shoemaker (Wiggins), Lillian Arment (Pockets), Nick Mitton (Tiny), Malorie Pennabaker (Ash), and Emmanuel Salcedo Vargas (Chen). Also featured are the talents of Sophia Weaver

(Eliza Mayhew), Julia Hershey (Inspector Lestrade), Levi Meck (Dr. Watson), and Trevor Michaels as the famous detective himself, Sherlock Holmes. The show is being directed by Daniel Behler with assistance by producer and technical director Scott Hummel. Other staff members include Timothy Butz, Tricia Fasnacht, Tess Kennedy and Michele Swoope.

There is a cost for tickets, and tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the middle school office at 717336-1471. Tickets will also be available for purchase the night of each performance.

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon paprika

Let the cheese stand until it is softened. Combine with lemon juice, garlic and red pepper. Beat until light and fluffy, then stir in the nuts. Shape into a roll 1½” across. Sprinkle with a mixture of the chili powder and paprika. Chill.

Let stand at room temperature about 10 minutes before serving with crackers

Easy Party Chicken

8 oz. package stuffing mix

4 whole chicken breasts, cooked, cut into pieces

1 can cream of chicken soup

1 can cream of celery soup

8 oz. package cream cheese, softened

Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare stuffing mix as directed on package. Allow to cool slightly. Place chicken in bottom of a 9”x13” baking dish. Mix soups and cream cheese. Put over chicken layer. Top with prepared stuffing. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 30 minutes.

Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball

8 oz. package cream cheese, softened ½ cup butter (no substitutes), softened

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

¾ cup confectioners sugar

2 tablespoons brown sugar

¾ cup semisweet mini chocolate chips

¾ cup finely chopped walnuts or pecans

graham crackers, vanilla wafers, mini pretzels for serving

In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, butter and vanilla until fluffy. Gradually add sugars and stir in chocolate chips. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. Place the refrigerated mixture on a large sheet of

plastic wrap and shape into a ball. Refrigerate for another hour.

Just before serving, roll the ball into chopped nuts. Great for dipping graham crackers, vanilla wafers, mini pretzels, etc.

Cheese Ball

16 oz. cream cheese

4 oz. shredded cheddar cheese

1 tablespoon chopped onions

1 tablespoon parsley

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Mix all ingredients together with a fork. Form a ball, and roll in chopped nuts. Serve with any kind of cracker.

Banana Cream Cheesecake

Pat Roth, Ephrata

Crust:

1¾ cups graham cracker crumbs

¼ cup sugar

½ cup butter, melted

Filling:

8 oz. package cream cheese, softened

½ cup sugar

8 oz. carton frozen whipped topping, thawed and divided

3 to 4 medium firm bananas, sliced 1¾ cups cold milk

3.4 oz. package instant banana cream pudding mix

In a small bowl, combine cracker crumbs and sugar. Stir in the butter. Set aside 1/2 cup for the topping. Press the remaining crumb

mixture onto the bottom and up the sides of a greased 9” springform pan or a 9” square baking pan.

Bake at 350°F for 5 to 7 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Fold in 2 cups of the whipped topping.

Arrange half of the banana slices in the crust. Top with half of the cream cheese mixture. Repeat layers.

In a small bowl, whisk the milk and pudding mix for 2 minutes. Let stand for 2 minutes until soft set. Fold in the rest of the whipped topping. Pour over the cream cheese layer. Sprinkle with crumb mixture.

Refrigerate 1 to 2 hours, until set.

Pineapple Cream Cheese Sandwiches

8 oz. package cream

6 tablespoons mayonnaise

15 oz. can crushed pineapple, drained ½ to 1 cup chopped pecans thin sliced wheat and white bread Mix all ingredients thoroughly.

Alternating white and wheat slices, make 3-layer sandwiches. Trim crusts and cut into 2, 3 or 4 sandwiches, depending on size desired.

Ham Rolls

Dulce Fletcher, Ephrata

“Here’s the recipe my mother-in-law from Ohio served at any special gathering of family and friends. Two batches are better than one!”

1 jar kosher dill pickle spears

1 lb. deli or prepackaged rectangular ham, medium sliced

1 block cream cheese

Bring block of cream cheese to room temperature.

Drain pickles and lay out on paper towel or clean to and blot excess juice.

Lay out a rectangle of ham and spread thinly edge to edge with cream cheese. Lay a pickle on the short edge and roll up firmly. Use 6 to 8 toothpicks spaced along the length of the roll to hold in place.

Chill rolls in refrigerator for an hour or more.

Slice between toothpicks with a sharp knife, leaving picks in for easy serving.

Cheese Dip

3 egg yolks

3 teaspoons sugar

3 teaspoons vinegar

3 teaspoons milk (3) 8 oz. packages cream cheese

8 oz. Cheez Whiz parsley flakes, optional onion powder, optional

Combine egg yolks, sugar, vinegar and milk. Cook until thick. Add cream cheese, Cheez Whiz and seasonings.

Mashed Potatoes

9 oz. bag baby spinach, chopped, OR 10 oz. package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained

8 oz. package cream cheese, cut in chunks

2½ cups milk

1 cup diced onion

3 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon minced garlic

2 cups instant mashed potato flakes

¼ cup grated ParmesanRomano cheese blend

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

1 cup diced ham (optional)

1 cup shredded Swiss cheese

Heat oven to 450°F.

Combine spinach, cream cheese, milk, onion, butter and garlic in a large microwave-safe bowl. Cover and heat on high power, stirring once, until milk is hot, about 6 minutes. Stir to melt cream cheese.

Add potatoes, ParmesanRomano cheese, salt and pepper to hot milk mixture. Stir. Pour into an 8”x8” or 9”x9” baking dish. Sprinkle ham and cheese over top.

Bake until golden brown, about 30 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Mushroom Tidbits

3 oz. package cream cheese, softened

4 oz. jar mushroom stems and pieces

2 tablespoons pimiento

½ tablespoon Dijon mustard

8 oz. can refrigerated crescent rolls 1 egg, beaten poppy or sesame seeds

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Chop mushrooms and pimiento (can use a mini food processor).

Thoroughly blend cream cheese, Dijon mustard, mushrooms and pimiento.

Separate crescent rolls into four rectangles. Firmly press perforations to seal. Spread each rectangle with 1/4 of the mushroom mixture. Starting with the long side, roll up jellyroll style. Cut each roll into six pieces.

Place seam side down on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with seeds.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden.

Veggi Dip

Hope Weaver, Ephrata

2 eggs, beaten

2 tablespoons vinegar

2 tablespoons sugar

8 oz. package cream cheese

1 heaping tablespoon sour cream & onion powder

1.5 oz. package onion soup and dip mix

Mix eggs, vinegar and sugar well. Put in a double boiler and stir till thick.

Remove from stove and add cream cheese and seasonings.

Best when refrigerated for several hours.

Note: Seasonings can be adjusted to taste. Soup mix can be reduced or omitted if the taste is too strong.

Chocoholics Chocolate Cheesecake

Crumb Crust:

8½ oz. package chocolate wafers

1/3 cup butter, melted 2 tablespoons sugar

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Crush wafers in a blender till fine crumbs. Combine crumbs, melted butter, sugar and nutmeg. Press into a springform pan on bottom and sides to 1/2” from the top. Refrigerate.

Cheese Filling:

3 eggs

1 cup sugar

8 oz. package cream cheese, softened 12 oz. package semisweet chocolate chips, melted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup sour cream

Beat eggs with sugar on high speed till light. Beat in cream cheese till smooth. Add melted chocolate, vanilla, salt and sour cream. Beat till smooth. Pour mixture into crumb crust.

Bake 1 hour, or until cheesecake is just firm when pan is shaken. Don’t overbake. Cool on wire rack then refrigerate, covered, overnight. Serve with whipped cream decorations.

Tips To Avoid The Buildup

Clutter has a way of taking over a home. As time goes by, items that are not stored or discarded when they’ve lost their utility can gradually take over a space, creating a claustrophobic, cluttered feeling that can affect how people feel in their homes.

Clutter is not something to be taken lightly. A 2010 study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that women who characterized their living spaces as cluttered or marked by unfinished projects were more likely to experience fatigue and depression than women who described their homes as restful and restorative. Though clutter is often discussed in terms of removing it, there’s also many ways to prevent it in the first place.

• Schedule weekly cleaning sessions. Cleaning is a chore few look forward to, and that reluctance may be a byproduct of infrequent cleanings. The less a home is cleaned, the longer cleaning sessions take when individuals get around to it. Weekly cleaning sessions can help prevent items from stockpiling and creating a cluttered look.

• Discard items when they’re no longer used. Holding on to items you no longer use will eventually contribute to the buildup of clutter. That’s a lesson parents know well, as kids outgrow toys, which can then pile up and contribute to overcrowded toy chests and play rooms. Adults also have a hard time discarding their own toys, including old devices. As kids outgrow toys, let them choose which ones to discard before

they’re replaced with new items. The same goes for adults, who can wipe old devices like tablets, smartphones and laptops clean and discard them once they’ve purchased replacements.

• Donate clothing. Much like kids’ toys and adults devices should be discarded when they’re no longer used, old clothes can be donated to create more storage space and prevent the buildup of clutter. Clutter is often described as something

visible to the naked eye, but clutter can also build up in dresser drawers and behind closet doors. Periodically go through closets and dressers and remove items you no longer wear, donating them if they’re still in good shape and discarding them if they’re not.

• Make it easy to find stored items. Even the most well-organized person can fall victim to clutter if stored items prove difficult to find. When revamping storage systems, choose clear,

stackable drawers so you won’t make a mess as you look for stored items you can’t find. Clear, stackable plastic bins and drawers make it easier to find what you’re looking for, reducing the likelihood that items will end up on the floor or strewn about. If you don’t want to replace existing storage bins, label them if they’re not clear to make it easier to identify what’s inside.

Clutter can quickly take over a home. A proactive approach that emphasizes clutter prevention can make for a more relaxing and restful home.

One That Had Authority

“And they were astonished at His doctrine, for He taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.” —Mark 1:22

At our Lord’s first ministry in Galilee, His teaching immediately drew attention because it was so different from that of the scribes. There were two reasons for this.

First, the scribes were the Bible teachers of the day. They expounded the Law, the Psalms, and the Prophets—but like us, could expound only what was written It was not so with our Lord. Here was One greater, infinitely greater, than

Moses or any of the Old Testament writers. Here was the long-promised Prophet of whom Moses was but a type (Deut. 18:15). Thus He could say: “It hath been said… But I say unto you…” and “Verily, verily, I say unto you.” His hearers were asked to believe because He had spoken, and somehow they felt His authority and were astonished.

But there is another reason why His teaching is said here to have been “with authority, and not as the scribes.”

The scribes, if true men of God, would have pointed to the Scriptures, saying confidently: “Thus saith the Lord.” But they were not free men. They belonged to a religious system, which expected them to teach only “the traditions of the elders.” They did not dare to proclaim what to them appeared to be the correct interpretation of any passage of Scripture. They could only say: “The fathers, our rabbis,” etc., “say that this passage means so and so.” But this bondage was not forced upon them.

It was born of pride of position and wealth, and an ambition to rise even higher in the graces of the Establishment. There was no good excuse why they should not have blessed the children of Israel with a ministry, which rang with a clear, firm “Thus saith the Lord.”

Little wonder our Lord condemned them with His series of bitter “woes” and called them a “generation of vipers” (Matt. 23:13-33). Their “fear of man” and their love of “the praise of men” was an insult to God,

whose ministers they were. As a result, these men who would “devour widows’ houses” would also “for a pretense make long prayers” (Ver. 14). Where morals were concerned, they would “strain at a gnat” but “swallow a camel” (Ver. 24). Like zealous ritualists, they would carefully “clean the outside of the cup and of the platter,” but within they themselves were “full of extortion and excess” (Ver. 25). Our Lord likened them to “whited sepulchres,” which within were “full of

dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness” (Ver. 27).

Our Lord called these religious leaders, sincerely revered by so many, “fools and blind…blind guides” (Vers. 17, 24). Yet in their blindness they were very zealous for the Establishment. In their opposition to the truth, they “shut up the kingdom of heaven against men,” not entering in themselves and hindering those who were interested from entering in (Ver. 13). And in their zeal for their own religious system they “compassed sea and land to make one proselyte” (Ver. 15).

Naturally, this robbed them of any spiritual power they might have possessed. Naturally, the people were “astonished” when, by contrast, they heard Christ teach “with authority.”

Surely all of us who teach the Word today should ask ourselves: “Do I teach with authority, the authority of the Word, rightly divided, or do I teach as the scribes? Do I teach in the liberty and power of the Holy Spirit or

am I bound by the creed of my denomination?”

Men called of God to be teachers of the truth can, alas, become “blind guides,” involved in the gravest of sins because they exalt man above God. May we rather remain keenly aware of Satan’s devices to neutralize and destroy our ministry, and say with Paul:

“But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts” (I Thes. 2:4).

“…nor handling the Word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God” (II Cor. 4:2).

If we, like Paul, can say this sincerely, we too will “speak with authority, and not as the scribes,” not, indeed, with inherent authority as did our Lord, but surely with delegated authority, as the representatives of God, the ambassadors of Christ.

The Brownstown Elementary Student of the Month was announced recently. The long-time sponsor of this program is the West Earl Lions Club, and along with teacher, Mrs. Kris Brubaker, they are proud to name second grader Brynlee Reed, daughter of John and Christine Reed, as the Student of the Month. Mrs. Brubaker says that Brynlee comes to school with a cheerful attitude ready to learn and be a great friend to others. Throughout the day, they can depend on her to be in the right place at the right time. Brynlee shows the schools values,

respect, responsibility and safety at all times and she tries her best on every assignment, and is willing to

help others with theirs.

Brynlee volunteers and is up to any task while making a fantastic partner for activities. She shares good ideas while listening to others, willing to compromise for the good outcome.

Denver Lions Club Student Of The Month

The Denver Lions Club has recognized Katelin Mattos, of Stevens, as Student of the Month for January 2024. Katelin is the daughter of Amy Zeller and Mike Mattos.

Beyond her studies at Cocalico High School, Katelin is active on the Girls Varsity Soccer Team, serving as Captain. She also serves as Junior Captain for Varsity Track and Field. Katelin is a member of the National Honor Society and has earned an Eagle Excellence Award.

Outside of school Katelin has volunteered her time to help others. She has handed out holiday meals on Ephrata’s Main Street, helped at elementary school’s Field Day, and read cultural books to students

at Reamstown Elementary School.

Katelin’s future academic plans are attending Statler College of Engineering, to pursue a degree in

Engineering.

The Woman’s Club of Ephrata convened on Thursday, February 15 at the Eicher Arts Center for its monthly gathering, embracing the spirit of community and conservation. Amidst the decor of Valentine hearts, our members engaged in a meaningful dialogue on wildlife conservation, followed by updates on the club’s ongoing efforts and activities.

Their special guest, from the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, shared insightful details about the sanctuary’s noble mission to provide a haven for elephants retired from circuses. Through the presentation, they learned about the sanctuary’s dedication to ensuring these majestic creatures enjoy their best lives in a peaceful, undisturbed habitat, cared for with love and respect.

Following the inspirational talk, the meeting proceeded with officer reports and club business. They revisited their commitment to caring for absent and sick members, a practice that continues to

Despite the cancellation of the January meeting due to inclement weather, the club has seen positive developments, especially in their fundraising efforts. The lottery and car wash ticket sales have been fruitful, contributing to their mission of supporting local causes.

The Woman’s Club’s social calendar is bustling with excitement for the

upcoming months. Members eagerly anticipate a delightful lunch out at the Lincoln House in February, an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company in a more casual setting.

As spring approaches, they look forward to their annual April Tea meeting, a tradition that brings them together for an afternoon of tea, treats, and friendship. Don’t forget the May Luncheon, another event that celebrates their collect­

ive efforts and camaraderie over the past year.

In a delightful twist, the meeting space was adorned with Valentine hearts, leading to a fun discovery for members who found hidden hearts and won table chocolates. The meeting culminated in the sharing of homemade cherry pie, adding a sweet note to the gathering.

The club’s initiative to donate stylish sweatpants to the VA, highlights their ongoing commitment to supporting veterans in the community. “Women At War” Special Program

Join the Lititz Historical Foundation at the Lititz Public Library on Saturday, March 16 at 1:30 p.m. for a very special program!

They will welcome York County historian and author Dominish Miller who will present, “Women At War: The Female Soldiers of the American Civil War and Those That Wished They Were.” This is a free program, and open to the public.

Contrary to popular belief, women did in fact fight in the American Civil War. They also infiltrated the United States Army in earlier wars. Deborah Sampson served for 17 months in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War as Robert Shurtliff, and Lucy Brewer served with the Marines aboard Old Ironsides as George Baker during the War of 1812. Once a taboo

topic, modern historians are finally shedding light on the role that female soldiers played in the Civil War and the women who made a living off of lying about their military service.

Dominish Marie Miller is the Third Circuit Court of Appeals Librarian for the

Middle District of Pennsylvania and the founder of Preserving the History of Newberrytown. She has authored three books, “Preserving the History of Newberrytown: A Community Cookbook From the Cooks of Newberrytown,” “Pennsylvania 2021, volumes 1 and 2” and “Then and Now: A Pictorial View Of A Changing Town.” Dominish is also a reenactor with the 87th Regiment, PVI. She portrays a private in the 87th PA Co C.
