Who’s Hiring in Healthcare

Several Cocalico High School teachers made lunch reservations on the last Friday of February, but they didn’t need to leave the building. Instead, they were invited to dine at the World Express Restaurant, a creation of the Life Skills students and their teachers. “I am in charge of marketing,” said 16-yearold Ethan Wickenheiser, “but at some point I may do

different roles if needed.” Shown are diners and restaurant staff including, from left to right, (seated) James Castaneda, Jim Shoemaker, Rich Kohler (English teacher), Eddie Negron, Nancy Lewis (English teacher), Wendy Schmid (Social Studies teacher), Elaine Shoemaker; (standing) Jenna Schillaci (Life Skills teacher and Maste-

mind behind the restaurant idea), Kyle Snyder, Jesse Davey, Jazzy Reinhole and Gage Lawhorne. In preparation, the students applied for various jobs — chef, dishwasher, server, busser, interior decorator, marketing, host, manager, inventory, buyer — and were interviewed by volunteers from the community.

additional time spent at the grocery store increase the likelihood of contact with others, potentially increasing shoppers’ risk of contracting coronavirus as well. There fore, people taking steps to stay at home may have to rethink the way they purchase and use food. Being more mindful of food waste and putting leftovers and ingredients to use in new ways can help stretch food further and reduce the need to make frequent trips to the grocery store. Consider these ideas to make use of leftovers. • Save those vegetables. It’s easy to scrape a half-

portion of uneaten vegetables into the trash thinking it can’t be used. Instead, combine it with other vegetables accumulated throughout the week. Many play well together and can be mixed into casseroles, omelets, soups, and stir-fry recipes. • Create new meals. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers. • Think beyond dinner. Leftovers can be collected at any time of day and used later on. Cold cuts can be chopped and used to make a stromboli with some refrig erated pizza dough. Save Belgian waffles from break fast and top with breaded chicken fingers for a delicious chicken-andwaffles meal for lunch or dinner. Leftover roasted potatoes and scraps of ham can be used in a breakfast hash. • Stuck on starches. Turn extra rice from dinner into arancini (rice balls) for a snack on another day. A leftover sweet potato or two can be mixed with butternut squash to make a sweet and healthy mashed side dish. Mashed potatoes can be transformed into potato croquettes or potato pan cakes. Finding new ways to use leftovers means minimal waste and fewer trips to the supermarket.

February’s theme was Latin. In addition to cultural lessons on Latin culture, students visited Castaneda’s Mexican Restaurant in downtown Denver. The restaurant’s owner ate lunch with the teachers in February and acted as “judge.” The restaurant will open again on the last Friday in March, this time featuring Irish cuisine. April will involve a trip to Chinatown in preparation for Asian food. The World Express Rest aurant builds upon the success students have had making Panini’s for the teachers on Fridays. “The students came up with the idea for the World Express Restaurant, in part, because of the success they experi enced with the Panini Press. Through the Panini Press, they have been able to meet teachers, practice math (purchasing and account balances), learn cooking skills (measurement, food safety, presentation) and improve their communi cation (written and verbal). The students hope the World Express will allow them to meet even more teachers and provide them the business challenges they are looking for,” said Dr. Zuraw.

Hard working, overachieving, and open minded are only a few words to describe senior Loi Nguyen. Ever since he was young and in elementary school he has had a determined mindset to get the job done effectively and efficiently, which has stayed true to this day. Nguyen involves himself in many different school activities. He is a part of the Robotics Club, Chess Club, and Quiz Bowl team and is also the Treasurer for Ephrata’s National Honors Society. He may even be a familiar face to some in the community for you can find him working at the Ephrata Dairy Queen or maybe you have seen him on the basketball court. Nguyen plays for the boys’ basketball team and has been playing since he was in fourth grade. Nguyen is not one to be seen slacking in school and you can always find him looking for some way to boost his grades. He’s not taking his senior year lightly as he hopes to remain in the top five students in the class. After high school, he plans on attending Penn State University to major in pre-medicine. Not surprisingly, he credits his EHS science teachers for instilling a love of science. “I look up to Mrs. Chinchock for sparking my interest in biology and science.” Outside of school he enjoys hanging out with friends, solving puzzles, and working on computer programming. Nguyen holds one busy schedule upon himself, but never lets it get the best of him. “Always plan ahead and never put something off for tomorrow that could be done today,” said Nguyen. We educate before we estimate!

Kara Hoover is an eighth grader who goes to school at Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS), she’s 14 and the church she attends is Millway Mennonite. For high school, Kara will be homeschooled, which she is looking forward to. Her favorite sports teams are any teams that are Philadelphia-based, and golf is her least favorite sport. At school, Kara enjoys talking and hanging out with friends during the day. She likes the personal relationships at LAMS and the sense of community. One of Kara’s favorite memories of LAMS is from a field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo, where they were stuck for two hours after an unfortunate bus mishap, which ultimately ended in a long-lasting memory. The class Kara most looks forward to is Physical Education, and she likes playing volleyball whenever possible. Outside of school, Kara likes hunting and playing or watching sports (with the exception of golf). She also enjoys listening to country music. If Kara could go or live anywhere, it would be someplace in the mountains, because she enjoys nature and being around it. When asked what she would most like to change about the world, Kara brought up poverty, saying that “everyone should have enough food to eat.” Written by: Kayla Risser

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

“He will complete it” Author: Wenger Philippians 1:4 - “Being confident of this very thing; that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Have you ever known someone who starts projects

and doesn’t finish or it goes on for so long it takes years because they just can’t get motivated to finish it? I am glad God doesn’t work that way; He finishes what He starts. God starts a good work in you the same moment you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior. There are many transactions that occur at that moment of salvation. It is sad, but often Christians don’t understand and or fully appreciate these great truths. Space won’t allow enumeration of a complete list, but the major ones are as follows. One other thing…grab your Bible and check out these verses: “we are justified (declared righteous)” (Rom. 3:23-28),

“we become children of God” (1 John 3:1-2), “we are baptized or placed into the body of Christ the church” (1 Corinthians 12:13), “we

are forgiven” (Ephesians 1:7), “we are sealed by the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 4:30), “we are Indwelt by the Holy Spirit” (1

There are many more benefits that occur at salvation. These truths have to do with your position in Christ. In other words, these transactions are once for all…they take place at salvation and are irrevocable; they cannot be changed and do not depend on your everyday living or your condition. All of these benefits are a down payment (if you will) and He, Christ, will make good on payment

in full. He began this work in every believer and He will complete it. The position/condition of the believer is where the confusion lies. As a Christian, you look at your everyday life and say yes but I don’t feel very righteous, I don’t feel saved. Feelings can be misleading. You must trust in facts. The railroad illustrates this well; a train’s engine represents the facts of God’s word; the caboose is our feelings. The engine drives the train; the caboose is just along for the ride. We are not to rely on feelings, but trust facts. Our daily condition doesn’t match our position in Christ. This process of becoming what we already are is called

sanctification. Positional truth takes place at once, instantaneously at the moment of salvation; our growth in Christ takes time and is a daily process. A verse that illustrates this is Galatians 2:20 - “I am crucified with Christ never theless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God.” In a positional sense, Paul was crucified when Christ died on the cross. That’s our position. When Paul says; “the life I now live I live by faith” that is our condition or daily living. Doubt and disillusionment often have their roots in the believer’s ignorance of these great doctrines. It is our responsibility as a believer to study and know these doctrines; how can you walk in truth that you don’t know and understand? So it’s not that our daily life is of no concern, but that our daily life reflects who we already are. Although our daily living may need a lot of Divine attention don’t despair; He that began this work will continue and will complete it. Do we think that the God, who by His word spoke the entire universe into existence, would not be able to bring to completion the work He begins in a believer? Live what we already are. He… Christ will complete what he started.

To Our Valued Customers:

For almost 60 years, Weaver Markets has been committed to providing quality foods and excellent service to our customers. During this challenging and changing time, our commitment to you will not change. While the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and rapidly changing environment surrounding it have produced a lot of fear and anxiety, we want to assure you that Weaver Markets is prioritizing the health and well-being of our customers, associates and our community above all. While we are getting shipments of products Monday – Saturday, many of our suppliers have been unable to supply us properly. Many national product manufacturers simply can’t produce enough product to meet the current demand. We are very pleased to see vast improvements in the availability of products in many of our perishable departments via local suppliers, but national products predominantly in our Grocery, Frozen Foods and parts of our Dairy have been very limited in what we are able to order and receive. We do ask that as these high demand items become available, that you limit the number of these products you purchase to allow other shoppers an opportunity too. Please be assured we are communicating every day with these suppliers and have started utilizing other suppliers wherever possible. We have always prided ourselves on having full shelves and the current situation in those departments is not up to our standards. For this we apologize to you. This week again we will unfortunately not have any advertised specials. There just is not enough certainty in what we will be receiving to publish a circular this week. Please be assured that we will continue to pass along discounted prices to you as we are able to procure them from our suppliers. We have not and will never engage in any sort of price gouging, but cannot in good conscience post sale prices that we do not know we will be able to support.

We would like to thank our associates again for their hard work these past few weeks as the world has been turned upside down. Grocery stores and take out restaurants have been declared essential by the government and this is something which we do not take lightly. Our associates show up every day to do whatever is needed to get our products to you. We’ve always known that we’ve had the best associates in the business and their actions this month have certainly borne that out. By the time you read this, our Reinholds/Blainsport store will have officially closed for the last time Saturday, March 28. While this will be an incredibly sad and emotional time for us and our associates, we are happy to report that all Reinholds/Blainsport employees who requested a transfer will be working at the Adamstown store starting March 30. If you’ve been a faithful shopper at Reinholds/Blainsport, we would like to thank you for your loyal patronage and welcome you to see some familiar faces working at the Adamstown store starting the week of the 30th. While we certainly do not know what the future holds, we are working with our suppliers to put together advertised specials for the week of April 6-11. At this point it is “simply” a matter of locking in guarantees that they will be able to supply enough product to allow us to advertise them. While the details are still being worked on at this time, we are hopeful that we will be able to provide advertised specials that, while truncated, will move us towards normalcy. Finally, we would like to thank you for being a loyal customer for the last 57+ years and especially through these past few weeks. We are certain that by working together we will come out of this stronger on the other side. Wishing health and safety for you and yours.

We’re all in this together. Fight

COVID-19

Do your part to ensure the safety of our friends, neighbors, your loved ones and yourself as we respond together to COVID-19.

HELP SLOW THE SPREAD. Limiting contact with others now ensures we have resources when we need them. Slowing the spread saves hospital beds, staffing and medical supplies for the most critical patients. Keep 6 feet of space between yourself and others and avoid gatherings to limit exposure. Remember, you may be infected with the virus even if you feel well.

PRACTICE THE 3 C’S. Good personal hygiene is one of the best ways to stay healthy. It’s as simple as following the 3 C’s. CLEAN your hands frequently, washing for 20 seconds with soap and warm water. COVER your cough using your elbow or a tissue. Remember to throw tissues away immediately. CONTAIN the virus by staying home if you feel sick. Testing facilities REQUIRE a doctor’s order. Use the WellSpan online assessment tool or call your doctor to determine whether you need to be tested.

KNOW WHEN TO SEEK CARE. If you have mild symptoms or believe you’ve been exposed, stay home. If you feel worse or have a fever with cough or shortness of breath, call your primary care provider or take the WellSpan online assessment tool at WellSpan.org/coronavirus. If you don’t have a primary care provider, you can call WellSpan’s Coronavirus Information Hotline at (855) 851-3641 free of charge.
