We Would Like To Give Thanks To Our Staff...

to Brighten the Days of Those They Care For!

During these trying times, management here at

Zerbe Retirement Community

would like to take the opportunity to thank our loyal and dedicated staff, who we consider as family, for their service above and beyond the norm.

We are grateful for our staff making the safety and wellbeing of our residents their number one priority!

At the Groves, our residents are our family. We are community-focused and an integral part of life on Main Street in Ephrata. We offer our residents independence, while also providing their loved ones with peace of mind. During these trying times, our commitment, focus, and mission remains the same. We have been practicing social distancing and taking every precaution

to ensure the continued health and safety of our residents. We are also committed to offering unique opportunities for our residents to still connect with others. Residents have been sitting on our enclosed porch, visiting with family members through the glass or connecting online, reading cards of support from neighbors, and working on projects and crafts. Thank you to everyone that has supported the Groves, especially our residents and staff, at this difficult time.

shopping and activities to keep them connected and engaged. During the COVID-19 Stay-at-Home Order, Senior Helpers caregivers have been especially essential in keeping our seniors engaged and connected. Our caregivers use FaceTime and Zoom to connect with family and friends. To stay engaged we have activities that include crafts, painting, puzzles, games, listening to music, reading, baking, cooking, taking walks and meaningful conversation.

The Board of Directors and CEO of Sunny Crest Home would like to express andthey for our theirgratitude groceries, appreciation to the entire Sunny Crest Team for take them for walks, they their Dedication to provide care and safety to those meals we serve as well asmake to each other.for them, they remind their clients AtThis Central PennofNursing standard caring is amplified during these to take their medication Care, times Inc., and our we“Home trying are thankful for the work you do. and they provide comCare Heroes” continue to 2587 Valley View Road, Morgantown, PA 19543 • 610-286-5000 spend time with their panionship during these clients. At Tel Hai Retirement Community, we’re working very hard to ensure that residents and team members live and work in an environment where we’re taking every available precaution to reduce the risk for the spread of illness during this COVID-19 pandemic. The safety, security and well-being of all individuals within our community is our top priority.

Engaging in life and remaining connected to community takes creativity with social distancing restrictions. Our resourceful teams, on both Lititz campuses, support residents’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs in meaningful ways. Video chatting keeps residents in touch with family and friends. ZOOM video supports in-room Chair Yoga, Meditation and other classes to increase a sense of well-being. Virtual meetings safely welcome new residents, and support Resident Council meetings so individuals can exercise their voices. “Group” activities include virtual bingo and trivia. One-on-one staff time with residents includes crafts, and special room-delivered treats and lunches. And our inhouse TV channel airs spiritual services and resident-requested movies.

Senior Helpers provides in-home senior care. Our services range from specialized care for those with chronic diseases looking for assistance with daily activities to companion services to assist with transportation,

Friendship Community is a faithbased organization cultivating capabilities of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties since 1972. With three-day programs, a home-based services program, Lifesharing and 27 residential homes serving over 200 individuals in the two counties, Friendship Community continues its vital work every day to Impact the World with Capabilities. The Individuals served in these programs have enjoyed active games like bowling and outdoor scavenger hunts, creative outlets including Easter Egg painting and puzzles and LOTS of culinary creations including pizzas, cookies and cupcakes. New routines and social distancing have been hard, but Team Members have been lining up video-conferencing with Individuals’ family and friends. Technology has also enabled connections with familiar Friendship Community faces, including daily prayer time with the Spiritual Nurture leader.

Our Wellness & Social Services team members are providing alternative enrichment opportunities to keep residents engaged using social distancing activities, technology and on-campus closed circuit television. We’ve developed additional custom programming called the ‘Tel Hai TV Guide’ where residents are enjoying familiar faces and dynamic programming from their homes including physical and land-based wellness classes, life enrichment lectures, spiritual messages and musical selections by their talented neighbors. It’s just another example of the ‘Hill of Life’ in action!

Here at Zerbe Sister’s Nursing Center, we have been keeping spirits high by playing hallway bingo, distributing pictures and letters sent from the community and trying to make everyone smile as much as possible! We are also trying to set

up Skype dates and a visitation window for our residents to talk with family members face to face! In Independent Living, we’ve done a car parade for a couple celebrating their 70th Anniversary. We sent out packets of “Brain Teaser” games. We have many walkers on our campus and we’ve provided them different types of scavenger hunts they can do while walking. We also started a “Drive by Bingo” game!

Luthercare would like to express its sincere gratitude to our residents, families and friends, as well as to our dedicated team members, during this unprecedented time. Our residents have been wonderfully patient, cooperative and understanding as we have had to

implement many changes to their normal routine, including restricting visitors and offering meals by delivery or takeout only. Our team members are assisting residents in finding alternate ways to connect with their loved ones – through phone calls, texts, video chat, social media and other virtual means. We ask everyone to continue to practice social distancing and proper hygiene, and to stay home. We will get through this together!

In this challenging season where we are encouraged to keep safe physical distancing and shelter in place, we have to find more creative ways to meet the social, emotional and spiritual needs of our residents.

We arranged for an outdoor hymn sing where Messiah College student Mackenzie Brubaker performed five mini outdoor concerts that residents could watch and listen to from their patios or balconies. Team members are assisting residents with staying connected to their loved ones through video chats or penning letters. As the weather warms up, our residents appreciate walks outside where they can enjoy the scenic views of the Conestoga Valley.

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese As we approach Easter Sunday this week, we look forward to celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Easter symbolizes hope, renewal and new life, so as we recognize this very special occasion, let us take time to also pray for those who have been affected by the virus outbreak and for everyone around the world. Shown in the photo is the beautiful Bangor church in Churchtown framed by a pink dogwood. Scenes like this are slowly emerging day by day and providing a reason to smile amidst the challenges we are facing.

Denver Park To Benefit From Gordon Russell’s Eagle Scout Project Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese The Denver Park will soon be home to a brand new nine-hole Frisbee golf course thanks to local scout Gordon Russell from Troop 115 in Schoeneck. Gordon is undertaking this endeavor as his Eagle Scout Project and it will be a great asset to folks in the Denver and surrounding areas. Gordon, who plays Frisbee golf himself, understands the sport is very popular and by building this course, he is helping to provide new outdoor activities for local residents. Gordon approached the Denver Park Association, the Rec Association and Denver Borough, and everyone thought this project would be a great asset to the community. Gordon has also built a wooden case that will be located at the first hole which will hold Frisbees for those new to the sport and they can be borrowed and returned to the case after

play is complete so the next player can enjoy the game. This idea of shared Frisbees is unique as far as Gordon knows and it is a great idea.

Gordon hopes to complete his Eagle Scout Project by the end of April and he is looking for businesses or individuals to sponsor each

hole or sponsor a hole jointly. Gordon is available to discuss sponsorship details by calling him at 717-940-5433.

WellSpan Health is harnessing technology to offer telephone and video visits to medical and behavioral health patients during the COVID-19 outbreak. Remote care protects patients, clinicians and staff by observing the social distancing that health officials are urging to lessen the spread of COVID-19. “We are committed to the health of our patients,” said Kyle Letner, director of Connected Health for WellSpan. “In this time where our traditional way of seeing patients in an office setting may not be feasible or safe, we are finding the opportunity to see patients with whatever means we can, using technology.” After federal and state health officials began re commending social dis tancing, WellSpan physician practices began reaching out to patients to see if they could and wanted to have a telephone visit or a video visit, using the camera on a smartphone, laptop or tablet. WellSpan Health’s primary and specialty care practices are all now offering the option of these visits to appropriate patients. Before this work began,

less than one percent of patient visits were done remotely. That number rose to 40 percent in just one week. Who can have a remote visit? “Telephone or video visits are suitable for patients with acute, common illness, such as a cough, urinary tract infections, sinus infections, diarrhea, a rash, flu-like symptoms and other issues,” said Brian Pollak, M.D., medical director of Connected Health. “In fact,” Pollak said, “patients with COVID-19 symptoms would be well-suited for a remote visit, if their symp toms are not severe.” Telephone or video visits also are appropriate for patients seeking preventive care or for patients seeking routine follow-up for ongoing health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid issues and other chronic problems, in conjunction with the necessary lab work or pharmacy visits. Video visits are the preferred option for remote care, because seeing patients allows clinicians to best assess their condition. Clinicians still will need to physically see patients who need a hands-on exam ination, to listen to their lungs, look into their ears or examine unusual lumps, for example. Also, remote visits are not well-suited for patients with more complex

The efforts of these practices, plus the creation of new, reimagined services like Online Primary Care, Connected Care at Home and Online Urgent Care, made the rapid, recent expansion of online and remote services possible. “It has shown us what works,” Pollak said. “It’s a testament to those practices that tried it out first.” In addition, for urgent needs, patients continue to have access to WellSpan Online Urgent Care, via computer, smartphone or table, at WellSpan.org/OUC Behavioral health remote visits WellSpan Philhaven also is offering video visits to its patients for therapy visits or

Joyous Easter By: Miriam H. Martin

Easter will soon be here. Spring is a joyful time of year. The tulips seem to say, “Have a good day.” When the birds do sing, Much joy to us they bring. The rain makes everything grow. All this God does show. The sky may be blue, or it may be gray. My wish for you is a warm sunny day. For others we should pray. They will be blessed always. Be thankful for today. Therapists also are holding video group meetings for some of their most vulnerable patients, such as those with borderline personality disorder and other mental health issues who are receiving a type of therapy called dialectical behavior therapy. “Group therapy is an important component of DBT so Philhaven worked quickly to make it available to patients via video,” Woods said. WellSpan Philhaven also plans to use video visits to deliver group therapy to other patients, as well as to deliver the other services it offers in offices, the community and homes. Clinicians are still seeing patients in person, in rooms where they can maintain social distancing, if they feel that some patients still require that type of service. Berks History Center Museum & Research Library - A Tale From The Past The Berks History Center Museum & Research Library are currently closed and will remain closed through the end of April to ensure the health and safety of the community. During this time, the Berks History Center staff is working remotely to continue to share stories like this, through their digital platforms and publications like The Shopping News of Lancaster County. Mountain Mary: The Medicine Woman of the Oley Valley Nearly 200 years ago, spring would have been Mountain Mary’s favorite time of year as she worked around her farm in the Oley Valley in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The Oley Valley reminded her of the Rhine Valley, where she and her family emigrated from around the time of the American Revolution. Her farm, about 42 acres of rolling hills, consisted of a log home, an outdoor bake oven, a milk house, a lean-to for her cows, several large meadows and a small

cemetery plot where her mother and two sisters were buried. She was very proud of her milk house, which was cooled by a stream of mountain water, channeled into the building through hand-hewn logs. The stream began as a spring high on the hill and flowed through the building continuing downstream to irrigate a meadow. Mountain Mary supported herself by making butter from her cow’s milk and by keeping bees for honey. She would then give the butter and honey to a neighbor, who would take it to market to sell in Philadelphia. She would often send along some food for the poor. Mary was very religious and would read her German Bible; Piety, faith and charity were central to her life. In addition, Mountain Mary used many of the native herbs and plants, which grew on the hillside, for healing and poultices. She would collect and dry the herbs over the years and she used them to make lotions and salves. Her neighbors would come regularly to her

cabin for help or medical advice. She often prayed with them and shared her knowledge, teas and medicines. She used herbs like peppermint and spearmint to make tea; bergamot would come a little later in the spring. Mary would make a spring tonic using dandelions to pick up spirits. Berries made excellent sauces and juice. Mountain Mary died on November 16, 1819 at age 73. More than 1,000 people

attended her funeral, which was quite an honor. Some people call her Pennsylvania’s first “visiting nurse.” There are a lot of legends about Mountain Mary, including some that developed after her death. The strangest story is that she was engaged to a man named Theodore Benz, who fought and died with George Washington’s army in the Revolution. This story has never been proven, but as they say, in every legend is a

Local Caregiving Providers Finding

to Brighten the Days of Those They Care For!

At Central Penn Nursing Care, Inc., our “Home Care Heroes” continue to spend time with their clients. They go shopping

Senior Helpers provides in-home senior care. Our services range from specialized care for those with chronic diseases looking for assistance with daily activities to companion services to assist with transportation,

shopping and activities to keep them connected and engaged.

At the heart of our mission is enriching the lives of those we serve. In this challenging season where we are encouraged to keep safe physical distancing and shelter in place, we have to find more creative ways to meet the social, emotional and spiritual needs of our residents.

It’s just another example of the ‘Hill of Life’ in action!

for their groceries, they take them for walks, they make meals for them, they remind their clients to take their medication and they provide companionship during these difficult times.

We arranged for an outdoor hymn sing where Messiah College student Mackenzie Brubaker performed five mini outdoor concerts that residents could watch and listen to from their patios or balconies. Team members are assisting residents with staying connected to their loved ones through video chats or penning letters. As the weather warms up, our residents appreciate walks outside where they can enjoy the scenic views of the Conestoga Valley.

who got a job at the local zoo cleaning out the cages. The first couple of days went well until the keeper instructed him to clean the lion’s cage. The lad answered saying, “I am not going into the lion’s cage.” The keeper said, “Why not? He is tame and he was raised on milk.” The lad replied, “I was raised on milk too, but now I eat meat.” Jesus said, “be not afraid…do not fear…do not be anxious.” There are many types of fear. A reverential fear of God is a good thing. In Psalm 2:11 it says; “Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.” Certain fears are healthy. We are born with

two fears…the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Fear is the perception of danger. This fear too can be helpful in a serious life-

threatening situation; it heightens our awareness and makes adrenaline flow to possibly save your life. It enables the fight or flight

reaction. Other fears may come from our inability to control a situation. This fear is more often the biggest concern. Really, how often do we come into a lifethreatening situation? It’s the daily fears that cause alarm and emotional instability. For the believer, we are commanded to “Fear not.” Why…because Christ said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Fully 95% of our fears never materialize. Why do we spend so much non-productive time in fear, if that which we fear never happens? Fear is paralyzing. Fear will keep you from doing what you should do. I further suggest it reveals a

Now what am I going to do?” He is in control and His plan is good. He says to Israel in Jeremiah chapter 29 “to give you a future and a hope.” God is still in the future and hope business. Please don’t forget the next two verses in that chapter say; “Then you will call upon Me and pray to Me, and I will listen to you…you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all of your heart.” If you want peace in the midst of difficult times, seek Him at all times.

Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, April 8, 2020 - 15A

Fear is disabling for the Christian and is usually embroiled in doubt. Just look at a few examples from the Bible: because of fear, Abraham lied about Sara, his wife saying she was his sister when he went to Egypt. She was beautiful and he feared that Pharaoh would take her and kill him. Moses was fearful to speak for God and go to Pharaoh. The ten spies that were sent to look at the land they were to possess, but they feared the people of the land and caused Israel to wander in the desert for forty years because of unbelief. God told them in Joshua 3:10 He would drive the people out before you. Isaac lied about his wife Rebekah and said she was his sister. King Saul was afraid and his heart trembled when he saw the Philistines, so he sought out a witch instead of believing…he was filled with unbelief and fear. Saul also offered the sacrifice strictly forbidden when Samuel didn’t arrive in time. As a result, he lost his kingship over Israel. For the believer, fears are brought under control and diminished by the word of God and prayer. We have many promises…we either believe them or we don’t. Joshua 1:9 - “Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Next week we will look at how to handle fear…God’s Rx for fear.

School administrators and educators quickly scrambled to find a workaround to meet children’s educational needs. Remote learning has been a part of many school curriculums for some time. to design curriculums and assignments virtually on the fly in an attempt to minimize disruptions that could adversely affect students. Remote learning requires the cooperation of school staff and also parents and guardians. Patience is necessary, and parents and educators may need to completely transform their daily schedules. The

following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning. • Record class sessions. Teachers can consider recording or “going live” with class instruction so that students can view the video and still have access to their teachers. This helps parents who may be unfamiliar with explaining the curriculum. • Utilize chat features.

Bloomsburg University recently released their 20202021 roster of Husky Orientation and Welcome Leaders (H.O.W.Ls.) for the 2021-2022 academic year. Often the first point of contact for incoming stu dents and their families, H.O.W.Ls. are highly trained students who model and assist in a healthy transition to college life for fellow students. H.O.W.Ls. provide campus tours for prospective and new students and their families, facilitate the transition to college for small groups of new students, and serve as reliable sources of university information in an often-overwhelming time in a student’s academic career. “H.O.W.Ls. are critical to the smooth transition to college for new students,” explained Kristin Austin, Bloomsburg University Assis tant Director for New Student and Family Orientation. “They are their ‘go to’ mentors, leaders, and role models and help with everything from home sickness and roommate adjustment to where to get the best slice of pizza downtown.” • Maicy Herr from Lititz was selected as a H.O.W.L. for the 2020-2021 academic year. Herr is a Medical Imaging major and a member of the class of 2023. • Sierra Miron from Lititz was selected as a H.O.W.L. for the 2020-2021 academic year. Miron is a Mass Communication/Journalism major and a member of the class of 2021.

Stevens Fire Company Meals Help Lift Spirits During COVID-19

The Stevens Fire Company, along with caring and concerned community members, has been busy assembling and offering grab and go lunches on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at their station. A steady line of cars has been stopping to accept the generosity of those

who organized, as well as those who volunteered and donated an assortment of lunch items. This gesture of kindness has been something that has meant a lot to those hardest hit by the COVID-19 situation. Shown in the photo are volunteers who were working at a good pace to

keep up with the need at the drive-through. The work of assembling all the meal items was very coordinated and efficient. Shown from top left (clockwise) are Jared Weidman (fire company member) as he fills bags; a visitor pulls up to select among the meal options for the day; cutting up meat

#5. Dress for success: Even if you are working from the kitchen table for now, don’t hang out in your pajamas. Dress as though you are going into the office. Go out the front or back door of your home and re-enter your new place of work.

#4. Have a dedicated place to work: When you are “at work” let your family know it’s the same as if you were at the office or out on the road. It is even better if there is a door to your place of work that you can close behind you. It’s symbolic but helps establish a pattern of work. #3. Reverse it: When you leave that dedicated place to work, dedicate your time to your family. Give them all

of you once you leave that place of work in your home. #2. Take breaks: take breaks just as you would at work. For lunch, leave your place of work in your home and join your family for lunch. #1. Regular schedule: Try and keep your regular schedule as if you were going into the office. It will help you create as much normalcy as possible.

Ruthlene Adassa Dominique, most commonly called Adassa, is a junior at Cocalico High School for the 20192020 school year. An interesting fact about her is that she grew up in Haiti and moved to Pennsylvania a year ago. Along with her move to the United States, she continues to learn what it means to be an American as she carries her own culture. When reminiscing about her life back in Haiti, she emphasizes how much she misses the sun, and that Pennsylvania is colder than what she is used to. However, one surprising yet good change she has noticed is the school system she is used to. Back in Haiti, teachers would come and go while students would stay in one classroom for the rest of the day. She commented that it was very boring, and the change to the American system was surprisingly more exciting. In addition, Adassa had an impression that everywhere in America was like New York. To her surprise, however, she loved the idea of small boroughs and a great deal of beautiful land to survey. Adassa hopes to go to college and, for now, is thinking of majoring in communications. Her favorite class is English, and she loves to read mainly dystopian, romance, and biography books. Besides reading, she enjoys listening to ayisyen, kompa, r&b, and hip-hop music. Good luck to Adassa for the remainder of the school year! Written by: Melody Pha

When asked what his plans are after high school, he said, “Go into trade work because of my family background in it, get married, and start a family of my own.” Some of his hobbies are hunting, sports, and cars. He attends church at the Myerstown Charish Fellowship. Jabez’s passion for the Lord is sincere and pure. His wisdom of life as well as his desire to live with purpose is evident in his everyday walk. He will never pass up an opportunity to help someone, which shows his absolute humility and care for others. Hard work and commitment are also very apparent in Jabez’s life. Overall, he is a very well-rounded individual with a kind and loving personality, always striving to live for Jesus. Written by: Isaiah Lapp

Challenges Of Going Remote With Your Business

The number of pro fessionals working remotely has risen dramatically over the last decade-plus. Accord ing to an analysis from Flexjobs and Global Work place Analytics, there was a 159 percent increase in remote between 2005 and 2017. That shift toward remote work might have been silent and gradual for much of the 21st century, but the volume was ramped up during the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the United States in March 2020. In an effort to slow the spread of the potentially dangerous virus, government officials urged businesses to allow their employees to work

remotely, and just like that the number of remote workers skyrocketed. The internet has made it possible for businesses in various industries to go remote, but such a transition does have some unique challenges. • Software: Hasty tran sitions to remote work, like those forced by the COVID-19 outbreak, creat ed a crisis of sorts for companies that previously had not had many remote employees. Employees were suddenly asked to work on home computers that may or may not have had all the necessary applications for them to perform the daily tasks associated with their jobs. Companies that must transition to being remote, whether that transition is temporary or permanent, must recognize that remote employees will need access to software necessary to do their jobs. Workers who only have old computers at home

may need to be provided with computers that are compatible with the versions of software used in the office. • Communication: Comm unication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and pro mote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered. • Customer service: En suring customers can seam lessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. A 2014 study published in The Quarterly Journal of Economics even found that remote working

Lung Cancer?

allowed customer service staff to get through 13 percent more calls each day. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central manage ment platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues. Many businesses were thrown into the proverbial deep end when forced to go remote due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Challenges present themselves during such transitions, but these challenges can be overcome with a handful of effective strategies.

your own designs on the white space with markers. HOW TO BLOW OUT AN EGG If you prefer decorating eggs in which the raw contents have been blown out -- so that you can hang them from branches for an egg tree or display in a basket and save them year to year -- here is a simple process to empty them, plus two ideas for decorating once they have been blown. Poke a small hole with a large safety pin at each end of a washed raw egg. Carefully wiggle the pin or a toothpick into one of the holes to break the yolk. Place a drinking straw over the hole on top, and blow through the straw, collecting the contents of the egg in a small dish. Rinse out the empty shell and let dry completely before decorating. DECORATE Squeeze household glue from a plastic bottle in a simple design such as zigzags or an alphabet letter on a shell that is still white or dyed in a light color. Carefully set the egg in a plastic bag with colored sand or glitter and close it lightly in your fist, keeping locked air inside. Gently shake to coat the glue to reveal the design. Remove the egg, and slip onto a skewer through one of the holes and poke into a soft object like an egg carton to dry. SHREDDED PAPER Brush household glue on eggshell, then press shredded paper randomly around it for a contemporary look. Let dry. *** Sandpaper Crayon Art I have a variety of bright, chubby crayons my toddlerage granddaughter loves to grab tightly in her fist and press on paper, or to be honest, anything in reach. I’ve also observed older school-age kids who enjoy pressing crayons firmly on paper to express themselves

with designs and images. This activity using sandpaper for the “paper” is an interesting twist for engaging those impulses to create with verve, while enhancing a child’s natural creativity and love of art. It’s an easy technique to offer a new expression using everyday crayons in bright colors and sandpaper out of the toolbox. The texture of sandpaper will create a beautiful picture composed of tiny dots that might resemble pointillism, a painting technique used by postimpressionist painter Georges Seurat. He used thousands of dots of color that you can see up close but that blend into an image when you step back, away from the painting. Try these steps to create a clever piece of pointillistlike art in seconds. What is the magic ingredient? A dot, your kids might say. Uh-uh. It’s an iron! Here’s the stuff and the fun: 1. Pick out an array of bright crayons. Vibrant blues, greens, purples and

reds are ideal. 2. Create a drawing on a sheet of medium-grain sandpaper, pressing very hard as you color. Designs that use blocks of color rather than thick lines work best here. 3. When the drawing is done, turn the sandpaper over on top of a plain, white piece of drawing or construction paper. An adult should heat an iron on a low temp, and iron the backside of the sandpaper as if ironing a hanky. Pass it over the back evenly and slowly, counting to 20 seconds with your kids before picking up the sandpaper to reveal the picture on the paper in dot form. 4. There it is. Sandpaper pointillism. Never mind French postimpressionists for the moment. You’ll have your own very “impressive” artist in residence. Encourage your child to look closely to see the dots, then step away and discover how they blend together. Note how crayon melted on the sandpaper, too, providing a “two for one” art project. *** Donna Erickson’s awardwinning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Automotive or wood board. For a little extra scrub, sprinkle the lemon with salt. Rinse and air dry. * “To reach the highest cobweb or the lowest dust bunnies, get a yardstick and cover one end with an old tube sock. Use a rubber band to secure it to the stick and you can use it to swipe at the high corners of your rooms or slide it under the furniture. Works like a charm.” -- E.T. in Michigan * “Having a fancy dinner where you’ll serve wine? You can pour box wine into a glass decanter. It will look and taste better because decanting aerates wine.” -O.D. in Washington * Set a timer to remember to add softener to your load of laundry, and another for when the load is done. Buzzers can’t always be heard, and it’s best to not let your wet laundry sit. * For oven spillovers, saturate a washcloth and lay over the mess when the oven has almost cooled. The heat will couple with the moisture to loosen it! * To loosen dirt in window tracks, try this trick: Sprinkle baking soda along the track, and use a detail brush to loosen stuck dirt. Vacuum out debris, and then dust with a lightly damp rag. Should be clean! * “Do you still watch DVDs? I do, and when they get a scratch, you can try

* Turn on the hot water for three or four minutes to loosen debris on shower walls. It’s much easier to clean when the tile is warm and steamy. * Here’s a great storage solution: screw a metal magazine holder to the inside of a cabinet door. Do this in the bathroom to store a hair dryer or other hair tools. In the kitchen, it makes a wonderful holder for smaller pot lids or foil, wax paper, parchment, etc. * Manners check: “If you are getting into line at a shop, it’s time to end your call. When you try to continue your phone conversation, it means the cashier can’t effectively communicate with you and you risk holding up the line. If the call is that important, just wait until you end it to get in line. Thank you!” -M.R. in Virginia * When arranging your fridge, keep the better choices at eye level and easy to grab. * Get rid of smelly stains on your cutting board with a lemon. Use the cut side of a lemon to scrub your plastic

this trick: Rub the surface with a little clear lip balm. Buff from center to edge in a straight line. The balm fills the cracks, making it watchable.” -- F. in Georgia * Dollar stores and other discount chains are great places to pick up cleaning supplies, paper goods and school supplies on the cheap. They carry national brands that can save you a bundle. * If you’re able to, fold and hang clothing straight from the dryer. The warmth of a cycle can set wrinkles that occur from being stuffed into a laundry basket. * “I really abhor bar soap, but my husband prefers it. After cleaning the soap dish, I smear it with petroleum jelly. I do the underside too. There’s a little lip that will keep the soap from sliding off, but the petroleum jelly keeps the inevitable sludge from sticking to the soap dish, making my cleaning routine much easier!” -A.D. in Idaho * For maximum effectiveness, spray, then wait, then wipe. Spray cleaners need contact time to both cut through grime and to kill germs. Give surfaces a light mist, then wait up to 10 minutes before wiping clean. * To make an avocado rose as a garnish, place half an avocado cut side down and slice. Fan the slices out into a long line, then wrap around

into a spiral shape. * Chef’s secret: If you sprinkle salt from 12-14 inches above the food you’re seasoning, it’s called “raining,” and it helps the salt crystals to distribute evenly across the food’s surface. Plus it will make you look cool. * “If your pup has an upset stomach, you can try giving him kefir. It’s packed with probiotics and is especially good if Fido is on antibiotics or has a yeast problem. Not too much. Just a tablespoon as a treat once a day.” -- B.T. in Texas * “Kids do love their sneakers, but sometimes when a kid loves his sneakers too much and wears them every day, those sneakers don’t love the family back. In short, they stink. We filled a pair of socks with a mix of the crystal kitty litter and the detergent-boosting beads that smell so good. At night, Junior takes his sneaks off and stuffs these mock socks inside. The litter absorbs moisture, and the beads leave them smelling pretty good.” -- D.D. in Missouri * “For a clean look in our bathroom, we use clear pump bottles for shampoo, conditioner and body wash. I refill them as needed, and it’s so much nicer than having 10 different partially filled bottles in the bathtub.”
