John Beck Elementary School Students Enjoy Fine Arts Day

Students rotated throughout the various presentations and had the opportunity to learn about the multitude of creative artistic outlets that are out there. Ephrata Unleashed Dog Park Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Ephrata Unleashed Dog Park on Saturday, April 1 to celebrate the opening of the long-anticipated park. This project, which began in 2016, finally took shape in 2020 when the Borough of Ephrata dedicated land and finances to building the

park. A community committee was formed, in partnership with the Borough and Mainspring of Ephrata, which planned for the amenities inside the park, held several fundraising events, and won a $25,000 PetSafe® grant to complete the project.

The ribbon-cutting preceded the K-9 Eggstravaganza fundraising event. A barkless auction, raffles, treat and merchandise sales, photos with the Easter bunny, and of course, the egg hunt for our canine family has become an annual event and raised nearly $2,400 this year.

John “Jack” M. Cogley

John “Jack” M. Cogley of Reinholds PA passed on Wednesday March 29, 2023. He was the son of John J. Cogley and Jeannette Heller of Lebanon, PA. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sara Wike, his sons Scott Cogley and Joshua Cogley, his daughter-in-law Bianca Cordova, his grandsons Miles and Jethro Cogley, and granddaughters Aurelia and Beatrix “Trixie” Cogley.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and Windjammer cruises. He served in the Navy and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was a lifetime member of the Reinholds

Eric W. Snyder

Eric W. Snyder, 57, of Reinholds, passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Ephrata to Edith (Smith) Snyder and the late Carl Snyder and was the husband of Barbara (Wenrich) Snyder.

Eric was a manager for Willscot Mobile Mini, Inc. He was a veteran of the US Army and a member of Reinholds Post #6759 VFW and Cushion Peak Rod & Gun Club. Eric enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the cabin in Troy, PA, or fishing on his boat in Delaware.

Hoovers Celebrate 70th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Harry and Irene Hoover of Ephrata, would like to announce their 70th anniversary. They were married on April 4, 1953 at Ephrata United Zion by the bride’s father, Martin Showalter.

Harry was self-employed as a carpenter. Irene was employed by Weaver Markets in the banquet hall. Their hobbies include traveling, spending time with family, gardening, going to sales and gospel concerts. They are also members of Indiantown Mennonite Church.

They are the parents of Mary (Ernie) Hurst, Marty (Lois) Hoover, Glenda (Randy) Hollinger, Sue Nissley and John (Diana) Hoover. They have 19 grandchildren and 42 greatgrandchildren.

Recently, our dear friend, “der Pit Schtiwwelgnecht,” Leonard Shupp, of Whitehall, Lehigh County sent us a copy of Die Nacht Vor Grischtdaag, which was reprinted by the late “Pumpernickle Bill,” William S. Troxel in 1943 in the Allentown “Morning Call.” “Pumpernickle Bill” wrote Dutch columns for the “Call” from 1925 to 1957. Die Nacht Vor Grischtdaag was first printed in the “Morning Call” in 1920.

Since Solomon DeLong, whose Dutch pen name was “Obediah Grouthomel,” was “Pumpernickel Bill’s immediate predecessor as the Dutch columnist in the “Morning Call,” we want to call attention to the life and work of “Obediah Grouthomel” this week. Solomon DeLong was born at Schnecksville in Lehigh County on February 8, 1849. Solomon received his early education in the local public schools and when 16 years of age, he attended Fort Edward Institute at Ford Edward, New York. Later, he attended the Union Seminary at New Berlin and still later, Freeland Seminary, now Ursinus College at Collegeville. He taught public school for a number of years, including a year or two at Kecks School, above Laury’s in Lehigh County. In 1871, he started working for the Pfaelzer Brothers wholesale jewelry company in Philadelphia as the head bookkeeper. In 1875, he and Samuel Kind formed a partnership and opened a jewelry store on Market Street in

“Pieces From The Past” continues this week, featuring the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies.

Shown in the photo, from left to right, are members of the Widder family of Murrell including Israel, Lizzie, Mary and wife Leah. The Widders were a prominent family who ran a general store in Murrell for many years. Lizzie Widder died in the 1940s and left her home and contents to the Borough of Ephrata to establish a museum and library in the area. The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley is devoted to the geographic region, which includes the present townships of East and West Cocalico, Ephrata,

Clay, West Earl and a portion of Earl. The Society collects and interprets a wide range of objects, from high-end antiques to the humble and the quirky. All contribute to our understanding of the region and its inhabitants from around the time of European settlement into the 21st century. In addition, the Society maintains a large and continually growing collection of manuscripts, print items and photographs. We have looked at God’s kindness, restraint and patience, which leads us to a change of mind… repentance. We also considered God’s patience for the unbeliever in salvation and the believer in sanctification. Now for our final installment we look toward our nation. God’s patience, and kindness should lead us to repentance.

Billy Graham once said, “If God doesn’t judge America He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.” If ever we needed repentance (180 degree change of mind) as a nation, it is now. God has blessed this country because its foundation was biblical. Countries from all over the world have

The Bible is clear, many travel the road of destruction but few are on the narrow path that leads to salvation (Matthew 7:14). This is true of our nation as well, most citizens weren’t/aren’t truly a Christian. The difference is in the past. We at least held to similar values and beliefs. Biblical principles and commands are written into the DNA of the universe. No one breaks the law of God… they may break themselves against God’s law.

Today, we have no common core of beliefs.

We are more divided then any time in our history as a nation in regard to our worldview. Remember the words of our Lord, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” When Israel turned from God’s law and worshiped false gods He brought judgment. As longsuffering and patient as God is according to our verse, He wants repentance and turning back to truth, justice and righteousness, which are the byproducts of true worship. Do you remember the Maniac of Gadara of whom Christ cast out the legion of demons? He cast them into the large herd of pigs who were nearby. What happened next? The pigs rushed violently down

God always called out the Jewish nation for their rebellion, sending His Prophets so that they would repent and return. Make no mistake about it, God will and does judge. One verse that comes to mind is Zephaniah 1:12: “At that time I will search in Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are complacent, those who say in their hearts, The Lord will not do good, nor will he do ill.” I can’t help but think of Ukraine and Russia.

As a nation the only prescription for this ailment is repentance and seeking God’s forgiveness. We need a revival in the worst way.

We are not the salt and light we need to be. Salt was a preservative in the ancient world. It prevented meat from rotting. Light dispels darkness. Could it be that we are the problem? It’s a spiritual battle that we face. The forces of evil are prevailing due to our neglect. We need to be willing to say the uncomfortable, offer a challenge, and speak the truth in love.

There is no better way to close: “If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Let’s not think lightly of the goodness, kindness and patience of God, it’s time (Romans 13:11a) “and that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep!”

Philadelphia. In 1877, Mr. DeLong sold out his interests to his partner and moved to Slatington, where he opened a stationery and novelty store and operated it for 13 years. When the Slatington Rolling Mill was built in 1890, DeLong sold his business and became the secretary of the new firm. Later, he became the secretary-treasurer. In 1906, he became the general manager and served until the plant closed in 1912.

In Slatington, DeLong served as a town councilman and became its burgess for one term. In 1912, DeLong moved to Allentown, where he resided until his death on February 2, 1925. His age at the time of his death was 75 years, 11 months and 23 days. From 1913 to the time of his death in 1925, Solomon DeLong’s Dutch columns appeared in the Allentown “Morning Call” several times a week. Writing under the pen name of “Obediah Grouthomel,” DeLong used a subtle wit and satire to depict the traditions and the foibles of the Pennsylvania Dutch he knew and encountered on his visits to gathering places in the area where the “Morning Call” was read. The “Morning Call” wrote at the time of his death:

“He would sit with the village gatherings at country stores, blacksmith shops, hotels and other assembling places, absorbing the community lore, becoming a member in spirit of every group, all in preparation for a later intimate pen study of individuals and groups, particularly with respect to the lighter and brighter things of life.”

“Tens of thousands of readers of the Morning Call never missed the delight of reading an Obediah Grouthomel letter. It is pretty safe to say that hardly a name was better known locally than his. …Letters, postcards, communications of all sorts reached him in greater abundance than is common to the average newspaper worker whose efforts are swallowed up in the anonymity that surrounds all but a very little of a

Weiss Named To Dean’s Honor Roll

Student Spotlight

Cocalico High School

Wyatt Martin Senior

Wyatt Martin, son of Amber and Jason Martin, has been working hard his senior year in and out of school. Wyatt is currently taking Accounting II, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, and Financial Literacy. He plans to carry over all of this studying into Lebanon Valley College and stated, “I don’t really have a dream career, but I am looking into actuarial science.” Wyatt’s tireless work has allowed him to maintain a 4.0 GPA all through high school, despite his AP and other difficult classes, which is something he is very proud of. During his demanding schedule, he also plays tennis, this year even gaining the opportunity to play on varsity doubles.

However, Wyatt’s work does not stop in school. He currently works as a grocery stocker at Weaver Markets in Denver. He also volunteers at his church, helping out in the children’s library. Amidst all of his activities, Wyatt likes to find time to read, play video games, and listen to music. He also has some dream destinations. He said, “I think it would be cool to visit parts of Europe, maybe areas of ancient Rome or Greece.” When Wyatt finally makes it there in the future, in between seeing the artifacts and scenery, maybe he will be able to play tennis or new video games. Nevertheless, Wyatt will continue to be himself wherever he goes in life, accurately following the advice of his favorite artist, NF, who states, “The real you is who you are when ain’t nobody watching.”

Mayra Lawler

Senior

Mayra Lawler is the daughter of John and Aggie Lawler. Mayra was adopted at the age of two from Guatemala. She has three brothers and three sisters. What Mayra enjoys most about school is the fact that she is able to take multiple dual credit classes as a senior and that she has a wide variety of options her senior year in terms of education and preparing for college. During her time at LCS, she has participated in many school extracurricular activities such as playing volleyball in her freshman and sophomore years, and participating in the school musical in her junior and senior years. Mayra is also involved in National Honor Society. In her free time she enjoys reading, drawing, painting, knitting, and sewing. She is very involved with her church, Faith Bible Fellowship Church, which she has attended since the age of three. She has now come full circle, and helps with the toddlers as a high schooler. After high school, Mayra plans to attend Grace College for her Bachelors in Science in Counseling. After getting her Bachelors Degree with a concentration in Substance Abuse and Addictions, Mayra plans on working and eventually getting her Masters degree and becoming a certified counselor.
