1965
As a 1944 Milton Hershey Co-founders School graduate, John W. Hocking John and Janie Hocking (1963) always had the drive to succeed. After having worked as a linotype operator at various newspapers, he decided, at the age of 27, to open his own one-man print shop in 1953. April 8, 20 20 A decade later, seeing the need April 14, 1965 for a free community newspaper, he started The Shopping News of Lancaster County to publish ads for local businesses, community happenings and events of interest. After months of hard work by John, his wife Janie, family members and friends, the very first issue of The Shopping News hit the streets on Below: The East Main Street building, renovated in 2019, as it stands today. April 14, 1965. The paper began as a 1/2 tab, 24-page booklet mailed biweekly to only 10,000 homes.

Crews battle the blaze on February 7, 1986
1972 Business thrived over the following years and the company soon outgrew the Hockings’ original building on Orange Street in Ephrata. In 1972, the plant on East Main Street was purchased. The building was originally the East End Planing Mill, but was renovated for use by The Shopping News.
1986 In February 1986, a fire completely destroyed the East Main Street building. About to turn 60 years old, founder John Hocking made the decision to rebuild the plant. The Shopping News missed only one week’s publication and delivery thanks to the dedication of the employees, friends and business associates. For the next eleven months, many of the production aspects of the paper were handled by Lebanon’s Kapp Advertising. Kapp’s founders, Rob and Erma Kapp, provided guidance pivotal to the founding of the Shopping News in 1965. The new East Main Street
Terre Hill
building was finished and occupied by June 1987.
2020 Today, The Shopping News of Lancaster County is a full tab community newspaper employing over 68 people. The paper is delivered weekly to 38,000 local homes and businesses in Northern Lancaster County, as well as parts of Lebanon and Berks Counties. The Shopping News has been recognized by and received awards from both national and regional free paper organizations for ad creativity and paper-wide general excellence. Janie Hocking passed away on November 21, 1993 and John Hocking passed away on January 19, 2014. The business is now owned and operated by their daughter, Julie Hocking. She and her management team of Harold Wenger and Pam Boyer, along with all of the other Shopping News staff, continue to work diligently to deliver a quality community newspaper to your home each week!

7 Ways To Dine ‘Out’ When Staying In
As restaurants, bars and taverns have closed their doors voluntarily or under government orders amid the public health crisis surrounding COVID-19, a population accustomed to
the freedom of dining out for special occasions or as part of daily life has found they must make an assortment of changes. However, it’s still possible to enjoy the offerings of your favorite restaurants. Restaurants have made some dramatic changes in an effort to meet the needs of their customers. • Oven-ready meals: Some restaurants are offering oven-ready meals with fully prepared dishes that

customers need only heat up at home. • Deep discounts: Certain businesses are cutting prices on menu items in order to generate revenue. Other restaurants are shuttering dining rooms and providing discounts on take-out as incentives to customers. • Prepaid options: The reservation service Resy has opened up its service to restaurant owners to offer take-out meals restaurant guests can book and pay for online. Other reservation businesses may soon follow suit. • To-go party plans: CEC
Entertainment, the parent company of the Chuck E. Cheese and Peter Piper Pizza restaurants, said the concepts would launch new family and birthday packages that included takeout pizza, birthday cake and goodie bags, in addition to two game apps for Chuck E. Cheese that provided virtual tickets redeemable at a later date when restaurants reopen. • Pre-packaged favorites: Certain chain restaurants have long offered frozen selections of their popular appetizers and other dishes. When at the supermarket, check the freezer section for items from restaurants like TGI Fridays™ and PF Chang’s™. Takeout has become the new norm as people are urged to stay home instead of dining out in crowds.

* In 1883, Bill Kinsman of Tombstone, Arizona, was the subject of a practical joke when the Tombstone Epitaph announced his intention to marry one May Woodman. The surprised future groom countered with a notice of his own that he had no such plans whatsoever -- and was soon after shot to death by the deeply humiliated Ms. Woodman. * “Cenosillicaphobia” is the fear of an empty beer glass. (Use this one to impress your friends during Happy Hour.) * Turning back the giant hands on Big Ben’s four clock faces takes an astonishing total of five hours. * Alexandre Dumas, best known for “The Three Musketeers” and “The Count of Monte Cristo,” felt very strongly that all his works must be presented on colored paper. He wanted all his fiction presented on blue paper, his articles on pink paper and his poetry on yellow paper. * Golf balls were originally made from dried cow eyeballs. * The tea bag was an accidental invention. In 1908, tea merchant Thomas Sullivan distributed his samples in small silken sacks. His customers, not realizing they were samples, dunked them in hot water, and Sullivan soon found himself swamped with orders for his “tea bags”! * In his travels, Marco Polo believed at one point that he had stumbled across unicorns, writing that “They are very ugly brutes to look at. They are not at all such as we describe unicorns.” Not surprising, considering that he was actually viewing rhinoceroses. * Ancient Romans created black hair dye by fermenting leeches in vinegar.

* The game of marbles is estimated to be about 5,000 years old. Through most of their history, the toys were made of stone, bone, clay or whatever material was available, with truly round marbles being both rare and expensive. * Ever wondered why those athletic lace-ups on your feet are called sneakers? The moniker came about in the late 1800s, from their rubber soles that allowed people to walk or “sneak” around without a sound. * Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books were once used as post-World War II propaganda. German translations soon followed, with a similar goal. * During the mid-1970s, author Anne Fine walked by a shop selling jewelry and old furs, the proprietor of which was a Madame Doubtfire. Fine recalled the name in 1986 when she wrote her novel “Madame Doubtfire.” Her one request to makers of the film starring Robin Williams and Sally Field was that they “not make the children bratty, and they did indulge me in that.” * Believing he had been cursed for killing two

Business Shines A Star Of Hope
Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck By: The Late C. Richard Beam A collection of “Deitsch Eck” columns from past issues of The Shopping News honoring the late C. Richard Beam.
(Originally published in the September 15, 1982 issue of The Shopping News)
Located in Akron, local business Melron Industries has turned on their large star, which is usually reserved for the holiday season including Thanksgiving and Christmas. The star, which is a sign of peace and hope,
was originally created by Irv Hoover, owner of the former Akron Nursery, will illuminate the area and bring a sense a calm and serenity during this time in our lives. The star will remain lit until life inevitably returns
back to normal in Northern Lancaster County. Shown in the photo, from left to right, practicing social distancing is Joyce Hoover, Jeff Lied and Deb Lied.

Dutch Prayers and Songs From The Thomas R. Brendle Collection Of Pennsylvania German Folklore 1. Ein gleines Kind, as beten kann, Des hot der liewe Heiland gern. A small child, that can pray, Is loved by the dear Savior. *** 2. Soll diese Nacht die letschde sei, In dieser Yammerdaal, So nimm mich, Harr, zu Himmel ein, Zu auserwehlder Schaar. Should this night be the last, In this vale of tears, So take me, Lord, into heaven, To the assembly of the elect. *** 3. Was mich auf dieser Welt betriebt, Das wehrt eine kurzi Zeit; Was aber meine Seele liebt, Das bleibt in Ewichkeit. That which troubles me in
this world, That lasts a short time; But that which my soul loves, That remains in eternity. *** 4. Meine Heimaat ist nicht hier, Meine Heimaat ist nicht hier. Ich weiss eine bessre Heimaat als dies, Meine Heimaat ist nicht hier. My home is not here, My home is not here. I know of a better home than this one, My home is not here. *** 5. Ich wein, ich bet, Ich schau den Himmel aa. Ich bin ein armer Pilger hier, Un gehn noch Kaa-naaaan. I weep, I pray, I look to the heavens. I am a poor pilgrim here And go toward Canaan. *** It is appropriate this week that we print a few items from The Thomas R. Brendle Collection of Pennsylvania German Folklore, one of the finest collections of Pennsylvania Dutch folklore in existence. The Brendle Collection is named after
“the Dean of Pennsylvania Dutch folklorists,” the late Rev. Thomas Royce Brendle, who served as a clergyman for 50 years in the Reformed Church. Rev. Brendle collected most of this lore between 1925 and 1950 in Lebanon, Montgomery and Lehigh Counties. The Brendle Collection was given to Historic Schaefferstown, Inc. by Rev. Brendle. We are now preparing the first volume for publication. The five items above will give you a bit of an idea of the contents. *** Since some of the readers of this Eck attended schools taught by my mother, Marcella Lydia Slabach Beam, who was born on September 15, 1902, we would like to point out, had she lived, today would have been her 80th birthday. Marcella Lydia Slabach was possibly the last in a long line of Lydia Slabachs. The tombstones of the earlier Lydia Slabachs can be seen in the oldest part of the Muddy Creek Cemetery, which contains some of the finest examples of tombstone folk art in these parts. Recently, we revisited this cemetery and the historic Reamstown Cemetery, which boasts many excellent old grave markers. September 15, 1982 Es Bischli-Gnippli

8th Grade Woosh! He has it, he’s almost there, TOUCHDOWN! Jeremiah Knowles has done it again. A flawless run! Jeremiah Knowles is an excellent quarterback who plays more than just one sport - not only football, but also basketball, baseball, volleyball, and track! He really enjoys being active. His family is very important to him, and they love to be active with him. Jeremiah has six siblings and is the son of Dave and Janina Knowles. He enjoys hiking and biking with his family when they can all be together. They all attend The Living Room Church, where he enjoys youth group and growing in the Word of God. When Jeremiah has time, he loves fishing with his cousins, brother, and dad. Just the satisfaction of knowing he caught a fish is enough to put a smile on his face. At other times he likes to build things. Jeremiah and his brother have just finished an obstacle for their Ninja Warrior obstacle course! He says he enjoys just seeing random pieces of junk turned into something unique. With his interest in building and his active lifestyle, it makes sense that he excels in his favorite subjects at school: math, science, and gym class. Although Jeremiah does not know right now what he wants to do when he graduates, he does know he will be going to Ephrata High School after he finishes 8th grade at Hinkletown Mennonite School, and he hopes to keep being active by traveling around the world. “Tupperware Lady!”
Sophomore To completely describe Jack would require much more than this brief article, but hopefully, these few words will give a well-rounded overview. Jackson Good is a sophomore at Ephrata Mennonite School. For passing the time, he enjoys participating in different sports and spending time with his friends. Out of the many different sports there are to love, Jack prefers taking part in the great sport of basketball. In school, Jack’s favored subject is literature. This subject is enjoyable to him because he delights in diving into intriguing and alluring books. Jack’s most motivating Bible character is Abraham because of the immense faith Abraham displayed towards God. Looking towards the future, Jack’s dream occupation would be to become a skit or play writer. The reason he would relish or aspire to become this type of writer is because of the two great personality traits that are combined. This occupation blends unique creativity with the load-lifting infusion of humor, which greatly appeals to Jack’s tastes. In conclusion, I asked Jack how he would want to bring change to the world. He responded by describing that he would want to eradicate the coronavirus throughout the world once and for all because of all the detrimental impacts it has had over the last several months. two sons, Sam and John and two daughters, Rebecca and Anne. Joseph planned a plantation with fruit trees and for two years, Joseph and Sarah and their sons and daughters worked tirelessly to clear the land and make a home for the Finney family. Unfortunately, Joseph died in 1734, only a few years after making their homestead. Not long after that, Sam and John died also. Making a life in the wilderness was no easy task! Sarah was left alone in the frontier, with her two daughters. Her family wanted her to return to Philadelphia, but she decided to stay at their homestead. She couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the land they had worked so hard to settle. Her home became a haven and rest stop for travelers, hunters, trappers and Native Americans as they walked or rode along the Perkiomen Path. Sarah always had fresh bread, soup or stew on the hearth for those who stopped. And, oh yes, her
Hiester and the Lenape Indians. She said she got along better with the Lenape than she did with Thomas and Richard Penn and Thomas Lawrence! She felt that they represented landhungry businessmen. As owner of the property adjacent to hers, they had mapped out a city plan and were after her prime property. Sarah died in December of 1743 and the deed to the property went to Rebecca. With the help of clever land agents and surveyors, the Penns were eventually able to acquire the prominent site from the widow’s heirs and build their town at the best location. And, the rest, so they say, is history! Written by women’s historian and educator, Hallie Vaughan, “Reading: The Town of Widow Finney” was originally published on the Berks History Center’s blog as part of their mission
pies were made with the fresh fruit from the orchard! Occasionally, a traveler might spend the night. Her homestead was so well-liked that the area that is now known as the city of Reading, was once called The Town of Widow Finney! For more than ten years Sarah welcomed and chatted with Conrad Weiser, Mordecai Lincoln, Joseph

The Berks History Center Museum & Research Library are currently closed and will remain closed through the end of April to ensure the health and safety of the community. During this time, the Berks History Center staff is working remotely to continue to share stories like this, through their digital platforms and publications like The Shopping News of Lancaster County. Reading: The Town of Widow Finney Have you ever eaten at The Speckled Hen (on the corner of South 4th and Cherry Streets in downtown Reading)? For the longest time, historians thought that this log cabin had been the home of Sarah Finney, better known as Widow Finney. Later it was speculated that the original Finney home was further down the block where Judy’s on Cherry is located today, while others believe it was located closer to the river. Unfortunately, there is no historical or archaeological evidence that indicates the exact location of Finney’s residence. However, we know quite a bit about Sarah Finney and the substantial impact she had on her community. Sarah was born around 1685 in Philadelphia, to what we might call “well-todo” parents. She married Joseph Finney and the two of them decided to make a life of their own as homesteaders near the ford in the Schuylkill River along what was called the Perkiomen Path. They had

Stopping Illnesses In Nursing Homes
Millions of elderly and incapacitated individuals find long-term care facilities are the safest places to reside and receive both medical care and assistance with daily living requirements. Nursing homes aim to keep residents safe and healthy, and in order to do so important precautions need to be taken not only by staff members, but by friends and family who visit their loved ones in nursing home facilities. Infectious diseases can spread easily through nursing homes if visitors are not careful. Age and compromised immune systems, which are common among many people who live in long-term care facilities, elevate residents’ risk for disease. A nursing home outside of Seattle was the site of one of first cases of COVID-19 on American soil. As of early March 2020, thirteen residents of the facility contracted and died from COVID-19, an additional 11 deaths were being investigated but had not yet been attributed to the novel virus that dominated headlines. In many nursing homes, residents share rooms, and common areas are small, making residents vulnerable to infections that are transmitted from person to person, advises the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. And the open-door policy
of many facilities can make it easy for diseases to find their way in. These pointers can help reduce the risk for disease transmission. • Visitors should not come into the facility if they have symptoms of respiratory infections or other illnesses that are easily transmissible. • Employees should stay home if they are sick.
• Good infection prevention and control techniques always should be implemented. These include cleaning hands before and after touching another resident. Cleaning and disinfecting environmental surfaces, removing soiled items, and wearing personal protective equipment is advised. • Residents, workers and
visitors should practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette by coughing and sneezing into the crooks of their elbows rather than into their hands. • The CDC says alcoholbased hand rub should be available in every resident’s room. • Restrict residents with any contagious illnesses to their rooms. If they need to be moved for testing or other reasons, have them wear correct safety items, like facemasks. • Healthcare personnel who may work other jobs, such as those in other facilities, should exercise extreme caution after caring for an individual with an infectious disease. • Guests should wear gowns when visiting someone who has a virus or type of bacteria that can be transmitted through direct contact. In fact, many nursing homes in the local area are not open any more to guests. Contact any nursing home before visiting to find out what they policy is during this time.

THIS WEEK’S
Biblical Message
How to handle fear; God’s Rx Author: Wenger Scripture: Psalms 34:4 “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” We must first know that it’s the Lord alone who can bring lasting and true peace
in a storm. Peter’s testimony makes this clear. When many of Christ’s followers were turning away, Christ said to the twelve, “You don’t want to go away also, do you?” Peter said, “To whom else shall we go? You have words of eternal life.” We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:66-69). We need to seek Him. “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13). We are quick to say God doesn’t show up for me, but I know from the scripture that you didn’t seek Him with all of your heart. Part of the problem is that we think God is a genie who exists
to serve us. It’s really about submission to His will, not the other way around. Remember what happened when the disciples crossed
the Sea of Galilee? The disciples were in the boat and a storm blew up. The waves were breaking over the boat. Jesus was asleep

in the stern and they woke Him up saying, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. He said to them, “Why were you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Then they became very much afraid and said to one another, “who is this that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” You see, fear and faith cannot both occupy the same space at the same time. The disciples doubted the goodness and sovereignty of God when they said, “do you not care that we are perishing?” Doubting the goodness of God created their fear. God
cares! Fear is doubt and disbelief in the sovereignty and goodness of God. We fear that God doesn’t have good intentions. We doubt that He is in control. God is still in control. He didn’t create the universe and then retire. He cares. He is in control. He is good. His will is good. That doesn’t mean it won’t be difficult. Now that we understand the source of some of our fears, let’s look at the solution for those fears. We are instructed to “Cast all of our cares on Him - (why) because He cares for you!” (1 Peter 5:7). We are going to have fears and cares in this life, it’s inevitable. Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, April 15, 2020 - 15A
He cared enough to die on a cross for us, surely He cares about our daily lives. We serve a risen Savior. If fear has roots in doubt, faith begets trust. Let’s put away doubt and fear and take up faith and trust…trust in His goodness and His plan for our life. What we fill our minds with will direct out thoughts and actions. Fill your mind with calamity, despair and trouble and you will think and act accordingly. Philippians 4:8 is our guide for the mind. It declares, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and
if there be any praise, think on these things.” All I have to do is say Coronavirus and you get the point. I am not saying be uninformed or walk in the dark. What we meditate on or fill our minds with will dominate our life. So, what is God’s Rx for fear? We must seek Him with all of our heart, not halfheartedly, but daily. We must understand God is good. His plan is good, though it may be difficult. He cares and wants us to place all of our fears and concerns under His control. Fill our minds with the good, lovely, pure honest, virtues, praiseworthy and to meditate on them. We serve a risen Savior. God is still on the throne and He cares! Exchange our doubt and fear for faith and trust.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Your recent article about giving CBD oil to pets omitted an important factor: its effect on the eyes. Past research has shown that CBD causes eye pressure to spike in humans, and the same issue was noted in a study with rodents. Popular media has not noted this. CBD oil should be given to pets only with appropriate oversight from an animal specialist able to measure eye pressure. — Dr. Denise Valenti DEAR DR. VALENTI: Thank you for the update. I had not seen the research on this, and it is important for pet owners to know about this possible side effect of CBD (cannabidiol). A 2006 study at the University of Aberdeen of human glaucoma patients found that a fairly high dose, 40 mg of CBD oil, administered sublingually (under the tongue) caused a temporary rise in intraocular pressure. (A lower dose, 20 mg, did not cause the same problem.) And a more recent study at Indiana University found that mice given CBD oil experienced a similar rise in interocular pressure. The study found that when THC and CBD were given together, the THC blocked CBD’s effects on eye pressure — but because THC also IS the component of marijuana that makes a person (or pet) high, it opens a whole other kettle of fish. A few weeks ago, Donald and Nancy Weist of Royer Road, Ephrata enjoyed a special “social distancing” get together with their daughter, Wendy Zemanick and her husband Tom. The visit was extra special because all of Wendy’s daughters (who live in Philadelphia, Colorado, State College and Elverson), were all together for the visit. Shown in the photos are: Left photo: The family enjoying each other’s company. Top right: Donald, who is retired from Weist Bros. Electric and his wife Nancy. Bottom right (left to right): Eve Storms, Brianna Storms, Jillian Storms, Rachel Storms, Tom Zemanick and Wendy Weist Zemanick.
