Heritage In The Pennsylvania Heartland - Colonial Era Printing Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese This week, Shopping News readers will learn about Colonial Era printing done at the Ephrata Cloister. Many people drive by the Ephrata Cloister on Route 322 (also known as West Main Street in Ephrata) without knowing the significance of the local historic site. Local auctioneer Tom Horst (shown in photo) of Horst Auctioneers will describe various types of printing done by the Brotherhood and household members at The Ephrata Cloister back in the 18th century. Also shown in the photo are two framed printed broadsides (which are defined as a single sheet print, intending for display or trade advertising), two small paper bound booklets and the massive “Martyrs Mirror.” Additional infor mation about these items will be described in detail later in this article. The founding of Ephrata started along the Cocalico Creek by a pietist movement that settled there, led by Johann Conrad Beissel, who had immigrated from Eber bach, Germany. While living in the Germantown area, Beissel was a minister in the early German Baptist Breth ren Church and from 1728 to1730, he wrote three books (Continued On Page 2A)

greatest of all Colonial era printing accomplishments. One noted oddity about the “Martyrs Mirror” is that that inset leaflet was not liked by many of the Mennonite families and was removed. Those that contain that print remaining, are somewhat rare. The “Martyrs Mirror” shown in the photo is from a private collection and is displayed on a one-piece folding bookstand from the Ephrata Cloister. The two small books pictured are rare, paperback devotionals. The two framed printed broadsides were comm issioned “Flyleaf” broad sides for noted Frak tur artists. They were printed after the death of founder Conrad Beissel. The broadside to the left is a “Haus-Segen” or “House Blessing” printed for and decorated by Heinrich Otto. Union Canal Days Cancelled

The Friends of Union Canal Tunnel Park are sad to announce that they find it necessary to cancel the 31st annual Union Canal Days. In these uncertain times they felt it was necessary for the safety of vendors, volunteers, and patrons to cancel this year’s festivities. Since this fun event is also their largest fundraiser of the year, they hope you will continue to support the park through their weeklynarrated tours, monthly variety markets, and their Civil War weekend in August. Your support makes it possible for the volunteers to make the park a beautiful place everyone can enjoy. Berks History Center Museum & Research Library - A Tale From The Past The Berks History Center Museum & Research Library are currently closed and will remain closed through the end of April to ensure the health and safety of the community. During this time, the Berks History Center staff is working remotely to continue to share stories like this, through their digital platforms and publications like The Shopping News of Lancaster County. The Brethren Community of Pricetown By Richard L.T. Orth As motorists speed by the small village of Pricetown on Route 12, they are hardly aware of the 18th Century Dunkard, or Brethren, community that once thrived there. The few indications of early settlement, such as the surviving rustic barns and log houses built by the original pioneers, are frequently overlooked. Conrad Price, the person for whom this community is named, was among the original twelve Brethren pioneer families who settled here about 1754. The new community was an outgrowth of the Brethren Plain Sect that had earlier settled in the Oley Valley. The quaint, original fieldstone 1777 Brethren meetinghouse, situated on a knoll off the main thoroughfare, survives in pristine shape. Known as “the oldest unaltered

Church of the Brethren in America,” it can be located, by a historical marker, just two blocks east of the village hotel and traffic-light intersection. The historic Meetinghouse lies idle throughout the year, except for the annual congregational gathering held by the Mohrsville Church of the Brethren on the first Sunday in June. The attractive 18th Century Dunkard Preacher’s home, adjacent to the Brethren Meetinghouse, is credited as having been built in 1775 by Martin Gaube, who is buried in the church cemetery alongside it. An early, hand-built balcony above the main entrance may indicate that

the Brethren, like other Colonials, stored grain in their attics. Alternatively, the balcony could be an architectural vestige of a bygone practice that provided a convenient way of moving heavy furniture into the second floor, in lieu of the narrow interior staircase, as was custom in Old World Germany. Entering Pricetown from Fleetwood via Route 662, many motorists drive past an ancient, historic Brethren log barn found on the right hand side of the road, about midway between the two communities. Obscured behind the barn is one of the earlier log houses of this Brethren settlement (1773). This is the first home of

Conrad Price, later given to his eldest son, Jacob. Its original hand-hewn back porch is still intact. A traditional one and a half story log home of the 18th Century, with a Continental Pennsylvania German floor plan, the Price log home survives in excellent shape.

Another colorful period of trade occurred in the late 1800s, when Montana horses were brought into Temple by the railroads and drivers took them up the Pricetown Road to be sold at country auctions such as the Fredericksville Ascension Day auctions held by John Frey and others in the back country. Being one of the most distant civilized outposts from Reading, Pricetown became a successful town, serving needs beyond those of the immediate population. The several Brethren, who were shoemakers and saddleharness tradesmen there, were in a unique position. Together with wheelwrights and blacksmiths, they met the needs of travelers going from the Oley Valley north to the East Penn Valley over the Oley Hills via Pricetown and Fleetwood. The whitewashed log wall of the back porch is a reminder that almost all log homes were whitewashed annually, a Pennsylvania Dutch practice which preserved some of these structures to the present day. Just east of the village tavern along the Pricetown Road, stands another simple one story log house once belonging to the Price family. Built in the late 1770s, it has not been whitewashed for many years. Its rustic logs with repaired cement chinking are barely protected from the severe weather of the Pricetown Ridge, where ice storms are common. In the 1700s, the heavily traveled Pricetown highway was a major route that farmers traversed into Reading for the buying and selling of wares in the thriving market town. Pricetown itself had three taverns with adjacent general stores to serve this

The evening before this column was written, a group of Dutch “Senger,” under the leadership of “Der Weiss Kopp” (Ed Weber) assembled in the living room of the lovely home of Ernest and Marie Shupp around the bend from Peace United Church of Christ, which is situated in the woody setting older folks will recall as Harting’s Grove, for over a hundred years the scene of the Muddy Creek Sunday School Picnic. Ernest and Marie live next door to Stevie Shupp, who we understand is 82, and just loves to make trips to Bowmansville. Since Allen Musser, “Der Deitsch Greemer,” from Bowmansville is one of the “Senger,” perhaps we should ask “Der Deitsch Greemer” to keep his eye on Stevie when he’s in “Baumannswill.” Geht der Stevie widder zu de Meed? Mis wisse, es gebt scheeni datt! We cannot sign off this week without asking Marie whether she caught that “Meisli” yet? (All of you must know that Marie is, as we say, as “clean as a pin” and the very thought of a “Meisli” in her house causes her to reach for her broom!) Though onions are included in many recipes, they often take a back seat, providing added flavor to the main ingredients. However, with their unique flavor and versatility, onions can be the star of a dish, from soups to sides, sauces and more. We asked readers to share their favorite recipes with us. 1015 Casserole

Irene Hurst, Newmanstown onions, cut into chunks, enough to fill a 9”x13” pan 1 tablespoon sugar (optional) 1 can cream of chicken or mushroom soup, undiluted 1 cup shredded cheese, any kind or a mixture ¾ cup crushed potato chips Butter a 9”x13” cake pan. Place onions in dish and sprinkle with sugar (optional). Spread soup over top. Cover with cheese and then potato chips. Bake at 350°F, covered, for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 30 minutes or until soft.

Stuffed Onions

Gloria Dougherty, Akron “For onion lovers” 4 large sweet onions ½ lb. ground beef, cooked and drained ¼ cup soft bread crumbs ¼ cup condensed fiesta nacho cheese soup, undiluted ¼ cup finely chopped green pepper ½ teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper ½ teaspoon beef bouillon granules ¼ cup hot water

Cut tops off onions and peel them. Scoop out centers to within ¼ inch of edge. Set shells aside. Chop the removed onion; set aside ¼ cup in a bowl. (Refrigerate the remaining onion for another use.) Combine the beef, bread crumbs, soup, green pepper, oregano, salt, pepper and ¼ cup chopped onion; mix well. Stuff the onion shells with the mixture. Arrange in a 9” microwave safe pie plate. In a small bowl, dissolve bouillon in water. Pour over onions. Cover and microwave on high for 10 to 15 minutes, turning and basting after 5 minutes. Yield: 4 servings.

Marinated Vidalia Onions Linda Horning, Terre Hill 2 cups water 1 cup apple cider vinegar ½ cup sugar 4 Vidalia onions, peeled and sliced thinly 2 cups mayonnaise celery salt, to taste In a medium bowl, whisk together water, vinegar and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Place onion slices in a 13”x9” dish. Pour the marinade over onions, tossing to coat well. Refrigerate the onions overnight. Drain the onions, reserving the marinade for other purposes. In a medium bowl, mix the onions and mayonnaise. Add celery salt to taste. May be served with saltine crackers, but also good on burgers, hot dogs and steaks.

No Cook Pickles

1 quart milk Fry the chopped bacon and drain off half of the fat. Fry the onions in the other half Debra Keebler, Stevens of the fat until soft. Heat the “Delicious!” quart of milk; when warm, 16 cucumbers (unpeeled, add the two cups diced thinly sliced) potatoes, onions and bacon. 2 cups onions, thinly sliced Heat thoroughly. Serves 4 to 5 people. 3 tablespoons salt Place in large covered bowl, turning occasionally at least three hours. Drain,but do not rinse. Add, but do not heat: 2 cups cider vinegar 3 cups sugar 1 teaspoon celery seed ½ teaspoon alum 1 teaspoon turmeric Mix well. Put in jars in refrigerator.

Potato & Onion Soup

Pat Roth, Ephrata ½ lb. bacon, chopped 8 yellow onions, sliced 2 potatoes, cooked and diced (2 cups)

2 large Bermuda onions 2 tablespoons butter ½ lb. Swiss cheese, sliced 1 can cream of mushroom soup croutons Slice onions and sauté in butter for 20 minutes. Place in baking dish. Chop cheese into pieces and place on top of onions. Pour soup over cheese. Top with croutons. Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes.

Onion Pie

Pat Roth, Ephrata “This is a main dish pie of German origin.” Pastry for 10” pie shell: 1½ cups sifted flour ¾ teaspoon salt 1½ teaspoons caraway seeds ½ cup shortening 2 to 3 tablespoons water Combine flour, salt and caraway seeds. Add the shortening. Mix until the mixture resembles small peas. Stir water in lightly with a fork. Stir until mixture sticks to the fork and follows the fork around the bowl. Turn onto a floured board and roll to 1/8” thick. Fit into a 10” pie pan. Bake in a hot 425°F oven for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Filling: 3 cups peeled onions, thinly sliced 3 tablespoons melted butter or margarine ½ cup milk 1½ cups dairy sour cream 1 teaspoon salt 2 eggs, well beaten 3 tablespoons flour bacon slices Sauté onions in butter until lightly browned. Spoon into the pastry shell. Add milk, 1¼ cup sour cream and salt to the eggs. Blend the flour with the remaining ¼ cup sour cream. Combine with the egg mixture and pour over the onions. Bake in a slow oven (325°F) for 30 minutes or until firm in the center. Garnish with crisp bacon. Serves 8.

Vidalia Onion Casserole

Sweet Onion BBQ Burgers

Jeffrey Fisher, Stevens 2 lbs. ground beef 2½ cups BBQ sauce 2 eggs, lightly beaten 4 teaspoons brown sugar 4 teaspoons onion salt 1 cup dry bread crumbs Onion Topping: 4 tablespoons butter ½ cup honey 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced Sauce: 1 cup BBQ sauce 1 cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon brown sugar In a large bowl, combine the bread crumbs, onion salt, and brown sugar. Add eggs. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Shape into eight patties. Place in a shallow dish; pour BBQ sauce over patties. Cover and refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours. In a small bowl, combine the sauce ingredients; cover and refrigerate until serving. For topping, melt butter in a small skillet. Stir in honey until blended. Add onions; sauté for 15 to 20 minutes or until tender and lightly browned. Remove from heat and keep warm. Drain and discard BBQ sauce from hamburger patties. Grill patties, uncovered, over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes on each side or until juices run clear. Top each with cheese slice; grill until cheese is melted. Serve on buns with sauce and onion topping. Yield: 8

Linda Horning, Terre Hill “Excellent side dish.” ½ cup butter or margarine 3 lbs. Vidalia onions, peeled and sliced thinly 24 saltine crackers (4 oz.), crushed 2 large eggs ½ cup milk salt and pepper to taste 10.75 oz. can cream of mushroom soup 6 oz. Cheddar cheese, grated Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat 13”x9” baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until tender, not brown. Line prepared dish with cracker crumbs. In medium bowl beat eggs. Add milk, salt and pepper. Add soup mix and mix well. Layer the onions over the cracker crumbs. Then layer some of the egg mixture. Continue layering the remaining onions and egg mixture, ending with egg mixture. Sprinkle the grated cheese and additional cracker crumbs over the top. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, or until brown and bubbly.

Onion Slaw Colonial

Debra Keebler, Stevens “Great as a side dish or to top burgers. Many won’t realize they are eating onions!” 5 large white sweet onions, thinly sliced 2¼ cups sugar ¼ teaspoon celery seed 1½ cups cider vinegar 1½ cups water 4 teaspoons salt 1 cup sour cream 3 tablespoons mayo or salad dressing salt and pepper to your taste Place onions in large bowl. In saucepan, combine sugar, vinegar, water and salt. Bring to a boil. Pour over onions. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Drain onions and discard liquid. In a separate bowl, combine sour cream, mayo, celery seed, salt and pepper. Mix well. Add onions and toss to coat. Yield: 4 cups

This piece was printed for and decor ated by Friederich Krebs in 1788. The Cloister Press com pleted many forms of printed broadsides including: birth and baptism records; house blessings; prayer gardens, plus many more. Over the years, many of these broadsides have been found folded up in old family bibles, boxes, and blanket chests. In most cases, the Ephrata Brotherhood Press printed in German. The Bau man family were “House holder” members of the Ephrata Cloister Church. They continued printing into the 1820s. If you are interested in finding more information on the printing establishment at the Ephrata Cloister, please visit the historical sight. Take a tour and enjoy being on the grounds where these historic pieces were printed. More information is avail able online at ephrata cloister.org. settled Pricetown were pacifists (conscientious objectors) and certainly by way of their religion fell into William Penn’s utopian ideal of “brotherly love.” As it pertains to theology, the German Brethren are very similar to their SwissMennonite and Amish cousins; however, they are exclusive in their observances of baptism and “love feasts.” Whereas they are all considered “Ana baptist,” and fled persecution from Europe for their religious beliefs, once the Brethren first accept Christ as their Savior (“an outward show of inward expression”), they are then baptized. The Brethren promote full triune (three times) immersion of the body in water, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Traditionally, baptism was followed by a love feast. Mennonites, on the other hand, become members of the church at marriage. The last active Dunkard member of the Pricetown meeting was Elam Fox, Sr., who operated a nearby farm and cider-press one-half mile south of Pricetown. Fox died in 1973, but was survived by four children, two of whom (Ben and Elam, Jr.) still reside in Ruscombmanor Township and attend branches of the Brethren church. Although Fox and the other Plain men of the Dunkard Community of Pricetown no longer wore their black-brimmed hats in public in the late 1900s, their traditionally conservative 18th Century beliefs continued to be reflected in the religious and social climate of this farming community as late as the turn of the 20th Century. The Brethren, like their Amish and Mennonite cousins, are frugal, successful farmers who seem to have instinctively understood Adam Smith’s principles of capitalism in the operation of their farms and roadside stands, never wasting time or goods for fear of eventual want. Smith (1723-1790), known generally as the “Father of Modern Economics,” took Isaac Newton’s vision of a universe running by itself according to natural laws and applied it to society as a whole and to economic

activity in particular. Anyone who ever met the elder Fox knew that, as a member of the Brethren Sect, he did not engage in frivolous ideas or endeavors. One of Elam Fox’s sons, Elam, Jr., still sells the fruits of his labor, gathered from his family orchard along the Fleetwood-Oley Memorial Highway, as his father did before him. The original Fox homestead, which features a dressed stone farmhouse built in 1782 and designed in the Federal style, bears evidence of the economic boom times of our early agrarian Republic. It is home to Elam, Sr.’s other surviving son, Ben Fox, and Betty Kurtz. One of the most unique practices of the Pricetown congregation is the “liebes mahl” or “Love feast,” which is a part of the Brethren religious worship little understood by the outside world. In doing research for this article, I was able to vividly understand this unique ceremony, as traditionally performed, with the help of Clarence Kulp, Jr., one of the historians of the Brethren Sect in Montgomery County. “Liebesmahl,” more personal than other religious practices engaged in by Plain Sects in Pennsylvania, may, in part, be why this religious order is more fraternal than most. However, all the Plain Sects in Pennsylvania are in themselves unique. Preparations for the weekend Love feast were usually made the week prior to this event. Generally, preparations involved a visit to the local Brethren by pairs

of deacons, who were sent as witnesses to see if the Brethren had walked the right path of the Lord. To plan this most involved and important ceremony, the Church elders held a special council meeting. The preparatory service, which included cooking of all the meals, was mostly done by the Deacons wives. Sleeping accommodations, for distant worshippers, were arranged in nearby barns, attics, and homes. All was felt essential for this two-day period, because visitors from all over the region traveled from Berks, Bucks, Montgomery, Lan caster, and Lebanon Count ies to participate – no matter where the Love feast was held. In recent times, only two Love feasts were held at the Pricetown Meetinghouse, one in 1980 and the other in 1986. This most important ceremony on the Brethren calendar was considered a “great yearly reunion,” where old acquaintances were renewed and new ones formed. In marking the start of the Love Feast on a Saturday, the Bishop announced the beginning of service and,

with the rest of the ministers, entered the Brethren pulpit or, in recent years, the Preacher’s table, while the rest of the congregation took their places at the table. Men and women (or brothers and sisters), sat on their respective sides as they did with meetings and services. Generally, women and children were on the left and men on the right. The first of a threefold service began with foot washing. The congregation filed to special benches for this ritual. Today, the foot washing takes place at the tables. The brother at the end of the first row, wearing an apron made of toweling material, started. He knelt before the next brother, washed his feet in a designated tub, and followed with a greeting of fellowship by the right hand. He then gave the holy kiss of charity lip to lip. The first brother continued on down the line washing several brothers until he retired and another brother picked up the task, until the row was completed. The cleansed brothers filed back to their seats at the “Lord’s table” and another row began, until the whole

congregation had participated. Sisters on the other side observed the same ritual. The next segment of the “liebesmahl” was the imitation of the Lord’s Supper or “nachtmahl,” as portrayed in the Gospels. At this mid-afternoon feast, all members ate together as one, regardless of their stations in life. Prayer, known as “return ing thanks,” was given before the meal and after. The second fold was the rite or ordinance of the holy kiss or kiss of charity. This ritual started with the Bishop to minister and so on through the brotherhood with the right hand of fellowship and the kiss of charity on the lips. The last brother came to the pulpit or preacher’s table to complete or close the chain of fellowship. Then the Bishop greeted the first female of the bench, but with only the hand. The sisters then greeted the other women in the same fashion,

After the holy kiss and before the Holy Communion, the fellowship meal was eaten. The third part of the Love feast was the rite of Holy Communion. The Bishop uncovered the “liebesmahl brote” or communion bread under a white muslin cloth. This holy brote had been pronged with five perforations symbolic of the five fatal wounds of Christ on the cross. The Bishop then asked for God’s blessing of the unleavened bread and had the congregation repeat a holy phrase. The Bishop, with the assistance of the ministry, distributed the bread to the tables. The bread was intentionally cut into long strips so brothers and sisters could break off portions. The ends were usually given

Abounding Love (Part Two) Author: Wenger Scripture: Philippians 1:9 “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ.”

If you remember last week, we discussed the imperative of love. It is the greatest, and yet love is necessarily accompanied by two guard ians, knowledge and discernment. The Beatles wrote that famous song “All You Need Is Love.” Though it’s the greatest, it’s not all you need. Love without knowledge and discernment leads to enablement, inability to deal with issues, and a failure to refute false doctrine which is always just around the corner. The Lord Jesus was full grace and truth. All grace and little truth breeds false doctrine hence they were “carried about with every wind of doctrine.” (Ephesians 4:14). All truth and no grace

leads to legalism. There is a balance. We are commanded to study so that we are a worker that is not ashamed. Knowledge is important. This word knowledge in Greek is, epígnōsis epí, “on, fitting,” which intensifies gnṓsis, “knowledge gained through a first-hand relationship” “it’s experiential knowledge). We must have a thorough knowledge of God’s word to love/labor effectively as a Christian in the world. Love without knowledge is anemic. Psalms 119:66 states, “Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands.” You can and must have a good knowledge of the word. We compare scripture with scripture, line upon line, and precept upon

precept. No one is able to know, love or serve God effectively without reading, studying and applying His word; it just doesn’t happen! This is the calling of every believer. The second guardian of love is discernment. The Greek word is only used here and means to “cut through” hazy ethical (moral) matters to really “size things up.” Real discernment isn’t nat ural and doesn’t come easy. “For if you cry for discern ment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as hidden treasures; then, you will discern righteousness and justice and equity and every good course.” (Proverbs 2:3, 9). you will know how to respond in every situation. Discernment knows what is just, what is right and what is fair. It is best illustrated in Solomon when he was going to split the baby in half. If you don’t know what I am talking about, read 1st Kings 3:1628. How do we get discernment? The book of Hebrews answers this…when we are mature in the word… we know it…understand it and apply it, then and only then, will we have discern ment, the ability to make right choices and determine what is evil, which is so often mixed with good. “But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use having trained their senses to discern good and evil.”

In previous years, when Franconian Brethren would travel to Pricetown from Harleysville to hold their worship services in the ancient 1777 meetinghouse, only a few learned Price town citizens knew why they were present. Worship, then held on a quarterly basis, was done at the Pricetown Meetinghouse in both English and German, continuing until the 1930s. Today, an annual session, held in the English language, upholds the Brethren traditions established at Pricetown when the comm unity was yet a pioneer outpost. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 Disaster Emer gency, Randall Gockley, Borough EMA Coordinator has hosted a weekly telephone conference call with key organizations within the Borough. Held each Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., the call allows all participants to advise their current sit uation and share information. Participants include: Keystone Villa, The Groves, The Retreat, Good Samaritan Shelter, Lincoln Christian Home, Main Spring of Ephrata, Ephrata Area Social Services, Well Span Hos pital, Chamber of Comm erce, and Ephrata Minis terium. Also, Mayor Mowen,

Bob Thompson, Borough Manager, and representatives of law enforcement, fire and EMS services participate. Ephrata Township EMA, Lancaster County EMA and Ephrata Manor are also on the weekly call. According to Gockley, all these organizations share a desire to keep the community safe and to share information and resources. “Everyone has been extremely open with some sharing resources and guidance to others,” Gockley stated. “All these organizations are in this together and want to help each other.” Gockley stated it is important for the citizens of the community to know that these weekly updates are occurring and there is great cooperation going on behind the scenes to keep the Ephrata area safe during the current situation.
