Salmangundi = Salmagundi. Salpeder, m, saltpeter. G. Salpeter. Salpederfeier, n, nitric acid. G Salpeter + Feuer. Sals, n, salt. G Salz. ***
It’s been some time since we have reported on the status of our revision of Lambert’s Pennsylvania Dutch Dictionary, which was published by the Pennsylvania German Society in 1924 - just one year before Bischli and Gnippli were born. During the month of February, we were able to upgrade our CPT “Waddefresser,” so that by the time you read this ECK we will have a hard disk drive attached to our CPT “Waddefresser” and be able to have Lambert’s entire dictionary available for recall at any moment. With a new Disk Sort program, we will be able to alphabetize all of the words on a diskette (hundreds of words) or all of the words on the hard disk (thousands of words).
In this ECK, we are listing the words Lambert gives beginning with the letter S (listed on his page 129). We have capitalized the nouns (Lambert’s sach to our Sach), respelled a few of the words (Lambert’s saee to our saehe; Lambert’s saejezaah to our Saegezaah; saaje to our saage, etc.) and realphabetized the list.
The abbreviations Lambert uses above are: m = masculine (der); G = German; F = feminine (die); n = neuter (es); pp =
past participle; F = French; E = English. The list as it stands above illustrates the very first step we take in our revision of Lambert’s entire dictionary, ca. 200 pages in length. Once we have Lambert’s entire dictionary, 16,438 entries, recorded on our hard disk in the form given above, we will add all the ca. 5,200 Dutch words we published in our 1970 “Abridged Pennsylvania German Dictionary.” Of course, we will alphabetize as we go. That means that when we encounter an unusual word in the dialect we can immediately check to see whether it is in our revised dictionary on our hard disk. In addition, we will be able to add sentences in which the use of these words is illustrated. (Lambert illustrates the use of a few words, but not very many.) Forms which Lambert does not list also need to be added. For instance, the plural of Sack (Seck), the plural of Saddelgaul (Saddelgeil), the plural of Saegblock (Saegbleck), the plural of Saet (?), the plural of Saldaadekapp (?), etc.
We are convinced that there are many, many more than 21,638 (16,438 + 5,200) words in Dutch! IN ADDITION to adding those words Lambert does not give, we need to add sentences which illustrate the use of many verbs (singe, lache, danse, schlofe, etc.) in our MUDDERSPROOCH.

A sling and a stone.
Author: Wenger
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:50 - “So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone.”
This account of David’s victory over Goliath is full of zeal for God and practical lessons for the spiritual life. It’s no wonder God said of David, “He was a man after God’s own heart.” Let’s get right to it. Think of it! The entire army of Israel was facing off with this Giant who taunted Israel and her God. Let’s look at the scripture account.
“Then a champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out from the Philistine camp. He was six cubits and a span in height (9’ 8” tall),
and he had a bronze helmet on his head. He wore a bronze coat of mail weighing five thousand shekels (156 lbs.), and he had armor of bronze on his legs and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels (15 lbs.). In addition, his shield bearer went before him” (1st Samuel 17:4-7).
“And Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and array yourselves for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down against me. If he is able to fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and labor for us.
“Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day! Give me a man to fight!” On hearing the words of the Philistine, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and greatly afraid.” This went on for forty days
the Month, 6:30pm Home of “Grace House Blessings”
morning and evening (1st Samuel 17:8-11).
Ignore sarcasm, false accusations and criticism. David ignored his brother’s sarcasm and false accusations. His brother even presumed to know the motives of David’s heart. Apparently God knew the condition of David’s heart and his motives. Never fear false accusations and verbal assaults. David didn’t return evil for evil, he just ignored his brother’s attempt to belittle him. Let’s look at his brother Eliab’s statement, “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness?
I know your pride and wickedness of heart you have come down to see the battle!” Of course David wanted to see the battle. Why not, it’s good that he did. David was just obeying what his father commanded him. Be bold, be courageous, and ignore the stone throwers. Persecution is part and parcel of discipleship. It’s interesting that this criticism comes from his own family. Don’t think that to be strange.
Christ said, “A profit is not without honor, except in his own home town.” Real discipleship means we have to be prepared to accept being marginalized, criticized and persecuted. “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:1012).
Guard your heart, and keep your motives pure. David’s motive was righteous, no one else made any kind of statement like this, “Just who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” Jesus states that what comes out of our mouth reveals what is in our heart. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:4). David was jealous for his God. We should feel the same when others use the name of the Lord our God in vain. It should bother us. Yes, David did ask what
to make an offer as Saul did. Gifts don’t matter much if you aren’t alive to receive them. The description of Saul and the all of the rest of the army was that they were all afraid, very afraid. Remember, this was going on for 40 days, morning and evening. That was plenty of time for someone to come forward…but no one did, only David.
We will continue our study from “A sling and a stone” next week.

As a retired state police officer, Joe Dipierro knows a thing or two about higher standards. According to him, so does Dr. Impellizzeri. He helped lower Joe's risk of stroke by clearing a carotid artery at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital. "When blood flow to the brain is involved, you go with the best," says Joe. Today, Joe's still enjoying retirement in his signature way — cruising on his motorcycle without fear of a stroke around the bend.

25TH ANNUAL
Mother’sDay
2024
A collection of poems, memories and notes dedicated to our mothers
Message To Mom In Heaven
Dear Mom,
It is only 3 months since you left us to enter the gates of Heaven to be with Dad and I miss you and think of you every passing day! I am still having difficulty processing that you are gone! I have to assimilate this new reality of not being able to celebrate this Mother’s Day with you and it will be hard!
My fondest memories of you are how strong, courageous and brave you have always been and even up until your final moments of life! These memories will always be my keepsake with which I will never part, you will always and forever be in my heart!
Love you, Kathy
Always Loved, Never Forgotten
June Shepley (1925-2020)
Elaine Roschel (1934-2017)
Grandma and Nanny,
I want to let both of you know you are never forgotten. I look at your pictures daily and still miss you both. I miss all the laughs and fun times together. I miss sharing a snack or meal with you. Although you were both very different women,
Thanks For All You Have Done
Best Liver Maker
Phyllis Burkholder
Happy Mother’s Day to our mom in heaven! Although it was a blessing, we all miss you. You were the kindest, sweetest mom, grandma and great grandma. Your family always came first. We were always well fed at your house with ice cream, hot chocolate & toast, egg sandwiches and other food. Your liver & onions, pot pie and macaroni salad were the best. We all know you are cheering on the Phillies, Sixers, Eagles and Flyers. Dad is left to answer all the questions on the game show

channel and you know his buzzer doesn’t work half the time! This is the first Mother’s Day without you and it’s sad. We think about you every day and wish we could hear your laugh and get a hug from you. Hope you have a great Mother’s Day in heaven. We all love you and miss you so much. We will see you when we see you!
Love, April & Merv, Brent & Jean, Chris, Andy & Mindy, Denise & Brian plus all Grandkids and GreatGrandkids
Mom, We’ve had another fun year of making memories together. From seeing the Beach Boys, to playing Bingo, we’ve shared so many smiles and laughs! I’ve enjoyed watching you grow your hobby of quilting and even winning ribbons for your hard work. You make amazing and beautiful quilts! I’m proud that you even donate your time and talents for a good cause as well.
You know that I admire you and how much you are
able to give. I only wish I could give back to you as much as you give to me and my family. You give love, time and a listening ear always! Thank you for your encouraging words to Joselynn with her knitting and crocheting hobby, and for all your time you spend playing and caring for Cameron.
I love you very much! Thank you for being MY mom, and also being a wonderful Grandma/Gram! Happy Mother’s Day! Love Always, Crystle
