Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese As many as 14 local schools participated in a special stadium lighting event to honor graduates and student athletes. Lights were turned on at 20:20 military time, which is 8:20 p.m. and were kept on for 20 minutes. A score of 20-20 represented this years’ class and fourth down and 19 represented COVID19 being on its final down. Parents, family and graduates paraded around the respective campuses, honking horns, waving towels, ringing cowbells and making noise. Shown are two sets of friends who came out to the stadium lighting event at Ephrata High School and they are shown in front of the illuminated scoreboard. Shown in the photo, from left to right, are friends Madeline Eby and Alecia Hurst, and friends Julia Longenecker and Olivia Brendle.

LCBC Community Outreach Supports Local Organizations With Food Drive

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese With challenging times comes a great need and a great opportunity as well to reach out to those who are struggling to get by on a day to day basis. LCBC of Ephrata recently held a community outreach food and gift card drive with four local organizations being the beneficiaries. CrossNet Ministries (ELANCO area), Good Samaritan Services (Ephrata women’s and children’s shelter), REAL Life Community Services (Cocalico area) and Ephrata Area Social Services (E.A.S.S.). Items donated included cereal, fresh produce, canned meats and vegetables, peanut butter and fruit jelly, pancake mix and syrup, pasta and pasta sauce, baby wipes, diapers, hygiene products (disposable razors, deodorant, etc.), paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, etc.), laundry detergent and so much more. Shown in the photo are LCBC volunteers unloading the cars dropping off donations, and three volunteers taking items to the respective charity collection areas inside the church.

Berks History Center Museum - A Tale From The Past The Berks History Center Museum & Research Library are currently closed and will remain closed through the end of April to ensure the health and safety of the community. During this time, the Berks History Center staff is working remotely to continue to share stories like this, through their digital platforms and publications like The Shopping News of Lancaster County. “Claim Your Bucket” The first fire buckets (shown in the photo) used in Berks County were made by the shoe cobblers and were hand-sewn of the besttanned sole leather. In those days, the water supply had to be conveyed by buckets, which the residents were required to keep available in their homes. These were generally hung at the front of the house, so that when an alarm of a fire was sounded and they cried, “throw out your bucket,” the firemen and civilians racing up to the fire could easily pick them up. When the nearest sources of water were located, two lines, or brigades of fire fighters, were formed to hand from one to the other the filled buckets and return the empty ones. Women and children frequently assisted in the line returning the empties. When the fire was extin guished (out), the buckets were loaded onto a cart and carried to a central place and the watchmen on their rounds announced that the

buckets were available for return to their respective owners by the familiar cry, “claim your bucket.” It was not until 1806, when messrs. Sellers and Pennock, of Philadelphia, introduced the leather fire hose held together by rivets of copper wire that hose played an effective part in extinguishing fires. The seams of the hose were double riveted with 22 copper rivets of number eight wire. The hose, when finished, with carrying loops and rings, weighed approx imately 84 pounds for each 50 feet. This type of hose was supposed to withstand pressure of 200 pounds to the square inch. Cowhide was generally employed in the making of hose and after each fire had to be carefully dried and greased to keep it flexible. The grease used was a mixture of beef tallow

and neat’s foot oil, applied warm before the hose was quite dry. Lititz Christian Seniors Go To Guatemala

Written By: Anna Urquhart On Friday, March 6, the senior class of Lititz Christian (LC) School, along with four teachers, departed for the annual LC service trip to Guatemala City. As we lifted off from Newark Airport, we heard rumblings of pandemics and rumors of travel restrictions. Yet, at that point, all reliable sources said Guatemala was a “safe” destination. The students spent the past year preparing for this trip—understanding the Guatemalan culture, practicing their Spanish, raising funds. Time was spent exploring and discussing what it means to serve, and the courage and

humility it often requires. Serving others is rarely “safe.” When we finally arrived, Guatemala was as breathtaking as expected. We spent our first day in Antigua, one of the oldest cities in the Western Hemisphere. Though old, it is very much alive. We visited Azotea coffee plantation, learning how coffee goes from berry to bean to brew. We went to lunch at Ta’cool, where we indulged in the best tacos, well, ever. Finally, we shopped at the local market, bartering for blankets and pottery and other mementos. All day we were aware that this day was a “safe” day—a day of sightseeing and eating and laughing and shopping. We had our translators from Clubhouse Guatemala, the amazing organization we have partnered with for the past five years, leading the way. While we explored this ancient city—the surrounding mountains, HANGING BASKETS GALORE!

the volcano, the colorful buildings, the peddlers at your elbow, the rhythmic music in the square, the smell of coffee and spices in the air—very little was asked of us apart from just keeping up with the group and not tripping on the uneven cobblestones. Things changed after that. The “safety of the sightseer” disappeared. The week that followed was filled with children— elementary aged kids up through teenagers. The leaders from Clubhouse Guatemala tried to prepare us, saying, “They know you are coming, so they will be…excited.” We arrived at the brightblue escuela in Bethania (Zone 7), hearing little voices call from 2nd and 3rd story windows: ¡Gringos aquí! The seniors were nervous, eager. We all waited, sipped water, applied sunblock, and surveyed our surroundings. Then the bell rang for recess. Kids flooded from the front doors of the school, sprinting straight at the seniors. Arms raised to be lifted, carried, spun, given piggyback rides. Hands slapped, playing tag and pato, pato, ganso (duck,

sometimes ten people. When we offered to pray for each family we visited, the families asked primarily for health. We would pray for them. And then they would, in turn, pray for us. Together we prayed to the same God, finding safety in our shared faith and shared humanity. One mother—a single mom of 3 boys—asked that we pray for her elementaryaged sons to continue

After lunch each day, the seniors delivered food packages and water filters. The families we visited attended the local church in Bethania. The church leaders led us throughout the neighborhood and down into the ravine to deliver these food packs. We saw first-hand what economists call “extreme poverty.” Oneroom houses with dirt floors, made of cinderblocks and plywood and corrugated sheet metal. These structures housed five, six, eight,

duck, goose). A cacophony of voices questioned at once: ¿Como te llamas? ¿De donde eres? ¿Por qué estás aquí? ¿Jugarás conmigo? The LC students didn’t hesitate. They dove right in. They laughed. They danced. They sang. They painted fingernails. They played soccer. They pushed swings. They climbed. They colored. They raced. They jumped rope. They bounced balls. They played hide-and-seek. Each morning, the seniors led a bible study, with music and games, in the schoolyard; each afternoon they met the kids again at the neighborhood playground—a playground littered with debris, dirt, broken bottles, used needles, dirty diapers, and abandoned food wrappers. There was little safety in this playground, but the children were so trusting. So (very) energetic. So exuberant. It was beautiful to watch, and yet difficult. We knew these children were hungry. Lice-riddled. Some sickly. Many living amidst abuse and fear. All in poverty. We knew this because we visited some of their homes.

3 tablespoons chili sauce 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce ¼ teaspoon dried basil In a bowl, combine the first eight ingredients; mix well. Shape into four to six oval patties. Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons paprika ½ teaspoon garlic powder 2 teaspoons prepared pesto 1 lb. lean ground turkey 4 slices provolone cheese, regular or reduced fat Combine the first nine burger ingredients. Add the turkey and mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape into four 1 /2” patties. Place the burgers on an oiled grill rack over medium heat. Grill the burgers, covered, for 4 to 6 minutes per side. Thermometer should read 165°F. Top with the cheese slices and grill, covered, until the cheese is melted, about 1 to 2 minutes.

Lititz Christian Seniors Go To Guatemala (Continued From Page 6A)

attending school. (She did not want them to join a gang, which is what so many young boys get trapped into doing. An education is lifechanging in Guatemala, but can be difficult to achieve.) We looked at her sons and asked them what they dream of becoming. Un bombero, the youngest replied. A fireman. The oldest son said, Un empresario. A businessman. The middle son could not decide, as he had too many dreams to name, but he did make sure to tell us that he loves math. Their mother glowed with pride. Wedged into a tiny house in the ravine, that sweet family reminded us that we all dream of what could be. We all dream of a kind, beautiful, hopeful world. As the week neared its end, the pressing news of COVID-19 and quarantines and borders closing loomed large. We evaluated whether to leave early; but with no available flights, we stayed until our scheduled departure on Saturday, March 14. We flew out of Guatemala City that Saturday. Twentyfour hours later, Guatemala closed its borders. The Lititz Christian senior class returned to the United States and a world that seemed almost unrecognizable from the week before. We stood in

customs in Newark Airport amidst a sea of people— some wearing masks, some wearing gloves, many looking fearful. Upon reaching the LC campus that night, the students first greeted their families, then unloaded textbooks from their lockers—some dumping them straight into their luggage. Then we all went home, and stayed home, waiting to see what the future would hold. We are still waiting. And still dreaming of a kind, beautiful, hopeful world. So much of our lives— especially now—is spent trying to stay safe. (Indeed, safety is important.) Yet, let us also learn from the Lititz Christian senior class. In these uncertain times, rather than sightsee, may we all have the courage to serve. We are so proud of you, Lititz Christian Class of 2020—the world is already more kind, more beautiful, and more hopeful because of you.

He came back one Saturday with his Dad and his Mom and stayed just for a day. That which Jim wanted to see first was his beloved little yellow chick. “Let’s go quickly,” he said to David, and they ran over to the chicken house. The chicken house was full of large brown chickens. There were many chickens, but there was no tiny yellow chick. Jim was amazed. “Oh!” he said, “where has the Tiny Chick gone?” “Your Tiny Chick is a chicken now,” said David to him. “Now I don’t know my own Tiny Chick from all the others,” said Jim. “Can you show me which one is Tiny Chick?” “Call her,” said David, “perhaps she will know you when you call her.” “Come, chick! Come, chick!” Jim called. Just then a chicken jumped up from her nest. “Cluck, cluck, cluck,” said the chicken. “Oh, I believe that she knows me,” said Jim. “I believe that that’s my own Tiny Chick.” Just then Jim sees an egg in the nest where the chicken had been. “Perhaps she gave me an egg,” Jim said, “because she is glad to see me. So I want to feed her.” And Jim gives her

some oats. It would have been hard to find a boy happier than Jim. *** Last week and this week we have borrowed a fresh dialect story from the August, 1982 issue of Der Deutsche Brief, which is published monthly by the editor, Benjamin K. Beiler, 431 Gridley Road, Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17602. We thank Benny Beiler, the author of Der Jim Sei Glee Biebli for permission to do so. Der Jim Sei Glee Biebli was written in the dialect especially for children. Benny Beiler is a teacher with more than a decade of experience in Old Order parochial schools, so he is well acquainted with Old Order children and their interests. Ashley Parry is a Junior at Garden Spot. Over her high school career, she has found that she favors the relationships she made with her friends and her teachers. She is a reputably skillful swimmer and attends youth group at New Holland Church of the Nazarene where she is a student leader. As a swimmer, she won high school leagues, which she claims as her greatest accomplishment so far. Additionally, she is a part of the National Honor Society (NHS) and a student leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) program. She also works at the YMCA. When asked what she does, she grinned and explained, “I help coach the little kids. Not only does she coach the young swimmers, but also is a part-time lifeguard and water safety instructor. She hopes to attend Olivet Nazarene University, saying “I haven’t fully decided, but that’s my top. She wants to study Chemistry, and though she is not certain of the career path she wants to take, she would like to become either a forensic chemist, toxicologist, or simply a chemist. Not surprisingly, her favorite class is Chemistry because she finds it to be intriguing. In her free time, Ashley enjoys watching television, working out, and socializing. Her hobbies include swimming, biking, and “Oh, sometimes I bake. She wishes students would put down their phones because the amount of time they spend on them is “crazy. She admires her mother, saying that she is the person she most wants to be like when she is older. Ashley explains that her Mom’s strength in her faith, her personality, and her ability to differentiate right from wrong are all qualities she wishes to obtain. “She kind of does everything perfect. She’s always there . . . and she’s a mom. Written by: Skylar Rizzo

Show your support to the 2020 Class of Ephrata High School. Since the traditional graduation ceremony and end of the year activities that many students look forward to as a senior had to be canceled during the pandemic, they are trying to help the seniors realize that everyone acknowledges the hard work that they have done and want to help them celebrate. Therefore, the Ephrata Adopt A Senior program was started on Facebook and it encourages parents, family members or the student themselves to create a post to be shared online. From there, a community member can adopt the senior and send or deliver small gifts to show support. THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

The Hour of Power by Pastor Ricky Kurth After the Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead, and just before He ascended into heaven, He made a promise to His apostles, saying, “…ye shall receive

power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). The power of which the Lord spoke was the power they received when they were filled with the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:4). At Pentecost, the disciples like Peter and Stephen were filled with the Spirit and given the “power” to do “great wonders and miracles” (Acts 2:43; 6:5,8). Earlier the Lord had told them to “tarry” in Jerusalem until they were endued with that “power from on high” (Luke 24:49). Of course, the reason the Lord gave them the power to do mighty works was

to confirm the WORDS they were preaching. After receiving that power, we read, “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following” (Mark 16:20). Now here we have a dispensational difference. God hasn’t promised you that kind of power. You can tarry in Jerusalem all you want, and you will not be endued with power like that from on high. I know that churches often hold what they call “tarrying meetings,” where they get together to wait for the

Spirit to come upon them in that miraculous manner. But no one today receives that kind of power from the Spirit, simply because the Father didn’t promise it to us members of the Body of Christ, living in the dispensation of grace. If you want to confirm the power of God’s Word today, you have to do it by demonstrating God’s power in your personal life. When you display God’s patience in the midst of your difficult circumstances, you exhibit the power of God in a mighty way! And when difficult people tax your patience, you can display the power of God

mightily by exhibiting His longsuffering. You can also show the power of God’s holiness when you are tempted to sin and you resist the temptation steadfastly. If you want to talk about demonstrating the power of God, that’s how it’s done in this dispensation. We still live in the hour of power, but the nature of God’s power is different than it was at Pentecost. But the filling of the Spirit didn’t just give the disciples the power to work miracles. It gave them another kind of power, the kind the Spirit gave the prophet Micah in ancient Israel: “But truly I am full

of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin” (Micah 3:8). Do you have any idea how much power it took to stand in front of a bunch of unsaved Jews, who thought they were the favored people of God just because they were born of the seed of Abraham, and tell them how sinful they are? Micah knew! And so did men like Stephen, who bravely charged the Jews with the death of the prophets (Acts 7:51,52), and the twelve apostles, who charged

Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, May 27, 2020 - 15A

the people of Israel with the death of Christ, and threatened them with His resurrection. Their message at Pentecost said, as it were, “You killed Him, but He rose from the dead, and now He’s angry with you, so you’d better repent!” (Acts 2:2236). But here we have yet another dispensational difference. It’s not up to us to show the nation of Israel her sins, or any other nation for that matter—including the nation in which we live! Though you wouldn’t know it from the way most of Christianity conducts itself, by going around pointing out how sinful our nation is. All that does is make unsaved people hate Christianity, and turn a deaf ear to the gospel we proclaim. Our job is rather to remind individuals of their own personal sins. All that does is help people see their need of a Savior! Once they get saved and learn to accept the Bible as God’s Word, then they are willing to accept what God says in His Word about things like abortion and homosexuality. Remember, God has called us to be fishers of men, not clean up the pond! That means if you want to fix what’s wrong with our nation, don’t become a political activist. Become an evangelist and change the nation by changing the hearts of men, one precious soul at a time.

Memorial Day Remembers Those Who Deserve Respect And Gratitude

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese This past Monday, May 25, Americans across the country remembered and paid their respects to the brave men and women who gave their lives for our country. This year, parades and services were cancelled due to COVID-19, but Americans all across our great nation still took time from their day to remember or visit a gravesite of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to insure our freedom. Shown in the photo is a flag proudly waving in the wind behind the Winters Memorial (located on Railroad Avenue, Ephrata, along the Ephrata to Lititz Rail Trail) and flags placed on Veterans graves in a cemetery near Stevens.

Frakturs Of The Pennsylvania Heartland

Mulcahy Earns PMEA Spot

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Again this week, Shopping News readers will learn about a very important part of our heritage here in Central Pennsylvania. This is the second part of a twoweek series on Frakturs of the Pennsylvania Heartland. Last week’s article described what Frakturs are, who created them, the various types of Frakturs and fascinating information about a very special Fraktur picture of parrots done in our local area. If you wish to read the first part of this

series, it can be found on page B1 in the Wednesday, May 20 issue of The Shopping News, online at snews.com or on The Shopping News Facebook page. This week, local auctioneer Tom Horst (shown in photo) of Horst Auctioneers, will focus on two beautiful Frakturs (shown in the photos) by notable artists from our area. Each of these two Frakturs contain scrivener work with a family/ genealogical connection to local families. The first Fraktur (left

photo) is a small “Vorschrifft” type birth record for Samuel Eby of Leacock Township, Lancaster County. The term “Vorschrifft” translated into English means “Forewriting” or “Statement of Faith.” Done in German script, it contains the birth record of Samuel Eby who was born on June 29, 1787. The artist of this Fraktur almost always used a bright colored vase or pitcher with flowers, which is the “telltale” or defining trait for the artist. At first, this artist was referred to as “The Lancaster County Vase Artist,”

but that has been altered to the “Leacock Township” artist because his works were found in Leacock Township or having been done for Leacock Township families. Even though the Fraktur is (Continued On Page 2B)

framed in a late-era frame, it is done on laid paper. Featuring an ink outlined red border, the illustrated heading shows an em bellished “S” and tulips vine. The first two lines of writing have broad Fraktur “broken lettering” that identifies the owner. It has a small line in ink and then a secondary heading of ink outlined red. The quick translation of the script is

“Samuel Eby am I, in Heaven is me Fatherland (or home), in Leacock Township Lancaster County in State of Pennsylvania, in year of our Lord 1787 the 29th June I am born.” It then continues with a poetic statement of faith. The artist had excellent scrivener work and wonderfully illustrated his Frakturs with bright flowers. The noted thing with this Fraktur is the use of blue watercolor in the paints. The footed pitcher is decorated in a yellow and red banding that is bound in green band and handle. The tall tulip stem has multiple blooms in various stages of blooming.

He also included a floral vine heading and footing to the text. The reverse side of the Fraktur has later written history of the owner. “Samuel Eby (b. 1787-d. Jan 13, 1844) age 56 years.” Additionally, his wife’s name is also included, “Elizabeth Neff, born March 17, 1789, in the sign of Sagittarius.” This helps to link us to Samuel’s genealogy and family record. After some research, it is found that Samuel was the son of Samuel Eby (b. 1754, in Leacock Township) and Elizabeth (Graybill) Eby (b. 1760). He and his wife

THE

Elizabeth (Neff) Eby (born in East Lampeter Township) had three children: Henry Eby (1812-1887); Elizabeth (Eby) Hartman (1815-1895); and Mary (Eby) Leid (18221853). Samuel Eby and his wife Elizabeth are buried in Monterey Chapel (Eby) Cemetery. Wording on Frakturs can lay the foundation for learning so much about a family’s heritage. Through the dedicated work of Russell, Corinne and Patricia Earnest, as well as others working in the field of identifying Fraktur artists, this artist’s works are well documented, even if the artist himself is not named.

There are 17 known works by this particular artist dating from 1789-1800. All are recorded as being from Leacock or Lampeter Town ship in Lancaster County. It is believed that the artist primarily worked for Mennonite families of that region and is noted as being an expert in his scrivener work, highlighted by his highly-detailed work. The occupation of the artist is unknown. The second Fraktur (right photo) was done by Samuel Bentz (1792-1850), a schoolmaster at Wood Corner School, near Weid mansville area (west of Ephrata). His name became known only recently through the discovery of the only known signed work by the artist. Originally called “The Mt. Pleasant” artist, he was believed to have worked in Northern Lancaster County near New Ephrata (present day Lincoln). Most of the recorded forms by the artist were for families living in Ephrata Township, Warwick Township, Elizabeth Town ship and Cocalico Township. Bentz, like many other Fraktur artists, used in his illustrations many similar forms and colors of paint, which makes his works, most of the time, fairly easy to identify. This Fraktur shows his “tell-tale” spiral

The clock is thought to be a symbolic look at a life span or childbirth time. Through extensive research on the life of the artist and his family history, it has been revealed why he may have used this clock in his works. He was the son of Peter Bentz a farmer, builder and Lutheran lay minister who was assigned to several parishes throughout Lan caster County, Dauphin County and a small roll in a congregation in Berks County. The family even tually settled on a farm near Ephrata. Unfortunately, the artist’s father struggled with depression, and in 1818, took his own life. It is recorded that Samuel never married and became a teacher at the school near their family farm. The studies by noted experts have identified over 175 Fraktur known to be created by Bentz. which language the record was to be written in. Bentz is believed to have created Fraktur artwork from 18201837. Russ Earnest, an expert in the field of studying scrivener-work, has found evidence that Bentz con tinued writing documents for families on printed certificates. He also con tinued teaching at the same schoolhouse until his death in 1850. Bentz probably supplemented his meager school teaching salary with doing Fraktur works for neighbors in his area. Bentz’s Fraktur is created in German script and it translates to: “Elizabeth Boffemeyer, daughter of William Boffemeyer and his housewife Anna, born Mellinger. She was born 16th day of September the Year of our Lord 1830.â€?. The work includes all the noted From Minor Tune-Ups to Major Repairs!

characters of Bentz forms including “cross-over diamonds “clock on stand and “spheres on stand. This Fraktur is a fine family record for the Buffemeyer/ Buffenmeyer family. Elizabeth N. (Buffemeyer) Eberly (1830-1906) lived in Clay Township and is buried at Mellinger’s Cemetery in Schoeneck. She wed Joel Eberly (1831-1889) and many of her ten children remained in the Clay Township area. The evidence of these family records lends to why these Frakturs are an important part of our Heritage of the Pennsylvania Heartland. They give a wonderful glimpse into our family histories and the importance of faith and church life to the families for which they were created. For example, the “Geburts und Tauf-Schein or “Birth &

Baptism records show how important it was to them to record their pride of religious freedom for the Anabaptist belief. They proudly stated their faith in the “Vorschrifft records that almost always pronounced for all to see their own confirmation of faith. The Bookplates in Bibles or other treasured books, often times contain a small warning to anyone that would take it from the owner. The warning might be translated to something like: “This book belongs to me (owner’s name). If you take it you are a thief. God will still love you, but you are still a thief. The small school favors or “Reward of Merits often contains words of guidance to students to follow the path of faith, over the path of the world. The ciphering/copy book records were illustrated

to show the pride and diligence of their schooling. Each type of Fraktur work gives an insight into The Pennsylvania German, English and Welsh-Irish cultures that helped to establish this region. The people of Lancaster County and Central Pennsylvania, since it’s founding, have always been proud of their heritage, strong in their faith, and exhibiting hard work to

forge out a future. Many of these Frakturs have been collected by or given to reputable museums and/or libraries for their preservation. Many of these institutions have or are in the process of digitizing these Frakturs and are placing them on the Internet for viewing, free of charge, by the general population. This means you don’t require hours of travel to, or
