This program offers different stations around the historic site, each stop offering a 10- to 15-minute look at things such as lighting, clothing, and writing in the 1700s. Students were free to travel in small groups to various areas of interest. A visit to the bakery showed that bread did not always come in plastic wrappers and the carpenter explained that not all roof shingles are made the same. A visit to doctor made you glad for modern medicine and a visit to the schoolhouse taught the students how to write on stone!

FREMME SCHPROOCHE
By Alice Ziemer Brice Adamsschteddel, PA
Ya, es hot viele Sadde Mensche
Un die Welt is sehr gross. Sie hen all annri Gedanke, Sie hen ken gleichi Schprooch.
Mir Deitsche saage yuscht: “Wie geht’s?” In Englische: “How are you?” “Como esta?” in Schpaanisch meent Es seem Ding, glaabscht net du?
In Deitschland saage sie gewiss Viel Wadde fer’s seem Ding. Es is “Wie befinden Sie sich?” Die Meening is datt drin.
In Nederlandsch datt saage sie “Hoe goot het?” un sin froh, Wammer en blessierlich Antwatt gebt
Die Yunge sin gewiss aa gleich, Sie schparke doch all’s seem. En Boss is es seem zu alle Leit, Gedrauss wie aa daheem.
Die Deitsche hen: “Ich liebe dich,” “Te amo” aa in Schpaanisch. In unserm Deitsch is: “Ich lieb dich,” “I love you” in English.
Yes, there are many kinds of people And the world is very large. They all have other thoughts, None of their languages are alike.
We Dutch say: “Wie geht’s?”
In English: “How are you?” “Como esta?” in Spanish means The same thing, don’t you think?
In Germany they surely use Many words for the same thing. It is “How are you?”
The meaning is in it.
In Holland Dutch they say “Hoe goot het?” and are pleased,
If one gives a pleasant answer, And says exactly the same way.
The young fellows are surely alike, They court all the same way.
A kiss is the same to everyone, Away from home and at home.
The Germans say: “Ich liebe dich,” “Te amo” also in Spanish. In our Dutch is: “Ich lieb dich,” “I love you” in English.
In Holland Dutch it takes three words, “Ik cemin je” and then They act just like everyone, It was always this way.
Feelings are the same in all lands, The language makes no difference. Often when one understands these folks. Words are not needed.

This week, we present the fourth act in our Alice Ziemer Brice Festival. FREMME SCHPROOCHE is again a reflection of Alice Ziemer’s travels in foreign lands. But since she already knew two languages (English and Dutch) and must have studied Spanish in college, she was quite open-minded about other languages and cultures. With her openness to other cultures and languages, Alice Ziemer must have been greatly enriched by her travels abroad.
During our earlier telephone conversation with Catherine Morrow, Alice’s niece, we learned that Alice had cooperated with the late Dr. Alfred Shoemaker during the years he was active as our leading Pennsylvania Dutch folklorist. With this in mind, we turned to the 25 YEAR INDEX TO PENNSYLVANIA FOLKLIFE. We were directed to “Folk Medicine,” collected by Alice Ziemer, Adamstown, which was printed on page 3 of Volume V, No. 14 of THE PENNSYLVANIA DUTCHMAN, published on March 15, 1954. We reproduce this short article here: The home remedies and beliefs that appear in this collection were current in the 19th century in SE Pennsylvania.

Move over God; now there are two of us.
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Job 40:8“Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified.”
We concluded our study last week with the question; how do we as believers annul God’s judgment or condemn Him to justify ourselves? Webster defines annul this way; “To declare or make legally invalid or void.” When we attempt to annul God’s judgment, we are declaring that we know better. Our course of action would be different, therefore God’s course of action should be different. God just isn’t getting it. I am going to void God’s plan or
make it invalid so I can institute my plan; which is obviously better. When we condemn God, we are going a step further in that we are saying His motives are wrong as well. Webster defines condemn as, “To express complete disapproval of.” So, in essence, we are now saying not only do we have a better plan, but even that we completely disapprove of God Himself. We are calling into question God’s motives. Job alludes to this when he infers that God gets pleasure out of oppressing him and actually embracing evil. Job 10:3“Does it please You to oppress me, to reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked?”
God is sovereign, period. He is allowed to be, He deserves it. Sovereign means; God possesses supreme power and permanent authority. We need to embrace God’s sovereignty, not fight it or disapprove of it. His sovereignty is not divorced from His omniscience. He knows how the story ends
and has planned accordingly for His own glory and our good. Both are attainable in His plan. We often think God’s sovereign plan gets in our way. After all, who does He think He is?
One of the ways I say, “Move over God; now there are two of us,” is in the political realm. I get mad, ask why and can’t understand how He allows what He does in our country. The Bible clearly teaches that He sets up one leader and removes others. God removed Nebuchadnezzar as King for his pride and arrogance. God also declares that He ordains leaders and He is still in charge, no matter who is in charge on the earth. Daniel says, “In order that the living may know that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and He grants it to whomever He wishes and sets over it the lowliest of people” (Daniel 4:17).
Remember Joseph and the horrible treatment he received from his brothers? Their intention was to murder him, but Reuben
convinced them to do otherwise in hopes of sparing his life. After being sold as a slave, years in prison and being falsely accused , he eventually became second in command in Egypt. He saved the nation from famine and also saved his entire family. God was allowing all of it for His divine purpose, which seemed anything but good in those early years. Joseph comments about his suffering and all the circumstances he couldn’t change in one statement: “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive ” (Genesis 50:20).
Sometimes we need to refocus, calm our mind and soul with the rest that only comes from the truth that God is sovereign , He has a plan and we can trust Him, even when we can’t trace Him.
Next week, we will continue with our topic, “move over God; now there are two of us.”

baby during the first year of its life of it will become “longfingered” (a thief). When a woman is pregnant, she should not be frightened or crawl under a fence, for the child might be birthmarked.
REMEDIES
Convulsions in babies. Place coarse salt in baby’s hand, sliced bacon on its feet and a Bible under its head. - Epilepsy in children. Cut a hunk of hair off the child’s head and bore a hole in an oak tree. Put hair in the hole and put plug back in the tree. As the tree grows, the epilepsy will pass away. - Warts. Cut an onion in four parts, rub it on the wart. Put the parts together and bury them in the ground. As the onion rots, the wart will disappear. - Bleeding. Take cobwebs taken from a barn and place them on the wound; this will stop the bleeding. - Wounds. Place cow manure or a plug of tobacco on a wound. - Sore eyes in infant. The mother squirted milk from her breasts into the infant’s eyes to wash them. - Bellyache. Drink water in which either chicken or horse manure was soaked. This may have helped, for the manure may contain ammonia and this would relieve gas. - Chronic indigestion. Take the linings from the stomach of chickens, dry them at low heat, grind them and eat them on bread after each meal. The chicken stomach linings may have contained pepsin, depending on the temperature of drying, and that may have relieved the indigestion.

The Best Papa Out There!
Happy Father’s Day, Victor, our favorite person and the best papa out there!! You bring so much happiness, love and laughter to our house every single day. Calum and Teagan are so fortunate to have a papa who is always down to be silly, wrestle, cook, play outside, sing, dance or give a hand to hold.
You are helping to shape their sweet little personalities. I am so lucky to get to watch how they become like you. They look up to you so intently.
You work so hard and do it all for them. I can only hope they grow to have your passion and determination. Your love for them is deep and they reciprocate it so fiercely. There is nothing more pure than their big hugs, kisses and looks of
absolute love for you.
Not only are you an outstanding father, but the best partner I could ask for.
You were meant to be their papa. It’s a gift to have watched the past three years of you being a father and
Father’s Day!
Thank You For Leading By Example
Dear Father,
You set the bar for what hard work accomplishes in life. Your life is a shining example that defines love, respect, loyalty, and dedication for our family. Thank you for leading by example. You have forged a legacy for us to follow. You have loved our mother for over three decades, it’s significant, and conveyed to us a profound life you have mastered.
Thank you for all you do, all that you have provided for us, how you have protected us, how you have guarded us, we are forever, grateful, and in your debt.
Walk A Little Slower Daddy
“Walk a Little slower, Daddy.” said a little child so small.
I’m following in your footsteps and I don’t want to fall.
Sometimes your steps are very fast, sometimes they’re hard to see;
So walk a little slower Daddy, for you are leading me.
Someday when I’m all grown up, You’re what I want to be.
Then I will have a little child who’ll want to follow me.
And I would want to lead just right, and know that I was true; So, walk a little slower, Daddy, for I must follow you!!

I
To My Dad, Dave
You embody an abundance of kindness and love. It pours off your presence alone. It’s what I admire most about you and aspire to reflect in my own life. You’ve taught me to push my potential and that I can learn and teach myself to do anything. Your unwavering support and love has given me the confidence to make all my major life decisions. It has brought me so much joy to watch you become pappy to the kids. The excitement in their voices and their eyes lighting up whenever they hear your name or see you is heartwarming. I’m so thankful that you are a regular part of their lives. I look forward to seeing parts of you become parts of them. The father that you are to me has absolutely made me a better mama and person overall. I don’t know where I’d be without you. Have a wonderful Father’s Day. I love you more than you’ll ever know!
Such An Amazing Father
Happy Father’s Day, Gustavo! You are such an amazing father to our boys, and I thank you so much for that. You are so loved and appreciated in our home. You have been working so hard to provide for our family. This past year has been a little crazy, but you still kept your faith in the Lord, and that has been the
best example to our family. That right there is my favorite thing about you! That is what makes you such a wonderful father. Even through the tough times, you show them how important it is to love another, pray, and keep the faith. Thank you for all you do for us. We love you so much!
Dad,
Happy Father’s Day Dad!
What a fun year we had again together. From picnics and car shows, to New York City, we’ve built many new and fun memories!
I hope you have enjoyed all these times together as much as I have!
Thank you for always listening when I call. Thank
you for all your advice when I ask you many questions. Thank you for your support when times are tough. Thank you for the food you make and the meals you treat me and my family to. Thank you for keeping things light and making jokes!
I love you Dad!
Love Always, Crystle
you left us to enter the gates of Heaven…it seems like yesterday!
I know, Dad, that you were overjoyed when Mom walked though those gates of Heaven four months ago
to meet you. I know you missed her so! I think of you and miss you everyday Dad, but I am so happy that you have Mom with you again! I will always cherish your memory in my heart!
Love you, Kathy

On June 22, Tonya’s heart was in the right place.
Like a lot of busy moms, Tonya tends to put herself last. But when her symptoms kept getting worse, her friends encouraged her to go to WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital. "One second I thought I was just getting older, the next moment I'm having triple bypass surgery," says Tonya. But Tonya's heart truly was in the right place. Her surgeon, Dr. LeBoutillier, is renowned for the exact open-heart technique that Tonya needed. Today, Tonya's heart is strong and still in the right place — enjoying the little moments with her family.

Esther M. Weaver
Esther M. Weaver, 89, passed into eternal rest on Monday, May 27, 2024, at Landis Homes in Lititz, PA.
Born January 22, 1935, in Murrell, PA, Esther was the daughter of the late Daniel and Lizzie (Martin) Weaver.
The work ethic and skills Esther learned through the family farm and market business served her well in her educational pursuits and future career as a nurse. Though her childhood schooling culminated in 9th grade at Lancaster Mennonite High School, Esther went on to earn her GED in 1958. She graduated from The Reading Hospital School of Nursing in 1962 and completed a BS in Nursing degree at Eastern Mennonite College in 1964. In 1976, Esther earned a MS in Nursing degree from Vanderbilt University, a remarkable accomplishment for a Mennonite farm girl of her era.
Esther practiced nursing in varied assignments and locations, from a volunteer term with Mennonite Central Committee-Appalachia, McDowell, KY to being supervisor of nursing at LaJunta Hospital in Colorado. When Esther returned to the
Esther is survived by three sisters: Naomi Weaver, Anna Mae Weaver, Martha (Weaver) Hoover, all residing at Landis Homes; a multitude of nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.

Ephrata area to care for her mother in 1984, she embarked on her final career chapter as an instructor of nursing at Reading Area Community College.
Esther was a member of Akron Mennonite Church. She both volunteered with and generously supported numerous Mennonite and other Christian mission/ service organizations and non-profits. Esther enjoyed travel abroad, including trips to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and others. In retirement, she crisscrossed the U.S. in a small RV with her sister, Anna Mae, visiting friends and family while enjoying the unique wonders of many states.

In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by four siblings, Martin Weaver, Ruth (Weaver) Landis, Henry Weaver, and Elizabeth (Weaver) Martin. Esther’s family would like to thank the staff of Cedar House at Landis Homes for their compassionate caregiving over the past year and a half. We are also grateful for the supportive services of Grane Hospice during Esther’s final month of life.

Success for LAMS archery continued at this year’s PA State 3D tournament when Gavin Shenk (10th grade, shown on the right) won an award for his fourth place finish in the Boys High School Division. Gavin shot a 279/300. This is Gavin’s first season with the LAMS archery team, which led to him representing LAMS in the 2024 Eastern National Archery tournament. During the tournament, Gavin shot a 271/300 in the National 3D
Tournament placing him 367 out of 1,225 HS Boys. When asked what their favorite part about competing with LAMS archery, Kaylee expressed she enjoys having, “… to concentrate on each shot and each shot can be different.” Gavin shared, “Seeing how the scores have improved and I have grown…”, is his favorite part about participating in competitive archery at Lititz Area Mennonite School. East Cocalico Lions Hold Educators Appreciation Night
The East Cocalico Lions Club is Proud to “Serve” the youth of their community.
Two ways they do this is by recognizing “Students of the Month” and providing Scholarships to three Seniors each year. They also recognize all the fine work provided by Cocalico School District educators, who also “Serve” these youth.
The club recently showed their gratitude to these educators by inviting all the educators in the School District to the club’s Second Annual Educators’ Appreciation Night. Everyone gathered at Rural City in Reamstown and were treated to Hors d’oeuvres, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages. The educators were able to relax and have fun while sharing stories with the Lion members and each other.
Shown in the photo are just a few of those in attendance and having a good time.
The members of the East Cocalico Lions Club appreciate all that the educators of the Cocalico School District do and thank them for the “Service” they do for the youth of the community. Sponsoring this
Annual Educators Appreciation Night is just one of many ways that the East Cocalico Lions “Strengthen the Pride” as they as they continue to “Light the Way” in their community and continue to make a difference
like no other service organization in the world.
If you are interested in finding out more about the East Cocalico Lions or would like to join, please call 717-336-5311 or visit www.eastcocalicolions.org. 9 9 9
