Scripture: Colossians 3:23, 24 - “Whatever you do… do it heartily, as to the Lord not man. Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of inheritance for you serve the Lord Christ.”

Our conduct: We are instructed that in whatever (anything and everything) we do, to do it heartily (with your whole being). This verse brings new meaning to some of the daily mundane tasks we do. Why? Because everything we do can be of eternal value, bringing glory to the Lord. It’s the everyday grind that seems so ordinary, but if we do all things for the Lord, our new motivation changes the task to an act of worship. Life in Christ was never meant to be a Sunday occurrence only. New life in Christ should affect every

waking moment of our life… whatever we do… it’s NOT just about Sunday. Our life shouldn’t be spiritual on Sunday and secular through the week. Every task can be an opportunity to worship if our motivation is as Colossians 3:17 states: “whatever you do… do all in the name of the Lord giving thanks to the God through Him.” How we perform is important… heartily is a command not a suggestion. In 2nd Timothy Chapter 2, Paul gives us examples of the good soldier who doesn’t entangle himself in the affairs of the world, the athlete who exercises great discipline, and the hard working farmer. Whatever you do… do it heartily… extraordinarily, totally, completely, thoroughly, wholeheartedly, fully, with all of your soul and might. There is no place in our Christian life for slothfulness, laziness, idleness or apathy. Scripture says be zealous. Proverbs 10:4: “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” Excellence is the standard and we are to pursue it in

the everyday tasks, as well as the prominent endeavors. Excellence in our activities begins with excellence in our minds. Paul reminds us of this in Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything is worthy of praise, dwell (think/meditate) on these things.” We are to pursue excellence in all that we do. Daniel was an example we can turn to: Daniel 6:3 - “Then this Daniel began distinguishing himself among the commissioners and satraps because he possessed an extraordinary spirit (excellence) and the king planned to appoint him over the entire kingdom.”

I have personally committed Colossians 3:23, 24 to memory as a motivation to do all things enthusiastically and with excellence as the goal. At times if I don’t want to complete a task or view it as unimportant, I can put a slack hand to the job. Actually, it goes deeper than that. If I just

don’t feel like doing it, I can turn into a sloth. The author must confess, when asked for help from my dear wife frequently, I am (was) but no more… slack, grumpy, mumbling, wanted to quit before the task was complete and displayed a host of other bad attitudes. How we act at home, that’s how we really are. This is the proving ground for character. The way we treat our husband, wives and children, that’s the real you, not what we would like to project to the watching world.

When I memorized this verse, I realized how negligent I was. That’s the “mirror of the word” of God. In James 1:23-25 it states that the one who looks into the mirror of the word and not being a forgetful hearer but a doer of the word; this one will be blessed in what he/she does. I believe you will agree it’s the little things, the everyday tasks and decisions that shape our character… let’s purpose to do everything heartily.

Next week, we look at the motivation behind our actions “as unto the Lord and NOT unto man.”

Cadets from the Civil Air Patrol Jesse Jones Squadron 304, volunteered at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum’s World War II Weekend at the Reading Regional Airport from Friday, June 7 to Sunday, July 9.

Cadets and Senior Members from the local Lancaster Civil Air Patrol Squadron, joined with other squadrons within the Pennsylvania and Maryland Wings, assisting the Reading Squadron in parking vehicles, managing visitors, and ensuring flight line safety at the 33rd Annual Mid Atlantic Museum’s World War II Weekend. This event brings together war veterans, history and aviation enthusiasts and community members. Visitors can enjoy an air show that includes war birds, re-enactments, vehicle and aircraft displays, and a D-Day remembrance, amongst other activities.

The Reading Composite Squadron hosted 194 members from 19 squadrons in PA and MD for the third largest WW2 event in terms of attendance this past weekend, with 136 cadets and 58 senior members. Representations came from

various squadrons, including Lebanon VFW, Jesse Jones, Capital City, Harrisburg International, York, College Park, Quakertown, Chester County, Delco, Doylestown, Willow Grove JRB, Scranton, Northeast Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley Composite Squadrons, and Calvert Cadet Squadron. This is one of the many activities that the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 participates in to support the community.

Service to their community, their state and their nation is a primary part of the cadet programs within the Civil Air Patrol.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located, on the airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are always welcome. Shown in the photo, from

left to right, are Lancaster Squadron 304 Cadets Cadet Airman First Class Daniel Landis, Cadet Airman Kevin Heisey, Cadet Staff Sergeant Carter Bojake and Cadet Airman First Class Michael Pietrangeli.
