Homesick
December 5, 1977
St. Petersburg, Florida
Now I live in the great city filled with noise, Where racket and din bang and resound. And the people forget their duty as brothers and neighbors, And all kinds of devilish pranks prevail.
In my sunset days there is time to look back Upon an earlier generation, quite different in nature. And I am homesick, yes, I am homesick!
For the beautiful days of youth and a bygone time.
There’s where I used to walk barefooted through the fields, In the meadow, in the orchard and deep in the woods. There, now, stand great, proud houses, Where horses and cows and sheep used to graze.
Automobiles now course there - no horses and carriages! The dust has been laid, but there’s much more hubbub. There’s smoke and smell - the air no longer clearWith commotion and hullabaloo, day and night.
I am homesick - terribly homesick - for the folks, The neighbors, brothers and sisters, all the cousins, Uncles and aunts so dear - homesick for Dad and Mom, Who tried to train us with example and word.
Homesick for Mom’s calico apron, Where I dried my tears and Mom Used to stroke my head when something hurtWhen Pop used to tell me how to avoid trouble.
Homesick for the old schoolhouse and schoolmates: Playing hide and seek and tag and blindman’s bluff - great fun!
And the schoolteacher used to look on (as we played), Sometimes he joined in, then back again to our classes.
Homesick for the small stone meetinghouse on Sunday: The singing was so lovely, the sermon so clear, Young and old led to the right path. And the Sunday visit when church was over.
The good food prepared by the busy women and daughters.
Homesick for the songs of the birds, enchanting clamor. The bats, the bees, the hawks sweeping through the air: Often lying on our back in the grass we took all this in.
Homesick for the sweet smelling mock orange bush, The carnations, the roses and the lilacs here Next to the house - daffodils, lilies and also
The wild flowers of all description - red, yellow and blue.
Homesick for strawberries, plums, peaches and applesAnd searching for dandelion in springtime and fishing in the creek.
Wading and swimming in the cool, deep milldam.Sledding in the wintertime and the snowman great and stout.
Homesick for all the wonderful bygone experiences. But now I’m looking into the time to come, To the place I’ll be going before long: Into a glorious land that looms there in the future: In that land there is Eternal Rest and GloryNever to be homesick again! ***
“Papa” Horning was taken from us on Monday evening, May 12, 1986. He led an active independent life as a painter and poet until last Thanksgiving. At Christmas time, he joined his daughter and son-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. Jack H. Wolf, on 65th Street Court in Bradenton, Florida. His suffering came to an end four months later. Paul Horning departed this life in his 92nd year.
We bade farewell to “Papa” Horning on Monday morning, May 19, in the lovely Allegheny United Church of Christ in Alleghenyville - in Paul’s beloved Berks County - and finally on the Bowmansville graveyard - in Lancaster County. We are gratified to know that Paul’s remains lie near many of our own deceased relatives, including our paternal grandparents and great-grandparents.
Even though we bid farewell to “Papa” Horning in this ECK, we shall never forget him and the example his life set for us. Paul’s character exemplified all the positive virtues of the Pennsylvania Dutch. And he gave us much, much more than we ever could have given him in return. To the end of his ninety-first year, Paul shared his talents with others. We shall deeply miss him, yet we will continue to draw on his legacy as a poet and a painter for the rest of our days.

* On August 7, 1935, a tennis match in London was interrupted by, of all things, flying ants. The obnoxious critters didn’t just annoy athletes, but encroached on people’s kitchen pantries and piled up on their doorsteps. Authorities called it the worst pestilential attack in 25 years.
* On August 8, 1921, the ship Alaska, which was headed for San Francisco, hit a rocky ledge twice off the coast of Alaska during a fog, causing the ship’s boilers to explode. A number of passengers were thrown into the ocean. While 166 people were rescued by the ship Anyox, 31 remained missing and 28 lost their lives.
* On August 9, 1979, the seaside town of Brighton became the first major resort in Britain to set aside a 200yard stretch of its beach for nudists. When it officially opened the following year, Councillor Eileen Jakes told the attendant media: “There are 2,000 naturists in Sussex and millions of other people fly to the South of France each year to strip off. I would like to see them come here instead.”

How Much Should A Backpack Weigh?
Backpacks are handy tools that carry an array of gear. Students rely on them to hold books, while hikers and campers utilize backpacks to carry items such as food and beverages that keep them safe on trails. Even office workers may turn to backpacks to carry laptops or other tools of the trade.
Backpacks are handy resources, but overstuffed backpacks may cause injury. Backpacks should only carry weight that people can handle, and there are guidelines that can help people safely utilize backpacks.
The weight of a backpack depends on the age of the person using it. Generally speaking, adults should not exceed 20 percent of total body mass when loading backpacks. That means a healthy person weighing 200 pounds should not carry more than 40 pounds in his or her backpack.
In regard to children, researchers indicate that a child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10
percent of what the student weighs. Those findings are based on a Spanish study
involving 49 primary school-aged children.

How To Nurture And Support Students Interested In The Arts
Schools are diverse communities in which people from all walks of life gather to teach, learn and pursue an assortment of interests and passions. Students are perhaps the best reflection of that diversity, as even small schools are home to young people who excel in sports, music, theater, and, of course, academics. Many young people harbor a strong interest in the arts, which can provide some surprising benefits. For example, the National Endowment for the Arts reports that students with high arts participation and low socioeconomic status have a 4 percent dropout rate. That’s five times lower than their low socioeconomic status peers. In addition, a report from the Rice Kinder Institute for Urban Research found that arts education experiences reduce the proportion of
students in school receiving disciplinary infractions by 3.6 percent.
Despite the myriad benefits of participation in arts education, which can include improved performance in the classroom, Americans

for the Arts notes that not all students have access to art-based educational experiences. Parents of students who are interested in the arts can try various approaches to nurture those interests.
• Support school-based arts education programs. Funding for arts programs is perpetually in jeopardy. Each state and school district is different, but a 2013 report from the National Association of State Boards
of Education found that federal funding for arts and humanities programs totaled roughly $250 million a year, while the National Science Foundation received around $5 billion annually. Arts and sciences are both important, and parents can support legislation that directs more federal funding for the arts while urging local legislators to direct more money to arts education.
• Make art a part of life at home. Americans for
the Arts recommends that parents make the arts part of life at home. Participating alongside children as they sing, dance, draw, play music or pursue other artsbased interests is a great way to incorporate the arts into home life while showing kids how fun the arts can be.
• Research local performing arts schools. Children who exhibit an especially strong interest in the arts may benefit from enrolling in a school that specializes in performing arts. Such schools may be open to kids as young as five and extend all the way through high school. Some performing arts schools require prospective students to audition or apply. Arts high schools still offer instruction in core academic subjects, but parents should explore each school’s curriculum before deciding if a given school is right for their children.
Arts education can have a profound impact on the life of a young person. There are many ways for parents to nurture and encourage their children’s interest in the arts.
How Much Should A Backpack Weigh?
(Continued From Page 7A)
Therefore, if a child weighs 70 pounds, he or she should only carry up to 7 pounds in the backpack. Individuals also should follow a few other backpack recommendations to alleviate injuries. It’s not a good idea to wear a backpack hanging from only one shoulder. A backpack should be worn on both shoulders, and ideally with a lumbar strap. This will help to prevent muscular pains by providing well-rounded support.
A backpack with wide, padded straps can minimize pressure on the shoulders, back and collarbone. Backpacks made of lightweight material will not add much additional weight to what’s being carried. Another tip is for children and adults to pack the heaviest item carried in the backpack closest to the center of the back to minimize strain.
Failure to follow guidelines may result in pain and injuries and have negative effects on balance, which may increase the risk of falls or other injuries. Whenever possible, individuals may want to use trolley backpacks, which are on wheels. They can be dragged, alleviating the need to carry heavy loads.

Safe School Carpooling
Students have a few different options to get to and from school. In areas where school bus service is provided, children have an easy way to get to class each day. But if no bus service is available, students must be driven to school by their parents or neighbors.
Busy parents frequently band together to form carpooling teams to ensure students get to school on time. Carpooling is ecofriendly, convenient and can foster stronger relationships between students and the parents of those students. Sharing rides also can be fun for kids and motivate them to get out the door so they can see their friends.
Safety should be a priority for carpoolers, and drivers can take the following steps to ensure kids get to school safely.
• Know the laws regarding safety seats as they pertain to age, weight and height.
• Each child will need to ride in a seat that is appropriate and shortcuts should not be taken. If there isn’t room in the vehicle to sit all children comfortably and in the proper restraint, then you must reduce the number of passengers in your vehicle.
• Children should ride in the backseat of the vehicle as a priority. Many kids can be safely moved to the front seat around age 13.
• Instruct children to remain in their seats until the car has come to a complete stop. Only then should they remove their seatbelts.
• Make sure students enter and exit the vehicle on the curb side instead of on the street side.
• Instruct passengers to keep their hands and heads inside of the vehicle. If necessary, engage child locks on doors and windows.
• Do not leave a child alone at an empty home in the afternoon. Wait until you see a child go inside his or her home before you drive away.
• Keep the radio low and minimize distractions while driving others.
Teaching Habits To Help Get Kids On A Healthy Track For The Future
Childhood obesity is a serious medical issue affecting children around the world, but notably in North America. While the issue has been around for decades, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says American children and teenagers have witnessed a significant increase in weight gain since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Younger school-aged children have been among the hardest hit during the pandemic. A study published
in September 2021 found the percentage of obese children and teens increased to 22 percent compared with 19 percent before the pandemic.
The CDC looked at the BMI of study subjects between March 1, 2020 and November 30, 2020. One of the study’s authors, Dr. Alyson Goodman of the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, described the results as “substantial and alarming.”
Being less physically
active, overweight and eating the wrong foods can start children on a path toward problems that once were only considered conditions of adulthood, namely hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol, offers the Mayo Clinic. To reverse course, parents, guardians and educators can focus on helping children become more physically fit. The following are a few ways to do so.
• Encourage participation in sports or other physical activities. Sports practices, games, competitions, and other activities may keep
children moving for an hour or more several days per week. However, the Amer-
ican Academy of Pediatrics states that only 25 percent of children get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Emphasize a fun activity with a focus on movement that produces shortness of breath, body warmth and sweat. These are indicators that the heart rate is really pumping.
• Use exercise as a reward and not a punishment. Make exercise something kids can look forward to. Reward a job well done on a test with extra time biking with friends or a hiking trip to a scenic national park,. Kids will be begin to associate exercise with fun.
• Offer a variety of foods. Kids who eat a variety of
foods are more likely to get the nutrients the body needs, according to Kids Health® by Nemours. These healthy foods should include at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, with an emphasis on vegetables.
• Limit screen time. Children may be inclined to entertain themselves by heading for the television, mobile phone or tablet first, especially after a year-plus of being stuck indoors. But parents can make a concerted effort to limit kids’ screen time in favor of more physically challenging pursuits.
• Teach healthy eating habits. A Harris Poll survey conducted on behalf of the American Psychological Association found that 61 percent of respondents age 18 and older reported a median weight gain of 15 pounds during the pandemic. Teach children that weight loss is accomplished when more calories are burned than consumed. Pay attention to portion sizes and explain how beverages like fruit juices can be sneaky sources of extra calories. Teaching healthy habits now can help kids enjoy healthy futures.

Biblical Message
Something We All Need
by Pastor Kevin Sadler“Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness” (Col. 1:11).
Did you hear the Texas tall tale about the teacher who was helping one of her
W
kindergarten students put on his cowboy boots? He asked for help, and she could see why. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn’t want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, “Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.” She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn’t any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet. He then announced, “These aren’t my boots.” She bit her tongue rather than…scream,
“Why didn’t you say so?”
Once again, she struggled to help him pull the illfitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they gotten the boots off when he said, “They’re my brother’s boots. My mom made me wear ’em.” Now she didn’t know if she should laugh or cry, but she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the
boots on his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, “Now, where are your mittens?” He said, “I stuffed ’em in the toes of my boots.”
This teacher is a perfect example of patience and long-suffering. This is something we all need in life. Difficult people and circumstances in our lives can make patience and long-

suffering difficult to live out. However, we are promised God’s help in this area. By the indwelling Holy Spirit we are “strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power” to be more patient and long-suffering.
God is long-suffering. During this present evil age, God is demonstrating His long-suffering as He gives all people an opportunity to be saved (1 Tim. 1:16; 2 Pet. 3:15). And while believers are not perfect in their practice, God is patient and long-suffering with us as we grow in Christ. One aspect of godliness (or Godlikeness) is to be patient and long-suffering like Him (Eph. 5:1).
God wants us to endure patiently and suffer long with those who may try our patience to the limit. God desires long fuses as misunderstandings arise, cutting words are said, or unkind actions are done. The old nature lashes out, retaliates, and is impatient, but God wants self-restraint in His strength. God’s selfless love teaches us that “Charity suffereth long, and…is not easily provoked” (1 Cor. 13:4-5). Living out this attribute of Christ in our relationships can make a great difference in the quality of these relationships and, in turn, the quality of our lives.

Holy Trinity is at 167 East Main Street, Ephrata. Enter the church at the back of the building where there are glass doors and a sign saying “Church Office.”
Bring your child inside on the first day so they get to know you and you can fill out a short, emergency contact card. At 12:00 noon, please park and pick up your child in person.
If you have questions, call the church office at 717-7334134. There is someone in the office daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
It is useful to know who is planning to attend. Calling the church to give your child’s name, your name and telephone number would be helpful. However, it is not necessary to pre-register. You may simply come the first day. Can’t attend every single day due to other family plans or appointments? Attend the number of days you’re able. You’ll be happy you didn’t miss the free fun!
ELANCO Library Draws Enthusiastic Crowd For Reptile Program
The ELANCO Library recently welcomed Jesse Rothacker and his Forgotten Friend reptile program to a packed house of inquisitive young minds. Children learned lots of interesting facts and Jesse shared tips on how to safely react when encountering wildlife. Children saw lizards, turtles, snakes and a crocodile. Shown in the photo is 6-year-old Hudson Hess from Stevens as he bravely volunteers to allow three snakes to wrap around him during the live show. After Hudson was chosen from the crowd, he shared a quick story about an anaconda that wrapped around him and his sister at a reptile park and in the struggle to escape, he lost a shoe.
Local Artist Jim Heston Featured At Adamstown Area Library
Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese
Illustrations have accompanied literature for centuries. Visitors to the Adamstown Area Library can see a recently installed display of this relationship on the library’s fireplace mantel. It is a series of illustrations celebrating literature’s most famous authors, including Poe, Dickens, Shakespeare and others. The work consists of pen and ink drawings, water color paintings and wood carvings, created by local artist, Jim Heston (shown in the photo). The Poe print entitled, “Nevermore,” was done in scratch-board, an unusual medium, where the artist scratches through layers of black ink to expose the white clay underneath, making a black and white picture. Colored ink was then applied to the picture.
Heston’s art career began in elementary school, when he drew caricatures of his classmates, one of whom has kept a trove of those long ago drawings. After graduating from high school, Jim enlisted in the Army and became a Registered Nurse. He remained in service for 30 years, retiring at the rank of Colonel. His career included overseas assignments in Korea, Vietnam, Germany and Honduras. After retirement, he and his wife,
