Naddierlich gebt’s viel Wadde heit
As nei sin un aa fremmWadde net in der deitsche Schprooch As mer glannt hen vun de Memm.

Awwer ich schwetz net vun der Satt Wadde, Die gehne so mit nei, Verzoddelt darich unser SchproochMer nemmt’s in Acht net, glei.
Awwer’s sin noch blendi Wadde Im Deitsche, bekannt zu eem, Viel gude dietsche Wadde, As mer glannt hen als daheem.
Yuscht darich die Yaahre heert mer As die dietsche Wadde vergehne.
Sie sin verlore vun de Schprooch, Weil Leit vum Englische lehne.
Mit so viel Englisch neigeriehrt, Dann wunnert mer ferwas, Mir so viel Deitsch vergesse hen
Sin mir vielleicht zu lass?
Ferwas saage deel Leit “Christmas,” Wann’s alt Watt “Grischtdaag” is?
Deel saage “paint” fer “Fareb,” Un “peanuts” fer “Grundniss.”
Deel saage “sink” for “Schpielbank,”
Un die Daage vun de Woch
Heert mer oft gsaat in EnglischLeit wisse besser doch.
Ferwas saage deel Leit “different,” Wann sie “unnerschittlich” meene?
Sie saage’s “baby” hot yo “tears.” Es sett “Bobbli” sei un “Drehne.”
Un noch so gleene Wadde
So wie “awwer” odder “deel,”
Sin ebmols gsaat in Englisch, “But” un “some” noch, meiner Seel!
Die Wadde laude gschpassich, Wann mer Deitsch am schwetze sin.
Doch heert mer so Sach meh un meh: Deitsch mit viel Englisch drin.
Vun dem sin mir all schuldich!
Ich zehle mich gut dabei.
Vun Englisch Wadde lehne Sin kens vun uns ganz frei.
Wann mir net achtsam sin, Dann, is des Deitsch glei grunne Wie Wasser darich en grosser Sieb, Un’s Deitsch is ganz verschwunne!
So wann mir Deitsch dann schwetze, Lass uns all hatt browiere
Die alde deitsche Wadde net Vun unser Schprooch verliere!

Our Mother Tongue Is Disappearing Our Pennsylvania Dutch speech Is perhaps in danger. Yes, our month tongue is not As pure as heretofore.
I know surely that many people
Appreciate highly our Dutch speech, But listen to the majority How they mix Dutch with English.
The English words sneak in, Like thieves, one by one. They steal our German tongue, The big words and the small.
Naturally there are many words today That are new and strangeWords not in the Dutch language That we learned from Mother.
Words, like telephone, Radio and actor, Typewriters and stereos, Planes and chiropractor.
But I don’t speak of these words, They go along in, Scattered through our speechSoon one takes no note of it.
But there are still many words In Dutch, familiar to one, Many good German words, That we learned at home.
But through the years one hears That the Dutch words disappear. They are lost from the language, Because folks borrow from the English.
With so much English mixed in, One wonders why, We have lost so much DutchAre we perhaps too careless?
Why do some folks say “Christmas,” When the old word is “Grischtdaag?”
Some say “paint” for “Fareb,” And “peanuts” for “Grundniss.”
Some say “sink” for “Schpielbank,” And the days of the week One often hears said in EnglishYet people know better.
Why do some folks say “different,” If they mean “unnerschittlich?”
They say the baby has tears. It should be “Bobbli” and “Drehne.”
And some more little words Such as “awwer” or “deel,”
And sometimes said in English, “But” and “some,” by gosh!
These words sound funny, When one speaks Dutch. Still, one hears such things more and more: Dutch with a great deal of English. Of this we all are guilty!
I include myself in this. Of borrowing English words None of us is completely free. If we are not careful, Then our Dutch will soon have leaked out Like water through a large sieve, And the Dutch will have quite disappeared!
So when we speak Dutch, Let us try hard Not to let the old Dutch words Become lost from our speech! ***
This week we are delighted to share with our SHOPPING NEWS readers a recent poem by Gladys S. Martin of Ephrata, Route 3. Even though Gladys mailed DIE MUDDERSCHPROOCH IS AM VERSCHWINNE last February, it did not go into the hopper until a second copy
reached us in mid-April. It appears that the United States mails did not do their job in this case. We thank Gladys for her patience and understanding.
DIE MUDDERSCHPROOCH IS AM VERSCHWINNE speaks for itself. Gladys has also sent us a prose article on the same topic. We will print it in a later ECK. As Gladys wrote on April 10, “I hope no one will take offense. I would not want to hurt anyone’s feelings.”
We share Gladys’ feelings, for it was at our suggestion that Gladys wrote on this subject.
We are anxious to hear from many of our SHOPPING NEWS readers! What are your feelings? Do you consider this infiltration of English words and expressions into our MUDDERSCHPROOCH to be a dangerous thing? Let’s have a straw vote!
PLEASE send us a postal card or a short letter telling us your views! Is our the last generation to be speaking Pennsylvania Dutch? Are any of you readers concerned at all?

Many Infallible Proofs
by Dr. Arthur Birkby
Continued from last week’s issue.
Mathematics is regarded as the purest of the sciences, and the value of the Greek letter “pi” as approximately 3.1416 is recognized as a basic numerical constant throughout the universe as well as a function of geometry. How easy it would have been for an author of one of the Bible’s books to err in recording some data involving mathematical computations. Only God’s inspired authorship, however, prevented any such thing from happening.
In I Kings 7:23 is given a description of the huge water reservoir in the temple used for ceremonial washings. We are told that the basin was 10 cubits, or about 15 feet, in diameter and 30
cubits in circumference. Technically, using the value of “pi,” this should be 31.416 cubits rather than 30. But in verse 26 we learn that the basin was a “hand breadth” thick, or about three inches thick, which would make the inside circumference 30 cubits as the Bible says. Even the most nitpicky critic should be impressed with this evidence of Biblical accuracy.
Luke, in Acts 17:6, refers to a city official by using the Greek term, “Politarch.” This term has never before been found in Greek literature, so Bible critics have pointed out what seemed to be an invention by Luke. In the year 1835, an arch in Thessalonica was discovered with the term “Politarch” inscribed on it, and the Apostle Paul was in Thessalonica at the time of which Luke was writing. In 1867 the arch was destroyed, but the block containing the word “Politarch” was rescued and is now in the British museum. My wife, son, and I saw the display of Greek memorabilia when we visited the museum, but unfortunately we did not
take note of this particular piece of stone. Incidentally, since the discovery in 1835, this same description has been found on 16 other monuments in various other localities in Greece.
In summary, all of the foregoing examples—which hardly scratch the surface— demonstrate the uncanny, inexplicable accuracy and complete reliability of God’s Word. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself in John 17:17 said that God’s Word is Truth. In John 10:35 the Savior says the Scriptures cannot be broken; and Matthew 5:18 quotes the Lord as saying that the smallest letter (which is iota in Greek) or the least stroke of a pen (referring to the minuscule embellishments added to the Hebrew alphabet) would not disappear as long as there was a heaven and an earth. The Bible teaches that there will be a heaven and an earth forever.
Let me conclude by suggesting that whenever we are confronted with presumably authoritative opinions that seem to be at variance with what one reads in our Bible, we take to heart
the Apostle Paul’s words found in his first letter to the Corinthians. He triumphantly declares, “I know very well how foolish it sounds to those who are lost, when they hear that Jesus died to save them. But we who are saved recognize this message as the very power of God. For God says, ‘I will destroy all human plans of salvation no matter how wise they seem to be, and ignore the best ideas of men, even the most brilliant of them.’” So what about these wise men, these scholars, these brilliant debaters of this world’s great affairs? God has made them all look foolish, and shown their wisdom to be useless nonsense. For God in His wisdom saw to it that the world would never find God through human brilliance, and then He stepped in and saved all those who believed His message, which the world calls foolish and silly…This so-called ‘foolish’ plan of God is far wiser than the wisest plan of the wisest man, and God in His ‘weakness’—Christ dying on the Cross—is far stronger than any man. Amen and amen.

Berks History Holds Road Ramble
Berks History Center (BHC) is excited for the return of its popular annual event, the Road Ramble, taking place on Saturday, October 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Road Ramble is a selfguided driving tour that introduces attendees to littleknown facts about historical sites throughout the county. This year, participants can hop in the car with the whole family and ramble between Birdsboro and Geigertown.
The Fall 2024 route heads off the beaten path and highlights a blend of historic structures, scenic vistas, locations associated with local folklore, and notable sites such as the Beidler House, Nolde Forest Environmental Center, Berks Military History Museum, Mt. Frisby AME Church, the Brooke Mansion and more.
“We are thrilled to invite the community to join us for the Berks History Center’s Annual Road Ramble,” said BHC Executive Director, Benjamin Neely. “This event is a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to come together, explore the rich history of Southern Berks County, and create lasting memories. With each turn, participants will uncover the unique stories and landmarks that make our region so special.”
This year’s event begins at Ridgewood Winery in Birdsboro, and concludes at Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (Joanna Furnace) in Geigertown. There is a cost for tickets and they can be purchased online at berkshistory.org.
For more information, call BHC at 610-375-4375 during their hours of operation, Wednesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
