This week’s “Pieces From The Past” features the New Holland Historical Society. In this “Pieces From The Past Article,” Shopping News readers will learn about a local item housed in the New Holland Historical Society.
More than one historical source refers to Isaac Ellmaker as the “Wanamaker of New Holland.” By 1800, his general store sold everything a family needed (and some things they didn’t need). On display at the New Holland Area Historical Society Museum (located

In February of 1796, Lightner was an innkeeper and owned the hotel to the west of the general store (now the west end of the museum). Very likely, Ellmaker boarded at the hotel next to his store. He purchased the hotel along with the store in April of 1796, and it was renamed the “Ellmaker Hotel.”
at the same place as his store), is the second ledger (Ledger B) that was used in his business from 1795 until 1800. The page is opened to the contra accounts for William Lightner. Two entries made on February 6, 1796, reveal relevant information about Ellmaker:
• Entry #1 “Rent for the Store” (4.10.) – Ellmaker
owed four pounds and 10 shillings to William Lightner because Lightner owned the building at that time. The structure at the “Museum on Main” was built by George Lightner and inherited by his son, William, in the mid1790s. By the end of April in 1796, Isaac Ellmaker purchased the building.
• Entry #2 – “30 weeks
The ledgers for the store reflected assets and liabilities in pounds, shillings and pences until 1811, when they converted to dollars and cents. Adding columns of numbers was more challenging in the earlier days because there were 12 pence to the shilling, and 20 shillings to the pound! Isaac Ellmaker died in 1834, and his soninlaw, William Hiester, inherited the building. Hiester ran a successful campaign in 1830, running on the AntiMasonic party ticket, and served three terms in the U.S. Congress.

THE COLORFUL WORLD
Isn’t this a colorful world? Doesn’t this make you glad?
What if things were only black and white, And maybe grey, too?
I am thankful that the earth
Is brilliant with color.
Colors in abundance, yes, Like a large basket of flowers.
Think about each color
And what you think of them.
Mention “red” and many folks Think of a flower.
But red is also the color
Of strawberries, radishes too. Watermelon and cardinals, Tomatoes, and there’s red hair also.
Think of blue and immediately One thinks of the sky above, Blueberries, blue jays, Blue grapes in the yard.
Yellow is such a happy color, It makes one think of the sun, Yellow apples, goldfinches, Chicks one thinks of also.
Green is a special color, Spring would not come at all,
If there were no more green and
Green trees and green wheat, Green lawns on every hand, Green garden plants peeping, Green all over our land.
Think of white and one thinks of “snow,” Covered deeply over the earth, And of fluffy clouds one thinks In the sweet summertime.
Black color we like too, Black horses and black cows. Black cats, blackberries, And also black poultry.
Orange makes one think About fat pumpkins in the field, Oranges in a lunch box, Tigers in a circus tent.
Do you think the color brown Doesn’t look quite as bright and pretty? But think of brown rabbits, Smooth chestnuts, river stones.
Brown owls and corn shocks, And honey clear and sweet. Oh yes, brown is quite necessary In the garden filled with vegetables.
Yes, the world has many colors. They are always here with us. And I say that I am so thankful, That my world is not only gray!
This week and next week, we return to the writings of Gladys S. Martin of Glenwood Drive graad do in Effredaa. In this ECK, we feature DIE FAREWICH WELT, which celebrates the world of colors in nature.
Gladys Martin is an inspiration to us all! We hope that those of you who have never sat down with pencil and notebook (or typewriter) will be inspired to do so. Send us your poems, anecdotes, lists of proverbs, list of unusual Dutch words, etc. They are all grist for our mill!!! We like variety. As the old saying goes: “Variety is the spice of life.”
Next week you will read Gladys Martin’s poem DES WEIBSMENSCH IN DER SCHPIGGEL, The Woman In The Mirror.

* On September 2, 1945, Vietnamese communist Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam’s independence from France following Japan’s World War II surrender, in a proclamation stating, “All men are born equal: the Creator has given us inviolable rights, life, liberty, and happiness!” It would take another 30 years for his vision of a united communist Vietnam to become a reality, however.

It’s Just Natural
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Philippians 1:2930 “For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe, but also to suffer for His sake, having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me.”
Christian persecutions, suffering for His sake; it’s just natural, if we are truly standing for Christ, it can be no other way, accept it, prepare for it, and endure it, for the sake of the Gospel and the Kingdom.
Believing in Christ always has a price. Remember what our Lord said about discipleship? Discipleship requires: denying self, taking up your cross, and following Him.
Christ must mean more to a disciple than father, mother, sister, brother, wife and children. “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). There is no need for a complex drawn out explanation of this verse. Simply put, Christ isn’t teaching us to hate family members, but in comparison to our commitment to him, they are not to be an obstacle or stand in the way of salvation or obedience.
Relationally, He is to be first in the disciple’s life, second to none. The disciple is a single minded individual who is devoted to the Master. A person must be willing to forsake all that he/ she has to follow Him.
Persecution will come from family and friends. When a person embraces Christ and tries to testify and witness to family and friends, they will face resistance to the message. It’s a given that you will face some form of
resentment, disdain or contempt. This reaction is quite normal and should be expected; “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master, if they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you’” (John 15:18). I remember well when my mother would stand for Christ, with her then adult children, and try to witness to them while she was in her late seventies; they would mock her and laugh at her. She was only concerned for their eternal destiny. After I
was saved my friends soon scattered.
There are rare times this resentment does not occur but it’s not the norm and we would do well to expect some resistance. The Bible states, “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Persecution will come from your own country
Liberty Baptist Church
Unless you haven’t noticed, “America is no longer a Christian nation” as a former President declared; and then determined to make that a reality. This nation was founded on Biblical principles. Twentyseven of the fiftysix signers of the Declaration of Independence had a degree from Princeton, Harvard, Yale and others schools that were originally founded as seminaries. Some of the founders were unbelievers, but for the most part, the founders agreed on principles, an overall moral fiber, and an absolute belief in God; examine their writings. As our nation departs farther from any form of Biblical truth, the nation becomes more divided and crumbles morally. There are people and groups that hate biblical truth because it condemns their behavior as sin. Why do certain groups hate the Bible? John 3:19 says, “Men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil.” It’s pretty simple actually. That same hatred will be focused on you when standing for biblical truth.
Persecution will come from the world at large. Believing in the Lord, in many places in the world, will cost you dearly; you will be an outcast from your family, you will lose your job and maybe never work again. There are some places in this world where professing Christ will even cost you your very life. Open Doors USA reports that from the world watch list: in one year…2,983 Christians were killed for their faith, 3,711 Christians were detained without trial, arrested, sentenced, and imprisoned, 9,488 churches or Christian buildings were attacked, 11 countries scored in “extreme” levels of persecution of Christians; 6 years ago only one, North Korea, scored this high. In summary, we are to expect a resistance to the gospel message, it’s just natural, but stay faithful and declare it. “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).

children with disabilities to exercise, have fun and experience the thrill of victory! Along with teaching football and cheerleading fundamentals, the UDS Challenger program gives participants the chance to pull together as a team in front of a cheering crowd. Every player participates to
their level of achievement, and everybody gets their chance to shine in the spotlight. Football players, ages eight to twenty-one, and cheerleaders of any age can participate, no experience required. Cocalico football players have volunteered with this program for the past few years, and they
have been amazing supports and role models. UDS would like to thank those players and their parents for their politeness, kindness and for being great examples for the participants. Most of all, UDS appreciates how the players give all of the UDS participants a chance to feel special.
Shown is “Chance,” Cocalico’s new mascot, as he gives high fives to the UDS Challenger crew as they stand on the field to greet the team.

OBITUARIES
Ida Y. Jones
Ida Y. Jones, 85, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2024, at Moravian Manor, Lititz. Born in Nanty Glo, Pa., Ida was a daughter of the late James E. and Cora Belle (Wilson) Fuller and the devoted wife to Jack Jones for over 64 years, until his passing in April of this year. Ida grew up in the Johnstown area, a graduate of Nanty Glo High School, and later moved to Lancaster County for work. Ida and Jack were high school sweethearts; they married and started their family in Ephrata. She worked for Dutch Maid Inc. in Office administrations for many years and then worked for Redner’s in Ephrata for over 15 years as parttime work in her retirement. Ida was a faithful member of New Covenant Church of God in Ephrata where she was the Church Treasurer for a long time, taught Sunday school, and each year made peanut butter eggs for the Easter fundraiser. She enjoyed baking and made the best pumpkin rolls. Ida loved drinking coffee, she would heat up her coffee and drink
it all day. She was frugal and had a knack to repurpose things that others would consider waste. ‘Nana’ was her name to the great grandchildren who she loved dearly. She was always supportive of the grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events, going to watch them play local soccer, baseball, and football. She loved her ice cream Diet Coke floats; those were her favorite treats. She enjoyed playing board games of all kinds with anyone who would play, particularly with her sister, Sharon. She valued traditions such as family together for holidays and
New Years Eve sauerkraut and kielbasa sandwiches. She was always honest, almost to a fault. Ida was high spirited and grounded in her values and will forever be remembered for her endless love of family and faith. Ida is survived by three children, Connie Peters (Scott) of Ephrata, Jack Jones Jr (Tena) of Ephrata; Gary Jones (Donna) of Akron; four grandchildren, Jackie Yohn (Dan), Jodee Berry (Nick), Robert Jones (Alyssa), Tom Hess (Monica); 14 great grandchildren; sister, Sharon Hess of Kutztown and sister-in-law, Betty Grant of Belsano. In addition to her husband and parents, Ida was predeceased by eight siblings, Evelyn, Thelma, Gloria, Dot, Twila, Jim, Gary, and infant sister, Barbara.
A Viewing was held on Thursday, Aug. 29th at Gravenor Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, Pa 17522. Interment will be private in Memory Gardens, Ephrata. A Celebration of Life service will take place on Sat., Sept. 7th at 11 a.m. New Covenant Church of God, 114 E. Main St., Suite B, Ephrata, PA 17522.
