It has been three weeks since Hurricane Helene made landfall on the Florida Gulf coast, then making its way through Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia and Tennessee. This historic storm left a trail of destruction in its wake, including devastating flooding throughout the Blue Ridge Mountain region. Last week, Hurricane Milton caused even more damage across Florida.
News and photos from the effected areas left many local residents wondering what they could do to help those in need. Several local non-profits who specialize in such disaster-relief immediately responded,
sending supplies and volunteers to the southeast.
Many more groups and individuals sprang into action, organizing donation drives throughout the area,
loading trucks with cleanup supplies and personal care items.
One such pop-up collection took place at John Beck

Reid Diffenbach and Addy Dullinger (all sixth grade Student Council members at John Beck); (back) Steven Lin (John Beck Principal), Eric Ford (Shopping News employee with family connections to Damascus), Brent Miller (DenTech Industrial) and Devon Wolf (DenTech Industrial).
Principal Lin previously served as an administrator at
school districts in southwest Virginia. Though the area he resided in was mostly spared from hurricane damage, nearby areas were devastated by flooding.
“A reading specialist with whom I’d worked in Roanoke put me in touch with her friend from the Damascus region, who reported the dire need for supplies. Much of the small town was destroyed by the flooding,” says Lin. “Many mountain roads are washed out, and some communities on nearby Konnarock Mountain are only receiving supplies via pack mules. Recognizing that most supplies are understandably headed to the Asheville, North Carolina, region, I wanted to give back to the lesser publicized regions

Lin reached out to John Beck’s PTO, who quickly organized a supply drive. A list of needed items was distributed, and the school community came together last week, filling a truck that Lin planned to deliver personally to the Virginia Emergency Management Headquarters and supplies depot in Damascus this past weekend. The truck was graciously provided by DenTech Industrial.

WIE ICH EN GLEE BOBBELI WAAR

Wie ich en ganz glee Bobbli waar, Mei Kopp waar blutt - ganz unni Haar. Mei Meili hot ken Zaah drin ghat, Fer Diddi drinke hedde sie nix gebatt.
Mei Naas waar gross, die Haut waar gehl. En runzlich Gsicht un unni Fehl Waar die Memm mich arig leedich.
Mei Dress waar iwwer vier Fuuss lang Un Unnerreck en grosser Schtrang. Sie hen mich eigewickelt ghat
In Debbich - oh, en ganzi Latt! Un was mich nau verschtaune dutt, Is das en Mensch mit Fleesch un Blut So Sach darich mache kann.
Die alde Weiwer hen mich oft bsucht Un hen verfiehrt en grossi Gsucht. “Ei, unvergleichlich schee glee Kind! Ei, mein’che Zeit, was hot’s en Gwicht.
Es geht net lang, d’no werd sei Gsicht So weiss - (Ei, was es lacht!)”

WHEN I WAS A TINY INFANT
Now I want to compose a rhyme
When I was a tiny infant,
My head was bare - quite without hair.
My mouth had no tooth in it, To drink milk it was of no use.
My nose was large, the skin was yellow. A wrinkly face and without doubt
My mother was quite tired of me.
My dress was over 4 feet long And petticoats quite a pile.
They had me wrapped up
In quilts - oh, quite a few! And what amazes me now
Is that a human being of flesh and blood
Can stand such treatment.
The old ladies visited me often And made a big fuss “Oh, my goodness, how heavy already. It won’t be long, then it’s face Will be so white - (Oh, how it laughs!)”
The girls loved me the most, They never tired of kissing (me). They were so foolishIn pure love they squeezed and squeezed. I felt so terrible
Because I had to sit there And not return their love.
Kint’s daughters used to take me And sang into my face.
But something - what a chore: Lid snooped, her nose quite sore; Betz smoked like a chimney.
I wanted to file objections, That’s why I cried so pitifully. Then to quiet me Betz
Gave me things from her mouth: Chewed crackers, cheese and bread.
Phew! Taste of tobacco!
I was almost dead!
That was food for babies!
When I think back to the time
About nothing but truthful matters: Because everyone was once an infant, Then you have experienced it yourselves, That my story up to the end Is as true of the President As of me and you.
Bound tightly there in the cradle, Alone in a darkened roomThoughts of the terrible ghosts, I don’t blame the other infants If they cry to go to bed (They become thirsty at times).
In the morning - I remember wellI was in good spirits.
The reason was, they took care of me, No one was a bit tired.
Until evening it was quite different, “I put the naughty fellow in his nestNow he may just sleep.”
And buys ice cream and candy, A new buggy, a swift horseWhoever doesn’t have that, gets the sack, And that’s not very nice.

Over a year ago, our friend, H. Martin Lausch, of East Main Street in Effredaa sent us an old clipping of WIE ICH EN GLEE BOBBELI WAAR and a note telling us he came upon the clipping in the papers of his sister, Kathryn R. Lausch. Martin points out that the poem was printed in the Ephrata paper or the Denver Press before 1920. This he established by pointing out the church news notes printed on the reverse side of the clipping, where the late Rev. B. G. Welder was conducting communion services at the Muddy Creek Lutheran Church.
We’ve checked into the anthology of Harry Hess Reichard but found no Dutch poem by this title. So we again must call upon our older readers with the best memories. Who was the poet writing under the assumed name of “Pit Z. Schweffelbrenner, Jr., M.D.?”
It is clear that this poem was written by someone who had excellent mastery of the vocabulary and the grammar of our beloved MUDDERSCHPROOCH. The first nine verses are devoted to the period when the poet was EN GLEE BOBBELI, but suddenly and conclusively he switches to the period of courtship and ends the poem abruptly there. That is the only serious flaw in this delightful Dutch poem. One gets the impression that the poet could think of no other appropriate ending. He could have ended the poem with verse 9, but that would not have been a satisfactory solution either.
If any of our readers come upon favorite Dutch poems or stories, please share them with us by mailing them to the editor of this column.
This week we salute H. Martin Lausch graad uff die Meen Schtrooss in Effredaa!

The Friendly Circle held their October meeting on Tuesday, October 8 at Akron Community Church. Vice President Charlotte Putt welcomed everyone and conducted the meeting. Jerry and Mary Reinhold greeted 57 members to the meeting.

16,
“Pledge of Allegiance” and “God Bless America.” They also sang, “Blest Be the Tie That Binds” and “Smile,” accompanied by Gladys Horvath on the piano.
The devotional speaker was Pastor Jim Goodyear from Bergstrasse Lutheran Church on the Hill in East Ephrata. Pastor Jim started out asking the members what is worrying or on their minds this day. Some said they were worried about the hurricane that is headed to Florida because they have family in path of the hurricane. He asked how
God prepares us for hurricanes? Lots answered with prayer and helping one another. Prayer brings people together and we use our words and hands to help each other. Everyone experiences hurricanes in their lives at times, and that is when they pray and look to neighbors for help. In the Evangelical Lutheran Church, they have a tagline, “God’s Work, Our Hands” that encapsulates the ELCA’s emphasis on actively serving others through their actions, signifying that their work in the world is “God’s work” carried out through “our
hands.” God instills in their hearts to serve their neighbors. Sometimes they feel they don’t need help, but they must be present and be willing to receive help. Welcome neighbors with open arms. The minute you were born, you were born for love and to be in relation with each other. Can you see the image of God in a stranger’s face? It gives people courage to help one another. Where have you seen God’s work in your life? New life, new birth shows up in the face of hurricanes. Pastor Jim also gave the prayer and blessing before the meal.
played “Oh When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Ain’t She Sweet,” “Good Bye Joe We gotta Go,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Folsom Prision Blues,” “You Are My Sunshine,” “Hey Good Lookin’,” “This Little Light of Mine” and “Beautiful Dreamer.” He estimates he takes about 6,000 steps as he plays.

(The way up is down)
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Psalm 138:6“For the Lord is exalted, yet He looks after the lowly, but He knows the haughty from afar.”
Last week, we saw that pride has no place in the life of the Christian. Our verse says God looks after the lowly or humble. The verse concludes with this statement, “But He knows the haughty from afar.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t want God to be afar off, not today. Today I want Him to be very close. The Psalmist says, “There are six things the Lord hates, seven are an abomination to him.” Guess what is number one on the list? “A proud look” (Proverbs 6:16-19). It’s
never a good idea to do what God hates.
The Bible says in James 4:6, “But He gives more grace. Therefore, He says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Frequently, these terms are being used to speak of believer vs. unbeliever (humble/proud). But, as a believer, we too can fall prey as well, and must forsake any form of pride as soon as we see it in our life. The New Testament instruction for a leader is that they, “Should not be a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil” (1st Timothy 3:6). Conceited means to be excessively proud of oneself. If a person is elevated into a leadership position within the church as a new believer, it’s a high probability they will lack the maturity and humility to handle the responsibility and become proud. Pride in the body of Christ is very destructive and divisive. Pride breeds contention. It always works against all that God does. Humility serves others;
pride seeks to be served. Humility will forgive and overlook hurts; pride will magnify hurts, and demand apology. Humility sees others as better; pride sees self as better. Humility doesn’t brag; pride can’t stop bragging. Humility is kind and patient; pride is impatient and demanding. Pride is the slippery slope; once you start down that path, you will certainly fall.
The Bible says, “Pride goes before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). We are commanded to, “Not think more highly of ourselves than we ought” (Romans 12:3).
One way to be humble is to realize there is no difference between Christians and the unsaved other than, we are forgiven. We are just saved sinners. “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works lest any boast” (Ephesians 2:89). It’s all by grace, nothing is earned. So, we don’t deserve salvation, we don’t earn salvation, and we can’t keep it by works.
Another path to humility is to realize that we don’t live
a life that pleases God by trying harder, adding more discipline or by working smarter. That’s not to say these attributes never matter, but Paul said it this way. “When I am weak, then am I strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). It’s not to say we bear no responsibility for our life choices, disciplines or outcome. It’s to say that we understand it is “Christ in you” that we need to depend wholly on Him and not the arm of the flesh. Paul didn’t depend on his abilities. That’s not to say don’t develop them. It is to say, don’t depend on them. It’s so easy to think we are better than we actually are. In humility, we need to totally depend on Christ. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
Forsake any pride that we may harbor. Pride will damage relationships in and out of the church. Pride always causes a fall. Pride should have no place in our lives because we didn’t earn any of it. It’s all by grace, and grace is unmerited favor. Kick pride to the curb.

* On October 14, 1957, The Everly Brothers scored their first No. 1 hit on the Billboard charts with “Wake Up, Little Susie.” Though the lyrics described a perfectly innocent scenario, the song still managed to stir up enough controversy to get it banned in Boston for a time.
* On October 15, 2004, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ruled that hearse manufacturers would no longer be required to install anchors for childsafety seats in their vehicles, though the rare models that contain rear seats are not technically “funeral coaches” and are therefore subject to the same childrestraint rules as other carmakers.
* On October 16, 1991, George Jo Hennard drove
his truck through a Luby’s Cafeteria window in Killeen, Texas, before opening fire on a lunch crowd of more than 100, killing 23 and injuring 20 more. He was shot several times by police before fatally turning the gun on himself. No
clear reason for one of the deadliest shootings in U.S. history was ever determined.
* On October 17, 1835, Texans approved a resolution to create the Texas Rangers, a corps of armed and mounted lawmen designed to “range and guard the frontier between the Brazos and Trinity Rivers.”
* On October 18, 1977, New York Yankees outfielder Reggie Jackson hit three home runs in a row off of three consecutive pitches from three different pitchers a feat only Babe Ruth had ever previously pulled off in the sixth game of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Nathan Smoker 8th Grade
If someone wants to find Nathan, there is a good chance they would find him doing something musical. Nathan is in 8th grade at Hinkletown Mennonite School and attends church at The Living Room. Nathan’s parents are Ted and Julie Smoker, and he has five siblings. He has a cat named Persephone, and his favorite color is green. However, his favorite thing to do is play music.
Nathan grew up in Guatemala with his family for seven years, which is where he gained his love for music. He left the United States when he was five with his parents and two siblings at the time. They went with the organization Eastern Mennonite Missions in hopes to help the indigenous people. When they settled in Guatemala, they served by helping the local people with the work on their farms and also helped them build churches. Being around the indigenous people on a daily basis, he learned to love their music, which sparked his interest in music.
Nathan is involved in multiple music groups inside the school. He participates in the worship team and the percussion ensemble. He first joined the worship team in sixth grade and has been playing the piano with the team ever since. They perform songs during chapel every other Wednesday for the middle school. Also, in sixth grade, he joined the percussion ensemble. In the ensemble, he plays multiple instruments, and some of the instruments include the triangle, cymbals, and drums. He performs with the ensemble at school programs and performances at other schools. Doing all these musical activities, he always has something to look forward to throughout the week.
Even though Nathan is not sure what career he wants to pursue, he knows that he will use his musical talents to glorify Christ Jesus.
Jasmine Munoz
Jasmine Munoz is starting her first year at Ephrata Mennonite in tenth grade. Her favorite class this year is history class, because you often learn different things that you wouldn’t usually hear talked about in everyday life. She also takes art, which she says is fun and a good place to unwind after a long day of school. Her favorite part about school is that she is able to be with her friends all the time.
When asked about someone that she looks up to, she said Ashley Munoz, her mom. Her mom works hard for Jasmine and her three siblings, and tries to make time for them as well.
Some of Jasmine’s hobbies include things like reading, playing volleyball, listening to music, and playing with her puppies. She also attends Way of the Cross Christian Fellowship. After school, Jasmine hopes to go to college, but is unsure of what she wants to do.
Written by: Marissa Oberholtzer
One thing that Jasmine says she would change about the world is that every child would have a loving home. Over all, Jasmine is a very sweet, outgoing girl, and she feels that she is adjusting to school very well and has had a great start already.
