Friendly Circle Meeting
The Friendly Circle held its October meeting on Tuesday, October 11 at Akron Church of the Brethren. President John Rice welcomed everyone. Charlotte Putt and Shirley Sweigart greeted 63 members and three guests.
The theme song, “The More We Get Together” was sung followed by “The Pledge of Allegiance” and “God Bless America” with Gladys Horvath accompanying on the piano. They also sang, “This Is My Father’s House,” “We’ll Never Walk Alone,” and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” as a round by table led by Gladys, which was enjoyed by everyone.
Pastor Jeff Martin from Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church, Brownstown, was the Meditation speaker. Pastor Jeff started by asking the question, “What would you say is the good life? By how long you live, how much money you have to buy and do lots of things, a loving marriage and family life?
Another answer would be to be aware of God and His plan for us. We are God’s masterpiece there is no other persons in history like you.
God knew all about us before we were even born
and has a plan for us. We are all capable of making mistakes that impact us, so we need to ask God to give us wisdom to deal with whatever He planned for us.” Pastor Jeff led them in prayer and also blessed the meal.
After the delicious meal prepared by the kitchen committee, they were entertained by “The Chestnuts,” a duo of Tom Chestnut, from Manheim, and Jack Chestnut, from Mount Joy. They have been singing together for over 20 years. They played guitar
and harmonica, singing songs from Johnny Cash, Elvis, George Strait, Kenny Rogers and others. They sang “Country Roads,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Love Is a Burning Thing,” “Momma Don’t Dance and Daddy Don’t Rock and Roll,” “Dance With You” and “Blue Suede Shoes.” They had people up and dancing and asked members to give requests and sing along. They ended with “America the Beautiful” and “Happy Trails to You,” having everyone sing along.
Pat Bunting led the singing
of six October Birthday’s.
Libby Rupp read the minutes from September and Debbie Moyer gave the Treasurer’s report.
The Gerharts reported sending get well cards and asked members to notify them if they know of any members hospitalized or sick.
Linda Fahnestock reminded members about the upcoming trip to Hunterdon Hills on Tuesday, November 15.
President John Rice asked veterans to be at November’s meeting by 11:00 a.m. so
pictures can be taken for the newspapers.
The meeting was adjourned with the singing of the “Doxology.”

A spectral soldier from the revolution rides across the hills of Chester County. The onetime fiancée of our only bachelor president stares out the window of a mansion northeast of Lancaster. A coal miner’s restless spirit refuses to stay in his coffin. Pennsylvania was at the center of many of our nations’ early military and political struggles. Passions ran high and many lives were lost. So, it is no surprise that Pennsylvania is the setting for many stories of restless souls cut down in the fullness of life whose spirits still haunt the old homes and battlegrounds that are the backdrop for our modern lives. For more than 30 years storyteller, Bill Wood, has been delving into the lore and legends of Eastern Pennsylvania. We had an Italian Friend who used to visit us. He was called “Good-a-bye John.” He played the accordion. When he had completed his meal, he went up to the hotel, stood on the steps and played energetically. He played all kinds of pieces, Christian, Christmas songs, worldly, country songs, and so on. Then one of the boys came around with a “Glingelsack” (a small bag with a bell on it attached to a long handle). This produced a few cents. When he was finished, he would call out “Good-a-bye John!” This is how he came by his name.

No hen mir die Schtrooss nuffgeguckt. Mir hen ebbes ungewehnliches gsehne. “Well, was is sell?” hen mir gfrogt. Es guckt wie en Haufe Balle. Es is am Ziege. Sis ken Mann, sis zu nidder. Sis ken Esel, sis net lang genunk. “Well, was is es? - Es kummt neecher.” Well, bei Galli, sis en gleener Mann datt unnich en Haffe. Then we looked up the road. We saw something unusual. “Well, what is that?” we asked. It looks like a pile of balls. It’s moving. It’s no man, it’s too low. It’s no donkey, it’s not long enough. “Well, what is it? - It’s coming nearer.” Well, by golly, it’s a little man there under a pot. I see his eyeballs. Oh, yes, I know him. It’s little “Dusty Miller,” the knife sharpener. I recognized him by his wonderfully long overcoat. Wrapped in clothes and equipment in small packs as round as balls. He came for an egg sandwich and a cup of coffee. When he was still there, big “Jeck” Gehman came by. He also liked egg sandwiches, coffee, cake and shoofly pie. They sat on a bench and talked about old times. Now they are all gone to their eternal reward. May God love their souls.
Wann mei Mudder noch do waer, daed sie mich bedanke fer so schee schreiwe iwwer die Engel as unverhofft beikumme sin mit ihre gflickde Gleeder, fer en Beiss zu esse, en Glaas Wasser un freindliche Wadde. If my mother were still here, she would thank me for writing in praise of the unknown angels who come in their mended clothing, asking for a bite to eat, a glass of water and a friendly word. God loves them all. Many of those fellows took their hat off, bowed their head and were thankful for their good fortune. If my mother were yet here, I would say, “Mom, I have learned the value of things folks term insignificant. Such things as a glass of water, a piece of bread, an embrace, a kind word, a warm heart and a few tears when one is depressed. No, Mom, there is no such thing as a small (unimportant) matter.”

This ECK has presented the last in a series of Dutch tramp tales and dialect observations from the pen of Dave Hornberger of Ephrata. Now that we have stirred Dave up, we are hopeful that he will continue to share his memories and reflections with us from time to time. We are also hopeful that he will inspire others to go and do likewise. Again unser Deitscher Schtrohhut is raised in salute to this stalwart member of the Hornberger clan!

Can God Forget?
by Pastor Ricky Kurth“And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more” (Heb. 10:17).
We know that God forgives the sins of His people, but does He forget them? It would seem so. Our text suggests that He “will not remember” the sins committed against Him by His children (Isa. 43:25). Believers have always found
a great deal of comfort in this blessed thought.
But then God calls upon us to likewise forgive others “even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Eph. 4:32). Doesn’t this suggest that we too should forgive and forget? Perhaps you are thinking, “But Pastor, you don’t know what they did to me!” True, but was it more than what was done to God when men crucified His Son?
Remember, God’s vow to forgive and forget the sins of His people includes even the brutal murder of His only begotten Son. We are tempted to think, “Well, it’s easy for God to forget,” but such is not the case. God says
of the sins of unbelievers that He “will NEVER forget ANY of their works” (Amos 8:7). How then can this God of “total recall” forget our sins? Does His memory
have a convenient “on/off” switch that makes it easy for Him to forgive and forget? If so, then we who do not have such a switch would have an excuse for forgiving but
not forgetting. But if God has such a switch, would He not also have to erase His memory of Calvary, or else forever wonder why His Son had to die? But it cannot be that God could forget the Cross, for Revelation 5:6 joins John 20:27 to reveal that the Lord’s resurrection body will forever bear the scars of the Cross, making it impossible for God— or us—to ever forget His sacrifice for our sins.
What then is the answer to our question? Can God forget our sins? Perhaps the reader has noticed that we never read that God will forget the sins of His people, but rather that He “will not remember” them. By a deliberate act of His “will”
He chooses to act toward us AS IF He has forgotten our sins, on the basis of the blood of the Cross. That’s how fully and completely He has forgiven our sins. And if we are to forgive others “as” God forgave us, then we too must choose to act toward others as if we have so fully forgiven their transgressions against us that we have forgotten them—also on the basis of Christ’s shed blood. This and this alone is complete forgiveness of others, and it is high spiritual ground indeed.
May God help us to live with a slate wiped clean of “all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking… with all malice” (Eph. 4:31).

Faith
Methodist Celebrates 150th Year
“And though your beginning was small, your latter days will be very great.”- Job 8:7
Faith United Methodist Church of Ephrata started small. A small group of people from “Classes” of Ranck’s, New Holland and Hinkletown Church planted a seed in Ephrata in the spring of 1872. Their beginning was small but their latter days were great. This year of the Lord Jesus Christ 2022, they celebrate the 150th anniversary of the First United Methodist Church of Ephrata. This happened simply because a small group of people, “the founders,” felt the call of mission to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Ephrata community. They can’t count how many souls they reached out to and
discipled and commissioned for their mission, bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Ephrata and beyond.
But, the church can’t be content with celebrating their rich heritage. They must engage with the future. They see their future is not the yellow brick road, but it is the rugged and challenging road. Would you set off on this new journey? Or should you take an easy path content with the status quo? If they believe they do, they better stay where they are, but if they believe God does church, they can set off their new journey with confidence and trust in the Lord. Let them look back to see the paths First Church took. It reminds them of the hymn, “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” In verse 2, it says, “Here I raise mine Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’m come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.”
Ebenezer, “The Rock of
Help” was the mark Samuel set up to remember God’s help for their great victory over the Philistines. The 150th Anniversary is their Ebenezer, the mark to remember the constant and faithful help of God for the First Church of Ephrata.
Like people see many enemies and challenges before them, their predecessors saw their Philistines, but they marched and battled against their foes with faith and courage.
Their eyes see the stormy ocean and rugged road in front of them, but their faith sees the peaceful port beyond the storm where they will arrive eventually. So, celebrate the promised victory. Worship Christ Jesus who keeps calling people for His mission. Glorify the Lord God who was and is and is to come.
Please come and join them for their Anniversary Worship Service at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 30 at 68 North Church Street, Ephrata.

Keohane, and Cadet Senior Master Sergeant Slater J. Shannon following their promotions recently at the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meeting at Lancaster Municipal Airport. Adam E. Showers (1878-1962)Spanish-American War Veteran
A new display at the Lititz Museum combines two recent donations. When the Spanish-American War broke out, Adam Showers enlisted in the regular army at the Lancaster recruiting office. After training at the Presidio, he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Regiment and sent to the Philippines, where he served from 1899 to 1902. During the Boxer Rebellion, his regiment formed part of the American
force in the China Relief Expedition. He returned to Lititz in 1902. The objects in this photograph show some of his personal items from those years (the campaign hat, khaki trousers and leggings), his service medals for service in the Philippines
BOOK
and China, and two photographs of him in the Far East. The smallest of the three photographs was taken in 1927 in Lititz showing him in uniform wearing the campaign medals.
The Lititz Historical Foundation opens for the
2022 season on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. during April and May, and full-time after Memorial Day from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 717-6274636.

Bill Lesher of Ephrata celebrated a rather special birthday on Thursday, October 6, as he turned 100 years old! Bill was born in 1922 in Lititz and grew up in Lexington just up the road. Bill married his wife Minerva Witmyer, who passed away in 1987. They raised two boys, Glenn and
Larry, and he also has four grandchildren.
He joined the military six days before Christmas in 1942 and served as an infantry engineer building bridges and clearing mine fields. He later joined the Air Force in 1946. Bill’s time in the service included
travels to Italy, North Africa, southern France, Germany and Austria. He made a living locally as a third generation painter for over 30 years. Churches made up a significant portion of his work.
Bill had four brothers and
three sisters. His one brother is 92, and two of his sisters are in their 80s. He also has an aunt who is over 100.
The thing Bill says he appreciates the most is his good neighbors and family who help him get around. One memory that stands out to him was hearing that Hitler committed suicide and the war was over!
His secret to longevity is to eat what you want, and be a little lucky. Friends and family held a party in his honor at the United Methodist Church in Schoeneck.

* A Tip From JoAnn: I like bottled water, but it’s expensive and creates a lot of waste. I have plenty of reusable bottles, but bottled water always seemed more convenient and, frankly, better. I found that what I really like is to take a bottle of very cold water out of the fridge and drink it, so instead of storing those reusable bottles in the cabinet, I fill them straight from the dishwasher and put them in the fridge. Now I have the convenience of bottled water without spending the money, and I happily am not creating waste.
* To remove stubborn contact paper from kitchen
shelves, use a hair dryer set on low to loosen the adhesive. Peel away slowly.
* Here’s a trick for removing hard-water stains on windows or glass doors: Apply full-strength fabric softener to surface. Let dry, then use a wet cloth to remove, rinsing the cloth frequently.
* “Hang a bag of clothes pins near the laundry basket. Then if something has a stain that needs to be addressed, put a clip on it before adding it to the basket. This way, you’ll know what to pretreat on wash day.” -- D.W. in Washington
* “To keep pants on a hanger from creasing, I slit a paper towel cardboard roll and slip it over the hanger. I tape it together and then put the pants over it. This has worked for me for many years.” -- I.R. in Nebraska
* Got a grease stain on your shirt? Cover it with baking soda right away. The baking soda will absorb oil. Repeat several times and launder as quickly as you can.
* Necklace chains that have turned dark due to oils in your skin can be washed in warm water with a dab of shampoo mixed in. Also, keep your old earring backs -- they might fit a different pair if one gets lost! -- M.F. in Washington
* To clean the glass inside your oven door, use the stovetop cleaner for your glass stovetop. -- V.P. in Florida

Burkholder
Hinkletown Mennonite
Natalie Burkholder 8th Grade
According to some of Natalie’s friends, she is friendly and always smiling. Natalie Burkholder is in 8th grade at Hinkletown Mennonite School. Her parents are Durrel and Christine, and she has three siblings. Her family goes to Dove Gateway church. Natalie works at Yoder’s, and in her free time, she enjoys playing soccer and drawing. After 8th grade, Natalie will be going to Garden Spot for high school and plans on taking a CTC class so she can help her dad, a mechanic, and make money for college. Natalie plans on going to college to become a pediatric surgeon.
Natalie has always had an interest in the medical field. From a young age, Natalie has been interested in medicine. She learned from her friend’s mom who drove an ambulance, as well as looks up to her aunts for inspiration, as most of them have a medical degree. She also grew up helping her mom care for her siblings and has memories of those times. She does not hope to jump right up to becoming a surgeon though, and will most likely become a RN, then a doctor, then on up to a pediatric surgeon.
Though it’s still a long way off, she definitely has a plan on how to get to her dream job. Natalie is hard working and enjoys spending time with her friends.
Lane Stoltzfus
11th Grade
Lane is a Junior at Ephrata Mennonite School and has attended there since Kindergarten. His laid back personality allows him to make friends easily.
Lane is currently taking chemistry and statistics to name a few. He is also involved in multiple extracurricular activities, such as soccer and basketball. He plays goalie in soccer and center in basketball.
Aside from sports, he sings in the Ministry Arts Team and is also president of StuCo, and carries quite a few responsibilities along with that title.
When Lane was nine years old, his family opened their house and adopted twins from Haiti that were only eight years old.
He currently attends Cornerstone Mennonite Fellowship. He enjoys hanging out with his youth group and school friends on the weekend. He is currently working for his uncle at Legacy Door Company. Lane said he would definitely consider working for him after high school.
Written by: Thomas MartinHe’s not really about that frat boy lifestyle. On Sunday afternoons, you can find Lane along with his favorite bag of cheddar Sunchips, cheering on the Eagles.
