Annual Holiday Train Show

The Short Line Model Railroad Club, located at 11 South State Street, Ephrata, will hold its annual Holiday Train Show every Saturday and Sunday from November 25 through January 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The entrance to the exhibit is located in the rear of the building. This wonderful family event is free and open to the public; however, a donation to the club is appreciated. Guests to the train show will enjoy seeing miniature trains rolling though very detailed scenery, repre sentative of northeastern Pennsylvania, on more than 900 feet of double-tracked mainline, and a 75-foot, single-tracked branch line. Many of the model loco motives feature realistic steam and diesel sounds and are controlled by wireless digital controllers. Visitors will be taken back to the days when coal was king, and the railroads were starting to switch to more modern diesel power while still running steam loco motives. All phases of various types of layout construction are on display. Members of the club will be available during showtimes to discuss the train exhibit and answer questions. The Short Line Model Railroad Club is open to new members. If you are inter ested in joining, ask any member for more infor mation. The club is a great way for model railroad enthusiasts who don’t have their own trains or room for them, to participate in an enjoyable hobby with others.

On the inside I’m boiling. “Just wait,” I think, “in four weeks. Then I’m really going to shock you, With a lacquered chives cut. As red as a rooster’s comb. Now you have your rooster - that’s it! Look, Andoon is (your slim boy), Just for a change a rock and roller!” Above all a rooster must Keep his chickens entertained! *** Our Fourth of July holiday was brightened by the arrival of a letter from the Kulturamt (Cultural Office) of the City of Eberbach, which lies on the Neckar River in West Germany, and is the Sister City to Ephrata. The envelope contained Xerox copies of the poems in the Eberbach dialect which had been written and printed in the past 12 months in the EBERBACHER STADTNACHRICHTEN by Anton Veith, whose nom de plume is “Andoon.” In the spring of 1984, my wife and I had the pleasure of spending a weekend in Eberbach visiting the Moray, Schlesinger and Schmitt families. At the home of Buergermeister Schlesinger, we met Anton Veith, the leading dialect poet of Eberbach. Later “Andoon” invited us to his home, where we had a delightful visit. Since our visit to Eberbach, the Stadtverwaltung (city administration) of Eberbach has been sending us copies of “Andoon’s” Eberbacher poems. We chose “Beim Hoorschneider” for this ECK because so many of “Andoon’s” words are familiar in unser Mudderschprooch. This week we salute mit dem Deitscher Schtrohhut Bruder Andoon and all our friends in Eberbach!!! October 15, 1986 Bischli-Gnippli, net weit vum Kanneschtoge

Good Samaritan Services Holds Ribbon Cutting And Open House Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Good Samaritan Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to responding to homelessness and poverty, celebrated the opening of their new office building in Ephrata with a ribbon cutting and open house on Tuesday, November 14. During a ceremony lead by the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Comm erce, over 50 supporters from the community joined the organization’s staff onsite to celebrate and tour the new facilities. The recently completed office building is a singlestory structure spanning 2,200 square feet. Situated on West Locust Street, Ephrata, the standalone facility was built on land formerly owned by Good Samaritan Services. This new space is designed to meet the organization’s growing needs, offering office and meeting spaces for staff to provide case management, a dedicated counseling room, and a versatile multipurpose room. The organization is excited that the additional space will enhance their ability to provide services to individuals and families in their program who are experiencing a housing

crisis. “We’re here to celebrate our new building today, but we’re really here to celebrate our wonderful staff that will be inhabiting this space, who every single day, will be meeting faceto-face with a tremendous amount of compassion for the participants in our program,” said Nate Hoffer, Chief Executive Officer of Good Samaritan Services. Good Samaritan Services expressed their gratitude to the wide support they received from the comm unity that made the expan sion possible with special recognition to Heck Con

struction, the project’s general contractor, for bringing the project to life. Good Samaritan Services compassionately responds to homelessness and poverty through a unique and personalized approach to empower individuals and families in their journey from crisis to stability. Serving over 600 men, women, and children annually across Lancaster and Chester Counties, their vision is to see and serve all who may be overlooked. Good Samaritan’s compre hensive program allows the organization to serve those experiencing street home lessness, those who are at

Biblical Message Possessing Our Inheritance Author: Wenger Psalm 44:3 - “For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword. Nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm and the light of your presence, for you favored them.” There are many illus trations in scripture that demonstrate God and God alone delivers…we can’t. This has never changed. God promised to give Israel possession of a land flowing

with milk and honey. He would go before them to protect, deliver and give them victory. God desires and expects that we depend on Him and not our own strength. As God works with individuals, nations and the world in general, one lesson is abundantly clear… He and He alone is able to deliver and He and He alone deserves the glory. Let’s examine a few of the illustrations from scripture. The Red Sea experience - (Exodus 13:17-18). Just think of it - the Hebrew children had barely left Egypt and now Pharaoh and his armies are in pursuit. These great people (about 2 million) whom God delivered from Pharaoh

in Egypt are now trapped with the Red Sea in front and approaching troops in the rear. They already knew how it went back in Egypt when Pharaoh took away the straw to make bricks and

demanded the quota remain the same. Imagine what they thought…all of this was for nothing…should have stayed in Egypt…our families will be slaughtered…some God we have, we told you

Lord delivered them into the hands of Midian for seven years.” Because of sin, God delivered them into the Midianites hands and now when they cried out to Him, He delivers them out of the Midianites hand. Gideon was to defeat the Midianites with just a handful of people…the odds were to be impossible. Judges 7:2 God declares: “The people who are with you are too many (32,000) for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying; My own hand has saved me.” The Midianite troops numbered 135,000. this would happen when we were still in Egypt, we should have stayed in Egypt. God delivered them in a marvelous way, parting the waters and they passed through the Red Sea on dry land. After they crossed over and Pharaoh and his armies perished into the midst of the seabed, God brought the waters down on them and they were all drowned…not one escaped. Gideon’s experience - God told the Hebrew children to possess the land and not to fear the people or worship their gods. Frequently, we see God delivering His people because of their unbelief and disobedience. In Judges 6 it states, “Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, so the

dependence on Him and obedience to Him. So Gideon said to his armies, anyone who is afraid, you can leave…22,000 cowards departed. God said, “you still have too many.” Then Gideon eliminated 9,700 incompetent - those who lapped the water while drinking at the stream. That left 300 committed. With 300 Israelites, God gave them victory over 135,000 Midianites (Judges chapters 6, 7, 8). So, how does this apply to us? Zechariah 4:6 - “Not by might nor by power but by my spirit says the lord.” 2 Corinthians 12:10 states, “When I am weak then am I strong.” Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Gideon was outnumbered 400 to 1. The odds are about the same for the believer today. We must totally depend on the Lord our God. We cannot depend upon ourselves to live a life of victory, possessing what God has for us. It’s not just let go and let God either, there is a balance as with all doctrine. Proverbs 21:31 - “The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but deliverance is from the Lord.”

* On November 27, 2017, eight donkeys were released from jail after four days’ imprisonment for the crime of eating expensive saplings in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Authorities said the animals had made a mess of the plants, which were worth nearly $1,000 and placed near the jail as part of a governmental cleanup campaign, even after their owner was “warned a couple of times.” * On November 28, 1920, 36 volunteers for the Irish Republican Army ambushed the Royal Irish Consta bulary’s Auxiliary near Kilmichael in County Cork, killing 16 soldiers. The attack occurred one week after “Bloody Sunday” and marked an escalation in the IRA’s campaign during the Irish War of Independence. * On November 29, 1877, with very little preamble, a young Thomas Edison demonstrated his handcranked phonograph for the first time at the office of the “Scientific American.” The

editors were astonished to hear the machine say: “Good morning. How do you do? How do you like the phonograph?” Edison patented the device a few months later. * On November 30, 2022, Russia’s upper house of Parliament unanimously voted against promoting homosexual relationships in advertising, books and films, assigning a fine of up to 5 million rubles (approxi mately $80,000) to anyone caught violating the ban. * On December 1, 1960, Paul McCartney and original Beatles drummer Pete Best were arrested in Hamburg, Germany, and deported from the country on the mistaken accusation of attempted arson. The men were given just five minutes to pack their belongings, and Best even had to leave his drums behind. * On December 2, 1777, legend holds that a Philadelphia housewife and nurse by the name of Lydia Darragh helped save the lives of Gen. George Washington and his Con tinental Army when she overheard British soldiers planning a surprise attack on

Sold-Out Crowd Cheers Hometown Teams In District Title Match

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Friday night saw a sold-out Eagle Stadium abuzz with hundreds of excited football fans who turned out to watch Cocalico and Ephrata battle for the District Three Class 5A crown. The Mountaineers had an incredible year under coach Kris Miller, as did the Eagles under the leadership of head coach Bryan Strohl. In the end, the Eagles claimed victory with a final score of 23-9. The win Friday by Cocalico makes it their second straight 5A crown. The Eagles advance to the state 5A semifinals, slated to play Peters Township this coming weekend. Both teams have inspired the community and fellow students with their determination and hard work, and fans will remember this season as one for the record books. Shown are the Cocalico players celebrating with the trophy and the placard marking this momentous accomplishment. Congratulations to both teams on their achievements.

Tom Burnett got the idea for the event and asked the Pilgrims Mennonite Leader ship Team for their approval of the activity. “We decided it would be a fun event to hold in the Akron/Ephrata area to bring people together, by enjoying the luminary walk, caroling and refreshments during the holiday season.” People from the church were enthusiastic with the idea and they soon recruited

volunteers from ages 14 through 75. Some other local churches are helping Pilgrims Men nonite by volunteering in various ways. Burnett said that after this first program, he hopes that even more churches will become involved in the future. People are asked to park in the lot by Pavilion I, near the playground. There, volun teers will tell individuals where to walk, as they have options to walk ¼ mile, ½ mile or any other distance one wishes. Flashlights are recommended to take along. A rain date is planned for Saturday, December 16.

Finally, witness the Magi as they discuss whether to leave the comfort of their home and risk everything to see the newborn King. Registration is online with some walk-in spaces available.
