Mary Jane (Henly) Wechter

A soft-spoken, yet bright and devoted advocate for equality and charity, Mary Jane (Henly) Wechter, 93, passed away early Monday morning, November 27th, 2023, at Moravian Manor, Lititz, PA. She was the loving wife of the late Robert L. Wechter, sharing 64 years of marriage. Born in a farmhouse on Stevens Rd., Stevens, PA, on July 10, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Jacob H. and Elva (Royer) Henly. Mary Jane cherished her memories of life growing up on a farm. The family later moved to a farmette in Ephrata during her teenage years. She excelled in academics, graduating at the top of her class from Ephrata High School in 1947. Postgraduation, Mary Jane worked at Ephrata National Bank. She married Robert on May 26th, 1951, and during his US Air Force service, they lived in Springfield, Ohio where she worked for a mortgage company. Returning to Ephrata in 1954, they eventually settled into their new house in Akron, PA on Christmas Eve 1955, with their two-month-old twins, Diane and Rita. Later they

welcomed son George and daughter Karen. Mary Jane’s vocational life was diverse. She served as a bookkeeper for Lancaster Association for Retarded Citizens and was a licensed real estate agent. Her volunteerism extended to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley and Girl Scouts. She actively supported Native American, wildlife, environmental and education causes, and organizations combating homelessness, poverty and disease.

A dedicated member of Salem Lutheran Church, Ephrata, Mary Jane served as associate organist and choir member for 40 years. Her involvement included the Lutheran Church Women, Social Ministry and Worship and Music committees. She was especially devoted to coordinating the annual comfort-making project for Lutheran World Relief. Mary Jane was a committed and supportive mother and grandmother. She loved to play table games with her family, and could regularly be found in her folding chair on the third base line at her grandsons’ baseball games. She spent many happy times with family, extended family, church family, and friends at her and Robert’s Mt. Gretna cottage. Her hobbies included collecting stamps, coins, souvenir plates, historical publications, and vintage dishes and linens. She loved music and had a particular fondness for big bands and crooners like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. She loved to laugh at silly humor, starting her day with the morning comics and ending it with a sit-com and Johnny Carson. She liked chicken pot pie, root beer floats and coffee milkshakes.

Mary Jane and Robert’s love for travel took them across the United States and the world, often accompanied by family. They cherished their annual trips to Ocean City, New Jersey with children and grandsons. Mary Jane was also renowned for her cooking and baking, especially her corn, shoofly and pumpkin pies. She is survived by her children Diane Wechter, Rita Wechter (Timothy Byers), and Karen (Michael) Lowrie, along with three grandchildren, Mark, Robert, and Paul Lowrie, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son George, and brothers Norman and Clarence Henly. The family expresses gratitude for the caring nurses and staff at Moravian Manor, and for Masonic Village Hospice for their assistance in her care in her final month. A viewing and visitation

was held on Saturday, December 2nd at Salem Lutheran Church, 1331 W. Main St., Ephrata, PA, followed by the funeral service at 10:30AM, and burial immediately thereafter at Mellinger’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Schoeneck, PA. Memorial contributions can be made to Salem Lutheran Church, Ephrata Public Library, Historical Society of Cocalico Valley, Care International or St. Joseph’s Indian School. gravenor sipler funeral & cremation centre, inc.

There were three trouts in a hole. Two small ones and a large one. The big one, I think, was the mother of the two small ones. At any rate, she took care of them like a mother tends her children. When I came to the hole, they shot about like lightning. I sat behind a log and waited until they had settled down, then I threw my fly onto the water. One of the little ones suddenly came up to catch my fly, but she missed it. Now a fly is nothing but a few chicken feathers tied to a fishhook so that it looks like a fat, old bluebottle fly. Nothing good to eat for a fish, but they look nice. I threw my line in again and the old mother came up, looked at the fly, and then went back nicely and sat next to her children. She saw that it was not only a humbug, but she also knew from experience that it’s a dangerous business to fool around with that fly, and I saw her give her children a lecture. I expect she warned them and explained to them how easily they can get into trouble if they didn’t keep their fingers away. They listened to her with such respect that I believed I would be unable to catch any of them. I threw my line in again and none of them stirred. Then I tied a fly to my line that looked like a bee. That excited the little fish and they wanted to get at it with all their might, but the old fish was now sure that it was a hoax and she swam about above her children and shook her fins as if she were very excited. I saw the children argue with their mother as if they knew better, as if it would be a shame to let such a big, fat bee full of honey get away at any rate it would be a shame not to try “if it doesn’t help, it won’t do any harm.” After a bit, the old mother looked the other way and as quick as a flash, one of the small fish shot upwards and the next minute it was in my basket. The old trout carried on like a mad bulldog, but I threw my line back in and in a short while the second little fish came up and I cut open its

mouth, but I didn’t catch it. The mother was sad. One child was dead and the other crippled, just because they thought they knew better than their mother. Oh, here was a lesson. Young girls are like trout. They look for flies. Their mother says, “Watch out, that fellow is goodfornothing. His feathers are beautiful, but he has a heart of steel. He just wants to catch you. There is danger there, and ‘he who places himself in danger is destroyed by it.’ Now listen let him go!” “Oh, mother,” the girls say, “he’s as handsome as an angel and as sweet as honey. There can be nothing wrong with flirting a bit with him on the street. You are too particular,” and while the mother is sleeping, they take the bait (hook). Even if they are not caught, they are nonetheless crippled and their lives end with trouble and sorrow. Watch out for the man who wears beautiful feathers to cover up a heart of steel. *** DIE MAED SIN WIE GLEENE FISCH by Boonastiel we located in a 1942 edition to his (Thomas Hess Harter) “Pennsylvania ‘Dutch’ Letters,” which were reprinted in 1942 in Harrisburg by the late A. Monroe Aurand, Jr. Aurand also provided an introduction and a biographical sketch. The Boonastiel book was first published in 1893 by Harter, who was formerly the editor and publisher of the Bellfonte “Gazette” and before that the Middleburg “Post.” The Boonastiel book, now long since out of print, did not contain all of the Boonastiel columns which Harter had written and printed in his lifetime. Aurand writes: “Certain it is, however, that the cream of the crop is here in our volume.” We are featuring DIE MAED SIN WIE GLEENE FISCH this week as a salute to Marcella Loose of Ephrata who read the Boonastiel tale to the Brownstown Senior Citizens assembled in the Brownstown Restaurant on Tuesday afternoon, July 8, 1986. Marcella is a master at reading Dutch tales and poems, hence our salute this week. She also read a translation into Dutch of “Twas The Night Before Christmas,” which we hope to print in December, for it was translated by someone from Ephrata. In addition to Marcella Loose, we want to salute all the Brownstown Senior Citizens, who we assure you are all young in heart!!! Perhaps we’ll be able to report on them again if their mascot (an unnamed young lady) keeps us properly informed. (Of course, the proprietors of the Brownstown Restaurant are none other than Arlene and Frank Slabach, BischliGnippli’s aunt and uncle, so B.G. can be seen lurking in those parts from time to time.) Blood Drive Held At Fairmount

Save the date, and plan to donate! The Central PA Blood Bank is planning a Community Blood Drive at Fairmount in Ephrata on Thursday, December 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the Farm Crest Community Room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive on the east side of the Fairmount campus. According to the Central PA Blood Bank, “we’re at a critical need for blood right now. Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs lifesaving blood. Many patients who have major surgeries will need a blood transfusion. Additionally, blood transfusions are used for patients who have serious injuries from car crashes or natural disasters, and people with illnesses that cause anemia, like leukemia or kidney disease.” Please consider donating. Since there is no substitute for human blood, and donors are the only source, this is a wonderful gift to those in need from all walks of life. Everyone who donates will receive two free admission passes to the Pennsylvania Auto Show, a certificate from Papa John’s, a free Penn Cinema movie pass, and a free Blood Donor TShirt. A form of ID is required to donate, and masking is optional. You may schedule an appointment by calling 18007710059. Walk ins are also welcome until 6:00 p.m., but scheduled

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

Paul’s Kind of Church By: Pastor Paul M. Sadler It seems as though everyone these days is looking for the perfect church. Some years ago Our Daily Bread published the following account: A man reportedly came to the British pastor, Charles H. Spurgeon, looking for the perfect church. The famous

preacher told him he had many saintly people in his congregation, but a “Judas” could also be among them. After all, even Jesus had a traitor in the company of His apostles. He went on to say that some might be walking disobediently, as had been the case among the believers at Rome, Corinth, and Galatia. “My church is not the one you’re looking for,” said Spurgeon. “But if you should happen to find such a church, I beg you not to join it, for you would spoil the whole thing.” The local church will never be perfect on this side of glory, simply because disobedience and carnality

are always in attendance with grace and love. If you have ever attended a congregational meeting where opposing sides were having a heated discussion over a thorny issue, you probably tried to leave early to avoid being tarred and feathered. Attending these types of congregational meetings is not for the faint of heart. It reminds us of the old saying, “To dwell above with saints we love, oh that will sure be glory. But to dwell below with saints we know, well, that’s another story!” Interestingly, this statement touches the very heart of the matter. In fact, it’s why the local church is so essential to the plans and

purposes of God, as we will see… I have had the privilege, by the grace of God, to pastor three Grace churches. The experience was invaluable, and as I look back, while I didn’t realize it at the time, the Lord was preparing me for the position I presently hold at the Berean Bible Society. During those years of my pulpit ministry, I learned the importance of patterning my ministry after the Apostle Paul. Essentially I sought to emulate what the apostle did when he planted a local church. In fact, did he not instruct us along these lines to do this very thing? “Those things, which ye have both learned, and

Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, December 6, 2023 - 15A

to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight” (Acts 20:7). Today, the sound preaching of the Word has been replaced in most local assemblies with alternative worship services and marketing schemes to build a popular church that everyone wants to attend. There is rarely a month that goes by that I don’t have a colorful brochure come across my desk on Church Growth Programs. Sadly, the church growth movement has relegated the Word of God to a secondary role in favor of song services, skits, films, and testimonials. This concept is merely an attempt

to draw larger audiences with the idea that “bigger is better.” If they provide more social functions and innovative programs, they’ll be better equipped to meet the needs of the community. It’s a lofty goal, but a flawed concept. The problem here is this: when the church across town announces they’re building a new gym or they plan to have a contemporary worship service with gifted musicians, probably before long many of your people will be going to this new venue. It wouldn’t be the first time a local assembly was left with a small handful of people and a large mortgage.

Unfortunately, all of this is at the expense of the Word of God, which is the very thing that will minister to the needs of the people. The temptation is very real for local churches to go along with the trends of the day, but is it our desire to please men or God? Many church boards are fearful that if Paul’s apostleship and message are proclaimed in their fullness, it may upset someone and drive them away! I remember several years ago I was on the platform with a young Grace pastor who spent the first ten minutes of his message apologizing for Paul’s apostleship. He felt we made too much of Paul and that we need to tone it down in the Grace Movement or we were going to offend people. I’m sure most of his comments were for my benefit, but he was speaking to the wrong person. I came out of the confusion of denominationalism years ago, and I have no intention of returning, as this young man was suggesting. I thank God without ceasing that I’ve been set free from the bondage of tradition, and I’m going to tell anyone who’s willing to listen that

they, too, can be delivered if they acknowledge Paul’s gospel. Beloved ones, Paul is God’s spokesman for the Church today; thus, to speak disparagingly of God’s apostle is to reject the counsel of God itself. Paul’s epistles reveal the mind and will of God for the Body of Christ during this dispensation. Shall we apologize for the Word of God that has been delivered to us by our apostle? I think not!! While we should speak the truth in love, the truth is offensive (Gal. 5:11 cf. Eph. 4:15). I recall the first time someone told me I was a helldeserving sinner—I was offended by that statement! But I thank God that I was offended, because through the process, I got saved. We

must be very careful not to remove the “offense of the Cross” by sugarcoating our words with flowery platitudes, which can condemn men to perdition. One of the purposes of the local church is to provide an atmosphere where the Word of God can be received with thanksgiving. The preaching of the Word must be the centerpiece of our worship of Almighty God. True worship begins with God being glorified in the teaching of His Word. It is then enhanced by the singing of hymns, spiritual songs, prayer, and testimonials. For the most part, this order has been reversed in our churches today, which has left the Lord’s people floundering spiritually in their Christian lives.

When we speak here of preaching the Word, we are not referring to a 12minute devotional message on Sunday morning, which has little profit. Rather, whenever we gather around the Word to worship, the preferable way to open the Scriptures is to do a versebyverse exposition of a particular book, such as the Book of Romans. We believe this is the most profitable and effective way to teach the Scriptures. Remember, Paul reasoned with his hearers, he alleged, he taught them the Word of life. Whatever format you use, “preach the Word,” and the Lord’s people will respond as those at Thessalonica did to Paul’s preaching.

Akron Borough Welcomes Three Junior Council Members

At the Monday, November 13 Akron Borough Council meeting, three Ephrata High School students were sworn in as Junior Council mem bers. The new members will include Akron Borough residents Rebecca Abraham, Earianne Evangelista, and Max Herman. This Akron Borough initiative is a part of the Junior Council Person Pro

gram (JCP), encouraged by the PA State Association of Boroughs in Harrisburg. A JCP Program allows high school and college students the opportunity to learn critical skills including team building, and collaboration, public speaking, public engagement, budgeting and running effective meetings. It also allows the student the opportunity to deliberate on

issues that are affecting his or her community. The students will not vote with the Akron Borough Council, but will participate in Council discussions and offer input and opinions for consideration. They are also invited to attend PA State Association of Boroughs conferences. Justin Gehman, Akron Borough Council vice

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese This time of year includes crisp cool days, beautiful walks in nature, and incredibly colorful fall foliage, but eventually that beauty turns to work in the form of leaf cleanup. If you think your leaf pile at home is work, just check out the daunting task Ephrata Borough employee Brad Crills has as he works at what seems like an endless pile of leaves on the rail trail. Brad gets all the fallen leaves to the middle of the trail, where the Borough vacuum truck then sucks them up in short order. Unfortunately, he has not seen the last of fall, as trees in the background are still holding fast.

contribute to a forwardthinking community.” Her future plans are to double major at college in Neuroscience and PreMedical Studies, with the goal of becoming a Neurologist. Currently the FFA vice-president, she is active in volunteering in area Coptic Orthodox Christian Churches. A recent honor was being selected as a delegate to attend a conference of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists at Harvard Square. Earianne Evangelista said, “I want to be able to express opinions and perspectives that will help the community and strengthen the needed bond between older and younger generations.” As an articulate 12th grade

student, she is a member of the Debate Club. She also volunteers as a Peer Tutoring member and as a Big Buddies member. Her future plans are to attend The John Jay College of Criminal Justice, majoring in an accelerated BA/MS in Forensic Psychology. Max Herman, an 11th grader, said, “I would like to help better the town that I grew up and reside in.” One of the honors achieved by Herman is the silver level on the National German Exam, that he was awarded two times. Herman volunteers by delivering food to Ephrata Area Social Services and by rescuing dogs. Ranking high in the science fair, Herman thinks that his future college work and future career might involve the sciences. Mayor John McBeth is shown swearing in the new Junior Council members. Kenzie Koch is in 6th grade at LAMS. She is a strong willed, smart, and kind person. She is very persistent and will not easily give up. Kenzie likes LAMS because we get to learn about God and talk about him without getting in trouble. She also likes that the teachers are so understanding. Kenzie’s favorite subjects are social studies and language arts. Kenzie likes S.S because Mrs. Wall makes it fun. She likes L.A. because she enjoys reading, and Ms. LeFever is nice and fun. Kenzie enjoys playing piano and volleyball. She also plays basketball at her church. In Kenzie’s spare time, she enjoys baking, playing piano, and reading. She also likes listening to music. Kenzie’s greatest decision was to accept Jesus into her life. Kenzie hopes to earn a place on distinguished honor roll this year. She would like to be a cake decorator for a future job. She enjoys making desserts that look like interesting things. Her role models are Jesus and Ms. LeFever. She looks up to them because they both have strong faith. Kenzie goes to Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, and sometimes Kenzie helps in the nursery there. She is also a part of a Kid’s Club. Kenzie’s favorite verse is Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” One thing Kenzie would like to change in the world is expenses. She wishes they would go down, because many people Written by: can’t get an education because they Anna Buch don’t have the money.
