Who’s Hiring in Transportation

• On December 10, 1690, a near-mutiny forces the Massachusetts Bay Colony to issue the first paper currency in the Western Hemisphere. Soldiers were typically paid in coins, but shortages forced armies to temporarily issue IOUs -- in one case, in the form of cutup playing cards. • On December 7, 1787, in Dover, Delaware, the U.S. Constitution is unanimously ratified by all 30 delegates to the Delaware Constitutional

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Jan’s Circle of Friends would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s Daisy Dash 5k Run/Walk a huge success. This year they were unsure how things would go due to COVID-19 and thanks to all involved it was their most successful race to date – both in the amount of participants and the amount of money raised! These monies go directly back to the community and fund the programs helping children affected by domestic violence and parental loss. Again, they cannot thank you all enough for such a successful year. Shown in the photo, from left to right are Marta Hummer, Tia Stauffer, Melanie Heck and Katie Vang. Missing from the photos is Rebecca Donahue. Convention, making Delaware the first state of the modern United States. Government under the U.S. Constitution took effect on March 4, 1789. • On December 9, 1921, an engineer at General Motors discovers that when he added tetraethyl lead to gasoline, it eliminated the knocking sound of internal-

combustion engines. In the 1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency phased out leaded gasoline due to health concerns. • On December 8, 1941, Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress and a lifelong pacifist, casts the sole Congressional vote against the U.S. declaration

of war on Japan. She also had voted against U.S. involvement in World War I. • On December 11, 1978, a half dozen masked robbers raid the Lufthansa Airlines cargo building at JFK Airport in New York, making off with more than $5 million in cash ($20 million in today’s dollars)

and almost $1 million in jewelry. • On December 12, 1989, Leona Helmsley, nicknamed the “Queen of Mean,” is sentenced to four years in prison, 750 hours of community service and a $7.1 million tax-fraud fine in New York. Helmsley once quipped that “only the little people pay taxes.”

• On December 13, 2003, in Seattle, the iconic Hat ‘n’ Boots Tex Gas Station is hauled away from the spot where it had stood for almost 50 years. The 44-foot-wide Stetson hat had perched atop the filling station’s office, while the 22-foottall cowboy boots housed the men’s and the women’s restrooms.

DURLACHMT. AIRY FIRE COMPANY Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Children attending this one room school just outside Terre Hill spent their recess time to create an uplifting message that everyone traveling Route 897 can see and appreciate. The chain link fence provides the canvas and Mother Nature’s fallen leaves supply the fill for the letters of the message. Dried up leaves are tightly packed into the fence, and little by little the message begins to take shape with the help of many small hands and lots of dedication. These things which seem so simple can change a person’s day from one of being negative to one of positivity. Thank you Linden Grove kids for your gesture of kindness.

Representing one of Cocalico High School’s compassionate, caring, and empathetic students is senior Katlyn Rivera. The oldest daughter of Lori and Anthony Rivera, Katlyn has been playing for the girls’ soccer team since her freshman year and is part of the Reading Olympics. Drawn to relaxing and reading stories, walking her dog, skateboarding, and hiking, she is closely connected to nature. Although she does not admit it, Katlyn is a hardworking person who strives to achieve her goals. In the vigorous course of Honors Precalculus and Trigonometry, when the pandemic hit, Katlyn had to shift her learning ability to an online format but with perseverance, she was able to make it through the remainder of the course. It is no surprise that her hard work ethic and distinct character has earned her a student shout-out. Outside school walls, Katlyn is actively involved in Metzler Mennonite Church with her youth group. She has been doing community work, cleaning up yards, and volunteering with relief sales. She also went on a mission trip with her youth group to St. Croix and worked on the Youth With A Mission base to help with a kid’s camp. If Katlyn could change anything in the world, it would be to help Muslims who are being kept in camps and forced to go against what they believe. Katlyn is salient in her service and passion for justice. Indeed, this quality of compassion gives Katlyn leverage to impact the world in her unique way. After she graduates, Katlyn plans to attend Penn State Berks to major in mechanical engineering for four years. She hopes that college will be a supporting experience for her classes and career goals. Outside the career lens, Katlyn hopes to see the world, explore new cultures, and meet new and interesting people. Overall, one lesson high school has taught Katlyn is to adapt to the uncertainty of the future, which shows her tranquility. From this, she hopes to be Written by: like her mom, who inspires her to be Melody Pha strong.

Danny Coomer Senior

Danny Coomer is a senior at Lititz Christian School. He currently plays soccer and plans to play basketball in the winter. He is a hard worker and determined athlete. He spends most of his free time playing basketball at the rec with his friends or doing homework. He has not stopped working on his basketball skills since last season has ended. He has worked tirelessly everyday to perfect his skills and step up as a player. His hard work and determination is admirable and something we should all strive for. Not only is he an amazing athlete but also a bright student. He is still unsure what he wants to do after high school, but does know that he wants to go to college. One of his many passions is cooking. He discovered this when he began working at Blackworth Live Fire Grill and had an opportunity to try out working with food and a busy kitchen environment. He is now excited to be training as a line cook. If he isn’t playing basketball, doing school, or working, Danny is hanging out with his amazing classmates. His main goal as his senior year continues is to focus on his athletics and enjoy the rest of the year with Written by: his class. Danny is a bright and talented student at Evie Cadwalader Lititz Christian School.

They drove the animal into a narrow pen at the back door of the butchering room. This was a double door and the butcher threw the loop of a bull rope over the animal’s head and tightened the rope. The rope was put through a strong ring that was fastened to the floor in cement. They pulled the animal down until its head was on the floor. Then the butcher struck it in the middle of the forehead with all his might with the butchering ax and the ox fell down unconscious. Then the butcher quickly cut the throat of the ox. When the bleeding was finished, two men took out the entrails and removed the hide, sawed the body in two parts and pushed the pieces on pulleys into the cooling room. Nowadays, everything is up to date and there aren’t many butchers around that butcher their own animals. Most of the meat comes from the large slaughter houses in the city and there many butchers purchase their meat wholesale and cut it up and sell it in market houses or in stores. With electric refrigeration available, each store and supermarket sells meat and often it isn’t what we were accustomed to as freshly butchered meat. I would rather eat freshly butchered meat. It has a taste that many young

people have not experienced. Liver pudding, scrapple, pig’s feet jelly and pig stomach are no longer to be found, with the exception of a few old-fashioned butchers in market houses. Now I want to tell a story that belongs to butchering in the time of my uncle Jerry. He had a hired man by the name of Sam to help him out at the time that his children were yet small. Sam was a good worker, but he became angry very quickly. At that time it was the custom to prepare a big meal at a funeral. The mourners were invited to come back to the house of mourning for the noon meal after the funeral was over. One Monday morning, Sam, the hired man, walked across the street to the butcher shop just at the time that Abe Brendel was coming by in a carriage. Abe was a teller of tall tales and well known for it. He enjoyed nothing more than to tie a good fib onto someone. This Sam knew. “Good morning!” said Sam, “tell me a good lie this morning.” “No,” said Abe, “I surely don’t have time this morning. I’m on the way to Gibralter to announce a funeral for the Glass family. Martin Glass died yesterday and will be buried on Thursday. But I’m glad that you stopped me. I had planned to stop on the way back and order 50 pounds of meat for boiling that Jerry is to send up on Wednesday morning, so that the cooks can prepare it for the funeral meal on Thursday.” Wednesday morning Jerry sent Sam to the Glass home with the meat. This was near Adamstown and when Sam drove onto the place, Martin Glass came running from the house. Sam quickly understood what had happened and without a word he turned around and drove to Abe’s place which was about a mile farther on. Abe was cradling wheat in a field by the road. Sam stopped and crawled out of his buggy, marched up to Abe and dressed him down and said: “I’m going to thrash you within an inch of your life for telling me such a lie on Monday.” “Well,” says Abe, “you got what you asked for. If you want to thrash me, this would be a good time to begin.” And Abe lifted the cradle ready to swing it. Still cursing, Sam climbed into his buggy and took the meat home again. *** Of the many poems and stories that “Papa” Horning has written for the Eck, this is one of our favorites, for he not only recalls a very important aspect of our local history, he does so in a most interesting fashion. This is the finest piece of Dutch prose that we have beheld in many a season. So again our Deitscher Schtrohhut is off to Paul Horning in Bradenton in sunny Florida. Now we are looking forward to a piece on “Die Beckerei” which Paul is preparing. May 11, 1983 Es Bischli-Gnippli

It’s the right size, and it can keep it safe until the next day. * “When my curly curly hair gets the frizz, I use a sheet of fabric softener to take the static electricity out of it. THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

Averting the Subverting by Pastor Ricky Kurth “…there are many…vain talkers…of the circumcision: whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake” (Titus 1:10,11). When Paul warned Titus

about vain talkers of the circumcision “who subvert whole houses” with their teaching, that word subvert means to turn something upside down. The prefix “sub” should make you think of the ships that travel under water, and the suffix vert refers to something vertical. So subvert means to turn something vertical upside down. Now that’s an interesting thing for Paul to say about these unsaved Jews, for that was a charge that they were leveling at him. They were saying that Paul and his helpers had “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:5,6). Paul wasn’t turning the world in general upside down, of course, for the

world in general was taking little note of him. But when some other unsaved Jews called Paul “a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world” (Acts

24:5), it shows that the only world they cared about was the world of the Jews. That was the world that Paul’s new message of grace was turning upside down!

Reamstown Church of God “Empowered to bring Jesus’ love, healing, and hope to the world”

Now here I should point out that saved Jews accepted Paul’s new ministry of grace among the Gentiles (Acts 15:19-29; Gal. 2:9). But unsaved Jews didn’t want their world turned upside down, and they weren’t going to take it lying down! They fought back by teaching the Law, subverting those Gentiles who are not under the Law (Rom. 6:15), and trying to take the world that Paul had turned upside down with his message of grace and turning it upside down again back to the Law. God calls that subversion. Does that remind you of what happened when some Jews first taught the Law to Gentiles? The leaders at the Jerusalem council heard

about it and wrote a letter to those new Gentile converts, saying, “…we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, ye must… keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment” (Acts 15:24). The saved leaders of the Hebrew church said, as it were, “We didn’t authorize those Jews to teach the Law to you new Gentile converts.” And they said the same thing Paul says here in our text, that teaching the Law to Gentiles was “subverting” them—subverting their very “souls.” Beloved, it turns the soul of a Gentile upside down to put him under

the Law, for he’s bound to wonder why the Law doesn’t work in his life! For instance, he is going to wonder why God isn’t blessing him with good health when he obeys God, as God did for the Jews under the Law (Ex. 15:26). He is going to wonder why God isn’t blessing him with wealth when he pays his tithes, as God did for the Jews under the law (Mal. 3:10). It is sad to think of how the souls of men are still being turned upside down, all because men are still teaching the Law to this day. When Paul adds that they were teaching the Law “for filthy lucre’s sake,” that means they knew better than to teach the Law, but didn’t care because it was profitable. Men do some pretty despicable things for money. Human traffickers prostitute women—and even children—for money. Evil men scam elderly people out of their life savings for money. But there is nothing lower on the face of the planet than religious men who know the truth and teach error for filthy lucre’s sake. So if your pastor is teaching grace, why not encourage him to continue in the message he received from Paul (2 Tim. 3:14)?

The Durlach-Mt. Airy Fire Company was started by a group of local men in the early 1940s, and officially chartered on June 17, 1949. Legend has it that “Durlach” comes first in the fire company name because their community outraised Mt. Airy in fundraising for the new fire company. The company has a “sister station” located in Durlach, Germany. Like Durlach-Mt. Airy Fire Company, Die Freiwillige Feuerwehr Durlach is also station #14.

The fire company’s 18 active members, under the leadership of Don “Smokey” Moyer (shown in the top left photo), answer an average of 150 calls annually in their first due area, comprised of part of West Cocalico Township and a large portion of Clay Township. They also cover the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the municipalities of Elizabeth Township, Denver Borough and East Cocalico Township. Shown in the photo (top right), left to right, are members: (kneeling) Shawn Brown, Chief Engineer; Mike Horning, Assistant Engineer; David Martin, Firefighter; and Curvin Horning, Safety Officer; (standing): Don “Smokey” Moyer, Chief; Jean Moyer, Fire Police Captain; John Martin, Jr., President/ Driver; Mariah Marks, Firefighter; Glenn Nolt, Assistant Chief; Andrew Smith, Firefighter; Ryan Spitler, Firefighter; and Dave Fisher, Treasurer. Shown in the photo (bottom right), left to right, are next-generation firefighters Rylan, Jessalyn, Kierra and Curshane Nolt, holding stuffed animals that are kept in the fire trucks to be given to children involved in auto accidents that the department responds to. In addition to responding to calls, the Durlach-Mt. Airy Fire Company is active in their community, assisting local elementary schools with fire prevention activities, attending first responder events, participating in National Night Out and helping Santa visit neighborhoods for the holidays. They also operate to-go meal fundraisers throughout the year with the support of their Ladies Auxiliary. Community volunteers are welcome to assist the fire company with non-emergency tasks, including fundraisers, and by volunteering time or services for building and property maintenance.
