REAL Life Helps The Homeless

REAL Life Community Services in Denver has been addressing homelessness for years, but most people don’t know it. From helping the unsheltered find a warm place to stay, to helping families stay in their home

with utility assistance and eviction prevention. As they see an increase in need this year, they are raising awareness of who they are and what they do! They call it their “Thanks4Giving” yearend fundraising campaign! Co-founder and Executive Director, Rod Redcay, said, “We need to raise more awareness of what we do. We used to be involved in

the Extra Give, but that was only for one day! We felt that we needed to engage the community and connect more with the many people who still don’t know who we are or what we do!” This led them to create this three-month long campaign to raise $300,000 for their programs and operations! Rod continues, “We thought we would make it fun and informative by celebrating the 12 weeks before Christmas and highlighting a different part of our ministry and programs each week. Thus, encouraging donors to consider giving

Dear Mom,

You kissed my tears away today when I was very sad. I wasn’t feeling quite myself my day had been so bad. I felt a warmth brush by me that quickly dried my tears. A gentle, kind, and loving touch that seemed to hold me near. Immediately, I felt better and the day seemed brighter too. I guess that’s just the way you feel when your mother kisses you.

What was the expectation of God for the family? Why did they break the covenant with God? What challenges did they face? How did God restore the family for His greater plan? What is the Gospel in those families of Genesis?

Please join this journey to discover the family principles God intended so that you can keep your families following God and make an impact on other families. “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” (Genesis 2:23) These were the first human words ever spoken. They are words of praise for the moment of the birth of a family. It was such a lovely poem by Adam to his wife, Eve. What does family mean for today? Out of nothing, God created the Heavens and the Earth for the family. God designated the planet Earth as the only place in the galaxy for family. God commanded families, to

“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” God gave families the ability to procreate through love. Family is in the center of God’s creation, but today’s families are falling apart, dysfunctional, and even fragmented. Family is no longer the home for loved ones. No wonder society has become so violent and divided. Why? Because Satan initiated the work of evil by penetrating the family of Adam and Eve. People inherited the sin, generation after generation. Satan’s top priority is the destruction of family, its values, and love and trust. The messages will take place during the church’s usual Sunday Service times: Traditional Services are 8:30 a.m. and Contemporary Services are 10:30 a.m.

Eagle Ambassadors Donate To Wreaths Across America The Denver Elementary Eagle Ambassador Club engages students in deeper learning and practices the Eagle P.A.C.T. skills (problem-solving & critical thinking; adaptability & flexibility; communication; teamwork and collaboration) for an authentic purpose. The Eagle Ambassadors sponsored a coin collection contest to donate money towards Wreaths Across America. The students were also competing by grade level — the grade level with the highest donation amount by the end of the week will receive an extra recess. The Eagle Ambassadors set a goal of sponsoring 20 wreaths. They raised $1,284.55, which was

enough money to sponsor 75 wreaths! The community members they met with were shocked and very proud of the patriotism and generosity the school community dis-

played. The ladies also informed them that they would be placing the wreath order through the “buy two get one free program,” which means they really will be donating over 100

PLAYMATES Oh, good friends are rather rare; One considers oneself lucky with a few. Some stand by one for a lifetime, Some are not steadfast, I fear. I remember well an old friend From my long gone childhood. She has moved far away, yes, And I never see her now. But I often think of those days; I see her yet with my mind’s eye: Her blonde hair in braids I think I hear her happy laughter. I wish I could turn back the clock And see our capers again. I appreciated her enthusiasm And we tried many things then. Ruth was always right along, Ready for anything new. We had lots of fun, just we two, We often played thus, all alone. Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, December 20, 2023 - 11A

Walked rail fences and ran races, Sledded and sang songs.

My father built us a playhouse, And said to us: “Now, be careful!” That house in the tree was very nice, So high up there in space. There we told stories, And divided food between us.

Those old days are gone now, But I had a good friend. I like to think back through the years, When my neighbor Ruth and I were friends. *** Late in July of this year, we again had the pleasure of hearing from Gladys S. Martin of Glenwood Drive in Effredaa. We had not heard from Gladys in many a moon. Her latest opus is a moving tribute to her childhood playmate, Ruth. We hope that Ruth will some day read and enjoy this tribute. Perhaps then Ruth will respond with a poem of her own.

We slept there a few nights, But the bed in there was a bit hard. We talked a lot and giggled then, And didn’t fall asleep till quite late. In autumn in the cornfield We were as though in another world. We pretended that the corn shocks Were Indian tents with many colors.

In the meanwhile, we urge all our ECK readers to take up their pens and send us a poem, a story, a list of Dutch words or expressions or just a note in Deitsch. If you include an English translation, we’ll be greatly helped. Don’t forget to tune in to DIE ALDE KUMMRAADE, which airs every Sunday at 12:15 p.m. in WLBR (1270 on your AM dial). We’ve been on the air for more than 15 years!!! This week, Bischli-Gnippli lifts his Deitscher Schtrohhut in salute to Gladys S. Martin and her childhood playmate, Ruth - in parts unknown. I remember that we used to bury things And make maps to show others, Just where the things were buried. This provided great fun, marvelous! We didn’t play with dolls at all; We would much rather have burrowed In the hay and straw or in the meadow Looked for berries or nuts.

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” by Charles Wesley Charles was a prolific poet, musician and pastor who lived in England and was responsible with his brother, John Wesley, for the Methodist revivals of the 18th century. It’s a classic hymn sung in churches all

over the world on Christmas morning. Hark! The herald Angels sing, Glory to the new-born King, Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinner reconcil’d. Hark! The herald Angels sing, Glory to the new-born King. Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies, With the angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Hark! the herald Angels sing, Glory to the new-born King. Christ by highest

Heaven ador’d, Christ the everlasting Lord! Late in time behold him come,

Annual Holiday Train Show

The Short Line Model Railroad Club, located at 11 S. State St., Ephrata, will hold its annual Holiday Train Show every Saturday and Sunday from now through Sunday, January 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The entrance to the exhibit is located in the rear of the building. This wonderful family event is free and open to the public; however, a donation to the club is appreciated. Guests to the train show will enjoy seeing miniature trains rolling though very detailed scenery, representative of northeastern Pennsylvania, on more than 900 feet of double-tracked mainline, and a 75-foot, single-tracked branch line. Many of the model locomotives feature realistic steam and diesel sounds and are controlled by wireless digital controllers. All phases of various types of layout construction are on display. Members of the club will be available during showtimes to discuss the train exhibit and answer

After worship, the congregation will distribute luminaries along the driveways. It has been tradition at Bergstrasse to place and light these luminaries the evening of Sunday, December 24 so that travelers along the highway can be reminded of this Holy Night. • The Christmas Eve worship “Celebrate Jesus’s Birth” will begin with special music by the Morales family of Philadelphia at

Akron Borough’s New Year’s Eve Family Tradition Continues The Akron Borough ShoeIn committee is busy preparing for the Annual New Year’s Eve Shoe Drop and Community Night on Sunday, December 31, from 9:00 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. at the Broad Street Park. This free “fun for all ages” family friendly event will include: hot chocolate, food, door prizes, a candy cannon scramble, hayrides, dancing in the pavilion with a DJ spinning tunes, family games, and a bonfire created in the shape of a sneaker. And of course, the famous giant purple and gold Converse Chuck Taylor shoe drop at midnight is a tradition you don’t want to miss! Pastor Chris Leiby with Cultivate Community Church, 650 Main Street (corner of Rt. 272 and Main) in Akron, will once again be hosting the popular Kid Friendly New Year’s Celebration with a hot cocoa bar and activities from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the church. Families are then invited to proceed to the park for the New Year’s festivities and countdown. Shown in the photo, from left to right, are committee

members gathering at the Akron Borough Hall to check out the shoe. They are: (kneeling) Ryan Myers, Committee Member and Kyle Wagner (volunteer);

SERVICE! 7th Grade Fading away in the back of the room is the unique and classic music K Pop, or Korean pop music. Ferocious scribbling is heard to the side of the action as Taylor Akinin, a sweet and creative 7th grader at Hinkletown Mennonite School, works on one of her favorite sketches. Taylor is the older sister to Kaylee and Nathan, and lives with her parents, Russ and Olga Akinin. Taylor loves taking a break from the busyness of her house and diving into her own world through art and music. Taylor has enjoyed art since she was little. She says she was inspired by her grandpa, who went to art school, and her cousins, who enjoy anything artistic. Taylor’s favorite type of art is painting, where she likes making landscapes and any nature scene. She enjoys giving her pieces away to others when she finishes. Taylor is also creative through her music. In fourth grade, Taylor learned the flute, and it has stuck with her ever since. Her favorite part of the instrument is playing through unique and fast songs. When she was in sixth grade, Taylor was a part of PMEA, or Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, where she was a member of a band that played three songs for the public. When Taylor is older, she hopes to use her creativity in her career and possibly pursue a job as an art teacher or work with digital art. Aside from art and music, Taylor enjoys reading mystery and romance novels, and going to Ephrata Community Church with her family. Wherever she goes, Taylor loves spreading the joy and Written by: Riley Ament love of Jesus to others.

Martin Ephrata Mennonite

Hailey Martin Junior

Hailey Martin has been attending Ephrata Mennonite School since Kindergarten and is now a Junior. She is very involved with things at school. She has served on the Student Council for two years and this year had the opportunity to be President. Her job as President includes being the spokesperson, brainstorming, and organizing events. Hailey enjoys playing sports and plays on two sports teams. Although she is sad that volleyball season is over, she is looking forward to the start of basketball season. She is taking two AP classes this semester, AP Language and Composition and AP Calculus. Although these classes are difficult, she has been learning a lot. While she isn’t in school or involved in school-related activities, you can find her working at her part-time job at Dutchway Farm Market, hanging out with her friends, or spending some alone time reading. Hailey attends church and the youth group at New Covenant Mennonite Church. This past summer the youth group went on a missions trip to South Dakota. This coming summer, she is looking forward to going to Jamaica with her youth group. Hailey has some big plans and goals for her future. After she graduates, she wants to go into the medical field, specifically with labor and delivery. To accomplish that goal, she is currently taking a college class, anatomy and physiology, at HACC. She is able to do that through Ephrata Mennonite’s dual enrollment program. She hasn’t decided what college she wants to go to, but one on the top of her list is Pensacola Christian College. However, these plans might change as she follows God’s will for her Written by: life. Hailey Martin is an excellent student Shakira and a friend to all and is excited to see Burkholder what the rest of the year holds.
