Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, December 27, 2023 - 5A

If I were still a child, I’d be filled with fright and fear. And how do you feel? It frightens me!

FREY, Kere L. and Jael (Epple), Leola, a son, at Women & Babies Hospital. HORNING, Daniel and Ruth Ann (Brubaker), Denver, a daughter, at Birth Care & Family Health Services, Bart. HORNING, Elvin and Lorraine (Hoover), New Holland, a daughter, at UPMC Lititz. HURST, Elverne and Lori (Hoover), Ephrata, a son, at home.

KOUADIO, Jean Charles S. and Savay, New Holland, a daughter, at Women & Babies Hospital. LAPP, Amos F. and Linda F. (Beiler), Leola, a daughter, at home. MARTIN, Jay M. and Lois (Nolt), East Earl, twin daughters, at Women & Babies Hospital. MARTIN, Joshua and Christina (Wenger), Eph rata, a daughter, at Birth Care and Family Health Services, Bart. NEWSWANGER, Loren and Marianna (Shirk), New Holland, a son, at home. PETERSHEIM, Samuel

and Lydia Ann, Lititz, a daughter, at home. SABELLICO, Natasha M., and Austin B. Swalley, Lititz, a son, at UPMC Lititz. STOLTZFUS, Melvin and Barbara (Lapp), Nar von, a daughter, at home. VARGAS, Soany, Leola, a son, at Women & Babies Hospital. ZIMMERMAN, Earl N. and Rosene S. (Shirk), Lititz, a daughter, at UPMC Lititz. ZIMMERMAN, Curvin and Kerri, a son, at UPMC Lititz.

to own a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. She also became the first female superintendent of banking for New York State. And after her death, the New York Stock Exchange named Siebert Hall for her, marking the first time a room at the stock exchange was named for a person.

* On December 29, 1852, Emma Snodgrass was arrested in Boston for the crime of ... wearing pants. Mocked by one newspaper as “the foolish girl who goes around in virile toggery,” she was sent home to her police officer father in New York but went on to repeat the act a number of times.

* On December 30, 1940, California’s first freeway, Arroyo Seco Parkway, also known as the Pasadena Freeway, officially opened to traffic. Now considered narrow and outdated, though still in use, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

Births

I’ll fetch me a better coat And better stockings and shoes; I’ll saw some wood at the block And split it also. Wouldn’t this be good for you? It frightens me!

* On December 25, 1868, President Andrew Johnson offered amnesty to all Confederate soldiers with Proclamation 179. It was the fourth order of its kind, with earlier agreements re establishing legal rights to Confederate soldiers if they signed oaths of loyalty to the United States. * On December 26, 1991, Jack Ruby’s 38caliber Colt Cobra revolver, which the nightclub owner used to kill J.F.K. assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, sold for $220,000 in a Las Vegas auction. The original asking price was $1 million. * On December 27, 2019, Valerie Sneade and Jason Roy got married at their local Dunkin’ Donuts in Worcester, Massachusetts, after ending their relationship at the same shop nearly three decades earlier. The reunited couple attributed their long separation to misunderstandings and “words that didn’t come out right.” * On December 28, 1967, American businesswoman Muriel “Mickie” Siebert became the first woman

And now I go into my house And carry my wood along in; Then I have a good rest And let be that which is outside. Hei ya! what concern is it of yours? It frightens me! *** This week it’s time to print the poems by Gladys S. Martin and the late Rev. Eli Keller dedicated to the month of November. Gladys Martin thinks of beavers, warm nights turning colder and of the coming snows - and then finally of spring. Eli Keller thinks of Indian summer and the delightful thoughts it brings with it and for some strange reason of elderly women who roam for miles. Have any of our readers an explanation for these lines? ES SCHAUDERT MICH is another interesting poem by Eli Keller. We thought we’d include it this week for good measure, for it would appear to fit into the mood of this late fall season. Would this not be a good poem to set to music? We are hopeful that this poem by Eli Keller will inspire others to write about their feelings this time of the year. It is again our distinct pleasure to lift our newly winterized Schtrohhut in salute to Gladys S. Martin of Glenwood Drive bei Effredaa and honor the memory of the late Rev. Dr. Eli Keller, one of our outstanding dialect poets of the 19th century who died in Allentown shortly after World War I. November 12, 1986 En Bischli-Gnippli as net schaudere will

As an exchange student from Spain, Javier Heredia De Leon is a hardworking 11th grader here at Garden Spot High School. He is really into sports and he enjoys learning and refining his English. In Spain, Javier plays soccer in his free time. High school sports in Spain differ from the sports in the U.S. because they are not extracurricular teams that are an extension of the schools; they are more like a club. Javier also loves spending time with his friends and getting to learn new things. After graduating high school, he plans on pursuing a career in international relations. He wants to study a broad range of subjects such as history, political science, international law and geography. When I asked Javier “what’s been your greatest accomplishment here so far in the US?” He responded by saying: “Getting out of my comfort zone and talking to new people.” He said his favorite person to spend time with here in Eastern Lancaster County is Diego Portales, a G.S. senior and the youngest son in Javier’s host family. He said Diego is always there for him whenever he needs to talk; Diego also knows how to get him to laugh or smile and Javier looks up to him very much. Javier enjoys getting together with the other foreign exchange students and going to sporting events at Garden Spot. Schools in Spain assign kids many hours of homework outside of the curricular day. Here in the States, however, Javier says he has a lot of free time and he’s trying to find ways to stay busy and connect with people. While he is Written by: not yet ready to return home, he admits Marissa he misses his family and friends and he Buckwalter thinks about them all the time.

oranges

While oranges can be found in today’s grocery stores year-round, prime citrus season typically falls over the winter months. In days past, these brightly colored fruits were not readily available in most areas, and were a prized purchase when they were able to be found around the holidays – which is one theory behind the tradition of youngsters often finding an orange in the toe of their stocking on Christmas morning. We asked readers to share their favorite orange recipes with us. We received many responses, including those below. To view all of the recipes submitted, along with those submitted for past Hometown Flavors sections, visit www.snews.com.

Orange Date Muffins

Mary Ann Dell, East Earl 1 orange, peeled ½ cup orange juice ½ cup chopped dates 1 egg ½ cup margarine 1¾ cup flour ¾ cup sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda Cut up orange and remove seeds. Combine with juice in blender; puree. Add dates, egg and margarine to blender. Blend and pour into a medium bowl. Add dry ingredients and mix till combined. Fill muffin cups. Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes. Notes: Add more juice as needed. Raisins may be substituted for dates.

Golden Danish Twists

Sarah E. Eby, Ephrata “This is an excellent recipe liked by all!” ¼ cup butter or margarine 1 cup hot scalded milk ¼ cup sugar 2 teaspoons salt 1 cup mashed cooked pumpkin 2 eggs ½ cup warm water 2 packets active dry yeast 3 cups Occident or King Midas flour *additional 2½ to 3 cups Occident or King Midas flour Place ingredients (except for additional flour) in a mixing bowl in the order listed. Beat at medium low for 3 minutes. Stir in the additional flour to make a stiff dough. Cover; let rest 15 minutes. Prepare Orange Icing (recipe follows). Toss dough on a well-floured surface until no longer sticky. Roll out half to form an 18”x12” rectangle.

Spread half, along 18” side, with 1/4 of the icing. Fold uncovered dough over icing. Cut crosswise into 1” strips. Twist each strip 4 or 5 times, and coil onto a wellgreased cookie sheet, keeping flat and tucking the ends under. Repeat with remaining dough. Cover; let rise in a warm place until very light or doubled in size, 45 to 60 minutes. Bake at 375°F for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from sheets immediately. Frost while warm with remaining icing. Notes: Line cookie sheets with foil for easier dishwashing. For high altitudes (5,000 feet), increase salt to 3 teaspoons. Orange Icing: ¼ cup butter or margarine 2 tablespoons flour ¼ cup orange juice 2½ cups powdered sugar 1 tablespoon grated orange peel Melt butter or margarine in a saucepan. Stir in flour and orange juice. Cook, stirring constantly, until thick. Stir in powdered sugar and orange peel.

Walkley Cranberry & Orange Salad

1 orange, juiced and rind zested water 1 egg, beaten 1 cup raw cranberries, halved In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Blend in shortening. Add orange zest. Place juice from orange in a measuring cup and add enough water to bring liquid equal to 3/4 cups. Blend into flour mixture. Add egg. Fold in cranberries. Pour into greased muffin cups, filling 2/3 full. Bake at 350°F for 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from pan and cool on a rack. Makes 18 muffins. Note: This can also be made into a quick bread by pouring batter into an oiled bread pan and baking at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes.

Heather C. Soistmann, Lititz 12 oz. bag of whole cranberries ¾ cup sugar 1 cup orange juice (unsweetened) 1 grated orange peel 1 seedless orange, peeled & diced ¾ cup toasted walnuts In a saucepan, stir together cranberries, sugar, orange juice and orange peel; cook over medium heat. While cranberry mixture cooks, toast walnuts in toaster oven or oven until fragrant and slightly browned; allow to cool. THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

Only Going Through The Motions by Pastor John Fredericksen Throughout much of the Old Testament, God’s people, the nation of Israel, had a very shallow, distant walk with the Lord. Even though given the unique privilege of having God’s written Word available, the Lord told the prophet Amos, “they have despised the law of the Lord, and have not kept

His commandments” (Amos 2:4). This did not mean they completely ignored the Scriptures. In some cases, they simply neglected the Word. Often they only went through the motions of having it read to them without internalizing the truths of God and allowing it to change their daily lives. In other cases, after time in a distant, meaningless walk with the Lord, they completely abandoned the sacred Scriptures to worship false gods made by the hands of men. Israel still had priests, but when God’s true prophets came with a message too close to home, they responded with words such as, “prophesy not again

any more” (Amos 7:13). Resistance, even anger and violence, was a frequent response. Yet, in many cases, they still worshipped the Lord, but only in a halfhearted way that the

Lord would simply not accept. Therefore, God’s message to them was, “I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. Though ye offer Me burnt

offerings…I will not accept them…Take thou away from Me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols” (Amos 5:2123). Even worship toward the Lord can be meaningless, or worthless, to the Lord. This is so when worship is offered with a cold heart, only going through the motions, and without seeking to be continually transformed into the person God wants His child to become (Rom. 12:1 2). Why would the Lord not accept their worship? It boils down to the explanation recorded in both Isaiah and Matthew: “This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoureth Me with their lips; but their

heart is far from Me” (Matt. 15:8; Isa. 29:13). Simply going through the motions of worshipping the Lord is not enough. He desires that we come to Him in sincerity, with biblical truth being paramount, allowing His Word to transform our lives, and desiring a daily walk that knows Him in a real, close, and meaningful way. Believer, don’t settle for just going through the motions of worship. Come to the Lord with a genuine desire to know Him intimately, be “conformed to the image of his Son” (Rom. 8:29), and do His will. Then, and only then, will your worship of the Lord be truly pleasing to the One who gave His life for you.

After the delicious Christ mas meal made by the kitchen staff and served by the members, they were entertained by Red Rose Barbershop Quartet. Pastor Duane Metzler is one of the Quartet along with John, Sandy and Roger. They sang Christmas songs and also a few funny stories. They sang, “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” “Little Saint Nick,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Jingle Bells” with Rudoph leading the way. Hope United Methodist Church Welcomes The Community To Attend A Moving Testimony Given By Mr. Michael O’Donovan, Guest Speaker,

At Our New Year’s Eve Worship Service

Sunday, December 31 at 10 a.m. Our church is located at 3474 Rothsville Rd., Ephrata, PA 17522. As a child, Michael grew up in an alcoholic household. His father was very abusive to both him and his mother. Mike started drinking at age 15 to numb the pain, not realizing that taking one drink would affect him for the rest of his life; until April 4, 1995. On that day, he was totally out of hope and tried to end his life, not believing in God (at that time); He intervened on his behalf. Mike ended up in a treatment center that very day. He was so touched by the people in the treatment center that he was determined to dedicate his life for the last 28 years to helping others struggling to cope with their own issues surrounding alcohol and complications from mental health diagnoses. Mike has held many a position within The Ranch of Pennsylvania and provides others with the knowledge that by God’s grace and a 12-step program one can start their life over again at any time. There is hope. His story has touched many and it is being held at what can be a difficult time of year for so many in our community and beyond. Please join us in learning from Mike and others who will share their journey of healing and hope. We look forward to meeting you.

Students in Mrs. Bell’s, Mrs. Borry’s, and Mrs. Grove’s classrooms at Adamstown Elementary School helped to make the holiday brighter for those residing in local nursing homes. This is the third year the students were able to assist those at The Gardens at Stevens. Thanks to generous donations by Esbenshade’s Garden Center, Stauffer’s of Kissel Hill, and the students’ families, the efforts were expanded this year to include residents of the facility, Faithful Living. Kindergartners and third graders worked together creating holiday cards. Then, on Monday, December 11, Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Borry delivered the cards, along with a poinsettia for each of

the 150 residents in the two nursing facilities. According to Mrs. Bell, “Connecting our young students with our

community’s elderly is a for many years to come.” powerful partnership for all Shown in the photo are involved. We are hoping this morning kindergarten and special project will continue third grade students.
