Darryl Witmer, chair of the Akron Shoe­In committee, says he has many reasons why the Shoe­In holds a special place in his heart.

“Both of my parents

worked at Miller and Hess and a lot of people I knew worked there. I remember my parents leaving to go to work early in the morning before I got dressed for school. After I dressed myself, I had to walk by Miller and Hess so my dad could look out the window and see if he thought I was dressed properly.” Witmer’s mother put eyelets in the shoes and his father

worked on the shoe’s structure. At one time, 80% of the Akron population worked in the shoe factories, which was in business from 1901 and 1984.

Theodore “Ted” L. Martin

Theodore “Ted” L. Martin, 83, of Denver, passed away on Monday, December 19, 2022, at Ephrata Manor.

He was born in Conestoga to the late Clyde W. and Esther (Stauffer) Martin and was the husband of Mary (Stonebraker) Martin with whom he shared 29 years of marriage.

Ted was an assembler for Dana Inc. He enjoyed working outside and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Mount Union Post #107, American Legion.

In addition to his wife, Ted is survived by four children,

memories of this park, where the Shoe­In is held. Years ago, he recalls his father pitching a baseball to him at the Broad Street Park and soon many other children would join them. An impromptu ball game would be the result.

The old­fashioned family-friendly­fl­avor­of­thepast is what Witmer and others on the Akron Shoe In committee wanted to maintain.

Harold Stauffer and sons will bring a tractor and hay wagon and they will run a course for hayrides until midnight. A candy cannon is planned so children, assigned by age groups, can scramble for candy. The children will also receive neon bracelets and bazookas for ringing in the new year.

Robert E. Bauder

Robert E. Bauder, 84, of Stevens, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2022, at The Gardens at Stevens. Born in Millway, he was a son of the late Charles & Beatrice (Grumbling) Bauder and for 65 years he was the loving husband to June L. (Heft) Bauder.

Bob was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1955 to 1959. He worked as a heat-treater on the line at the former Ford New Holland plant, now CNH, in New Holland for 30 years and retired in 1995. Bob was a hard worker and took pride in his work. An avid outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed hunting trips in Potter and Lycoming Counties. He liked both bow and rifle season and trap shooting for fun. Bob loved to travel. He and June explored Hawaii, Nova Scotia, Las Vegas, Disney, and the Grand Canyon together,

Isabel (Hauser) Fox, 96, Luther Acres, Lititz, passed away on Sunday, December 11.

She was the wife of the late Carl F. Fox.

June L. (Heft) Bauder, 82, of Stevens, passed away Monday, December 19, 2022, at the WellSpan York Hospital. Born in Adamstown, June was the third oldest of 11 children born to Jacob O. & Edna M. (Rudy) Heft, and the loving wife of 65 years to Robert ‘Bob’ E. Bauder until his recent passing on Dec. 4th.

June worked in the toy department at the former Nichols Discount City Store in Ephrata, then at the F&M Hat Co. in Denver, and at Polymar plastics in Leola, retiring in 2005. Together, June and Bob loved to travel. Some of their favorite trips included Hawaii, Nova Scotia, Las Vegas, Disney, and the Grand Canyon. June loved being a grandmother. Lovingly called ‘Nanny’, she spoiled her family with homemade meals and baked goods. Her chicken noodle soup, peanut butter eggs, signature cookies, and the

unique dessert called ‘pink cement’, were family favorites. She enjoyed Hallmark movies at Christmas time, NCIS marathons, a good John Wayne movie, word search puzzles, going to the casino, and Rod Stewart in concert. June lived to take care of others. She was selfless and did everything she could for her family. She was independent, spoke her mind, and loved with her whole heart.

If you plant potatoes early in the year (regardless of the variety), you will have “early potatoes.”

An old heavy watch is called “en Grumbier,” or “en aldi Grumbier.” “Ich will moll mei aldi Grumbier rausziehe un noh kann ich dir die Zeit glei saage.” (I want to take out my old “potato,” then I can soon tell you the time.)

A pun: “Sing moll sell Schtick wu’s ken Grumbiere gewwe hot.” (Sing that piece where there were no potatoes.) “Schtick” means a song or a patch of potatoes. Here one would after “Sing” take the meaning of a song while the speaker has reference to the patch of potatoes.

Additional Lore:

A small potato was carried along in the pocket to prevent rheumatism.

To take away warts, a small potato was rubbed over the warts­and­then­put­into­the­chimney­of­the­open­fi­replaceand wasn’t to be looked at until dried out.

Eating raw potatoes will cause intestinal worms.

Good potatoes are “mehlich,” mealy.

New potatoes are “neie Grumbiere.”

The masher used in making mashed potatoes, “Grumbiere Breih,” (This name was given me by my wife. I have not heard it in Lehigh County, where mashed potatoes are called “gemaeschde Grumbiere”) is called “Schtamber” or

“Grumbiereschtamber.”

After the potatoes had been harvested, the patch was harrowed and potatoes that the pickers had not found were uncovered. At our home, the privilege of picking these potatoes was given to some poor person of the village. The stalks were gathered on a heap and burned. If we were able to­fi­nd­any­potatoes,­we­roasted­them.

Potatoes were planted deep, and, this seems to have been a­practice,­were­laid­in­the­furrow­as­the­fi­eld­was­plowed.This gave the desired depth. It was done when I was a boy (in Schaefferstown, Lebanon County) and I have seen it done within recent years.

Potatoes planted “im Schteebock warre so hatt wie Schtee un mer kann sie net gut weech koche.” Potatoes planted “im Wassermann warre wesserich.”

Blight was known as “Mildau.” “Der Mildau is an die Grumbiere.” (There is blight at the potatoes.)

The cultivation of potatoes was like that of corn. The heaping­up­in­the­fi­nal­act­of­cultivation­was­done­with­the“Welschkannblug” or with a “Schaufelblug.” When potatoes were plowed out (the old way) either with a “Schaufelblug” or with a regular plow, it was spoken of as “Grumbiere ausbluge.”

Modern potato machinery: “Grumbiereschneider, Grumbiereblanzer, Grumbiereschpreher, Grumbiereausmacher.”

Meatloaf is a classic comfort food that is perfect for dinner when cold winter weather starts to set in. Everyone seems to have their own variation, whether it’s a family recipe passed down through generations, or an updated version with a modern twist or unusual ingredients. We asked readers to share their favorite recipes with us. We received many responses, including those below. Meatloaf

Hope Weaver, Ephrata

oatmeal, uncooked

Glaze:

tablespoons brown sugar 1½ tablespoons vinegar 1½ tablespoons mustard 1 cup ketchup

Mix meatloaf ingredients and place in a greased baking dish. Combine glaze ingredients and spread on top of meatloaf. Bake at 350°F for 1 hour.

Ham Loaf

Pat Roth, Ephrata

2 lbs. ham loaf mix onions to taste

1 cup bread crumbs

1 egg, beaten

1 cup milk

Mix ingredients together and form into loaves. Recipe makes 10 small loaves or 1 large loaf. Place in a baking dish or large pan.

Glaze:

¾ cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon mustard

¼ cup vinegar

¼ cup water

1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine glaze ingredients. Pour mixture over the loaves or loaf.

Bake for 1 hour or a little more in a 350°F oven.

Meatloaf/ Tater Tot Casserole

2 lbs. hamburger

1 can tomato sauce salt and pepper

2 eggs

½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce onion, diced bread crumbs (to your desired consistency)

1 can cream of mushroom soup

2 lbs. tater tots

Mix­fi­rst­seven­ingredientsto make a meatloaf. Form into a loaf in a greased baking dish. Bake meatloaf for 30 minutes at 350°F degrees.

Add the soup on top and then spread the tater tots in a single layer. Bake an additional 30 minutes.

Serves 8. Serve with veggie and salad.

Mushroom Meatloaf

Gloria Dougherty, Akron

“If you don’t like mushrooms, which I don’t, you won’t even taste them. They make the meatloaf very moist!”

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 small onion, diced (1 cup)

8 oz. white mushrooms, finely diced

1 small carrot, finely grated

2 tablespoons tomato paste

½ teaspoon dried thyme

1 clove garlic, minced

½ cup fresh parsley

¾ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1½ lbs. extra lean ground beef (90% lean or higher)

¾ cup quick-cooking oats

2 large eggs, beaten

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

8 oz. can no salt added tomato sauce

1 tablespoon prepared mustard

1 tablespoon unsulphered molasses

Preheat oven to 350°F. Heat oil in a large skillet. Add the onion and mushrooms and cook until the liquid is evaporated and the mushrooms begin to brown, about 8 minutes. Stir in the carrots, tomato paste, thyme and garlic and cook, stirring, 2 minutes more. Cool completely.

In a large bowl, combine the beef, oats, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, mushroom mixture, salt and pepper. Mix until just combined. Transfer mixture to a 9”x13” baking dish. Pack tightly so loaf stays together. Shape loaf about 5” wide and 2” high.

In a small bowl, whisk the tomato sauce, molasses and mustard; pour over the meatloaf.

Cook meatloaf until meat thermometer registers 160°F, about 55 to 60 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest 15 minutes before serving.

Classic Meatloaf

Martha Hoover, Ephrata

1 tablespoon butter

1 onion, chopped

½ cup ketchup

1 egg, beaten

1 tablespoon white vinegar

1 tablespoon cornmeal

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon pepper

1 cup cracker crumbs

1 lb. ground beef

Topping:

1/3 cup ketchup

1 tablespoon brown sugar

2 teaspoons yellow mustard

several drops liquid smoke

In a small skillet, melt butter and sauté onion until starting to brown. Set aside to cool.

In a medium bowl, mix together ketchup, egg, vinegar, cornmeal, brown sugar, salt and pepper. Stir well. Fold in sautéed onions, cracker crumbs and ground beef, and mix just until combined. Overmixing can cause a tough and dense meatloaf.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and form into a 4”x9” loaf. Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 160°F.

To make topping, stir together ingredients in a small bowl. Spread over top of cooked meatloaf. Broil at 400°F for 10 minutes more, or just until top caramelizes. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting so that meatloaf stays together.

Glazed Meatloaf

Anna Martin, Ephrata

2 lbs. ground beef

2 eggs 2/3 cup milk

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 cup bread or cracker crumbs

1 cup finely shredded carrots

½ cup chopped onion ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper ¼ teaspoon garlic powder glaze (see recipe below)

In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, cheese, bread crumbs, carrots, onion, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Shape into a loaf in pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350°F for 50 minutes. Spoon glaze over top. Continue baking 10 to 15 minutes.

Glaze: ½ cup brown sugar

½ cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

Combine ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 3 to 5 minutes.

Make-aMeal-of-It Meatloaf

Jenny Grove, Akron

1¼ lbs. lean ground beef 2/3 cup evaporated milk

½ cup bread crumbs or cracker crumbs

¼ cup ketchup

2 teaspoons salt, divided ½ teaspoon pepper, divided 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

3 medium potatoes

3 medium carrots

2 teaspoons parsley flakes or freshly chopped parsley

Heat oven to 375°F.

Combine the meat, milk, crumbs, ketchup, 1 teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl; blend really well (hands work best). Shape the mixture into a loaf and

place in the center of a baking dish.

Peel the potatoes and carrots and cut into ¼” slices. Arrange vegetables in layers around the meat. Sprinkle each layer with the remaining 1 teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.

Sprinkle top layer with chopped parsley.

Cover pan tightly with foil or lid. Bake for 1 hour or until vegetables are forktender. Uncover and bake 10 additional minutes to brown the meat.

Attendees for the 9th Annual Jingle Bell Trolley Tour began their tour on Friday, December 9, with Family Night at Ephrata Church of the Brethren. Fun things were on hand, crafts, a face painter, Santa, and Rudolph was there too!

Javateas Gourmet Cafe provided hot chocolate while Ephrata Church of the Brethren provided cookies to enjoy while waiting for the trolleys. Beulah’s Candyland provided candy for festive goodie bags.

Lightly mix all ingredients except for ¼ cup of catsup. Mold mixture into a 9”x5”x3” loaf pan. Spread the top with the remaining ¼ cup of catsup. Bake in a 375°F oven for 1¼ hours.

Mexicali Meatloaf

1½ lbs. ground beef

¾ cup salsa

1 egg

½ cup crushed Ritz crackers

6 oz. shredded cheddar cheese

Combine beef, salsa, egg, crackers and half of shredded cheese. Form into a loaf and put in a pan.

Bake at 350°F for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Top with remaining cheese for the last 2 minutes of bake time.

Bacon Swiss Meatloaf

1 egg

¼ cup milk

½ cup bread crumbs

½ teaspoon onion powder

1½ lbs. ground beef

1½ cups shredded Swiss cheese, divided

1 cup crumbled bacon, divided

Mix all ingredients together except 1/2 cup cheese and 1/4 cup bacon.

Bake, uncovered, at 350°F

Reuben Meatloaf

1½ lbs. ground beef

1½ cups rye bread crumbs

1½ teaspoon salt

½ cup chopped onions

1 egg

14 oz. can sauerkraut

Swiss cheese, either grated or strips

In a large bowl, combine meat, breadcrumbs, egg and salt. Place one half of mixture in a loaf pan. Cover with sauerkraut. Sprinkle cheese over the sauerkraut layer. Place rest of the meat mixture over all.

Bake at 350°F for about 45 minutes.

Note: If you want to double the recipe, it can be baked in a springform pan and unmolded. It slices like a

cake and is very attractive. The­center­can­be­fi­lled­withmashed potatoes.

Conversation Peace

“Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel” (Phil. 1:27).

Interestingly, whenever Paul uses the phrase “stand fast,” it is always to challenge people to stand fast in an area in which they were not standing fast! For instance, he tells the Corinthians to “stand fast in the faith” (I Cor. 16:13), for they had lost their faith in one of the fundamentals of the faith, the resurrection (I Cor. 15:12­50). He told the Galatians to “stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free” (Gal. 5:1) because they were forsaking grace for the law. He told the Thessalonians to “stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught” (II Thes. 2:15), especially the “tradition” of working for a living (3:7­12). The

Thessalonians had become so excited about the Rapture that many of them quit their jobs in anticipation of the Lord’s coming!

But here in Philippians 1:27, Paul tells the Philippians to “stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the

faith of the gospel.” This is because two ladies in the church were quarreling (4:2), and some in the church were siding with Euodias and some with Syntyche. “Striving together” is the Greek word sunathleo. The prefi­x­ sun means together with, and athleo is the word from which we get athlete and athletics. Athletes are often teammates who must strive together to achieve a common victory, and this is what Paul was calling on the Philippians to do for the cause of Christ.

Notice Paul isn’t talking about faith in the gospel. The faith of the gospel is our faithfulness or fidelity to maintaining the gospel as God gave it, just as old

“high-fi­”­or­ “high-fidelity” records claimed to be highly faithful to the sound recorded in the studio. We are to strive together­to­maintain­fi­delityto the gospel God gave to Paul.

Finally, Paul does not say we should strive with one another for the faith of the gospel. He rather says we should be striving “together” as those who see the fellowship of the mystery with those who don’t. With all the talk about “peace on earth”, how refreshing it would be if we could enjoy the “conversation peace” Paul longed to see in Philippi! (Psa. 133:1; Eph. 4:3).

Akron Lions Club Spread Christmas Cheer

With the feeling of Christmas in the air, the Akron Lions have been spreading their Christmas cheer around the Akron community. After working on their budget, it was decided to present the Akron Elementary School with a check of $1,300 for needy families in the school.

Principal Sheri Horner also said that many of the schoolteachers contribute to the needs of these families.

Then on Saturday, December 17, Akron members gathered at the Weiser’s Market, where hams, turkeys and gift certificates were put in 19 bags to be distributed to families in the Akron area to be sure of a good Christmas dinner.

Their next project will be the famous Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, January 29 at the Akron Fire Hall. The dinner had not been held for two years, and the secret sauce

Adamstown Library Events

Adamstown Area Library is located at 110 West Main Street in Adamstown, next to the post office. Library hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Adamstown Area Library has a variety of new and returning events in 2023. There are Winter Reading challenges, new story times, crafts, and much more. All events are free and open to the public.

“Pieces From The Past” continues this week, featuring the Lititz Historical Foundation. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies.

Moravian Dolls

What did Moravian women wear in Lititz during the 18th century? To

answer that question, and also to raise funds for the Lititz Historical Foundation, thirty-five women formed a committee to sew clothing for dolls to illustrate what a typical Moravian woman of Lititz might wear. All clothing items were hand sewn by different groups, each focusing on one of the

items: the white shift, the jacket, skirt, apron, haube (cap), lacing. The reticules or handbags were crocheted.

The color of the haube strings and the lacing in the jacket shows the status of the woman. The doll on the left has blue lacing, indicating she is married.

Each doll’s handbag contains a short biography. The doll with a blue ribbon identified her as Anna Maria Frederick Mueller, the wife of Johannes Mueller, the town dyer. The doll with the pink ribbon represented Anna Maria’s daughter Susannah. Eventually, male dolls were also represented with this collection. Lucy Becker 8th Grade

Lucy Becker is a cheerful, carefree, energetic young lady. She lives in Terre Hill and attends Bowmansville Mennonite Church. Her favorite thing to do at church is youth group. She is the oldest of five kids. She has two brothers and twin sisters.

Some of her hobbies include reading The Boxcar Children books, hanging out with friends, making food for her family, and watching movies. What she enjoys most about school is hanging out with friends. Her favorite class in school is Social Studies. Lucy is also a member of the ’22-23 Yearbook Committee.

After Lucy graduates from 8th grade this year at Gehmans, she will be attending either Crossroads or Garden Spot High School. Lucy’s dream job is to become an interior designer and be a businesswoman in that field.

I asked Lucy if she could change one thing in the world, what would it be. And she said, “I would eliminate abortion.” Two people Lucy admires are Abbi Musser for her kindness and Renee Martin because she is a strong Christian.

Lucy’s dream vacation would be to Hawaii or Europe. Her favorite sport is volleyball, and she really likes Jolly Ranchers. She loves Chinese and Italian food. If you ever get a chance to meet Lucy, she will definitely have a smile on her face, and she’ll be laughing. She will probably make you laugh too.

How does American life differ from life in other countries?

To answer this question, I talked with an exchange student who’s living in Lancaster County and attending Garden Spot High School this school year.

Local families provide a home for high school students from all over the world, in order to give them a full, immersive American experience. They attend our public schools, travel parts of the East Coast, and experience normal, everyday American life.

Children in many other countries start learning English and other languages as young as first grade, which makes the transition to American schools a bit easier, at least from a language perspective.

Paula Fluegel, a G.S. exchange student from Germany, spoke about the differences between her home country and her experiences living in America.

“Everything is so much bigger! The food, cars, buildings,” Fluegel said.

One thing that she repeated multiple times was about the food we consume on a daily basis. She says not only are our portions larger and generally more unhealthy, but our food is also extremely expensive compared to food prices in Germany.

According to Fluegel, the academic rigor of school in America seems to be easier and more enjoyable than school in Germany. She says that school in her home country feels more like university coursework, because the focus is entirely and strictly on academics, not socializing and building relationships.

Although there are many amazing things about the experience of being an exchange student, Fluegel is candid that it also comes with its own set of troubles. The language barrier can make it difficult to communicate with some people and casual conversations can be difficult.

Nevertheless, the experience is amazing for not only the students but also for the people who get to know them. We can learn as much from them as they can from us.
