Members of the Akron Lions Club recently got together to distribute 26 bags of food items for a Christmas dinner to some of their Akron neighbors. Due to the COVID19 virus, their
fundraising opportunities have been cancelled, but not their willingness to serve their fellow neighbors in need. The club held a Go Fund Me project, which brought in some funds, and
they thank all who helped to contribute. The Lions distribute these food bags every year, and this year is no exception. The club put up Christmas lights on the band shelter pavilion in

Thoughts, thanks, A breakoftheday vine; We bless well The past, Much beautiful pleasure, Goodhearted people.
*** Since most of you will most likely be reading this Eck the day after Memorial Day, we thought appropriate to acquaint you with an unusual and problematic poem by Dr. Russell W. Gilbert, Emeritus Professor of German at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove in Snyder County. Gedeshtnisdaag is unusual in that it first examines Memorial Day as we know it today, but then the poet turns his attention to the ancient holidays of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days and the beliefs that were associated with these days in the past. It is no accident that our Halloween (according to Webster’s Dictionary, short for “All Hallow Even”), always falls on October 31. The poet tells us that his word “Daagsbruchrank” is his own coinage and is to be understood as “a daily link between us and those who have passed on.” We are indebted to Professor Gilbert for a thoughtful and provocative poem. All of their electronic resources (including their e-book and e-audio col lection) continue to be available: https://lancaster libraries.overdrive.com/
and http://online.lancaster libraries.org. All library events are offered virtually online. All events and activities can be found on their event calendar at elancolibrary. org. They have 3 different types of Take and Makes - Toddler Storytime Care Packages (ages 1-3), Preschool Storytime Care Packages (3-6), and STEM on the GO! (Kindergarten and up). Please register by going to their website or calling the library at 717354-0525. Take and Makes will be ready for pickup on Monday, January 11. All bags must be picked up at the ELANCO Library by
Saturday, January 16 at 4:00 p.m. A face mask is required to enter the building. If you would prefer No-Contact Self Pickup, please contact Ms. Carla at cbarrows@ elancolibrary.org • Toddler Thursdays Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. - For All Ages, best for 1-3 year olds. They know you can’t come to the library for storytime, so they’re bringing storytime to you! You can find the livestream on ELANCO Library’s Facebook. If you don’t tune in, you will miss out!

With the start of a new year upon us, many in our area will be enjoying the traditional pork and sauerkraut for good luck in 2021. Folklore says that pork is the meat of choice because of the fact that pigs root in a forward direction while searching for food - the same way we want to be heading in the new year. To keep us moving in the right direction all month long, we asked readers to share their favorite recipes with us. We received many responses, including those below. To view all of the recipes submitted, along with those submitted for past Hometown Flavors sections, visit www.snews.com.

THIS WEEK’S
Biblical Message
Creation
by Pastor Paul M. Sadler “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day” (Gen. 1:3-5).
I am a creationist. I personally believe that God created all things in heaven and earth in six literal 24hour days. A proper understanding of creation is essential, since it is the foundation upon which all the doctrines of God rest. Sadly, some in Christendom have sought to erect an elaborate system known as the dayage theory to accommodate the geologic timetable of billions of years. But does this position pass the Berean test? Those who subscribe to the dayage theory believe that the Hebrew word “day” (yom) can refer to a 24hour day or a long period of time. This is true! For example, the day of the Lord is an extended period of time which covers
well over one thousand years. Consequently, the context must always be consulted to ascertain the duration of time under consideration. Of course, those who defend this position teach that the
days of the Genesis record quite literally cover millions and millions of years, which conveniently accommodates evolution. Interestingly, when the Hebrew word yom is used
with a number, it always refers to a 24hour day, without exception. In regard to the Passover, God instructed Moses, “Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel” (Ex. 12:15). Would we conclude otherwise that the “first day” here is anything other than a normal day? Furthermore, when perimeters are set on the term yom, such as “the evening and the morning,” as found in Genesis 1:4, this limits the day to 24 hours. But perhaps the most conclusive evidence of all

that each day was 24 hours is found in Exodus 20:11: “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Here Moses uses the term yamin, the Hebrew plural for “days,” which exclusively speaks of 24hour cycles. If the Holy Spirit had intended to convey that the days of creation were “eras,” He would have used the used the Hebrew olam, which is defined as “indefinite time.” We accept by faith that God is sovereign and allpowerful; therefore, it was a small matter for Him to speak all things into existence in six days (Psa. 33:69).

Senior Leadership Transition Coming to Petra Church In New Holland Lester and Erma Zimmerman (shown in the left photo), Senior Pastors at Petra Church, New Holland, will conclude 38 years of service on Sunday, January 3, 2021. The baton of senior leadership will be passed to Brian Coles, Leola. Brian and his wife Tracy (shown in the right photo) served as Student Ministries Pastors at Petra since August of 2016. They led both the Middle School and High School Ministries and launched a ministry to Young Adults. Three years later, in 2019, Brian was named Associate Pastor with the goal of him eventually assuming the role of Lead Pastor. Tracy will be serving as Local Outreach Pastor. Pastor Lester Zimmer man will transition to an expanded role giving leadership and oversight to the Hopewell Network of Churches. Petra began as a small group of believers from Hopewell Mennonite Church, Elverson, which was experiencing a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the 1970s and 80s. At the time, Lester and Erma Zimmerman were working in church-planting and inner-city ministry in Baltimore, Maryland. In
1981, after the birth of their daughter, Amy, they took a break from this ministry and moved to the New Holland area. They began attending the Hopewell Church, joined a small group which met in New Holland, and in the course of time, responded to God’s call to head up Hopewell’s New Holland church plant. Petra’s first Sunday morning service was held
on January 9, 1983, in the New Holland Fire Hall. By the end of that first year, the church had doubled in number to approximately 100 adventurous people who drew together in worship every Sunday. The emphasis of the young church was on Jesus, our hope and joy; worship, led by a contemporary music team; small group fellowship; good teaching;
wholesome activities for children and youth; prayer; outreach; and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. After several years of meeting at the Fire Hall, the Lord led the congregation to a portion of land that was originally part of the New Holland Airport. Land was purchased in 1985 and the original Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall constructed in 1987.

An Educational Wing was added in 1991; a neighboring farm purchased in 2004; an enlarged Sanctuary built in 2000; and a Student Life Center added in 2016. “Throughout our 38-year journey – with tremendous growth in attendance, staff, ministries, and outreach – Pastors Lester and Erma have served with humility, faith, wisdom, courage, and integrity,” according to Ken Reinford, Executive Pastor of Ministries. A Night of Honor on behalf of Pastors Lester and Erma Zimmerman was held on Saturday, November 7. The evening featured worship through the ages, special video presentations, a light and water show, gifts of honor, and a time of prayer and blessing.

Reamstown Fire Company No. 1 was chartered as a community fire department in 1906. During the 1950s, an ambulance was added to provide medical services and support to firefighters and the community. The department services part of East Cocalico Township and a small portion of Ephrata Township, with their first due coverage area consisting of approximately 10 square miles, diversified with residential, agriculture, commercial and industrial development, as well as providing emergency services on Route 222. Reamstown Fire Company has approximately 30 active personnel under the leadership of Fire Chief Scott Achey (shown in the bottom left photo), responding to an average of 200 fire calls and 1,200 emergency medical calls annually. Their personnel train every Tuesday evening and attend many special training classes during a year. A few examples of training are Hazmat, first aid/CPR, vehicle rescue, safety and survival. Everyone is welcome to stop by on a Tuesday evening and observe and ask questions about what the department does. They are always looking for more volunteers to join their ranks. In addition to firefighting personnel, they have an outstanding support group that helps in many ways to keep them moving forward. Shown in the top left photo, from left to right, are members: (kneeling) Joe Zimmerman, Captain; Matt Strasser, Firefighter; and Kelly Morgan, Assistant Chief; (standing) Jason Smith, Captain; Dennis Gaul, Deputy Chief; and Gabe Leskuskey, Firefighter; Whitney Rossi, EMS; and Rick Carpenter, EMS Captain. The fire company holds multiple fundraisers each year, including toll road collection, their annual fund drive, chicken barbecue sales, bingo, pork dinner sales and breakfasts. They are also involved in numerous community events, including working with the East Cocalico Lions Club to provide a children’s Christmas party, taking trucks out on Halloween to hand out fire safety bags and goodies for children out trick or treating, providing personnel and equipment to support the National Night Out held in August in Reamstown Park, and participating in parades for special occasions, such as sports team victories. Those looking to help the fire company in a non-fire fighting manner can help with fundraising, administrative duties, technology and support during large emergency events, such as providing beverages and food. Monetary donations can be sent to P.O. Box 276, Reamstown, PA 17567. Visit The Shopping News of Lancaster County on Facebook to see more photos of the Reamstown Fire Company.

“Pieces From The Past” - The New Holland Area Historical Society
“Pieces From The Past” continues this week, featuring the New Holland Area Historical Society Museum. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies. The New Holland Machine Company, a manufacturer of farming tools and equipment beginning in 1895, rose to
early fame with this halfhorsepower engine. It was known in the industry as a “hit or miss” engine since the one cylinder fired in an uneven cadence. It featured a patented freezeproof tapered water jacket, which quickly became a farmer’s favorite and put this fledgling company on the map. Forty-five years later the company became known worldwide as the maker of the New Holland Hay Baler.
The New Holland Area Historical Society Museum features a large exhibit of memorabilia from the company, now known as Case New Holland, celebrating their 125th
