Mayo Clinic Rochester named the best in the nation again by U.S. News & World Report
Photos by Chad Johnson
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester remains the best in the nation in recent rankings released by the U.S. News & World Report. In the 2019-2020 list, the Mayo Clinic Rochester was ranked first for the fourth year in a row. The local organization also nabbed the top ranking for medical specialty areas. The U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals Honor Roll” features the 20 U.S. hospitals with the highest overall scores in 16 medical and surgical specialties, and nine common procedures and conditions. To be ranked, organizations are measured on survival, experience, nurse staffing, patient services and reputation with other specialists. In other areas, Mayo Clinic in Rochester was ranked second in six specialty areas including, Cardiology and Heart Surgery, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Pulmonology and Lung Surgery. The local facility was ranked third in Cancer. U.S. News & World Report analyzed data collected from nearly 5,000 medical centers and survey responses from more than 30,000 physicians to compile its annual “Best Hospitals” rankings.
Rochester is a unique city with a welcoming Midwest flavor, a small-town feel and an evergrowing sophistication. Nestled in the Zumbro River Valley, Rochester was discovered in 1854 by a government surveying party from Winona. Population at the time was 1,500 (30 times the original 50 settlers after an advertising campaign succeeded in extolling the land’s virtues). Rochester has been expanding and developing ever since, boasting a world-class medical center, expanding job market, cutting edge technology, excellent schools and a livable, safe environment. Money Magazine frequently votes Rochester “Best Place to Live in the U.S.” Since the first votes in the 1990’s, the city has grown 33 percent from a population of 86,000 to 114,011 plus (2016 U.S Census Bureau). The city is also considered a “Best Small City For Working Women.” Unemployment is low and salaries are higher than average, with women making 90 percent of men’s salaries.
RECESSION RESISTANT
As things change, some things stay the same, and it’s all good for Rochester. In 1961, Sales Management magazine listed Rochester as one of its “markets on the move,” pointing out
that the city was moving forward while much of the country was in a recession. Urban and economic theorist Richard Florida recently ranked Rochester among the top 20 metros with projected job growth in “creative class” jobs—health care, science, technology, law, education, the arts and media—through 2020 (The Atlantic). Rochester’s quality of life and prosperous business climate make it a desirable place to live and work. Cost of living is 7 percent lower than the U.S. average. Its commute is the shortest—average 14 minutes—of the nation’s 300 largest cities. There’s an excellent park system for walking, biking and outdoor family activities. “Historic Bluff Country” to the south, the Mississippi River to the east, rolling farmlands to the west, and the Twin Cities to the north border Rochester and neighboring communities.
MAYO CLINIC, IBM
A devastating tornado struck Rochester in 1883. William Worrall Mayo, the country doctor, sought help from the Sisters of St. Francis to care for over 100 injured patients. When the crisis passed, Mother Alfred Moes offered to raise money to build a hospital if Dr. Mayo and his sons, Will and Charlie, would serve as surgeons. Today, Mayo Clinic is the largest not-forprofit medical center in the world. The Clinic employs nearly 34,600 people at its
By Katherine Shine
City on the Move Rochester campus. Approximately 2,400 are physicians and scientists. The opening of Mayo’s Gonda Building in 2001 created the largest interconnected medical facility in the world. Opened in 2015, a $188 million, 100,000-square-foot proton beam therapy center offers innovative cancer treatments. IBM, like Mayo Clinic, is an “anchor” company in Rochester. “Big Blue” broke ground in 1956. Employees number around 2,790 (2013), two times more than the number of employees in the 1950s. The main campus has grown to 3.1 million square feet, more than half the size of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Other major employers include Charter Communications, City of Rochester, Federal Medical Center, Kahler Hotels, McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing, Olmsted County, Olmsted Medical Center, and Seneca Foods.
INNOVATION, GROWTH, INVESTMENT
Destination Medical Center (DMC) is the biggest and boldest expansion plan in Rochester’s 164-year history. With the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in the city’s backyard, DMC is a $5.6 billion economic development initia-
tive promoting Rochester as a premier global destination for health and wellness over the next 20 years. Three million people a year visit Rochester, primarily for Mayo Clinic. The goal of DMC is to double the number of visitors to 6 to 7 million. Downtown development has been a topic of conversation since the famous Chateau Theater opened its doors in 1927. DMC plans include additional downtown Mayo facilities, office space, biotech and pharmaceutical firms. Housing, restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments will be needed to accommodate visitors and the employees required to fill over 30,000 new jobs. DMC, according to plan, will have a positive affect not only Rochester, but also Olmsted County and the state of Minnesota. In addition to the $585 million in state money, Mayo Clinic, private investors and the City of Rochester will invest nearly $6 billion. With changes on its horizon, Rochester must continue fine-tuning its goals to meet the inevitable challenges ahead: aging and retiring Baby Boomers, diversity, affordable housing for students and job seekers, transportation, crime and population increases. If history is an indicator, Rochester’s growth will continue on a positive, upward trend.

If you are breathing, you are aging. At 125 LIVE in Rochester, the goal is to make sure no one from 18 years and up ages in a silo. Every adult can benefit from exercise and fitness programs to social clubs, games and programs in arts.
Daily shows give guests a chance to learn more about the animals, and pet a few of them at shows end. During weekend feeding times, guests can watch many of the snakes and crocodiles dining.
The Pastikas are constantly working on new exhibits. This summer they hope to have sailfin dragons as well as a tank of South American river turtles. Pastika said that there are many satisfying aspects of being a zookeeper, like taking care of the animals by trying to build them homes similar to what they would experience in the wild. He enjoys watching excited kids interact directly with the animals. "Our goal at the Zoo is to try to instill a greater appreciation for wildlife and wild places among our children so that they will grow up to help preserve them."

The City of Zumbrota warmly welcomes you to enjoy all of our fantastic amenities. A must see for all visitors is the Historic Covered Bridge spanning the Zumbro River at West Avenue. Minnesota’s only remaining original covered bridge is listed on the National Historic Register. It has been restored to its authentic state, reflecting the heritage of early pioneer settlers. The bridge is nestled just upstream from its original location over the Zumbro River in the 85-acre Covered Bridge Park. Kid’s Kingdom in Covered Bridge Park is also the trailhead for the Goodhue Pioneer State Trail, a multi-modal trail which connects with the cities of Goodhue and Red Wing. So please, take the time to check out the many exciting opportunities Zumbrota has to offer!

If you’re headed here for your first visit or 20th, make sure you try out our new Lanesboro App. It will provide you up-to-date, contactless information on local businesses, including hours, amenities, and Covid-19 practices. It also features a user-friendly glossary to help you find what businesses have ice, firewood, hand sanitizer, locallymade face masks, and more. Our unique variety of lodging establishments have diligently adopted Covid-19 measures to safely welcome you back with distanced energetic waves and air hugs.
Lanesboro Rolls Out the Red Carpet Lanesboro, Minnesota, a one-of-a-kind arts and recreation small town, rolls out the red carpet in 2021 for another season of relaxation, recreation, storytelling, and daily appreciation of sunrises and sunsets. Lanesboro continues to work hard through the challenges of the pandemic to “make the health and safety of guests, residents, and employees our top priority,” while still providing refreshing respite in the great outdoors and along our quaint downtown sidewalks. Located in the heart of southeast Minnesota’s breathtaking “Bluff Country,” Lanesboro offers biking, hiking, canoeing, tubing, kayaking, fishing, live theater and music, delicious restaurants, a brewery (first one after more than 100 years!), golf, familyfriendly camping, comfy B&Bs, and inspiring art. Our proud small-town businesses are rolling out their red carpets to welcome you back to enjoy the wonders of Lanesboro.
Find your home away from home by staying at one of our unique lodging establishments such as the Cottage House Inn, the Habberstad House B&B, the Historic Scanlan House B&B Inn, the Scandinavian Inn, Grandma’s, or Stone Mill Hotel & Suites. Just outside of Lanesboro is Sacred Clay Country Inn and their Wedding Barn. Four miles up Highway 16 in historic Whalan you’ll find the Cedar Valley Resort. All provide comfortable and quality rooms and cabins, amenities for different-sized groups, and excellent service. Our restaurants, pubs, and treat shops will provide you with friendly service and delectable home-made food you love. Ready to welcome you back is the Parkway Market and Coffee House, Home Sweet Home Cafe and Cakery, the High Court Pub and our new Loubelle’s Ice Cream & Sandwich Shoppe. Head east on the bike trail to treat yourself at Aroma Pie Shoppe and the Whalan Depot. Look for Lanesboro’s expanded outdoor dining options, and don’t forget that Sylvan Park is a great place to enjoy your take-out meals. The town’s fun variety of specialty shops and services are waiting for you to come and shop safely. Granny’s Liquor, E2 Boutique, Amish Experience, and Root River Rod Fly Fishing
Outfitters & Guides are ready with their Covid-19 procedures and friendly hellos. A stop at the Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center walk-up window will help you plan your visit and get your questions answered. Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center, just a few miles outside of town, is a great place to bird watch, hike, and experience the thrill of a high ropes course. Or, ventue underground in Niagara Cave to witness our Karst geology. Memorable Lanesboro events and festivals were missed in 2020, but some are getting ready to celebrate in adapted ways in 2021. History Alive! Pop Up Plays “tell the stories of Lanesboro on the streets of Lanesboro.” Many artists, like painter Joni Finnegan, call Lanesboro and this area home, and you can visit their studios in-person during the Lanesboro Area Art Trail.
Lanesboro Arts will host “Rhythms on the Root” live outdoor music concerts this summer, and their galleries will be hosting various exhibitions which are free and open to the public. Ready to take you on a storytelling journey with thoughtful and safe pandemic procedures in place, the Commonweal Theatre offers five plays from April to December, including “I Love to Eat,” and “Dancing Lessons.” Lanesboro is known for its natural beauty, arts, and outdoor recreation, a place to truly relax and savor the vibe of a small town. We invite you to walk the red carpets in Lanesboro and enjoy the trail, river, restaurants, pubs, theatre, arts, Inns, shops, festivals, and another sunrise and sunset in our beautiful corner of the world. You’ll love the Historic Sheldon Theatre from the moment you enter! Built in 1904, the Sheldon Theatre was a stop for acts traveling from Chicago to the Twin Cities. In 1988, after two major fires and spending nearly 80 years as a first-class movie house, it was restored to a performing arts theater and elegantly updated in 2018. Our mission to entertain, educate and enlighten brings tremendous variety to the Sheldon stage each season. We combine small-town hospitality and world-class artists for unforgettable experiences. From live music to theatre, dance and comedy, you’re sure to find the show for you. Just in town for the day? We invite you to stop by for a self-guided tour and see the original 1904 French tiled mosaic floors, Italian marble columns, and Austrian crystal chandeliers. This “jewel box” theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Come experience the history--or be a part of it and attend a show. Call for last minute ticket availability! We’d love to welcome you! Visit SheldonTheatre.org or call 651-388-8700 for box office hours. Sheldon Theatre|443 W. 3rd St|Red Wing, MN
