Life is about mom ents A proud history Baume & Mercier’s story begins in 1830 in the Swiss Jura Mountains, and in the nearly two centuries since its founding has been a part of countless memories. The founders of Baume & Mercier made the pursuit of excellence their motto, stating, “Accept only perfection; only manufacture watches of the highest quality.” Throughout its history the brand has never lost sight of this goal, and today’s Baume & Mercier watches still express the founders’ commitment to perfection in every detail. Life is about moments Today, Baume & Mercier is firmly entrenched in its new territory of seaside living in the Hamptons—a place that underscores the brand’s values of family sharing, emotional togetherness, rich authenticity and casual relaxed elegance. From these core philosophies inherent in both Baume & Mercier’s rich heritage and the Hamptons’ long lineage, the brand has further developed its motto that “Life is about moments.” It is Baume & Mercier’s mission   to be that natural keeper of life’s celebrated moments—and to do so in a style that is definitively its own. Baume & Mercier’s authentic spirit graces each collection As the art of living takes on new dimensions that parallel the brand’s vision, Baume & Mercier artfully rises to the challenge of designing and creating spirited timepieces. The brand is rich with four immediately identifiable and individualistic key collections. The newest watches in each of these collections are inherently powerful and smart—with design and technical innovations that reflect Baume & Mercier’s contemporary approach and emphasize its dedication to today’s lifestyles and significant moments. They are timepieces of superb quality that underscore the brand’s more than 180 years of excellence in craftsmanship.

Linea

T

he iconic Linea for women is the perfect blend of style and femininity, embracing succinct elements geared for today’s woman. The harmonious, alluring timepieces in this series offer a timeless elegance that complements its very modern and versatile, easy-to-use interchangeable strap system. The historic timepiece which serves as the inspiration for the newly redesigned Linea distinguished itself by its Arabic numerals engraved on a large guilloché bezel. These prominent numerals enlivened the watch face and rendered the dial suddenly more discreet, giving the entire piece a distinctive visual identity. Perfectly integrated with the case middle, the bracelet accentuated the idea of the watch as a piece of jewelry.

Linea

The generously curved Linea line offers women more versatility and design delights than ever before, underscoring its tag line: “My Linea—I wear it like this. This year, there are two important new 32 mm automatic watches joining the Linea lineup in recognition of the fact that women appreciate sophisticated mechanics. One model is a stunning two-tone version with a silver-colored dial with gilt hands and indexes, while the other is a steel-on-steel edition with iridescent mother-of-pearl dial and diamonds. Also new this year is a 32 mm quartz version with a beautiful trapezoidal diamond bezel setting that, against the round case, brings new geometric dimension to the elegant timepiece.

Linea

In addition to the existing 32 mm quartz chronograph models, the 27 mm Linea with polished and satined finishes offers delightful charm and fits the wrist so magnificently that it epitomizes comfort. With its round, feminine lines, Linea proposes several dials including a silver-colored dial and an alluring mother-of-pearl dial with diamond markers. Every 27 mm steel-on-steel watch features an interchangeable bracelet that comes with an additional strap: calfskin for the steel models and luxurious satin for set steel models. There is also a wonderful light brown wrap around calfskin strap offered with warm ecru stitching for a casual chic appeal.

Capeland

T

he sport-chic, adventurous Capeland collection for men is the chronograph of authentic moments. With its rich vintage inspiration, yet modern-day appeal, these casually elegant chronographs are enhanced with telemeter and tachymeter functions that underscore the brand’s commitment to both excellence and design. Inspired by a vintage 1948 single push-piece chronograph, the generous round case of Capeland is classic yet relaxed, and offers a distinctive look. Designed for easy daily wear, Capeland epitomizes strength of character and represents the brand’s universe of seaside living at its best.

26

Capeland

A point of pride within the Capeland collection: the emblematic watches, housing a Bi-Compax flyback chronograph movement, and available in gold or stainless steel. These exceptional watches distinguish themselves by a “chevé” shaped crystal, a domed dial in retro colors, and “Breguet“ style hands. Offered in both versions with a La Joux-Perret 8147-2 manufacture caliber, these models come with a brown or black alligator strap which gives them a final touch of sophistication.

28

Capeland

The epitome of sport-chic elegance, the Capeland is easily one of the most alluring, easy-to-wear timepieces thanks to its retro inspired yet contemporary design. These round watches, with chronograph, telemeter, tachymeter functions and Arabic numerals, are immediately identifiable and make a superb statement of individuality and taste. This year, the core collection sports a larger 44 mm case—something previously reserved only for the emblematic pieces. For the new watches, Baume & Mercier has developed an entirely new integrated, ergonomically curved metal bracelet as well as an alligator strap with a new adjustable triple folding security buckle. The polished and satin-finished stainless steel bracelet features curved links that emulate the “galet” curve of the case and sapphire crystal.

31

Capeland Collection

The newest 44 mm version with a light brown alligator strap joins the emblematic models—all endowed with the same wonderfully rich attributes. This new Capeland flyback chronograph based on the La Joux-Perret caliber enhanced in-house by Baume & Mercier, is now offered with a chic opaline black dial in a stainless steel case with gilt tachymeter scale and gilt “Breguet” shaped hands. Inspired by a Baume & Mercier single push-piece chronograph from 1948, the emblematic Capeland pieces are all equipped with “chevé” shaped sapphire crystals and sapphire case backs. These enable a view of the oscillating weight engraved with the brand’s emblematic Phi symbol, further adorned with “Côtes de Genève”   and snailed décor.

Hampton

Hampton

A

t the end of Highway 27 on Long Island lies a calm world where elegance is expressed in tiny pointillist strokes, like the neo-impressionist paintings of the first artists who settled in the Hamptons. Dandies in linen suits and young ladies in hats would sharpen their tastes by going from one studio to the next, ending up on the beach with a great vintage brought from Old Europe. These days, Hamptonites get together for private viewings or horse shows, with savoir-vivre as their only watchword, a relaxed way of living out one’s style, unostentatiously yet self-assertively. The Hampton collection fully captures the spirit of this magical place  —as well as the heritage and the philosophies of Baume & Mercier. In fact, it was a museum piece from the 1940s that served as the basis for the interpretation that gives the new Hampton watches their very distinctive character.

A historic Baume & Mercier timepiece from 1940

40

Hampton for m en

The captivating Hampton collection for men skillfully blends a highly distinctive rectangular case shape with strong architectural lines and features that reflect today’s casual yet sophisticated living. The angled form produces a prism effect that offers a different appeal to the watch depending on the angle from which one looks at it. These architectural elements easily reflect the grand homes that line the Hamptons shorelines. The men’s Hampton watches exist in a self-winding version with a small seconds hand at 6 o’clock, or an automatic chronograph version with counters sporting just a touch of red to dress up the dial. For 2012, two new automatic watches with an integrated polished and satin-finished bracelet with triple folding security clasp join the ranks and create a duo in line with the feminine models.

43

Hampton for wom en

The contemporary reinterpretation of the Hampton collection for women involves harmonious and fluid curves while at the same time conserving the highly distinctive rectangular shape and the satined domed volume of the original timepiece. On the core collection models, the wristband is made of satin, alligator or polished and satin-finished steel. The soft-toned sand-colored leather strap further echoes the brand’s relaxed seaside living territory and enhances the silver-colored dial with its gilt riveted Arabic numerals and hands. Various diamond settings on the dial and case are offered, lending a precious and elegant touch to these pieces.

45

Hampton for wom en

The line is enriched for 2012 with three smaller-sized models with a case that is charmingly alluring, especially with two shimmering mother-of-pearl dials and an integrated polished and satin-finished metal bracelet fitted with a new triple folding security clasp. The highlight of the Hampton ladies’ collection has a case fully set with 80 diamonds—lugs, satined domed volume and curved case side—that beautifully enhance the silvered dial and harmonize with the purity of the white alligator strap.

46

Hampton Collection

While the case middle’s sides are straight in the masculine core collection, the 18K red gold emblematic piece most resembles the piece that inspired it, with its highly stylized evocation of its Art Deco lines. It is pleasing to rediscover the famous curved case side, but on a larger case suitable for men who know their worth. The emblematic pieces are available in a steel automatic chronograph version with a manufacture movement, a power reserve of 65 hours and an open case back that reveals the oscillating weight personalized with the Phi symbol. The 18K red gold version offers a manual manufacture movement having a 42-hour power reserve and a superb oval open case back. Unlike the core collection watches, which feature riveted Arabic numerals, the emblematic pieces remain true to Roman numerals, with the intent of perpetuating the historic model. At once timeless and casually elegant, the Hampton emblematic pieces embody style and relaxed living at its finest.

180 years of Watchmaking expertise “Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality”

In the heart of watchmaking: Baume & Mercier at Les Brenets Though Baume & Mercier is headquartered in Geneva, it’s in the Swiss Jura where the company was founded in 1830, that   Baume & Mercier timepieces are created. The town of Les Brenets, where Baume & Mercier’s workshops are located today, is a quiet rural village, still surrounded as in centuries past by verdant forest—natural beauty that contrasts with the state-of-the-art sophistication of Baume & Mercier’s workshops.

Only the best from the établissage and watch manufactory The heart of traditional Swiss watchmaking is établissage, embodying the perfection of the art of assembling components which have been made to the highest technical and aesthetic standards. The practice of établissage in the Jura is hundreds of years old, and Baume & Mercier combines the best of this ancient tradition with the most modern methods. The assembly of each Baume & Mercier watch takes place under the hands of expert craftspersons, each of whom exercises the utmost vigilance in ensuring a perfect result. Even before assembly begins, each part undergoes rigorous inspection, and the actual assembly takes place in laboratory-grade clean rooms that are accessible only through special airlocks. Every aspect of each timepiece, from integrity of bracelets and straps to water resistance of the case, to correct function of each complication and adherence to strict standards of accuracy, is held to the rigorous standards first established by Baume & Mercier’s founding family in 1830.

180 years of Watchmaking expertise It is the alchemy achieved by the combination of the établissage tradition with the state-of-the-art methods of modern horology that gives each Baume & Mercier watch its unique character. Throughout its history Baume & Mercier has always striven to combine the pride in craftsmanship of traditional watchmaking methods with advanced technical know-how that have offered, over the centuries, reliability and precision in which the client can have the utmost confidence. Since the establishment of the Maison d’Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1900, then in Geneva in 1920, and through its presence in Le Brassus in the 1950s and down to the present day, Baume & Mercier has always kept the promise of its founders through the House’s motto: “Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality.”

Les Brenets, a watch casing-up atelier with stringent controls After the casing step, all the timepieces are subjected to strict control measures to meet with Baume & Mercier’s quality standards. Each watch is individually tested within accuracy, movement   power-reserve, functions and aesthetic controls.

A watch for a lifetime: service and restoration Baume & Mercier embraces the vision of a watch as a lifelong companion and to that end, offers expert service and restoration of its timepieces through a global service network that spares no effort to ensure that every Baume & Mercier watch is always at its best. Significantly, Baume & Mercier is one of the very few fine watchmaking houses that can repair and restore any watch it has ever made, including its precision and complicated pocket watches from the nineteenth century. A Baume & Mercier watch is always a worthy recipient of such dedicated attention, which fulfills in the present day the commitment to nothing less than perfection articulated by its founders. 73

O

ne hundred and eighty-two years seem like the blink of an eye in the infinite scheme of things. But for Baume & Mercier,  it is much less a blink than an eye-opener in just what this Swiss brand has accomplished in the nearly two centuries  since its founding. Today the company is focusing on its four  pillars, which include the Hampton, Capeland, Linea and  Classima collections. Each of these timeless and distinctive  timepieces has its roots in the past, since Baume & Mercier’s spirit of quality and commitment to fine watchmaking has remained unchanged over time. In fact, it was this very commitment to quality that led one visionary, William Baume, to another, Paul Mercier. But the story goes back much further.

I

t was a family business. The Baume family opened their watchmaking manufactory in the Jura region of Switzerland in 1830, and from there it grew, along with its reputation for creating wonderful timepieces that incorporated state-of-the-art innovations. The “Frères Baume”, as Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume’s company was called, expanded rapidly under their credo, “accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality”. Célestin opened a branch in London in 1851 and expanded throughout the British Empire. By the late 1800s, the company’s reputation began to achieve international status. The second generation of the Baume family watchmakers had taken the helm by 1876, and soon a branch in Geneva and Philadelphia sprouted up. By this time the brand was best known for its chronographs and grand complication models, including minute repeaters, calendars and tourbillons. It was also during this time that the company distinguished itself among other watch brands—winning ten Grand Prix awards and seven gold medals—at exhibitions and world fairs that were held during the latter half of the nineteenth

century in Paris, Melbourne, Zurich, Amsterdam, London and Chicago. Baume watches also set accuracy records in timekeeping competitions, and particularly the timing trials run by the Kew Observatory near London. In 1893, Baume earned the highest score in the competition with a split-second chronograph, an all-time record that remained unbeaten until over a decade later. But just as wristwatches began to replace pocket watches after World War I, the third generation of the Baume family came to the fore. It was also just before the beginning of the 1920s that the company took up primary residence in Geneva, where Paul Mercier became part of the family album by joining forces with William Baume. Baume & Mercier officially launched the eponymous firm in 1918, with Mercier responsible for design and sales and Baume in charge of the technical aspects of watchmaking. The company became one of the best-known watch manufacturers in Geneva and was awarded the coveted “Poinçon de Genève” quality hallmark in 1919. “Chronometer with tourbillon, awarded at Kew in 1893”

P

aul Mercier knew that it was important for the brand to follow society and this has always been a key point to the success of the brand. The 1920s were a turning point in Baume & Mercier’s history as the brand followed the culture of leisure time that was so popular during this period. The emancipation of women was one of the main changes which has rapidly become a source of inspiration for the brand. Considering femininity as an unquenchable source of inspiration, Baume & Mercier has established enduring yet constantly evolving ties with women. After World War II, Baume & Mercier launched one of its most successful models, the Marquise—a jewelry watch fitted with a band-style bracelet—and it remained a bestseller until the early 1960s. For Baume & Mercier, time in the feminine mode is not a miniaturized and somewhat simplistic interpretation of a masculine watch. Femininity is an integral part of the brand’s genetic code, as indeed is a decidedly modern-minded attitude.

lways at the forefront of new technology, the company was one of the first brands to adopt the new electronic tuning-fork movements in its Tronosonic model. This was followed in 1973 by the Riviera model, one of the very first steel sports watches. In 1988, the luxury group that would later become known as the Richemont Group bought both Baume & Mercier and Piaget, which had owned Baume & Mercier shares since 1963. As part of the Richemont Group, the company has flourished, introducing new models that have become brand icons. The Hampton, first introduced in 1994, has become one of the company’s flagship models. And in a step toward greater autonomy amidst a sea of luxury brands, the company opened its own workshop in Les Brenets in the Swiss Jura in 2002, returning to its roots in both geography and sentiment. What has followed is the creation of amazing new timepiece collections that capture the imagination and touch the soul. It seems that if one accepts nothing less than perfection, only good things result.
