On Saturday, May 31, 2014 the Jamaican Institute of Architects (JIA) will host the JIA Awards for Excellence in Architecture Awards ceremony 2014 at the Courtleigh Corporate Center’s auditorium in New Kingston. The Awards ceremony will be the culmination of a week-long series of events , starting with a church service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral on North Street, Kingston on Sunday, May 25, celebrating “Excellence through Architecture”. The prestigious Governor General’s Award in Architecture which will be presented by His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick L. Allen, ON, GCMG, CD, patron of the JIA, will be selected from those project entries that have received Awards of Merit in eight categories. The Awards ceremony is held every four years to stimulate public awareness of excellence in architectural design and practice, and to recognize the value that Architecture adds to the built and natural environment. The JIA is proud to have Prof. Architect Alberto Perez-Gomez of Canada, Architect Patrick Delatour former Minister of Tourism of Haiti and Prof. Architect Ralph Mills-Tettey of Ghana serving as assessors in this JIA tradition. Projects submitted for competition by Full Members of the Jamaican Institute of Architects will be exhibited at the Courtleigh Corporate Center from Monday, May 26, through to Saturday, May 31. The exhibition will be opened daily for public viewing and features members’ works executed during the period 2008 -2013. A Special award, the People’s Choice Award, is selected by the public by way of balloting at the exhibition. The week’s activities also include Lectures and Symposia. The JIA invites all interested persons to visit the Exhibition and participate in the week’s activities.
