Library Amnesty Day Saturday December 22

We’ve survived the apocalypse - now it’s time to take care of your overdue fines and help out families in need this December on Library Amnesty Day. Receive a dollar reduction in your fines for every item you bring in to donate. All proceeds will go to the Brooks and District Food bank. (Please note: reductions will apply to fines, not lost or damaged items) 3


Children’s Programs Toddler Time

Wednesdays, December 5 to 19 10:15am to 10:45am Fridays, December 7 to 21 2:00pm to 2:30pm Toddler Time is our popular early literacy education program that incorporates stories and activities for preschool aged children. Parents and children ages three and under are welcome to drop in to this free children’s event.

Story Time

Wednesdays, December 5 to 19 2:00pm to 2:30pm Fridays, December 7 to 21 10:15am to 10:45am Story Time is our popular early literacy program that incorporates stories and activities for school age children. Kids age four to six are welcome to drop in to this free children’s event.

Sleepy Time Story Time Thursday Evenings 7:00pm to 7:30pm

Families and kids are welcome to join us for a free, relaxing evening before bed. Come for bed time stories, gentle activities, and quiet sing-along-songs. Feel free to dress in your pajamas and bring your favourite bedtime buddy along.

Children’s Programs Wii for Tweens

Thursdays After School 3:30pm to 4:45pm Calling all gamers! Come in and enjoy playing the coolest multi player games the Wii has to offer. Looking for more to do? We also have board games available to play with your friends. Wii Game Day is a free program for kids ages 7 to 12, and we supply snacks for all kid gamers.

Super Story Time: Winter Wonderland Saturday December 8 10:30am to 11:30am

Parents and kids ages six and under are invited to join us for a fun filled morning full of winter themed stories, games, crafts, and more. Sign up at the library today for this free event, spaces are limited.

Super Saturday: Christmas Workshop Saturday December 8 1:30pm to 3:30pm

Have a holly jolly Christmas here at the Brooks Public Library. Kids ages 7 to 12 are invited to come in for an afternoon of holiday stories, crafts, and treats. Space is limited, sign up at the library today or call for more information at 403-362-2947.

Teen Programs Teen Gaming

Tuesdays After School 3:30pm to 4:45pm Calling all teen gamers! Come into the library every Tuesday after school and play with our XBox, Kinect, board, and dice games. Teen Gaming is for teen ages 13 to 17, and we supply snacks and drinks for all gamers.

Videoconferences Wreath Making

Thursday December 6 1:00pm to 2:15pm Join instructor Kath Smyth and learn how to design and construct a beautiful outdoor wreath made of materials that you can find in your own backyard. Go through each step of construction of a wreath right down to decorating it with a bow. Presented by the RISE Videoconference Network.

Adult Programs Chinook Winds Christmas Concert Tuesday December 4 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Enjoy an evening of classical holiday music performed by local quartet Chinook Winds. Join our musical guests Jerry Friesen, Celina Everett, Dr. Struan Vaugn, and Janiee Jensen as they preform classic and popular Christmas songs. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

A Christmas Carol

Tuesday December 11 7:00pm to 8:00pm Experience the story of the miserly Ebenezor Scrooge as you’ve never seen it before. Join Michael Glynn MacDonald as he tells the story of Charles Dicksen’s classic tale ‘A Christmas Carol’ live in the library. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

Noon Hour Preppers

Monday December 17 to Friday December 21 12:10pm to 12:50pm The Mayan calendar predicts that the world will end this year on December 21 - are you prepared for disaster? If you’ve ever thought about actively planning and preparing you and your family to survive emergencies such as zombie apocalypse, alien invasion, or natural disasters, then this is the workshop for you. Spend your week with us learning the basics of preparing yourself for potential disasters. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend. 9


Movies @ the Library White Christmas (PG) Monday December 10 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Having left the Army following W.W.II, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays tty and Judy matchmaker and introduces Wallace to sisters Betty who also have a song-and-dance act. When the sisters travel to Vermont to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, as the lodge owner.

Saturday December 15 2:00pm to 4:00pm Buddy was a baby in an orphanage who stowed away in Santa’s sack and ended up at the North Pole. Later, as an adult human who happened to be raised by elves, Santa allows ws him to go to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs. Buddy, meanwhile, experiences the delights of New York City and human culture as only an elf can.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (PG13) Sunday December 16 1:30pm to 3:30pm (Chinese with Subtitles)

A story set in 19th century China and centered on the lifelong friendship between two girls who develop their own secret code as a way to contend with the rigid cultural norms imposed on women. Based on the best-selling novel by Lisa See. 10

The Mitten Tree

Help us decorate the Library’s Christmas tree.

Donate a pair of new or handmade winter mittens, scarves, or hats between Saturday December 1 & Monday December 31 and we’ll add them to our Christmas tree.

All items will be donated to families in need within our community. 11

Crates Culture Crates was conceived as a tribute to mark the anniversary of the opening of the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton on Jan. 29, 2010. Celebrating the architecture of new and newly renovated cultural institutions in the cities of Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Medicine Hat, this exhibition features archival photographs and related artworks from select public collections.
