Black Veil Brides: A History So Far By Isabel Hogendorn a.k.a. Ash Podsolnechnik
Introduction Whether it is because you’ve heard references to Black Veil Brides, know a fan of them, or are a fan yourself, you’ve obviously begun reading this for a reason. This essay is about Black Veil Brides (BVB) and my experiences researching them. I chose to write this essay about them because I love them. Black Veil Brides are beautiful, both physically, mentally, socially, and musically. I devote my life to following in their steps, doing what they would want me to do, following my dream of being a musician just like them, and above all, being a loyal fan. And part of that loyalty is to write this essay about them. Much of the information about Black Veil Brides I already knew, and yet, I have also learned a lot about them because of this research. This essay will cover pretty much every aspect of BVB, from their history, to their style, and finally, how people view them, whether they’re diehard fans or accusing haters. To allow you to better appreciate this essay, I would like to first show you the process I went through to be able to write this paper.
My Experiences Writing This Paper When I first began this paper, I thought it easy. I already knew everything I needed to know, so all I would have to do is find places that had the same information. Easy, right? No. The problem was, I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. In the end I did some actual research. And I’m glad I did, too. I found my first source on the second day of research, if you can even call it finding. I’ve had that magazine since December, but that was the first day I decided to use it for the project. Even though it is my first source, it is the third one I used. The second source is the one I used first, and I found it on the same day. Same goes for the third. I had tried to use source 4 on the first day, but it wouldn’t load, so I had to wait until day 3. Source 5 was found during makeup work time on day 4, when I was supposed to be writing this paragraph. Because I spent so much time in the first two days finding sources for things I already knew, on day 3, stretching into days 4, 5, and 6, I had to spend all of my time trying to find information for the
2
paper I was supposed to be writing. It was not helped by the fact that I was unable to get my research done on the first day because of slow computers. When I was attempting to access source 4 on day 1, it only loaded 2 out of 6 times. The first time it loaded for 1 second and then went to a blocking page saying it was blocked because it was a media/streaming website. The second time it actually loaded, it was to block it for “adult content.” All in all, day 1 was a complete waste of time. When I tried to work at home, I got a bit distracted by BVB internet memes, but I eventually did get some work done. The next few days went fairly smoothly, even though I was behind. I was quite afraid at some points during my research that I would have to change my topic or at least my guiding questions. I had to put up a bit of a fight to claim BVB as my topic. There was also a concern that I knew too much about them already. What most people don’t know is the sheer fame of BVB. The amount of articles and interviews with them is so immense, I’m considering creating a website of my own and devoting an entire tab to BVB articles, interviews, and, of course, this essay. It could go like: “Home, About, Games, BVB.” As for the concern on my knowledge, I, too, thought I knew everything about BVB, but as I have previously stated, I was far from being the Einstein of BVB. But with indirect help from loads of people, I was able to succeed at writing this even so.
Band Overview Black Veil Brides is an American glam/metalcore band currently based in Los Angeles, California. It was conceived in Delhi, Ohio, in 2006. Created by Andy Biersack, the lead singer, the band has gone through many member changes before finally settling on its current lineup. It just so happens that Andy is the only original member left in the band. The band has two guitarists, Jake Pitts and Jinxx. Jinxx also serves as the band’s violinist and pianist. Ashley Purdy, the bassist, is also BVB’s backup vocalist. Christian Coma became the band’s drummer in 2010, after their previous drummer, Sandra Alvarenga, quit earlier that year. Before we go on, let’s learn a bit about the current members in BVB, beginning with Andy Biersack, the man who started it all.
3
Current Members Andrew Dennis (Andy) Biersack was born on 26 December, 1990, in Ohio to his parents, Chris and Amy Biersack. When Andy was approximately 3, he found his dad’s old trading cards of KISS, Motley Crüe, and Aerosmith. This is how he originally began to take an interest in classic rock music. As a child, Andy would take materials such as action figures, paint, tin foil, Christmas lights, and cardboard boxes to create elaborate stages for homemade KISS figures to be placed on. The first record he ever bought was, unsurprisingly, KISS’ Revenge. When he was eight, he went to a KISS concert and at the end, the drummer pointed him out and said, “That kid’s awesome. He’s gonna be a rock star.” Little did he know how right he was. Andy was interested in the theater from a young age and has always loved performing. In the fourth grade, he entered the school talent show doing part of The Phantom of the Opera. He was very dramatic and had no idea that no one would understand what he was doing. Andy attended a Catholic elementary and middle school, and he loved God and Jesus and found the Bible stories fascinating. As a kid, he was very afraid of dark things. But when he discovered bands like A Fire Inside (AFI) and The Misfits, his view of dark things completely changed. He began to fall in love with the things he had so feared before. He also began to notice what he called “a level of cynicism and anger that made me start to question things.” And when he questioned things, he began to rebel. He’d spike his hair, wear edgy clothes and just generally not conform. Because he was different, Andy was very discriminated against, even by his teachers. His high school years were not much better, as he was bullied even at the special performing arts school he attended. Even so, he stuck with his dream of being a rock star. For one year he skipped high school to go do small acting projects in California. However, he still loved music, and did not want to get involuntarily sucked into the world of acting. So, he went back to Ohio. However, a change in directors prohibited Biersack from coming back to his art school. He began recording songs and posting them on Myspace, where he was met by an international fanbase. When he went back to school, he went to a public high
4
school in northern Kentucky. Due to his lack of familiarity with the curriculum and fights with discriminating students, he was placed in a “remedial” off-campus classroom. However, he was too smart for the “degrading” lessons there, so he dropped out to avoid further humiliation. When he was 15, he founded a band called Biersack, whose name eventually changed to Black Veil Brides. To promote the band, Andy took an idea from KISS: he printed the band’s name on shirts and handed them out at concerts. It didn’t matter what colour they were, he just printed on anything. This seemed to work surprisingly well. He says, “One thing I learned from sporting events is that people love free shirts.” The band never really fit into a scene, and one of their trademarks was that they took a strong stance against all the Christian bands and the Courage Crew, a clean-cut, almost militaristic band that also originated in the area. Biersack says, “I was 15, strongly opinionated, and probably didn’t understand the severity of the things I was saying on stage.” At this point the band was mainly Andy’s way of giving a feeling of belonging to all the “different” kids like himself. When he was 16 and 17 he was in a long-distance relationship with a girl in LA, and was constantly making short trips there. As his 17-year-old year neared its end, he decided to move to LA to further work on his band. He informed the rest of his band a year ahead of time that he would be making this move, and that they could come with him, but their lack of faith in him caused them to stay behind, and eventually they sued Andy for moving away and supposedly stealing all their ideas. Whilst in LA, BVB went through a series of member changes before finally settling on their current and most likely final lineup. Andy likes the colours red, green, and black. He also likes seagulls very much due to a conversation where he talked about how awesome it would be to have a concert where seagulls flew out of his armpits. It stuck and he now likes seagulls very much. He also likes kittens. He has loved Batman all his life, has a Batman tattoo, and sometimes dresses as Batman for fun, and can be seen wearing a Batman pin in the “Rebel Love Song” video. He also likes peanut butter very much, especially Skippy Super Chunk peanut butter, in fact, when I met BVB, he had been given a giant jar of it that was quite
5
literally bigger than his head. He has made a video about how much he likes this peanut butter that can be found on Youtube. Ashley Purdy was born on 28 January, 1984 and raised by his grandmother in Missouri listening to rock and country music. He sang in both the school and church choirs. Growing up, he had a series of instruments including drum sets and acoustic guitars, which he played until they fell apart. His first musical influence was Michael Jackson, though he later switched over to liking KISS. Ash had his first band in middle school and liked to make up names and logos for bands. His first serious band existed during his high school years, when he and his bandmates would do covers and even sometimes write their own original songs. Ash has loved art all his life and has been drawing, painting, and designing fashion ever since he was a child. He also knew that he wanted to be a rock star, and he knew that the music scene he was looking for was in Los Angeles. However, he didn’t seem to see the difference between LA and San Francisco, and, since he liked the ‘49ers, he chose to move to San Francisco. Whilst there, he enrolled in the Academy of Art in San Francisco. When Ash finally realized that he needed to be in LA, he transferred to Otis College of Art and Design and moved down there. He would eventually graduate with a BFA degree in Communication Design focusing on Fashion and Marketing. In the meantime, Purdy struggled to make enough money to live on. After many failed attempts to create a good band, he joined together with Andy and the other early members of BVB. Ash debuted his own line of clothing in March 2013, at Forgotten Saints on Melrose Avenue in LA. He says he wants fans to feel like they belong, so it’s important to him that the clothes are not too expensive. He also has a hand in designing some of the BVB merchandise, which BVB model themselves. He likes the colours red, black, and chrome. It looks like he has finally achieved his dream of being a rock star….
6
Jeremy “Jinxx” Ferguson is one of BVB’s guitarists, and also their violinist. As shown by his role in the band, he was very influenced by classical music, and in his learning of both guitar and violin has transformed the songs he knows on the violin into songs he can play on guitar. He, like other members of BVB, likes Metallica and Motley Crüe. The first record he ever bought was Metallica’s And Justice for All. He learned the guitar parts on the album from start to finish. Jinxx says, “In classical music, with string quartets, you have the two main violins carrying out the higher harmonies and the cello and viola as the rhythm section. The two violins are having the conversation with each other and it’s brilliant. Two guitars can work out dual leads and beautiful harmonies. A lot of times, in a two-guitar band, one player does all the leads and the other does all the rhythm, but I think it’s more interesting when they both play lead and have their conversation.” Jinxx got his nickname because he got into lots of incidents when on tour with a previous band. They said he was jinxed and the name stuck. He likes the colours orange and yellow. His previous bands include The Dreaming; he also took part in the “Team Cybergeist” project. When asked about the meaning of life, Jinxx said, “The meaning of life? To live it to the fullest ‘cause you don’t know what’s next, you know?.... You never know what’s gonna happen, so you need to get out there and do whatever it is you’ve ever dreamed of doing. You know, dream it, be it, do it….” Jake Pitts was born on 21 August, 1986 in Idaho and is currently one of BVB’s two guitarists. He joined the band in November 2009 because he was Jinxx’s friend and met Andy at a party. He always wanted to produce/write in a band and, with BVB, he got an opportunity to write and record. Jake was picked on in middle and high school. He was always the “weird kid.” People took advantage of him and made fun of him. However, he always knew he would be a rock star. He got a guitar at age 10 but put it away for 3 years. When he started to like Metallica, he took the guitar out again. Jake’s mother was a composer and classical pianist. She taught him music and harmony theory. She is his favorite classical composer. It was through Jake that classical influences entered BVB. Sadly, Jake’s mother died on 18 January, 2014. He wrote about her on Instagram: “To me she was my hero, my biggest
7
musical influence, but also a wonderful and caring mom…. I wear her name proudly on my chest. I love you, Mom.” He does, indeed have a tattoo of her name that now also includes a picture and beautiful coloured framing. Jake was also influenced by metal and likes interesting solos that tell a story. However, he has ceased listening to bands other than his own, to avoid stealing other bands’ ideas. Jake is a skateboarder and likes skater movies with metal and punk music in them. He also loves to do visual arts and thinks album art is very important. Also, he likes the colours black and bright green. The Legion of the Black (BVB’s fanbase), formerly called the BVB Army, has supported him very much after his mother’s death, and for that he is very grateful. He believes that his mother still watches over him and supports everything he does. I, too, believe this…. Christian “CC” Coma Christian Coma was born on 21 April, 1985 in LA. He is currently the drummer for BVB. He is the most recent member, joining the band after Sandra Alvarenga, the former drummer, decided she wanted to take her career in a different direction and left BVB. Despite the circumstances, the fanbase had a surprisingly positive reaction to CC’s joining the band. He has played drums ever since he was 9, and is exceedingly good at playing. He is definitely the class clown in the band, and has a self deprecating sense of humour, that can sometimes conceal his kind heart. You can see this on display on his Twitter handle, @ccbvb. Also, his favourite colour is green. Few other reliable sources contain information on him, so I will have to leave it at that, but hope to learn more in the future.
Discography BVB first gained attention from record labels in 2007 with 2 EPs: Sex and Hollywood and Never Give In. BVB recorded its first full album, We Stitch These Wounds, in 2010, featuring all of the current members except its drummer, who at the time was Sandra Alvarenga. She left the band in 2010 and was replaced by Christian Coma. 8
In 2011, the current lineup of the band released its second album, Set the World on Fire, and another EP, Rebels. Most recently, in 2013, BVB released a third album, Wretched and Divine: Story of the Wild Ones, and a full-length film, Legion of the Black. A new album is currently in production, however, details on the name and release date have yet to be released.
Style The style of BVB’s music and appearance has changed quite a bit during their existence. During their first album, We Stitch These Wounds, Black Veil Brides had a very dark, gothic look that was strongly influenced by the glam metal of the 80’s and by the emo subculture. The music on this album is very much of an emo style, though many elements of metal also are shown here. It is officially categorised as post-hardcore or screamo. Their second album, Set the World on Fire, was made up mainly of metal or melodic metalcore. They also take influences from classic rock and metal. Their appearance in this album was entirely a more modern and less… hairy version of the hair and glam metal of the 1980’s. Also, since their music is aimed less at boys and more at people of both genders, the style was a more attractive and toned-down kind of thing that focused mainly on the colour black. The makeup was also a more dignified version of KISS’ makeup. Their third and most recent album is called Wretched and Divine and is what some critics and writers call a “punk-rock opera.” It has a more defined classical influence than the other albums do. It is also very melodic, which is a characteristic that has not changed throughout BVB’s albums. Its sound is harder than that of We Stitch These Wounds, but softer than that of Set the World on Fire. Although all the albums have what Pandora radio calls “subtle vocal harmony,” it is most pronounced in this album. This is also the first album where BVB does not use full-body warpaint, and their facial makeup is also toned
9
down. However, it is still a very glam style, even though they have made their accessorising more of a subtlety. BVB is currently in production on a fourth album that they believe may be the height of their career, their best album ever. No one knows what physical and musical style they will sport in this new album. We will just have to wait and see….
Milestones Since its creation in 2006, BVB has passed many major milestones. The band put out two EPs to gain attention of record labels. One of their most successful songs from these EPs, “Knives and Pens,” which was also part of the 2010 album, We Stitch These Wounds, had a self-produced music video that as of 2011 had 27 million Youtube views and as of 27 April 2014 has approximately 57.29 million views. The band was signed to StandBy records to create this album, which reached #36 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. BVB’s second album, Set the World on Fire, reached #17 on this chart. It was the first album from the band’s time at Lava Records. The change in record label was caused by the chief music officer at Hot Topic, John Kirkpatrick, who informed the president of Lava Records, Jason Flom, that a Black Veil Brides t-shirt was the second-best selling shirt in the entire country of America. Black Veil Brides have countless awards including 3 consecutive Revolver Golden Gods awards, the Loudwire Most Dedicated Fans award and all of their Loudwire Cage Matches. They played in Vans Warped Tour 2011 and 2013. Their third album, Wretched and Divine, reached the top of the iTunes Top Albums chart and sold 47,000 copies in the first week alone. In addition, their songs have been featured in the movies Transformers: Dark of the Moon and The Avengers. Their fanbase is also said to be the most devoted of any band of that type.
10
Reception It seems that almost everyone who knows Black Veil Brides has a very strong opinion on them. Either you love them and are part of their fanbase, you hate them and are one of their strongly opposed haters, or you have never heard of them in your entire life. It would seem that this is normal, as every band has fans and haters. But for some reason, BVB, not unlike Justin Bieber and others like him, create abnormally strong opinions. And so, we must begin with their infinitely loyal fanbase. As you may have guessed, I am part of this “infinitely loyal fanbase.” All who I tell of this seem to think that I am the only one in the world who would ever like such a band, however this is far from true. Their official Twitter handle has approximately 483,800 followers. The fanbase of Black Veil Brides was originally called the BVB Army, a name modeled after KISS’s “KISS Army.” BVB’s fanbase was recently renamed the “Legion of the Black” (LOTB) after their concept album Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones and the corresponding movie. LOTB is not just in America, in fact, non-Englishspeaking countries have BVB fans, too. I have found fansites based in the Ukraine and in the Czech Republic, and there are pictures of BVB touring in Japan right during the famous earthquake. LOTB has been found many times to be the most loyal fanbase of all bands. For each hateful comment toward BVB, you will find several in protest to these haters. BVB fans are known to say that they would do anything for Black Veil Brides, and being one myself, I can tell you that we indeed would do anything for them. Like many boy bands’ fanbases, a majority of the LOTB is made up of teenage girls, most of whom believe that they will eventually marry one or more of the band members. I can tell you that this belief is not easily shaken, except by an even stronger obsession, which, for most LOTB members, is not easily gained, as most of their time and money will be used by being part of the LOTB. Since BVB has so much merchandise, and their fanbase is so large, a large portion of their income comes from the purchases made by fans. This is why, not only do the members of the LOTB believe that they are important, they actually do play quite a large role in the success of BVB.
11
However, there has never been a band who everyone in the universe loves, and so it is with Black Veil Brides. The haters of BVB have no real name or congregation, but they do play quite an important role in the lives of the members of BVB and LOTB. The haters of BVB seem to be relentless in their negativity, and not timid about it either. On every BVB video or interview you will see comments that glorify them and those that say awful things about them. I have heard many discriminations against them, including devil-worshipping, brainwashing, and sex-slavery. None of these are true. There is a website called christwire.com that has entire articles describing the supposed evil-doings of Black Veil Brides, and this is not the only website of its kind. It claims that Black Veil Brides are blasphemous Satanworshippers and provide support through their lyrics. Lyrics that may support this cause include, “When darkness is all you see, this is our Sweet Blasphemy,” “We scream, we shout, we are the Fallen Angels,” “A church of lies can’t tell me what is right,” “That god does not exist, I cannot deny,” and “The church of F.E.A.R., the church of failure, the church of fools.” However, all of these have a very logical explanation. Black Veil Brides is an atheist band. The reason for this is that Andy Biersack had bad experiences with Christianity when he was a child, however it had a big impact on him, and that is shown through the lyrics of the band’s music. Also, all of these lyrics are designed to encourage all the people who are discriminated against or bullied, and those who do not have the same religion as other people around them. Black Veil Brides do not feel they are perfect (though many of their fans do), but they do not feel that they are evil either, so they frequently reference an inability to fit in in heaven or hell. “We’re bored to death in heaven, and all alone in hell. We only want to be ourselves,” and “The gates of heaven were locked shut. The pits of hell they were all filled up and I fear I don’t belong here,” are just a few examples of this. Many people also call them religion-hating for their name, when in fact it is a reference to the nuns who “marry” god and while doing so are clad in a black veil. Many haters criticise BVB for their appearance alone, and it is not difficult to see why. After all, who would trust 5 men clad in black and leather, with shocking, KISS-like makeup and wild black hair? And many of their fans are the pale, skinny teenagers with long, sideswept, layered hair in shocking colours ranging from neon to black, and dark, almost vampiric makeup that have been dubbed “emo,” so 12
they must be evil, right? Nyet. This is purely an image. The style of music BVB plays happens to attract people of this type, and can therefore be associated with this style of clothing and makeup, but neither the members of the band, nor their music, nor their style, nor the style of their fans is evil. It is merely not a part of mainstream culture. The members of BVB are very nice people, as can be seen on any of their Twitter pages. In fact, I have personally met them and they truly are very nice people. They get along wonderfully with each other, and are very appreciative of their fans. Also, some of their songs have lifted people up from the dark and made them find hope where they thought there was none. For many people who were very depressed, BVB gave them a reason to live. If great music to listen to when you are feeling sad is all you have, sometimes that’s enough to make your life worth living.
Conclusion It looks like we’ve reached the end of this project. I must say, that went really slowly. Before I go, I have to say that I have learned a lot about researching through this project. I am not just saying that because we have to talk about “how we’ve grown as researchers” in the conclusion. I really do believe that I have learned a lot about research. When I began this paper, I had a lot of trouble finding sources and doing research and such, especially because I knew that I would have a lot of time to do it, but in the end, I did not. The sentence you are reading right now was written at 10:31 on 29 April, 2014, the night before I had to present my board to the class. Let the point be made that I had not started physical work on my board until today, and concept design began yesterday. This just goes to show how extremely far behind I got. I am not exactly sure how this happened, though I am now confident that I will be finished in time. However, it is now 10:35, and it seems as though I have only written 4 sentences in 4 minutes. This is because it seems that I have become so incredibly far behind that I no longer have the time to write my paper by hand and then type it. So what have I learned from this? I learned to pay attention to my research and to not just look at
13
memes all day. I’ve also learned that I do not need to take notes on every single piece of information that is remotely relevant in any way; I only really need to know the things that are important to the paper. I do not however, have a clear explanation of how exactly I have grown as a researcher, so it may not make much sense. But, the total amount of research I’ve done in my life has increased substantially, and practice makes perfect, da? Speaking of Russian, or rather in Russian, as the case may be, one thing I learned is that the time I am supposed to be using working on my English homework is not a good time to practice my Russian. That is better suited to the time meant for Spanish homework…. and schoolwork…. and tests. (Not to suggest that I work on Russian when I’m supposed to be doing Spanish or anything.) Also, I am quite proud of myself right now, as I was getting a bit worried that I would not be able to talk about Russia in this whole paper, but I have finally found a way to. Yay! But that has nothing to do with research, unless of course you are researching Russia, in which case it does, but the point is that I have gotten off topic. I know I should probably delete all that, but I’m so proud of it that I just can’t. In any case, I have nothing more to say on the topic of research, so it’s time to get on to the acknowledgments, which I only know how to spell because the word is right on the bottom of the screen. I hope you like them, even though acknowledgments are boring. I think this might not be as boring as most acknowledgments…. I’ll stop talking now.
Acknowledgments I would like to thank Ms. Thibadeau for introducing the iSearch project to me, and for allowing me to research BVB, and in doing so, helping me prove my loyalty. I also want to thank my parents for pushing me to do my research even when I was not feeling motivated, and for helping me on the way to achieving my dream of being a BVB fan and musician similar to and influenced by them. My parents bought me a guitar and even signed me up for professional lessons. My mom took me to a BVB concert and even paid the extra money so I could meet them. She is also going to take me to Vans Warped Tour this summer. I 14
am very thankful to both my parents for letting me express myself in the way that I dress, for letting me listen to music that I love while still protecting me from things that could put me in danger, for giving me privileges that most kids my age are either not able or not allowed to do, and above all, for believing in me and always being there for me when I need them. I want to thank all my friends for always being there even when we disagree. I would especially like to thank Jason for pulling me out of La-La Land and getting me to focus on this paper in class. I would also like to thank my uncle, Nick, for lending me his guitar so that I can practice at my daddy’s house. I also want to thank my uncle Andrew for letting me keep his miniature keyboard that my little brother now uses to practice piano when he comes down to my daddy’s house (my family is complicated). I want to thank Victoria from my summer camp for giving me my first piece of BVB merch, a red rubber bracelet. I want to thank the people at Hot Topic, Amazon.com, Alternative Press, Kerrang!, and all the record labels BVB has ever had for giving me the music, merch, and information on my favorite band. I want to also thank all the people who have posted label quizzes and BVB quizzes online and all the people who posted BVB videos on YouTube for helping me discover the band that would soon change my life. I want to thank all the ancestors of me and the members of BVB and everyone who I thanked for eventually causing the existence of us all. And last, but not least, I would like to thank Black Veil Brides. Without them, I’d probably be a completely different person. Lots of people would. I’m glad that BVB met each other and became who they are today. Andy has never given up and has such a wonderful personality, not to mention the fact that he’s immensely beautiful. Ashley Purdy is more similar to me than I originally thought, and, coincidentally because of his name, is very “purdy.” Jinxx grew up with classical music and uses his violin to bring a unique style to the band. Jake Pitts has gone through a great tragedy in his life and is even so a wonderful guitarist who brings a lot in to BVB. And CC is an awesome drummer and is like the class clown of BVB, and a very important part of it indeed. So thank you very much to all the people who helped me write this paper, and all who have supported me or Black Veil Brides. I am very grateful for all of your help and support. And to all who feel 15
as though no one loves them, or that all is lost, know that you are loved, and you do have the strength to change your situation. I believe in you, and so does BVB. Legion of the Black forever‌.
