BULLFIGHTING BROTHERHOOD The trumpets announce the arrival of the bull. Three thousand people hush in anticipation. The cavaleiros communicate with the bandarilheiros through their eyes and Portuguese shouts as a way to confront a half ton bull. Hemingway said the more confident a bull is the less he bluffs. The display of courage, confidence, and heritage has drawn me to the bullfighters and bulls as a way to understand the fabric that holds a community together.
From 1941-1981 nearly 40,000 people from the bullfight-loving island of Terceira in the Portuguese Azores migrated to the Central Valley. Today there are more people of Azorean descent in California’s San Joaquin valley than there are on the islands. Through multiple generations many of the original customs have not only survived but thrived. The festa, or celebration culminating in the bullfight, have been held in the Azores for centuries are held here as if a day hasn’t passed.

BIOGRAPHY Álvaro Martino was born in Coimbra in 1984, where he majored in graphic design. Since 2007, lives in Porto, having worked as a designer until 2013. The first contact with photography was in 1999, where in addition to his profession as a designer deepened the passion and dedication for photography. In 2013 he won the 1st place and an honorable mention in the contest Arrábida 50. From 2013 takes photography as main occupation, with the personal goal to unify the design and photography. As an emerging photographer has collaborated with several companies related to culture, design and private institutions. In this context, photojournalism and documentary photography force him to explore and to share the vision by different means. His work focuses mainly on the capture of natural light and focuses particularly in everyday situations, looking for them expressions, characters, details of your eyes. As a Graphic Designer I was fortunate to have spent 6 years at Atelier Martino & jaña. I learned strong bases with special attention and dedication to typography, editorial creativity, and above all the appreciation in the transformation of a simple work in to a excellence and innovation project. I’m also a Co-Founder and photographer of We Came From Space. WCFS is a transmitting knowledge platform, living from an almost complete overlap between this universe, and aspiring to extract the most from the nature of this reality.

BIOGRAPHY Hi! I’m Teresa Vick. Graphic Designer since 2005 and natural light photographer with a documentary style located in Vancouver, WA. I love creating. I love finding beauty in the mundane and seemingly trivial. I love being a part of creating beautiful things. I tend to be an over-sharer. So here goes. Music, movies, and imagery are God’s gifts to me. I’m convinced these are the tools He chooses to communicate with me. I make mistakes everyday, try to clean up the mess alone, make it worse, then finally, as a last resort call on the One I should have in the first place. I’m desperately searching to fill the hole that only He can fill and everyday I become more convinced that it won’t be filled here... and I can’t wait to meet Him face to face. To finally meet who I was created for. To finally understand.

BIOGRAPHY Carlos Lopes Franco, was born in Barras - Mafra in 1953. It is a self-taught photographer who focuses his vision and expression in people and their ways of living. The “art” learned on the street in insistent research on the richness and diversity of everyday life in photographic experimentation and observation of works of classic photographers. The accuracy of the construction of his photograph has certainly a lot to do with his engineering training and his researcher career path. But the affection and rationality that determine his course. In the images, which will share with us, we read one razor-sharp observation, the accuracy and the dynamics of the composition, the fictional creation and the use of time in a deep bond of belonging and symbiosis with the everyday. Carlos Lopes Franco works entirely with photos in black and white. In each image transpires respect for characters in their work and their determination to create broader meanings from stolen the real moments that happens to them. His photographs bear witness to the fundamental dignity of humanity and while fantasize with humor or question, underline with a deep tenderness that same dignity. In the act of shooting, considers that “a photograph should suggest a story or merely convey a feeling, so that each may have a sense or own interpretation when placed before a photograph”. In his two books, Carlos Lopes Franco is confirmed as a magnificent storyteller and one of the most outstanding contemporary Portuguese photographers. by José Pessoa
