LIFE INSIDE THE BORDERS

09

War is war. It has always many faces and many victims. It was year 1999. March. The NATO bombing of former Yugoslavia has began. (Date: March 24. 1999 - June 10. 1999) It was and also is today an issue about province Kosovo and Metohija. An issue between Serbs and Albanians that began in 1878. when the League of Prizren was founded and the idea of “Great Albania” was officially born. My first destination was Velika Hoca, isolated Serbian village near Prizren, on south-west Kosovo, called “enclave”. In Velika Hoca today live 700 Serbs. They are mostly living from money they get from Serbian government like some kind of minimal help. The rest for surviving they produce in their gardens. Sometimes go out to the Serbian part of town Kosovska Mitrovica, on the north of Kosovo, for supplies. Velika Hoca is also famous for its vineyards. War destroys, but not everything. If people have enough courage to stay humans, not to forget, but to forgive and to be together, to support each other, there will not be any force that could destroy them. War is strong. But life is stronger. Date: July 2013 Location: Velika Hoca, Kosovo, Serbia

Leposava walks slowly, she is old, tired and her heart is hurt. In February 1999. Her both sons were kidnapped by LAK (Liberation Army of Kosovo). One son Dobrivoj didn’t survived the torturing and died next day. The other son Novica stayed alive. Every Saturday, through 14 years, Leposava was visiting her dead son Dobrivoj at the Cemetery.

11

12

“What to do, brother, war is war. You are not guilty, it just happened,” said one from the LAK after torturing him. He was kind and gave him food, water and pill against the pain. Novica was covered in blood, bloated and couldn’t move because of injuries. 14 years after he was kidnapped with his brother Novica still remembers all details and all the pain. His brother died on his arms, said he with closed eyes. Novica’s greatest happiness is his family - wife, three sons and daughter. (On the wall is picture of popular Kosovo Maiden giving water to the Serbian warrior after battle of Kosovo in 1389. That picture is symbol of Serbian history on Kosovo.)

14

“Son like him mother does not born anymore”, said Zivana staring at the emptiness. When Nebojsa was killed in December 1999, she was broken. After 13 years, her other son married an Albanian girl. Their son was born and he got the name after his dead uncle - Nebojsa. Zivana’s only real joy nowadays is his grandson. In him Nebojsa still lives.

15

Nebojsa Pavlovic was killed when he was in the nearby forest, going for woods. When his mother saw him for the last time, his body was full of bullets. The locals say that today is also quiet dangerous to walk out the village. Specially alone.

16

17

In that time there was a territorial defense on Kosovo, meaning that every house had its’ own weapon supply. People were alone in the fight for their home, families and lives.

18

Family Kostic was very large family living in village Retimlje near Velika Hoca. In 1998. There was a violent eviction organized by UCK. Many Serbs are kidnapped and many killed. Dragi and his daughter Zlata stayed alive and today live in Velika Hoca. His two sons were kidnapped, but he still believes they are somewhere alive. Dragi is very angry at life and his country because they have closed their eyes and don’t give any help or support.

19

20

“Hi! I am fine. I didn’t have any trouble till now. Condition for my liberation is to surrender all weapons we have at home.” When Dragi’s son Jugoslav was kidnapped in 1998, he was forced to send a letter to his family. They have never released him.

21

People in this village live quietly, modestly. They are grateful because they are alive. All they produce in their gardens is what they have for living.

22

Living in Velika Hoca is like living in the well. You can see the sky, you can breathe, but something is still choking you. All your problems hidden from the world.

23

24

Many Serbian families moved to north Serbia and many houses are empty. There are some pressures on local Serbs to sell their houses to Albanians.

25

Many young Serbs would like to abandon their homes on Kosovo in search for better and safer life. They see no perspective and no future here. But in spite of that, they know - this is home. And home must be preserved.

26

In a period before and after war in 1999. 19 Serbs from this area were killed, 66 kidnapped, around 3,740 Serbs moved to Serbia and 260 to Montenegro. There were 249 Serbian houses burned, 155 Serbian houses occupied, 6 Orthodox churches and monastery mined and destroyed.

Photography is, to me, the fun I spend too many hours. Actually I am a painter who can not draw and the camera is in an excellent replacement brushes. I am extremely interested in composition but still more light and as her model. I have no preference in the type of work (cityscape, portrait, B&W or Color). My path runs from the countryside to urban story and hence a “fantastic realism. I do not have official studies in this field and learn almost everything through hard work at the computer. Self always my influences range from obscurantism to school Impressionists and the black cinema. I have been published in several magazines and have won several awards. My current activities are centered mainly on finding a way to increasingly refined and consistent with what I express expression.
