SMITH & WESSON IS BRINGING METAL BACK

to the individual, so we made sure to remain compatible with many

opportunity to bring a high-performing metal handgun to the space. We wanted to offer a handgun that enhances performance right out of the box.

Smith & Wesson has such a robust history with metal handguns, and we thought it was only fitting to bridge the advancements of our M&P line with that history. We first introduced the M&P9 M2.0 Metal, which is a great foundational piece, but quickly followed up with the Performance Center version that really highlights performance-based features. It starts with the trigger, and on the new Competitor we’ve redesigned the sear to reduce the amount of takeup, give a much cleaner break, and a more pronounced reset. The flat design is meant to deter left or right influence when pulling to the rear, helping the shooter be more accurate downrange.

Ergonomic improvements have been made to the Performance Center Competitor with the addition of an oversized magazine release button and a flared magazine well. Introducing those oversized features gives the shooter more confidence in performing finer actions during the reloading phase and hopefully gets them back on target sooner.

The slide features our C.O.R.E.™ plate system that accepts a wide variety of aftermarket red dots that are available on the market today. Aesthetically, we took some liberties and removed mass from the slide. By leveraging the lightening cuts, we have less mass reciprocating to the rear, which means better recoil impulse control. When we worked with our professional shooters and others in the space, we asked about sights. We elected to go with a blacked-out rear sight and a green fiberoptic front sight, but understood that this is something that is unique

The aluminum frame on the Competitor gives it a wider range of versatility. The rigidity of the frame aids in less flex and torque, offering more accuracy and consistency. Being only a couple of ounces heavier than a polymer M&P, the Competitor can be used for longer sessions on the range or dry-fire practice without the fatigue that a heavier pistol would create.

Overall, this package is a great option for someone looking for an out-of-the-box solution to start really building their proficiency with a handgun. For those who need a little more, there is a robust ecosystem of options to fine-tune the Competitor to your specific needs. Make sure to stop by Smith & Wesson’s booth to check it out.

4 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS DAILY ❚ DAY 1, JANUARY 17, 2023 COVER SPONSOR THIS ISSUE’S COVER BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

Welcome to SHOT Show 2023

It’s my pleasure to welcome you to Las Vegas and the 45th SHOT Show. On behalf of NSSF—The Firearm Industry Trade Association and founder and owner of the SHOT Show—I want to say thank you for being here and for contributing to the show’s success.

This is my 24th SHOT Show. I attended my first 20 shows as an exhibiting company representative, and for the last four years, I’ve been here in the service of NSSF and your industry. So, I’ve seen the SHOT Show from different vantage points, and there’s one thing that I understand better now than I ever did before, something that I’d like every attendee to know:

Your participation at the SHOT Show directly supports all that NSSF does as your industry’s trade association. We advocate on behalf of the industry in Washington, D.C., and in state capitals nationwide; we provide compliance education and industry research; we promote firearm safety programs; we encourage participation in target shooting and hunting, and much more. NSSF’s many initiatives are fueled by you—our members, exhibitors, and attendees.

Speaking of membership, I encourage you to become a member of NSSF; if you’re one already, I thank you for supporting NSSF. Truly, there is strength in numbers, and I’m proud to say our membership ranks are growing. Members enjoy many benefits from NSSF, and they add another shoulder to our efforts to protect our industry. While you’re at SHOT, visit the NSSF booth in the lobby to learn more about membership and all that it offers.

For the second year, the combined venue of The Venetian Expo and Caesars Forum will be our home. We’ve made some adjustments, including helping you more easily navigate between the two venues, and you’ll see other enhancements, particularly at Caesars Forum, that I know you’ll appreciate.

New, exciting additions to the 2023 show are the SHOT After Dark events, which will include a sponsored live-music performance featuring some of the most notable names in rock and country music.

When it’s time for business, you’ll find the largest SHOT Show ever waiting for you. More than 2,400 companies are exhibiting in our two main venues, including, I’m happy to say, many companies formerly on the exhibitor waiting list. SHOT Show has historically provided a launching pad for these small companies, sending many of them into an orbit of business success.

SHOT Show is designed to meet the needs of nearly every segment of industry—manufacturers, wholesalers, firearm retailers, shooting range operators, suppliers, media, and associated groups involved with hunting, shooting, conservation, and firearm safety. Law enforcement and armed forces representatives are here as well. Only at SHOT Show will buyers see the largest collection of new products coming to market, access exclusive distributor deals, talk directly with manufacturers, learn about the latest compliance and regulatory issues, and absorb strategies for success in today’s changing business environment.

We know that Americans from all backgrounds are exercising their Second Amendment rights, as sales of firearms and ammunition continue at historic high levels. The growth of Black, Hispanic, and Asian owners demonstrates the appeal of firearms to all Americans, whether for sporting purposes, hunting, or security. The products all of us buy often begin their journey in the marketplace at the SHOT Show.

I think of SHOT Show as an exclamation point for this great industry. The show is about business, of course, but it’s also a celebration of our industry and our freedoms. I personally also look forward to renewing the friendships I’ve developed over the years. I know many of you feel the same way.

I know we’re all looking ahead to another successful year. At NSSF, our success, as well as our ability to serve our industry, depends on you because we couldn’t do all that we do without your participation at SHOT.

Have a great show!

KIDS & CLAYS RAISES RECORD AMOUNT FOR CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES

What started with a single sporting clay event 25 years ago to help critically ill children and their families has grown into a leading national organization benefiting hundreds of thousands of families each year. In 2022, another milestone was reached as a net $3.2 million was raised from 40 events.

The Kids & Clays Foundation supports a national series of clay shooting events and one fishing tournament, the proceeds of which benefit participating Ronald McDonald House Charities Chapters (RMHC). Ronald McDonald Houses provide housing and other help to critically ill children and their families across the country.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has been a key sponsor and advocate of the Kids & Clays Foundation for nearly 25 years.

Every dollar donated to Kids & Clays, whether it be cash or product, makes a great difference in the lives of many.”

Founded in 1999 by McDonald owner-operators Glenn and Kathy Lubeznik from Michigan City, Indiana, the first Kids & Clays Foundation/RMHC event raised $15,800 for the RMHC of Chicagoland and northwest Indiana Chapter. In 2022, the Kids & Clays Foundation series of events has grown to 40 in 23 states and has raised more than $27 million net to date to help critically ill children and their families.

“The success of Kids & Clays and its subsequent support of Ronald McDonald Houses is made possible by the incredible help of dozens of key companies and individuals within our outdoor community,” says Todd Kemmerer, president of Kids & Clays. “Our events are proof about how shooting enthusiasts are making a large difference in the lives of families from coast to coast. We can’t thank the outdoor community enough.”

A FAMILY TRADITION

Stability, strength, service, and scale are the principles that for more than 180 years have driven Sports South through five generations of Dickson family leadership with one sole focus—distribution. In 1841, two Welsh immigrants opened an apothecary shop in the rural township of Shreveport. In its earliest days, the business supplied firearms and ammunition to pioneering farmers, soldiers, and lawmen. Early ads from the 1800s document the fledgling company selling muzzleloaders, shotguns, and pistols, along with everything else the pioneer was likely to need to survive in a frontier town: quinine to fight malaria, mustard to make plasters, and ammunition to fight varmints, scoundrels, and scallywags.

Today the family tradition continues with two distribution companies; Sports South, LLC, which represents the sporting goods industry, and Morris & Dickson Co., LLC, which represents the pharmaceutical industry. Every day, Sports South meets the challenges set forth by its founding fathers by providing the right product to the right place at the right time.

As the country’s oldest and largest distributor of firearms, ammunition, and accessories, Sports South maintains its leadership position through the relentless pursuit of new ideas and new thinking to drive long-term success and growth. With the nation’s largest concentration of shooting sports inventory from all the leading manufacturers under one roof, Sports South can deliver unmatched distribution services to its customers.

Sports South is a family company, and these values permeate its culture to all its employees and its customers. Hard work, education, and hands-on involvement, along with the assured well-being and livelihood of hundreds of employees, reinforce the company's dedication to its origin.

Answering the Call

Competition clay target shooters are picky about the ammo they use. They know off-brand shells produce inconsistent patterns, and an inconsistent pattern can result in a missed target, one that may spell the difference between being atop the leader board at the end of the day or ruing that missed high overhead.

Two years ago, Federal released a premium shell, called High Over All (HOA), designed for this level of competition.

“We designed this load with a several goals in mind—high reloadability, consistent patterns, soft shooting, and premium performance,” says Dan Compton, Federal’s shotshell product line director. “We started with a one-piece tapered hull design. Onepiece hulls are very strong and typically you get more reloads out of them.”

Federal Premium target hulls have traditionally been onepiece, but had a straight-wall internal geometry as well. By shifting to a tapered design, Federal is giving reloaders a greater variety of wads with which to customize their load of choice.

A new hull geometry required a new wad design for High Over All. “The one-piece Podium wad provides uniform compression to protect the shot and produce the most consistent pattern. Shooters have really enjoyed how light the loads feel,” Compton says.

When designing Federal Premium High Over All, the company’s engineers knew the wad would be a critical component. So, they gave the Podium wad an exclusive crush-zone design that

cushions the payload for less deformation. It also equalizes pressures for better pattern efficiency and reduces felt recoil for more comfortable shooting.

That high-antimony lead shot also plays a vital part in HOA’s downrange performance. “At ignition, shotshell pellets are subjected to incredible forces that can deform them and degrade patterns,” says Compton. “To combat this, the lead we used in HOA’s pellets is blended with antimony, a metal long known for its hardness. The process makes the shot hard enough to resist deformation.”

In addition, the High Over All hulls feature a solid brass head. “Solid brass can help with extraction in tighter chambers and makes resizing easier on a reloading bench,” says Compton So, if this product is so good, why haven’t you heard about it or stocked it?

Blame COVID. Federal introduced High Over All in 2021, right in the middle of the supply-chain disruptions caused by the global pandemic. They weren’t the only manufacturer to delay new products. Many others were working around the clock to fulfill existing orders that were backordered due to incredible consumer demand.

But now you will see a renewed push by Federal to get HOA into the hands of retailers and the shooters who need it most. “In 2023, dealers will be happy to know that we are laser-focused on adding a robust variety of 20- and 28-gauge loads, plus .410 bore, to the already fat lineup of 12-gauge loads,” Compton says. “This way, dealers will have more to sell to their customers. Shooters who love and appreciate the performance of HOA can now get it for their sub-gauges as well. Technical specifics of those sub-gauge additions will be optimized to the most popular loads that competition shooters require.”

Increasing Industry’s Involvement in Suicide Prevention

Last summer in Denver, NSSF—The Firearm Industry Trade Association—and the Department of Veterans Affairs conducted a roundtable to explore expanding the industry’s efforts to reach firearm owners with education about mental health, preventing suicide, and deterring access to methods of selfharm. Representatives from influential manufacturers such as Smith & Wesson, Glock, Magpul, and Ruger contributed significantly to the discussion. Given the passion shown by attendees for taking increased action to deliver messaging on preventing suicide, it was decided to make the roundtable an annual event, with more industry companies involved the next time around.

Leading the session were Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO, and Dr. Matthew Miller, VA National Director of Suicide Prevention. In his opening remarks, Bartozzi said, “The messenger matters; our industry can help bridge the gap between the suicide prevention community and gun owners to support secure storage while protecting the right to bear arms.”

Miller reminded the audience that prevention and respect for firearm ownership can go together. “Suicide is preventable and not inevitable,” he said.

“Veterans believe that firearms are important to them for readiness and safety. We need to respect readiness and personal rights while at the same time increasing time and space in a suicidal crisis.”

Fifty percent of all suicides involve a firearm—a number that reaches 70 percent for veterans. The final decision to attempt suicide often occurs within minutes, which is why putting “time and space” between a person with suicidal thoughts and lethal means, whether it’s a firearm or not, can save a life.

Storing firearms securely or temporarily removing them to offsite storage when a person is in crisis are steps gun owners and their families can take to help prevent a tragedy. Also, reaching out to someone you’re concerned about and asking directly about suicide and encouraging that person to seek help is the right thing to do. “Talking about suicidal thoughts and showing concern will not put someone at greater risk,” states the AFSP-NSSF Firearms and Suicide prevention brochure.

Companies large and small can help deliver these important messages to their customers. To make it easy for them to do, an initiative strongly advocated for in a roundtable breakout session was the formation of a hub website to make sample messaging and information on suicide prevention programs available. The hub website project is underway.

Many statistics are cited when discussing suicide, but one that captures the emotional toll is that 56 percent of Americans have been affected by suicide. When NSSF, VA, and AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) rolled out their suicide prevention toolkits for firearm retailers, shooting ranges, and communities, feedback revealed many in the firearm-owning community had experienced tragic loss from suicide (not only by firearm).

Bartozzi, Miller, and others, including Mike Sodini of Walk the Talk America, have each personally been touched by suicide. Their personal loss fuels their motivation to build cooperative efforts with industry companies and groups like the U.S. Concealed Carry Association, Armed Women of America, and others. Goals include removing the stigma of talking about mental health and suicide, stressing secure storage, and reminding people we all have mental health just as we have physical health, and both need to be cared for.

Industry can do more, is what they are saying, and the NSSF-VA Roundtable was a big first step in that direction.

An article about the roundtable in the Guns & Ammo 2023 Annual summed it up this way, “These

champions can do what public health officials could not: Use their unassailable pro-firearm credentials and speak from personal experience of loss to ensure these messages break through. With the firearms community on board, we can better work to turn the tide.”

If you or anyone you know is in crisis, dial 988 for support. For the Veterans Crisis Line, dial 988 and press 1.

RESOURCES AT SHOT SHOW

Many groups providing resources about mental health, suicide prevention, and secure firearm storage are at SHOT Show, including NSSF, VA, AFSP, Walk the Talk America, Hold My Guns, and NSSF’s Project ChildSafe. NSSF encourages you to use the QR code found on signs around SHOT Show to locate resources and the booths of these organizations.

Media wanting to cover the industry’s initiatives on suicide prevention, and companies interested in attending the next summer’s VA-NSSF Roundtable, should reach out to NSSF’s Bill Brassard.

PERFECT SOLUTION

Inventory control is a key component of a retailer’s overall profitability. And one nagging issue in this arena is the number of holsters you’re required to stock to meet customer demand. You’ve no doubt learned that some models sell much faster than others while some sit there month after month after month gathering nothing but dust.

Stealth Operator, a manufacturer of highquality nylon-polymer and leather handgun holsters, body armor, armor carriers, and other accessories, is here to help. In fact, for the past 10 years, the company has produced the bestselling multi-fit gun holster.

“With one SKU covering more than 150 different firearms—including Glock, Sig Sauer, Taurus, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, and much more—we are the perfect solution for the multigun owner or the dealer looking to cut down on their extensive holster inventory,” says Andy Marr, Stealth Operator’s business director.

“The UMC is the ultimate complement to the Stealth Operator holster,” says Marr. “Whether your customer carries every day or just needs a range solution, the combination of a Stealth Operator holster with the Pitbull Tactical UMC is a terrific selling duo.”

“In addition, dealers will no longer need to carry a myriad of holster configurations. With Stealth Operator and Pitbull Tactical, dealers now have at hand the solution to that massive inventory-heavy holster wall. Stop carrying holsters that don’t move by replacing

them with holsters that work with practically every gun and magazine you carry.”

According to Marr, both holsters offer positive retention with absolutely no adjustments.

“Stealth Operator, with its patented Frame-Loc Technology, fits more than 150 different models with positive retention,” he says. “This is not a cheap woven nylon ‘universal’ holster with no active retention. The Stealth Operator holds your gun securely in place until you need it. The Pitbull UMC uses a reinforced silicone flex band that automatically expands to fit both single- and double-stack magazines. The UMC also will work with the rounds facing either forward or backward, so you can change your carry orientation without adjustment.”

Staying Ahead of the Curve

These days, product development and marketing campaigns need to keep abreast of quickly evolving consumer demands.

Alifelong hunter and angler, Rafe Nielsen graduated from Utah’s Weber State with a degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations. His dream was to work at Browning, but his first internship was at Cabela’s. While there he worked on the website and as a copywriter. That internship led to Nielsen’s first job as a copywriter for Browning, a position he held for a year before moving into product development, where he would spend the next decade. His experience developing new products helped prepare Nielsen for his current job in marketing, a position he has held for the last eight years.

SHOT Daily: What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the industry in the next five years?

Rafe Nielsen: Because the landscape is changing so fast, our challenges will be not only keeping up with the demands of customers, but how we stay ahead of the curve. From a product standpoint, we have to keep up with technology. We also have to beat the competition on the latest and greatest trends in what the consumer wants. From a marketing standpoint, we have to constantly be up to date on how to communicate with customers. Digital and social media strategies are constantly changing, and companies that don’t keep up will fall by the wayside.

Sd: What opportunities do you see?

RN: We obviously have seen an increase in participation and new customers. This growth opens all kinds of doors for new products, expanding market share, and getting creative with innovation. And since today’s consumers are more educated and technically savvy, it gives us the chance to dive deep into what really makes our products better.

Sd: When you get up in the morning, what gets you excited about working in the industry?

RN: There is nothing more satisfying than having an influence and making a difference in something you love. Every day I work on projects that ultimately are designed to change the landscape of our company and industry. And when you get to do that with such an iconic brand as Browning, it’s even more exciting and rewarding.

Sd: How will you meet the expectations of your customers?

RN: Our motto is “The Best There Is,” and I think our customers have come to expect that from us. So, having the best products on the market is key.

Sd: In a very competitive world, how does Browning stay ahead of the pack?

RN: Technologies and innovation play a huge role in staying ahead. We’re an old brand, and we can’t rest on our laurels. So, always coming up with new and innovative product is a key component. But more importantly, it’s about the overall customer experience. People want to connect with a brand. If you can connect quality product with messaging that resonates with a

Rafe Nielsen,

customer, you have a winning combination. We like to say that we sell heartbeats as much as we sell products.

Sd: You have said that “Browning products must speak for themselves.” What do you mean by that?

RN: Browning has a rich history of quality and innovation—so much so that our guns are passed along from generation to generation. There is an inherent expectation from our current customers that our products today must meet the same high standards of the past. A Browning is a Browning, whether it was built back in the days of John M. Browning or now comes out of one of our modern facilities. We have to be true to our roots; we have to live up to the expectations that have been created for generations.

Sd: The Buckmark is one of the most recognized and iconic logos in the industry. What steps does Browning take to protect its integrity?

RN: We have strict policies in place on how and where it can be used. We don’t allow modifications to the design, colors, or usage. But more importantly, I think we protect it best by the quality of goods as well as the people and organizations that we associate with and that represent our brand. We pride ourselves on these

One of Nielsen’s primary tasks is protecting the brand’s reputation for quality and performance.

associations and how we’re represented. And that’s the best way to protect the reputation of a brand and logo.

Sd: How has marketing changed?

RN: I’ve now been in the industry 20 years. Back in those days marketing and advertising were dominated by print ads and TV commercials. And honestly, it was pretty simple. The channels to our customers were narrow and direct. Now our customers get their information from so many different channels it’s hard to target and focus a message. Print and TV are still relevant, but the digital world is so much bigger and diverse. You have to broaden your message to accommodate many different channels, and those messages need to reach the totality of your audience. Essentially, now you have to be good at all forms of communication, from print to social to video, and on and on. It’s a far more complex world, but frankly, it’s more rewarding, too. You can see the immediate impact of your efforts, make real time adjustments, and capitalize on your successes. Booth #10938 (browning.com)

Nielsen can often be found in the field using Browning products. Such hands-on experience keeps him connected to the expectations of his customers.

Growing the Sport

Benelli USA is committed to helping its dealers reach a new generation of hunters.

More than two years after the pandemic-driven resurgence began, participation in hunting and other shooting sports remains strong. Across the country, first-time and former hunters are continuing to head afield. Savvy firearms manufacturers and retailers have been working hard to turn these newcomers into lifelong hunting enthusiasts, and Benelli USA and their dealer network are spearheading the efforts with a multipronged strategy.

High-Touch Approach

Unlike other gun manufacturers, Benelli USA has long employed a strictly direct-to-dealer model. By avoiding the wholesale distribution channel, Benelli USA is able to develop closer relationships with their dealers and provide them with an increased level of support. This high-touch approach ultimately helps Benelli’s dealers better connect with their customers.

“We don’t do business with every dealer in the marketplace, but we tend to develop relationships that create destination points for our brand,” says Tom DeBolt, chief operating officer/general manager of Benelli USA and president of Stoeger Industries. “We see it as a privilege to be able to partner with those key dealers and try to bring the level of service that they expect, the level of training, product knowledge, and, of course, a flow of new products between the five different brands we have as a company. Where you find our products, you can find a wide assortment, and you’re going to find a deep level of expertise.”

Hunting may be considered a traditional sport, but the ways in which retailers are reaching hunters continue to evolve. DeBolt believes that innovative dealers—those who are willing to try new tactics— are the ones who will make the biggest impact and reap the most rewards.

“Many of them have developed an online presence, for example, and are adding that buying option as they become omni-channel retailers. They bring expertise on a local level and offer training

classes, and that makes a huge difference,” DeBolt says. “Some of them are very good at doing programming and bringing value-add to their customer base. Hopefully, that person comes back in their store more regularly and is investing in more products as they become more engaged in the sport.”

World-Class Content

Marketing is another way Benelli USA is helping their dealers reach hunters. The company invests heavily and consistently in marketing efforts—even during times when the broader shooting sports industry is experiencing a slowdown. When other brands are pulling back on their advertising, Benelli keeps their foot on the gas pedal.

“We have a very aggressive approach to marketing across all of our brands, not just Benelli,” DeBolt says. “We’ve gone to the edges of the earth to film content and documentaries that are truly aspirational. Not everybody will go to that extreme to hunt, but we know from the comments we receive that they love to see those experiences and live it through those mediums.”

Creating educational content that’s tailored for online and digital platforms is another key piece to Benelli’s strategy. As more hunters turn to the internet to learn about products and techniques, Benelli is working overtime to provide that content—and it’s paying off.

“Obviously, people are connecting and doing research in the digital world. We continue to invest in that through social media, through digital platforms, and through compelling content because our customers want to learn about their products today and they want to learn in different ways,” DeBolt says. “They’re always moving forward, and we have to do the same.”

Long-Term Commitment

Access to land remains one of the biggest obstacles for hunters everywhere—especially those

who are new to the sport. As more people get outdoors, public lands are becoming increasingly overcrowded and overhunted. In many states, private lands are often tied up in long-term leases. On top of that, simply knowing where to start looking for places to hunt can be confounding for first-timers.

“It’s very important for all of us who are established and have a history of being in the outdoors to welcome these new hunters in. We have to bring them into the fold because they’re going to be the fuel that helps us grow our industry long term,” DeBolt says. “We need to be educating the consumer about what’s new and what innovations are happening, but we also have to be aware of how we get them out to the field. That’s critical.”

As a company, Benelli USA partners with their retailers and conservation groups to help get hunters into the field. They also encourage their team members to spend time outdoors and actively participate in helping grow the shooting sports. A number of Benelli employees are actively engaged in mentoring new hunters, veteran hunters, and youth hunters by taking them on hunts locally.

“We really believe in the programs that the conservation groups and the state-level DNRs are running to promote first-time hunters. We take a lot of time as a team to take people shooting or hunting. We’re not a huge organization, but we encourage everybody to take people out to the field, whether it’s shooting clays, hunting for the first time, or teaching different types of classes to get people comfortable shooting firearms. We are committed to that long term,” DeBolt says. “Many of our retailers are also looking forward and trying to do more of this. We’re partnering with several of them

currently to make sure we’re well aligned with pulling new people into the firearms world and getting them using the products. The worse thing for us is when somebody buys something and doesn’t use it. That’s a one-time engagement. Our goal is to get them coming back repeatedly. That’s good for the industry, good for our business, and ultimately good for the future of shooting sports.” Booth #13638

Kahr Firearms Group introduces the “Last Full Measure Project”.

Providing firearm contributions to American veteran, active duty, law enforcement, and first responder focused non-profit charities.

Every day, many Americans put themselves in harm’s way, acting without fear or selfishness, to stand between the innocent and the evil, or in the face of natural disaster. To these brave individuals, no thought is given of danger, reward, or gain of heroic accolades. They simply do their duty, to their fellow Americans, and in many cases the price they pay is the last full measure of their devotion to serving others. It is to these heroes that Kahr Firearms Group has chosen to make the company’s focus on charitable giving.

Beginning in 2023, Kahr introduces the “Last Full Measure Project”. Through this initiative, Kahr Firearms Group expresses its thanks to these brave Americans. The Last Full Measure Project makes available firearm donations for non-profit charitable organizations servicing American active duty, veterans, police, and first responders. These items can be used by the recipients to raise funds to help heroes and their families in their time of need.

Anyone interested in working with Kahr Firearms Group in support of veteran, law enforcement, or first responder focused non-profit charities, should email marketing@kahr.com

GUNS

For 2023, retailers will see the emergence of some interesting and promising trends. The word “lightweight” appears in a majority of manufacturers’ descriptions of their new guns, with “easy” following not far behind. Increasingly, knowledgeable consumers are looking for guns that empower them to be better, whether they’re busting clays, taking down game, or enhancing their personal safety. For most, a lighter firearm means easier manipulation and less fatigue at the end of the day or shift. When companies step up and address consumer feedback with improved products, everyone wins.

Other interesting developments include the rise of the 2011-style single-action pistol. Competitive shooters were the first to turn on to the benefits of greater capacity in the responsive, 1911-inspired format. Recently, the trend is growing within the non-competition market also. And while the current season has seen less excitement over new rifle calibers, the 5.7x28mm is enjoying a revival. It’s easy to understand why, as the little cartridge performs well in both handguns and short- and mid-range rifle applications. And it does so with while delivering very little in the way of recoil, providing a way for any new or seasoned shooter to enjoy multiple applications from the same load.

RIFLES

BERGARA

Bergara continues to push the envelope of accuracy via a pair of ground-breaking technologies with their carbon barrels and carbon stocks.

First is a development Bergara calls the B-14 Squared Concept. This involves adding a proprietary carbon-fiber monocoque stock to the line, the internal structure of which provides greater rigidity and strength.

The new Crest takes advantage of the B-14 Squared Concept by utilizing the carbon-fiber monocoque stock paired to a 410 stainless-steel 20- or 22-inch barrel. Other features include a 90-degree bolt-throw angle, cone-shaped bolt-nose ejector (which assures smooth feeding), a sliding plate extractor, and a hinged floor plate or detachable magazine, which accepts ACIS-sized magazines. The two-position safety is part of the trigger assembly. It allows the rifle to be unloaded while in the safe position. Finished in Sniper Gray Cerakote. Unloaded weight is 6.8 pounds. SRP: $1,699.

Second, Bergara adds carbon barrels to some of their Wilderness line. The HMR Carbon Wilderness features the Bergara B-14 action that includes a springloaded ejector, side-mounted bolt stop, and a fluted 4140 chromoly steel one-piece-bolt body. It also features the carbon barrel in (20, 22, or 24 inches, depending on the caliber) and accepts an ACIS-sized magazine. Other features include a side-mounted bolt stop and a 90-degree bolt-throw angle. The two-position safety is part of the trigger assembly. It allows the rifle to be unloaded while the safety is engaged.

Available calibers are 6.5 PRC, .308 Win., and .300 Win. Mag. Unloaded weight is 7.15 pounds. SRP: starts at $1,599. Like all other Bergara rifles, it delivers sub-MOA accuracy.

The Ridge Carbon Wilderness also utilizes a carbon-fiber barrel (20, 22, or 24, inches, depending on caliber). It is available in a gray Cerakote stock in 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, .308 Win., and .300 Win. Mag. Unloaded weight is 6.4 pounds. SRP: Starts at $1,399. Booth #12219 (bpioutdoors.com)

The threaded muzzle will also accept a suppressor. The two-position safety is conveniently located for natural and instantaneous operation. And loading is a breeze with its four-round (shortaction), flush-fit, detachable magazine. Available in 22- or 24-inch barrel lengths in Realtree Hillside camo. CZ-USA

The 600 Alpha line of rifles has nine chamberings: 7.62x39, .223 Remington, .224 Valkyrie, 6mm Creedmoor, .300 Win. Mag., .308 Win., 6.5 Creedmoor, .30-06, and 6.5 Precision Rifle Cartridge.

Dubbed as “the rifle that can do it all,” CZ opted to reduce weight with a polymer stock and aluminum frame while preserving it in the semi-heavy barrel, a combination that should make for a mobile and accurate shooting experience. Its target market is the hunter with appreciation of the technical advantages of benchrest rifle design.

The detachable, locking magazine holds three or five rounds, depending on caliber. The black polymer stock has serrated grip zones and such features as a parallel comb and vertical grip, touches borrowed from the competitive precision-rifle arena. Barrel lengths range from 18 inches in the 7.62x39 to 24 inches in other calibers.

Although the weights and calibers of the Alpha vary widely, the SRP does not. It’s $749. Each comes with CZ’s sub-MOA guarantee. Booth #12654 (cz-usa.com)

MOSSBERG

Mossberg is now offering the latest Hornady Precision Rifle Cartridge, the 7mm PRC, in its series of Patriot Predator bolt-action rifles. Designed to outperform existing 7mm cartridges in a standard long-action rifle, the 7mm PRC is a match-grade cartridge that delivers consistent velocity and repeatable accuracy. As such, the 7mm PRC is the perfect “match” for Mossberg’s suppressor-ready Patriot Predator platform. Two synthetic-stocked models are available, both of which feature a barrel length of 24 inches and a 1:8 twist rate to maximize the performance of the 7mm PRC cartridge.

The Patriot Predator bolt-action is based on Mossberg’s proven twin-lug push-feed machined-steel action, which is fed from a flush-fit polymer magazine. The free-floating, carbon-steel fluted barrel is threaded for a suppressor or muzzle brake and includes a protective thread cap.

For the addition of optics, the Patriot Predator is equipped with a receiver-mounted Picatinny rail. Patriot rifles feature Mossberg’s patented LBA (Lightning Bolt Action) user-adjustable trigger with a 2- to 7-pound range of adjustment for consistent shot placement. Rounding out this full-featured rifle is an oversized bolt handle, a spiral-fluted bolt, and sling swivel studs.

Stock options include a Flat Dark Earth stock with matte blue metal finish and TrueTimber Strata camouflaged stock with complementing Patriot Brown Cerakote metal finish. SRP: $519-$616.

The Patriot LR Tactical Rifle line consists of three models: 6.5 Creedmoor (22-inch barrel), 6.5 PRC (24-inch barrel), and .308 Win. (22-inch barrel). The stock is user-adjustable for length of pull by the use of three spacers, and the comb/cheekrest height is user-adjustable up to two inches.

The MDT stock has aluminum V-Block bedding for improved accuracy and an M-LOK compatible forend. Other standard features include a patented LBA adjustable trigger, suppressor-ready threaded barrel with removable cap and an 11-degree match crown, oversized bolt handle, spiral fluted bolt, topmount Picatinny rail/scope base, and 7-round or 10-round MDT AICS-style magazine. The patented LBA Adjustable Trigger is user-adjustable from 2 to 7 pounds. The trigger guard is oversized for use with gloved hands, and there is an integrated magazine-release lever.

RUGER

Ruger’s breakout design, the LC Carbine, chambered in 5.7x28mm, may take some retailers by surprise. But, considering that Ruger reawakened the 5.7 market about a year ago with the Ruger-5.7 Pistol, maybe it’s not such a surprise after all.

The design is a fresh interpretation in the semi-auto carbine category. Space is saved with bolt-over-barrel configuration, and the pistol grip doubles as the magazine well. But its compact utility doesn’t end there. A folding stock and adjustable length of pull make it portable and ready for youth or adult shooters. Blazing ballistics and low recoil of the 5.7 load qualify it as a candidate for long shots on vermin, when fitted with a magnifying optic, or target practice or pest control at closer ranges using the included fold-down iron sights installed on the LC’s full-length Picatinny rail. Those who want to avoid scaring coyotes or hogs can add a suppressor to the threaded 16.25-inch barrel.

Ruger packed a lot of handy features into this 5.9-pound package. There’s an M-LOK rail on the forend for accessories, and multiple QD sling sockets are included. The safety is ambidextrous; the charging handle is reversible. This should be a great gun for learning the basics and for real work in the outdoors. SAVAGE

Early 2023 marks the release of a re-designed straight-pull Impulse big-game rifle, the Impulse Mountain Hunter. In response to customer requests for a lighter rifle that’s easier to tote over long distances in the western backcountry, Savage shaved off some bulk on the earlier Impulse, but retained beloved features like the AcuTrigger and AccuStock. The carbon fiber-wrapped 22- or 24-inch stainless-steel barrel by Proof Research will deliver accuracy for those across-canyon shots. Also on board is a muzzle break. The dark gray synthetic stock is fitted with a one-piece 20 MOA Picatinny rail, ready to carry a suitable scope. The aluminum receiver and overall emphasis on lightness should please any big-game hunter whose pursuit requires hiking. It’ll be available in nine popular chamberings for big game. SRP: $2,437.

Never loathe to embrace new cartridges, Savage also announced that the existing Apex, Impulse, Timberline, High Country, and UltraLite lines will now be chambered in 7mm PRC. This new cartridge, launched by Hornady, boasts a high ballistic coefficient and uses common, temperature-stable, magnum-speed propellants. Prices range from $709 to $2,437, depending on model and specs.

The 110 Carbon Predator joins the iconic Model 110 bolt-action family. Weighing in at trim 6.5 pounds, the rifle features the user-adjustable AccuTrigger, a crisp, matte-black carbon-steel receiver, and a carbon-fiber-wrapped PROOF Research stainless rifled barrel with threaded muzzle. Other key features include an AccuStock with AccuFit Technology and an AICS detachable-box magazine. Available calibers are 6mm ARC., .223 Rem., .22-250 Rem., .308 Win., 6.5 Creedmoor, and .300 BLK. Safety was also in mind, as the design allows the chamber to be cleared while not autoloading the next round in the tube. The Nova Turkey also is priced to allow the entry-level hunter to score his or her own Benelli for only $559. Booth #13638 (benelliusa.com)

Five choke tubes are included for further refinement of shot patterns. Ergonomic updates include a thicker recoil pad and taller comb for quick, comfortable handling. Among other features is a removable A2-style carry handle and flipup rear and front sights for tactical use.

Escort describes the DF-12 as “overbuilt.” Its tough alloy upper and lower combine to make an 8.9pound shotgun. The chromed barrel is corrosion-resistant. A reversing charging handle makes it southpawfriendly. This should be one tough contender for a shotgun that can move between home defense and game. Booth #72449 (escortshotgunsusa.com)

FRANCHI

Franchi has launched new variants of its autoloader Affinity waterfowl line. The new Affinity 3 is offered in 12 or 20 gauge, with a Mossy Oak Bottomland or RealTree Max-5 pattern synthetic stock. The 12 gauge is available with a 26- or 28-inch barrel; the 20 gauge has a 26-inch barrel. Steel surfaces are Cerakoted in brown or bronze. Capacity is 4+1. Also in the mix is a left-handed option in 20 gauge, a complement to the existing left-handed 12-gauge model. Affinity 3 is made for the hunter who wants a light-swinging gun that runs both 2.75- and 3-inch shells. SRP: $1,099.

Traditionalists have not been forgotten. Waterfowl hunters who prefer a walnut stock coupled to an Italian scattergun, but don’t have a small fortune on hand, have a new, lightweight choice in the form of the 20-gauge Instinct L. This over/under has a 26-inch ventilated barrel and vented ribs. It joins its 12-gauge stablemate of the same name. SRP: $1,449. Booth #13638 (franchiusa.com)

FN

FN has added a subcompact pistol to its compensator-equipped Edge series within the Model 509 lineup. The 509 CC Edge with a 4.25-inch barrel is available with 10-, 12-, and 15-round magazines. It’s offered in gray and black/gray. What sets the 509 CC Edge apart from other compensated guns is its field strip procedure, which FN claims is the fastest in the industry among compensated pistols. It stays on trend with a flat-face trigger and pre-installed optic or slide cut for a low-profile setting for an optic. SRP: $1,569. Booth #11860 (fnamerica.com)

BOND ARMS

Last year Bond Arms released a centerfire variant of its super-slim derringer Stinger line. Now comes the Stinger in .22 LR. That’s not the only news, though. These little guns were originally crafted from aluminum, but a sudden supply stoppage forced a change to steel construction, something already deeply familiar in the Bond Arms shop. In rimfire configuration, the steel Stinger remains so light that pocket carry with it remains very discreet. And with virtually no recoil, anyone in the family can enjoy the 22 LR Stinger. SMITH & WESSON

The Equalizer is a carry gun that borrows numerous elements of their popular and easy-racking EZ series while answering the call for better capacity in a small package. It has a 3.7-inch barrel and magazines that hold 10, 13, or 15 rounds. Its singleaction trigger has a palpable, audible reset. A straighter, 18-degree grip angle will please many shooters who find more common angles uncomfortable. Thumb safety is optional. The slide is optics-ready. The Equalizer will surely be the answer for S&W customers who love the ergonomics of the EZ model, but found it a tad too big for concealment use. SRP: $599.99. Built for competition right out of the box, the Competitor comes with a 5-inch barrel, has an enhanced sear for lighter, crisper trigger let-off, and includes a flared magazine well for fast and efficient reloads. Boasting a new look, the aggressive lightening cuts on both the top and sides of the slide ultimately reduce the amount of weight in front of the chamber and, in return, help improve the recoil balance point. The slide is cut for optics, but includes a fiber-optic front sight and a blackedout serrated rear sight. The Competitor comes with an oversized mag release that is reversible for both right- and left-handed users and ships with a total of four magazines. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY

Springfield Armory broke perhaps the biggest pistol news of 2022 when they announced their first 2011—the DS Prodigy. As the name implies, it has a double-stack magazine with 17- or 20-round capacity. There is also a 26-round optional mag. The DS Prodigy is currently available only in 9mm.

Rather than making consumers wait for one small line extension at a time, Springfield took the bold step of releasing four editions at once. There’s a 4.25-inch barrel size and a governmentsize Prodigy, each of which is offered with or without the company’s HEX Dragonfly red-dot optic. An ambidextrous safety is standard. Each version ships with a HEX-compatible mounting plate. Other plate footprints are available for purchase through SA’s Agency Optic System store.

Like the single-stack Emissary, the DS Prodigy has a hammer-forged slide and forged stainless match-grade bull barrel with 1:16 twist. The railed Prodigy design is less angular than the Emissary, but the heft remains. SRP: $1,499, without optic; $1,699, optics preinstalled. Booth #11217 (springfield-armory.com)

TAURUS

Keeping with the trend of companies releasing micro-compact models and then moving up to larger editions, the new 9mm GX4XL takes the GX4 to “XL” status from an additional inch on the slide, which is gas nitride-coated carbon steel. It encases a 3.71-inch, DLC-coated stainless-steel barrel.

The T.O.R.O. (Taurus Optic-Ready Option) slide is available for the GX4XL. This no-plate mount fits several current carry optics including, but not limited to, Shield, Trijicon, Holosun, Riton, and Sightmark models.

Capacity remains 11 or 13 rounds, with a 10-round option available. Among other standard features are a flat-face trigger, serrated blackout adjustable rear sight, and two backstrap choices. SRP: $429 standard slide; $459, T.O.R.O. slide without optic; $549, with a factory-installed Riton optic and BUIS. Booth #13038 (taurususa.com)

CONCEALED TRENDS IN CARRY

As new gun owners seek concealed carry options, the industry offers new options.

Concealed carry isn’t new, but the surge in pro-gun legislation over the past couple years has led to millions of new gun owners and tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of new people carrying concealed. With those kinds of numbers, we’ve witnessed some new trends in concealed carry.

FIREARMS

BIGGER GUNS

For a while, it seemed that the smaller the gun, the faster it flew off of the shelves. However, we’ve seen a resurgence in bigger guns taking a bigger share of the market. Some companies have introduced newer versions of the compact guns, but in a slightly bigger format, and they’re selling just as well as the original smaller models.

METAL FRAMES

Polymer is here to stay in the world of concealed carry, but metal guns have certainly made a comeback. While there’s a certain clientele that will always prefer a beefy steel gun because “concealed carry is supposed to be comforting and not comfortable,” aluminum alloys provide a perfect blend between strength and weight when paired with stainless steel in areas that need it. Smith & Wesson (Booth #14743) has capitalized on this with two of their new handguns: the CSX and the M&P M2.0 METAL.

The CSX uses an aluminum alloy frame with a stainless-steel slide and barrel and interchangeable polymer backstraps for user adjustment of ergonomics and concealability. The result is a micro-compact gun that weighs 19.5 ounces and has a 9mm capacity of 10+1 or 12+1.

The M&P M2.0 METAL is proof that people aren’t shying away from concealing a full-size gun. Using the same material allocations as the CSX, the M2.0 METAL weighs 30 ounces and has a capacity of 17+1.

41

 Ruger SR1911 is available in 10mm.

BIGGER CALIBERS

Almost 40 years ago, the FBI adopted (and then subsequently dropped) the 10mm Auto as their new service cartridge. When it was replaced by .40 S&W in short order, the 10mm cartridge languished for a bit. But it eventually found a dedicated following of shooters and concealed carriers. For some people, bigger is always better and they want to carry the biggest caliber conceivable for them. In many cases, that’s the 10mm Auto, and manufacturers are answering the call.

Smith & Wesson’s M&P M2.0 pistol line is available in 10mm, and their Model 610 doubleaction revolver is also an option for those who prefer a wheel gun. It’s available in 6.5-inch barrel and 4-inch-barrel versions of six rounds of what some pundits refer to as “God’s caliber.”

The 1911 platform is also a popular choice for 10mm carriers. Ruger’s SR1911 (Booth #72327) is readily available in that caliber and Nighthawk Custom (Booth #70326) true to their name offers a custom caliber upgrade in a number of their 1911 pistols.

HOLSTERS APPENDIX CARRY

One of the biggest trend shifts in concealed carry is the rise of the appendix-carry position. Much of that was driven by the rising trend in smaller concealed carry handguns over the years. While it would be unwise to say that the 3-o’clock to 4-o’clock position is waning, it would be equally foolish to say that appendix carry is a fad that’s going to fade. It has become incredibly popular, and holster makers have answered the call for comfortable appendix holsters.

 Galco’s Stow-N-Go and Tuck-N-Go holsters are popular options.

NeoMag’s Alias system (Booth #42828) brings a modularity to the world of carry methods that’s unlike anything else out there. You can now use your preferred holster in a wide variety of applications. The Alias is a universal holster-attachment system that features a two-part design of clips and receivers. The clip is attached to the holster, and the receiver is either mounted on your belt or a hard-mount version that can be affixed to desks, cars, safes, etc. With a simple click, you can attach or remove the holster and the clip mount from any of the receivers you have and move it to another one quickly and easily.

CUSTOM FITS

 The Crossbreed Appendix Carry holster is made with Kydex and leather.

CrossBreed Holsters’ (Booth #15029) aptly named Appendix Carry holster was purpose-built with this carry position in mind with the use of small- and medium-frame guns. It’s made with a Kydex shell and a leather, cowhide, or horsehide backer. Galco’s Stow-N-Go and Tuck-N-Go (Booth #11260) holsters are popular options that are made of premium steerhide with metal reinforcements, and their QuickTuk Cloud is a Kydex-andnylon hybrid that is also geared toward comfortable appendix carry.

MODULARITY

Concealed carry has often been limited by the clothing you wear and the type of holster you use. Certain types of holsters don’t work with certain articles of clothing or you need a different method of holster attachment to carry in a different manner.

With all of the new models of handguns that are entering the market at breakneck speeds, it can be hard for holster companies to keep up with production. This is especially true for holsters that aren’t meant to be a universal fit and instead rely on a cast or blue gun for fitting. Plus, there’s always that one person who’s carrying something that’s obscure or is running a less-than-common light or laser on their rail.

TRENDS IN CONCEALED CARRY 42 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS DAILY ❚ DAY 1, JANUARY 17, 2023
 Federal 30 Super Carry ammo bridges the gap between 9mm and .380 Auto.

1791 Gunleather (Booth #75207) fixed the issue of not being able to find the exact holster you need, no matter how obscure the carry gun may be. Their Ultra Custom holster uses MemoryLok technology that offers Kydex-style retention with the comfort of leather.

The end user heats the holster at home and then molds the gun themselves with the provided tools. As an added bonus, the holster can be reheated and remolded as needed so that it can be used on a variety of different guns. The Ultra Custom is available in six different sizes and with or without rail accessories.

AMMUNITION

BRIDGE CALIBERS

The name of the game in concealed carry has always been about carrying the most gun you can comfortably handle with as much ammo to match. For a long time, there’s been a gap between the .380 Auto and the 9mm Luger. You had to either sacrifice performance for quantity with the .380 or quantity for performance with the 9mm. Federal’s introduction of the 30 Super Carry caliber is hoping to change that.

Nighthawk Custom’s GRP and President models offer an increased carrying capacity of 12+1 over 8+1 while maintaining the company’s commitment to high-end quality.

Smith & Wesson’s Shield Plus model in 30 Super Carry adds an extra three rounds over the 9mm version, and the Shield EZ model adds an extra two rounds over the 9mm and .380 versions.

DEFENSIVE RIMFIRES

Not all of the recent surge in concealed carriers are comfortable (or capable) of handling the more traditional centerfire calibers. For a long time, the concept of a defensive rimfire round was dismissed, but that has changed with the introduction of the Punch Personal Defense .22LR rimfire cartridge from Federal. The 29-grain nickel-plated lead bullet boasts a muzzle velocity of 1,080 feet per second from a shortbarreled handgun, and the bullet has been designed to minimize expansion in favor of reaching greater penetration depths for critical hits. New to the line this year is Punch 22 WMR, which uses a larger 45-grain bullet.

Whether a person chooses to carry this defensive rimfire cartridge in their primary concealed firearm or in a backup gun, the fact remains that any kind of gun beats no gun at all, and all incoming rounds— regardless of caliber—have the right-of-way.

ACCESSORIES

RED DOT OPTICS

As red dot optics have gotten smaller and more reliable, they’ve become increasingly popular on

concealed-carry guns. They provide the shooter with ultra-fast target acquisition that doesn’t require lining up front and rear sights. In a personal defense situation where seconds count, that’s a big plus. Whether it’s the more conventional stylings of the Mini Reflex and Micro Reflex models from Primary Arms (Booth #70455) , the Liberty and Justice models from Swampfox Tactical Optics (Booth #40132) , or the visually distinct ACRO from Aimpoint (Booth #13007) , there’s whole host of companies that are making red dot optics with concealed carry in mind, so gun owners have no shortage of options from which to choose. Leupold’s DeltaPoint Micro red dot sight (Booth #12421) , introduced last year is also worth a look.

OPTICS-READY SLIDES

The rise of red dot optics on carry guns has also led to the introduction of many handgun models being available from the factory with optics-ready cuts already present on the top of the slide. Conversely, there’s an equally large supply of aftermarket slides with optics cuts and plenty of machining companies that are willing and able to cut an existing slide for an optic.

WEAPON LIGHTS

Mounting a light to your defensive handgun has always been a polarizing topic, but there’s certainly no shortage of new

shooters who are choosing to outfit their carry gun with one. As technology has progressed, the lights have gotten brighter, smaller, and longer lasting.

Surefire (Booth #12270) is a trusted name in lights, and their XSC light is a duty-grade, microcompact option that is designed to work with a whole host of the most popular slim-frame concealed carry pistols. Their XC1 light is a similar compact design that also fits many of the most popular concealed choices on the market.

Streamlight’s (Booth #11468) new TLR-10 gun light with red laser and rear switch options is also a good choice.

THE WRAP UP

Reports of record-setting NICS checks each and every month are a welcome sight, providing solid proof that more and more people are exercising their right to keep and bear arms as well as protect themselves both in and out of their homes. I think it’s safe to say that our industry will continue to innovate and evolve to meet the demands of new and emerging trends in concealed carry as the number of new carriers just keeps going up and up.

Accessories SELLING ESSENTIAL AR

The AR-15 is one of the most modular firearms to ever exist. To many, it is an adult version of Legos. Our ability to modify and add on to this great gun is almost endless. From sights to lasers, there seems to be a spot for everything. In fact, the accessories market rivals the actual manufacturing side of this realm; hundreds of companies make components designed to appeal to owners of ARs. To many, the process can be overwhelming. This is especially true for the new gun owner. That’s where you come in. Your job is to help this new owner purchase and install accessories that will enhance their enjoyment of the gun. Based on my experience, the following six categories are the most requested accessories by new owners. They also happen to be some of the most essential and sensible accessories on the market.

STOCKS

Although a new AR will come with a stock, it may be a very simple and entry-level style. Many shooters opt for an aftermarket stock that fits them better. These can range from fixed old-school-style stocks to modern lightweight collapsible stocks with storage compartments. Of all the styles available, I encourage the use of a collapsible stock. It provides the user with the ability to adjust length of pull should they put on a heavy jacket or even a tactical vest. Aftermarket stocks are easily installed

CUSTOMER FORUM

and will add a level of customization they will enjoy. The major players in this category include companies like Magpul (Booth #11660), Mission First (Booth #72948), and Hogue (Booth #14838). These stocks are not only high quality, but they come with solid brand recognition, making sales easier.

OPTICS

Optics are another great accessory. While iron sights are good, optics are better. When used

correctly add-on optics improve accuracy. As with all accessories, they range in style and price. Solid performers at reasonable prices are red-dot or holographic-style optics. These work well at the distances at which I find most new shooters working. These optics also have the benefit of being used with both eyes open, giving the user better awareness downrange.

The following questions are typically asked of me in my training sessions. You will no doubt hear them as well.

Question: Can I put a light and a laser on my rifle?

Answer: Yes, you can mount pretty much whatever you want on your new gun. In this case, I would seek out a unit that has both these features integrated into one unit. I try to keep the number of items on my rail to a minimum just to keep the weight down. The more you put on your gun, the more it will weigh. While it may seem like no big deal in the comfort of your home, you will notice the difference if you do a course with it.

Question: Are all optics equal?

Answer: No. Optic quality can range from those intended for airsoft guns to glass built for special operations personnel. I would encourage you to take your time and buy the best quality optic you can. Good glass can be expensive, but you get what you pay for. A hasty purchase of a cheap optic just to get glass on the gun is almost always followed with regret. These cheap optics rarely hold zero well and are notorious for just dying on the range. I live by the motto, “Buy once, cry once.”

Question: Can I put a rifle stock on my AR15 pistol?

Answer: The answer to this one is a huge no. AR15s are broken into two groups: rifles and pistols. An AR pistol is a pistol-length AR15 with no stock. In place of a stock, an AR pistol usually has a pistol buffer tube or similar piece that does not allow for the attachment of a traditional stock. To qualify as a pistol, there must be no vertical foregrip. Many people use “braces” in place of a traditional stock. The problem is that most, if not all, AR pistols have a barrel length of less than 16 inches, which is the minimum for rifles. If you put a stock on your pistol, the ATF considers the gun a short-barrel rifle and requires that it be registered through the NFA at a cost of $200. Possession of the modified pistol without the paperwork in line can cause legal issues.

Question: Can I put a competition trigger in my home defense rifle?

Answer: While there is no official answer to this, I would advise against it. Most competition triggers are light and are designed to fire with little effort. In a self-defense-based gun, you want a standard trigger that provides sufficient resistance to avoid a negligent discharge. In short, you do not want to unintentionally fire the rifle after being startled. Having a self-defense-centered trigger can help you avoid a possible tragedy.

Question: Should I mount a bipod on my rifle?

Answer: This depends on the application in which you will be using the rifle. A bipod is an excellent accessory that helps you stabilize the gun and, in turn, enjoy great accuracy. The downside is that they can be heavy and cumbersome. If you plan on doing a great deal of bench-type shooting where you are very focused on accuracy, then a bipod can be a good choice. If this is a standard fighting-rifle set up, I suggest you ditch the bipod. The extra weight outweighs the benefit that you would occasionally get from it.

There are also several manufacturers in this space, which keeps prices competitive, something your customer will appreciate. Although major players, such Aimpoint (Booth #13007), Trijicon (Booth #10735), Eotech (Booth #20049), and Leapers UTG (Booth #72305) are titans in this space, other smaller companies such as Burris (Booth #13227) and Sightmark (Booth #12270) are making a serious play for consumer dollars with good quality at a reasonable price point. You can also recommend Leupold (Booth #12421) as well.

LIGHTS

Lights are next on the list. Like the rest of the accessory market, the tactical or weapon light market is full of options. In general, I prefer LED models that can generate between 300 and 600 lumens. You can offer a light with a pressure switch or a toggle switch, depending on the needs and desires of the customer. For the longest time, these lights were run with lithium 123A-style batteries, but advancements in LED design have allowed more and more to use common AA or

HANDGUARD

The handguard on the rifle is another area where I see many people make a change after they get their rifle. Some rifles come with plainJane plastic handguards, which limit the ability to add items in the front of the gun. There tends to be two major schools in this area; some prefer KeyMod-style holes for accessories; others use MLOK-style attachment slots. The choice is really up to your customer, as there are adapters readily available on the market. But in my experience, if I were forced to choose one, I would lean toward MLOK because I have found it to be very stable. Here, I believe you can’t go wrong with Magpul.

TRIGGERS

The factory trigger will be adequate for most shooters. However, upgrading to a mil-spec trigger almost always offers immediate performance improvements. The trigger market is deep and

shot. Like all the other items in our accessory search, there are many options. The two most common versions are the single-point and the two-point sling. The names are self-descriptive; the single-point connects to the gun at one point while the two-point connects at two different spots. The single-point is popular because

it allows easy manipulation of the gun on both sides of the body. The downside is that the gun tends to swing a lot when you are moving. I prefer a two-point sling. This version keeps the gun more stable, but requires some practicing when transitioning from strong- to support-side shooting. There is a design and color to fit the needs

Though the brand was conceived for a particular market segment—first responders, law enforcement, SWAT teams, tactical and military personnel, and more—Cohen says its blend of professionalism and technology, which incorporates both elite performance and great style, makes it the ideal daily-wear timepiece for a wide array of people. That wide appeal is one reason ProTek will be a comprehensive brand of watches comprised of several series within the brand.

The Series 2000 is a stainless-steel dive watch that is water resistant to 200 meters.

The launch collection consists of three series—a Carbon Composite Case dive (Series 1000), a 316L Stainless Steel case dive (Series 2000), and a Titanium Field (Series 3000). All watches feature the ProGlo self-powered illumination system that enables them to glow nonstop for 25 years so you can read time instantly in any light condition, including complete darkness. All watches have sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coatings and all run on dependable Japanese quartz movements from Miyota (a division of Citizen). The ProTek brand uses Miyota quartz movements throughout the entire line because of their robust nature, accuracy, and overall dependability. Series 1000 and 2000 use the Miyota 2S60 Japanese quartz movement—with plus or minus accuracy of 20 seconds per month—and each boasts a 10-year battery life. The Series 3000 Movement has a four-year battery.

“Each All Terrain series differs slightly in components used,” says Cohen. “Both dive series have tight unidirectional timing bezels (Carbon is 60-click, Steel is 120-click) that will not turn from inadvertent contact. Both also have 10-year batteries so the case need not be opened for battery changes for a decade, which is a good idea for any water watch. Dive watches are traditionally best sellers, and this will likely remain the case, but don’t overlook the venerable Field watch, which has been around since World War I and is considered the staple of military timepieces. With its mix of features, the ProTek Field series could be the best field watch money can buy, beginning with its titanium case that renders the watch so lightweight—only 46 grams–that you barely know you have it on. But one glance at night is all you need to know you are wearing a ProTek Field with its superlative lume provided by the largest tritium tubes available and executed in three colors for a veritable light show in the dark. Gazing at this dial in the dark is truly mesmerizing.”

According to Cohen, ProTek’s All-Terrain Watches are “Rugged at Heart.” By that, he means they are “created and designed for an active lifestyle, the perfect daily-wear timepiece that can take what life throws at you. As the name implies, ProTek possesses all the attributes of watches ideally suited for those who protect us. ProTek is a function-first

brand, but looks quite fashionable, too. It lives at the intersection of fashion and functionality, where professionalism meets technology.”

ProTek is the newest entry in the Time Concepts family of brands. “The very nature of this brand brings me back to my roots in the watch world,” Cohen says. “ProTek watches are ideal for individuals who put others before themselves. ProTek’s name has true meaning, one that is woven into the brand’s core. In fact, the name defines our brand and our watches.”

Cohen gave a lot of thought to the name for this watch. “Pro” stands for professionals at the top of their craft as well as others on their journey to the top. “These are the ones who put in the time, make countless sacrifices, and stop at nothing to pursue perfection,” he says.

The “Tek” portion of the name stands for the innovative, self-powered Swiss illumination technology built into every watch. Cohen pioneered this special enabling feature with Luminox, bringing this remarkable technology to the consumer arena.

“ProGlo illumination provides a non-stop continuous glow for up to 25 years, enabling the owner to read time-ay-a-glance, even in total darkness,” he

says. “This is the ultimate illumination technology in timepieces, and it’s the hallmark of the ProTek brand. The technology had been primarily used for military applications prior to the advent of Luminox. But I was able to bring this unsurpassed self-powered illumination technology to a wide audience when I founded Luminox, and now I have ratcheted up the overall quality and features in the new ProTek brand.”

The superior illumination technology to which he refers comes from Trigalight, but will be referred to as ProGlo illumination in ProTek watches. ProGlo lume is achieved in a laboratory where tritium gas is pumped into borosilicate glass tubes, the walls of which are lined with a phosphor. The tritium emits a beta particle, causing the phosphor to fluoresce. Different phosphors yield different glow colors.

“Making quality watches that combine function with outstanding design at reasonable prices is what we’re good at, and we’ve done it many times over,” he says.

As an example, he cites the carbon-composite case and bezel, which is a hallmark of the ProTek series. “The 1000 series case and bezel are made

The straps found on ProTek watches are not a secondary consideration. They are carefully matched to the intended use of the watch.

up of 30 percent carbon and 70 percent polycarbonate, which explains why it is called a ‘carboncomposite case,’” he says. “The use of polycarbonate as the polymer in our composite mix was a nobrainer because it delivers strength in a lightweight package. And the bezel is made of the same material as the case.”

ProTek uses only stamped embossed case backs, as seen on watches costing many times the price of ProTek. ProTek also uses screw-in case backs and crowns that help the watches achieve water resistance of 300 meters for Series 1000 and 200 meters for Series 2000. The Series 3000 Field watch has a push crown with O-rings and screw back for 100 meters of water resistance, more than adequate for a land-based watch. All series also have rubber O-rings on and around the crowns as well to help ensure excellent water resistance.

“From a design standpoint, both dive watches have stamped dials for added interest, with the Carbon series exhibiting a pebble texture dial surface and the Steel series a horizontal line motif,” he says. “The Field series has a flat dial befitting a military timepiece.”

The pursuit of perfection even includes the strap. “Having made watches using a wide array of straps over the years—leather, steel, or titanium bracelets—or some form of dive-type straps using polyurethane (PU), silicone, or rubber, we chose genuine rubber for our straps for the Series 1000 for optimum performance,” Cohen says. “PU straps tend to break too easily. Silicone has a nice feel, but it is a bit soft for our use, so we use real rubber for its mix of comfort and durability. Rubber straps are generally considered the best you can get for dive-style watches. The straps are soft and flexible yet strong and are molded around a steel tube insert in which spring pins go through for added strength and durability. All straps have one fixed keeper loop holding the first loop in place so it doesn’t slide; the second loop is adjustable. For both steel dive and titanium field series, we chose waterproof Italian leather straps that, unlike standard leather, begin soft, get softer with wear, and if immersed in water will mold to one’s wrist and will not crack.”

ProTek watches are manufactured in cleanroom conditions with focused attention paid to the manufacturing process, and they go through the standard quality-control processes that would be expected of a superior timepiece. There are about two dozen different tests to ensure the final product not only meets but exceeds the wearer’s expectations. Because Series 1000 and 2000 are dive watches and water resistance is of paramount importance, all watches undergo water-resistance testing in both air and water, unusual since most brands use only air for pressure testing.

The illumination process was also carefully thought out. “When we approached the Carbon Composite Case Dive series, a great deal of thought went into the lume colors available and which colors would best fill the needs of a dive watch,” Cohen says. “This resulted in a new configuration of lume colors to specifically aid diving. In diving, the only thing that counts is how much air remains in the tank, and this is measured in minutes and seconds, not hours. Very few ever dive long enough for hours to be a factor. Consequently, the series was conceived with green as its the brightest lume color to be used on the second hand, minute hand, and 12-hour index, along with the bezel pip used to time dives against the minute hand. This way, the key thing they need to see the most—the time of remaining air— glows in green. The only other lume color used for this series is a soothing, cool, ice-blue color. Of course, this also can be seen easily in darkness, but the green color is most prominent.”

Cohen also notes that ProTek goes through all the customary steps that any other watch company must go through to develop a watch for

sale on the open market. “We also implement other steps needed to incorporate use of tritium gas tubes that conventional watches do not deal with,” he says. “This work is done in a high-tech physicist’s laboratory in Switzerland,

Perfection is hard to attain, even with a great design. Cohen knows this, which is why he has assembled the right team. “Our team is small but mighty,” he says. “We have abundant watch knowledge, and our core group accounts for approximately 90 years of watch trade experience. We are not fly-by-night opportunists that just decided they can be in the watch business. We are watch trade veterans who know the ins and outs of this business.”

Cohen is justifiably proud of this new line. “Here’s the bottom line,” he says. “If you seek a well-made watch for an active lifestyle or for the work you do as a first responder, ProTek’s AllTerrain watches serve up excellence in timepieces that are ‘Rugged at Heart’ and visible in all light conditions, including no light at all.”

BRANCHING OUT

Founded in Mitchell, South Dakota, in 1981 as a one-man operation, Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks has grown into the world’s largest aftermarket gunstock manufacturer. It employs more than 100 craftsmen and women and now offers aftermarket gunstocks in over 255 different gun brands and over 1,200 models within those brands. Two years ago, long-time employees Dustin Knutson and Rob Carstensen became the new owners. While continuing to provide gun owners with their renowned laminated stocks, under Knutson and Carstensen the company has broadened the line to include the At-One Series of adjustable stocks as well as the Spike Camp, a lower-cost option that still provides the quality for which Boyds is known. SHOT Daily recently sat down with Knutson to discuss how and why Boyds continues to be a premier manufacturer of aftermarket gunstocks.

SHOT Daily: Synthetic stocks command a lot of attention these days, to the point that many rifle owners think wood is outdated. You, obviously, have a different view of this. What are the advantages of your product?

Dustin Knutson: There are some very good synthetic stocks out there. Some synthetic stocks can, and do, have unique traits that are pushing quality and performance in our industry. But most synthetic stocks are of poor quality and actually reduce the performance of the rifle. They are used, quite simply, because they are very inexpensive. Although they allow the manufacturer to meet a certain price point, quality and consistency suffer. Boyds gunstocks offer quality and a wide range of style, color, and material options in one performance-enhancing package.

SD: Please explain the process by which you assemble your laminate stocks.

DK: Laminate stocks are created by peeling a log into thin sheets of wood called veneer. These veneers are graded, removed of defects, and glued together using high-quality resins. A gunstock block of laminate contains 37 individual pieces of veneer—all glued, pressed together with huge industrial hydraulic presses, and dried to a specific level to ensure stability.

SD: How important is the ongoing evolution of adhesives and resins to your success?

DK: Just like any other product, the better the components and processes used to build the product, the better the outcome. Gunstocks are one small part of the adhesive industry. Those industries are constantly evolving and improving, and as a result we get access to the best adhesives.

Though best known for laminated wood gunstocks, Boyds is Branching Out into new territory under new ownership.

DAY 1, JANUARY 17, 2023 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS DAILY ❚ 59

SD: You say your laminated stocks are stronger and more durable than traditional wood stocks. How to you accomplish this?

DK: The process of laminating the veneers creates inherent strength and stability. A traditional wood block typically has one type of grain structure because it was cut from a solid tree, whereas a laminated block has thirty-seven veneers with all different types of grain structure. This is because they are not only from different parts of the tree, but likely to be from completely different trees.

When the veneers are laid into a block, the grain structure of one veneer opposes the grain structure of the other veneer. This creates a random “latticetype” structure of grain, which is exclusive to laminate, that stabilizes itself by having opposing grain orientation. Now, add high-quality adhesive and the veneer is locked onto itself. This is the reason laminate is strong and stable. If you look at the comparative strength and stability of modern laminated construction materials, like structural beams in buildings, you’ll find the strength and stability advantages are comparable.

SD: Adjustable stocks continue to gain traction, and your At-One line seems directly aimed at this market. How does this work?

DK: One of the most important aspects of good performance in shooting is to have consistency with the firearm. It is easy to achieve proper stock fit, and a properly fitting stock will improve your ability to aim the gun and absorb recoil more efficiently. Having an adjustable gunstock also helps to further consistency by taking out the variability of the shooter’s head and hand positioning. Being a big man (6 feet 6 inches tall), I always had to fit an “average-sized” stock, which translated to getting the dreaded “scope eye” more than once. During this time, I was marginally accurate with my rifles. Once I realized that I needed a stock with a longer length of pull and a little higher comb I was able to considerably improve my accuracy and precision with my rifles—and suffer fewer headaches caused by a recoiling scope slamming into my eyebrow.

So, we are huge proponents of stocks fitting the individual. Most of our stocks can be built with a specific length of pull. But finding the correct length of pull is partially art and partially science. Without getting into the field and testing what works best for a person, it can sometimes be difficult to know exactly the required length of pull a person needs. The adjustable At-One and Agility stocks allow for quick adjustment with just a push of a button. Now, when a person is at the range or in the field, they can experiment with the adjustments to find what works best for their comfort and accuracy. This adjustment also allows for different-sized shooters to successfully

share a firearm when at the range or in the field.

The At-One has the capability to use interchangeable grips and forend accessory panels to optimize a single stock for the widest range of use with simple hand tools. The push-button adjustable length of pull and comb height further improve those capabilities. The At-One can make any firearm a more versatile and effective tool. It also a unique shape, which helps differentiate your rifle from any other rifle.

SD: Spike Camp is a low-cost stock. Why did you feel it was important to add this to the line?

DK: We created the Spike Camp stock a few years after the At-One family of gunstocks. The featuredriven At-One is outstanding, but all that modularity may not be desired in some applications. So, we decided to make a stock at the opposite end of the spectrum. We made an essentials-only gunstock, something with minimal features but an all-around solid stock that is lighter and more compact and has simple lines. Our intention was to create a minimalistic stock with fit, form, and function. Ultimately, this resulted in a savings in material and time to produce the stock, so we were able to offer it at a lower price point. Less expensive does not have to mean cheap. The Spike Camp is really a “better for less” gunstock.

SD: A proper-fitting stock is key to achieving repeatable accuracy at the range or in the field. How does a custom Boyd stock help a customer achieve this?

DK: A good analogy here is to think back to when you shot a gun for the first time. Most of us were smaller or may not have had basic gun-handling skills. The guns were long and heavy, and we struggled to attain a good sight picture. As experienced

shooters, we are still influenced by the same factors, but to a lesser degree. We also tend to be influenced by the “it can’t be that big a difference” mindset. The reality is, a gun that fits better has better balance, will aim more consistently, and will reduce the effect of recoil on the shooter. All of that adds up to improved on-target results and more enjoyment when shooting. The fit and function advantages that we covered when discussing the At-One are available on almost every Boyds stock shape. The ability to select a stock profile that you prefer should not limit its effectiveness, and almost every Boyds stock can be manufactured to the individual customer’s optimal specs. It is really a simple concept; a gun that you are not struggling to aim, or one that allows you to maintain head and hand position, will always be easier to shoot.

SD: What was the thinking behind the Agility Performance Gunstock?

DK: The The original concept was to have a modernstyle hunting rifle. Basically, it is an updated version of the gunstock that millions of people used on their first rifle. We wanted a stock that had the necessary functions for comfort and accuracy, but with a more modern look. As you look at the shape you can see the traditional design of the stock, but we added some functional aspects, such as changing the grip angle slightly to accommodate different styles of shooting as well as incorporating some modern lines and flow to the stock. As the design progressed, we realized that the “hunting stock” turned into a group of performance-enhancing features. That's why we named it the Agility—because it is adaptable to the shooter as well as to their style of shooting.
