Re-entering society after experiencing the horrors of war can be a shattering experience. Family and friends, who were safely tucked away thousands of miles from the battlefield, can never fully understand what a veteran has endured.
One such veteran is Ryan Baudhuin. After a combat tour in Iraq as a Marine, Baudhuin found himself struggling to adjust. He was battling PTSD, mental health, substance abuse, loss, and grief.
His life was spiraling out of control, but in 2011 he was invited to the Horicon Marsh Veterans Hunt, an event hosted by a volunteer group dedicated to helping veterans.
He credits that hunt with saving his life, and he has used it to propel him into a career in the outdoor industry. And that includes giving fellow veterans a chance to hunt.
“Having been through the struggles myself and seeing what hunting and being outdoors can do for you, I want to give the gift of the outdoors as it was given to me,” he says.
Baudhuin now puts on his own events for veterans through his non-profit High Point Adventures, hunting everything from bear and ducks to exotic game in the pursuit of healing in the outdoors. He is now also a brand ambassador for Savage Arms.
“You get to these events, and you will see guys who are struggling. The event is not the hunt; that’s just the setting. The event is the camaraderie that develops between the veterans. The relationships and the interactions between the volunteers and guides add to the authenticity of it all. You feel a
sense of community. And you build a network here,” he says.
The Horicon Marsh Veterans Hunt has been held each year for more than a decade, relying on an ever-growing network of volunteers to deliver a first-rate experience. What started as a way to bring fewer than 10 veterans into the field has blossomed into an annual, wildly popular hunt with a waiting list to attend. Its popularity is only overshadowed by the difference it makes in first-time attendees and returning regulars every October. Last year’s hunt featured over 50 volunteers, dozens of sponsors, 55 volunteer guides, more than three dozen dogs and, most important, more than 80 veteran hunters.
“This event has saved lives,” said Andy Johnson, treasurer of the Horicon Marsh Veterans Hunt. “When this event first started, we really weren’t thinking about savings lives; we were just taking people out duck hunting. But it has turned into so much more. It’s gaining traction, and we’re getting people from all over who want to be involved. These are people who want to help—and help for
the right reasons. They want to help vets and try to give back some of what we feel is owed to them.”
“My first year was 2015,” said U.S. Marine Corps veteran Matt Owens. “I had never hunted ducks before. I instantly fell in love with it and couldn’t wait to come back. For 51 weeks a year I pretty much wait for this weekend. It’s all I can think about.”
“Using hunting and the outdoors as a healing tool for PTSD and mental health is just one tool in the toolbox that we can give these guys,” says Baudhuin. “I think the biggest thing they find out there is peace and tranquility as well as the camaraderie.”

Prior to joining Christensen Arms, she worked as head of marketing for several well-known companies such as BOTE, SilencerCo, the tactical business unit of Vista Outdoor, and, most recently, Rex Specs. In all, Vernon brings more than 13 years of industry expertise and experience spearheading successful marketing efforts targeted to the outdoor and firearms industries.
One of Vernon’s key tasks at Christensen Arms will be to lead the marketing team as it strives to introduce new audiences to the brand. At the same time, she and her team also intend to cultivate existing areas of strength by growing the overall presence and footprint of the firearms market. Her experience across multiple industries and product categories, as well as her knowledge in both B2B/ B2C channels, are invaluable assets as Christensen Arms seeks continued growth through innovative product development.

NSSF’s Government Relations-State Affairs team put some miles on their shoes in all 50 state capitals in 2022. There are significant gains for the firearm and ammunition industry to show for it, too.
Most state legislatures run early, run fast, and complete their work in the first few months of the year. Other state legislatures run throughout the year. That makes it a tall task for the NSSF State Affairs team.
Wyoming continued the state’s tradition of supporting and defending the firearm industry and Second Amendment rights. Republican Gov. Mark Gordon signed the NSSF-supported Second Amendment Protection Act, which prohibits state and local law enforcement from being conscripted to implement federal executive actions of questionable legality with regard to bans of firearms, firearms accessories, magazines, or ammunition. The bill contains harsh criminal penalties (up to a year in jail) if ignored.
In Virginia, NSSF made progress to expand hunter access by opening more hunting opportunities for Sunday hunters. Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed the NSSF-supported pro-hunting Senate Bill 8 into law. The new law repealed Virginia’s blue laws relating to Sunday hunting on public land and opened nearly 2 million acres of public land for Sunday hunting. Since 2014, Sunday hunting has been legal on private land in Virginia. Now, hunters won’t be restricted to private land hunting only on Sundays.
Hunters in Colorado got a boost, too. Democratic Gov. Jared Polis signed HB22-1168 into law in a bipartisan signing ceremony. It allows hunter education to be taught in schools across the state. NSSF was recognized by the legislators for our work supporting and bringing sponsors together for the bill. The law creates a statewide curriculum for teaching hunter education classes to seventh graders and above, as an elective course. The courses will be taught by a certified instructor and would meet state instruction requirements.
Georgia hunters also benefited from NSSF efforts this year. Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed HB 1349 into law protecting the state’s vast public hunting lands. Specifically, HB 1349 addresses the state’s current “No-Net-Loss” statute, updating the year, which will result in an additional 200,000 acres of protected public hunting land. “No-Net-Loss” refers to the numbers of baseline acres available for hunting and that no
fewer acres shall be available for hunting in the future.
NSSF gave Iowa youth hunters cause to celebrate in 2022. NSSF joined Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds for the official signing of Senate File 2334. This law expands turkey hunting opportunities in Iowa by requiring the DNR to allow the use of .410 bore and 28-gauge shotguns for turkey hunting. It expands the allowable shot size to “shot not smaller than shot size number 10.” When this bill was first introduced, it would have only allowed for the use of .410s with no shot-size adjustment. NSSF worked with the legislature through the process, and the result is a commonsense measure and victory for Iowa hunters. This bill passed with unanimous and bipartisan support.
Vermont joined the list of states allowing the use of suppressors for hunting, an ongoing effort by NSSF’s State Affairs team. Republican Gov. Phil Scott signed S. 281, a law that legalizes suppressor hunting, after it cleared both state legislative chambers. The bipartisan bill, originally relating to hunting coyotes with dogs, was amended to tweak state suppressor laws with the approval of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.
Several state governors signed laws for Constitutional Carry or “permitless carry” of concealed firearms by law-abiding gun owners in their
respective states. These efforts were supported by NSSF. This pushed the total to 25 states that no longer require law-abiding gun owners to obtain a state-issued concealed carry permit to carry a concealed firearm. Alabama’s Republican Gov. Kay Ivey, Ohio’s Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, Indiana’s Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb, and Georgia’s Republican Gov. Brian Kemp all signed laws recognizing that law-abiding gun owners in their state no longer need to obtain concealed carry permits to exercise their Second Amendment right to carry a firearm outside the home, a right confirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Bruen decision.
South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem delivered on her promise to do away with her state’s fees on concealed carry licenses by signing SB 212 that reduces the cost of South Dakota’s concealed carry permit laws to zero. South Dakota doesn’t require permits to carry concealed firearms but offers permits for reciprocity reasons.
Those are just the highlights. This summary doesn’t include the countless bills introduced annually that NSSF works to defeat that would harm the firearm industry. New legislative sessions are already opening for 2023 and NSSF is back at it, representing the firearm industry in every statehouse in the country.

Over the past two decades, HEVI-Shot has become an industry leader in performance shotshell production, so much so that the name is synonymous with high-performance, non-lead projectiles. In 2000, HEVI-Shot started production with the goal of making waterfowl ammo that outperformed steel. To do this, they spent more than a year developing their own alloy mixture using tungsten and other metals. The result was a very heavy pellet far superior to steel. Given its density, it also outperformed lead. These “Heavier Than Lead” pellets are now known as HEVI-Shot’s own recipe of 12 g/cc tungsten pellets. Sometime along the way, HEVI-Shot also started crafting its own bismuth pellets.
As a small company, HEVI-Shot had to rely on outside vendors for components and some manufacturing help. For more than two decades, it did quite well for itself, yet still had challenges caused by this reliance on outside vendors. That changed two years ago when the ammunition powerhouse, Vista Outdoor, purchased HEVI-Shot. This is the same company that owns Federal, Speer/CCI, and Remington Ammunition. Literally overnight, HEVI-Shot had access to quality resources and deep
pockets. HEVI-Shot is still located in its original facility in Sweet Home, Oregon, and it operates independently of Vista Outdoor’s other ammo companies. But with access to the expanded resources, courtesy of Vista Outdoor, it is now in a much stronger competitive position.
Over 22 years, the list of products in HEVI-Shot’s catalog got long and complicated, containing many unique product names for each category of specific products. Admittingly, the company knew its catalog of products could make its customers dizzy, and in 2022 it set about reevaluating its catalog, discontinuing many of its convoluted product names and streamlining the product line. Today, HEVI-Shot has approximately 110 specific loadings organized into 13 different product families: six for waterfowl, three for upland, three for turkey, and one for predator.
The key to understanding HEVI-Shot’s product line is grasping the overall strategy of pellet materials and stacked payloads. HEVI-Shot only loads nontoxic pellet materials: steel, bismuth, or tungsten. Of these three shot materials, steel has the lightest density (7.8 g/cc). Bismuth is next (9.6 g/cc), and tungsten is the heaviest (12 g/cc).

By offering so many nontoxic ammo options for shotgunners, HEVI-Shot is often misunderstood.
HEVI-Shot also loads a full line of turkey-hunting ammo using ultra-dense tungsten super shot (TSS) pellets that have a density of 18 g/cc. Although HEVI-Shot is justifiably proud of its 12-g/cc tungsten, it decided to listen to its customers by offering turkey loads using sourced TSS.
“The reason has to do with elementary physics,” says Scott Turner, HEVI-Shot and Federal Ammunition shotshell product line manager. “A denser (heavier) material will carry its velocity and penetration energy longer. This means it will hit harder (faster) as well as carrying its lethality (in foot-pounds) out to greater distances, a decided advantage for turkey hunters.”
Density also affects shot size. A one centimeter cube of steel weighs a lot less than a one centimeter cube of bismuth or tungsten. Because bismuth is 22 percent denser than steel, hunters can choose loads that are one size smaller than steel, yet still have the same or better lethality. Using tungsten, hunters can choose three sizes smaller.
According to Turner, a smaller-sized projectible penetrates deeper, enhancing overall lethality. “In other words, No. 9 shot creates a deeper wound channel than the much larger No. 2 shot,” he says. “The size of shot also affects pellet count. You can fit a lot more No. 9s than No. 2s in a three-inch shotgun hull. So, broken down to basics, if you choose a shotshell that features a material that is denser than another, you will benefit by having more downrange energy, deeper penetration, and/or higher pellet counts, which leads to fuller patterns with more hits on target at longer distances.”

Beyond that, HEVI-Shot shells are loaded with either straight or stacked payloads. A straight payload means the shell contains only one material. A stacked shell contains multiple shot types in one shell. For HEVI-Shot, that means a layer of steel pellets and a layer of bismuth pellets loaded in the same shell. This stacked, dual-shot design improves a shotgun shell’s performance.
To sum up, HEVI-Shot’s three shot materials and two payload types all have a specific purpose in its product line: Steel satisfies customers looking for a less-expensive option that is effective at close and medium distances. A load that has both steel and bismuth is a better solution because a stacked load offers an increase in overall lethal effectiveness, but adds only a modest price increase. Bismuth is slightly more expensive than steel, but its performance is closer to that of lead loads, so a load with 100-percent bismuth is an even better solution. The HEVI-Bismuth line is also safe to shoot through any lead- or steel-rated shotgun due to the malleability of the material. Though more expensive than steel or bismuth, tungsten is by far the most effective of the three at distant targets.
“The sum of the product’s overall quality can only be determined by the quality of each individual part,” Turner says. “For shotshells, that means the hull, primer, powder, wads, shot, and sealants. What sets HEVI-Shot shotshells apart from the competition is all-season reliability and specialized components. HEVI-Shot uses only high-quality hulls and brass head manufacturing materials. The dust is mostly settled after the midterm elections. As of this writing, the Georgia Senate runoffs were still undecided, but prognosticators are already arguing about what happened and what it means.
The firearm industry employed a robust #GUNVOTE campaign to ensure voters who care about the Second Amendment were registered to vote, informed, engaged, and turned out at the ballot box. Millions of law-abiding Americans cast their #GUNVOTE.
The single most significant federal outcome from November 8 was Second Amendment-friendly Republicans winning the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. With at least 220 seats, Republicans will control the levers of power over the several congressional committees to determine what legislation will be considered for hearings, what bills will receive votes, and what Congressional investigations will be conducted.
Republicans chose Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as their nominee for Speaker of the House and current Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced she would not seek a leadership position. After years of Democratic attacks and gun control grandstanding against the firearm industry, a Republican majority will emphasize the importance of lawful gun ownership and of protecting the Second Amendment.
A major victory came in Nevada where Republican challenger and former Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo unseated incumbent Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak, flipping the governor’s mansion red. During his short tenure, Gov. Sisolak signed into law several gun control restrictions, including mandatory firearm storage, implementing “red flag” laws that deny due process rights to the accused, banning certain firearm accessories, and implementing universal background checks on private firearms within the state, among many others. Most importantly,
Sheriff Lombardo will provide a needed check against the state legislature in 2023, where both chambers will be controlled by gun-control-friendly Democrats.
Voters in the Hawkeye State overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative, the Freedom Amendment, to add Second Amendment protections to the state’s constitution. Iowa was one of just six states that lacked constitutional guarantees to protect against state-level gun control efforts but now only five remain: California, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York.
The outcome of the Georgia senate runoff election on December 6 means the Democrats will retain control of the Senate. With the election of Sen. Warnock, Democrats have now gained a one-seat majority in the U.S. Senate. This is because Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D-PA) defeated Dr. Mehmet Oz, flipping the Pennsylvania open seat of retiring Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) and the Democrats held off challenges in Nevada, Arizona, New Hampshire, and Colorado. Even if Herschel Walker had won the runoff, creating an evenly divided Senate, Vice President Kamala Harris would still hold the tiebreaking vote and Sen. Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) remains in power. Gun control in the Senate is unlikely to garner the required 60 votes to overcome a filibuster despite President Joe Biden’s continued push for another federal ban on so-called “assault weapons.”
While the Nevada governor’s mansion flipped red, Democrats were victorious in Arizona, Maryland, and Massachusetts. Republican Governors. Doug Ducey (R-AZ) and Larry Hogan (R-MD) were term-limited and Charlie Baker (R-MA) declined to run for a third term. Pro-Second Amendment Republicans hold majorities in both legislative bodies in Arizona, and Democrats control both bodies in Maryland and Massachusetts.
Oregon voters narrowly approved Ballot Measure 114 that will enact several gun control measures that will “virtually eliminate the firearm industry.” Ballot Measure 114 expands background check requirements to all firearm transfers, including private transfers, and requires gun owners to pay extra fees, enroll in hands-on firearm training, and submit fingerprinting, photographs, and other data for collection. It requires Oregonians to obtain a permit to purchase a gun even before they can pass an FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) verification and limits ammunition magazine capacity to 10 rounds. Ballot Measure 114 faces several legal challenges, including from NSSF. Numerous Oregon sheriffs have openly declared they will not enforce it, and the lead up to enactment of the new restrictions have spurred skyrocketing firearm sales in Oregon.
Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Witmer won reelection and will now enjoy a Democratic majority in both legislative chambers. It marks the first time in nearly 40 years Democrats will control the state Senate and House, and Michigan will be one of 18 Democratic trifectas in the country. Gov. Witmer is a gun control proponent and will now have legislature support to pass gun control bills unchecked.

NSSF yesterday presented its highest honor—the Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award—to Dave Baron, former owner and CEO of Baron Technology, a Connecticut-based firm known throughout the firearm industry for its quality engraving and finishing services. The award was presented at NSSF’s annual Members Meeting.
The NSSF Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves by their long-term commitment to the success of the industry and by their support of NSSF’s mission to promote, protect, and preserve hunting and the shooting sports.
Throughout his career, Baron has given back to his industry and the people—youth and adults—
who use its products responsibly for enjoyment in recreational shooting and hunting. His dedication to supporting youth programs monetarily and with his own time connects with his passion for conservation and doing his part to help the shooting sports endure.
After six years with the U.S. Marines, Baron joined the family business in 1982, the year it was founded by his father, Frank. Baron has spent his entire career there, rising to president, CEO, and owner. The company, which grew rapidly, made its mark engraving and detailing countless collectible firearms and other products— many of them used in fundraiser auctions to benefit worthy causes.
Baron’s particular interest has been to support youth participation in the
shooting sports as well as children who struggle with illness and disease. He has been a board member and president of the Kids and Clays Foundation, which supports Ronald McDonald House through fundraising clay shoots around the country. He currently serves on the boards of the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance, 4-H Shooting Sports Foundation, and the National Wild Turkey Foundation.
His life of service and generosity has brought him other accolades, including twice being named SHOT Business Person of the Year, earning the NRA Personal Achievement Award, and being named to Outdoor Life’s “25 People Who Have Changed the Face of Shooting and Hunting.”
Baron has long supported the NSSF and its Project ChildSafe firearm safety program, the NRA Foundation, and Friends of NRA. He was a founding member of
Youth Shooting Sports Association, which was organized to deliver firearms, ammunition, targets, and supplies to youth shooting programs across the nation.
“Dave Baron is a kind, generous person who has always looked for opportunities to lend support in the shooting sports community and outside of it to help those in need,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO. “His example of giving back inspires us all.”
“My passion has always been with developing the next generation,” said Baron. “They need to love shooting and conservation just like we do. The future of all we hold dear depends on our best efforts now!”
The award’s namesake, Ken Sedlecky, had a long career at Smith & Wesson, was inducted into the National Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame, and was known for mentoring new youth and adult target shooters.

NSSF, The Trade Association of the Firearm Industry, honored three inductees to its Hall of Fame at the 2023 SHOT Show, recognizing them for their leadership that spanned decades and their contributions to the growth of the industry and expanding the shooting sports. Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO, praised the three men in remarks made yesterday at the NSSF Members Meeting at the SHOT Show. SHOT Show is the largest trade show of hunting, shooting, law enforcement, and outdoor-related products in the world.
“Pausing at the SHOT Show to recognize our past leaders and their accomplishments reminds us that their efforts and involvement have benefitted our industry in so many ways. They have contributed to our heritage through the companies they ran, the products they helped create, and their unique individual talents. For that and so much more, they deserve this honor and our praise,” said Bartozzi.

The 2023 inductees to the NSSF Hall of Fame are Bob Behn, Richard Lipsey, and Bill Ruger, Sr.
Robert W. Behn joined the Marlin Firearms Company in 1969, eventually rising through the ranks to serve as the company’s President from 1997-2007 and then CEO until his retirement in 2008. After retiring from Marlin, Behn became a senior advisor to the executive chairman of Remington Arms while also serving as a director of Remington’s board. He is a past vice chairman of NSSF’s Board of Governors as well as a past board member of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI). Behn is a recipient of NSSF’s Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award.
Richard Lipsey is the founder of powerhouse wholesaler and distributor Lipsey’s. His career in the sporting goods industry has spanned nearly 60 years, during which he built Lipsey’s into one of the largest distributors in the country. A dedicated conservationist, particularly in the area of wetlands, coastal, and waterfowl conservation across North America and in his home state of Louisiana, Lipsey is renowned for his philanthropy on the local, state, and federal levels. A staunch supporter of NSSF and its wide-ranging efforts over the years, Lipsey is a recipient of
William B. Ruger, Sr. was the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Sturm, Ruger & Company. Widely recognized as one of America’s greatest gun designers, Bill led the company to becoming the largest firearm manufacturer in the United States. He had a hand in the original design and timehonored styling of every firearm his company produced, and he continued to work on new creations up until his death in 2002. His first firearm introduction in 1949, a stylish .22 caliber target pistol, was considered “the first gun” of many Americans and is still
one of the most popular target pistols in widespread use. Beyond his extraordinary accomplishments in the firearm field, Bill was a charter founder of NSSF and a tremendous supporter of the foundation’s efforts.
“The NSSF Hall of Fame reminds everyone of the pride we take in our industry and what our leaders then and now stand up for—the freedom to make, own, and use firearms responsibly in America,” said Bartozzi.
This prestigious group of 2023 NSSF Hall of Fame inductees joins the ranks of past honorees, whose biographies can be found on NSSF’s Hall of Fame website (nssf.org/about-us/halloffame). NSSF unveiled the Hall of Fame concept and inducted the inaugural class of six at the 2020 SHOT Show. No Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place in 2021 when SHOT Show was conducted virtually due to the pandemic. Six were inducted last year—three each for 2021 and 2022.

Caron Engineering, which participated in the Supplier Showcase earlier this week, announced an upgrade to its ToolConnect system. ToolConnect is a process control system that automatically transfers tool measurement data generated by a tool presetter and sends it directly to the CNC control. This system was designed for tools with RFID tags embedded in tool holders as the primary data carriers. Now, ToolConnect can also transfer tool measurement data via 2D (presetter) printed barcode tags.
The ToolConnect barcode application uses a barcode scanner at the machine tool to scan the presetter generated barcode. ToolConnect reads and processes the barcode data, displays all tool and process information and then automatically updates the offsets to the correct fields in the control. No operator data entry is required.

“The Supplier Showcase is a valuable venue for us,” said Methods sales rep Jason Gray. “It gives us the opportunity to meet new customers in the firearms manufacturing community.”
The Governors’ Forum, hosted by NSSF’s Lawrence G. Keane, Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs and General Counsel, took place Wednesday afternoon at the 2023 SHOT Show. “This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from governors of the importance of the firearm industry and issues important to them,” said Keene in his introductory remarks. “Last year’s forum was so successful that we wanted to create another event to welcome these governors to speak directly with show attendees and industry media. NSSF has regularly welcomed governors, but this is a truly special chance to gather these governors in one space to speak about the importance of a growing and vibrant firearm industry to their states.”
In all, seven governors participated. In alphabetical order (of the states they represent) the panel consisted of Idaho Governor Brad Little, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte,
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, and Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon.
The wide-ranging discussion, moderated by Keane, covered such key topics as fostering a pro-business climate for firearm manufacturers, protecting the Second Amendment, and fighting back against ESG (environmental, social, and government) investment activism that not only harms the firearm industry, but also millions of Americans who exercise their constitutional right to responsibly use firearms. Each of the seven governors also emphasized that their administrations intend to pursue policies that will make their respective states pro-business magnets where members of the firearm industry will not face onerous regulation, unfavorable tax codes, or other legislation that will unduly restrict their ability to prosper.
Gov. Gordon drew applause with his answer to the question, “What is your secret sauce that allows you to successfully attract members of the
firearm industry to your state?” He said, “We care about the Second Amendment, and we care about the firearm industry. Wyoming will stand at your side.”
Newly elected Nevada Governor Lombardo re-affirmed
his support for the SHOT Show and said he is committed to seeing that Las Vegas remains a welcoming venue for the firearm industry. “There is a new sheriff in town, and as a former sheriff I can say that.”
Firearms manufacturers located in a state that no longer welcomes such businesses should take a close look at Georgia. According to Bert Brantley, Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor Brian Kemp, Georgia is home to highly skilled machinists, offers excellent infrastructure, and its population of hunting enthusiasts makes it the ideal location for firearms manufacturers. With great manufacturers and suppliers like Taurus and Check-Mate located in southwest Georgia, Daniel Defense on the coast, and over 70 small- and medium-size enterprises scattered throughout the state making hunting rifles, shotguns, pistols, semi-automatic militarystyle rifles, parts, accessories and ammunition, the industry is responsible for over 4,630 jobs in 2020, according to data from the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
“The state’s business recruiters began aggressively courting gunmakers six years ago after noticing a trend,” says Brantley. “Firearms manufacturers were fleeing the northeast, where some states have
passed more stringent gun laws, and are relocating to politically friendlier southern climates. These recruiting efforts are now paying off.”
In November 2021, Remington Firearms announced that its global headquarters, a new advanced manufacturing facility, and a research and development center would locate in LaGrange, and in September 2022, Beretta Holding S.A., through its subsidiary Norma Precision Inc., announced plans to expand its footprint in Georgia and build a new manufacturing, assembly, and distribution facility in Bryan County. The $60 million project will create 600 new jobs for which the company is currently hiring. Norma Precision will continue to develop and produce high-end ammunition to serve key markets in the hunting, sporting goods, optics, military, and law enforcement sectors.
“Georgia’s workforce of 5.3 million people represents all levels of experience, education, and diversity,” Brantley says. “More than 50,000 resi-
dents already work in fabricated metals and plastics manufacturing. In addition, Georgia is a rightto-work state with low union membership, resulting in lower business operating costs. The state also offers companies a competitive and friendly tax and regulatory environment.”
Governor Kemp has been a steadfast defender and supporter of the Second Amendment and is one of America’s most pro-gun governors. Recent pro-gun legislation signed by the governor includes House Bill 362 legalizing the new CVA .40 caliber muzzleloader for deer hunting, and last fall, he signed a proclamation establishing September 24 as Hunting and Fishing Day in Georgia to acknowledge the important conservation work that continues to be done because of the contributions of hunters and anglers.

A bewildering array of choices can cause sensory overload. The job of the retailer is to narrow down those choices to a manageable handful.
Your customer just chose an AR rifle, and if it is like most ARs sold today, it is optic-ready. That doesn’t mean the AR is equipped with an optic, only that it can accommodate an optic. The best way to help them choose an appropriate optic is to ask them what they intend to use the AR for— self-defense, hunting, or competition. The answer will help you better narrow down the type of optic that would serve them best: dot-style (reflex) sights, prism sight/scopes, variable-power riflescopes, or digital hybrids. All of these AR optics have pros and cons, so let’s look at which is best suited for your customer.
The AR rifle was designed to be fired using iron sights. The fixed A2-style front sight, which was originally standard equipment on military-issued M16 rifles circa the early 1960s, still has a following today. While the AR carry handle, which housed the rear sight, was original equipment, modern ARs have evolved to a flat-top receiver equipped with a Picatinny rail. This modern upper receiver is by far the most popular choice with users because it offers the ability to easily mount a variety of optic types.
That said, there are advantages to iron sights. If the optic is damaged, iron sights offer a backup, which can mean the difference between aiming an AR versus pointing an AR when the optic goes sideways. Back Up Iron Sights (BUIS) are designed to fold flat and flip-up when the optic goes down. The drawback of iron sights used in conjunction with optics is that iron sights tend to block some of the field of view. At close range that is really not a problem, but at distance, the user will find that the sight picture becomes cluttered.
Reflex sights, also known as dot sights or red dots, use a dot reticle that the user places on the target to take the shot. Dot-style reflex sights have an edge in close-quarter situations because the dot is easy to
focus on. Reflex sights also offer fast target acquisition and are best suited for defense work. Depending on the type of hunting the customer may do, say hunting pigs from a blind at under 75 yards, a dot sight excels. Reflex sights have no magnification, but offer unlimited eye relief; in many respects they are similar to iron sights but are far easier to use because you only focus on the dot—you don’t have to align a rear and front sight. Most quality reflex sights are also parallex-free and offer consistent sighting. Better reflex sights offer automatic dot brightness adjustment, depending on the lighting in the environment. In my opinion, this allows the user to focus on the target instead of fussing with the sight.
Reflex sights are compact, lightweight, and have a small footprint, so they don’t add extra weight or bulk to the rifle. They are powered by readily available batteries that can be bought at convenience stores or gas stations. Premium reflex sights have features built in to conserve battery life. Some models turn off after inactivity and turn immediately on when picked up. I have had sights that sip battery juice and last for years.
Reflex sights pair well with backup iron sights; the iron sights co-witness with the dot, so you are always ready even if your dot sight batteries are DOA.
Dot reticles come in a variety of sizes and colors. We tend to call all dot-style sights
red-dot sights because these sights were originally designed with a red dot. Today there are green-dot reticles as well as some that are blue. I suggest you have your customer view different color dot sights side by side. (Note: in this instance you need to ask if the customer is color blind.) Let them choose the color that best works with their eyes. Dot sizes typically are 2 MOA, 3.5 MOA, and 4 MOA. Small reticles are easier to use at farther distances, large dots tend to obscure the target at farther distances. At close range large dots offer fast target acquisition. Some reflex sights offer BDC-style reticles with holdover points for long-range shooting.
Most reflex sights come with a Picatinny mount, so installation is fast and easy.
Reflex sights tend to be the least expensive option for an AR optic. Premium-brand dot sights include the Aimpoint ACPRO P-1 or Duty RDS (Booth #13007) , Trijicon MRO HD (Booth #10735) , and EOTECH 5x Series (Booth #20049) . These sights are street- and battle-tested. A good mid-range reflex sight is the Holosun AEMS (Booth #13420) . Affordable red dots include Crimson Trace HRO (Booth #12805) or Bushnell TRS-125 (Booth #11838)
Think of a prism riflescope as a step between a dot-style reflex sight and a variable-power riflescope. Prism riflescopes combine a dot-style reticle of a reflex sight with the magnification of a variable-power riflescope.
Traditional riflescopes use a series of lenses to focus on a target. A prism scope uses a glass prism to focus on the target. Prism scopes are more compact than a traditional scope yet have many of the same features such as magnification, an illuminated etched reticle, and a focusing eyepiece.
Compared to a reflex sight, a prism scope is heavier and less compact.
In my opinion, premium prism scopes have one advantage over reflex sights. They are battery free and are powered by a fiber optic that juices a tritium reticle and automatically adjusts the brightness of the reticle depending on available light.
The magnification on a prism scope is fixed and ranges from 1.5X up to 5.5X. For mediumrange distances a 3X, 3.5X, or 4X power magnification is the sweet spot.
Many prism scopes are rugged and made for hard use. In fact, the first rifle combat optic adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps was the Trijicon ACOG 4x32 prism scope. They are well suited for defense work as well as mediumrange hunting and competition.
Reticle colors for prism scopes typically are red, green, or amber. The reticle type on a
prism scope can be a dot, chevron, crosshair, horseshoe dot, or triangle.
Prism scopes can also be used with iron sights, as most units will co-witness with iron sights. Nearly all prism scopes attach to a Picatinny rail, so mounting one to an AR is a snap.
Premium prism scopes for AR rifles are not inexpensive, though there are quality brands that won’t cost more than the AR.
Trijicon is the Cadillac of prism scopes, and any of its ACOG models will go to hell and back and still keep ticking. A more affordable alternative is the Primary Arms SLx 1X MicroPrism with the Cyclops Gen2 reticle (Booth #70455) .
Variable-power riflescopes are as home on an AR as they are on a bolt-action rifle. These scopes offer zoom magnification, a variety of reticle types, the ability to judge distance, and more.
These scopes use exposed or covered turrets to adjust the reticle. Typically, tactical-style scopes have exposed turrets so the user can quickly adjust the zero to a specific distance. Covered turrets are typically used by hunters who zero the scope for a specific distance and never touch them again.
Depending on the magnification zoom, variable-power scopes are well suited for close- to long-range shooting. If you want a variable scope to act like a red dot for close range yet have the ability to hit targets at distance, a 1-3X power scope is the best option. I suggest a scope with an illuminated reticle and a large diameter tube so you will have a wider field of view and fast target acquisition. Nearly all 3-Gun competitors use a 1-3X power scope, dialing it down for close target and cranking up the magnification for targets farther away.
Many variable-power scope brands also offer reticles calibrated to the caliber of your AR. This way, if you shoot 5.56, 6.8 SPC, 300 BLK, or any other caliber, there is no guess work as the distance between subtensions is calibrated for specific distances.
If the intent is long-range shooting, then a scope with a higher magnification range is the option. The higher the magnification range, the better you can see your target; the drawback here is that as you zoom in on the target, you decrease the field of view. Zoom in too much and take a shot, you might have a hard time getting back on target after recoil, so decrease the magnification.
Another consideration when selecting a variable-power riflescope: first focal plane (FFP) or
second focal plane (SFP). A FFP scope reticle changes in size with adjustments in magnification, so subtensions remains constant. This means holdover and ranging can be used throughout the full magnification range of the scope. FFP scopes are well suited for precision rifle shooting and long-range hunting. SFP scopes are the most common, and nearly every hunting rifle is equipped with this reticle. An SFP reticle maintains its size during changes in the magnification. Something to note with an SFP scope is the ranging or trajectorycompensation systems can only be used at a specific magnification setting.
Reticle types for a mid- to high-magnification scope are typically a MRAD or MOA design that allow the user to judge distance to a target. The reticle works in synch with the turret clicks so zeroing the scope is easy, repeatable, and consistent. Reticles choices range from the simple to the complicated. Choose a simple reticle like a duplex crosshair for hunting or a mil-dot if you want to judge distances. More complicated reticles look like a sheet of graph paper, but once you understand how they work you will find you can compensate for wind and adjust for distance almost instantly.
Variable-power scopes are heavier and require rings or an AR-specific mount for attachment. Fixed iron sights or BUIS do not work with variable-power scopes. In this case, the AR needs to be free of iron sights. For a premium low-range variable-power scopes consider
the Swarovski Z6i 1-6x24. Moderate-priced scopes include the Bushnell AR Optics 1-8x24, Primary Arms SLx 1-5x24 FFP scope, or Konus Konuspro M30 1-4x24 (Booth #41348) . Need a long-range scope? Premium options include the Nightforce ATACR 7-35x56 (Booth #10546) and Steiner T6Xi 5-30x56 (Booth #13031) Options that are easier on the wallet include the Primary Arms GLx 4-16x50 FFP, Leupold Mark 3HD 6-18x50 P5 (Booth #12421) , or Burris AR Riflescope 4.5-14x42 (Booth #13031)
These scopes have night vision or thermal sights built into the scope as well as mini computers to record video as well as help calculate trajectory to the target.
Night vision or thermal scopes are a musthave for night hunting for feral pigs or predators. These scopes can also be used in daylight. Typically, thermal and night sights are expensive. Other hybrid AR optics include pairing a reflex sight with a flip-to-side magnifier for long-range shooting. Another option is to offset-mount a small dot sight on a variable-power scope. Use the scope for a medium- to long-range shot and tilt the rifle to use the dot sight at close range. Some sights can also be paired with night vision. High-end thermal riflescopes include the Burris Thermal Riflescope and Pulsar Thermion 2 XQ50 (Booth #11419). For affordable thermal scope options, try the Sightmark Wraith HD 4-32x50 (Booth #11419).
What happens when you focus on building better-quality guns with features customers really want? If you are Taurus, you win awards and your dealers are able to sell a lot of guns—especially to firsttime gun buyers. But there’s more to the story. “We acknowledged our quality issues,” says Cody Osborn, marketing director for Taurus Holdings, Inc. “In the past we had some issues. Taurus management acknowledged it, and turned it around with better-quality guns.”
The industry has seen a change for the better, ranging from the the Raging Hunter introduced in 2019 to the fun-to-shoot TX22 rimfire pistol that debuted in 2020. Last year Taurus jumped into the micro-compact 9mm market with a real contender, the GX4. All three of these pistols gained accolades. In 2019, the Raging Hunter received the NRA’s Golden Bullseye award for “Hunting Handgun of the Year,” and the TX22 was Guns and Ammo’s “Handgun of the Year.” In 2021, the GX4 won two Caliber Awards from the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW), earning the “Best New Handgun” and the “Best Overall New Product.”
Both Osborn and Caleb Giddings, brand marketing manager of Taurus, are competitive shooters. In fact, says Giddings, “Most employees are shooters, which means there were certain features in the pistols we shooters needed and expect to have.”
Having shooters as employees helped to amp up the features in Taurus’ newer guns. The trigger
in the GX4 is just one example. When I first tested the GX4 and tried the trigger my thought was: This is a Taurus? The trigger in the GX4 is one of the most crisp and consistent striker-fired triggers in a micro compact. The trigger has a flat face for simple finger indexing, just like what you might see on many custom aftermarket triggers. In addition, the GX4 features interchangeable backstraps to custom fit the pistol to nearly every hand size.
Taurus also produces variants with a factory optic cut. The T.O.R.O. (Taurus Optic Ready Option) is another feature new and experienced shooters are looking for in a pistol. Large, easy-touse sights are another user-friendly feature. No longer are the sights a three-white-dot style that’s as dated as a 1980s mullet haircut; instead, the sights have serrated faces and a white-dot front sight for fast target acquisition. Clearly, Taurus listened to shooters and focused on what they want in a gun and how that gun fits into their lifestyle, be it weekend plinking or concealed carry.
The trigger in the TX22 is another great example of a crisp, consistent trigger that does not require shooters to wrestle with it. Although some question the overall look of the gun, there is no question it is fun to shoot.
Some .22 LR pistols are notorious for jamming. Not the TX22. “It runs on any ammo you put in it,” says Giddings.
Old reputations can be hard to shed, and though Taurus has had a lifetime repair policy since Pac-Man was the most popular video game, reliability has increased to the point where the need for guns to go back to the factory has significantly decreased. The new manufacturing facility in the U.S. is a big reason for the overall improvement in the functional reliability of Taurus guns.

Taurus is now reaping the benefits of its investment in quality. These pistols are a sweet spot with dealers and buyers. The G3 has been one of the best-selling pistols in the U.S. With a street price under $300 (in some cases closer to $250) many new-gun buyers are comfortable with the price. For nearly 30 years, EOTECH has produced highgrade optics for the law-enforcement community, special-operations professionals, and civilian consumers. Best known for its Holographic Weapon Sights (HWS), in 2016 EOTECH expanded its optics line by introducing the Vudu line of premium magnified optics. The manufacturer also has a footprint in night vison and thermal imaging products and recently branched out into LED pistol-sight optics.
SHOT Daily sat down with John Bailey, EOTECH's vice president of marketing and product development, to discuss the company's unrelenting focus on product quality rather than quantity. As the company likes to say, “When there are zero margins for error, compromise is not an option.”
SHOT Daily: EOTECH is the world-leading holographic weapons-sight manufacturer. How did it get to such a pinnacle?
John Bailey: It’s really an interesting story where everything seemed to happen at the right time. Holography has been around for decades, but it
took a handful of brilliant individuals and technology working together to advance holography as a firearm optic. The first prototypes were the size of a sewing machine. Unwieldy yes, but it confirmed the concept. At around the same time that laser diodes got smaller and we were able to miniaturize the overall system, the AR-style rifle transformed from a fixed carry-handle type to flat-top models that better accepted an optic such as ours.
At that time, EOTECH wasn’t a brand and had no identity, so we licensed the product to Bushnell as the HOLOsight. With Bushnell’s help, we achieved commercial recognition and the attention of USSOCOM [United States Special Operations Command]. We eventually became the standard CQB optic for all U.S. Special Forces, DEA, FBI, and military groups around the world. This credibility, along with the expiration of the assault weapons ban in 2004, quickly grew EOTECH into an optics powerhouse.
SD: EOTECH has long touted the benefits of its Holographic Weapons Systems (HWS) technology over standard red-dot sights, which utilize a LED light source and reflex sight. Just what are the benefits of HWS technology? How does it achieve this?
EOTECH’s unrelenting focus on

JB: The EOTECH HWS is often lumped into the category of red dots. It is true that it does have a red dot, but the differences between red-dot technology and holographic technology are many.
Red-dot sights are simple in design. They consist of an LED light positioned at the rear of the sight that is aimed at the front lens. The lens has filters that bounce or reflect the red light back to the user in the form of a dot. One limitation is that the dot needs to be big enough for the user to find quickly and align with the target, but small enough so that it doesn’t obscure the target and reduce accuracy. Holography overcomes this compromise. EOTECH can incorporate any reticle design to include things such as stadia lines, ballis-
tic holds, and range estimation. The most common reticle, known at times as the doughnut of death, is a 68 MOA ring with an 1 MOA aiming dot. Because the HWS is powered by a laser diode and not an LED, the aiming dot is a true point source and offers the smallest dot in the industry. Here, you have a large reference ring to get you on target quickly, but a very precise aiming dot to provide accuracy.
A major limitation for red dots is that the dot is at a different focal plane than the target. This causes the user to shift their focus slightly to focus on the dot and then shift back to the target. An HWS reticle is focused at the target plane so you don’t have to shift your focus. You maintain your target focus and see your reticle clearly.
Another advantage the HWS has is that it is not dependent on the front glass for the reticle. In fact, if the user were to experience a catastrophic incident where the front glass were to break or be damaged, the sight would still work and maintain zero. Further, the back glass, where the reticle is captured, can also be broken and the user will still be able to see and use the reticle in the remaining pieces of glass. Red dots are dependent on their front glass to reflect the dot back to your eye; if damaged or broken, the dot may not be seen or the zero maintained.
HWS also has an advantage over a red dot when using a magnifier. With the HWS, the dot size does not magnify with the target. The user maintains the small 1 MOA aiming dot, but now can see the target 3X to 5X closer. Red dots grow in size consistent with the target when viewed with magnification, so there is no additional gain in accuracy like we find in holography.
Now that EOTECH is no longer a division of a large defense contractor, it is nimbler and better able to accommodate changing market conditions.
Other advantages include the rectangular window for better field of view, common battery options, and an integrated mounting base that removes the need for additional mounts. Finally, the HWS is 100-percent made in the USA.
SD: Now that EOTECH is no longer a division of a large defense contractor, is it nimbler and better able to accommodate changing market conditions?
JB: When EOTECH was acquired by L3, it immediately benefited from an infusion of money that helped grow the brand and meet increasing demands. But with that came a lot of corporate bureaucracy, red tape, and multiple levels for decisions. This really slowed us down. On top of that, EOTECH was the only commercial product company in their portfolio, so we were often misunderstood or overlooked. Now that we are independent again, we have removed the corporate stiffs and have built a team that includes many past EOTECH employees that were key to the company’s initial success. They have been joined with other like-minded, proactive, and eager individuals interested in taking EOTECH to a new level of greatness. Product development, investment, budget, and marketing decisions are now all made inside the building. Areas such as speed to market, clear and consistent communications to our channels, thorough but rapid international licensing, and top-notch customer service are all areas of major focus.
SD: EOTECH likes to call itself a “technology innovator.” Just what does that mean for your customers?
JB: We are innovators in technology. Our holographic technology is still some of the most advanced optical technology for firearms in the last 25 years. For the customer, though, it means products that will improve their performance, whether it’s hunting, competition, home defense, or protecting the community or country. It also means that they can depend on these products. We lead with technology in the way we test and validate our new products under development as well as current products being produced every day. Sophisticated equipment to simulate recoil, thermal shock, water submersion, and more are all included in our process to ensure that the products we build will withstand all conditions and situations of its users.
SD: EOTECH recently introduced its first LED optic. What is that product and what made EOTECH go that route?
JB: We are a holographic company, but it was hard to watch the evolution of optics-ready pistols take place without being involved. We would have loved to introduce a holographic pistol sight, but the ability to scale this technology down that small is still out of reach. The next best thing was to design and develop our own LED-based pistol sight instead. The EFLX Mini Red Dot is a rugged, “full-size” micro red dot that includes features like an aluminum housing, top-loading 2032 battery, and common DeltaPoint Pro footprint. One area that stands us apart from other pistol optics is our clear, transparent glass lens. Most red dots use colored coatings to help reflect the dot, but we were able to achieve a very crisp, visible dot while maintaining a very clear window. In addition, we made the aspect ratio of the window the same as our Holographic Weapon Sight, so the field of view is generous. That, in turn, enhances the user’s ability to quickly find the dot. With an SRP of $389, we feel this will be a very competitive product in the premium pistol-sight market.
SD: Night vision gets a lot of attention these days. How important is that market segment to you?
JB: It’s an extremely important category for us. One of the few benefits we had while under L3 was access to their night-vision and thermal products. We became the “go-to” resource for LE and federal agencies across the country. Last year, we partnered with Theon Sensors, a Greek manufacturer of high-quality, military-grade NV/ IR devices, to develop an EOTECH-branded line of products. This lineup includes both mono and binocular NV systems and clip-on NV and thermal optics. These products compete head to head with the L3 products in both performance and price while offering some additional features and benefits. We are excited to get these products in the hands of our military and LE agencies.
SD: What was the inspiration for the creation of the new Vudu riflescope line? How has it been received by your customers?
JB: For years, EOTECH has been a leader in the firearms optics industry, but with a very limited line of products. The logical next step was to venture into
the magnified optics space by developing premium riflescopes that match the high-quality, high-performance characteristics of our holographic sights. But the riflescope market is extremely crowded, and it’s difficult to stand apart. We went in with the goal of meeting or beating our competition in every way. This includes areas for the consumer such as features and benefits, warranty, clarity, craftsmanship, and price while providing solid margins and customer service and support for our dealers. This strategy helped us develop the Vudu line of riflescopes that include both first- and second-focal plane offerings and a wide variety of magnification ranges from which to choose. We pushed the boundaries of what can be optically achieved, and that is evident in our 1-10X and 5-25X super-short scope. We are very proud of the Vudu line, and it is doing very well. We believe we carved out a nice chunk of the premium scope market, and we will remain dedicated to grow this line and our position.
SD: Many of your employees are veterans. How does their service in the military help EOTECH achieve its goals?
JB: It helps in many ways. First, the military is exceptional at molding individuals into hard-working,
respectful, mission-oriented people. These are attributes every company is looking for in an employee. Second, their training and/or combat experience helps us better understand what products are needed, how they must be designed, and how they must perform. In addition, we have many veterans in our sales and marketing departments who have a Rolodex of contacts, and they understand the complex nature of military budgets, solicitations, and future programs. Federal took aim at the most competitive handgun cartridge market, and with its new 30 Super Carry, it scored a bull's-eye.
by Brad FitzpatrickFederal celebrated 100 years in business in 2022, and over the last century this brand has helped advance shotgun, rimfire, and centerfire ammunition design. But to remain relevant in a competitive market Federal has to continue producing innovative products that challenge our long-held beliefs about ammunition products. That’s exactly what the new 30 Super Carry cartridge does.
“We looked at all the new gun owners that came into the marketplace and the established gun owners that were getting into defensive carry,” says Mike Holm, Federal’s product director. “We knew the critical factors when selecting a personal defense gun were concealability, performance, and capacity.”
From there, Holm took a closer look at the two most popular self-defense loads available at the time—the 9mm Luger and .380 Auto.
“We wanted to know if we could bridge the gap between the .380 Auto and the 9mm,” Holm says. What Holm and his team quickly realized is that there is a substantial difference in the performance of the .380 and the 9mm. Federal didn’t have to split the difference between the two rounds in terms of terminal performance. Instead, the manufacturer set out to create a cartridge that matched 9mm performance, but with a smaller footprint.
There was a clear performance gap between the 9mm and .380, but bridging that gap would require an innovative design. Holm decided to use a smaller bullet, so he selected the .312-inch projectile that had served as the basis for the .327 Federal Magnum. That would result in a cartridge that was smaller in diameter than the 9mm, but matching the Luger’s performance would require increased pressure.
“The major hurdle with the 30 Super Carry was developing a cartridge case that could handle the additional pressure required to match 9mm performance with a .312-inch bullet,” Holm says. To make the 30 Super Carry practical, it would have to produce recoil that was on par with the 9mm or slightly lower. There also couldn’t be any pressure concerns with the new cartridge.
Fortunately, as testing got underway and firearms manufacturers began to produce 30 Super Carry prototypes, there were no issues with the cartridge’s increased pressure. The 30 Super Carry functioned well in semi-auto handguns during initial development, and gel testing proved this to be a capable round that matched the performance of the 9mm and substantially exceeded that of the .380 Auto. In bare ballistic gel testing, Speer’s Gold Dot 115-grain JHP load at 1,150 feet per second penetrated 13.85 inches, better than Gold Dot 124grain 9mm+P ammunition (12 inches) and Gold Dot .380 Auto (9 inches). During testing with Federal’s HST ammunition in gel with a heavy clothing barrier, the 30 Super Carry also outper-

formed the other two rounds. Federal’s HST 30 Super Carry 100-grain load penetrated 15.5 inches and expanded to a maximum of .530 inch. The 9mm 124-grain and 147-grain loads penetrated 14.5 and 14.6 inches in the cloth barrier/gel test, respectively; the 9mm bullets expanded to between .571 and .605 inch. The .380 Auto managed just 9.95 inches of penetration with a 99-grain HST load and a maximum expansion of .588 inch. Federal’s .380 Auto HST load carries about 223 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle while the 9mm 124-grain HST generates 381 footpounds and the 147-grain load produces 313 footpounds. The smaller 30 Super Carry 100-grain HST bullet, driven at a velocity of 1,250 fps, produces 347 foot-pounds of punch.
These test results clearly show that, as Holm says, the 30 Super Carry doesn’t equally split the difference between the 9mm and the .380. Rather, the 30 Super Carry outperforms the 9mm and does so with a smaller form factor, which translates to more rounds in the magazine. But what’s the price for that increased energy and velocity? Is the 30 Super Carry too much gun for new shooters to handle?
“The first thing people want to know about is the recoil,” Holm says.

of both guns. My takeaway? The 30 Super Carry has a faster recoil pulse, as you might expect, but I believe differences in recoil between these two rounds are so minimal that the average shooter won’t notice the difference. In similarweight guns you can expect the 30 Super Carry to produce recoil that’s very close to that of a 9mm.
Part of the performance advantage of the 30 Super Carry boils down to bullet design. Rather than use available .312-inch bullets, Federal’s engineers tweaked the profiles, jacket thickness, and other factors of their 100- and 115-grain bullet offerings until they arrived at a bullet shape and design that offered the best terminal ballistics. Holm says the engineering team did a fantastic job tweaking the 30 Super Carry’s .312-inch bullets to get maximum performance, and that dedication and attention to detail is apparent when you compare this new round to the 9mm.
Because the 30 Super Car ry has a smaller form factor, gun manufacturers can build these guns using existing 9mm models (as was the case with the Smith & Wesson) or on 30 Super Carry-specific frames that are smaller and feature a reduced grip diameter. When guns are built using existing 9mm frames, the 30 Super Carry offers increased capacity. Initial testing suggested that single-stack pistols chambered in 30 Super Carry would hold one or two more rounds than 9mm versions of the same gun. That’s the case for the Shield EZ, which holds 10 rounds in the magazine in 30 Super Carry compared to eight rounds in 9mm. Smith & Wesson’s new 30 Super Carry M&P Shield Plus actually holds 13 rounds, three more than the 9mm version. Double-stack 30 Super Carry magazines hold at least two more rounds than their 9mm counterparts.
So, what would a 30 Super Carry-specific pistol look like? A 30 Super Carry double-stack magazine would measure .639 inch wide, substantially less than the .728-inch width of a 9mm double-stack magazine. This reduces grip width by as much as an inch, so 30 Super Carry double-stack pistols with grips of .9 inch or even less are possible. Ten rounds of 30 Super Carry require a magazine box depth of 1.884 inches, while 11 rounds will fit in a magazine that’s 2.055 inches deep—less than the 2.145 inches required for a 10-round 9mm mag. This allows the 30 Super Carry to be built in lighter, smaller pistols than the 9mm without giving up magazine capacity or terminal performance.
In addition to Smith & Wesson, Nighthawk Custom in Berryville, Arkansas, was one of the first firearms manufacturers to offer 30 Super Carry pistols. Their GRP and President 1911s
are both available in 30 Super Carry, and both of these pistols hold two more rounds than their 9mm counterparts. I tested a Nighthawk GRP 30 Super Carry with Nighthawk’s IOS optics mounting system with a Trijicon RMR in place. That pistol was extremely accurate, producing five-shot groups between 1.07 and 1.30 inches at 25 yards while managing to produce multiple groups under one inch at that range. That level of performance speaks to Nighthawk’s quality, of course, but also to the 30 Super Carry’s accuracy potential.
There are currently six loads available for the 30 Super Carry including three defensive loads (Federal’s 100-grain HST, Speer’s 115-grain Gold Dot, and Remington’s 100-grain HTP) as well as FMJ loads from Blazer, American Eagle, and Remington that range from 100 to 115 grains. Because Federal’s sister brands have cooperated in the effort to roll out new ammo for the 30 Super Carry, there were plenty of options for shooters, and these loads are relatively affordable (FMJ loads carry an SRP of $30.99 to $31.99 for 50; defensive loads run between $26.99 and $36.99 for 20—very close to 9mm loads). In addition to the wide range of ammo options, other Vista Outdoor companies are producing accessories. RCBS is offering dies, Hoppe’s is offering cleaning kits, and Uncle Mike’s and BLACKHAWK! are offering holsters.
Early reports are that demand for 30 Super Carry handguns and ammunition are higher than projected.
“Sales out of the gate were fantastic,” Holm says. “We had to ramp up production.”
Will the 30 Super Carry replace the 9mm? Not likely. But that was never Federal’s intention. Holm says that the goal was to “give people an option,” and it’s a very good option. More rounds, more penetration, and less mass? Who doesn’t love that in a defense pistol? Booth #11838
