Community Enrichment with the Dietert Center

COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT The Dietert Center keeps you independent

In a normal year (pre-pandemic), besides providing great meals, stimulating classes and activities, the Dietert Center’s Community Services Department offers help for those less active, as well as their caregivers.

Dietert’s Community Services Coordinator, Nick Villanueva, welcomes Kerr County seniors’ inquiries regarding area services. He helps with everything from home health agencies to senior housing, plus handyman volunteers who assist with small home repairs.

Our free Reassurance Call service has clients who live alone call the Center each morning to check-in before 10:00 a.m. If a call is not received by this time, we call to check on them. This program assures these friends they’re not alone. Last year we answered 4,668 check-in calls. Dietert’s free Medical Equipment Lending program is recycling at its finest. We accept clean, gently used items such as walkers, canes, shower chairs, wheelchairs, and other items then lend them to those in need. Last year we loaned over 900 pieces of equipment. Nick Villanueva, Community Services Coordinator, can be reached at 830-792-4044, ext. 244.

Dietert’s PAL (Personal Alert Link) Emergency Response Systems provide peace of mind 24/7, at the push of a button. Our new mobile units work anywhere there’s cell phone service. More than 325 PALs are installed throughout the Hill Country. Give Rick Phipps a call at 830-792-4044 ext. 223 to get you set up. Remember, these units are set up and serviced by our Dietert staff personally, unlike the units you can order online.

Caregiving for an elder loved-one with cognitive decline is both challenging and loving. Dietert’s caregiver resource center offers caregiver support groups, and Dementia Care Advocates training sessions. Our on-site day respite service, the Take Five Club, will open again as soon as we can assure safety and health precautions are in place. Coordinator Peggy Pilkenton, RN can give you all the information you need for these programs. Give her a call at 792-4044 ext. 225. Call us—we can help!

Brenda Thompson is the Dietert Center’s Executive Director. Contact her at 830-792-4044, ext. 247, or visit the Center’s website: DietertCenter.org. The Dietert Center is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization located at 451 Guadalupe Street in Kerrville.
