Nightmare at Our House
he said...she said...
Be sure to read She Said He Said in Evince.
by Larry Oldham & Dena Hill
He Said... It’s four o’clock in the morning and I’m sleeping like a baby. Suddenly I hear groaning, whining, and loud breathing, simultaneously. I’m not worried about being knifed, shot, or robbed. I’m worried that you have awakened with another one of your nightmares. Most people dream and occasionally have scary dreams, but you have some really weird activities going on in your head while the rest of the world in trying to sleep. You are the only person that I know of who has realistic dreams, realistic to you, anyway. When you wake and start berating me because of your dream, I start to get just a little worried and a lot paranoid. Number one, I am not the cause of the problems in your dream process, but for some reason I get the blame. This latest one takes the cake. I hope you don’t mind if I share it. You came back from the bathroom at four AM and I asked if you were all right. In a dejected voice, you told me that you were mad at me. Now this isn’t good to hear at four in the afternoon, let alone, four in the morning. “What did I do?” I asked innocently. “You told me you didn’t love me anymore and that you were leaving.” “Oh,” I said. “What did you do that made me want to leave?” I had to stifle a laugh when you told me that I left you because I was jealous of your TV.You must be feeling guilty because you would rather watch TV than spend time alone with me.You know I don’t like most TV programs. I’d rather both of us spend time talking or reading. So, in order to compensate for your guilt, you manufactured this ridiculous dream to blame me for it. No matter how much I tried to explain that this dream wasn’t real, I couldn’t convince you of it.You kept saying that it seemed so real. I can hardly wait for another dream to see what I’m going to be blamed for next.
She Said...
First of all, I’m completely aware of the fact that dreams aren’t real. But, that doesn’t keep me from being angry with you for doing something to trigger the thoughts precipitating a nightmare. Who else can get into my psyche like you do? Remember last month when we were at the Institute viewing the Christmas trees with a friend of mine and you ran into a former neighbor? We were across the room from you, and your friend asked which one was your wife. I had on a white sweater and she had on a red one; without hesitating, you said the one wearing the red sweater and you didn’t bother to explain. So, on that night you dreamt that an old girlfriend ran off with your best friend. Serves you right for that dry sense of humor you constantly exhibit. If you would just let me come home from work, relax, go out to dinner, and get to bed early with no outside interference, maybe I wouldn’t go to sleep all keyed up and anxious. That anxiety is more than likely what causes nightmares. As long as we’re talking about dreams/ nightmares, I particularly liked the one you had about Sophie and you profess not to even like dogs. You have to admit, she’s an awesome dog, who has won you over. She gets all wiggly and excited just looking at you so if that isn’t reality, I don’t know what is. The good thing about when you dream though is that you’re able to keep quiet enough for me to sleep through them. In your case, your dreams are probably triggered by something on TRU TV or one of those shows that you watch on that thing that you don’t like CALLED A TELEVISION. I guess one thing is for certain, sleeping with each other is never dull just a new dimension for us old timers.

Modern Marketing Program Guide
financial
Most people want to be successful, but few plan to be. Very few people take the time to plan anything. Most people take more time to plan their vacations than they do to plan their lives. The most important thing you can do right now for your business is sit down and develop a marketing plan. Most business owners fail or they just move along because they do not have a plan or goal for their business. I want you to decide right now to make a detailed plan of what you are going to do and how you are going to do it. It is the old saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” You can say, I want to make more money or I want to be rich. That is nice, but too vague. You want $25,000 sales per month. That is not a plan. A plan is a detailed specific road of how you are going to reach the targets you set out and the date that you want to reach them by. An example is that you can set sales goals. You can sell so many of your products for a week or so many of your services for a week. You should offset these in net profit instead of gross profit because that is the money you are making. I know one gentleman who grosses $7,000,000 a year.Very impressive. He takes home $100,000 of that. That is not very impressive. It may be nice to have $100,000 a year, but it is not impressive when you are grossing $7,000,000. That will not tell you how well you are doing. You want to put down the numbers in net profit. If you know your net per sale, and most business owners do not even know this, but if you do, you are way ahead of the game. You can work backwards on how many sales you need. Then all you have to do is increase your number of sales per week or net profit per sale. Develop a strategy for making those numbers. Decide how you are going to advertise. How am I going to get referrals? How am I going to get people to buy more

often? How am I going to get people to spend more? This is the beginning of your marketing plan. Do not panic if you have a bad week. Just get right back on track and try to achieve the next week’s goals. You want to get to know the numbers for your business. It is a business of numbers. You need to know the net profit per sale, net profit per service call, and how much it costs to get your new clients. These are critical in knowing where you are and if you are achieving your goals.
| JANUARY 2012 | www.showcasemagazine.com
Take some time each week to plan. It is critical. Here is a guide for you to use. Write down your goal for your total net income you want next week. Write down the number of new clients that it will take to get that. Write down your goal for number of repeat clients that you want to achieve. Write down how many service calls you are going to make if you are a service business. Write down how many products you have to sell. Write down the net income for each item and your average income per client. You will come up with the total income you are trying to achieve. Each week put down the actual numbers you achieve and you will find out if you are reaching them or not. Then you will know if you need to increase marketing and in what areas. One great need of small business managers for 2012 is to understand and develop marketing programs for their products and services. Long term small business success depends on the ability to maintain a strong body of satisfied customers while continually increasing this body with new customers. Modern marketing programs build around the marketing concept, which directs managers to focus their efforts on identifying, satisfying, and following up the customer’s needs - all at a profit. In addition, periodically assess customers’ feelings and opinions toward the business and how well their needs are being satisfied. This can be done through surveys, customer comment cards, or simply by asking them, “How are we doing?” Assessing performance and asking for customer input brings us back around market research again.Your marketing plan is a continuous effort to identify and adapt to changes in markets, customer taste, and the economy for the success of your small business.

story & photography by Kathy Cropp
There is also a winter-blooming Rhododendron called Christmas Cheer. It takes a few years to be established before it blooms, but from the pictures and from other growers I think the wait will be worth it. Like most Rhododendrons it needs a more acidic soil and definitely shade from any hot afternoon sun.
Greetings from the Winter Garden!
green thumbs up
This is the time of year that the garden dreamers and planners look at seed catalogs, new plant introductions, and the lists that were created last year so holes in our gardens can be filled in.
Ask the Gardeners! Email your gardening questions to g4generations@ gmail.com
Those dreamers and planners have even more to choose from with the changes in horticulture over the years. We have more plant knowledge, access to a larger variety of plants and our growing seasons have been lengthened by the breeding of plants that can grow in zones unknown to them before. This has given people the chance to move into a three and four season garden. After a lot of research about our garden and searching for those plants that are a good fit for us, we have found that every fall and winter we can be rewarded with beautiful blooms and other winter interests in our garden. This month we want to introduce you to some of those winter blooming plants and to encourage you to check out the areas in your own garden where some of these beauties can grow. Just remember when it comes to any plant decisions make sure it is the right plant for the right place. A good starting place is with one of my favorite shrubs, the Edgeworthia Chrysantha. It has a common name, but it varies so much across the country that it is easiest to find it by its Latin name. This shrub can grow to about 8’ by 8’, in sun or partial sun. It has green elliptical leaves all summer but in the fall those leaves fall off and it gets small white bell- shaped flowers that open in late winter with yellow clusters and an incredible fragrance. It is a good shrub for any season.
Of course, you have some great choices with the fall, winter, and spring blooming Camellias (C. japonica/C. sasanqua). The flowers are so diverse and they can cover the shrub with hundreds of small to mid-sized blossoms. They not only range in color from white to pink to red but also from single, semi-double, and double blooms.

Another tree to consider is the (Acer palmatum) Japanese Maple or ‘Sango Kaku’. Its common name is the Coral Bark Maple and its lovely red bark is striking in the winter landscape. This is actually a tree that offers four season interest with its spring, summer, and fall leaf color. It makes a great specimen choice where it can get a lot of attention in your garden. A plant that is growing more and more popular is the Hellebore (Helleborus) or the name you may recognize is the Lenten Rose. This plant is being hybridized by growers so you are getting so many color choices as well as various flower styles in singles or doubles. This plant can start blooming in December and last until the hot weather of May or June. The blooms can be red, pink, white, cream and even purple. There is one that was introduced last year and is called ‘Grape Galaxy’. It was introduced by breeder Chris Hansen of Great Garden Plants. (www.greatgardenplants.com) We also have some wonderful Hellebore breeders close by, Dick and Judith Tyler of Pine Knot Nursery. Another favorite choice is the (Hamamelis spp. or Hamamelis virginiana) ‘Witch Hazel’. The flowers on this shrub can actually tolerate the cold, harsh conditions of a winter day. The bright firecracker looking blooms look so cheerful and encouraging on a gray winter da. The blooms remind you that spring is coming. Witch Hazel flourishes in full sun, moist, well-drained rich, organic soil and it’s well worth researching to see if the plant will fit well in your space. The myriad of choices go on from there with Yellow- and Red-twigged Dogwoods, winter-blooming Irises, Daffodils, Heaths, Heathers, Daphnes and Azaleas just to name a few that work well in our Zone 7. We recommend two books, Wonders of the Winter Landscape by Vincent A. Simeone and Winter Blooming Shrubs by Michael W. Buffin. Both are great resources as you start to find ways to enjoy your garden all year round.

The Individuals Live at the Danville City Armory
While Southside Virginia may not be the musical mecca of the South, a number of groups started their journey in the Danville area. A few groups gained national notoriety, while others languished in obscurity until their recordings were “discovered” by record collectors.

Many recorded for Danville’s Raven Records, an independent label owned by Frank Koger, who worked in the electronics department at the local K-Mart and moonlighted as a record producer. His small studio -- The House of Sound -- was located on Old Piney Forest Road and produced some excellent soul and garage 45s before Koger moved to Nashville to try his hand at country music. Not surprising, since most of the artists who passed through the studio’s doors were of the country or bluegrass variety. Singers like Susan Lea, Ralph Viar, Paul Parker, The Wilsons, and the label’s best seller, a Christmas recitation 45 by WDVA disc jockey Homer T. But our focus is on the garage bands and the dozen or so discs for which the label is still remembered. Bands like The Individuals, Lost Soul, and the IV Pack.

The Individuals Best known for fiddle music, flue-cured tobacco and as the buckle of the Bible belt, Halifax County was an unlikely breeding ground for would-be rockers. But young Ronnie Couch was never a traditionalist. Check out the earliest promo shot of his band from 1965 and you’ll see a drummer whose hair was already shoulder-length, a full two years before anyone else in his hometown of South Boston dared to be so different. That didn’t make life at school easy and teachers were constantly reminding Ronnie that they “had an eye” on him. That didn’t seem to matter because, after all, he was an individual. The band started as a four-piece combo in the basement of Couch’s home in 1964. The original line-up included Couch, lead singer Glenn Meadows, bassist Tommy Redd, and lead guitarist Ben Vaughan. Meadows would later leave the band and the group would supplement its sound to include Sammy Moser on organ and rhythm guitarist and vocalist Ronnie Vaughan. Mike Oakes would replace Moser on keyboards shortly before the group disbanded. Glenn Meadows contributed much to the early
the house that Koger built
But styles changed and so did the group. With a new attitude and a newfound affection for the music of the British Invasion, the Rhythm-Makers became The Individuals. And while they were just one of a million garage groups to organize in the wake of Beatlemania, The Individuals were one of the few to go beyond covering current hits and incorporate original material in their act. The songs were penned by Couch, Redd and newcomer Ronnie Vaughan.
Soulmasters performing at Danville’s 360 Drive-In during the Summer of 1967 The Individuals Newspaper Ad
The Individuals found steady – though not very lucrative – work at bowling alleys, dance halls, night clubs, and as the supporting act for recording artists who performed at venues like the Danville City Auditorium. Engagements included a shared bill with Danville’s Soulmasters at the T-Bird Country, dates at an old school converted to a dance hall known as the Oak Level Club in Halifax County and for the Liberty 4-H Club, Hupps Mill Bowling Alley in South Boston, the Skylark Club on Rt. 86 in North Carolina, and a three-day stint in 1967 on the main Grand Strand Stage at the Halifax County Fair.
Meadows left the band over “creative differences” and guitarist Ronnie Vaughan and bassist Tommy Redd took over the vocal chores. Redd sings lead on both sides of their 45. Moser stayed with the group through late 1967, when he was replaced on organ by Mike Oakes. One of Oakes’ first performances with The Individuals was in November 1967 at the Danville City Armory. They were originally known as the Rhythm-Makers, due to the band’s predilection for rhythm and blues music. Couch and his friends had an affinity for R&B and started jamming in his home. As word of the sessions grew, more people would stop by Ronnie’s house to listen. The guys soon realized they were on to something. The band graduated from basement practice sessions to the stage with their first performance at the American Legion Hall in South Boston on March 25, 1965.
Raven 2018 was released in August of 1967. The record received heavy airplay over WHLF in South Boston, boosted by Al Mapes, a blind deejay who featured the disc on his “1400 Club” show. “I Want Love” also made the playlist of a radio station in Brookneal,Va. WYPR in Danville picked up the record and even had the band in the studio on Industrial Avenue to promote the song. The band sold every copy and Couch still has the $108 invoice for a second pressing of the 45.
Johnny Cole, whose father owned local radio station WHLF, recalls the band performing at his school, Halifax Elementary. Instead of spinning nursery rhymes from a phonograph, The Individuals played “Get Off Of My Cloud” live as the kids walked from number to number, in hopes of winning the cake walk when the band stopped in mid-stride. While just a child, Cole remembers the moment as if it were yesterday.
The Individuals remained popular in the region, playing with other local bands like the Soulmasters and recording artists including Sam and Dave. Couch recalls one local gig around this time at The Danville Fairgrounds, home of the popular WDVA Barn Dance and a staple for country acts and rockabilly pioneers like the late Janis Martin. The Individuals were booked to play on a bill with several top soul bands. It wasn’t until the day of the performance that The Individuals realized they were the only white act on the bill. Undeterred, the band simply switched gears and reverted to their rhythm and blues roots, playing a 30-minute rendition of The Fantastic Johnny C’s “Funky Broadway” that brought the crowd to their feet.
By 1967, the band had grand aspirations and decided it was time to cut a record. Frank Koger worked a day job in the electronics department at K-Mart in nearby Danville but also moonlighted as a local record mogul, recording gospel, country, bluegrass, soul and the occasional garage band from Virginia, West Virginia or the Carolinas.
Home recordings from the period show a variety of styles ranging from the Buddy Holly-ish original “Come Back,” to a cover of James Brown’s 1959 hit, “Try Me.” The band also put its stamp on other current chart hits including “Pushin’ Too Hard,” “96 Tears,” “Mustang Sally” and “Little Black Egg.”
The deal was struck and the band agreed to pay Koger $250 to record, press and distribute 500 records. The Individuals would sell 200 through local department and five-and-dime stores like Leggett’s, Rose’s and J.J. Newberry’s. Koger, who had connections in Nashville, agreed to distribute the remainder to radio stations across the country.
Another original composition, “The Fire Is Out,” was planned as the follow-up to their initial release, but the song was never recorded and no rehearsal tapes of the song have been found.
Their fee was a modest $75, which barely covered the cost of guitar strings and drum sticks when split five ways. But Couch says they just loved playing, and “if we got paid, that was fine, too.”

vocal, and Moser’s organ featured prominently in the mix. The flip side was slower with a fuzz guitar, no chorus, and a brief spoken recitation near the end. Interestingly, the version heard on disc was not the intended release, but an outtake. When the master tapes were sent to Nashville for pressing, Koger mistakenly sent an alternate version of “I Really Do,” not the take that the group intended for release. Since none of the studio’s original tapes survived, the best version remains lost.
The band entered Koger’s “House of Sound” in the summer of ‘67 to record two originals: “I Want Love” backed with “I Really Do” for Raven Records. Both songs were written by bassist Tommy Redd. The A-side was a straightforward, up-tempo rocker with solid drumming, a raving
Around this time, The Individuals shared a bill at the Danville City Armory with several local bands, including the Purple Haze Publication and Light Show, an aggregation led by Danville musician Truxton Fulton. Couch says the performance was an eye opener for The Individuals, who immediately gravitated to the psychedelic sounds that dominated AM radio during the summer of love. continued on page 42

A radical shift in style followed, from their straightforward delivery of current hits to electrified interpretations of album cuts from groups like the Shadows of Knight,Yardbirds and the Blues Magoos. Couch’s record collection helped introduce the band to the new sounds. He explains that while they would cover the hits – like “Gloria” – the group also incorporated obscure album tracks like a cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Back Door Man,” the Shadows’ “Bad Little Woman” and” I’ll Make You Sorry,” along with the Magoo’s arrangement of “Tobacco Road” and a version of “Turn On Love Light” that paid homage to Van Morrison’s group, Them. Recordings from this period show the change in styles, complete with fuzzed and phased guitars and vocals that give the band a sound of “organized distortion.” As 1968 dawned, the band seemed poised for success. The group had a record under their belt; Ronnie’s dad, H.B. Couch, had taken over management of a band that now billed itself as “The Individuals: Electric and Blues Combo Recording for Raven Records;” and the group had made arrangements to buy all new Vox Super Beatle amps through Southern Music in Richmond. The order was later canceled. The first pressing of their debut single had sold out and more copies were ordered, and the band was rehearsing “The Fire Is Out” as the intended follow-up. But it was not to be. Within weeks, The Individuals were no more. Couch blames the break-up on “raging hormones.” It seems a girlfriend of one of the members became pregnant. He left the band and the remaining members packed up their equipment and called it a day. Reflecting on the break-up four decades later, Couch laments that they should have just found a new guitarist and soldiered on. But they were young and didn’t consider recruiting a replacement. Still lanky, lean and long-haired nearly 45 years after the fact, Couch has a youthful swagger that belies his true age. And while the disappointment

in his voice is obvious, he remains stoic about the fate of The Individuals. Reflecting on those heady days of the late sixties, Couch says the group “might have made $3,000,000, but then again we might not have gone anywhere; we’ll never know.”
The Soulmasters The Soulmasters held their first practices in Eden, North Carolina. Organizers Doug Hyler and Wayne Womble met John Irby and Jerry Wilson while jamming with the area’s best soul band, the New Breed. Practices were soon moved to Danville. Irby said the move was necessitated by threats from the Klan; however, Womble insists that wasn’t the case and Danville was chosen because most members lived in the textile town. Either way, having two black vocalists fronting a white soul band proved difficult in the Old South. Bill Adams, who played keyboards after Womble’s departure, recalls that “John and Jerry both would get on the floor of the bus when passing through certain towns.” On one occasion, the entire band was thrown out of a restaurant in Carolina Beach. While Adams was visibly shaken, Jerry just shrugged and said, “Welcome to my world.” Four local bands merged to create the Sensational Soulmasters and the group went on to pack dances at the Coke Plant, the 360 Drive-In, Baldwin’s Gymtorium in Martinsville and The Pavilion in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The group expanded to 12-pieces and was slated to perform at Amateur Night at the famed Apollo Theater in New York in 1968. The trip was canceled following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. The Soulmasters recorded one 45 for Raven Records in 1967. Womble recalls that the studio was simple, even by sixties standards, and included a single, two-track recorder. WYPR DJ Bill Dudley financed the sessions and the group spent two days recording “I’ll Be Waiting Here” and “You Took Away the Sunshine.” Something went awry when the master tapes were sent off to the pressing plant and both sides came back at the wrong speed. Womble has since digitally corrected the problem and the results are amazing.

Sax player Doug Hyler wrote the B-side at his dad’s house, in his bedroom. He regards “You Took Away the Sunshine” as “a better reflection of the Soulmasters as a whole, with John and Jerry doing a lot of counterpoint.” More time was spent on “I’ll be Waiting Here,” as it was the intended “hit” side. Bassist Ernie Dickens recalls promoter and DJ Bill Dudley paying $200 for the session and 500 45s, adding: “I think we gave away more than we sold.” Hyler says the sessions were “lengthy, tedious, and fun,” describing trumpeter Dennis Shephard’s idea to pause near the end of “Sunshine” as “awesome.” Both are great songs, but “Sunshine” sounds more spontaneous and soulful. Both sides charted on AM stations in the area and the single became a regional hit for the band while reaching the Top 10 on WLAC in Nashville. Womble recalls that the band re-recorded both tunes in Raleigh at a better studio in 1968 or 1969. But vocalist Jerry Wilson gave the master tapes to Eddie Floyd (“Knock On Wood”) in hopes that the soul singer “could do something for us.” There were no copies. Soul great Arthur Conley heard the group and was so impressed that he invited the Soulmasters to perform in Raleigh as his personal band. The invitation was declined, as was Conley’s offer for the group to accompany him on a month-long tour of Europe. Womble points out that many of the Soulmasters were still in high school. Dickens accompanied Wilson to the Apollo Theater in 1968 to secure a booking for the band. He recalls seeing James Brown perform and running into the Godfather of Soul again in his hometown of Augusta, Georgia around 1983. Brown “actually remembered us and chatted for quite a long time about those days in the sixties on what he called the chitlin’ circuit.” There were numerous personnel changes between 1968 and 1970, when the Soulmasters called it a day. As Hyler reflects on those years, he calls it “a different time.”
Gene and the Team Beats
drafted into the Army. Butch Fox switched to lead guitar and his 12-year-old brother, Rickie, picked up the bass. Fox ended up playing with the group for several years, first on bass, later on guitar and finally on drums when Mickey Walker was drafted. His drumming can be heard on the band’s first two records. Fox says his most vivid memory is playing with Otis Redding in Martinsville in 1965. Fox was also with the band when they backed Percy Sledge and the Shangri-Las. The group also performed with Sam and Dave, Joe Simon, Inez Foxx, Freddie Cannon, William Bell and the Kelly Brothers.
Gene and the Team Beats were led by Gene Rumley of Martinsville,Virginia, who played sax and booked the band in the ‘60s after starting his musical career in a group called the Corvettes in high school. The Team Beats performed mostly in Virginia, North and South Carolina and DC from 1959-1968. The band started recording late in their career, with all three 45s released in 1966 and ‘67. The Team Beat’s first single release, “I’ll Carry On” was on Leatherwood. Gene explains that the band saved some money “from a couple of gigs, rented a studio near Rocky Mount somewhere and cut our first record, which we self-promoted.” Rumley describes the recording quality as “bad,” noting “there was not much separation at all... probably one, two tracks because we were playing like we were playing in a nightclub and had the volume cranked up. When the sound came out, we were not too happy with it.” For their second release, “I Want’A Be Your Baby,” Gene and drummer Mickey Walker got in the car “and drove for two days from Danville to Richmond, up to a guy playing all kind of rhythm and blues out in Delaware. Just anybody who would listen to us we go into a studio and try and tell them who we were and what we were doing.” The personnel on “I Want’A Be Your Baby” is: Gene Rumley (sax and backup vocals); Charles Hairston (lead vocal); Lonnie Woodall (guitar and backup vocals); Rickie Fox (drums); Carl Barrow (bass). “I Want’A Be Your Baby,” and “I’ll Let Nothing Separate Me” were the group’s second and third 45 releases, respectively. Both were recorded for Raven Records in Danville. The former received extensive local airplay and is regarded as a classic in the genre. “I’ll Let Nothing Separate Me” is a cover of an obscure song by the Wallace Brothers that outshines the original. Jimmy Mitchell was the lead vocalist, replacing Hairston, who had been drafted. The song features excellent drumming by Eddie Scott. Since they didn’t write their own material, Rumley says the band would “sit down and listen to old records” then decide which tunes would be suitable for the group. A fourth single release was planned and the backing track was recorded. The project was shelved after the group’s new lead singer, Alfonzo Martin of Martinsville, was drafted. The group disbanded shortly thereafter. Gene describes Martin’s vocal
As he was too young to drive, Fox recalls that “when my ride left the band, I had to leave, too.” He went on to play with the Soulmasters, the Majors, City Council, the Manchesters and Fox and Company. Fox continues to record and perform today, both as a solo artist and with his band, 58 West. Other musicians and singers who performed with Gene & The Team Beats include Carl Clark and Wayne Motley.
range as “unbelievable.” Martin served in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was killed by hostile fire in Vietnam.
Leader Gene Rumley says while the band was small in number, they were able to get a “fat” sound because of the musicianship of each of the members. They were primarily a soul and rhythm and blues band and Rumley points out that “Lewis (Woodall) and some of the guys hated playing rock and roll.” continued on page 44
Gene & The Team Beats was the house band at the Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach for a summer in 1962. The club was the sister of the renowned Peppermint Lounge in New York City and home of Joey Dee & The Starlighters of “Peppermint Twist” fame. Lew Woodall was the band’s original guitarist, and still performs with his own jazz quartet. He recalls the early years, when the band formed in 1959-60 as Gene and the Teenbeats. “We played most every weekend for gigs around the area in Martinsville, Danville, Roanoke, and in North Carolina. Lots of college fraternity gigs. We played several summer beach gigs. In ‘61 we played in Norfolk (Star Terrace) and in Virginia Beach at Top Hat. In ‘62 we played for the opening of the Peppermint Beach Club and as house band for the summer. In ‘63 we played a couple of months at the Twist Lounge at Nags Head. I left the Teambeats at the end of that summer when I transferred to VCU in Richmond. After graduating in ‘65, I was drafted and my brother, Lonnie, began playing with Gene while I was in Vietnam.” Musician and composer Rickie Fox was also a member and explains that his brother, Butch, got him into the group after Lew Woodall was

Gene found vocalist Charles Hairston by sheer tenacity, explaining that he went up Fayette Street in Martinsville saying: “Hey, we’re looking for a black singer to really represent our group with soul music... who’s a good singer?” Someone recommended Charles, who passed the audition and became the voice of the Team Beats. Gene says his contribution cannot be overstated and believes “Charles really made our band at that time.”

The addition brought some problems in the segregated South, where the band was refused service at a restaurant while returning from a fraternity gig at the University of Virginia. But having Hairston on vocals also allowed the Team Beats to play in some black clubs that were generally off limits to white bands. Rumley recalls one performance at Baldwin’s Gymtorium on Fayette Street in Martinsville that drew 3,000 fans. He says the old, two-story building had a balcony that circled the interior, with a high stage and a large dance floor. The Team Beats were the warm-up act that night. Rumley says when they performed, “that place was jumping and the old wooden building was literally shaking.” He says when Otis Redding took the stage the sound was “absolutely unbelievable.” Rumley recalls that the horn section from James Brown’s band had just defected to the “up and coming” Redding and says “they basically tore the roof off the place. That was one of the best jobs that we’d ever played.” The music of Gene and the Team Beats lives on today and has experienced a resurgence, especially with Northern Soul fans in the United Kingdom. Rumley is currently in talks with a UK label to have several of the band’s tracks released on compact disc.
The Lost Soul Like the Team Beats, The Lost Soul recorded two records for Raven, the first regarded as a classic among both garage and Northern Soul collectors. “Mind Expressway” certainly falls into the former category, while “A Secret of Mine” sounds more like the Beach Music popular in Virginia and the Carolinas to this day. The band traveled to Danville from Bluefield, West Virginia early in 1967 to record their first disc for Raven. Steve Calfee and Randy Conlee both played guitar and organ in the band, which started as the Prussians.
44 Showcase Magazine
While I never heard the record on our local Top 40 station, a friend and fellow musician purchased the 45 in South Boston and remembers “Mind Expressway.” The Lost Soul lip synched both tunes (with Calfee at the mic) on “The Dick Bennick Show,” which aired on WGHP Channel 8 in High Point, North Carolina. By mid-1966, Bennick’s Saturday afternoon show was following a dance party format featuring teens from area high schools and garage bands as well as recording artists like Percy Sledge. Bennick was a popular Winston-Salem disc jockey and horror movie buff, who went on to create his alter ego, Dr. Paul Bearer, the host of WGHP’s “Shock Theatre.” He took the same shtick to St. Petersburg, Florida, where Bennick achieved greater fame as host of WTOG’s “Creature Feature.” A second Lost Soul session was held in Danville later in the year, when the band recorded “For You” b/w “I’m Gonna Hurt You.” While not as impressive as their first waxing, the A-side features an interesting reverb guitar and organ work, although the chorus is sung off-key. Despite its flaws, the song is infectious. “I’m Gonna Hurt You” has a blue-eyed soul sound akin to songs played on juke boxes in Myrtle Beach. Soulmasters’ bassist Ernie Dickens is listed as ar-

ranger and conductor for both sides. I contacted Dickens in 2011, but he had no recollection of the sessions or the band.
other bands/labels The IV Pack One of the more elusive Raven productions was actually released on a one-off subsidiary label, Hippie Records. Little is known about The IV Pack, or the recording. A copy was found in the record library of WBTM AM in Danville about ten years ago but appeared to be unplayed. Other copies have turned up at local thrift stores. “Whatzit!” is a blatant steal from Count V’s “Psychotic Reaction,” with the band replacing the fuzz guitar with an organ. The flip side is a cover of Booker T. and M.G.’s “Bootleg.” The drummer barely makes it through the double-time break in the middle of “Whatzit!” but the snarling, doubletracked vocal is killer. The group may have performed in one of several battle of the bands held locally. I distinctly remember a beat up pickup truck with four silver beer cans protruding from the hood and the “IV Pack” logo painted rather sloppily on the doors. Other label mates at Raven haven’t the foggiest and were unaware that the record existed.
Piedmont Records Piedmont Records was another House of Sound offshoot that produced at least two records of note for collectors. The Mustangers recorded “What Do I Have To Pay,” listed on the label as a “rhythm and blues vocal.” It’s actually a pretty good soul song reminiscent of the Fantastic Johnny C. The flip side (“That’s My Way”) is an instrumental that was also penned by the group. Moon Mullins and the Night Raiders also recorded for Piedmont and have the distinction of being the only rock or soul band on the Raven roster to be accorded the luxury of a picture sleeve. Mullins’s band performed throughout the area and he also owned a dance hall in Madison, North Carolina. “Moon’s Danceland” was a great venue for local talent and guitarist Rick Watlington recalls playing there often. He remembers Moon (real name Dallas Mullins) as “one of the best club owners I ever worked for.” “Baby I Got You” features vocalists Mickey Hawks and Gwynn, whose last name is unknown. It’s a pretty unremarkable record. The Night Raiders released at least one other 45, “Gonna Dance Tonight, Part 1 & 2,” on Richmond’s Lance Records. The instrumental has a nice shuffle rhythm and a pumping piano and sax; however, it could’ve just as easily been recorded a decade earlier. A 1970 release on The Colony “13” label in Danville was almost certainly associated with Koger’s studio. The Greater Experience recorded “Don’t Forget to Remember” b/w “Carol’s Carol,” a northern soul rarity that commands hundreds in mint condition. The label mentions “Colony Sound Productions,” and an identical reference appears on the Mustangers’ single.
Nevermore The House of Sound closed its doors and the small building was torn down sometime around 1970, when Koger moved to Tennessee. No one associated with the studio knows what became of him or whether he is still alive. Those who recorded for Koger remember that his studio prices seemed to fluctuate based on ability to pay. Most bands tell of his minimum offer to press 50 records for $50. My first garage band approached Koger in 1967 about the prospect of recording the Royal Tramps. At the age of 10, my best friend and I thought we’d give it a shot since the group had already appeared on the Cactus Joe Show, a Saturday morning kiddie program on WSLS TV 10 in Roanoke. We telephoned Frank and persuaded him to press 50 discs for $35, provided we supplied the master tapes. My best friend was our rhythm guitarist and his father ran the audio-visual department at the local hospital. Herb had built a small soundstage and studio for in-house productions and agreed to record our band. But when the appointed day arrived, our lead guitarist and bassist (who were brothers) skipped town on a bus trip to an amusement park. Unamused, Herb swore off the Tramps and our shot at a recording career was dashed. Koger’s big ticket customers generally paid $200-$250 for 500 records, considerably less for re-orders. My older brother, Allan Garrett, played tenor sax in Artie Tompkins Orchestra, a seven-piece dance band that entered the studios some time in 1967 to record a background tape for a local beauty pageant. He recalls that the quarters were so cramped that the musicians were literally on top of each other. But while the conditions may have been primitive, the label produced a handful of great records that continue to be played more than 40 years later. www.showcasemagazine.com

Danville Area Humane Society 434.799.0843 by Paulette Dean
Executive Director, Danville Humane Society
Many years ago, I gave up making New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I choose a theme for the year. Some years, the theme is a verse from scripture, and other times it’s a short poem. This does not keep me from setting goals to be a better person, but I knew I needed to find a better way of improving when, years ago, I set a resolution to, on January 1st of the next year not weigh what I did on December 31st of the current year. I gained five pounds! Yes, I kept my resolution, but certainly not in the way that made me better. As an organization, we constantly examine our programs and procedures, and set goals for improvement. For instance, we want our adoption numbers to increase, but not if it means that we are adopting out animals into homes that will not keep the animals safe, secure, and happy. We want our goals to make life better for the animals. Our annual theme will always be one of humaneness and compassion. Our goals help us to live our theme. For 2012, our goals are: 1. We resolve to continue our important spay/neuter work. Larger shelters cannot solve the problem of overpopulation; there is only one way to do that, and that is to keep unwanted and homeless dogs and cats from being born. Since 1993, we have helped spay or neuter 20,000 animals for residents of Danville and Pittsylvania County. However, our shelter numbers continue to increase. We will not give up our focus on spaying and neutering, and one day we will be able to live in an area that does not have a large overpopulation problem.
2. We resolve to open the “no-kill” adoption center that is currently being built. We will remain an open-access shelter (we will not turn away animals), so we will not be able to completely end the euthanasia of animals. However, animals (dogs, cats, birds, small animals) accepted into the adoption center will be held until adoption or transfer to another group or facility. 3. We resolve to expand our volunteer program; in fact, the success of the adoption center will largely depend on the faithful volunteers who spend time enriching the lives of the shelter animals. 4. We resolve to help as many animals as we can, in any way we can. You can resolve to be our eyes in the community, and call in complaints of animals that are not being taken care. You can resolve to help educate your family and friends about issues that affect animals. Finally, we are grateful for the privilege we have had this year of working on behalf of the animals. As always, we hope the next year will be a kinder one for the animals. We are grateful to every person in this community who respects the critters. Without you, our work would be a heavy burden.

truths in her day-to-day life, and you will realize that you are not alone in this maniacal concept known as parenting. Yes, welcome to 5150 Lunatic Lane- Where skills and tactics are tried, tested, and often fail. But she keeps doing it anyway! Misty’s children Jason-19, Corey-11, Spencer-10, Tucker-9, and Kendall-8 know all too well the joy and sorrow of being a big family. And new husband Scott is still waiting for the punch line. two old people that have lived alone for 80 years and suddenly had to merge our lifestyles together. I think what might have happened is, he is used to wearing the pants in the relationship, and so am I. Couldn’t we both just bend a little? Well, yes, that sounds logical. But when one of you (him) doesn’t think he needs to bend at all it’s sort of hard So HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to my husband of one whole year! And what a to meet in the middle. So I’m going to make it easy (for one of us). long year it’s been, whew. I’m going to bend. No more being stubborn I’ve learned in my life that no matter from me. If he insists that the long way is the how hard two people try at marriage, fastest way to the bypass from our house the woman always has to try the then I’ll just concede. I know how to pick hardest. It’s true! Men aren’t good at trying (unless there is a sport involved). my battles, and trust me, there are far more important battles that I could tend to. And Now men, hear me out: Marriage is like cheerleading; females consider it a maybe, just maybe, my attitude will catch on and he will bend a little without even sport, but males just consider it a silly realizing it. I won’t hold my breath though, thing females like to do. I’m not stupid. Men, don’t be mad at me, bless your I will still remain the person I am, and still hearts. We love you anyway. When we married you, we knew exactly what we have my opinions. I will simply state my case and rely on the fact that he will do what’s were getting into. If you couldn’t find best for us both. I think. the hamper before you got married, you sure as heck weren’t going to start Well, there’s my New Year’s resolution - to after the nuptials. lighten up, to give in a little. I hope he will still like me. I hope my head doesn’t pop off. Unfortunately for Scott I’m very stubborn. And painfully unfortunate for As corny as it seems, I really do like the idea me, Scott is even more stubborn. Boy do we butt heads! But I think that’s why of a New Year’s resolution. And I want to succeed at mine, so maybe for the sake of he likes me. succeeding I need to think of another one It’s not a serious problem; others even too.You know, as back-up. think it’s funny. We are sort of like I started 2011 as a married woman. And I ended it a married woman. So I think that’s a pretty good year! Whoever said their first year of marriage was perfect was delirious or drunk; or deliriously drunk!

Last year my resolution went really well. I resolved to only shop consignment or thrifty stores for my clothes. And I did it for a whole year!! I loved it so much that I’m continuing it into 2012. But there was something else that I’ve been thinking about for a few months now, and that’s changing our diets to gluten-free. Perhaps that will be easier than bickering with Scott over the fastest way to Greensboro. After investigating this this extremely delicate switch, and searching the Internet for insight I’ve realized that I need more time to prepare, and I need a Trader Joe’s closer to home than Chapel Hill. I’d love to hear from anyone who has chosen to be or must be on a gluten-free diet. But, back to the immediate resolution - since I’m still in the process of Habitual Behavior 101, and making real progress, I’ll continue to focus on that. I have certain things under control, while other things still need lots of work. I’ll tell you more about that in the February issue. OK, so to recap - in 2012 I’m going to stop bickering with Scott, eventually cut out gluten, and continue to teach the kids the value of life. Whew. I’ve got my work cut out for me this year. Have I taken on too much? Nah, I’m raising 5 kids, 2 dogs and a cat. Resolutions are meant to better your life and/or your health, right? I’ll make it work, and if I have to give up something it’ll definitely be the bickering. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.
