#COMEBACKCITY by Lee Vogler

During the last decade, leaders of the Dan River region took steps to revamp its economy that had been built around the declining industries of textile and tobacco. Those steps have paid off in a big way, laying the foundation for a very promising decade ahead. Danville’s River District has been a tremendous success, with the repurposing of historic buildings residential units and for locating, starting or growing businesses, including retail shops and services, restaurants and entertainment venues. In just a few years, the number of residents in the River District has grown from 200 to over 2,000. Recent projects from proven developers such as Ed Walker, as well as the Alexander Company, show that the momentum in the district is far from slowing. In 2019, Danville was recognized internationally by the Financial Times as one of the Top 10 micro cities for economic potential. Unemployment for the region fell to 4%, the lowest it had been in 20 years, and major companies like Morgan Olsen and Tyson Foods have recently called Danville home. The Dan River region is increasingly being heralded as a great place to live. In 2020, Danville was one of only ten cities to receive the All-America City award. This reflects the abundance of great parks found in the region, along with topnotch schools, some of which have consistently been ranked among the best in Virginia.

Not only a great place to live, the Dan River region is also quickly becoming a tourist destination, with the Blue Ridge Amphitheatre hosting music festivals that have drawn tens of thousands of people to the region. Also on the horizon is Caesars Virginia, to be in Danville’s Schoolfield District, and is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. There is a spirit of revival for the region that its citizens have fully embraced. The people of Danville are calling their home the #ComebackCity. It’s easy to see why. That comeback isn’t exclusive to the city alone, however. This entire region is experiencing a renaissance. C OMEVISITOU R TOWN.C OM • DANVIL L E, V I RGI N I A

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY SURGING by Arnold Hendrix Renderings courtesy of Caesar’s Entertainment

Economic development is the lifeblood of any community. Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, activity in Danville and the Dan River Region is as high as it has been in at least the past decade. More than 2,000 new jobs and $875 million in investments have been announced in the last year. Those numbers include the casino resort being developed in the city and Tyson Foods’ new facility that will be built just outside the city limits in the Cane Creek Centre industrial park. Caesars Entertainment recently shared official renderings for Caesars Virginia, its $500 million casino resort expected to break ground by the end of 2021. The resort will create 900 construction jobs, and 1,300 new operational jobs when it opens as anticipated in late 2023. “Caesars Virginia will be an economic driver for the region, both as a tourist and entertainment draw and

14

C O ME V I S I T O U R T OWN. COM • DANV I LLE, V I R GI NI A

through the more than a thousand good-paying jobs the resort will create,” said Anthony Carano, president and chief operating officer of Caesars Entertainment. “The people of Danville have entrusted us to build a world-class resort, and we look forward to proving that trust was well founded with an incredible resort worthy of the iconic Caesars brand.” The latest plans include 500 hotel rooms, a state-of-the-art casino floor, Caesars Sportsbook, World Series of Poker Room, new restaurant and entertainment offerings, and much more. In August, Governor Ralph Northam announced that Tyson Foods Inc., one of the world’s largest food companies, will invest $300 million to establish a cooked chicken plant that will create 376 jobs. Average annual salaries will be $40,000 to $45,000.

Mayor Alonzo Jones is excited that Tyson Foods will be part of the city’s future. “It is always great when a company decides to grow in our city and region. It is even better when it is a company as well-known and respected as Tyson Foods,” Jones said. The new facility will be used primarily for the production of premium quality, fully cooked Tyson brands, which include Any’tizer® Snacks and Chicken Nuggets. Groundbreaking is expected before the end of 2021, with project completion in early or mid-2023.

AeroFarms, megasite, tourism Earlier this year, Governor Northam and other state and local leaders joined AeroFarms executives to break ground ceremonially on a facility in the Cane Creek Centre that will be the world’s largest aeroponic vertical farm. AeroFarms is investing over $53 million and creating 92 year-round jobs at this indoor farm, which will serve the more than 1,000 food retailers in the region. The company has developed patented, award-winning indoor vertical farming technology that provides the perfect conditions for healthy plants to thrive, taking agriculture to a new level of precision, food safety, and productivity while using zero pesticides and up to 95% less water than traditional field farming. Other economic development announcements this year included Walraven, Making Everything Possible, Staunton River Plastics, and Kegerreis Digital Marketing, and a plant expansion at Intertape Polymer. Going forward, city and region leaders are busy marketing the Southern Virginia Megasite at Berry Hill, which is located just west of the city limits. The megasite is the state’s largest, and in July it achieved another certification milestone that will attract more potential developers. With this success, plans are being made to develop new housing and upgrade existing housing for the expected surge in the workforce. Pittsylvania County Administrator David Smitherman, speaking in September during a panel discussion before area business leaders, said, “We are at the place in our economic development program that we think strategically about ‘what happens when.’ What happens when we land the Tyson’s (Tyson Foods), Morgan Olson’s, and all these other great companies that will change the fabric of our employment base?… How do we adapt?” City Manager Ken Larking, who also was part of that panel discussion, talked about plans to create additional tourism staffing to promote tourism assets such as area racetracks, Smith Mountain Lake, the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex, and when it opens in 2023, the casino resort.

The Danville Office of Economic Development is the designated marketing organization for the city and region. The office is hiring a tourism manager who will build a tourism brand for the community and launch a tourism website and social media accounts.

Safe city, recreational opportunities, infrastructure upgrades The city and region also are making progress beyond economic development. Here are a few of the highlights: • Safe city: Danville crime numbers are at a 35-year low. The numbers are attributed to focused deterrence efforts and community partnerships. Recently, the city manager authorized a pay increase for police officers. “If you want to have the best police department, the best and most professional workers who are out there working in the community every day, you have to pay them appropriately,” said Larking. Starting salaries have increased about 25% to $45,333, which is the highest in the region, including cities such as Lynchburg, Roanoke, Martinsville and Greensboro, N.C. • County public safety: In Pittsylvania County, public safety highlights include the county’s first-year efforts as a provider of emergency medical services, construction of a public safety facility in Hurt, improved emergency medical response times and calls answered in the county, and a new fleet of cars and computers equipment for law enforcement. • Recreational opportunities: The Danville Parks and Recreation Department continues to offer full services, programs, and events, such as the farmers’ market and outdoor music and family festivals. The Riverwalk Trail and local parks are fully open. In August, the Danville Public Library and Smart Beginnings Danville Pittsylvania County officially opened the Danville Storywalk Trail, which was installed on the section of the Riverwalk Trail between American Legion Post 325 Field and the Dan River also known as the Upper Dan Daniel Memorial Park Trail Head. The Storywalk Trail features 20 signs displaying the pages of a storybook. Stories are changed monthly. • Mobile library: The Danville Public Library is offering new services, including an outreach vehicle that visits locations throughout the city to deliver materials, serve as a mobile internet hotspot, and act as an emergency relief vehicle during outages and crises. • Electric substation upgrades: Danville Utilities continues to upgrade its electric substations to increase reliability and reduce outages. In 2020, the Riverside and Schoolfield substations in Danville were upgraded. This year, upgrades to the Kentuck and Whitmell substations in Pittsylvania County are being completed. Upgrades to the Southside and Westover substations in the city and the White Oak substation in the county are scheduled in 2022. The new equipment will last for 30-plus years.

GRETNA Community spirit thrives throughout Gretna. Revitalization for a Greater Gretna, a group of visionaries, is helping to reboot Gretna without sacrificing any of its great history. Upon entering Gretna, you are welcomed by a sign that reads, “Gretna — A Railroad Village.” Rich in railroad history, Gretna was a link to the Lynchburg & Danville Railroad. In 1872, Jeremiah Talboot deeded a right-of-way to the Railroad, knowing the prosperity that would come to the Town via the railroad. Many trains passed through Gretna, which was then called Elba, including the Old 97, immortalized in the wreck of 1903. Gretna embraces the roots upon which the town was founded while strengthening the community with goals of moving forward in the future. The Town’s slogan, “Ain’t no big thing, but it’s growing” HY

COMMUNITY GARDENS Community gardens have sprouted throughout the city of Danville and more could be on the way. There are currently about a dozen in the city, with two of the most prominent ones being the one next to the Community Market downtown, and the one beside God’s Storehouse. The Danville Regional Foundation provided a $10,000 Make It Happen grant for the Community Market’s

garden in 2011. The garden at the Community Market on Craghead Street has 15 plots, and provides residents the opportunity to plant their own produce, get in touch with nature and teach their children about gardening. The Urban Farm at God’s Storehouse is a community farming space that works to increase the access of healthy food to area residents. Created in 2019,

the garden grows a variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the year that are donated directly to God’s Storehouse for distribution. The once empty lot now holds raised garden beds, a greenhouse, a fully stocked tool shed, and a composting facility. God’s Storehouse welcomes anyone to volunteer on the farm, no skills necessary.

The Riverwalk Trail:

Nature takes center stage at Danville’s Riverwalk Trail. It lays alongside the Dan River, providing a beautiful, scenic atmosphere for those who use the trail as a source of exercise, mediation, or even a place to spend quality time with their family. The preferred starting point of the trail is located at the Crossing of the Dan entrance in downtown Danville. Here you’ll get a glimpse of Danville’s storied past through the renovated architecture of the tobacco warehouses and the Amtrak Station located near the Danville Science Center. History comes to life as you cross a revived 1856

Located in Ringgold, VA is the locally beloved Richmond and Danville Rail-Trail, also known as the “Ringgold Trail.” This trail’s 5.5 miles are each rich in nature and history. The railroad routes, that are now trails, linked the confederate capital of Richmond with the Southside. Only Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, and the confederate army used this exact route when fleeing from Richmond nearing the end of the war. In 2001, parts of the now trail system, once rail road system, were given to Norfolk Southern Railway system. Currently, there are three trail heads all leading to some of Ringgold’s most beautiful hideaways. Those trailheads include: The Kerns Church Road trailhead, Ringgold Road trailhead, and the central trail head on Shawnee Road. These trails are very accessible for people of all ages and abilities. With accommodations for those with wheelchairs, the trails are made to be enjoyed by all. There is a vintage, red

Tandem Mobility: No bike? No problem. Danville has teamed with Tandem Mobility to offer a bike share program to their city. There are five rental locations along the Riverwalk. Those locations are Dan Daniel Memorial Park, the Train Station, the Crossing at the Dan, Main Street Plaza, and Biscuitville restaurant. There is a small fee of 3 dollars per hour. Mountain Biking: The Angler’s Ridge Trail Association (formerly known as The Southern Virginia Mountain Bike Association) and Danville Parks and Recreation partnered to build one of the longest single-track mountain bike trails in the region. Clocking in at over 30 miles, Angler’s Ridge is a series of stacked-loop trails that offer something

to all riders - from novice to pro. Skill level is taken into consideration when building trails. For beginners, the Riverside Drive trail is perfect. For more advanced riders, there are trails such as, Witchback with an 891-foot elevation change. Angler’s Ridge earned national recognition after being named the number one bike trail system in Virginia and one of the top 25 in the world by www.singletracks.com. The trails aren’t solely for biking, hikers and trail runners love the challenging terrain, set against a beautiful, natural backdrop of wooded hillsides and creeks just as well. The trail system is home to several annual races including the Green Legs, Hamstrings, and Patriot Challenge trail runs. The trails entwine with nature, giving riders and runners an exhilarating experience. A good quality of life is an important factor in choosing where to establish roots. In a 2015 study, the University of Minnesota determined that everyday access to nature approves the quality of life in older adults. If you’ve ever been on one of the trails and witnessed children playing, it’s a safe bet to say access to nature approves the quality in everyone.

24 Reid Street, Chatham VA 24531 • Monday – Saturday | 11am - 2pm • Sunday | 2 - 4pm Additional Hours: By appointment for Group Tours, call 434-793-5644 Many Americans assume that rural communities are endangered and hanging on by a thread—suffering from outmigration, ailing schools, and overused land. But that perception is far from true in many areas. Many rural Americans work hard to sustain their communities. Why should revitalizing the rural places left behind matter to those who remain, those who left, and those who will come in the future? All Americans benefit from rural America’s successes. We can learn great things from listening to those stories. There is much more to the story of rural America!

Over 5500 Veterans are honored with an individual brick on the Memorial Walkway located in the Dan Daniel Park, River Point Drive, Danville. Open year-round, dawn to dusk.

SOUTH BOSTON SPEEDWAY

THE WHITE OAK MOUNTAIN MEADERY

434.572.4947 Dubbed “America’s Hometown Track” South Boston Speedway has been attracting drivers from across Virginia and the nation for 48 years. The history of South Boston Speedway is legendary as are the legions of drivers who have raced here. Racing begins in April and runs through early November. South Boston has produced a number of drivers who have gone on to find success in NASCAR’S national series.

TOMAHAWK MILL WINERY 434.432.1063 (appt) In 1888, a few miles from Chatham, Virginia, James Anderson opened his Tomahawk Creek grist mill to serve local farmers. One hundred years later, the mill was closed, and the first grapes were planted on the hill above the mill pond. The first Chardonnay vintage was produced in 1990.

TOWN OF CHATHAM WALKING TOUR 434.432.8153 Established as a town in 1777 during the American Revolution, Chatham features domestic Victorian and post-Victorian architecture. Walking tour brochures available at the Town of Chatham or on the web site.

WRECK OF THE OLD 97 & OLD 97 MURAL 434.793.4636 On September 27, 1903, a Southern Express train crashed in Danville killing eleven persons and injuring six. The event inspired the famous ballad of the same name. Marker is located on U.S. 58 between Locust Lane and North Main Street at the train crash site. The Old 97 is depicted in Danville’s first historic mural which was completed in December 2005 by mural artist and illustrator Wes Hardin.

YATES TAVERN The only block-house standing in Pittsylvania County and possibly the state, Yates Tavern is located on U.S. 29 business about a fourth of a mile south of Gretna. It was built around 1750 and sheltered travelers in what was then a western wilderness. The Yates family came to Pittsylvania County earlier than 1767 when both John Yates and John Yates Jr. were listed among the first tithables. It is not clear which of the Yates family members built the tavern.

is an enthusiastic, high-school English teacher who loves his career and is surrounded by teens and co-workers. On the weekends, however, the Halifax County native and Danville resident confesses to having a secret identity. He is Mr. Adventurer, a young day tripper who documents his escapades on Instagram @coreyrunswild. (That username also refers to the fact that he’s a runner.) and jumping into his car. Corey travels alone except for maybe taking a good book for company, explaining nonchalantly, “I’ll make friends after I get there” —wherever there might be. “I usually find the downtown historic district of a new city the most interesting because

that’s where the life, culture, and real personality of a city is located,” he says. Depending on how hungry he is after arriving at his destination, Corey might grab a bite to eat and then, “The

adventure unravels,” he says with the excitement of anticipation. Why does he do this? “To escape and to be inspired. It gives me a new perspective on Danville,” Corey comments. “I might see something and think Danville could do this!” For example, he views the new plans for the White Mill as very similar to the American Tobacco Campus, a historic tobacco factory complex and national historic district located in Durham, North Carolina. After a moment of reflection, Corey adds, “In fact, my day trips might decrease because some of my favorite things in other cities will now be here in Danville.”

SOUTH BOSTON Downtown South Boston is in the midst of a growth spurt. A combination of public and private investment—not any single person, business or project—has spurred a renaissance in downtown South Boston. The Town is showing signs of renewed vitality and has recently seen interest in new restaurants, specialty shops, and entertainment businesses. The Prizery continues to be a gem of vital artistic and cultural contributions in downtown and the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market is a great gathering spot this time of year for juicy cantaloupes, fresh garden vegetables, and some of the finest produce that local vendors have to offer, as well as meats and baked goods. A popular art project in downtown is a Fire Hydrant Walking Tour. Each fire hydrant has become a whimsical piece of public art as you learn about some of South Boston’s history, and the people behind it. Downtown South Boston has become a hotspot for those seeking downtown living. New Brick Historic Lofts offers market-rate housing and preserves a piece of architectural tobacco heritage that is unique and authentic to South Boston. Destination Downtown South Boston was successful in saving and developing this structure. All 27 loft apartments stay full.
