Community Life
Danville
Reimaging and revitalization are two words synonymous with Danville as it continues to move forward. Once known for its rich textile and tobacco industries, Danville has a thumb on the pulse of ever-changing technology. Embracing technological advancements make Danville an attractive location for start-up businesses as well as established companies. Danville is the regional hub that connects many communities throughout Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina. Private schools, a community college, and a private university provide strong educational options for children. This river city is a nature-lover’s dream. Danville’s Riverwalk Trail offers a wide variety of
healthy, outdoor activities including peaceful walks along the river and mountain biking at Angler’s Ridge. These biking trails were named the best in Virginia and top 25 in the world. There are many other parks with amenities such as tennis courts and baseball fields located throughout the city. Speaking of baseball, when the fever hits, you can catch the Danville Braves at Legion Field in Dan Daniel Park. There are several museums ranging in subject from Science to Natural History to provide a fun and informative day for the whole family. Danville has a “city” atmosphere with a comforting small-town feel. Close relationships and a general caring for your neighbor’s well-being are just a few of the special traits Danville offers its

residents. There is a “helping hand” philosophy that makes Danville a positive and strong community.

approximately 1,300 residents year-round. Aside from the quiet life, two nationally recognized college preparatory schools, Hargrave Military Academy and Chatham Hall are located in Chatham. With respected private and public schools and a growing Boys and Girls Club, Chatham provides some of the best resources for children. Chatham breathes a smalltown life from a caring heart. With an illustrious history and stunning architecture, the Town is the perfect landing for those looking for the peaceful life.
Gretna
Rich in railroad history, Gretna was a link to the Lynchburg & Danville Railroad. In 1872, Jeremiah Talboot deeded a right-of-way to the Railroad, knowing the prosperity that would come to the Town via the railroad. Many trains passed through Gretna, which was then called Elba, including the Old 97, immortalized in the wreck of 1903.
Gretna embraces the roots upon which the town was founded while strengthening the community with goals of moving forward in the future. The Town’s slogan, “Ain’t no big thing, but it’s growing” embodies the forward-thinking philosophy. Community spirit thrives throughout Gretna. Revitalization for a Greater Gretna, a group of visionaries, is helping to reboot Gretna without sacrificing any of its great history. Upon entering Gretna, you are welcomed by a sign that reads, “Gretna — A Railroad Village.” It’s just one of the ways that shows residents loving a community enough to reinvent it.
Hurt
Hurt is tucked away in the northern-most tip of Pittsylvania County. This quiet town offers a rural setting with the conveniences of larger cities just minutes away. Hurt is close to an airport, several private schools, and has four colleges within thirty miles. The Town has

a lot to offer the youth of the area — an excellent public school systems and the Altavista YMCA are not far away. Hurt is also only a short drive from Smith Mountain Lake, a great place to escape for the weekend.

Imagine – No reimagine How far you could go here
Community Spirit
Reimagining has become the lifeblood of who we are, our way of life, and our way of welcoming visitors Mayor John Gilstrap has seen much change since 1972 when he and his wife, Janice, moved to Danville. Textiles and tobacco no longer dominate the economy as they did for decades throughout the 1900s. The clatter of looms weaving cloth in the Schoolfield community has gone silent. So too has the chant of the auctioneers selling tobacco in the World’s Best Tobacco Market. However, what he sees today has him encouraged about the city that Danville is shaping up to be. Today’s economy has transitioned to one with a diversified, forward-looking mix of businesses.
“When I speak to groups and at events, I like to talk about the Danville spirit that exists today,” says Gilstrap, who in 2010 was first elected by citizens to City Council and in July 2016 chosen by Council members to serve as mayor. That spirit requires the city adapt to changes and challenges that come its way by taking a step back from a situation or an established way of doing things and ask, “Is there a better way? Let’s reimagine this.” That spirit led the city in 2012 to gain a new status as home to one of the nation’s most powerful computers, a next-generation Cray XMT2 supercomputer. It is located in a building on Bridge Street, directly across from Averett University’s Riverview campus. That spirit has led the city to find success in precision machining.
22 CO M E V I S I T O U R T O W N .com • D anvi l l e: Y esterd ay, T oday, Tomorrow
The ability to provide an ongoing supply of precision metalworkers was in part the determining incentive for Overfinch North America and Kyocera SGS Precision Tool to announce this summer that they would locate operations here with a total investment of more than $15 million. That spirit is evident in the transformation of the city’s River District, which consists of two historic districts — the Tobacco Warehouse District and downtown — tied together by the Dan River. In 2016, Danville marked the sixth year of a development plan for the district. Today, the River District boasts a new look and vibe thanks to added amenities and repurposing of buildings. Private investment is taking place as city leaders had hoped, and it is outpacing public investment by threefold. Continued to Page 26
The city’s economy continues to strengthen. Revenue from local sales and meals taxes continue to grow. The value of building activity in 2016 far exceeded activity the previous year. The unemployment rate in 2016 fell to its lowest mark since 2007 and less than half from its highest point six years ago. D a nvil l e: Y esterd ay, Today, Tomorrow • COMEVISITOUR TOWN.com 23

To capture the spirit of the changes taking place and to send a clear message within and outside the Danville community about what makes the district special, a brand was developed that uses the tagline slogan: “Danville River District: Reimagine That.” This same spirit also is at work throughout the city and the region. It is the spirit of reinvention that led to the establishment of The Launch Place. This group looks for investment opportunities and offers a full range of services for entrepreneurs to be successful. It is the spirit of reinvention that led to the Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness to be established at Averett University.
This center allows students to learn from firsthand experiences in the community, bringing their liberal arts education to life both inside and outside the classroom. The spirit of reinvention also is guiding city government operations. In early 2015, The City of Danville launched a redesign of its website – danvilleva. gov. The new design vividly displays images of the city, accommodates screens of all sizes and provides citizens with access to many types of data in a way never before available. It takes government transparency to a new level. That is the spirit of reinvention at work. The Fire Department maintains international accreditation

for excellence in fire service. To become accredited, the department invited the most intense scrutiny available. The standards are high. Few departments achieve accreditation, so what this means is the department is among the best of the best. That is the spirit that drives Danville. The Police Department continues to be ahead of the curve in technical application and strategic thinking. The department implemented use of body-worn cameras a full four years before the national call to equip all officers with such devices. The department now has 116 cameras and the associated infrastructure in place to cover all officers, supervision and civilian Continued to Page 33

Telly Tucker, director of the Danville Office of Economic Development, says the improvement in the unemployment rate reflects several things. “One, it helps that the national economy is improving,” Tucker said. “Locally, the City of Danville, Pittsylvania County, Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce and the Virginia
Workforce Center are doing a better job of working with each other with regard to opportunities available and employer needs. We have a team approach that is working well. We also are focusing in partnership with Danville Community College in getting workers retrained with skills applicable to the jobs of today. In addition, the Chamber’s efforts in creating a workforce ready community have really helped. The workforce ready program provides training in soft skills.”

The Dan River Region is a great place to call home. It is a region that has managed to preserve its rich history while simultaneously embracing the new age of technology; a region with “big city” conveniences and “small town” ambience. It is a great place to build a career, raise a family or retire. Consider yourself warned: Once you experience the heart of the Region, you may never want to leave. Variety. If variety is the spice of life, then the Dan River Region’s housing market is seasoned to perfection. Whatever your taste in housing, the Dan River Region provides a host of choices: Millionaires’ Row along Danville’s Main Street with its beautiful homes of Victorian and Edwardian architecture; a renovated loft in our “Reimagined” River District with a spectacular view of the Dan River; or a chalet overlooking a beautiful lake shore. It’s all here! Convenience. In the Dan River Region you are only minutes away from everything! Whether you are headed to work, the grocery store, school, your place of worship, work, a ball game, or the movies, your destination is only a “hop, skip, and jump” away. Great Neighborhoods. Do you want to live where you can borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbor, walk your dog, where kids play in the sprinkler in the summer, and catch fireflies in the back yard? There are a great number of subdivisions throughout the city and county to choose from and one just right for your family.
Other convenient subdivisions include Southwyck Farms, located on Danville’s south side, a short distance from the Virginia-North Carolina border. This neighborhood offers homes built in the seventies to the present. New construction opportunities are also available. Many newcomers like this subdivision because of its convenience to the Danville Expressway. Adjacent to Southwyck Farms, Grove Park offers classy and affordable housing opportunities.
Great Value & Variety. The Dan River Region offers homes in a variety of styles and vintages, with some of the best real estate prices in the country, starting well below $100,000. Community Giving
The Danville Area Humane Society The Danville Area Humane Society was organized in 1975. Although the programs have grown through the 40 years of service to the community, our mission statement has remained the same: Our purpose is to promote the welfare and humane treatment of all animals: mammals, fowl, reptiles, and fish; to prevent cruelty and promote kindness, respect, and reverence for all forms of life; and to this end, provide for the rescue and temporary maintenance of lost, strayed, abandoned animals; find responsible, loving homes for as many as possible; investigate acts of cruelty, abandonment and neglect; strive to decrease pet overpopulation through spay/ neuter programs; disseminate the principles of humaneness through educational programs and through these efforts contribute to the creation of a truly humane society.
Since 1984, we have operated the animal shelter for the City of Danville. We average receiving 5,000 animals, including all companion animals, livestock, and exotic pets. Our large group of volunteers offer enrich activities for the shelter animals. Four years ago, we opened our E. Stuart James Grant Adoption Center. We offer an aggressive spay/ neuter program to residents of Danville and Pittsylvania County. We also work with animal control officers in each of those localities to provide a wide range of services for stray, injured, or lost animals. Through the years God’s Storehouse has expanded. Today, more than 100 local congregations, numerous civic groups, schools, businesses, and individuals volunteer time and money to support the mission of God’s Storehouse. Out of the Darkness
For the second year in a row, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is helping to raise suicide awareness in our area through the Danville-Pittsylvania County Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk. Half of all monies raised through Out of the Darkness will filter back into the community through programs, resources, educational literature, trainings and much more. LeAnne Hardy, Chair of the DanvillePittsylvania County Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk, says the group has been steadily utilizing the resources purchased with last year’s
fundraiser dollars. “We have three billboards in our area now that focus on suicide awareness education, which is amazing. I’ve lived here all my live and never seen that before. We also purchased the More Than Sad DVD series, that is designed to target the youth population and presented it to 40 Danville City School employees last summer. That’s just a start. This resource would benefit all school personnel, from teachers to cafeteria workers and bus drivers.” With this year’s fundraising efforts, the group plans to send 3-4 people from our area to Grief Support Facilitators Training for Suicide Loss. “This will equip us with the resources we need to host Suicide Loss Grief Support Groups in Danville, Pittsylvania County and surrounding areas,” Hardy says. But Danville-Pittsylvania County Out of the Darkness is so much more than just a fundraiser walk each year. This group is dedicated to supporting at-risk groups in any way it can. Last year the group partnered with Union Church to host the “Cold Weather Cook Out” to support those who are experiencing homelessness. Out of Darkness worked with Moffett Memorial to bring the “Community Baby Shower” and are diligently working with the local VA Office and VFW to host a myriad of Veteran Suicide Awareness Projects. “It is amazing to see the hearts of our supporters at work. They all share the same desire to make a difference in our community and give of themselves, expecting nothing in return. Since day one, they have never let me down,” Hardy concludes. The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army’s mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ without discrimination, and help human needs in his name. With that policy in mind the local branch uses all means to accomplish that goal. Using funds generated from the local Family Store and various other fundraisers, the Salvation Army is able to help people’s needs within the community. Using the money given at Christmas through the kettles the Salvation Army is able to purchase toys for children in the area. Outside of that, the money left over goes to other various programs throughout the year which return the community. The Salvation Army has an unwavering willingness to help those in times of trouble. When you donate to the Family Store at 2905 Riverside Drive, you help those when they need it most. Many times when a home is overcome by fire or another disaster people turn to the Salvation Army for assistance. With all of the ways that the Salvation Army gives back to the community, they are only able to do it through community support. Donations enable the Salvation Army to offer programs and assistance to our community. For more information on how to help visit www. virginiasalvationarmy.org/ danvilleva/ or call 434.792.3963.

Community Strong by Lee Vogler
2016 was a year full of successes and challenges for Danville. As we head into 2017, we must all work collaboratively to build a safer, stronger Danville. One of the ways to do this is continue to diversify and strengthen our economy. With partners like DCC and Averett, we have begun building an educated workforce pipeline with graduates being prepared for the jobs of today and tomorrow, while also realizing that not everyone needs a four-year degree. There are many jobs available through vocational education. That is why this pipeline is so critical to the recruitment of industries that will bring the high-paying jobs our region needs. Education, from kindergarten through college, is essential to Danville’s long-term growth. Through all our challenges, Danville has still marched forward. We are a better city today than just a handful of years ago. Our River District has grown from 200 residents to over 2,000 in just five years, and has seen over $110 million in private
sector investment. This past year, our region had twice as many jobs available as the year prior. Our unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in a decade. And 2017 will offer even more improvements. Danville will be launching its first bike share program, akin to those in Chattanooga and Washington DC, allowing people to rent bicycles ondemand, through kiosks similar to Redbox. We will also roll out the Mainline Trolley service, that will connect people from the Averett area through the River District into Neapolis and back for a minimal fee. Currently, plans are being made for a Riverfront Park in the River District that will include a splash pad, beach area, kayaking and other amenities. Several more restaurants, breweries, and businesses will be opening. After leading the effort to pass statewide legislation to create the framework for such a program, Danville will become the first locality in Virginia to have a Land Bank entity,

helping eliminate blighted properties, while saving the taxpayers money. This is part of a larger effort to make Danville a more attractive city to live in. Danville was touted for many years as “a great place to raise a family.” Our goal is to make that statement unquestionably true once again. It’s truly an exciting time in our city, filled with infinite possibilities. May the images and words in this book inspire you to write your own chapter in Danville’s history. There has never been a greater opportunity to make a difference in our city than what we have today. I’ve often said that I don’t believe Danville’s best days are written in history books or on the wall of a museum. I believe they still lie in the hopes and dreams of our people. And I believe with all my heart our best days are still ahead. So, let’s work together. Let’s move forward together. If we do, we will succeed together, and create a future that is even greater than our past.

Brewed Awakening opened in Danville’s River District mid-August 2015. The coffee shop is located on the first floor of the Continental building across from the Community Market on Craghead Street. Not only is Brewed Awakening a coffee shop, it also features twelve flavors of ice cream, a full lunch menu featuring homemade soups, sandwiches, wraps and a convenient selection of locally written books and gently used fiction. Owners, Bonnie and John Hale, started the shop in 2004 in Martinsville, Virginia. The shop started as a bookstore with small coffee bar called Binding Time Café. Due to customer demand,
the shop quickly evolved into a larger coffee shop with a small bookstore. Throughout eleven years of business, the shop continued to outgrow its space. With the desire to expand more, the Hales moved the quaint coffee shop to Danville and renamed it Brewed Awakening. The shop has more than doubled its space since reinventing itself in the burgeoning River District. The unique space blends the original hardware of the old warehouse with the contemporary coffee shop. The Hales hope Brewed Awakening will become a destination for ice cream, food and fun…and, of course, freshly brewed gourmet coffee.

Nikki’s Family Restaurant and Gini’s Family Restaurant
Nikki Fouts had a dream of wanting to more than just a job. She combined her passion for food with the desire to have a family business and Gini’s Family Restaurant opened six years ago. Nikki’s Family Restaurant opened a year later. “My inspiration of wanting to make a positive impact and bring jobs to our community is endless as I continue this journey,” Fouts says. Nikki brings a flare of home cooking to her restaurants. She adds, “Our menu ranges from everyday fresh made meats and veggies, meat loaf, barbecue chicken, handmashed creamed potatoes, string beans...to our mouthwatering signature burgers, fresh never frozen 7 ounce hand-patted meat.” Fouts is quick to point out the best part of the meal—madefrom-scratch desserts. She continues, “Banana pudding, chocolate chess pie, and the
most delicious moist cakes you’ll devour!” Every restaurant has to have that special something that keeps people coming back.
By 2015, Primo Pizza was a favorite pizza spot for locals. After being in business seven years, owner Mohamed Srioua thought it was time to expand the menu. He chose to add a taste of the Mediterranean. “The Mediterranean diet is one of the best and healthiest out there now. Through research I learned that Danville had an interest in Mediterranean food.”

Srioua’s vision to bring the Mediterranean to Danville began with a diverse menu encompassing the entire Mediterranean Sea. “We serve dishes from Spain, Italy, Greece, Northern Africa, and the Middle East,” Srioua says. Along with dishes such as paella and tabbouleh, Primo offers a variety of delicious desserts including truffle cake and baklava.
person curb service and a menu that hasn’t changed in over fifty years, Mama Possum’s is a must pit stop for area foodies. The building that houses Mama Possum’s was built in the mid-sixties. In 1999, Eddie Blachura purchased the restaurant. “I had worked with Rockola Café for over ten years when the opportunity to buy the landmark became available. I couldn’t pass it up, so I decided to give it a try,” Blachura says.
Srioua hopes to continue expanding the Mediterranean taste through the area. “We have people travel forty-five minutes to an hour to satisfy their craving for variety.” And Primo has you covered when it comes to variety with a menu offering everything from pizza and subs to signature Mediterranean tour dishes.
Mama Possum’s offers a menu of American favorites including cheeseburgers, award-winning hot dogs with homemade Cole slaw and chili, salads, and hand-dipped milkshakes. The Cole slaw is available for purchase in seven different grocery stores.

every patron receives excellent service,” Hairston says. Bro Pete’s is a success story. Hairston plans to open at least four more locations in the future.
Joe & Mimma’s
Joe & Mimma’s is nearing its fortieth anniversary. Owner Mimma Brooks purchased the
restaurant from her brother and since has been helping people to create wonderful dining memories. The atmosphere is welcoming and for patrons, Joe & Mimma’s offers more of a family dinner experience than a night out at the restaurant. The menu is made up of a wide variety of Italian delicacies. Lasagna and chicken dishes are favorites. A well-stocked salad bar keeps people coming back for seconds. Brooks points out that seafood is a popular choice among visitors. She says, “We change the seafood menu weekly to make sure our customers are served the freshest options.” Brooks adds that she purchases many fresh ingredients locally from the community market. Brooks attributes a diversified menu and a true caring for customers as keys to Joe & Mimma’s longevity. Looking to the future she hopes to keep the business in the family. Speaking of family, regulars view Mimmi and her husband, Randy, as family. Many of them give her a hug after satisfying meals.

for Advanced Learning and Research
The Institute
The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research is a beacon for Southern Virginia. The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) serves all Virginia; however, most of the Institute’s efforts are focused within the Southern Virginia region which includes the counties of Patrick, Franklin, Henry, Pittsylvania, Halifax, and Mecklenberg along with the cities of Martinsville and Danville. IALR is setup to leverage and broker resources for Southern Virginia. Several examples of this “catalyst-like” approach include: the opening of The Gene Haas Center for Integrated Machining (Capstone), a record number of STEM Mobile Learning Lab participants (over 10,000 in 2015), serving as the host sites for the Governor’s First AgBio
Conference and the U.S. EPA’s National Conference on Phytoremediation, and actively leading multiple research projects with regional growers, entrepreneurs, and existing industry. The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research serves the region and precipitates positive change while focusing on four key areas: advanced learning opportunities focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), applied research, workforce development, and economic development. Applied Research: The Research Department includes six PhD scientists and six technicians focused on applied research projects based on feedback from regional growers, entrepreneurs, and
existing industry. Collaborations include: • Atlativista Phytoremediation Projects and EPA Conference • VDACS Grant to help improve grape health and growth for the growing viticulture industry • Task Order with Dr. Moore at Virginia Tech around new development of a packaging polymer • VDACS grant to help improve and strengthen the Asian pear market in Virginia The Department has also worked hard to increase awareness of our organization and research by actively participating in statewide and national organizations. • Hosted Governor’s First AgBio Conference • Hosted First EPA Conference on Phytoremediation Continued to Page 105

Learning opportunities for people of all ages continue to focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The fourth annual STEM-H Summit was a success with more than 455 attendees. The STEM Mobile Learning Lab advances K-12 science, technology, engineering and math education by providing quality, hands-on activities for students. Students and educators within IALR’s service region enjoy a high level of exposure to STEM education when they board the STEM Mobile Learning Lab. The lab hosts students at IALR and also travels around visiting schools, neighborhoods, organizations, and community events. During 2016, IALR’s STEM Mobile Learning Lab visited 90 sites with 7,606 participants. Conference Services: The Institute’s Conference Services positively impacts the local and regional economy by supporting regional, state-wide, and national events in Danville, Virginia. In 2016, 23,361 guests attended 494 events at the Institute.
Southern Virginia Regional Alliance (SVRA): The Institute continues its commitment to a strategic focus on economic development through its partnership with and leadership of the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance (SVRA) to promote Southern Virginia both nationally and globally. Collaborative Partnerships: Global Center for Automotive Performance Simulation (GCAPS): The Institute continues to partner with GCAPS in vehicle related research at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in Alton, VA. As the premier force and moment tire test facility, GCAPS specializes in testing to complement activities performed by global tire and vehicle manufacturers. GCAPS also serves as IALR’s primary industry voice as the Advanced Learning department looks to develop a career pathway in engineering that leads to advanced degrees for Southern Virginia. Gene Haas Center for Integrated Machining: The Gene Haas Center for Integrated Machining is a progressive precision machining training model that answers industry expressed needs for a highly skilled 21st century workforce. The program is a partnership between IALR and Danville Community College. A key component of this project is a revolutionary concept that incorporates workplace experiential learning in an educational setting by enabling students to train in a full-scale manufacturing work flow cell to support a realistic, fullyintegrated learning experience. This first-of-its-kind model of immersive workforce training is derived from a partnership between business, industry, and academia. The program aims to integrate a “real-world” lean flow-cell manufacturing environment with such skills as tool management, advanced testing and measurement, electrical discharge machining,
computer numerically controlled grinding, computer numerically controlled milling, computer numerically controlled turning, and business processes.

Dan River Region Collaborative: The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research provides project management services and serves as the fiscal agent for the Dan River Region Collaborative. The Dan River Region Collaborative was founded in 2008 to address workforce development in the Dan River Region of Virginia. Utilizing a sector strategy approach, the Collaborative promotes regional partnerships of employers, educators, workforce developers and other stakeholders to address the skills needs of regional employers. Within the industry partnerships, the Collaborative’s efforts focus on capacity building, systems change, and policy advocacy. One of the Collaborative’s most significant projects is the Career ChoICE SOVA Youth Expo. Over 250 regional employers and volunteers prepare over 70 hands-on activities to engage middle and high school students and expose them to career opportunities available throughout the region. The twoday event serves approximately 4,000 students from seven school divisions. Career ChoICE highlights existing opportunities so that students, early on, will express a desire to stay in the region, based on an informed career decision with a clear understanding about the skills they need, what levels of education are required and the salaries they can expect. More importantly, this is an opportunity for the region to begin an intentional effort to build a pipeline of students in strategic sectors that are aligned with economic development interests. The Parks of Danville
While the essentials of life have changed drastically in the last 100 years, one thing has certainly remained constant — the fastest way to a healthier and happier community is through play. Fred Rogers said it best, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” The same goes for adults. Whether taking a break from business, looking for a way to relax, or trying to exercise a healthier you, Danville Parks and Recreation is your gateway to activity. With over 680 acres of parks and trails, 25 athletic fields, 23 playgrounds, 25 picnic sites and shelters, 30 miles of mountain bike trails, 9 miles of Riverwalk Trail, a skate park, a dog park, 2 disc golf courses, a ropes course, a zip line, 2 libraries, and over 2,000 programs and events, there are certainly plenty of opportunities within the city limits.
Perhaps one of the most accessible and fastest growing attractions the department has to offer is the Riverwalk Trail, which extends over 9 miles along the historic Dan River. The multi-purpose greenway connects four parks to multiple businesses, public places, and the newly renovated River District. Home to an array of special events, foot races, and undisturbed wildlife, the trail sees over 150,000 people annually. The Riverwalk Trail plays an important part in the health, wellness, and social aspects of Danville. Many people use this trail as part of their everyday routine while many more travel from around the region to enjoy it on the weekends. Clean, well-maintained parks and public spaces are vital to our community. The Riverwalk is just one of the many amenities maintained by Parks and Recreation. On any given day, the playgrounds at Dan Daniel, Ballou Park, Pumpkin Creek,
and Grove Parks are bursting at the seam with families enjoying their day while the open spaces within the park system and along the river play home to picnics, parents with strollers, bicyclists, runners, walkers, dog lovers, and more. The Department of Parks and Recreation also boasts over 2,000 recreation programs a year and services all ages from preschoolers to seniors. All-inclusive, the department also operates one of the few community-based therapeutic programs in the state. Many of the programs are free to the public and are accessible by all families in the region. Parks and Recreation is a great place for young adults to start their working career with summer jobs and seasonal positions. From week-long summer camps to special events, Danville Parks and Recreation has the

Southern Virginia Mountain Bike Association and Danville Parks and Recreation partnered to build one of the longest single track mountain bike trails in the region. Clocking in at over 30 miles, Angler’s Ridge is a series of stacked-loop trails that offer something to all riders -
from novice to pro. Skill level is taken into consideration when building trails. For beginners, the Riverside Drive trail is perfect. For more advanced riders, there are trails like Witchback which has an 891 foot elevation change. The trails entwine with nature to give riders an exhilarating experience. Shelter, picnic spots, and restrooms are located at the trailhead at Angler’s Park. Angler’s Ridge earned national recognition after being named the number one bike trail system in Virginia and one of the top 25 in the world by www. singletracks.com. Danville Family YMCA
The Danville Family YMCA is a state-of-the-art facility. The Y moved to the new location overlooking the Dan River in 2014 and boasts many enhancements over its previous location including impressive upgrades such as a pool that is 93 percent larger. The pool isn’t the only amenity which received an upgrade. The basketball court is 33 percent larger. The added space allows members to run multiple games at once. There is also an indoor walking track above the basketball court. The Wellness Center is 88 percent larger and equipped with over 100 ultramodern pieces of fitness equipment. The Y has three group exercise rooms and offers three different group exercise classes at a time. There is also a multi-purpose room, with a kitchen, for area groups to host meetings. The Danville Family YMCA has a service called Child Watch that allows for supervision of 22 children at one time. There is a teen loft which provides teens their own space for after
school activities and during the summer. The YMCA truly understands the importance of gearing our youth down the correct path. Each year, the Y gives away over 100,000 dollars in scholarships. Scholarships are based on household income. The Y offers scholarships for all its youth programs. Some of the programs aimed toward the youth include, basketball, indoor soccer, swim lessons, cheerleading, Pop Warner football, and summer sports camps. For individuals nearing retirement age, an active lifestyle is as important as ever. The Y has programs to cater to retirees including senior walking classes, yoga, water aerobics and rehab, Silver Sneakers, and pickleball. The Danville Family YMCA just isn’t a workout facility. It focuses on more than simply your physical health and looks to strengthen your ties to the community. Through the volunteer programs, Y
programs, and group exercise classes the Y strives to not only make your experience at the gym a more enjoyable one, but also to introduce you to other like-minded people and form friendships that may carry over outside of the gym. At the center of the Y are three core values — youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or you’re looking for a place where your children can learn and play, the Y has something for everyone. The Danville Family YMCA takes its role in the community seriously. It wants to be a difference in the community and has the tools to do it. Four things — caring, honesty, respect, and responsibly — are instilled in every program the Danville Family YMCA offers. It so happens that these four things are also the glue that binds a strong community. Membership Info: You can register online at www.ymcadanville.org or at the YMCA front desk.

In fact, Galileo was the only public high school in the Commonwealth of Virginia to receive this award. “Considering that we are the first high school in Virginia to receive this award since 2012, speaks to how difficult it is to win and what an honor this is for Danville Public Schools,” Principal Jay Lancaster said. “This award validates the
dedication and hard work of our remarkable faculty, our division that sends us students prepared to learn, and our parents that are supportive of the mission of Galileo Magnet High School.” Also in 2014, The Daily Beast recognized Galileo as one of the country’s top high schools. Danville Public Schools are gaining a reputation throughout the nation as a place for outstanding schools. In 2013, Forest Hills Elementary School was awarded a National Blue Ribbon. These awards show the level of commitment staff have to the education of all students within Danville Public Schools. Education is known to play a key role in economic
development for a region, and Danville Public Schools have embraced this notion wholeheartedly, as they continue to expand courses that are directly tied to workforce development, through partnerships with Danville Community College. As the City of Danville continues to transform and revitalize its regional economy, the school system will play a vital role in that transformation, by providing an educated workforce that will attract industries to the area. It’s been said that education is the passport the future, and as schools like Galileo and Forest Hills have proven, Danville’s future is bright.

Adult Education
For many people, finishing high school wasn’t an option. Life got in the way and high school fell to the bottom of the priority list. But as we get older, we all realize the importance of education. The Danville Public Schools offer a wide range of offerings designed to prepare adults, 18 & older, to move forward in their lives to job training, post-secondary education, and employment. Few job training programs or jobs are available without a high school credential. Adult High School Diplomas and GED Certificates are accepted by regional training institutions and area businesses. Averett University
Founded in 1859 as a place for women to obtain an education, Averett University continues to educate and support young men and women from around the world — students who will become future leaders in the Commonwealth, their home states, and in a global community. Over the last 150 plus years, Averett has been a forerunner in innovative programs. The University offers degree programs in equestrian studies, aeronautics, nursing, and athletic training, among others. In the 1980s, Averett recognized the demand for educating working adults and created what is now its Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program. The GPS Program offers bachelor’s degrees in business administration, nursing, criminal justice, and leadership and master’s degrees in business administration and education. Classes are offered online and at select campus locations for business programs in order to better fit a working adult’s schedule. The program is available statewide, with satellite campus locations in
the Danville, Richmond and Tidewater regions, as well as at the Roanoke Higher Education Center and Marine Corps Base Quantico. To date, over 8,000 GPS alumni have advanced their careers with Averett. While the University’s main focus is to educate its students and prepare them for their futures, it realizes the importance of participating in the local community and reaching out to the region as well. Averett makes sure its students participate in community service projects throughout the year, with students working with such organizations as Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, God’s Storehouse, Boys and Girls Club, and Special Olympics. Averett is one of the area’s leaders in providing cultural opportunities. Every year, the University hosts an arts series for its students and the surrounding community called Arts@Averett. The series features a variety of performances, lectures, and theatre productions. Past performances and lecturers have included author Sharyn McCrumb; pianist
Elyane Laussade; American Shakespeare Center; Richmond Ballet; the Averett Singers; abd student art shows. “We believe it’s very important to introduce our students and the community at large to cultural arts,” said Averett Professor Richard Breen. “Our arts series represents a wide variety of events including authors, astronauts, actors, Tuskegee Airmen and musicians of all sorts.” Averett’s Theatre Department began offering a Theatre for Young People Series in 1994 to introduce live theatre to the community’s children. More than 15 productions, including “Nick Tickle, Fairy Tale Detective” and “Seussical the Musical” have been performed for area school children. The theatre department, which performs three to four shows every year, has also performed “Streetcar Named Desire” and “Comedy of Errors.” In addition, the University boasts 16 NCAA Division III athletic teams after announcing the
