F RO M T HE e d i tor Well, 2014 is here. A new year presents a clean slate for us to change, or build on things, from the previous year. Each year I make a few resolutions that I’m confident I’ll keep and usually by March, I’ve not held true to them. I’m not alone. During an experiment, psychologist, Richard Wiseman, discovered that 52 percent of people are confident in their ability to follow through with their New Year’s resolutions. Only 12 percent succeed.

In this first issue of 2014, we unveil the latest Rave Favorites. Each year, readers vote on their favorite businesses, places to go, and people to see. The Rave Favorites exemplify the best our area has to offer, from exceptional customer service to high quality product and services. I encourage you to use this issue as a buyer’s manual when you are shopping around. The Favorites have a proven track record of successful customer relationships.

Why?

This issue also includes the latest edition of Danville Regional Medical Center’s “Health Talk.” Medical emergencies are things we all dread, but unfortunately, have to face at times. Having a confident, comforting, and competent emergency room is one of the most valuable assets a city can acquire. In Danville, we are very fortunate to have DRMC’s Emergency Room. For “Health Talk” we get to know the people that are here to help when an emergency arises.

I can’t speak for everyone, but for me, the dreaded “p” word is a major culprit. Procrastination plays spoiler to my resolutions. Oftentimes I say, “I’ll get to it in a little while.” The “little while” turns into hours and before I know it, the day is over, and I’ve broken the resolution. That creates another obstacle — “it’s broken, no need to fix it.” And then I’m writing down notes to include the broken resolution in next year’s batch of hopefuls. Procrastination is just a symptom of broken resolutions. The cure is accountability. Holding yourself accountable for your failures is the first step in turning a failure into a success. So, this year I resolve to hold myself accountable for any broken resolution. As punishment, I will not have dessert. That will go a long way to helping me keep the resolution of losing a little weight.

She Said... I always thought January signified a new beginning. Out with the old and in with the new. I’m not about to reflect on all of our past mistakes and worry about trying to change what’s already happened. What I can do, however, is try to be the best person I can be.

Life is not always about disagreements, what I think, what you think, or who is passing judgments either justified or unjustified. At our age, life is more about living a peaceful existence and helping our fellow man. Our life is an open book and I will continue to share it because, if I didn’t, I would have to stop whining and start preaching my beliefs. I’m not sure the world is ready for that. I just want you to agree this coming year that we will try to reach out to others more and be more cognizant of our own health and well- being. We need to thank God more for what he has provided for us. Does this sound like I’m being too self-absorbed? I could start all over and write about how mistreated I am, how I never get my way, and all of the other important factors that make me the man than I am. But I think you will agree that we should think more positively this next year and work harder to appreciate what we have. Happy New Year to the most beautiful girl in the world.

I’ve always said that we are all put on this earth to help each other and I firmly believe that. I also agree that we should think positively and try and make a difference in the life of another person. We do that in small ways throughout the year, but I agree that we could do even more.

When you start talking about preaching, I think that it is my solemn duty to warn people that they don’t want that to happen. I would rather hear you whine because you are so good at it. But for you to preach and cram your opinions down everyone’s throat would not be a lovely sight. Don’t forget I am around you every day when you come home bellyaching about not getting your way, or the fact that no one sees your vision the way you see it. (Who could imagine a world of unwanted collectibles sitting for years in the basement or storage unit accumulating dust and losing value?) Who wants to envision a world where the highlight of every day is meal time? Granted, food is important, but we should eat to live not live to eat, Sweetheart. You would also preach against any kind of physical activity because in your mind, people who exercise are racing to the end of their life. That’s why you take it easy all of the time. And who would want to live in a world where one person thinks they are right about everything? I know that applies to you, but I hope all men aren’t like that. I will reach out to those less fortunate this year. But my first inclination in making a New Year’s wish is that you have the vision to help yourself improve before going out and infecting others with your lame opinions about exercise and your lack of self-control when it comes to eating. That, my love, is my vision. Happy New Year. SM

January is always a good time to reflect on the reason why life is so good. I could list a hundred different ideas about what my life means to me and what makes our lives so wonderful. We both have jobs, great children, our God who blesses us every day, many lifelong friends, and of course our family. We just have so many pleasant events going on that we sometimes over look people around us who are sick and having problems. We pray for them and we wish them well, but do we take for granted our own good health and well-being? Am I getting too sentimental?

Put Your Money Into Action

The investment community offers many choices. Investments are on the market for one reason: people will buy them. The sellers want your money now so they meet their objectives. For example, expand their operations, build new facilities, or make investments of their own. To meet their goals, they are prepared to share with you the benefits of using your money. Let’s say you have money to put into some investments, but you must have something in return — profit. Depending on your goals, you may want profit immediately, soon, or sometime down the road, or possibly, now and later. With such investments as commodities or options, you may profit quickly. Profit usually comes later with investments in such items as growth stocks, collectibles, and IRAs. Items like convertible corporate bonds, which can be converted to stock, and precious metals may give an immediate profit or you may have to wait. When you finally do get down to picking a specific investment, you suddenly find yourself face-to-face with over-choice. At any given moment, there are thousands upon thousands of investment opportunities available, as anyone can see by scanning the stock market quotations and real estate ads online or in large daily newspapers.

Todd Boaze

10 Showcase Magazine

Obviously, even with a team of experts, you have no hope of evaluating all those opportunities individually. However, do not panic. You have two options to consider:

What factors define marketability of an investment? In general, the greater number of buyers and sellers interested in a particular investment, the greater the marketability. For example, as rare and expensive as that antique vase is, it may not be the best investment for you, simply because of the limited number of people who are likely to buy it from you and the substantial loss you might incur if you have to sell it in a hurry.

Qualities that improve marketability include: a) A relatively large number of potential buyers. b) Lack of market control by a few individuals or groups. c) Stability of value, as compared with a faddish investment. d) All affordable, perhaps popular, prices.

1.You can make random selections, by whim or on the basis of some hunch or insider’s tip. 2.You can develop a system for zeroing in, rationally, on the investments that best suit your needs. The second alternative is obviously the sensible method, however, it is surprising how many people choose the first method. They act on tips from relatives, fellow employees, or friends. Or they rely entirely on their broker’s primary advice, even though they know the broker’s primary interest lies in making commissions by encouraging customers to come back again and again to buy and sell. Such a prospect makes it all the more logical for you to dedicate yourself to learning all you can about the world of investing and personal finance. The first step is to understand the differences of profit. More often than not, investors will completely ignore another characteristic of investments: liquidity and marketability.

| January 2014 | www.showcasemagazine.com

The two do not necessarily have a close relationship to security, income return, or capital gain, but are just as important to you.

Marketability is also a function of today’s economic climate. If you had shares in a company that manufactured video game consoles, and the news was full of the massive consumer demand for video game consoles, your stock would be highly marketable. However, if you had shares with a cell phone company and there was a shakedown in the cell phone industry, your stock might not be marketable for the moment or salable only at a loss. Liquidity is the ease with which an investment can be converted to cash, or sold, without significantly affecting the market price. Real estate and gold jewelry are relatively liquid. Most regular bank accounts and moneymarket mutual funds, most stocks, and bonds with short maturities that are redeemable upon demand are all highly liquid.

With U.S. savings bonds, the government promises to pay the holder 100 percent of a specified amount at any time after a minimum holding period. These are easily converted to cash by offering yields competitive to money-market instruments. Institutional investors, such as insurance companies, trust companies, and banks have planned programs that assure adequate liquidity. This is understandable because of the demands that may be made upon them. Their investment programs achieve liquidity because each year a certain part of their investments automatically becomes cash to meet expected and unexpected demands. Individual investors cannot hope to match the precise liquidity arrangements of a large investor. Many of your needs for cash are unexpected, such as debilitating illness or accidents. Therefore, you must take care in making your investments to meet expected and unexpected demands for liquidity. Happy Investing! SM

HEALTH TALK EDITION Winter 2014 The Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Room:

g n i t Get k c a B you e f i L to Life can often bring accidents and unexpected emergencies. A simple trip to the grocery store – even a quick jog around the block - can end up as an unanticipated trip to the Emergency Room (ER). Whatever the nature of the situation, getting fast, compassionate and high quality care is always of the utmost importance. The trained professionals in the Emergency Room at Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) stand ready to provide help when you need it most. Their purpose in life is to save yours. Millions of lives are saved each day in Emergency Room’s (ER’s) across the country. Doctors, nurses and other highly trained healthcare professionals provide emergent and urgent care to seriously

ill and injured adults and children every second of every minute. And while visiting an ER may often provide the quickest access to treatment, numerous factors can affect the actual time in which care is received, such as the number of critically ill patient’s needing and receiving care. The ER at Danville Regional is constantly seeking ways of enhancing the care it provides and is on a mission to change the way emergency care is delivered to the people of the Dan River Region. “It is really an exciting time to be a part of this team,” says Meredith Sutton, Clinical Manager in DRMC’s Emergency Room. “I’m most proud that our team who are truly committed to implementing the changes and process improvements needed in moving our ER towards becoming the most efficient and effective ER anywhere. Healthcare is an everchanging environment. It’s important to be able to adapt and act quickly.”

“We want our patients to feel assured and know that they are in the best hands possible and will be well taken care of.” Anne Mills, MSN Emergency Room Director

52 Showcase Magazine

| January 2014 | www.showcasemagazine.com

Over the last two years, Danville Regional has recruited tremendously talented individuals to care for patients in its emergency room. Leading the ER team is Dr. Ian Greenwald, Medical Director - a board certified emergency medicine physician who is a previous faculty member and employee of Duke University Health System; and Anne Mills, Clinical Director of the Emergency Room, who returned to Danville Regional after having established a successful emergency room at a nearby hospital in North Carolina. Within a few minutes of speaking to Dr. Greenwald, Anne and Meredith, it’s easy to see that patients seeking care in DRMC’s ER are in good hands. “We have a great staff of professionals who love what they do in the Emergency Room,” says Anne. “We hire people for their skills, passion for Emergency Medicine, and concern for others. These three attributes equate to an exceptional experience for our patients. We want our patients to feel assured and know that they are in the best hands possible and will be well taken care of.” When it comes to excellent care, recent process improvements have truly enhanced the quality of care available at Danville Regional’s ER. “We have an excellent and very collaborative relationship with Duke University Health System,” Dr. Greenwald says. “We’re very focused on a wide spectrum of

cardiovascular emergencies; whether to treat heart attacks, strokes, or to support any of our cardiothoracic surgeons. Danville Regional has a 24/7 STEMI activation program for our cardiac catheterization lab for acute heart attacks. This is a huge resource for the community and vitally important to someone who’s experiencing a heart attack or chest pains.”

When a medical emergency occurs, time and teamwork are crucial. To ensure that every patient receives prompt and appropriate care, a team leader is assigned to coordinate each patient’s care. Karen Terry, registered nurse (RN), is one of the six team leaders in the emergency room at Danville Regional. She is the point person for each individual patient’s needs. “When it comes to providing care for critical and emergent health needs, we are

at the top of our game. We save lives and we make a difference every day.” For the ER to run efficiently, it requires a tremendous amount of teamwork. Barbara Levchak is a registered nurse in the ER. “One of the greatest strengths of our emergency room team is teamwork. We don’t let our patients down and we don’t let each other down.”

HEALTH TALK EDITION Winter 2014 The entire process including receiving new patients and medical treatments to admissions and discharges has been streamlined. There has been a considerable reduction in the amount of time between when a patient walks into the Emergency Room and when they are either admitted or discharged.

The staff has developed a team approach towards receiving new patients which reduces the number of times a patient is asked the same question.

The Emergency Room has received accreditation from the Society for Chest Pain.

Emergency Medical Service (EMS) agencies can now send electrocardiogram’s (EKG‘s) from the field which results in quicker and more comprehensive care for cardiac patients. These EKGs are processed by a dedicated server and displayed on a large screen monitor for the physicians to view.

The Cath Lab operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, reducing the number of cardiac patients who have to be sent out of town for treatment.

Dr. Ian Greenwald Dr. Ian Greenwald, Medical Director of Emergency Services at Danville Regional Medical Center, is quick with a joke and even quicker with a laugh. His enigmatic personality keeps the emergency room staff buzzing with energy. His desire to help people is what led him to a career in medicine. Greenwald says, “I love the emergency room because the needs are generally very acute and there is a tremendous variety in the illnesses and injuries we treat.” Dr. Greenwald and his wife of ten years have two young boys. Work and parenting are two full-time jobs, but when he has some free time, he’s an avid runner and cyclist. Dr. Greenwald says, “Pretty much anything outdoors, I love to do. I’ve run my share of marathons and some cycling events. I will take any opportunity to be outside. Teamwork is strong within the DRMC emergency room. It’s this commitment to the health of the community that Dr. Greenwald values. “As an emergency physician, this is an incredibly rewarding environment to work. We have an extremely dedicated staff that serves a community of dedicated folks. It’s truly an honor to be a part of the team that provides that service.”

Dr. Richard Smith Dr. Richard Smith came to Danville 23 years ago. The attractable cost of living is what brought Smith to the community. The truly, caring nature Danville has for its own is what keeps him here. Dr. Smith says, “Danville’s provided my family with a

lot of special memories. My children have grown up here.”

Family is important to Dr. Smith. He says, “Your children are your legacy.” Dr. Smith’s wife, Carolyn, is a board member at the Danville Area Choral Arts Society. She also sings at Epiphany Episcopal Church. Dr. Smith spends much of his free time outdoors. He loves boarding, skiing, and hiking. He is also a big fan of science-fiction stating that watching The Big Bang Theory is a great way to unwind. Dr. Smith sees the importance of the emergency room at DRMC. He says, “Our emergency department provides quality healthcare close to home. Cardiac disease is the number one killer in adults. Unfortunately, it’s prevalent in our community. “Regular exercise, proper nutrition, and routine check-ups with your family are great preventive measures to help people avoid having to seek emergency care,” Dr. Smith says. Becoming health-conscious is the one thing Dr. Smith would like to tell people with regards to staying healthy. “Take better care of yourselves, if you are on medication, take it as prescribed, and exercise, I can’t express that enough.”

Dr. Kristin Whapshare A close-knit community where people look out for each other is important to Dr. Kristin Whapshare. For her, that is what makes Danville special. Career opportunities at

DMRC brought Dr. Whapshare and her family to the area. The excellent, extended training DRMC provides is an added perk. Outside of work, having three young children keeps Dr. Whapshare busy. But when she finds free time, she likes to swim and practice yoga. Baking cookies is another specialty. When asked to describe something unique about herself. She shares, “I’ve run with Oprah Winfrey.” Dr. Whapshare is fairly new to the community, but in the time she’s been in Danville she has witnessed community spirit at its brightest. She’s always looking for opportunities to get more involved in the community. Dr. Whapshare enjoys being part of DRMC’s emergency department. She understands the importance of quality emergency care. She says, “We save lives and provide healthcare to people that do not have a personal doctor.” Another aspect to quality emergency care is to keep the family informed. “I treat the family like the patient because they are very concerned and usually remember what is said.” One thing that Dr. Whapshare would like for people to change about their health is diet. She says, “Stop eating breakfast biscuits and cut out fried foods.”

Along with a strong community, Aiken thinks family helps to shape and develop someone’s personality. “Family also gives us teachings that guide us throughout our loves. These teachings are the values we carry wherever we go.” Aiken brings family and community together through volunteerism. She says, “My children and I have volunteered by serving diner to the homeless at a local church.” Aiken has also volunteered as host of the “Triad Baby Shower” which served less-fortunate expecting mothers. Aiken holds the benefits of good health in high regard. She is a mentor of a health program for some of the ladies in the emergency department as well as others outside of work. Brandon White, RN A lifelong resident of the area, Brandon White is proud of the changes being made in Danville. She is looking forward to being a part of the community’s bright future as it evolves yet maintains the small town charm. Among ways that White and her

family give back to the community, she says, “My husband served as a previous youth league coach and has also served as a previous YMCA board member.” For White, a family’s love is unconditional. She says, “Family is our history as well as our future. We love, teach, and learn from each other. You can share your joy and sorrow with your family. Family is your rock.” When not working, White enjoys working out, running with her husband, and horseback riding. She spends a lot of time cheering at her daughter’s volleyball and softball games.

White is proud to be a part of the DRMC emergency room team. She understands its vitality to the community. “People want to come to the emergency room and know they are going to receive great care.” She continues, “We serve such a large area where people don’t seek health care until absolutely necessary. We are here for them.” The most common question White hears is, “Why won’t the doctor give me antibiotics for my cold or flu?” Her answer — Antibiotics only work against bacteria. Colds and flu are caused by viruses.

60 Showcase Magazine

| January 2014 | www.showcasemagazine.com

Wait times have decreased dramatically. It is the goal of the entire Emergency Room to never have a patient wait to be seen. However, critically ill or injured patients will always be treated first, regardless if a patient arrives by ambulance or through the main ER entrance. Unfortunately this means when the Emergency Room is busy, patients may have to wait to be seen.

HEALTH TALK EDITION Winter 2014

How long will treatment take?

Wait time in the Emergency Room while receiving care will depend on a number of variables: The seriousness of your injury or illness; the amount and types of tests or procedures your condition requires; test preparations for diagnosis may take 2-3 hours before test can be administered; your need to see a specialty doctor; the number and condition of other patients currently in the Emergency Room.

May a family member stay with me?

Due to the intense work environment, limited physical space, and the need to maintain privacy for each of our patients, visitors may need to be restricted. It is your right to have someone with you at all times, but be considerate of the physical space in the treatment rooms. It is essential to your care and safety that your healthcare providers be able to easily move about to care for you. Patients/family waiting in our lobby are unable to see ambulances arriving with critical patients. The Emergency Department staff appreciates your understanding and will always strive to keep you informed regarding delays. If at any point while waiting, please do not hesitate to notify staff should you or your loved one’s condition change.

Signs & Symptoms:

Am I Having a

HEART ATTACK?

You’re watching television when you notice a change in your breathing. You feel every breath, whereas just minutes before your favorite show held your attention. Each breath seems a little more forced than the one before.Your chest feels as if someone is sitting on it. The pressure intensifies to the point where it feels like the person sitting on your chest is now using your body for a trampoline.Your skin is clammy. Nausea sets in. The pain spreads throughout your arms, shoulders, and neck.Your stomach aches. “Am I having a heart attack?” you ask yourself, hoping that it’s something as simple as heartburn, indigestion, or even a panic attack. Be safe. Always call 9-1-1.

cold sweat. A person suffering a stroke may exhibit sudden confusion, impaired vision in one or both eyes, difficulty walking or speaking, a severe headache, or numbness or weakness in the extremities. Strokes, most often, affect one side of the body and can be diagnosed by asking the victim to raise both arms, smile, and speak a simple sentence. If the individual has problems performing any of these tasks, he or she is likely having a stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in the United States, the number one killer of men and women is heart attacks, while the number three killer is strokes. So, what do you do when you think you or someone around you is experiencing one of these major issues? “Maintaining self-control during a health emergency could save your life. Panicking only makes things worse,” says Dr. Ian Greenwald, Medical Director of Emergency Services at Danville Regional.

Emergencies come in varying degrees. No one enjoys experiencing pain. Some health problems, such as a sprained ankle, can be handled by visiting your family doctor or a local clinic. For more serious medical emergencies, such as heart attacks and strokes, time is a critical factor in mitigating damage and even saving a life. “Remain calm when an emergency strikes. Being prepared can save your life or the life of a loved one,” says Meredith Sutton, Registered Nurse (RN) and Clinical Manager of the Emergency Room at Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC). According to the Cleveland Clinic, there are a number of symptoms that may indicate an oncoming heart attack or stroke. Symptoms of a heart attack include unusual pain in the center of the chest, breathlessness, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, or having a 62 Showcase Magazine

The Way You Sleep Can Save Your Life There are really two schools of thought on sleeping. Sleeping on your back is dangerous if you suffer from sleep apnea because your throat muscles and tongue relax during sleep and lead to increased snoring and instances of sleep apnea which can lead to death. Sleeping on your side increases the risk of having a heart attack or stroke while you sleep because you are causing compression on the lung closest to the bed which slows down the blood circulating through that lung. So what do you do? The solution is simple. If you don’t suffer from sleep apnea or intense snoring, then sleep on your back. It will lower your chance of heart attack or stroke during sleep. If you do suffer from sleep apnea or intense snoring that lessens when you sleep on your side, then seek medical attention for the sleep apnea condition. Once you’ve solved the sleep condition, sleep on your back. If you experience severe snoring, sleep apnea, or any of the early warning signs for heart attack or stroke, it is vital that you visit a primary care physician as soon as possible to evaluate the best course of treatment for your specific situation.

| January 2014 | www.showcasemagazine.com

Knowing these steps can minimize physical damage during a medical emergency. Follow this procedure and wait for medical professionals to arrive. Formulate a plan now for emergency situations to give yourself or your loved ones the best chance possible for survival and recovery. You can learn more about preparing for and handling medical emergencies at danvilleregional.com.

HEALTH TALK EDITION Winter 2014

If you think you’re having a heart attack.. Call 911. The most critical step is alerting emergency services to your need for assistance. The sooner they are contacted, the sooner they will be able to help. Take an aspirin if instructed to by a doctor or health professional. A heart attack or stroke occurs when blood is unable to reach the heart or brain, respectively, due to a blockage. Aspirin thins the blood and makes it easier for blood to flow through a congested artery. Until help arrives, lie down with your feet elevated above your heart. This will improve breathing and circulation and may also help you relax.

Remain calm. Try to prevent a sharp increase in blood pressure by focusing on taking deep breaths and not becoming too excited about the situation. Wait for an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to arrive and transport you to the nearest hospital. If you are experiencing symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, never drive yourself to the hospital; you may lose consciousness and have a wreck.

The Best Emergency Room Visit Possible

8 Things you need to know before going to the Emergency Room The Emergency Room (ER) handles everything from heart attacks and strokes to tummy aches, so visiting an ER may take a while. Everyone is seen in the order of most pressing need – or the severity of illness – first. Danville Regional Medical Center has a Fast Track system in place so that 64 Showcase Magazine

those who do not necessarily need to see a doctor for their condition aren’t required to wait for a doctor. “When you’re sick or in pain, a few minutes can feel like an eternity,” says Anne Mills, Director of the Emergency Room at Danville Regional. Here are some tips on how to make the experience better. Occupy yourself. The waiting room is likely to be filled with people. So, make sure you bring something to distract you. Don’t eat. You never know what tests the doctor may order and food in your stomach can sometimes interfere with tests and procedures.

| January 2014 | www.showcasemagazine.com

Come with someone. Just like a long drive can be less boring with a companion, so can your emergency room visit. And a friend or relative can act as your advocate, communicating on your behalf with the doctors and nurses so that you can focus on getting well. Bring a list of your medications. You should really keep this information with you at all times in your wallet or in a file on your portable device. The list should include all prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements. You should include allergies and contact numbers. If you have any condition, allergy, or take any drug that a Medical Provider should

HEALTH TALK EDITION Winter 2014

know about should you become unconscious, then you should also wear a medical ID bracelet at all times. Be patient. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for every 100 people in the United States, there are 45 emergency room visits per year. That’s a staggering number. If your visit could be taken care of at an urgent care facility, such as Family Urgent Care on Piney Forest Road, or by your primary care physician, you would do yourself a service and likely save yourself some money by going there first.

Come prepared to make a payment. Bring your insurance card with you and and be prepared to pay deductibles and co-pays at the time of visit. Danville Regional provides service to anyone irrespective of ability to pay. In addition, for those who do not have insurance and/or for those who expect to pay for their own services, Danville Regional offers a substantial discount if payment is made at the time of the visit.

Understand the process. There are two types of services provided at Danville Regional’s ER — Emergent Care and Urgent Care. If you have a truly life-threatening condition such as a heart attack or stroke, you will receive immediate care. If you must see a doctor for an urgent care condition, you will be seen after those experiencing life-threatening conditions. Patients are not always seen in the order in which they arrive. If you have a sickness or condition that doesn’t require a doctor to see you, then you may be seen by a physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner. The entire system is based on the needed urgency of your condition ensuring you the proper care as quickly as possible. Protect yourself. You never know what germs and contagious illnesses may be in the waiting area. Ask for a mask. Use hand sanitizer. Avoid shaking hands with and hugging people you may run into.

Health Care Reform and You

“On or Off Exchange?” We are now 3 months into the open enrollment period for the new health insurance plans that must meet the Affordable Care Act guidelines. More and more consumers are starting to shop around for health insurance to make sure they have coverage for themselves and their family in 2014. In this article, we are going to discuss why someone may want to shop for plans “off exchange” rather than through the exchange or marketplace. We will also cover some things you should look for and check into prior to purchasing a policy. Generally speaking, the only consumers who have a distinct incentive to enroll through the exchanges are ones who are under 400% of the federal poverty level. This is because they will qualify for subsidies (financial assistance) or Medicaid depending on their situation. If you are under 400% of the federal poverty level, it is a good idea to apply through the exchange to see how much of a subsidy you will receive. You will then be better prepared to pick a plan you can afford after you know your subsidy amount. You can apply through the exchange at www.healthcare.gov. Your local agent, (our agency included), may be able to help you get through the government website as well. For consumers who are above 400% of the federal poverty level, there are a number of reasons why “off exchange” plans may be the way to go. We will outline some of these below: • Health insurance plans “off exchange” are generally much easier to enroll in. This is because you do not have to apply through the exchange and wait for them

to verify your income and determine your citizenship status. You will be able to skip that step and go straight into enrolling in a plan. • You will have more options as to where you can enroll for these plans. You will be able to enroll through your local agent/broker if they offer health insurance; we are available to help consumers enroll. Also; the companies themselves are enrolling individuals through their websites and storefronts. • Some consumers prefer the minimal government involvement when enrolling “off exchange” with a company directly and not being monitored by the exchange. • Plans “on exchange” may have a smaller network of doctors available. Insurance companies have found cost savings by offering lower compensation rates to a smaller network of doctors in return for a potential larger pool of patients to make up the difference. It is always a good idea to compare your options. Each individual insurance company may have differences in coverage within their policies “on and off exchange.” Some things to keep an eye out for are the deductible, co-pay and co-insurance amounts. These amounts may vary depending on whether or not you see your primary care provider or a specialist. You may also want to consult with your doctor after you have found a plan you’re interested in, to ensure they will accept it. Hopefully this article has brought some clarity to reasons you may want to look “on exchange” or “off exchange.” Everyone has their own unique situation and must compare their options to determine what is right for their family.

life in the fat lane

This month, my friend Christina Byrd offered me some advice that I would like to share with you. Dear Bobby, I am sure you have heard this before but the key to making a lasting change in your life is to do it gradually. It is tough for any person, no matter what their discipline level may be, to quit something cold turkey that has been a huge part of their life. Drastic measures do sometimes produce drastic effects but often not long-term results.

The time between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve is always a time of reflection for me. By the time you read this column, I will have done something that I usually do not do. I usually go to a small family celebration on New Year’s Eve, get home by 9:00, and go to bed far before midnight. Frankly, 2013 has been such a challenging year, that I am going to stay up until midnight on December 31st, not to usher in the New Year, but to make sure the old one leaves. In 2013, we did not solve all the animal problems in this area, but we certainly did help thousands of individual animals. Our wish is that 2014 is a kinder, gentler one for animals than the past has been. We wish that all cats could have loving owners, who make sure the cats have all their needs met. Our ultimate wish is that all cats could be inside. If this is not possible, than we want all cats to have shelter, food, and water at all times. We wish that all dogs could have loving owners, who make sure the dogs have all their needs met. We wish all dogs could get off chains, would not be allowed to roam freely, and would have shelter, food, and water at all times. We wish the same for all the companion rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, ferrets, hamsters; yes, in fact, we wish the same for all the companion animals. We wish all animals could live life to the measure of their creation, and then die quickly and painlessly. We wish all the humans with whom animals come into contact would have gentle hands and caring hearts. So, goodbye to you, harsh and sad 2013. On January 1, 2014, we woke up, determined to do what we can to make our wishes come true. SM

Cultivating Renewal: The Venture Story

feature Lee Vogler

Bobby Allen Roach

“The opportunity to cultivate renewal.” That is what Eric Hash says drew him to Danville to become “lead guy” for a new church: Venture. The origin of Venture Christian Church has two sides. Hash had previously been on staff at a new church in Indiana, but not as the lead person. “I wanted to gain some experience before I went out on my own and started a church as the lead guy”, says Hash. Meanwhile, a number of churches in Southside Virginia came together with the idea of funding and helping start a new church in Danville. These local churches partnered with the Virginia Evangelizing Fellowship (VEF), and the VEF hired Hash to lead this new church. Venture is different from most churches for a number of reasons. One standout is its location. While its office is located on Patton Street, services are held at the Danville YMCA each Sunday. This can sometimes be a challenge for the upstart church. “We have to move all of our stuff in and then take it out each week,” says Hash. “We have to work a little harder to be visible to the community because people can’t see our church building.” Venture’s tagline is “Church Re-Imagined.” This vision encompasses many aspects that create a unique experience each Sunday. The music, for example, is more contemporary, sometimes featuring songs from Mumford and Sons and Of Monsters and Men. “Our music is going to be a little louder,” Hash says, with a smile. Venture also has a very relaxed atmosphere that tries to make everyone feel welcome. “I preach in shorts when it’s warm and jeans when it’s colder,” says Hash. “We don’t care what you look like and you don’t need to get dressed up.You don’t need to make sure your life is in order. Just come as you are with all your questions, your fears, your doubts, your disagreements, your junk, and you will find that we are people just like you trying to find our way.”

Hash and the Church take great effort in trying to be actively involved in the community, serving on several boards and events, including the annual River District Festival, which Hash will serve as Chair of in 2014. “We decided in the beginning that we wanted to be involved in what the community was already doing,” Hash says. “My passion is to see the renewal of a city coincide with the spiritual renewal of its people. We see Danville as being a prime place for that to happen. We are committed to building a great city, not just a great church.” While more traditional churches still frown upon having mobile devices out during services,Venture actually encourages it. Hash preaches his message each Sunday from an iPad and frequently suggests that the audience can take out their smartphone to follow along. Technology is a big part of how Venture conveys its message each week, using video presentations and other interactive mediums as a way to keep people engaged in the lesson. The future for Venture is still being written and in the coming year, some significant changes are on the way. Currently, the church plans to move their services into the new riverfront YMCA building once it opens but Hash says they are leaving the door open to other possibilities. “Some kind business owner may decide that he or she would like to donate a building for us to have, but either way, we will continue to invest in the people and City of Danville.” So as Danville is growing and making positive changes, so is this new church. Perhaps it was meant to be for Eric Hash and his family to come to Danville at this point in time when the city is working to breathe new life back into its lungs. Both Danville and Venture have something in common that they are striving for — cultivating renewal. SM
