‘X-factor’ Watchkeeper gears up for export Y

esterday at DSEI, Thales announced the launch of a new flexible approach to market the Watchkeeper unmanned air system (UAS). Known as Watchkeeper X, the offer is based on the UAS developed for the British Army, but adopts an option-based package approach that allows it to be tailored to meet individual customer requirements. Thales has invested in Watchkeeper X to ‘‘migrate Watchkeeper from a programme into a product’’, according to Pierre-Eric Pommellet, executive VP Defence Mission Systems. continued on page 3

Sustaining ASRAAM contract MBDA has received a capability sustainment contract from the UK MoD worth more than £300 million covering the ASRAAM air-to-air missile that arms the RAF’s Typhoons and Tornados writes David Donald. The contract award was announced yesterday by defence secretary Michael Fallon during his keynote address to DSEI attendees. One element of that address focused on increased efficiency within both the forces and industry, and the ASRAAM contract is a good example. Faced with the need to conduct refurbishment work in the near future to maintain the ASRAAM stock in good condition, the MoD and MBDA have opted instead for a new-build programme that draws on the use of components from CAMM (common anti-air modular missile) production. Itself based on ASRAAM, CAMM is being procured for the British Army’s FLAADS system, and as the Sea Ceptor for the Royal Navy. By drawing on this large-scale CAMM production, supplying new-build ASRAAMs will be more cost-effective than refurbishing them. Production of the new ASRAAMs will be undertaken at a stateof-the-art facility in Bolton. The programme is forecast to sustain 400 jobs at MBDA sites in the UK and associated suppliers. Q

Watchkeeper X continued from page 1 Recognising that the tactical UAV market needs to address a number of missions − such as high-intensity conflict, extended operations, homeland security and maritime − the Watchkeeper X (WK X) offers a variety of options to meet differing operational demands and budgets, as well as to address issues of national sovereignty and industrial participation. Watchkeeper X takes the high-specification British Army system and reduces it to a core set of capabilities. The air vehicle’s UK civil/military airworthiness certification is seen as a core asset, and one that could be transferable to other authorities, with minor adjustments if required. To add to the baseline offer, Thales has schemed four options packages, covering mobility, sensors, exploitation and effectors. WK X offers roughstrip capability, and the system can be moved by vehicle to off-road locations for operation in any climate, and is rapidly deployable to any theatre. In terms of sensors, WK X can carry two payloads based

on 15in turrets. Radar options, including the Thales I-Master, offer a range of surveillance capabilities such as maritime and SAR/GMTI. The vehicle can also be a platform for communications electronic support measures (CESM) and communications intelligence (Comint) systems. In the exploitation package a number of data/imagery analysis and communications functions are catered for, including NATO-standard or customer-specific datalinks, as well as the encryption of data. A variety of weapons can also be integrated: the mock-up on display here has the Thales FFLMM light precision weapon. Initially, the WK X is being targeted at requirements in France and Poland. A decision by the French Army is expected soon, as is the issue of a firm requirement by Poland. The campaign in the latter nation highlights an important element of the WK X approach, namely the ability to answer national sovereignty requirements through the full or partial transfer of technology, and the establishment of in-country industrial partnerships. Typhoon grows stronger

DAVID DONALD As part of the ongoing test campaign for the Eurofighter Typhoon Phase Two Enhancements (P2E), trials aircraft IPA6 recently completed a new round of firings of the MBDA Meteor long-range missile. The campaign involved fewer than 10 launches, but

A Meteor is fired from Typhoon IPA6 during a recent fully guided test over the Hebrides range

Kuwait has taken delivery of an integrated chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN) detection system from Saab. The company has supplied an automatic warning and reporting (AWR) system that is based on fixed and mobile detection units, plus command and control software based on the 9LAND battle management system.

Day 3 p5.indd 4

took the missile integration trials into a new phase in which the weapon was fired at a variety of speeds, both subsonic and supersonic, and against live targets flying at various speeds and altitudes. Undertaken over the Hebrides range, the trials were planned to take into account developmental test and operational test requirements, to maximise their benefit. Meteor is due to be integrated fully with the Typhoon by 2017 under a contract from NETMA, the Typhoon management agency. Clearing the P2E software and configuration is the main priority for the test fleet for the remainder of the year. The second weapon system to be integrated, the Storm Shadow standoff missile, is due to begin

5

trials shortly at Aberporth to clear it for service next year. In the meantime, Phase Three Enhancements are being worked on with the aim of getting the P3E aircraft into service in 2019, in line with the goals of the UK’s Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) 18 plan. Key elements of P3E are mission system upgrades and the ability to carry the dualmode Brimstone 2 missile that provides an air-to-surface attack capability against fastmoving targets. Beyond P3E are a number of yet-to-be-defined enhancements, such as a common weapons launcher, Spear 3 missile, e-scan radar that can exploit its electronic attack capability, maintainability improvements, cockpit evolution

A Typhoon is shown in a ‘P3E’ fit with Litening targeting pod, Paveway IV bombs and Brimstone 2 missiles, plus Meteor and ASRAAM air-to-air weapons

and F-35 interoperability. Typhoon is expected to be in service until 2040 and beyond. E-scan radar is an important element in the planned increase in Typhoon’s combat effectiveness, and a development go-ahead was contracted last November. However, the Eurofighter consortium also recognises the importance of continued development of the current mechanically scanned radar, particularly with regard to the longer-ranged weapons now being cleared for service, and that is proceeding on a parallel track to e-scan development. Last Friday, Kuwait announced the selection of the Typhoon to meet a multirole fighter requirement. This week it was confirmed that the Kuwaiti aircraft are intended to be equipped from the outset with the initial production version of the e-scan radar, which is designated as ‘Radar 1 Plus’. Under the terms of the deal, which has not yet been concluded, Typhoons are due for delivery from 2019. Deliveries to Oman, which ordered 12 Typhoons in December 2012, are scheduled to begin in 2017. Q

Kuwait gains CBRN capability Saab’s CBRN AWR solution is a flexible, modular system that networks detection equipment that can be mounted in fixed locations, installed in CBRN vehicles or carried by personnel. In the Kuwaiti system, stationary systems provide 24-hour

coverage. If an alert activates the system, then control is automatically handed over to the mobile units, which deploy for more detailed analysis. These are specially equipped light vehicles that maintain internal overpressure to

prevent potentially harmful agents entering the cabin. Each is equipped with ruggedised displays that present the full CBRN hazard situation. The vehicles are also fitted with Saab Barracuda’s HTR heatreducing system. Q

First showing of ADC console RICHARD SCOTT Kongsberg Defence Systems (Stand S6-163) has unveiled a next-generation air defence console (ADC) intended as a ‘drop-in’ upgrade for the Fire Distribution Centre (FDC) forming part of the NASAMS groundbased air defence (GBAD) system. Jointly developed and marketed by Kongsberg and Raytheon, NASAMS is a mediumrange GBAD system based on a distributed architecture of networked sensors, firing batteries and command centres. Twin tactical workstations inside the FDC cabin are employed for track correlation, identification, jam strobe triangulation, threat evaluation and weapon assignment; multiple FDCs and

radars are netted together via radio datalinks to create a fused real-time air picture. Kongsberg commenced private venture development of a prototype ADX air defence console in early 2013. According to the company, the aim was to refresh the operator interface inside the FDC so as to introduce a more intuitive user interface that leverages human machine interface (HMI) techniques and formats similar to those widely used in touchscreen-enabled tablets and smartphones. The ADX development community included NASAMS operators (current and retired) and Kongsberg system engineers. The human factors design consultancy Halogen and industrial design house Hareide

Design were also brought on board to provide advice. Kongsberg has now engineered the ‘productionised’ ADC. ‘‘The new console embodies an HMI that young operators will immediately be familiar with,’’ said Hans Christian Hagen, vice president business development for Kongsberg’s air defence business. ‘‘The amount of information available to operators is increasing all the time. So we are improving the way that they can interpret the information and derive situational awareness. We want to make it easier for the operators to understand what they see, and act upon it.’’ Engineered for physical fit and form compatibility with the legacy operator stations, the ADC is based on two common 30in full-colour touchscreen flat panel displays. A common status display/tote is located between the two operator screens. Although the ADC retains a keyboard, trackerball and select fixed function keys, the new HMI is primarily based on touchscreen interaction. Kongsberg expects to complete qualification of the Q ADC by the end of 2015.

Electronic at A new scalable counterunmanned air vehicle (C-UAV) system has been unveiled by Finmeccanica’s systems and sensors house Selex ES (Stand S5-110) at DSEI 2015. Known as Falcon Shield, the system marries a multi-spectral threat sensing capability with a radio frequency (RF) electronic attack (EA) capability that provides a command link control intervention capability. According to Selex ES, the

attack to counter UAVs rapid proliferation of micro/ mini UAVs represents a growing potential threat to both national and commercial security. To address this challenge, the company has developed Falcon Shield as a non-kinetic, low collateral C-UAV solution that provides users with a rapidly deployable, scalable and modular system to find, fix, track, identify and defeat potential threats. Falcon Shield uses high-

performance electro-optical and electronic surveillance sensors, combined with a scenariospecific radar, to provide fully integrated threat detection, identification and tracking capability, and enable effective operation in all environments − including high-clutter ‘urban canyons’. Also incorporated within the Falcon Shield system is an EA capability that provides users with the ability to disrupt or

7

janes.com/dsei

take control of the threat. Selex ES claims that Falcon Eye ‘‘is the first of its type to offer an ‘RF management’ EA option for operators’’. Furthermore, because Falcon Shield is inherently flexible, this EA capability can be complemented by the integration of optional kinetic effectors. The operator interface is based on the company’s Vantage control and situation awareness framework, which provides an intuitive user interface and automated threat detection tracking functions, including automated handover between detection and identification sensors. The flexibility of the Vantage C2SA framework also enables the Falcon Shield system to be readily tailored and interfaced with existing customer-specific security solutions as well as the customer’s security infrastructure. The sensing element of Falcon Shield has already been tested in recent ‘Trial Bristow’ evaluations, with the defeat mechanism tested separately. Selex ES says it is talking to a number of potential users across government and industry, and is currently ‘‘responding to an RFI for a Q prospective customer’’.

Ajax simulator Driver training for the UK’s Ajax programme is to be provided on static and full motion simulators by a team supported by Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group and led by XPI Simulation, part of the Thales Group, following the award of a major contract by prime contractor General Dynamics UK. The multimillion pound contract will provide 28 sets of equipment, with the first being delivered in 2017. XPI Simulation will provide the software and the motion base; Marshall will provide the replica driver modules. ‘‘Securing this contract on the UK’s largest current land programme confirms our capability to provide real engineered solutions,’’ said Steve Fitz-Gerald, CEO of Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group. ‘‘Our knowledge of training and in particular part task trainers gives confidence that we will be able to deliver a high-quality solution for this important simulator that will enable UK forces to maximise the benefits of the Ajax vehicle.’’ Q

Unmanned system of systems RICHARD SCOTT Autonomous surface vehicles house ASV (Stand S2-364) is to deliver the unmanned surface vehicle (USV) component of a next-generation mine countermeasures (MCM) ‘system of systems’ being developed by a Thales/BAE Systems consortium under the French/UK Maritime Mine Countermeasures (MMCM) demonstrator programme. The bilateral MMCM prototyping effort is planned to lead to the world’s first operational unmanned MCM system. Thales was awarded a £17 million contract by OCCAR in March this year to execute MMCM Stage 1 over a 15-month period. The goal of the MMCM programme is to de-risk and demonstrate a low-risk, robust and reliable ‘end-to-end’ mine detection, classification, localisation and neutralisation capability that meets a common French and UK requirements set. As part of the overall solution, ASV is developing an improved variant of the Halcyon multi-role USV design showcased at DSEI 2013.

According to ASV, Halcyon has been proven at sea, with its full autonomous capability validated in a September 2014 demonstration to the UK Ministry of Defence. ‘‘Our Halcyon class of multirole autonomous surface vehicles has been developed over the course of our longstanding relationship with Thales to offer the ideal solution to the MMCM programme,’’ said Dan Hook, ASV’s managing director. ‘‘Developed from the [original] Halcyon design, the more complex and capable ‘Mk 2’ offers greater efficiency, stability and an increased payload capacity.’’

A model of the evolved Halcyon design is being shown on Thales’ Stand S6-110. Compared to the original Halcyon prototype, the new variant is slightly longer in length, and slightly narrower in beam. The mast is redesigned, and the transom lowered to leave a large flat working deck aft. Stage 1 of the MMCM demonstrator programme is scheduled to culminate in a Critical Design Review in mid2016. The contract includes options for the manufacture (Stage 2) and demonstration (Stage 3) of two identical systems for evaluation by the respective partner navies. Q

RAF airlifters get data protection Airbus Defence and Space (DS) (Stand S2-310) has won a contract from the UK Ministry of Defence to equip Royal Air Force A400M Atlas airlifters with cryptographic key management technology. The cryptographic key management solution will be supplied to the A400M programme to provide the highest protection for encrypted data and prevent data compromise that could threaten the safety and security of the aircraft mission. Developed by cyber-security specialists from Airbus DS

at Newport in the UK, the technology eliminates the need for crypto equipment aboard an airborne platform to be individually rekeyed before every mission. As such, it provides increased flexibility and permits prolonged out-ofarea operation. Under the initial 15-month development contract for the A400M, worth £3.3 million, Airbus DS will design, develop, manufacture, accredit and deliver the A400M Local Crypto Key Management System. The contract includes options to extend support and provide

Long-life Warrior CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Lockheed Martin UK (Stand S8-210) is showing the latest version of its demonstrator vehicle from the Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme (WCSP), which it is developing under a contract awarded in November 2011 by the UK Defence Equipment & Support Organisation. Alan Lines, vice-president and managing director of the Lockheed Martin UK Ampthill sites, told the DSEI Daily: ‘‘We continue to make excellent progress with this important programme that will be the key to the Army’s future armoured fighting vehicle capability. Our successful firing trials earlier this year demonstrated the accuracy and lethality of the new-generation Warrior, designed and manufactured in the UK.’’ WCSP aims to extend the life of the BAE Systems Combat Vehicles UK Warrior infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) out to 2035-40 and to provide the British Army with a step change in capability over the currently deployed Warrior IFV. WCSP includes the Warrior Fightability

& Lethality Improvement Programme, Warrior Enhanced Electronic Architecture and Warrior Modular Protection System (WMPS). It is expected that 380 Warrior IFVs and variants will be upgraded through WCSP, with some 285 fitted with the new turret. All the specialised variants are fitted with a oneman 7.62mm machine gun turret. The current Warrior turret is armed with an unstabilised and slow-firing 30mm RARDEN cannon, which will be replaced by a brand-new turret designed by Lockheed Martin UK, armed with a fully stabilised 40mm Case

Telescoped Cannon and 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. To reduce through-life costs, this new turret uses subsystems from the turret developed for the Scout SV under contract to General Dynamics UK. WMPS is essentially a new hull mounting system to which the user can rapidly attach various armour solutions depending on where the vehicle is to be deployed and the threat it is expected to meet. Lockheed Martin is to supply 12 WCSP demonstrator vehicles under the contract: nine section vehicles (including two section command) and single examples of command, repair and Q recovery variants.

Venomous firepower Griffon Hoverwork (Stand S10-262) is considered a world leader in hovercraft technology, and has more than 180 craft operating around the world in military, defence and civilian sectors. Paramount Naval Systems and the group’s maritime subsidiary, Nautic Africa, represent a concentration of maritime and ship-building expertise, notably in the patrol craft, support vessel and rigid inflatable sectors. Q

SAM J BASCH Taking a 50kg anti-armour missile to a naval helicopter opens interesting possibilities. This is exactly what Denel Dynamics (N3-130) hoped to achieve for AgustaWestland when it integrated its Mokopa missile on a Super Lynx 300-series helicopter. Denel’s development of the semi-active laser-guided Mokopa, the indigenous name for the highly venomous black mamba snake, was meant to give its Rooivalk AH-2 combat helicopter an anti-armour capability. With the helicopter now serving as part of the UN Force Intervention Brigade in

Central Africa, consideration is being given to integrate the missile on the Rooivalk. However, Denel broadened the anti-armour designation to ‘surface target’ missiles, in view of envisaged land vehicle-based and naval applications. ‘‘Our contract was with AgustaWestland, not with the end-user client,’’ said Sihle Mayisela, executive manager business development and marketing. ‘‘And although we were confronted with notable technical difficulties, flight trials undertaken at the OEM proved highly satisfactory.’’ The DSEI Daily understands the foreign client, believed to be Algeria, would soon receive

the first of its new Super Lynx armed with eight Mokopa missiles in four-round carriers on either side of the fuselage. The South African Navy operates four Super Lynx 300 Mk 64 helicopters from its Meko A-200 Valour-class frigates. With an effective range of 5.4nm (10km), the Mokopa has a powerful tandem HEAT warhead capable of penetrating 1,350mm rolled homogeneous armour, and is effective against explosive reactive armour. ‘‘For the naval variant, Denel has developed a different warhead other than the antiarmour one, which is now destined for the end user,’’ Mayisela added. Keeping an eye out SAM J BASCH With surveillance being allimportant, it is small wonder that navigation and security surveillance specialist Kelvin Hughes (Stand S4-110) announced a host of recent new contracts this week. The company’s SharpEye SxV radar is destined for deployment to Kenya against illegal border movements, trafficking and terrorist activities. It was acquired by C4 Planning Solutions of Blythe, Georgia, USA, along with the Kelvin Hughes CxEye display and interface software, to be installed in ground surveillance

radars for the Kenyan armed forces. As a lightweight X-band radar with solid-state transceiver technology, the SxV is manportable and provides 360° coverage in all weather conditions. This made it ideal for EEZ protection in the Adriatic Sea. Kelvin Hughes partnered with Italy’s ASTIM and Fabio Fiorucci to provide surveillance cover of the Goro lagoon near Bologna, where illegal poaching threatens the multimillion-euro clam farming operations. This is similar to the deployment of Kelvin Hughes’ SxV since last year to protect oyster

sanctuaries in Chesapeake Bay. A number of SharpEye SxV radars are now protecting Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport, as part of the single-mast solution (SMS). The system will be controlled by Kelvin Hughes’ CxEye software to enable integration of feeds from multiple sensors. The SharpEye and SMS units were also contracted for an undisclosed application on mobile security platforms in Saudi Arabia. Type approval of the company’s latest I-band (X-band) SharpEye upmast naval radar system was recently completed. The TĂœV SĂœD BABT-issued approval applies to the entire radar system: radar display and software, transceiver and the carbon composite antenna turning unit and the I-band antenna. Not only does SharpEye serve as a navigation/collision avoidance system, but it also provides tactical capability, including threat detection and helicopter control in adverse weather. Singapore has recently equipped its new littoral

mission vessels with SharpEye, while New Zealand is employing it for helicopter recovery on its ANZAC-class frigates. Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Malaysia, Nigeria, Algeria and the USA are among the countries that have selected SharpEye for a range of missions in all weather conditions. ‘‘The fact that 25 of the world’s navies are now operating our type-approved SharpEye radar is proof that we are meeting the needs of modern naval equipment support programmes,’’ said the company’s sales and marketing director, Spike Hughes. Cold breaker Carinthia, a trademark of Austrian company Goldeck Textil (Stand S9-151), is displaying three new multipurpose jackets, all of which are windproof, water resistant and stay warm even at very low temperatures − properties guaranteed through its G-LOFT insulation material. Combining the benefits of natural down with the ruggedness of a synthetic fibre, G-LOFT’s ‘memory effect’ ensures that the fibres return automatically to their original form, providing warmth, even after repeated washing and hard use, as well as optimal thermal insulation and heat regulation, indoors and out. The new jackets are the ECIG (Extreme Cold Insulation Garment) 3.0 (pictured), the HIG (High Insulation Garment) 3.0, and the MIG (Medium Insulation Garment) 3.0. All three have Cordura reinforcement on shoulders and elbows for robustness, and the water-repellent outer material and hood, adjustable in three directions (two in the MIG), make the jackets extremely resistant regardless of weather conditions. The Velcro closure in combination with the inner wrist warmers ensure the necessary extra bit of protection from the cold. Q

SeaRAM in live-fire exercise ROBIN HUGHES The US Navy in August conducted the first launch of a Raytheon RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Block 1A from a SeaRAM Anti-Ship Missile Defense System during a live-fire exercise at the Naval Air Warfare (Navair) Center Weapons Division sea range, Point Magu, California. During the exercise, the SeaRAM weapon system on Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) detected, tracked and engaged an inbound threat target, and

fired a RAM Block 1A that successfully intercepted the target. The live-fire exercise was also designed to provide information to reduce risk in future combat and certification exercises for the LCS. ‘‘This test success marks a major milestone towards full

operation and employment of the SeaRAM system on US Navy ships,’’ said Rick Nelson, vice president of Naval Area and Mission Defense product line at

Raytheon Missile Systems (Stand S9-230). Designed to extend the inner-layer battlespace and enable a ship to effectively engage multiple manoeuvring supersonic and subsonic threats, SeaRAM is a spiral development of key elements of the Phalanx close-in weapon system and the RAM guided weapon system. An 11-round RAM launcher assembly replaces the Phalanx’s 20mm gun, but retains the Phalanx Block 1B’s high-resolution search-andtrack sensor systems and quick-response capability. SeaRAM matches the abovedeck footprint of the Phalanx, uses the same power, and requires minimal shipboard integration modification. Q

is fitted to reduce recoil forces on the platform. Maximum recoil is stated to be 300mm. A computerised fire control system developed by EXPAL,

called Techfire, is fitted, allowing EIMOS to come into action, carry out a fire mission, then redeploy. Maximum range depends on the type of mortar installed.

When fitted with an EXPAL 81mm mortar with a barrel length of 1.15m, a maximum range of 6,200m is obtained; when fitted with a 60mm mortar with a barrel length of 1m, a range of 4,900m can be achieved. The EIMOS being shown is based on a Spanish Uro Vamtac ST5 (4x4) high-mobility tactical vehicle platform, but it can be easily integrated onto other tracked and wheeled platforms. The 81mm version has already been exported to at least one Q customer.

Vega is a bright new star CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Czech company SVOS has completed development of the Vehicle with Enhanced Ground

performance and Armour protection (VEGA) in the 6x6 configuration, which is making its debut in the UK at DSEI (Stand N2-350).

The latest VEGA (6x6) shares some 95 per cent of the automotive components of the earlier VEGA (4x4), but has more volume and payload and can therefore undertake a wider range of battlefield missions. It has a GVW of 29 tonnes, of which up to 5 tonnes is payload. In addition to the driver and commander, the latest 6x6 armoured personnel carrier (APC) can carry a total of 11 dismounts, who are seated on blast-attenuating seats in the rear troop compartment, facing inwards. In addition to being used as an APC it can be configured for more specialised

roles such as ambulance and command post vehicle. The VEGA family is based on the well known Tatra crosscountry chassis, which has demonstrated a high level of cross-country mobility, but SVOS is also considering other chassis to meet specific export customers’ requirements. Fitted to the chassis is an all-welded steel monocoque hull with an appliquÊ passive armour package, which provides a high level of protection against not only small arms fire and shell splinters but also mines and improvised explosive devices. The VEGA 6x6 being shown here is unarmed but a variety of protected weapon stations or remote weapon stations can be fitted on the roof according to the end user’s requirements. Q

At home on land or at sea Development of the Gibbs Technologies Humdinga 4x4 amphibious vehicle is now complete, with a total of three pre-production units assembled. It has been developed to meet potential civil and military requirements for a vehicle that is equally at home on land or at sea. Humdinga has a hydrodynamic carbon fibre hull and is fitted with a Gibbs Technologies compact water-jet propulsion system. According to the company (Stand N4-468), this hull design enables the Humdinga to plane in conditions of up to Sea State 3 and maintain headway in Sea State 4.

The vehicle uses a common source to provide power on land and at sea and a power takeoff allows the engine to drive the water-jet and the wheels. The maximum water speed is being quoted at around 30mph, with a water range of up to 100 miles and around 150 miles on land. The revolutionary retractable suspension is said to provide a seamless transition from land vehicle to sea mode in less than five seconds − at the push of a button. The present maximum payload is up to 1,000kg or six people, but with the cabin roof removed this can be increased to 2,000kg.

The main thrust of the company’s marketing is the transfer of technology to overseas customers to allow them to undertake production and marketing in their own facilities.

Under an agreement announced at the Singapore Air Show in February 2014, Singapore Technologies Kinetics (STK) could build the Humdinga for sale in the Asia-Pacific region. Q

For a soft landing SAM J BASCH No paratrooper relishes the thought of a hard landing. Durban, South Africa-based designer and maker of military and sport parachutes, Aerodyne Research Manufacturing (Stand N3-110), reduces that risk with its MC1-1X static line troop parachute, shown at DSEI this week. "Our engineers have created a troop parachute with enhanced stability, 0 to 2° from the vertical, which results in a reduced rate of descent,"

says Ned Luker, Aerodyne vice president of marketing. "This reduced rate is in excess of 30 per cent compared to traditional parachutes for this military application." He attributes this largely to a new MIL-SPEC fabric (MIL-C-2005), coupled with a patented parachute design innovation. Precise airflow porosity, specifically designed slots and shaped contour panels maximise the parachute’s stability, thus enhancing the slow rate of descent. "What this means, is that we see a significant reduction

A breakthrough for memory Arrival Electronics (Stand S4-150) is unveiling the M.2 PT42 module from Apacer Technology, said to offer a breakthrough in non-volatile memory storage. About 40 per cent smaller than a mSATA SSD, the module can fit in various embedded platforms, such as workstations, thin computing devices, high-end heavy duty servers and embedded systems where space is an issue. The M.2 PT42 is designed with the PCI-Express 2.0 pinout, and is compatible with 5.0 Gbps maximum transfer rate. It is not only fully compliant with PCI Express Specification Rev.2.0 and Electromechanical Rev.2.0, but also supports NCQ commands and AHCI operational modes, and is available in capacities from 8GB to 64GB MLC NAND Flash. in lower limb injuries, while at the same time it permits an increase of the soldiers’ combat equipment load," Luker explains. "This in essence means the troops have access to extra support equipment upon landing." A further advantage of this new troop parachute is the capability to increase the drop zone landing altitude to 15,000ft ASL (above sea level), which makes it ideal for hot, dry and high climatic conditions. Aerodyne holds ISO 9001 certification and NATO

Improving ship self-defence RICHARD SCOTT UK-based research and technology group QinetiQ has revealed the development of a modular integrated Compact Combat System (C2S) designed to improve situational awareness and force protection for ‘disadvantaged’ naval units such as afloat support ships and minor war vessels. A prototype integrated test facility − housed on standard ISO container structures − has already completed at-sea trials in UK waters.

=PZP[ \Z H[ )VV[O 5

QinetiQ has for several years been exploring technologies and techniques to provide warships with improved capabilities to overcome the emerging surface threat posed by small fast inshore attack craft (FIACs). In particular, it has sought to combine the capabilities of its ESAFES sensor fusion engine − designed to improve the picture available to vessels lacking a dedicated military surveillance radar − with that of the company’s POINTER Maritime networked weapon cueing system. POINTER takes

feeds from ship sensors to provide improved situational awareness, and also provides target cues to crew-served weapons on the upper deck.

For special operations forces, time is of the essence when trying to gain access to a building or vessel. Norwaybased Henriksen REBS (Stand N7-176) has received a first order for its advanced new carbon multi ladder (CML) carbon fibre assault ladders. Some 72 sections of the CML will be delivered to the naval and army counter-terror units of a Middle Eastern government. The CML ladder developed by Henriksen REBS (rapid entry and boarding systems), shown at DSEI for the first time, uses the latest high-specification carbon fibre technology. What might appear to be a simple ladder is in fact one

with exceptional handling and performance characteristics, enabling special forces and military personnel to access difficult locations. They simply need to quickly assemble the 90cm long sections to create a wide, stable yet very light ladder up to 7m long. A special bracing system can be fitted to allow the bridging of gaps up to 5.4m wide. Another advantage of the CML is the ability to join two sections to form a stretcher for the speedy evacuation of injured personnel. Henriksen REBS is also showing lightweight hook ladders, ascent devices, grapnel launchers and wire rope Q ladders.

Earlier this year, QinetiQ performed at-sea trials of a prototype container-based installation to demonstrate the performance of a complete

mini combat system optimised for close-in defence against the FIAC threat. Based on a single ISO cabin, with a sensor payload platform mounted on a frame above, this engineering development suite integrated a Kelvin Hughes SharpEye radar, an HGH Spynel-S 3500 infrared search and track device and a Chess Dynamics Sea Eagle electro-optical surveillance system, plus ADS-B, AIS, navigation sensors and platform references. Trials were successfully performed against representative FIAC targets. Fused tracks were displayed on the POINTER situational awareness display, and cues provided to individual weapon stations via an Ethernet link. Target information was displayed in the gunner’s optical

Uplifting UGV Croatian robotics survival system house DOK-ING, in co-operation with UK chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) specialist Lutra Associates, is showing the latest, air mobile variant of its MV 4 rugged unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) at DSEI, on Stand N2-264. Designed to support combat engineering operations in hazardous environments, including CBRN, the MV 4 UGV can be equipped with a range of tools and appliances to allow combat engineers to remotely dig, lift, clear obstacles, roll, de-mine and mark routes at distances of some 1,500m from the vehicle control unit. The MV 4 weighs around 5 tonnes and is qualified for deployment by helicopter, tactical transport aircraft and parachute. Close to 100 MV 4s are currently deployed in Afghanistan to support the US Army in Operation Enduring Freedom. Lutra Associates chief executive Tim Otter said: ‘‘Both the combat engineering and CBRN environments are hazardous and UGVs have a real potential to significantly reduce the risk to people carrying out these tasks.’’ Q

This same technology − under the C2S banner − is now being offered in a ‘productised’ form by QinetiQ. ‘‘We see C2S providing an extremely flexible but low-cost solution for navies wishing to provide support ships, minehunters or other ‘disadvantaged’ units with improved situational awareness and selfprotection,’’ said Dirk Van Beek, QinetiQ’s campaign lead for International Mission Systems. ‘‘Furthermore, it is based on open architecture principles that make it straightforward to adapt to individual customer requirements, readily transportable, and easy to cross-deck between ships.’’ Q

IN BRIEF Overcoming contamination Scott Safety is displaying the Scott Patriot 5510 on Stand S4-451. As a hybrid air purifier (APR)/powered air purifier respirator (PAPR)/ self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), this modular system allows rapid adaptation to overcome any CBRN contaminated environment. IN BRIEF Flycatcher makes a comeback Middle East upgrade US-based Datron World Communications (Stand N4-320) has just received an order from a Middle East customer to upgrade its diplomatic high-frequency radio and command systems worldwide. The contract revolves around Datron’s RT7700H HF transceiver in 125W, 500W, 1,000W and 5,000W configurations. Datron partnered with Frequentis Defense to deliver the command and control infrastructure. RT7700H JITC-certified systems have proven interoperability with other certified ALE radios.

RICHARD SCOTT Thales Nederland has restarted production of its Flycatcher Mk 2 integrated air defence search and tracking system on the back on a new order from Germany for a single system for range monitoring and measurement. Originally introduced in the late 1990s, the Flycatcher Mk 2 command and fire control centre provides the core of a hybrid, integrated layered air defence system able to simultaneously control both guns and missile systems. The system was sold to Venezuela, where it has been integrated with both 40mm guns and the Rafael Barak-1 surface-to-air missile.

Designed for rapid deployment and high mobility, the Flycatcher Mk 2 consists of two dedicated shelters on one trailer. The technical shelter hosts the radar equipment (with the associated radar/electrooptical director mounted above), while the operator shelter contains the operator consoles. The systems can be integrated with both 35mm and 40mm guns, and very shortrange air defence missiles. Thales has brought Flycatcher Mk 2 back to the market having last year received a â‚Ź16.8 million contract award from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service

Support (BAAINBw) to supply a single system. While this unit is intended for range monitoring only, the company believes there are a number of emerging international ground-based air defence requirements for which Flycatcher Mk 2 would be ideal.

Naval support vessels from South Korea

Earlier this month, Thales performed initial firing trials with the new Flycatcher Mk 2 at the Todendorf range (pictured). Integrated with two 40mm guns, the system demonstrated ‘‘excellent performance’’, said company sources. Q

South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME, Stand S8-268) is looking to grow its naval support vessel order book on the back of contract wins in the UK and Norway. The company, working in partnership with UK-based BMT Defence Services (Stand S3-360), is vying for orders in Australia and New Zealand. DSME was in March 2012 awarded a £452 million contract by the UK MoD to build four 37,000-ton MARS (Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability) tankers for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA). Based on a tailored variant of BMT’s generic Aegir design,

Day 3 p30-31.indd 5

these ships − to be the Tide class in service − will meet the long-standing requirement for new double-hulled fleet tankers. First-of-class RFA Tidespring was launched in April 2015, and is due to be handed over later this year. Following up on the MARS tanker success, DSME was in June 2013 contracted by the Norwegian MoD to build a new Logistic Support Vessel for the Royal Norwegian Navy. This vessel, a scaled-down derivative of the MARS tanker design, is due for handover in 2016 and will be named KNM Maud. DSME, working in conjunction with BMT, now seeks to capture new orders on either side of

the Tasman Sea. Last week, the company was shortlisted to compete with rival yard Hyundai Heavy Industries in a ‘best and final offer’ phase for New Zealand’s Maritime Sustainment Capability (MSC). MSC is intended to replace the navy’s replenishment tanker, HMNZS Endeavour, which retires in 2018. In Australia, DSME is up against Spanish shipyard Navantia for Australia’s Project 1654 Phase 3 Maritime Operational Support Capability requirement. This covers the build of two auxiliary oiler replenishment ships to replace HMAS Success and HMAS Sirius in navy service. Q

This system allows the charging of batteries of any electrochemistry, as well as USB-enabled devices. It can draw power from any DC input, including solar panels, vehicles or another battery.

As part of its ongoing R&D, Lincad was involved in Dstl’s Solar Soldier project, which assessed the feasibility of soldier-worn photovoltaic cells and thermoelectric devices to provide round-the-clock power. Now Lincad is working with Oxis Energy, Pure Wafer and Solutronic to develop robust, lightweight storage devices that can harvest solar energy for military use. Lincad’s involvement is mainly concerned with battery design. Lincad is also showing its Caravel Mk 2 charger, an improved version of the system that has been in use with the British Army and international customers for 15 years. Q

Military and peacekeeping forces, as well as humanitarian missions, go where they are required, often to the most inhospitable areas, where they might remain for months on end. That is how South African firm Canvas & Tent (Stand N3-110), in conjunction with KBR (Kellogg Brown & Root), built a long-standing relationship with the UK

Ministry of Defence to supply fully integrated redeployable camp systems for the armed forces. Having supplied its Centurion and Gladiator shelters to UK forces in Afghanistan, the company anticipates this relationship to continue. Besides accommodations, kitchens and mess halls, ablution, laundry, operations, medical and storage facilities, these turnkey solutions include complete infrastructure, from

Excalibur can fly up to 50km, score a direct hit and deliver lethal effects in all types of weather and battlefield conditions,’’ said Mark Hokeness, Raytheon’s Excalibur programme director. Raytheon has added a semi-active laser guidance capability to the round, creating an Excalibur-S dual-mode laser/GPS-guided variant designed to compensate for target location error, maintain precision in GPS denied or degraded environments, and enable engagement of relocated or moving targets. The dualmode guidance will inform development of the Excalibur N5 naval variant, which is intended for extended-range precision naval surface fires from existing 5in/127mm guns. Q

Liquid screening made simple Link Microtek (Stand S4-450) is boosting airport security with a new liquid explosive detection system (LEDS), EMILI 3, being shown for the first time at DSEI. Jointly developed by Link Microtek and Emisens, and approved to European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) Standard 3, EMILI 3 is an ECAC Type B LEDS designed for noninvasive screening of individual unopened bottles or other containers. EMILI 3 employs a combination of patented dual-mode radio frequency/ microwave, infrared and gravometric sensing technologies, which can identify

the contents of an unopened container within a second. No X-rays, high-power lasers, static magnetic fields or high voltages are involved and therefore the EMILI 3 scanner has none of the effects on heath and safety associated with other types of screening equipment. Measuring 720mm (h) x 540mm (w) x 540mm (d) and weighing 25kg, the scanner boasts a small enough footprint to be installed on any tabletop, with no special adaptations or Q consumables to replenish.
