Showers Pass was born from the desire to develop clothing and gear that would get more people out on their bikes, no matter the weather. Inspired by the challenging rides and variable conditions of Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, we have been combining high performance materials with innovative functional designs for cyclists since 1997. With our roots in high performance waterproof-breathable outerwear, we have grown to offer a wide range of apparel and unique accessories for anyone who faces the elements – from city dwellers heading to the pub to pro cyclists heading to the top of L’Alpe d’Huez.

HOW TO COMPARE

Showers Pass Waterproof Fabrics 3-LAYER FABRICS 3-layer fabrics consist of a waterproof membrane bonded between a face fabric and a liner fabric. In addition to being the most durable construction, 3-Layer waterproof fabrics are usually the most breathable and comfortable against the skin. The lining protects the waterproof membrane, so the membrane can be finer, with more pores that allow body heat to pass through – reducing the buildup of condensation – while blocking rain from the outside. That inner lining also wicks moisture, and lifts the waterproof membrane off the skin, reducing the “clammy” feel that is typical of lower priced waterproof fabrics. 3-layer hardshells are usually more expensive than 2 or 2.5-Layer shells, but offer a better solution for people that ride long distances in the rain or tend to overheat easily.

2.5-LAYER FABRIC 2.5-layer shells are made of a face fabric bonded to a waterproof membrane, with a raised printed pattern on the inside (the “half layer”) that helps protect the membrane from abrasion, body oils and other damage. 2.5-Layer waterproof fabrics offer the benefits of being lighter weight and more packable, but they are typically not as durable or breathable as their 3-layer counterparts. 2.5-layer shells are a good option for people looking for a lightweight packable jacket – a good choice for long distance riding when packability is a priority or on shorter commutes under about 7 miles.

2.5-Layer Construction

2-LAYER FABRIC 2-layer shells consist of a face fabric and waterproof membrane bonded together. Some 2-layer jackets feature a drop lining. This protects the membrane and increases comfort, but makes the jacket considerably heavier than a 3-layer jacket of the same performance. Without a drop lining, 2-layer fabrics are very easily degraded by abrasion and body oils. To combat this the membrane can be made thicker, but that leads to dramatically reduced breathability. For these reasons, we don’t generally use 2-layer fabrics in our jackets. Our clear Pro Tech ST jacket is the one exception, because it uses a unique 2-layer fabric construction with no face fabric. The two layers are the waterproof membrane (on the outside), and a thin tricot lining that lifts the membrane off your skin. The Pro Tech ST is our lightest weight jacket, but also the least breathable and most delicate jacket in our line. 2

1 STAR fabrics rate at least 1,000g/m2/day. Great for pre-race warm-ups or unexpected cloud bursts, but not recommended for long fast paced rides or warmer conditions.

1 STAR garments will at least be treated with a Durable Water Repellant (DWR) ﬁnish and/or have a tight weave and design that will provide some water repellency. Great for short rides in light/intermittent precipitation.

2 STAR fabrics rate at least 5,000g/m2/day. This provides some moisture vapor transfer, but if you’re riding hard enough to sweat, especially in cold and rainy conditions, you will probably see some condensation on the inside of the garment. 3 STAR fabrics rate at least 10,000g/m2/day, and the garments have some venting capability. Most people can stay comfortable in these garments, especially if they take advantage of venting capabilities like pit or core vents, 2-way front zippers, or open cuffs. 4 STAR fabrics rate at least 10,000g/m2/day, might have wicking linings, and the garments have multiple venting options. Wicking linings aid in the efficiency of moisture vapor transfer, and provide a drier next-to-skin feel. 2 STAR garments will use fabrics rated 3,000mm-10,000mm or even higher, but might have strategic panels of non-waterproof fabric, or unsealed seams. Generally designed to be waterproof in the areas where you’re most likely to get hit by raindrops and road spray, but not designed to keep you completely dry in a downpour. 3 STAR garments use only fabrics rated at least 10,000mm, but might not be entirely seam sealed. These will keep you dry in most conditions, but you might see localized areas of leakage in extended downpours. 4 STAR garments will use only fabrics rated 3,000-15,000mm, and have taped or welded seams. Bring on the rain, snow, wind, sleet, hail, drizzle, fog, and mud. If all your vents, zippers, cuffs and collar are sealed, these garments should keep the elements out for most rides. 5 STAR garments will have fabrics rated at least 15,000mm, and have taped or welded seams. If you’re going to be out in nasty weather for extended periods of time, these are the garments for you! Just make sure to seal all your vents, zippers, cuffs and collar before stepping out into a downpour.

As leaders in technical cycling outerwear we offer a variety of waterproof cycling jackets utilizing different fabrics, different fit styles, and with different intended uses. The price range you see among waterproof jackets does not just relate to the level of waterproofness. It also relates to breathability; and special features like vents, zippers, adjustable cuffs, pockets and reflective trims. Not every cyclist needs a carbon fiber race bike, and not every cyclist wants to spend as much on a cycling jacket as they do on their bike. We believe our line of waterproof cycling outerwear offers the best in class fabrics and features at every price level, for professionals riding the Milan San Remo to entry level riders and everyone in between.

Artex Performance Fabrics protect from wind, rain, and snow - and help you stay dry from the inside out. These proprietary fabrics are waterproof, breathable and feature durable layered construction.

Clean Color Technology uses Bluesign System approved dyes, which keep harmful chemicals out of the manufacturing process, protecting people and the planet.

The MapREflect fabric design is made up of 11 international cities known for cycling. The map patten illuminates for maximum visibility as headlights approach. In addition to being reflective, MapReflect fabric is waterproof, slightly stretchy and features a brushed lining for comfort and warmth.

Bamboo-Merino Cool Tech fabric combines two natural fibers (Merino Wool and Bamboo), knit together to provide a lightweight fabric with the performance benefits of Merino wool, and the soft feel of a synthetic-but without the smell.

Sustainability: Doing the Right Thing for the Product, the People and the Planet

For the past 25 years, building quality products that last has been our approach to sustainability. Choosing materials for durability as well as performance has earned

us a reputation for quality and an extremely low warranty rate. We are proud of our ability to quickly identify common failure points and design them out of each iteration of our products. Despite our growing business, we have fewer and fewer damaged/returned items to sell at our warehouse sale each year.

From an ecological perspective, however, this focus on making durable products is not enough to meet the growing environmental challenges we face today. We’ve looked at the ways in which our manufacturing processes impact the environment, and identified areas for improvement. Our goal is to make a meaningful change to our environmental impacts, without sacrificing the durability and high level of performance we demand from our products. This is a balancing act: how do we do the right thing for the product, the people, and the planet? A “Recycled” Label is Not Enough Including more recycled content in our products is among our goals, but it does not address the biggest environmental impacts of producing waterproof-breathable technical apparel. The energy used to power production facilities and the chemicals used in textile dyeing and production are often the cause of the most pollution in the manufacturing chain. The bluesign® system works to combat this by uniting the entire textile supply chain to jointly reduce its impact by eliminating substances posing risks to people and the environment from the beginning of the supply chain. We are already using bluesign® certified dyes on our new Clean Color apparel collection, and plan to expand that line with each factory build, eventually moving to bluesign® certified dyes for all our products. The factory that produces 80% of our garments is already bluesign® certified, as is our primary fabric mill and we are committed to helping our other factory partners achieve bluesign® certification over the coming years. 6

While our impact as a small-medium sized company cannot save the world, we will act as though it will. Perhaps we can inspire others to follow suit, and tackle these issues as a global community. The Long-Range Plan: Showers Pass Sustainability Goals for 2025 1. 100% of our products will be made with a minimum of 50% or more recycled content. 2. All Apparel will be made with bluesign® approved dyes in bluesign® approved factories. 3. 100% of wool will meet the Responsible Wool Standard, and be sourced from farms that treat animals humanely, where mulesing is not practiced. 4. Showers Pass US will have a product end-of-life recycling program. 5. All Showers Pass packaging will be made from Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood or recycled material, and have the ability to be recycled or composted. 6. Showers Pass’ US headquarters will be carbon positive, generating more energy than it consumes and we will encourage factory partners to get at least 50% of their energy from renewable sources as well.

175 Million Hours Outside In October 2021 we launched the “Enjoy All Elements” program, challenging its customers to spend 175 million hours in inclement weather by 2031. The campaign is centered around removing the obstacles that stand in the way of enjoying outdoor activities in rain, wind, sun, and cold. Challengers can share and record their hours playing in the elements on social media using the #EnjoyAllElements tag, or by utilizing the challenge hub at enjoyallelements.com. For each hour logged, Showers Pass will increase its contribution to Outdoors Empowered Network, a national network of community-led, youth-centered outdoor education groups that are dedicated to increasing access and diversity in the outdoors through gear libraries and outdoor leadership training.

“Showers Pass has always been about making cycling and outdoor activity enjoyable in any weather,” says Sarah Jean Charniak, Marketing Director at Showers Pass. “This new commitment continues in that tradition, by challenging people to get out more, while at the same time helping to remove barriers to get outside. We’re excited to see how the monetary and in-kind support raised will improve outdoor access for many communities.” Outdoors Empowered Network supports more than twenty gear libraries throughout the United States, reducing one of the biggest barriers to entry for hundreds of thousands of young people that want to engage in outdoor adventuring. “More time outside means healthier, happier humans and a deeper connection to nature,” says Charniak, “and that’s ultimately what we’re trying to achieve.”
