Neste momento conturbado que todos estamos atravessando no país e no mundo, o audiovisual demonstra sua força e poder. Ganhou relevância, tanto como forma de entretenimento como de informação. As obras audiovisuais são frutos de trabalho coletivo de mentes criativas e técnicas nas mais diversas telas. Em cada país as produções são fomentadas por diferentes fontes de financiamento. No Brasil, mecanismos de incentivos públicos são a principal fonte de fomento que induz, estimula e atrai o capital privado nas formas de investimento e/ou patrocínio. Em meio às mudanças de prioridades nas políticas públicas para a área da cultura e, em especial, o audiovisual, sofremos os abalos irreparáveis de uma pandemia global e ainda as disruptivas transformações tecnológicas de distribuição e fruição de conteúdos audiovisuais. É nesse contexto que surge uma iniciativa inédita, parceria entre Brazilian Content, Cinema do Brasil e Projeto Paradiso: o “SHOW ME THE FUND”, um mapeamento exclusivamente produzido para os players brasileiros que traz luz ao primeiro e fundamental elo da cadeia produtiva: os agentes financiadores. Compilamos um extenso material sobre recursos internacionais disponíveis para as mais diversas fases das produções brasileiras, do desenvolvimento à distribuição. Selecionamos 50 iniciativas de financiamento pesquisadas pela LatAm cinema que apresentamos de maneira didática em dez fichas reunidas em publicações quinzenais. In this troubled moment that we are all going through in the country and in the world, the audiovisual sector demonstrates its strength and power. It gained unprecedented relevance as a form of entertainment and information. Audiovisual works are the result of collective work of creative and technical minds on a great range of screens. Each country has its own way of encouraging production through different sources of financing. In Brazil, public incentive mechanisms are the main source of funding that urges, stimulates and attracts private capital as investment and / or sponsorship. In the middle of all the changes in the public policies priorities for culture and especially audiovisual, we are suffering the irreparable adversities of a global pandemic and also the disruptive technological transformation in the distribution and enjoyment of audiovisual content. This is the context for the appearance of this unprecedented initiative, a partnership among Brazilian Content, Cinema do Brasil and Projeto Paradiso: “SHOW ME THE FUND”, a roadmap exclusively produced for Brazilian players that unveils the first and fundamental link in the production chain: the financing agents. We have compiled an extensive material on international resources available for the most diverse phases of Brazilian productions, from development to distribution. We selected 50 funding initiatives researched by LatAm cinema that we now present in a didactic way in forms that will be published fortnightly. Projeto Paradiso provides high-value support mechanisms for Brazilian talents in the audiovisual sector, with a focus on fiction films and series that connect with their audiences. We invest in professional training building through fellowships, mentoring programs, workshops and studies, looking to champion screenwriting and script development as well as audience design.

WOMEN IN FILM FILM FINISHING FUND Los Angeles’ based Women In Film (WIF) is a non-profit organization that “advocates for and advances the careers of women working in the screen industries to achieve parity and transform culture.” Through this fund, a select group of films—from any genre or format—is awarded grants in cash and “in-kind” production services to complete projects that fit the criteria of being by or about women. The Fund awards four grants per year. Since its inception in 1985, the Film Finishing Fund has awarded over two million dollars to 280 films from all over the globe.

GENDER ISSUES

Projects must meet one of the following two criteria: Credit a writer and director who identifies as a woman; or credit a writer or director who identifies as a woman and include a protagonist who identifies as a woman. To apply for the Fund, the filmmaker must have completed 90% of principal photography and have a rough cut at the time of application. You don’t have to be a Women In Film member to apply, and Non-English language submissions must have English subtitles included on the rough cut at the time of submission.

FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS (FWB) FWB is an educational nonprofit organization that provides funding and support to empower the next generation of digital storytellers through grants, educational resources, and international fellowships. Supported projects include narrative films, documentary films, and new media projects that are in line with themes of social justice, empowerment, and cultural exchange.

Although the financial amounts granted are low, FWB’s support can serve as a cover letter to other funding opportunities. The Fund is also open to experimental, new media, and animation (shorts) projects.


ORGANISER: INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL AMSTERDAM / BERTHA FOUNDATION

IBF CLASSIC – PROJECT DEVELOPMENT The IDFA Bertha Fund (IBF) supports independent, critical, and artistic voices from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe with the aim of stimulating and empowering the creative documentary sector in these regions. The Fund is looking for films that use strong visual treatments to tell compelling stories and have the potential to reach a global audience. IBF also offers other co-production and distribution support schemes. In this case, submissions must be presented by the European co-producer.

This is one of the most established funds for documentaries. Although it has two funding schemes -Project Development, and Production & Post-production- only the first one is open to projects from Brazil. The contribution can be spent on research, development of the screenplay and/ or production of a trailer, and must be spent in the above-mentioned region. Since its inception in 1998, the IDFA Bertha Fund has supported 13 documentaries films from Brazil.


ORGANISER: INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY ASSOCIATION

PARE LORENTZ DOCUMENTARY FUND The Fund supports documentary films that exhibit “objective research, artful storytelling, strong visual style, high production values, artistic writing, and outstanding music composition, as well as skillful direction, camerawork and editing.” Although it is open to international filmmakers, the production and post-production grants must be used in the creation of original, independent documentary films that “illuminate issues in the United States”.

Each year, the Fund brings different issue areas that were hallmarks of Pare Lorentz’s films into focus (in 2020, it was criminal justice.) Expenses may include line items such as photography, travel or equipment rental, among others. The project should have the bulk of research and development completed, having ahead substantial production and post-production work.

This pan-regional program has been one of the driving forces behind the Ibero-American audiovisual industry. In recent years, it has been updated to include animation and series. 100% of the aid granted in Development must be repaid before the shooting. Regarding Co-production, the money to be repaid is deducted from the project’s net income.

RE:FOCUS FUND / FILM FINANCE FORUM Launched by Canada’s largest LGBTQ film festival, Inside Out's RE:Focus Fund aims to address industry inequities through providing direct financial support to women, non-binary, and / or trans filmmakers telling LGBTQ stories. The world's only LGBTQ Film Finance Forum, as well as Post-Production Grants, are also among Inside Out's initiatives, which are open to international projects.

Both the Fund and the Forum share the same goal, and are still in the process of consolidation. Since its creation, the Fund has distributed more than USD 150,000 in festival travel grants, professional development programs, and post-production costs. The Forum, meanwhile, is an unique opportunity to pitch projects directly to top international industry executives.

SFFILM SLOAN STORIES OF SCIENCE DEVELOPMENT FUND This Fund aims to support the development of narrative feature screenplays adapted from the stories behind recent scientific discoveries or technological themes. The scripts must be inspired by an article catalogued in the SFFILM Sloan Stories of Science Sourcebook, which compiles compelling reported articles and momentous recent discoveries in the scientific and technological fields.

Eligible films must portray scientific themes at their center that directly drive the story arc and/or character development forward. Awardees must attend a writer’s retreat in San Francisco (international flights are partially covered.) Science fiction films are not allowed to apply. The Fund runs every two years.

THE ATHENA LIST The Athena List is an annual script competition that selects exceptional scripts with women leaders at the heart of the story. Its goal is to raise the profile of the scripts and the writers within the industry with the purpose of getting these movies made and elevating their careers to the next level.

WIFV SEED FUND FOR DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKERS The non-profit organization behind this initiative works towards gender balance in the industry and looks to support the work of its members. This Fund's economic endowment aims to allow directors to enhance their projects, rendering them eligible for larger grants.

THE GOLDEN SCRIPT COMPETITION Glasgow’s based The Golden Script is a yearly competition for short, feature and TV pilot screenplays from all around the world. Each year in July, the organisers promote the 30 best scripts in the competition by creating a list (“The Golden List”) that will be read by some of the greatest production companies & literary agencies.

In spite of their rather modest awards, this kind of competitions are an opportunity to draw mid-sized studios attention, some of which have won several OSCARS and BAFTA. The Feature Contest offers free written feedback to every entrant; Diverse Voices is a screenplay contest and lab focused on stories in any format that are told “from perspectives that are often underrepresented in Hollywood today”; while the TV Pilot Contest mission is to discover and expose new talent to the entertainment industry.


Brazilian Content is a project that fosters the export and promotion of audiovisual content made by Brazilian companies. The project is focused on the improvement and growth of Brazilian companies, it expedites the access to content markets and festivals, offers exclusive training programs and consultancy, and access to business intelligence reports. Brazilian Content represents 178 companies from all over Brazil and was created in 2004, in a partnership between Brasil Audiovisual Independente, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), and the Audiovisual Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture.

Cinema do Brasil aims to reinforce and expand the participation of Brazilian audiovisual productions in the international market, to encourage the development of co-productions and the distribution of Brazilian films abroad. It is an export program implemented in 2006 by the São Paulo’s Audiovisual Industry Guild - SIAESP.

Projeto Paradiso is an initiative of the Olga Rabinovich Institute that provides high–value support mechanisms for Brazilian talents in the audiovisual sector, with a focus on fiction films and series that connect with their audiences. We invest in professional training and capacity building through fellowships, mentoring programs, workshops, seminars and studies, nurturing a network of professionals in Brazil. Focused on internationalization, we work through partnerships with well-known institutions, thereby connecting national talent with training and business opportunities around the world.

LatAm cinema is the leading trade media platform covering the Latin American film industry. Aimed at professionals and the general public, our website, newsletters, e-magazines, and social networks provide relevant timely information to discover, promote and finance new projects and businesses. Created in 2007 and based in Montevideo, our team of contributors is made up of industry insiders based in different countries in the region.
