Rift White Oak is known for strength and stability and celebrated for visual consistency and accepting a variety of finish treatments well. The “rift” in Rift White Oak is a nod to the riftsawn method used to cut White Oak in the milling process.
The riftsawn method produces a tightly-striped linear grain pattern with minimal interruption from perpendicular rays or flecks, also known as medullary rays, or commonly referred to as ray flecking.
Ray flecking is natural in the White Oak wood species and is visibly either accentuated or minimized by the method of milling. The riftsawn method produces lumber that minimizes ray flecking by keeping the ray fleck running in the same direction as the grain pattern on primary surfaces like the face of stiles, rails, and center panels, the main components of a door or drawer header.
Ray flecking that opposes the grain, or is accentuated, may be present on the outside edges of door styles and cabinet face frames and any profiled stiles, rails or center panels on doors or drawer headers.
Consistent with other cabinetry manufacturers, Showplace Cabinetry does allow for 20% non-riftsawn (flatsawn or quartersawn) White Oak to be present on Rift White Oak orders.
