As Described by Nick Reimann ... My Biggest Influence in the Industry: John Griswold, Stillwater, OK Favorite Donor: 4-705, an Irish Whiskey female. She is the dam of the Champion Steer at the Minnesota and Louisiana State Fair, Reserve Grand Champion Heifer at Iowa State Fair and Champion MaineTainer Steer at the Iowa State Fair Favorite Breed of Cattle: I just like a good one - any breed, any color. All-Time Favorite Champion We Raised: Nick Sullivan’s smoke heifer that won the 2011 Iowa Beef Expo and the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Feeding Program/Regimen: I believe it is most important to feed any animal - steer, heifer or cow/calf pair - fresh feed. Proudest Moment/Biggest Accomplishment to Date: To have sold both the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Steers at the 2006 American Royal Steer Show. Heard Health: To prevent rubbing, we worm and pour our cattle monthly. Sires Used for 2013 Calf Crop: We mainly continue to use Heat Wave because he continues to work! Favorite Barn Tool: The Air Express III Double Blower system. Every single blower in our show barn is the Double Blower system and we use them every day. Future Goals: We hope to breed more powerful females/donor cattle for our First Class Female Sale. We are going to expand this part of our operation to make the best females possible. Favorite Sire of the 90’s: Full Flush Favorite Sire of the 2000’s: Heat Wave What is your biggest challenge of breeding cattle: Definitely the South Dakota weather. Also, when I was showing cattle we could breed to bulls and get a good heifer or a steer regardless. But now when we breed we have to make the choice. Do we want to try to breed for a steer, or do we breed one completely different and try for a heifer. Any advice to those wanting to develop a cow herd: As long as you work hard and stay focused on your goal, you can do about anything you want too.

Owners: Nick, Kyrstin and Croix Reimann Kent and Nora Reimann Barry and Jill Reimann Location: Ree Heights, SD Cow Herd: 1,000 bred heifers and cows Herd Mechanics: 1/3 Angus Females 1/3 Maternal Females (Sim/Maine) 1/3 Club/Calf Females Years in the Industry: 20 plus

Marketing Opportunities: Private Treaty Pasture Sale, third weekend in September, at the Ranch, Ree Heights, SD First Class Female Sale, first weekend in December, Dunlap, Iowa Meeting America’s youth by being a Stock Show University Professor

From The Editor

Welcome to the Future

Changing the Livestock Show Industry in 2012

F â–şCover Design: The Showtimes, Inc.

ive years ago The Showtimes Jr. Livestock Magazine was just an idea. We hoped it would be a nice publication that would cover Colorado and Wyoming. We had no idea that it would become the national magazine it is today. Our first issue of 2012 is our most exciting issue so far! The January/February 2012 Stock Show Edition not only offers the same great features we have offered in the past, but introduces new possibilites for livestock magazines. From our unique cover that opens from the middle, to our special feature on Building The Showtimes, you are sure to enjoy this issue! We've even included articles on us, the owners. Starting on page 35, we offer a preview of the National Western Stock Show and the Fort Worth Stock Show. This issue is filled with show results ranging from the Americal Royal and NAILE, to the Badger Kick-Off Classic and

Hoosier Beef Congress. Dianna Elder is this issue's Show Mom! Read her story on page 74. Finally, we offer two exhibitor articles on Kari Brumley and the Heaton Family! The National Western has always been one of our favorite times of year. Just a few years ago we were sleeping in our truck in the pig line, fitting our market steers for the drive, and participating in the junior livestock auction in Denver. Now, instead of showing junior market animals we are promoting The Showtimes. Look for us at this year's National Western. We will be there every day from January 7-22. Be sure to stop by our booth in the Livestock Center in the yards! We hope you enjoy our favorite issue to date! Happy 2012,

Brian J. Reid Owner / Editor

Mark Sneed

Exhibitor of Multiple National Grand Champion Steers & Current Owner of Maximum Exposure

ark Sneed was born and raised in Ewing, Illinois on a 1,700 acre farming and livestock operation. A strong work ethic was instilled in Mark at an early age, and was further encouraged through the death of his father when Mark was 12 years old. Mark's family was continuously involved in the 4-H program for over 40 consecutive years. Mark's interest was particularly strong in the cattle aspects of the livestock industry. He spent many years and miles on the road with his 4-H projects attending shows across the country. Mark had the honor of exhibiting the Grand Champion Steer at the North American International Livestock Exhibition (NAILE) in 1983, 1984, and 1985 and also the Grand Champion Steer at the American Royal in 1986. This was a particularly proud moment for Mark, as he only fed one steer per year. After high school, Mark

attended Rendlake Jr. College and continued his education at Southern Illinois University majoring in Agricultural Education and Mechanization with a minors in Animal Science and Computer Programming. While in college, Mark was named High Overall Individual at the Midsouth Livestock Judging Contest. Mark owned a professional fitting service for four years after college and then moved into a district manager sales position with Vigortone Chemical Company. With Vigortone, Mark covered 18 counties and a million and a half dollars in sales per year. After Vigortone, Mark was employed with Golden Harvest Seed Company for the next six years. While selling chemicals, Mark still remained close with the livestock industry and realized his heart was truly in the cattle sector of livestock. With that, he moved to Ohio to start a cattle order buying position. It was while in this position, Mark realized that one of the most important marketing tools was photography and internet tools. This sparked Mark's idea of starting his own livestock marketing company. In 2003, Mark went to Denver to start his professional career as a livestock marketer

through photography at the National Western Stock Show. Word of mouth spread and the business has not slowed down since. As many in the cattle livestock industry know, Mark’s name has been seen and continues to be seen on many of the top operation’s photographs throughout the country. Mark Sneed is a household name in the cattle industry we all know and love, whether people know him personally or have just seen his name under a beautiful photograph, he is recognized. His work is tremendous and he takes great pride in putting out the best there is in livestock marketing through photographs and now videos. ▪ The Showtimes would like to congratulate Mark Sneed on becoming the 16th member of The Showtimes Hall of Fame! Embryos on Snow EMBRYOS ON SNOW ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP AWARD TO BE PRESENTED

The Embryos on Snow Sale is an elite auction featuring some of the best genetics in the seedstock business. The sale is held each January in Denver, Colorado, during the National Western Stock Show. The auction consists of embryos from leading donor dams, rare semen, as well as other select lots. The selection process is backed by the knowledge and past success of the marketing team and the breeders who helped start it. Many successful programs have lined the foundation of this impressive annual sale. Sale entry is by invitation and genetics featured in the Embryos on Snow are exclusive to this sale offering.

Embryos on Snow

In 2011, the announcement of the Embryos on Snow Scholarship Program was made. The majority of the sale’s 2011 commissionable proceeds, in addition to a generous sponsorship made by TRANSOVA Genetics, will serve as the first scholarship to be awarded. The name of the scholarship was changed in June 2011 to “La Prix.” The winner of the first contest will receive $10,000 and the runner up will be presented with a $3,000 award. Applicants must be between the ages of 19 and 21 (as of July 1st in the year of application) and have some cattle and farm or ranch background. An applicant must hold American or Canadian citizenship and have some past knowledge of the Embryos on Snow program. Applicants will be narrowed down by a committee of judges and the final award winner will be selected by an alternate committee through an interview process to be held during the National Western. “La Prix” is an essay type contest that will seek to find the young people that have a great deal of ambition, knowledge and ability. The essay contest will not be based on writing ability, rather on content, creativity and the future intent of a young person. An applicant may have any goal, collegiate major or career in mind. More information on the Embryos on Snow auction can be found at collinscattleservices.com or embryosonsnow.com.

Don MacLennan Shares His Thoughts on Evaluating Cattle

M

BY DON MACLENNAN, CO

y name is Don MacLennan and I will be part of the committee that will judge the market steers at The National Western Stock Show.

My wife, Lynn, and I have 4 grown children and recently became grandparents and are enjoying every minute of it. I grew up on a cattle ranch in eastern Colorado and attended Northeastern Oklahoma A & M. I was part of a very successful livestock judging team that won 4 out of 6 major contests.

When asked if I would be willing to be part of this committee I was excited and humbled at the same time. I grew up sitting in the green chairs of the stadium arena watching judges like Joe Lewis, Gary Minish, Harlen Ritchie and many more evaluate the market steers and thought what an honor it would be to get the opportunity to sort the steers at the National Western.

nitely need to balance up and look like a show steer when viewed from the side. When a steer travels away it is important that they stay the same width all the way to the ground. I really don’t have a specific window for weight but I suppose in order for them to be mature enough to reach an acceptable quality grade while at the same time maintaining an acceptable carcass weight they probably need to be in that 1290 to 1350 range. They should have at least .4 to .5 tenths back fat and handle fresh to the touch. Again, I will sacrifice some of these to gain soundness! Complete is the word that best summarizes the kind of steer that gets me most excited, if you bring a fresh, big bodied, thick ended steer that is super sound you should do quite well! Don pictured with the Adams County Livestock Judging Team in Gunnison, Colorado. They were the Reserve Champion Senior Team in 2002.

My family has been involved in the registered cattle business for over 30 years and have witnessed many fads come and go. Most were short lived as producers figured out, pretty quickly, that those kinds of cattle just don’t work! As far as the type of cattle I prefer I guess structural correctness and design are my starting point. I like my cattle to be athletes, whether its steers bulls or heifers, I believe a good structural foundation means longevity which, economically, puts dollars in a producer’s pocket. I do like powerfully muscled cattle but will sacrifice some muscle to gain soundness. I think it is important that steers have the right kind of body style and muscle shape and they defi-

Market Beef Judge

Chris Mullinix Shares His Thoughts on Evaluating Cattle BY CHRIS MULLINIX, KS

Dear National Western Exhibitors, Families and Spectators,

I

can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to have the honor of judging the Junior Market Steer Show at the 2012 National Western! Denver has always been a special place with a unique heritage and the feel of a true cattlemen’s event. Working with respected evaluators Don MacLennan and Troy Thomas in the first three judge system will offer a unique twist to what is annually considered one of the premier steer shows in the country!

As I write this letter to you, I express my gratitude in having faith in the three of us to treat this event with the kind of dignity and effort it so richly deserves. I truly believe the National Western to be one of U.S. Agriculture’s historic treasures. I was first captivated by “The Yards” and “The Hill” as a naive eleven year old in January of 1986. Talk about awestruck! You see, I grew up in the state of Maryland with strong agriculture roots, a love for our Hereford breeding cattle, a passion for showring competition and the thought that our 1,500 head feedyard was “huge.” My how my perspective changed with that first tour of the Greeley area feedyards and the National Western Stock Show. I think I fell in love that week. I fell in love with the tradition of Denver, the aura of its events, the quality of the cattle and most importantly – the people it brings together. That year, this scared 11-year old and his crazy father took the National Western by storm with our newly acquired video camera. Dad was the camera man and I was the anchorman. I had no idea what I had gotten into, but I’m sure I would have made Will 40 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

Farrell proud. I look back now and realize what a great adventure we had. In that week, I interviewed industry icons like Glen Chris exhibiting at the 2011 National Western Klippenstein and Dr. Don Good. Their passion was obvious, but I had no idea they were planting seeds for my future. The trip wasn’t all work though. I ate my first mountain oysters. I saw my first rodeo. But most importantly, I remember sitting ringside just mesmerized by the cattle and waiting on the decisions and words of the “men behind the microphone.” Today, I’m proud to be one of those “men behind the microphone” and take that honor very seriously. I’m proud of my practical family farm heritage and the opportunities my parents gave me growing up. Fortunately, I was able to complement that home knowledge with great 4-H leadership, fierce and yet healthy competition (primarily with my brother and best friend Randy) and a group of friends, breeders and coaches that saw something in me they wanted to help develop. That laid the foundation for a decision that would forever alter my life. In the fall of 1992, I traveled half-way across the country to pursue an Animal Science degree at Kansas State University. There, I found my second home. I knew a total of two people; professor emeritus, Dr. Don Good and one student – the son of Glen Klippenstein. My National Western ties had paid off! The next four years gave me incredible moments, tremendous knowledge and a group of faculty like Don Good, Miles McKee,

Market Hog Judge

2012 Fort Worth Judge Bob Listen Talks Market Hogs

H

BY BOB LISTEN, OK

ello, I am Bob Listen and I live in El Reno OK where I have been the Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA Advisor for 21 years. I grew up in Jones, Ok on a spotted hog farm which my dad also raised quarter horses and Brangus cattle. I attended Eastern Oklahoma State College on a livestock judging scholarship and went on to Oklahoma State University and was a member of the 1989 National Champion Livestock judging team. My wife Alecia and I have been married for 21 years and have two children, Collin- 20 who is a sophomore at Redlands Community College and Daughter Kaylin -17 who is a junior at El Reno High School. I have had the fortune to judge many shows across the United States. My 1st “Big one” that I can remember was the Indiana State Fair Spotted Breeding show at the age of 22 and have been judging ever since. From there I have judged the Missouri, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, and West Texas State Fairs, Fall Classic Breeding Swine shows in Duncan, NJSA Summer Spectacular Junior Gilt show, American Royal Breeding swine shows, San Antonio Junior Gilt and Barrow Shows and many County, District and Regional shows across Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Kansas and Illinois. I guess my approach on judging junior market shows is somewhat simple but one that I take quite seriously. I try to be as consistent as possible and give every exhibitor a fair and honest evaluation of their hog. There will be many good ones drove at you and many that can win the whole show under many different judges, so taking the responsibility in finding that one that suits me the best is a factor that I don’t 44 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

take lightly. My priorities usually begin at the ground and will build upward. If you get the feet right on a pig and get a solid foundation from the size of toe and squarness of the foot, Then you have mastered alot of problems from the get go. Structural correctness is a must. The right angles to the feet and legs and how they balance with the rest of the skeleton is important in finding a sound show pig. With all the mass and power that you have to have today to compete, a solid square feet and leg placement is a must. Proper width would be my next priority. I like hogs that are wide skeletoned and square at their knee and hock with correct angulations. I tend to shy away from narrow hogs and hogs that are too wide or get outside their skeleton with their feet and legs. Next I like a big rib cage that has curvature and depth, flat or hard ribbed hogs tend to be harder doers and have finicky appetites. Moderate finished hogs that have fresh full bodies and deep flanks are preferred without getting too excessive in fat cover or too full where it takes the balance away from your hog. Above moderate frame size is perfect for me avoiding hogs that are too tall and stringy and pigs that are small short and quick. From there I would say design and balance are important to me. Good square level hips with great pin set and squareness from pin set to hock is what I like. Balanced ham loins and correct blade to fore loin transitions is important is finding a level designed attractive show pig. A clean stout skull with good extension of neck with little evidence of crest is also important. Freshness and hair and skin coat tells allot about what’s been going on with the hog in the last 30 days prior to the show. A show pig looks best when his chine is laid down between a big square blade and his hair and skin is attractive and fresh. I don’t prefer hogs to be clipped zipped and ripped; I

like them to have a fresh hair coat with some length but with an attractive look or natural clip. Finally I like hogs that are powerful and heavy muscled, but not that round tight muscle, I like a squarer shape that is big and bold coming out of their blade to their fore loin and having a square look from behind from pin set to hock. Therefore, I would say a productive, power hog with the “Look” should describe my next champion. Many ask about what is the ideal show weight for me and it’s hard to say, I would guess between 240-280 pounds. I say that because as I look back I don’t think I can say that I have never not used the best one in my mind at any of the previous shows that I have judged, and for market shows I can remember using a 239 pound hog and all the way up to 280, so quality prevails for me, I don’t get caught up in the weight game, If my grand weighs 265 that would be great, but if 265 is not the best one he will probably not win on that particular day.

1965

In closing, I have built my life around my family, helping young people, and showing hogs and enjoy every minute of it. Showing Livestock to me is one of the most important things a young person could do in building friendships, learning responsibility, and gaining life skills that you can only learn in 4-H and FFA. I have been very blessed to meet allot of great people in this industry and to judge many elite hog shows across the nation but the thing that I enjoy the most is seeing a young person that has poured his or her heart into a show project get out there and display their “final Product” onto a state or national stage and see the pride on their face and the focus in their eye that all the hard work, sweat and tears has finally paid off and it was worth it.

export statistics from USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (January – October), the U.S. remained the largest beef exporter in the world, outpacing Brazil and Australia for the first time since 2003. U.S. beef export volume has increased 24 percent over the same period in 2010. Beef export value for October was $452 million, pushing the 2011 total to a new annual record of $4.49 billion and will eclipse $5 billion for the first time in the history of U.S. beef exports. This value is 37 percent ahead of the then-record pace established in the first 10 months of 2010. Top destinations for U.S. beef exports includes Mexico, Canada, the Middle East, Japan and South Korea. What does this mean to you as livestock producers, and why should you care? The U.S. red meat export market continues to grow and along with it so does the chance for profit in our livestock

industry. The importance of U.S. beef exports added nearly $203 to the value of a market ready steer or heifer. This is nearly $50 per head higher than last year’s average of $153.09. On the pork front, more than one of four pigs raised here in the United States will end up being consumed in another country. U.S. pork exports in October were record-large in value, at $573.85 million and up 41 percent from last year. Export volume was up 24 percent. This pushed cumulative 2011 exports 17 percent higher than last year at 1.822 million metric tons, and value up 26 percent to $4.928 billion-- already a new annual record. U.S. pork exports added value of $54.68 per head. This compares to $43.72 per head last year. Our top markets for U.S. pork exports on a volume basis include Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong/ China, Canada and South Korea. One of the key reasons behind this year’s success has been

a surge in exports to South Korea, which is facing a domestic pork shortage due to a recent footand-mouth disease outbreak. The Korean government has taken progressive measures this year to allow duty-free access for imported pork, which normal faces tariffs in the 22 percent to 25 percent range. The U.S. pork industry has capitalized in a big way, already shipping more pork to Korea – 161,118 mt valued at $418 million. This is an increase of 182 percent, and already a new annual record. The U.S. has been blessed with some of the most productive land in the world and most productive people who dedicate their lives to improving all types of agriculture. Our farmers today through modern agriculture produce enough food to feed 155 people. The next time you care for your livestock, remember that not only does America Need Farmers so does the world! ▪

Meet the Exhibitor

H

i there, my name is Kari. I am 21 years old, and I am a junior at California State University, Stanislaus, studying liberal studies and math. I grew up on a rice farm in California, raising registered Hereford cattle. In 2005, my family moved to Orovada, Nevada, to expand our cow heard and start a meadow grass and alfalfa hay operation. We currently run over 100 registered cows, and 800 acres of hay. I started showing cattle when I was seven years old. I remember the day my Dad, Don, and Mom, Skeeter, bought me my first heifer. Her name was “Cassidy, she was a Hereford, of course, and after my first show I was hooked. From that day and every day since then, I live and breathe the cattle industry. When I was nine years old I became very involved in 4-H. I was involved in the beef and horse groups. When I started high school I became very involved in FFA. I participated in parliamentary procedure, marketing, beef proficiency, and I also took a steer to fair each year. I served as Chapter Secretary my junior year, and Chapter Vice President my senior year of high school. From the time I was seven my heart was with Hereford cattle, I showed at many shows in the state of California. When I was nine I attended my first Denver National Western Stock Show. I purchased a heifer in the Mile High Hereford sale. That summer I attended my first junior national. 2000 was the

first combined Junior National Hereford Expo. My family made the drive to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the event. I was second in both of my classes, and I won the Jr. National Pee-Wee Show-

68 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

manship contest. When we got home, I told my parents I had set some goals. I told them we were going to win Junior Nationals, and I was going to be the first person to win all four age divisions of showmanship. Since my first Junior National in Tulsa, in 2000, I have not missed one. In 2001 Junior Nationals was held in Billings, Montana, and my sister, Brooke, joined me, for her first Junior National. My sister and I work side by side everyday in the barn, we are best friends and starting in April

we can be found in the show barn working on the cattle. Usually it is with the radio playing loud, and us laughing over something. Anyone that knows us knows that when it comes to farm and showing it is a family affair. We support each other every step of the way. We have the best parents in the world who have given us everything we could dream of, and then some. They have hauled us kids all over the nation, from Louisville to Milwaukee to Kansas City to Denver, they have done it all. Dad

always washes, Mom cooks and helps work hair, while Brooke and I brush, blow and work hair. My brother, Bryce, also plays a big role. Although, he does not attend all of the shows, he takes care of the ranch at home, so that we can be gone with the cattle. I will be ending my junior show career this year. I will be attending my last Jr. National in 2012 in Grand Island, Nebraska. I have so much to look back on, and I will start my final year knowing

I have accomplished so much over the years. In 2005, I won the Jr. National Bred and Owned Heifer Show. In 2008, I won the Jr. National Owned Heifer Show, and I went on to win the National Western Stock Show in Denver with the same heifer, BF Flirtatious 713T ET. At this year’s Jr. National in Kansas City, I fulfilled my goal I set at my first Jr. National. I won Senior Showmanship, becoming the first person to win all four showmanship divisions. I won Peewee Showmanship in 2000, Junior Showmanship in 2001, Intermediate Showmanship in 2008, and Senior Showmanship in 2011. Tears of joy fell from my eyes when I accomplished this goal. I am a goal setter; I strive to always better myself, and to better myself I push myself to limits some say are unattainable. I have never set a goal I have not attained, but I have not done it alone. My family, friends and mentors are everything to me. My parents have told me since I was a little girl, “You are never the best, and there will always be someone better than you.” They have taught me to stay humble, and to learn from everyone around me. Brooke and Bryce are not only my siblings, they are my best friends, and they are always pushing me further. If it wasn’t for my family I would not be who I am

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012 THE SHOWTIMES 69

and I would not have all that I have. My mentors also play a huge role. Many of my mentors have become great family friends. Mark Kelley, his sister, Robyn Samsel and his mom, Ethel, are three people that top my list. Mark Kelley is one of the best when it comes to getting one ready, and his sister Robyn is one of the best when it comes to getting one shown. They are my biggest fans, and worst critics, but I love them and they are some of my best friends. I also have the entire Cornelius family at Coyote Ridge Ranch to thank. They are a close family friend, I spend a lot of summers with them getting cattle ready, and learning how to run a great cow-calf operation. They are known for there cow power and performance, and they are always willing to help me and push me further. I would also like to thank Shane Geist and Jeremy Reno. They are at every show with our family helping with the show cattle. Shane and Jeremy put their best into all of the cattle and without them my family would not be able to accomplish all that we have. All of these people in my life have taught me that I will never leave the Hereford industry, even though my junior career is coming to an end. I will still continue to attend the open shows as I do now, and I will continue working on building our donor program, and cow herd so that my family can continue to be competitive in the show ring, and in the pasture.

accomplished anything alone, I have an amazing family, friends and mentors to help me every step of the way. Stay humble, ask questions, dream big, and strive to be the best, and you will go far. ▪ My advice to every junior would be to walk through the barns at the next show, and watch. Learn something, and then remember to say thank you. There is no “I” in the word team, and it takes a team to succeed. I have not

Show Mom

Dianna Elder

Behind Every Showman is a Show Mom

L

BY DIANNA ELDER, IOWA

istening, assisting, checking off the to do list, washing calves and clothes, while caring not only for my family yet our extended show cattle family are just a few of the responsibilities and rewards of my show mom career. When asked to write an article on being a “show mom” so many things started swirling around in my head that I

didn’t know quite where to start. Let’s start with an introduction of my family. With my husband Bart, our lives are scheduled by the activities of Kiley (14 yrs. old), Brady (13 yrs. old) and Parker (9 yrs. old) here in Central Iowa, about 45 minutes east of the Iowa State Fairgrounds. All of our children have been around cattle since birth. Whether

they had a show cattle themed baby room, stacked cattle publications as a toddler or even a baby portrait in a feed pan, it’s only natural for this sport to be a part of their DNA. Yes, I do believe that showing cattle is as much a sport as playing basketball, football or volleyball. The amount of work and dedication it takes to get an animal ready to show is remarkable. The beginning of our sports season begins with the search for “the next great one.” We all sit around on the computers to search photo after photo and watch videos to see which calf may be the one we want. Then drive to a sale that is 10 and a-half-hours away (in one day) with three kids and a puppy in the back of the truck to see if we can capture the calf. This would be the calf that we will spend endless hours with this next year. As a show mom I tend to stay very quiet during this part of the show journey. I have found that just listening to my family give reasons on each calf they are interested in, is much safer than giving my opinion. I have also learned when we’re at an auction, that the further away I can keep the kids away from dad during bidding; the happier everyone will be on the ride home. Once we have purchased this season’s team, next comes breaking the calf to lead and set up which depending on the new calf, can be quite challenging and many times humorous. To be quite honest I try to

74 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

stay as far away from the barn as I can during this process. Bart is definitely in charge of this and we stand back and let him take care of it. We all help with washing, rinsing, and blowing out the cattle the balance of the year. Living in Iowa forces a family to dawn a variety of apparel. I really wish we had a video camera out in the barn so we could capture some of the moments and fashion statements created over the year. You see washing calves in December means wearing five layers of clothes and fighting the hose from freezing. In our case we usually melt at least one or two hoses a year trying to thaw them out between calves. While summer brings the complete opposite when we’ll roll out to the barn in our pajamas and chore boots to get calves in the cooler before the summer sun heats up the day. Everyone gets to help with the work at our house even if you do not choose to show. All the kids help with rinsing and blowing even if sometimes Parker may blow hair the wrong direction or try to see how many circles he can make in the side of the calf. We have found it takes the dedication of the entire family to make things work.

everything when in fact the registration papers didn’t make it into the truck. We discovered this three and half hours from home. Fortunately it all worked out. Like any sport, you can’t communicate enough to your team! One of the best parts of being a show mom is watching your child in the show ring. To see the culmination of their work, dedication and trust, finally all come together is amazing. It is also one of the hardest parts of being a show mom. If you know me at all the feeling of having no control of a situation is one that I am not very good with. I have had to step back and allow Kiley to do what she has learned. With winning also comes defeat and that’s o.k. It’s especially o.k. if one of our friends is ahead of us or next to us. The sportsmanship, respect and comradery learned by the youth in showing cattle are life long lessons. Finally, one of the things I enjoy most about being a show mom

is that the show cattle industry is one big family. We have made such great friendships and created an extended family that we value and care about. I feel like I am not only a show mom to our three kids but to many other kids and young adults from all over the country. If you have ever been past our stalls at any of the shows you know you can always find a full cooler and a tote full of food. Spending time with friends and family is what the shows are all about. ▪ The Showtimes would like to thank Dianna for sharing her story! If you would like to be our next Show Mom and be featured in an upcoming issue of The Showtimes, please contact Lisa Reid at 303.917.0828 or by email at theshowtimes@yahoo.com.

While our son Brady likes going to the shows, his passion is basketball. In fact he loves it so much that to endure a week at county fair a hoop was set-up so he could tune his craft, get some pick-up games and school some adults at the same time. BUILDING THE SHOWTIMES

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012 THE SHOWTIMES 89

Lisa Reid unloading our Fall Edition at the American Royal in the middle of the night!

We put out magazines in the stands early at 4:30am the morning of the Market Steer Show in Kansas City!

theVISION The Showtimes Jr. Livestock Magazine was established in February 2007. Brian had originally thought of starting a local livestock publication in Colorado and Wyoming in 2003 during high school. It wasn't until January 2007 during the National Western Stock Show that Lisa brought the idea up again. By February 2007 The Showtimes was officially started. Brian (20), Laurie (16), and Lisa (15) started our first business while we were all still showing! What started out as a 32 page local publication quickly grew to a 100 plus page magazine that is now nationwide! Every year we made improvements ranging from printing each issue perfect bound to upgrading from 4 to 6 issues per year. By 2011 we were printing in full color with a circulation of just over 8,000! To celebrate our 5th year in business we are proud to announce The Showtimes Magazine's Blackout Jackpot on March 17, 2012 and our new free iPhone App! It has always been our goal to be the best livestock magazine in the industry. When we started 5 years ago, there were no full color livestock magazines, no iPhone Apps, no metallic covers that opened from the middle and no such thing as a magazine putting out thousands of free copies during one show. The Showtimes changed what is expected from livestock magazines. We brought new and exciting ideas to the junior livestock industry. It has always been our goal to top our previous issue. We hope all of you have enjoyed watching our publication grow the past five years. Over the next several pages we share the history of The Showtimes Jr. Livestock Magazine!

5 YEARS IN BUSINESS

Marketing has always been an important part of The Showtimes. Caps, bags, hog boards, antenna balls, posters, pens, towels, and video have all been used to promote the magazine! We’ve had a Showtimes booth at the National Western, Junior Nationals, Ak-Sar-Ben and the American Royal the past few years. No matter what show you go to, the first thing you think of when you see black and white with a showman, is The Showtimes Magazine.

While The Showtimes is known for being a magazine, in 2009 and 2010 we printed 2 newsletters per year before changing to a bi-monthly publication. They ranged in size from 12-32 pages and were half-size. 92 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

The logo was the first thing we designed. We knew we wanted a bold font that would stand out. The image in the shield and in the “O” of Showtimes was a cutout of Brian’s steer Buckeye at the 2004 Rocky Mountain Jr. Beef Expo. Brian had used that logo for graphic design before incorporating it into The Showtimes. 1. The full logo is our primary logo that is used at the top of every cover. 2. The “O” by itself was used early on. 3. The “S” has been used in a few of our videos. 4. The “ST” has never been used but was designed early on as an alternate logo.

Brian Reid, Adam Pryor and Jim Reid at the 2004 Rocky Mountain Jr. Beef Expo in Greeley, Colorado. Brian's steer "Buckeye" went on to win the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo later that summer.

5. The Shield was created in January of 2009. It is used as our secondary logo. It can be found on everything we design. 6. The showman logo is used from time to time.

The History of Sullivan Supply

March 2003 We talk about starting a local livestock publication that would cover Colorado and Wyoming.

From his mother’s garage to a household name. JOHN SULLIVAN INTERVIEWED BY LISA REID

A

John’s uncle Fritz and his extended family make the rope halters.

ll champions come from different states, barns, exhibitors, species, breeds, and producers. So what is the one thing that they all have in common? Sullivan Supply. From the time I was eight years old and started to show cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats competitively, the word Sullivan was part of my vocabulary just as Coke, Jell-O, and Band-Aid. Our state Sullivan distributors would show up to every jackpot, county, and state show with their trailer in tow, packed full of all the various livestock products and equipment I needed. To me, Loren and Maureen Broad were Sullivans. It was not until my family began to show at the national level that I realized the

enormity of Sullivan Supply. In the mid 80’s, no one would have predicted that the then manager of Little Mondeaux Limousin’s show cattle in Genoa, Nevada would one day create an empire that changed the livestock show industry forever. During that time, John Sullivan was talked into purchasing a farm by his brother Joe for a good price. What cost him the selling price of his car for a down payment, was nothing more than a rough farm that good farmers did not want. John continued to make payments on his farm while working at Mondeaux. In 1989, wanting to be closer to home, John moved back to Dunlap, Iowa with two things in mind. He aspired to build a purebred show

Interview

ST: Do you have any background with the livestock industry?

in. The honesty of it. We try to do a little something for everybody. ST: When you are not performing, what is your favorite thing to do?

CD: Growing up my first job was working in my dad’s sale barn where I was in charge of pushing baby calves through the chute. Later in high school I got into team roping and still team rope today. I enjoy horses and cattle. I still own some cattle. I just bought some first calf Black Angus here recently.

CD: Other than hanging out with the wife and kiddo (He will be 2 in September) which is probably my favorite thing to do, I like to be outdoors. I like to play golf a lot. We play golf a lot when we are traveling. I love to hunt and just be outdoors. I am not an indoor guy. I grew up on a horse ranch where we didn’t have cable. I think we had rabbit ears with only thirteen channels even through high school. So I spent every day outdoors.

ST: When you had your show here at the Grizzly Rose in January during the National Western Stock Show we know of individuals from across the country that attended. Why do you feel that your music has become so popular with college students and livestock individuals nation wide?

casey donahew band

interview

On Friday, August 13th, the Casey Donahew Band played hits including “Crazy”, “White Trash Story”, and their new single “Moving On” at the Grizzly Rose in Denver, Colorado. Before the show, Lisa and Brian Reid of The Showtimes Magazine got the opportunity to talk with the band’s lead singer, Casey Donahew. Left: Lisa and Brian with Casey just moments before the band took the stage. 22

ST: What is something about you that nobody knows or asks about?

CD: It’s crazy. We’ve done a lot of traveling here lately further and further outside of Texas and Oklahoma and the response is overwhelming. A lot of these places don’t play us on the radio, but the XM stations are starting to play more of our stuff and it is starting to help. Hopefully it is the real factor of us just being normal people, telling stories about our lives. I think it is just believable. I think that is what draws people

CD: I think something that would shock people is that I am a really standoffish kind of person. It doesn’t come across on stage, but in small groups and any social environment I am the guy that blends back into the crowd. Some people might think it is kind of weird because I am in the entertainment business. I am really opposite of how I am on stage. Offstage I am really layed back and quiet and don’t talk a lot. I am just not a re-

ally chatty kind of person. That’s just something that is different coming from a stage show. ST: What is your favorite line you have ever written in a song? CD: There are a couple of them. On the new record [Moving On] there is a line in “California” that says “If you are lonely, then why’d you leave.” That is a really cool line and a really cool concept; because a lot of people leave relationships when they are lonely. I have another one off of the new record because it is fresh on my mind. I like the line “It’s not about winning, I just can’t stand losing anymore.” And I like, “I didn’t know a twelve gauge could kick like that.” ST: What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment? CD: In life, he’s about three feet tall and climbing into bed right now and watching Toy Story. Other than that, musically selling out Billy Bobs is my biggest accomplishment. Its so historic and it means a lot because we grew up there going to shows like Pat Green. I’ve seen Willy Nelson, Randy Rogers and all of these bands sell out that bar. So for us to get up there and play that show and finally sell that bar out so far

SCHNOORS

F

or Schnoor Sisters, involvement in agriculture spans much further than showing cattle. It wasn’t even cattle where they got started regarding the livestock junior programs. Showing sheep and barrel racing was their beginning, but when Amanda set her eyes on a calf during her first county fair, cattle soon began to be a significant part of their life. In Chowchilla, the early mornings and late evenings are dedicated to much more than cattle projects. The Schnoor Family owns and operates Riverview Ranches in which they produce almonds, hay, tomatoes and corn. Located in the San Joaquin Valley of central California, agriculture is a way of life as the state is the top agriculture producer in the United States. Brad is the third generation agriculturist managing the daily business of Riverview with his father, Jack, still actively working on the ranch. Their mother, Mindy, grew up in a third generation farming family with rodeo being a hobby. Although the girls do not actively participate in rodeo events, it is a passion they all share. With Brad being raised on Riverview Ranches, he exhibited sheep as a junior while learning the ropes of producing such diverse crops. Exhibiting livestock is simply a hobby for Amanda, Kirbe and Sydney, and one in which they truly enjoy. Kirbe and Sydney soon followed in Amanda’s steps exhibiting not only on the local and state level but nationally. They are known in several arenas, and whether they are in the Angus, Charlois, Maine-Anjou, market steers or prospect steers and heifer rings they prove successful. However, they know all too well that before you win you have to take a fall or two. Mindy is the positive reinforcement, always reminding the girls that winning is great, but there is more to showing than getting the purple banner. Now that Amanda has exited the junior programs, and Kirbe doing so shortly, it’s all about Sydney, now 12. 14

I

started raising livestock at a very young age when my grandpa pulled into our driveway with a hereford. I joined 4-H in Adams County and showed cattle, hogs, lambs, goats, dairy, and chickens. I also joined our county livestock judging team. My first good steer came from Mark Dorsey and Rod Kerchal in the fall of 1999. In 2001 I traveled to Leedey, Oklahoma to attend Kirk Stierwalt’s Show Cattle School with a friend and my dad. The skills I learned that week made me become more competitive. In 2002 I exhibited the Reserve Champion Lamb at the NILE. I was also a member of the 2003 State 4-H Champion Livestock Judging Team and traveled to Louisville for the NAILE. In high school, I was very involved with FFA. I have many good memories of growing up in Adams County and showing at the fair every year! Friends made, places traveled, and animals shown have always been a valued part of my life. That was the opening line of my Junior Spotlight article in the February 2004 Purple Circle. It is still true today. At that point in my life I was a senior at Brighton High School.

Little did I know that 2004 would become one of the biggest years of my life, and from those successes, I would be the owner of my own magazine. In the fall of 2003 I was asked to pick a topic for my senior DECA project. I wanted to do my project on starting a livestock magazine. My teacher didn’t feel that it would be unique enough to win, so I ended up doing my project on E-Bull; an online cattle auction. After months of preparation I took my project to Colorado Springs for the State DECA Conference. E-Bull won 1st Place and went on to win 2nd Overall at the 2004 DECA ICDC in Nashville, Tennessee! Later that year, my steer Buckeye won the 2004 Colorado State Fair! While my online cattle auction didn’t become my career choice after high school, the marketing skills I aquired from DECA have greatly influenced every part of The Showtimes. Winning the Colorado State Fair allowed me to make new contacts and friendships that might not have ever been possible. In college, I originally planned to livestock judge and go to CSU. I changed my mind and went to

Morgan Community College in Bennett, Colorado. I obtained my Associates Degree from MCC and transfered to Adams State College. In 2006 I did an internship for Bob Beauprez who ran for Governor. I later received my Business Administration Degree from Adams State in 2010. Many people think that I went to school and got an ag degree or studied graphic design. With the exception of a few seminars, I actually have taught myself everything about designing a magazine! The Showtimes Magazine has been my favorite accomplishment. It has allowed me to display my designes and vision of the livestock show industry. When we started The Showtimes in February 2007, I would have never dreamed we would have influenced our industry so greatly. I have met so many great people across the country! I am proud of what we have accomplished so far with The Showtimes Magazine, and look forward to sharing what

we have planned for the future. I thank God for everything in my life. I would also like to thank my parents, Jim and Betty for all of the support you have given me showing and with our magazine. I thank my sisters, Laurie and Lisa for all of your help. I enjoy showing livestock and working with you! I have many good memories of showing with Mat Vaughn, Cooper Anderson, the Gabel Family, the Bauman family, the Whitman family and most recently the Humprey family! Finally, I would like to thank Mark Dorsey, Rod Kerchal, Mike Frink, Kirk Stierwalt, Kirk Roecker, Adam Pryor, Mark Overman, Bob May, Don MacLennan, Vickie Meyer, Darin Straka, Ben Cooley, Tom McBride, Joe Sullivan, David Eisenach and everyone who has supported The Showtimes! s I look back over the past twelve years of showing to my very first steer "Oreo" it is hard to believe that I have come so far in such a short period of time. Being 8 years old, I could hardly wait to enter into the show ring for the first time, and looking back I cannot even count the amount of times that I have entered one. Although showing is a competition it's not the different awards that I think of while reminiscing, rather than the friends that I have made, places I have been able to travel to, and the favorite animals that I have raised that I remember.

100 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

The Livestock Industry has been a great world to grow up in and has taught me a lot of life long lessons. When I was in high school it was hard to explain to teachers why I was gone all of the time. During my senior year, I managed to miss about 30 days of class while still graduating Valedictorian in a class of 500. My biggest accomplishment in high school, however, was serving as the Publicity Director on the Colorado DECA's State Executive Board. This enabled me to travel to the International

Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida in 2007 where I met with marketing students from around the world. The Livestock Industry has given me numerous opportunities in addition to just showing. I was elected to the AJMAA Board and worked with numerous judges as well as become good friends with individuals deeply involved in the industry such as Eric Walker, Kent Habeger, and Jeana Hurlbut (Sankey). The greatest honor I have received was when I was elected as the President of the Junior Board of Directors in the summer of 2009. Most people would call me crazy, but I absolutely love working the show ring. Although my degree is not in Animal Science, the Livestock Industry was the deciding factor in my path for college. Having started The Showtimes as I finished up my last two years of high school, I knew that it would require a lot of dedication, hard work, and traveling. In order to give 110 percent to both school and our business, it was not plausible for me to do traditional college. A year out of high school, I graduated Suma Cum Laude with my Associates of

FAVORITE ANIMAL Reserve Champion Steer 2009 Colorado State Fair “Cotton Mouth This was special because it was my last year showing at the Colorado State Fair as well as being the best steer I had shown to that point.

Art degree from Morgan Community College. This spring, I will be graduating Suma Cum Laude with my degree in Business Administration through Adams State College's Distance Learning program. I also plan to pursue a Culinary Arts degree from Johnson and Wales as cooking has always been a passion of mine. In life, it is always a blessing when you get the opportunity to tie in your God given gift with something that you love. The magazine has enabled me to utilize my marketing skills in the livestock world. My favorite aspect of publishing The Showtimes is going to the shows with the magazine. From setting up and working our booth, talking with people face-to-face, and putting out magazines and taking pictures, I absolutely love my job! It is hard to believe that five years have already passed since our first issue was printed. It is amazing to see how much it has grown and how it has come to be recognized as one of the leading

livestock magazines. Over the years, I have had the privilege to show with Mark Dorsey, Kirk Stierwalt, Kirk Roecker and Adam Pryor, Bobby May, Steve Bonham, John Sullivan, Darin Straka, and Warren and Darla Cude. Without them, I would not only have succeeded in the show ring, but also have grown myself as an individual. Each and every one of them has taught me something new. From "borrowing" a pitch fork to the minor details that add up to ultimately win shows, I owe so much to these indivudals and many more that I have not mentioned. Most of all, I would like to thank my family for all of their help, knowledge, and "constructive criticism." :) Now as I slowly start to age out of the show ring, I am greatful to have found a way that I am still able to stay connected to the industry I love.

oel Osteen once said to never overlook one individual or event that comes across your path, because they might hold the key to your future. 102 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

I have been extremely blessed in the show ring at the county, state, regional, and national level. When I reflect on my show career, however, my fondest memory is of when I won the 2010 Colorado State Fair Market Steer Show. Right after the show, while I was still in the ring, Audrey Gabel, a good friend and one of our strongest competitors over the years, came up to me with tears in her eyes and gave me a giant hug. This meant so much to me. It showed me that we all work endless hours, days, and months striving to win; as the excitement and sometimes disappointment settle, however, it is the friendships made, the memories created, and the time spent with family that truly matter and will last

LISA REID

a lifetime. Livestock judging was something I was involved in since before I was even old enough to compete as a junior. Over the years I have been coached by Don MacLennan, Ben Cooley, Amber Thomas, Krisha Custis, my brother, and Logan MacLennan. Not only did these individuals strengthen my judging skills, they also made a lasting imprint on me as a person; and to this day, I still consider them close friends. I am currently serving as the Region III Director of the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association’s Junior Board. This opportunity has allowed me to work side-byside with some of the leading individuals in the livestock industry. One thing I have learned over the years is that it is not my project, but my family’s project. We win together, lose together, learn together, and grow together. I would like to thank my mom, Betty, dad, Jim, brother, Brian, and sister, Laurie, for always being there for me and for passing on all of their experience and knowledge that has helped me to be successful.

FAVORITE ANIMAL “Crown” - Steer I showed at the 2011 American Royal To me, Crown is the best steer I have shown. When he was a prospect, he blew up and hurt me before a jackpot. I worked with him every day for seven months, praying it would help him act good in Kansas City - and it did . I loved that steer more then I thought was possible and he trusted me.

[owner, field editor]

So many individuals have been driving influences on not only my show career and successes but on me as an individual - Warren and Darla Cude, Ann Schaffer, Bob May, Darin Straka, Travis Otterstad, the entire Bonham crew, John Sullivan and Sullivan Farms. I have not mentioned everyone that has greatly impacted my life, but have just scratched the surface. We started The Showtimes five years ago when I was a freshman in high school. In that time frame, a week prior to high school graduation I graduated Suma Cum Laude from Morgan Community College with my Associates of Art degree and I am currently a senior at Adams State College where I will graduate Suma Cum Laude this spring with my bachelors in Business Administration. The Showtimes Magazine has been a real God send for my family. As I have always enjoyed writing, I am responsible for the

articles and special feature aspect of the magazine. I always love when I complete or receive a new article as it gives me an inside look at the lives of individuals I know and show against. I am very thankful for the response we have gotten from our publication and I am excited for everyone to see what we have in store for the coming years! It is always important to keep God first in everything we do. I have made a habit of reciting my favorite Bible verse every time I walk into the show ring or whenever the nerves and stresses that are tied to life and business start to get to me. "For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things." Romans 11:36. Although the goal of every show is to get that slap on the butt and exit the ring with a purple banner, I pray that no matter where I end up in the lineup that while at the show or through The Showtimes, I have made a positive impact on someone else or grown myself in some way.

5 YEARS IN BUSINESS

theCHANGES The Showtimes has changed our look a few times over the past 5 years. We've grown from a 32 page magazine to a 200 page magazine. We've also changed our layout and design as well. Back in early 2009 we used a grunged up layout. In recent years we have upgraded to a very clean, bold layout with modern lines. One of our favorite changes was the new spine (side of the magazine) that we introduced in 2011. The new spine offers a bold rectangle that changes colors with each issue as well as our shield!

My name is MacKenzie Fruchey and I am 18 years old and a Senior at Fayette High School in northwestern Ohio. I am planning to attend Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute, with a major in Livestock Production and Management. It was my personal goal to win the State Fair or a National show, but winning Champion at the American Royal and Champion and Third overall at the Ohio State Fair all in the same year has been unbelievable. This has been such a special year, one that I will remember forever. I have been showing livestock for 9 years and it has given me so many memorable moments with my friends

and my family, and they are memories that we will all talk about and will share together for a lifetime. I couldn’t have reached these goals without the help and support of my family, my Mom, Step-Dad, and Grandparents, and I also owe a huge “thank-you” to Randy Hill, Kristy Pingel, and Samantha and Alexandra Raute in Indiana for all of their help and support. Showing livestock takes hard work and dedication, and everyone on the show team has their place, their responsibilities, but the feeling of accomplishment in watching your goals and dreams come true, accepting that winning handshake, is priceless.

Currently I'm a junior at Iowa State University majoring in animal science where I am involved with Block and Bridle and swine interest groups. I have been showing pigs for most of my life through 4-H, FFA, and open shows at the county state and national levels. This was my first year with the

opportunity showing at the American Royal and it was an experience I will never forget. I'm glad I can be a part of the American Royal history. It has been a great year of showing pigs and I would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported along the way. I would especially like to thank my family - none of this would have been possible without their help.

Supreme Champion Heifer ► Nick Sullivan, Dunlap, IA

Nick Sullivan goes out with a bang and puts himself in the History Books! On the evening of November 13th, 2011 on green turf of Freedom Hall Stadium, history was made and Nick Sullivan takes his “Last Dance”. “The North American International Livestock Expo (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky is the largest purebred livestock show in the world,” stated Claude Brock, press director of the show. Claude said the Jr. Heifer Show has 14 different breeds represented and each breed selects a champion over a two day period. All breed champions parade in front of a panel of six judges. Each judge rates each breed

champion on a point system and turns their score card into the officials of the NAILE Show. In front of a packed crowd of thousands, the points are then tallied and the animal with the most points is selected the Supreme Grand Champion Female for the 2011 NAILE. This year’s winner was Nick Sullivan, 18, son of Joe and Beth Sullivan of Dunlap, IA. Nick beat over1400 Jr. Heifers from all across the US to win the prestigious honor, a challenging task that only a few have ever achieved. Nick is a nine year member of the Boyer Rooter 4-H Club and a Freshman at Iowa State University. Nick’s win awarded him a $2500 scholarship Continued on page 122

EXPOSITION

I would like to thank Aunt Jill, Travis, Tiffani, the guys at the barn who help me everyday, and my mom and dad. Thanks also to the Guyer family for their help in Louisville. We were stalled together, and I told Dave the day before we showed, "Wouldn't it be neat if Ashtin and I could be grand and reserve…just either way." I had no idea that's exactly what was going to happen! Congratulations, Ashtin!

I am Baylor Bonham from Newcastle, Oklahoma. I am 11 years old and in the fifth grade. My parents are Steve and Stacey, and I have a brother, Logan. I love showing! I've been showing since I was four years old, determined to be ready for the "big" shows when I was old enough. Showing in Louisville this year was a dream come true. I really think I stopped breathing for a few seconds when I realized I had won. That was the greatest moment ever!

This is the first time in the history of the show that the same exhibitor won this distinguished award two years in a row.

Nick has been on a roll and has had an incred-

ible year. He first won Champion and Reserve Supreme Heifer at the 2011 Iowa State Fair, then Reserve Supreme Heifer at the 2011 AK-SARBEN Livestock Show plus exhibited the Supreme Heifer at the 2011 American Royals prior to his NAILE win. Dreams turned into reality. Congratulations to Nick and his family. “Had a awesome weekend in Louisville Kentucky, couldn't think of a better way to go out and end it, Thank you all for the help and support I am truly lucky to have family and friends like you.”… Nick

I am Brenden Kuesel and I'm from Victor, Iowa. I am 20 years old and I graduated high school from H-L-V Community School. I currently attend the University of Iowa and study Accounting and Finance. I enjoy hanging out with my friends, intramural sports, showing sheep, and going to Hawkeye football games. I have been fortunate over my career to have a lot of success in the show ring. I received the

Grand Champion Market Lamb at the Iowa State Fair in 2007, and Reserve Grand Champion in 2004,2008, and 2011. I was also selected Grand Champion Market Lamb at Ak-Sar-Ben in 2008. But winning Louisville is probably the biggest accomplishment of my career. It came as such a shock that I didn't know what to think or how to feel. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.

Jake Bloomberg, 18 year old from Berwick, IL, won the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville, KY. Bloomberg was also a member of the Illinois team that has won the title for a 3rd year in a row. Jake is a fresman at Blackhawk East and hopes to be a member on their collegiat team. Jake and the Illinois team were coached by Chris Cassady and Bane Willson. An interesting fact is Jake's older brother Blake Bloomberg won the contest in 2003. They are the only two siblings to ever do this. Jake also has a sister Jamie, who is on the juding team at Oklahoma State University.

Meet the Exhibitor

O

ur family lives on a farm in Stark County near Toulon, Illinois. Our county is one of the smallest in Illinois and currently has no stoplights. Our father, Rick, is a corn and soybean farmer and he and our family run a herd of Maine-Anjou influenced cows, focusing on producing high quality breeding stock. We would like to say he has hobbies, but the farming, insurance and cattle take all his time and of course the occasional show and hunting for the next years projects in the fall. We appreciate and don’t thank him enough for all help and support he provides us with. Our mother, Nancy, currently works part time as an Assistant office Manager in Peoria, Illinois. She has worked there many years and enjoys her job. She also enjoys gardening, baking, and taking photos of us at shows; we like to refer to her as the paparazzi. All jokes aside though we wouldn’t be doing what we are without her, whether its settling a disagreement between us, helping blow a calf out when help is scarce, filling out entries, or her awesome food she brings along to shows, she’s always there supporting us. Jon (19) is a sophomore at Black Hawk College in Kewanee, Illinois. He is in the Ag-Transfer program and is currently on the Black Hawk Judging Team. He was on the 2008 Henry-Stark 4-H Livestock Judging Team and represented Illinois 4-H at the American Royal Judging Contest and on the Illinois State 4-H Team 2009 winning the contest at the NAILE in Louisville. He enjoys evaluating livestock and someday would like to judge cattle shows. He currently placed Second High Individual Overall in Kansas City at the American Royal in October 2011. Jon enjoys fitting and showing cattle as well as planning the spring breeding and calving. With his busy schedule at BHE he always manages to make time to help his sister, fit cattle and show his heifers at the jackpot and National Shows. He showed the Champion AOB at the 2009 NAILE but most recently, had Grand Champion She’s A Lady Futurity and Grand Champion High- Maine Female at the 2011 Maine-Anjou Junior Nationals.

JON&ELIZABETH HEATON A family that has found success through hard work and dedication. TOULON, ILLINOIS

146 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

Elizabeth (17) currently is a senior at Stark County High School in Toulon, Illinois and also attends BHE taking Dual Credit Classes. She is currently involved in FFA, 4-H, Student Council, Football Cheerleading and the Henry-Stark Livestock

Judging Team. She enjoys spending time with friends, shopping, livestock judging and working and showing her heifers. Elizabeth’s greatest accomplishments have been Champion Bred & Owned Female at the 2010 Maine-Anjou Jr. Nationals, 3rd overall in the 2011 State Livestock Judging Contest and 5th Overall Heifer at the 2011 IL State Fair. Some of her goals she would like to accomplish are to be on the 2012 IL State 4-H Livestock Judging Team and become a Maine-Anjou Jr. Board member. She is ready to start a new chapter in her life and begin college. She plans on majoring in Ag Business and minoring in Communications when attending college next fall. Her ideas for future career choices include a sales representative for a feed company, developing new show feeds and supplements or being a marketing consultant. In the future she would like to judge cattle shows and of course raise show cattle. She is very excited and looking forward to showing her heifers in this upcoming year. Although we both started showing at age 8 we began showing competitively in 2008. In this first year we went to our first State Fair, Jr. National and NAILE. Before 2008 we showed livestock that was almost always at the bottom of the class in county fair shows. My brother and I weren’t dedicated to showing and we didn’t get very much satisfaction and enjoyment out of it. But we all start somewhere and

work our way up. The beginning of our competitive show career began with Jon having the inspiration to own show pigs. Dad really objected to this idea because we didn’t have the facilities for a show pig operation. Instead he struck a deal with us that he would buy us each a heifer. Little did our father know this was the gateway to a new way of life for our family. Ever since we purchased those two heifers we have been hooked. Showing cattle has become a huge part of our family’s life. Like so many, we have spent countless hours together in the barn caring for the heifers, washing, rinsing and feeding. We are out in that barn at the crack of dawn and until the sun sinks below the horizon. Some days get very long and tiring but we get through them together. What we have accomplished has been a family/team effort. There is a lot of self-satisfaction in our accomplishments. Upon realizing hard work and dedication pays off in the end it has given us the drive to work even harder. Each year we try to take our daily care program up a notch and it seems like we are doing all we can, but with each round of heifers we find some new improvement to make to our program. All those 4 am mornings in the summer, we wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world. My brother and I have made so many unforgettable memories out in our barn that will never be replaced. All the self-discipline in caring for our heifers has taught

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012 THE SHOWTIMES 147

many of us life lessons and made life long memories. We have been given so many great opportunities we would have not have had if we hadn’t become involved in the livestock industry. We have made many friends and have the chance to network with people all across the U.S. Showing has taught us how to take success with failure and that each show is just one judge’s opinion. We are thankful to have so many experiences. Also, thank you to Jason Minnaert, Chad Holtkamp, and Jeff Paulsen along with many others for all their encouragement and advice and the support from our parents financially. We have met many extraordinary people and made some of the best memories. Our program has come a long way in just four short years. Our family is so very grateful for the opportunity that God has given us to make it possible. The biggest life lesson our family has learned from showing cattle is “Never forget where you started and never take for granted how far you have come.” ▪

The Showtimes would like to thank Jon and Elizabeth Heaton for sharing their story and wish them luck with all of their future endeavors!

With the New Show Season under way there is a time old question that arises at every show, “ How Do I Get My Calf Fuller”. There are a lot of “fill products” out there but the one we recommend is ShowRite Stretch. Stretch is a new fill product that just became available this fall. It is a pelleted product that when fed at the rate of one part stretch to one part water you will see three times the expansion. Now I know you are thinking will they eat it? The answer is yes, especially if you go through the right process. If you bring your calf into the barn the morning of the show and decide he or she needs fill and throw any kind of filler in front of them and expect them to eat it and fill up, that is most likely not going to happen and the same goes with Stretch. As I stated

earlier, with the right process we can add fill but we have to plan ahead. If you will start your calf 2-4 days ahead of the show it will allow the product to give you the best results. Example: Calf is being fed three scoops of feed/ feeding. Take out two scoops of feed and replace it with one scoop of Stretch. The reason for this is to keep your calf a little on the hungry side but due to the extra expansion you will keep that fuller look. The only way a product will work is if they eat it. Cattle that have already been fed show morning and have laid down because they are full will not eat any fill product because there has not been any preparation. So don’t run to the show supply trailer on show morning and expect to get something to fill your calf up. With just a little planning Stretch will become a huge tool to your success in the ring.

Recipe "The main thing I think would be nice to relay to the world is how everyone has traditions to carry on and how important they all are. Second, being showing and family recipes both will continue forever!!! I have been making these rolls for shows, funerals, holidays, and celebrations for 25 years. Starting when my nieces started to show, I would bring them to the fair to have on that busy day!! It has been a tradition for now 8 years having at the shows for Patrick and all of our show friends to enjoy on show day. It is a great bonding tool and also has opened new friendships through the years. Grandma lived a long life on her farm until 91. A wonderful person who always had a listening ear and a smile for you. And very much a lady." Barb Foley - Pearl City, Illinois

GRANDMA FOLEY'S CINNAMON ROLLS {bernice foley} Ingredients 2 sticks margarine, butter (or 1 cup of spry) 2 cups milk 1 cup sugar (or a little less) 1 1/2 tsp. salt 2 yeast cakes 1/2 cup luke warm water 2 beaten eggs 7-8 cups of only Gold Medal Flour Scald Milk. Pour over shortening, sugar, and salt. Meantime, soften yeast in luke warm water. Add to cooled luke warm first mixture. Beat

168 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

eggs and add. Add 2 cups of flour, mix with strong spoon. Beat and add small amount of flour at a time. When dough is rather stiff, be careful not to add too much flour. Let rise in a warm place with light towel on top. When about double the size, take out of bowl and knead twice. Then put back in bowl to rise again. Then shape and let rise. The trick to her recipe was how to shape... Take out half the dough at a time and put on your floured counter and roll out to a 1/2 inch thickness. Then, brush the dough with butter and sprinkle heavily with cinnamon sugar mixture. Then roll it up. Now the fun part! To cut the rolls, take kite string about 12 inches long and put under dough, bring up and cross tightly and it will cut your dough for you. I make them about an inch

thick (give or take). Put on lightly greased cookie sheet. Then you let them rise only once and pop them in the oven. Set timer for 15 minutes to check the rolls. Then add time accordingly. Total time is about 30 minutes depending on the size of your rolls. While they are in the oven, make this easy icing. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar 2 tbsp. soft margarine or butter 1 tsp. vanilla (optional) 1-2 tbsp hot water Mix ingredients until creamy. It should be a medium thick glaze. I let the rolls cool for only seconds, then put the icing on, while warm.

Tough Times

T

“….But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God” 1 Samuel 30:6 BY BRAD HENDERSON, COLORADO

hese are tough times. My heart breaks for so many of our friends and neighbors that are going through horrific times in their lives. Marriages and families are falling apart, folks have lost their jobs and are looking at losing their homes, addictions, mistakes that lead to consequences whether it’s your fault or not….you feel like you’re at the bottom of a hole with no way to get out. I’ve been in that hole, feeling like no one understood and no one had ever had it so bad, and I was totally out of solutions to the problems. Every one of my solutions only seemed to dig the hole deeper. In 1 Samuel chapter 30 David found himself at the bottom of that same dark hole. By God’s Infinite Wisdom and Grace David had been forced to pull out of accompanying an army that was about to go attack Israel. When he got back home he finds the City where they had been staying had been attacked and the invaders had carried away his family and the families of his friends

and soldiers. Verse six says, “And David was greatly distressed, for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: BUT (here is where David, just like you and me, had a choice- he could have thrown a pity party for himself, he could have struck out on his own knowledge and strength and probably ended up only in a deeper hole or dead, or he could have sought real help and guidance- David made the right choice….) David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.” David paused, called out to God for His direction and leadership, David listened for God’s answer, and then he followed God and saved all the captives and learned a very important life lesson that allowed him to go on and become the king of Israel. David had a decision to make and no, he didn’t have a lot of time to do it. Folks had rocks in their hands and were ready to kill him. Everyone he knew blamed him for what had happened and David was about to pay for it. It’s part of being a leader, weather you asked for that leadership position or not. Many times, the folks that are supposed

170 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

to have your back will be the first to throw the knives or rocks at you when things don’t go perfectly. And those wounds hurt far worse than the hill you were trying to take or the goal you were trying to accomplish as a group. David was hurting, and he had every right to fire right back at them and make himself out to be the victim and blame everyone else for his problems. But that would have gotten him and his followers nowhere and done nothing to save their families. David could have grabbed his sword and shield and charged off into battle and only made everything worse. David made the right decision, he sought the Wisdom of his Creator before he made another move. This is a lesson I am slowly learning, (according to my wife I am still very much “Ready, Fire, then Aim”), but I’ve lived it, if you will put it into practice and seek God moment by moment and seek His control of your life, and do the hardest part- listen and do exactly what He wants you to do, no matter how hard or selfless it may be… He will turn things around and lift you out of that pit (if you do it early enough you will avoid the hole all together) and He will set your feet on firm solid

high ground. You will still have to deal with all the consequences for your decisions and actions that dug that hole, but the weight will be lifted and trust me………He will be there to carry you through the clean up of the mess you made. Where does your strength come from? Yourself? People? Money? Things? Trust me, all your crutches go up like a puff of smoke when the storm comes. Only the Creator

of this universe is big enough and strong enough to handle what I’ve come through and what you may be going through right now. Seek Him. Trust Him. Accept what He wants you to do and the changes He wants you to make IN YOUR LIFE. Then follow Him to the letter. No matter how dark it is around you right now, He is the only answer and He is the only One that can save you. ▪
