SMART SENSATION the

The Smart Series, Made in the USA!

Brush™

by Sullivan’s

The Smart Sensation like no other. The advantage of the Smart Sensation is how it amplifies the volume of the hair as it lifts up from the hide without causing curls, kinks or matting that are often |associated with rice root or massage brushes. With the 129 precisely placed ball-tipped teeth, you can actually see the Smart Sensation brush create hair separation off the skin allowing air to flow deep into the hair base for added hair stimulation and hair growth. Healthy for hide and hair, the Smart Sensation gently massages the hide to stimulate blood flow that releases the natural oils from the skin to coat the hair and promote healthy hair growth. The Smart Sensation is similar to human vent hair brushes but has been designed with the proper size for show cattle and a more comfortable handle application. Cattle love the feel of the stimulating Smart Sensation!

From The Editor

1:52AM

The State Fairs have arrived!

I

t's 1:52 in the morning and we are putting the finishing touches on the very issue you are reading now. The 25th issue combines everything we have worked hard on for the past several years and is definitely our favorite issue to date! The most interesting comment I receive is, "So where are you working now?" The people that normally ask this question know we own The Showtimes Magazine. I don't think that most people realize what goes into publishing a National Livestock Magazine. My sisters and I put everything we have into each issue to ensure that it is a magazine that we would want to read if we were you. Even when it means working from 6:00 in the morning to well after midnight to make sure it arrives at the printer on time! Shortly after we started The Showtimes Jr. Livestock Magazine we took a plane to Omaha, Nebraska to take in the West Central Iowa Pasture Sales. Little did we know that we would make many new friends and connections with future advertisers. At the time, we were promoting our 2nd issue

(only 60 pages and was half black and white). While looking at calves we stopped at Sullivan Cattle Company in Dunlap, Iowa. One of the most memorable moments to date with the magazine was meeting Joe Sullivan for the first time and having him write us a check for the next summer's State Fair Issue Cover and commit to many more to come. We had very little experience with the livestock magazine world at the time and weren't even sure we would be around the following year. His support motivated us and has helped us grow to the 248 page, full color magazine we are today. With that being said, we are very excited about the 2012 State Fair Season! We hope you enjoy the many new features and upgrades we have done for this issue! We wish you the best of luck at the State Fairs! Sincerely, Brian J. Reid Owner/Editor

113TH AMERICAN ROYAL LIVESTOCK SHOW UPDATE

Kansas City’s 113th American Royal Livestock Show is scheduled for October 24 through November 4, 2012. Junior Market Shows will highlight the first weekend with the Junior Premium Auction climaxing those activities on Sunday, October 28. A full slate of breeding cattle shows sponsored by their respective national and/or state associations are the backbone of the American Royal and are scheduled throughout the run of the show. Several breeds have sales planned in conjunction with the American Royal as well. A new, open to the world, feeder calf show for steers and heifers has been added to the lineup. There is no sale with this show. It will feature single entries of 2012 born prospects. The Supreme Junior Heifer Show headlines the show on Sunday, November 4. This is the Stanley Stout Scholarship Program that features the competition of all the breed champions from the junior show. The Boer Goats will take over the Governors Hall with two ABGA sanctioned point shows on October 30 and 31. The Royal Premier Show is on Tuesday and the Royal Classic Show is on Wednesday. In keeping with the American Royal Mission, “to provide scholarships, education, awards and competitive learning experiences that rewards hard work, leadership skills and agrarian values”, there is special emphasis on the judging contests. In 2012 there will be a full slate of livestock, meats and crops contests for 4-H, FFA and collegiate contestants. A detailed show schedule is posted at www.americanroyal. com. The 2012 entry deadline is September 10. Complete premium book information along with the entry form and online entries will be available at www.americanroyal.com in late spring. For further information please contact the American Royal Livestock Department at karriem@ americanroyal.com or (816) 569-4054. The American Royal, a not-for-profit 501c3 organization that benefits youth and education, is now in its 113th year and celebrates our region’s rich agricultural heritage through competition, education and entertainment.

Hall of Fame JULY 2012

NEW MEMBERS

James & Nick Sullivan DUNLAP, IOWA

The July 2012 Showtime's Hall of Fame Inductees have not only exhibited and produced numerous champions of various breeds, they have also given back to the industry by serving on national junior boards, hosting sales, and lending a hand to fellow exhibitors. James and Nick Sullivan of Dunlap, Iowa have without question become a familiar face at the photo backdrop, in the ring, or in the show barn. It requires a lot of hard work, skill, and overall good luck to achieve success within the show ring; therefore, when not only an individual, but a family, finds themselves in the winner's circle on multiple occasions over multiple years, it is something we can and should all commend. Some highlight females that the Sullivan brothers have exhibited include Nick's Shorthorn Plus female, SULL Jaylynn 0904, that was a multiple time Grand Champion and Supreme Champion Female at shows including the 2011 American Royal and NAILE; as well as James' MaineTainer female, GCC All Right All Ready, who's exemplary winning streak earned James the title of the Maine-Anjou Association's Premier Exhibitor for the 2008 show year. While most Hall of Fame's honor individuals long after they are retired and years after their successes, we enjoy honoring both James and Nick Sullivan while they are still current in our industry.

The Showtimes Hall of Fame honors individuals who excel in the livestock industry. If you would like to nominate someone for our Hall of Fame, please email theshowtimes@yahoo.com. Visit our online

Hall of Fame at theshowtimesmagazine.com to learn more about all of our members.fame

“We were really impressed by the performance of Fire Extinguisher when the steer was taken out of the cooler and transported to the Wisconsin State Fair where temperatures reached the mid-90s. He maintained his appetite and didn’t heat up at all. No other hair supplement was used, and we still achieved exceptional results. We look forward to using Fire Extinguisher again this year. The steer exhibited was the Grand Champion Steer at the 2012 Wisconsin State Fair.

LEEDEY, OK

Kirk Stierwalt

1. WHO THEY ARE...WHERE THEY CAME FROM... Kirk Stierwalt clipped his first calf at the age of six. He laughed about how he messed the calf up, "I gave him a haircut that would last." Growing up he was involved in 4-H and spent a lot of time at his granddad's, where he kept his calves. Flash forward to 2012 and he has come a long way from that first calf. Having started in 1987, this year marks the 25th Anniversary for Kirk Stierwalt Show Cattle Clinics. In addition to traveling around the country clipping and fitting and putting on clinics, Kirk owns and operates a cow herd of about 100 cows with his family. He is very proud of the fact that his operation, that focuses on market show steers and heifers, is family run. While his wife, Julie, and daughter, Kyra, are occupied with Kyra's barrel racing career; his son, Ky, is really into the cow herd and genetics. When discussing Ky's interest in the cattle industry, Kirk said, "I foresee a little more emphasis put on the cow herd because he likes it so well." 2. WHAT/WHO GOT YOU STARTED WITH CLIPPING AND FITTING CATTLE? Kirk's grandfather is who helped him get started. As time went by, he started clipping for different people. He watched a lot and listened to a lot of people. Kirk pinpointed 1981 as his take off year. "1981 was a special year for me. It is probably the one that got me known on a bigger scale. In January, I rode the train out to Sterling, Colorado to Don Lebsock's, who had Chi bulls, to clip and fit a steer for his daughter, Julie's, last year at the National Western Stock Show and the steer won! This was the same year as the Lautner raised steer, JR, that won about every show he went

36 THE SHOWTIMES JULY/AUGUST 2012

to. I fit and clip JR all across the Midwest. After that year, the phone started ringing and I started making contacts. I began traveling farther than I had ever traveled before. I fit and clip for sales and show cattle. I worked for Hartman in Nebraska, Dr. Wize in Texas, and finally Jimmy Herald in Leedy, Oklahoma where I met my wife. These are top points that influenced where I am at." 3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ANIMAL THAT YOU HAVE EVER WORKED ON? "There are three of them. As mentioned earlier, JR that won Denver in 1981. Then the Schneider steer "Cheddar" that won the Colorado State Fair in 1993. Even today, Bob May says that that steer is one of the best steers he has ever seen. Finally, there is the steer Ky won Denver with in 2009; just because of the magnitude of the National Western and also, because he was not an easy one to get broke and shown. It took a lot of commitment on our family from a disposition standpoint. So many days, we didn't even know if we'd get him there." 4. WHAT PART OF THE CALF ARE YOU THE BEST AT CLIPPING/FITTING? There is no special part of the calf that Kirk likes to work on best. He finds it to be a tough question as grooming trends have changed so much over the years. While he spends a lot of time on the top line and tail head, he doesn't get zeroed in on any part. He feels you must look at each calf as an individual. 5. DO YOU PREFER WORKING ON HEIFERS OR STEERS? "While I have had more recognition from steers because I have been more heavily involved in that, I enjoy heifers as well. Overall, it doesn't matter to me, I like both of them, but you have to clip each differently. Any time that you are clipping you are trying to make that animal look its best, no matter what it is. You try to create a balanced, eye appealing overall package. Clipping has never gotten boring, because each one is a new challenge and the whole time you are trying to figure them out to look its best."

1. WHO THEY ARE...WHERE THEY CAME FROM... I was raised in Oklahoma and have lived in the state my whole life. I grew up showing heifers and steers and had some success in the show ring which encouraged me to make show cattle a part of my long term goals. I currently operate Lucky Strike Show Cattle in Stillwater, OK. I have built my operation from the ground up over the past years selling fall and spring born heifers and steers. I run about 40 head of club calf cows and raise some of the calves I sell through AI and embryo work. I also travel all around the Midwest looking for the best prospects that I can find for the families that I help. We take pride in selling very high quality in a small quantity selling about 80 to100 head a year. I sell cattle to 4-H and FFA exhibitors all across the country and have been fortunate to have had winners in many states across the nation. My wife, Blayne and I have been married for six years and we have one son, Kelton who is 4. We are expecting a little girl, Kennedy this summer.

that come to mind but the one that probably meant the most was this past year's Tulsa State Fair Grand steer. The young man that had that steer is one of the most dedicated and hard working teenagers I know. He had lost his very good steer the year before in an accident three months prior to the show and had to sit it out. Instead of quitting and giving up when things didn’t go his way, he came back, worked harder and got his steer looking the best he possibly could and got the win. It was a great feeling.

2. WHAT/WHO GOT YOU STARTED WITH CLIPPING AND FITTING CATTLE? My father has been in the cattle business the majority of his life and he provided me with a great knowledge base about feeding and evaluating cattle. He helped me to select all of my own show animals and I started doing my own fitting and clipping with the help of my brother, Robert in high school. I always challenged myself to be better at it by watching older more experienced fitters and incorporating what I saw. As I got better, I began doing all the clipping and fitting for kids within my ag chapter and county. Like they say, “practice makes perfect”. During high school and college I had the opportunity to work for one of the premier show cattle operations in the nation which enabled me to develop my skills to another level by consecutively working on good ones. I continually work to change and modify the way that I present animals as judges focus on different traits in the ring and as our cattle change with the industry. I have always been a big believer in the saying, “You can never learn too much!”

5. DO YOU PREFER WORKING ON HEIFERS OR STEERS? I enjoy working on both heifers and steers. I like how different it is to get them ready from their condition to the way they are presented. I really enjoy the challenge of making a heifer look stout and big enough boned yet still keeping that maternal, sound structured, feminine look. Heifers are enjoyable but there may be nothing better than a shagged out fat steer that is twelve o’clock and getting him perfect to hit that ring for the last time. When you have a fat steer that is presented as good as you can get him and he is out in the ring and you get that slap, it is a feeling that can’t be explained.

4. WHAT PART OF THE CALF ARE YOU THE BEST AT CLIPPING/FITTING? I like to try and put equal emphasis on every part of a calf when I clip it, but it is hard for me to turn down a hairy back leg when it is time to fit one. I like to put my own style to the legs while keeping their structure looking flawless. I do enjoy dressing the legs but I enjoy presenting that perfect silhouette when every part is put together correctly.

"It is so much different now then when I got started. There are a lot of great clippers now and I attribute that to rules having kids fit. One thing I would like for people to remember is that you can hire what you think is the best fitter and clipper in the nation, but if you don't do your work at home, that fitter is just a fitter."

CLIPPERS - AND FITTERS

MINERAL POINT, WI

Bob May

1. WHO THEY ARE...WHERE THEY CAME FROM... Bob May was born, raised, and resides in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Family makes up the foundation of Bobby May Show Steers and May Cattle Company. As he grew up showing cattle with his siblings, Bob and his wife Jodie have carried on the same tradition with their own children: Shea, Jaclyn, Brock and Lauren, and his nephew Jon Gevelinger. Bob's passion for show cattle, however, does not stop with his own family. He enjoys selling calves and working with kids - passing on his knowledge and enthusiasm for cattle at the same token of forming friendships and memories. 2. WHAT/WHO GOT YOU STARTED WITH CLIPPING AND FITTING CATTLE? "Ken Jacobsen from Wisconsin taught me the most about clipping when I was fifteen years old. At that time, I also competed head-to-head with Kirk Stierwalt in Iowa. Kirk and I have always been friends and through competition and observation I became a better clipper and fitter." 3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ANIMAL THAT YOU HAVE EVER WORKED ON? "There are three of them. Brock's steer, "Bullet," that won Kansas City in 2005 has always been a favorite of mine. "Spooky," the steer that Jessie Stinson won Kansas City in 1992 with was, to that point, the best steer that I had ever been around. His win may also be the most emotional win that I have ever been tied to; because Robbie, the kid who helped with that steer and family, died at my place at the age of 25 on June 11, 1992 while playing basketball out by the barn. That day, he had wanted me to clip that steer to

38 THE SHOWTIMES JULY/AUGUST 2012

get him ready for the Belt Buckle Bonanza; but as it was so hot out, I decided to wait until the next day. Robbie was one of the most inspirational people I have ever been around; he was always upbeat. At 15, he was diagnosed with cancer. He always insisted that cancer was not going to beat him. In the end, it was not the cancer, but a heart attack that killed him caused by all of the drugs he had taken weakening his heart. When "Spooky" won Kansas City, it was overwhelming as Robbie had always believed in and loved that calf. Finally, a calf that I would consider one of my favorites was in 1986, when a local boy that was legally blind kept a steer at my place that went on to win the Wisconsin State Fair." 4. WHAT PART OF THE CALF ARE YOU THE BEST AT CLIPPING/FITTING? "My favorite would have to be the tops and the hip." 5. DO YOU PREFER WORKING ON HEIFERS OR STEERS? "While my heart has always been tied to the steer barn, I enjoy working on both heifers and steers."

1. WHO THEY ARE...WHERE THEY CAME FROM... I come from a cattle background. My father has fed cattle all his life, and my grandfather fed cattle before him, so I have always been around cattle. I am a very competitive person and want to win every show that I go to. That drive is what keeps me going. I do a lot of listening to pick up on different things…little things. My philosophy is, if you get to the point that you cannot learn anymore, you need to quit. 2. WHAT/WHO GOT YOU STARTED WITH CLIPPING AND FITTING CATTLE? My father showed steers when he was growing up, so I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Duane Hilbert and Scott Hessman also had a big part in getting me started clipping and fitting cattle. I learned a lot from them by just watching them clip. I was 16 the first time I clipped and fitted my steer by myself; he was Reserve Grand at the World Steer Show. 3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ANIMAL THAT YOU HAVE EVER WORKED ON? My favorite animal that I have worked on is the Grand Champion Steer at this year’s Fort Worth Stock Show; I felt he was one of the best steers I have ever worked on. It is a very sweet feeling to raise a calf like that and then clip him as a fat steer and he wins a show that is as competitive as any in America. 4. WHAT PART OF THE CALF ARE YOU THE BEST AT CLIPPING/FITTING? The part of clipping I enjoy the most is the neck and top, and I really like fitting their tail head.

5. DO YOU PREFER WORKING ON HEIFERS OR STEERS? There is no question that I prefer to work on steers. I have been very fortunate to be involved in such a great organization as Bonham Show Cattle for several years. I have had the opportunity to work on great steers that have won every national show and many state fairs across the country.

Judging Market Beef with

Brandon Callis

H

i, I’m Brandon Callis of Brenham, TX. Just a brief history about me. I grew up very involved with junior livestock shows from an early age, competing in 4-H and FFA events and showing all Market animals.

After high school graduation I attended Connors State College and was a part of a very competitive livestock judging team. From there I finished up my undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University and was fortunate to be a part of the 2004 National Champion Team. I then choose to attend Kansas State University where I received a master’s of science in animal breeding and genetics. I am currently an instructor and one of the livestock judging coaches at Blinn College. My wife (Kelly) and I and our two kids run a small herd of Simmental Influenced cattle. When I start to think about evaluating Market steers I try to keep two main things in mind. One: it is a “Market” steer’s show and second it is a “market steer Show”. I am very basic in my evaluation. Market cattle should first have muscle, as we all know muscle is the product that we eat called beef. So I tend to be very critical of top shapes and I am still old fashion I like to step behind cattle and study their hip and quarter. Cattle should also provide an easy feeding

Brandon Callis will be evaluating the market beef at the 2012 Colorado State Fair this summer! BY BRANDON CALLIS, TX

look or fat steers should look to have the appropriate amount of finish. Finally, structure has become a very important factor in separating the good ones from the great ones. When I look at structure I tie it directly into balance. An animal should look comfortable when they travel hopefully having a long stride and a level topline. I also try to keep in mind that a good fat steer may not flow and move as effortlessly as a big time female, partly due to the fat that they should have higher muscle content. Finally, when I step off to the side of those cattle I want one built great from their shoulders back with a neck that is positioned correctly on their shoulder. Some would say I like short neck ones. My response is no, I just like the neck to sit where it is supposed to sit (at the top of the shoulder blades). Extremely long necked ones are great to look at, but they also tend to resemble a prospect or a steer that is not fat enough yet. To sum it up, stout, muscular fat cattle that are balance and have the right structure to handle their body mass are what I prefer. It will be a huge privilege and a blessing to be able to work with the youth at the Colorado State Fair this year. Thanks BC

T

he tip this month is going to be based on selection. It’s getting to be that time that many of you are thinking about finishing this year as well as already thinking about next year. In the selection process I have a few things or guidelines that I like to follow to help make the year as successfully as possible. Decide as a family before you ever leave home a few things. 1) Decide what you are going to buy. Heifer or steer? What breed? The only advice I have here is that if you have younger kids to put them in a small breed in numbers so when you go to the show they have a better chance of being at the upper end of the class to build confidence. 2) Decide what you are going to spend. This can be a deep subject but ALWAYS remember the more you spend the more you win is NOT the truth. The truth is the more you work the more you win. The highest priced calf with little work equals nothing but an average priced quality calf with the right effort equals a winner. In the livestock show world we buy animals. Some families buy vacations,

RV’s, motor cycles, boats, etc. while others buy drug rehab, lawyers, and teen pregnancy. So always remember that the money spent here is hopefully teaching responsibility, dedication, and reward. 3) Decide where you are going to buy. Don’t buy off someone because you think you have to, buy off someone you like and trust. You need to trust the guy you are buying from because I would hope they would guide you in the right direction to a calf that fits you and your family's needs. That person is also going to be your teachers and hopefully your kids mentor. Now when you set out to find your next project here is the biggest piece of advice I can give you… Don’t get in a hurry!!! You will be much more satisfied with your purchase by waiting until later to buy. The later you wait to buy for next year the more it takes out the guess work on the way the calf will turn out. So wait until late fall to make your purchase. Good luck at the shows this summer!!!

RANDY DAVIS pastor

T

here is something truly special about the cattle industry and the individuals within it. On Saturday, June 16th, as families from all across the country pulled into the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio for the 2012 National Junior Maine-Anjou and Chianina Heifer Shows, they were tired, hot, and prepared for a week filled with competitions and activities. The wear from the previous days' travels coupled with the preparation for the following week's schedule, however, did not prevent people from gathering in the show's large blue and white striped tent for a church service that was held on Sunday afternoon.

Pastor Randy Davis leading a church service in Lima, Ohio during the 2012 National Juior Maine-Anjou and Chianina Heifer Shows

Listening to Pastor Randy Davis preach in Lima, Ohio

One of my favorite things in life is a good sermon. The type that makes you reflect on not only how you live your life, but one that immediately grabs your attention as if the preacher is speaking directly to you. God never ceases to amaze me. For as I sat at a picnic table with my fellow AJMAA Junior Board members, surrounded by exhibitors, parents, friends and family, Pastor Randy Davis of the First Assembly of God in Lima, Ohio, delivered his message. It was incredible how an individual, who was familiar with our lifestyle, but not directly immersed in it, could speak about competition, work ethic, and priorities in a way that not only tied into the Junior Nationals, but into our life on a dayto-day basis. Looking around the tent, in addition to

Person of Interest

looking relieved for finding cover from the scorching temperatures, I saw that the words coming out of Pastor Davis' mouth were hitting home with everyone in attendance, not just me. Prior to the service, I had heard nothing but good things about Pastor Davis from Cameron Alexander, who knew him on a personal level. After hearing him preach for about forty-five minutes, I understood what Cameron had been talking about. Not only did Pastor Davis share God's word with us in a setting where people are usually focused on cattle and competition, he stayed around after the service to meet with people and get to know them. In addition to this, at the conclusion of the week, he took the time to come back to the show to give the prayer at the awards banquet. As I shook Pastor Davis' hand and talked with him and Brad Winegardner for a few minutes, I was reminded how God has filled the world and our industry in particular, with some amazing people. While we all possess a passion for cattle, our lifestyle requires us to spend weeks on the road, living out of hotel rooms or campers, and usually dirty from head to toe. In the month of June alone, I attended the Maine, Chi and Shorthorn Junior Nationals; and I know others attended even more than that on into July. It was a true blessing to have Pastor Randy Davis provide us with a church service where we would otherwise go without. His character and dedication to living a Christian lifestyle was inspiring.

Show Mom

Rita Hoblyn

Behind Every Showman is a Show Mom.

H BY RITA HOBLYN, NE

onored, nervous, and excited is how I felt when Lisa contacted me about doing an article for the Showtimes Magazine. Journalism isn’t in my background, but as you all know being a “Show mom”, we wear many hats. After visiting with my family, I decided it would be ok to share how our family became involved in livestock and showing. My story is proof that 106 THE SHOWTIMES JULY/AUGUST 2012

if anyone has a desire, and drive, they can also do it. Three days a week, you will find me working at the Natural Resources District, and the rest of my time is spent with the kids, or helping Larry with his Pioneer seed business or with the livestock. Larry and I are fortunate to have three children. Cassandra is 22, and is now out in the real world working as a Surgical Technologist in Omaha. Jesse is 15, and a sophomore at York High School, and Jami is 8, going on 25. All of them are very active in the livestock industry. I hope to emphasize how fortunate my children have been to have grown up in Agriculture, and to show livestock. The wealth of knowledge they have gained, and life skills are irreplaceable.

Guess I will start with a little history; I grew up on a farm near Prague Nebraska in a very strong Czech community. My dad was a farmer, and mom a housewife. Growing up as an only child was lonely, so at an early age I found my passion for cattle. Believe it or not, I attended a one room country school two miles from our farm, and had the same teacher for 9 years. My fondest memories are of being outside with my Dad, and helping with the cattle. He had a cow/calf operation, and feedlot. I learned quickly how to carry silage and corn with a bucket, and learned all of my cow knowledge from him. Most of my time was spent in the barn, not rinsing and

brushing, but taking care of bucket calves. Every week we would frequent the area sale barns, and at an early age I knew how to buy cattle at an auction. Bet you all can’t guess how many baby Holstein calves can fit in a trunk of an old Buick? When I was old enough to know what 4-H was, I wanted to join, but my parents said it wasn’t necessary, and we had too much work to do on the farm. After High School, being a wise age of 17, I moved to Lincoln and attended UNL, and quickly learned they didn’t have a program for “rock star wannabes”, so enrolled in Cosmetology school that is when Larry and I met.

Larry’s job took us to York Nebraska, and we have lived here since college. After living in the big city for a couple years, I realized it wasn’t going to work for me, so we rented a small acreage by town with a little pasture and barn, and guess that’s where it all started. After being in the area for a while, we were able to rent pastures nobody wanted. Both of us worked full time jobs, and built our commercial cattle herd. A few years ago we were able to purchase a place by town, where Larry’s business is and our home away from home, the BARN. When Cassie was old enough for 4-H, it was Larry who got it rolling. We didn’t have a show barn back then, but did have a great friend who let us use a part of his

barn at his feedlot. Our very first show was the local county fair. Have vivid memories of Cassie not being big enough to see over her 1300 lbs steer. We pushed her into the ring, as she was crying hysterically. Our family and all the spectators kept telling us we were terrible parents for making her do such a thing. We started out slow, going to a few jackpot shows in the area, and our county fair. Little did we all know, it was a life style change that brought our family to where we are today. Remember I said being a “showmom”, we wear many hats?? With those hats comes a broad wealth of knowledge in many areas, I can proudly say being a showmom has taught me so much, organization, drive, compassion, patience, and diploJULY/AUGUST 2012 THE SHOWTIMES 107

macy. One hat this showmom wears is a Chef Hat. Starting out with nothing, we had to be as thrifty as we could when we traveled. I learned quickly how to be creative with a crock pot, and what sandwiches didn’t turn to mush in the cooler. We quickly made friends, who we found out were just like us. None of us had cell phones back then, so after every show we would plan where our next show would be. It was decided what we were bringing for food, and refreshments. Our group’s showboxes and stalls seemed to always the gathering place for many of our friends during and after the show, which we gladly welcomed. Amazingly, nobody ever got sick from the many crock pot creations. We didn’t have antibacterial hand sanitizer either, and many not so clean hands enjoyed Vern’s meatballs, and nobody every complained. The kids have learned to appreciate a warm nice meal after a long show; also how amazing warm towels at your table can be when your faces are full of black paint. The other hat a showmom wears is the one of the Travel Agent. Not sure how, or why, but I been elected as the groups personal travel Agent. If anyone wants to know about the fine establishments we have stayed at throughout Nebraska, and many other states, feel free to give me a call. There is one particular establishment we have all been banned from, the owner in his army fatigue and combat helmet, wasn’t impressed with our 40 plus show friends taking shelter at his motel, while tornado

sirens’ were blaring. The kids have all learned how to travel, and be safe, and have a great appreciation of clean bed or space on the floor, and a hot shower. Speaking of storms, that brings me to my next hat as the Meteorologist. What did we do before radar on our phones? We would enjoy the beautiful weather at spring jackpot shows, especially when they get over mid afternoon. One I will never forget was few years ago, we spent hours enjoying each other’s company, as the kids played, and nobody bothered to pay attention to the ominous skies above. After many times of pointing out the black clouds forming in the west, half of our group thoughts it was best to drive home and dodge the storms, the other half, seemed to think the Super 8 could withstand Tornados. Neither of our groups made very wise choices that day, thankfully we are all still here to talk about it. The kids have learned over the years to always be aware of your surroundings, and be thankful for friends along the highway where you can take shelter. Mother Nature is very powerful, a life lesson none of us will ever forget. My trucker hat is also one of my favorites. From packing, and cleaning the trailer in the middle of the night, to the many miles on the road. Somehow, most weekends, “hey, you want to drive?” I must admit, I don’t do anything I don’t like to do, so it’s ok, except for those late nights. Our knowledge of the best truck stops and gas stations across is an added bonus. From the music, to the stories while we are all trapped

in a confined area, I could write a book. The kids have learned how to be safe in our travels, and the green handle on the pumps at the gas station, doesn’t always mean diesel fuel. Another valuable life lesson. Is there a Doctor or nurse anywhere???? I would say that “hat” is needed at every show. From getting run over by your calf, getting kicked, stepped on, or somehow on an adventure with friends after the show is over, one of the showmen comes back from the nearby creek with no socks seeking immediate medical attention??? Everyone would laugh at me when I kept Jesse’s medical kit 4-H project stashed in the nose of the trailer. It still gets used every show, “Do you have a band aid”, or ” Do you have any tweezers, I have this hair in my finger”. My favorite is on the early mornings, “Please give me some Advil, my head hurts”. The kids have all learned how to take care of their health because what we do is so physically and mentally demanding. Jesse is diabetic, so we all try to keep a watchful eye on him. We have to try to stay as healthy as possible, so we can do what we love for many years to come. From starting out at our County Fair, to jackpots, to State Fair, Aksarben, Kansas City, Louisville, Denver, and many Jr. Nationals across the United States, I have loved every moment with my family and friends and crew. The kids have learned so many valuable life lessons, that can’t be taught in a classroom. Sometimes I look back at all the places we have been, and people we have met along the way and think “Wow, did that really

happen?” The kids have learned to enjoy every moment, for what it is, being together and doing what we love. Every show is an adventure, in one way or another! The many hats we wear as a showmoms is truly amazing! I am not sure sometimes how we get it all to come together, but it always does. From all the entries , to travel arrangements, to packing the trailer, getting the stock ready, making sure things are taken care of at home, to packing the kids and ourselves. One of the things that I love about the show world is it is truly not an individual sport. It takes a team of support to pull it off, and to succeed. I am very thankful for everyone involved who helps it all happen, without

our team, we couldn’t do what we all love to do. Our children have been very fortunate to have made so many friends across the country, and the life skills they have learned are priceless. Sometimes the lessons and situations they have been placed in seem far from “fair”, but as we all know life isn’t fair, and we all have to work every day to better ourselves, and better our livestock world for the generations to come. I would like everyone to know, that showing and being a part of this crazy lifestyle is possible for anyone, you just have to have drive and dedication and surround yourself with good people. Not that I don’t look forward to seeing everyone at the shows,

but have come to enjoy the weddings, graduations, births and gatherings, where we can all relax in clean clothes. I take my hat off in respect of our friends that we have lost. I am so blessed to be a part of this giant show family, we may not always all be on the same page, or even book, but we all have a common ground, and passion that brings us all together. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to meet so many people, that I can proudly call friends. Looking forward to seeing you all soon somewhere down the road! ▪ If you are interested in being featured as a future Show Mom in an upcoming issue, email us at theshowtimes@yahoo.com. Whitney Walker, Arkansas

I love the feeling of waking up at 5am and getting in the truck for a 14 hour long drive any day. But that time it was different. I was super excited to just get there and unpack the trailer and set up the camper! I think of that as somewhat of fun. Everyone else may think of it as a chore, yet I think it is fun! Last year, I was so blessed to be able to accomplish the achievement of winning a national cattle show! I couldn't stop thinking about that moment when the judge picked me and my heifer, Katie Babe, for Champion Overall MaineTainer Female! That was the biggest highlight of my summer. So back to this year, when we got there, I was so nervous about all of it, the show and the contests. It was all really, really fun to do. My princess duties, seeing good friends like Chloe and Cade Van Vliet, and Becca and Maci Chamberlin. But, that wasn't it. I loved the fun night too! After all of that, it was time to crack down. Show was the next day and I didn't think I was ready! But it worked out. I went in for my princess duties and after that I went to my heifer to help. She was ready, so we sprayed pink oil and we were ready. I went into the ring with confidence and scared of the outcome. (CONTINUED ON PG 126)

(CONTINUED FROM PG 124) I knew I should just try, but I was in class with a lot of other kids! It ended up being a battle between Jordan Crall and I. Yes, a battle in class. Once we got through the class, I had felt better, a little. There were a lot of good cattle in division as well. The funny part was that my brother, Mason Walker, came in right behind me with reserve! We had a pretty good division I'd say. So I went back to being princess for a while until grand drive. I was so nervous at that point. We went in the ring, confident (mostly), yet I wasn't as worried this time. Mr. Elliott was looking to have a pretty hard time choosing the right cow. I knew that I would have to incorporate some more showmanship and step it up a notch. So I did. After the judge made comments, he went to pick a champion and reserve. The moment he slapped my heifer, a shock flew through me. I just realized that I had won the same title two years in a row! I was so, and still am, as happy as I can be!! I have accomplished an amazing goal for myself. And if they don't know, I want to thank everyone for helping me. Man, getting up at 6:30 every morning really pays off!

When my heifer was chosen as the National Champion Shorthorn Plus Female it is needless to say that I was speechless. My family and I work so hard day in and day out to achieve titles such as this and to reach a goal that we were striving for is an amazing feeling! This was a day that I will truly never forget and I want to thank everyone who helped me and “Blue” achieve our goals! Showing cattle is my passion and as my show career is starting to come to an end I realize how humbling experiences like this can be and I am beyond grateful for this experience!

Behind The Product

The Smart Sensation is in my opinion the best new tool for show cattle to be developed in years. The concept behind it was to design a handy application for using a brush with the benefits of having repetitive rows of the proper teeth.

SMART SENSATION COMB

The concept behind the new Sullivan Supply comb.

BY JOHN SULLIVAN, IA

Scott Kinzer is Sullivan Supply's New Product Manager for 22 years, and grew up showing cattle with my family. Scott and I spent countless hours the last 18 months creating the Smart Sensation. We had great input from Sullivan Farms show barn crew and many top operations around the country for multiple opinions. It was extremely important to create the brush with the proper size of handiness, proper teeth spacing for ease of use in all hair coats, and to include a ball point tip for stimulating the hair. The flexibility of the teeth design was also very important - not too stiff to be harsh on the hide, nor to soft to hinder the ability to hold-up. Countless hours was spent on the proper teeth spacing, size, shape, and flexibility. They have all paid off in the new Smart Sensation design. Successfully creating a gentle, stimulating feeling to the skin while the repetitive rows of teeth create a lift that amplifies the volume and body of hair lifting off the hide. This has never been seen before and is the basic goal of this new Sullivan Supply product. We are currently developing a jumbo sized Smart Sensation that will be completed this fall. This product will be 10 rows of teeth giving customers a larger brushing coverage. Both sizes, the jumbo size 10 row and the current 7 row will be available. If you want more information on the Smart Sensation, please feel free to contact our office for more assistance. Good Luck at your state fair show season. John Sullivan

Joshua 1:9 "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

FCC Message

His Purpose

He is in complete control of everything. BY BRAD HENDERSON, CO

I Chronicles 16:8-15, 23-36 "Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon His name, make known His deeds among the people. Sing unto Him, sing psalms unto Him, talk ye of all His wondrous works. Glory ye in His holy Name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord and His strength, seek His face continually. Remember His marvelous works that He hath done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth; O ye seed of Israel His servant, ye children of Jacob, His chosen ones. He is the Lord our God; His judgments are in all the earth. Be ye mindful always of His covenant; the word which He commanded to a thousand generations....Sing unto the Lord, all the earth; shew forth from day to day His SALVATION (Hebrew word Y'Shua which is JESUS). Declare His glory among the heathen; His marvelous works among all nations. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: He also is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the people are idols: but the Lord made the heavens. Glory and honour are in His presence; strength and gladness are in His place. Give unto the Lord, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto 186 THE SHOWTIMES JULY/AUGUST 2012

Matthew 28:18-20 "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen"

His name: bring an offering, and come before Him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Fear before Him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The Lord Reigneth! Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein. Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the Lord, because He cometh to judge the earth. O give thanks unto the Lord; for His is good; for His mercy endureth for ever. And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy Name, and glory in thy praise. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the Lord." David gave this speech when they brought the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem. David's words ring so true today. God has blessed us in so many ways. It's easy to get bogged down in the issues of our life and forget there is a theme and a purpose to everything around us and everything that touches our lives. He

is there, He made you and everything around you- He is in complete control of everything and He knows where it is all headed and He has a purpose for each and everyone of us and we all have a role to play in the battle for our hearts and minds and everyone around us. And He is our heavenly Father and He loves us beyond our comprehension. Please take time to Thank Him, Praise Him, and Ask Him to lead and guide you according to His perfect will. If we give Him the reins, and let go by totally surrendering our lives to Him, He will take you places you've never dreamed were possible and give your life the purpose we all long for.....His purpose. â–Ş

NEBRASKA STATE FAIR

ON FONNER PARK

a new location... a new facility Bill Angell Interviewed By Lisa Reid

N

ebraska State Fair on Fonner Park In 2010, the Nebraska State Fair introduced a brand new livestock show facility that is the first of its kind in Grand Island, Nebraska. Having been constructed in an impressive eleven month period, supposedly the last slab of concrete was poured the day before the fair. Relocating the fairgrounds 90 miles west of its previous host city of 109 years, Lincoln, Nebraska, transported it away from the metropolitan area of the state to a more agricultural based territory. Not only does the fair's new location draw in more livestock and agriculture individuals and exhibitors from the western side of the state, it is in a central location for the entire country. This, along with the unique benefits of the new facility, makes it a prime location for more than just the Nebraska State Fair, but for multiple other events such as the National Junior Heifer Shows. Nebraska State Fair Board member Van Neidig of Battle Creek, Nebraska was very instrumental in overlooking the design of this state-of-the-art facility. Having raised Red Simmental, Red Angus and composites for over 25 years, coupled with showing all over the country, Neidig compiled various ideas as

200 THE SHOWTIMES JULY/AUGUST 2012

well as his knowledge of livestock and the showing industry to devise a facility that was built with livestock shows specifically at mind. This is not just another barn and arena. The Nebraska State Fair at Fonner Park consist of three livestock barns and climate controlled exhibition building and Five Points Bank Livestock Arena. Some of the standout elements of the facility are the drive thru barns, wash racks, electrical capabilities, state of the art internet access anywhere on the grounds, natural lighting and ventilation. The barns were designed with high ceilings and "Big Ass Fans" that allow air to circulate. One of the facility's most distinctive features are the high definition, color video screens located in the livestock arenas and all of the barns that broadcast the same thing across the barns. This allows exhibitors and individuals to watch the show even when they are not located in the arena. From size and technology to being livestock based and influenced, the Nebraska State Fair has created a place that will become a major location in the livestock and agriculture world.

The Ottensemeier Family 212 THE SHOWTIMES JULY/AUGUST 2012

"Showing cattle is not just a hobby, but a passion that my family and I truly enjoy." BY ALLYSON OTTENSMEIER, KS

Allyson Ottensmeier

A

s soon as I could perch myself on the armrest next to my dad in the old feed truck, I got involved in our family’s cattle operation. Besides following my dad and grandpa everywhere, I started bottle feeding orphan and twin calves before I went to kindergarten and officially

started showing heifers when I was 6 years old in 4-H. My older sister, Lindsey, also showed cattle, so I went to a lot of shows before I was old enough to show and somehow got in on a lot of belly scratching while calves were being groomed or clipped and poop scooping. When I was finally old enough, I started showing, and still show, Simmentals and Chianinas. My parents have always said I couldn’t just show the animal; I had to raise it and care for it. And if there is something I don’t know how to do, then I should learn how to do it so I

can someday do it myself. My biggest obstacle to date is backing the stock trailer. My family and I have always lived in Oskaloosa, Kansas. This is a small town about an hour west of Kansas City and about 30 minutes north of Lawrence, home of the Kansas University Jayhawks--my mother’s alma mater. Many years ago, my dad purchased the farm we live on from my great grandfather. Dad was born and raised on a farm and was mostly a commercial cattleman until my sister and I started showing cattle in 4-H and now we have

several registered Simmental and Chi cattle as well. We also raise corn, beans and wheat. My mother has a degree in elementary education from KU and a law degree from Washburn University in Topeka. She has her own private law practice and concentrates in family and juvenile law and serves as a guardian ad litem in Jefferson and Jackson counties. She worked for the Kansas Child Support Enforcement Unit for over 18 years as well and served as a board member for the Women’s Domestic Violence Task Force. She was not raised on a farm, so she’s had to learn everything she knows about cattle since she met my dad. Lindsey, my older sister, earned her bachelor’s degree in health science administration this past May from Washburn University as well as a degree as a physical therapy assistant. She works at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. She, too, showed cattle most all her younger years and was very involved with her traveling competitive softball team that played all over the nation. She now helps coach little girls’ softball in her spare time and helps with our family’s cattle operation as well as doing physical therapy through our local health department's home health program in the evenings and some of her day’s off. In high school, I graduated valedictorian of my class and was a Kansas Honors Scholar. I played the flute and piano and enjoyed 214 THE SHOWTIMES JULY/AUGUST 2012

being captain of the cheerleading squad and being on a multi-county competitive team. I was also active in Big Brothers Big Sisters and FCCLA and always chose a beef-related topic for my public speaking and teach and train project. Unfortunately, our high school has never had an FFA

program. In fact, a lot of students at my high school couldn’t believe that I actually washed a “cow” several times a week. The Ottensmeiers, however, have a long history of involvement with 4-H. My grandparents were community leaders and my parents were community leaders for over 15 years, until retiring a couple of

years ago. My 13th, and final year in 4-H was last year, but our family still helps at the fair, and my dad remains active on the Fairgrounds Improvement Committee. Our family and a few others helped organize the original Jefferson County Spring Beef Show in 1998, and we all still help with that; and our family was very active on the new beef and sale barn construction committee. My mom has always stressed the importance of community service work, so I booked countless hours on various projects and committees and was ultimately awarded the Jefferson County Alliance Spirit Award for Community Service. Over the years, my sister and I have shown cattle, pigs, lambs, and horses. The beef project remains our all-time favorite. We worked hard and earned several grand champion trophies, plaques and ribbons for our animals, our showmanship and our records books. We did not have a long family history of showing cattle, so we’ve had to learn from our many, many mistakes and from the generous guidance of others in the beef industry. Likewise, I’ve not had the opportunity to be on a judging team in FFA, but have taken in a lot of judging clinics and demonstrations through the Junior Simmental and Junior Chianina Associations besides just asking a lot of questions. I joined the Kansas Junior Simmental Association when I was nine, and have been an active

member. I have served as a board member, treasurer, vice-president; and in June, I was elected president of the Kansas junior association. I have always helped organize and facilitate the state show, and it sounds like before I am too old to show as a junior, I may get in on helping organize and facilitate a regional show to be held in Kansas. Showing cattle has become a family event for all of us over the years and something we enjoy doing together, although it can be a little tense when we’re packing up and on show day. I always joke around saying that we don’t know how to travel unless we have the girls and the stock trailer behind us. Our family has traveled all around the nation to show cattle, and we’ve met so many good people over the miles. Some of our family’s best memories (and stories) are from cattle shows or in the truck while driving hours to the next show. I may not be the exhibitor with the most purple banners, but the knowledge, skills and experiences that I have accumulated raising and showing cattle over the years are irreplaceable. And besides the life skills, nothing can take away the friendships and social networking with those who share a common interest that have been afforded me while showing. I am currently a junior at Kansas State University. Yes Mom, GO WILDCATS! I am pursuing a degree in elementary education with an emphasis in special education. I love teaching kids and working

busy week at school. When I’m not busy with school, I work for Quint Huncovsky, owner of Huncovsky Marketing. Quint runs an advertising and marketing business, and is constantly busy updating FATSTEER. COM, sending out internet blurbs, and putting on the Kansas Beef Expo in December. Though I spend most of the time taking care of his daughter and son, I also help him with various tasks around his office, which has sparked my interest in ag marketing. Once I finish my elementary education degree, my plan is to pursue my marketing degree with an eye toward teaching, raising and marketing our family’s cattle, and I’ve been working this summer to establish my own feed business.

with special needs children. I’m thinking if I’m creative enough, I can work calves and animal science into my elementary and/or special education classroom instead of a hamster or fish tank. I am on the Dean’s Honor Roll at K-State and a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. From the day I left home for college, I knew I was going to miss “my girls” and being able to work in the barn everyday. I am thankful to live only about an hour and a half from Manhattan so I can make frequent trips home to work with my heifers. There is nothing better than a little barn time after a

Showing cattle is not just a hobby, but a passion that my family and I truly enjoy. In just a few short years, my junior showing cattle career will be over. It is hard to think of a summer without multiple junior nationals. It is even crazier to think that I will be standing outside of the show ring instead of leading a heifer/ steer inside it. I look forward to staying active in the show cattle world, though, and my hope is to sell show calves in the next couple years. ▪ The Showtimes would like to thank Allyson for sharing her story and wish her luck on all of her future endeavors!

KOLT Cattle is sponsored by Showmaster®

Without a doubt, the SHOWMASTER® line of Complete Feeds and Supplements has taken our program to a new level. I think having an option like adding the SHOWMASTER® Concentrate to an already existing ration gives an instant edge. Having a ration that you are comfortable with is the key to feeding cattle, adding the power packed Concentrate pellet just adds to what you already have, giving you a mineral pack, energy, and gut builder all in one. Cattle stay on feed, and are healthier with reduced acidosis problems. The Complete Feed Rations we deal with are second to none. I am totally comfortable with sending a customer to the feed store to pick up whatever Showmaster feed their project is in need of. It’s simple, whether trying to finish a fat steer, or freshen a breeding heifer there is already a ration made just for you. The difference is what they say is in the bag, is in the bag, every time! The consistency and freshness of the feed is superior to any product we have ever dealt with. We will continue to feed and recommend SHOWMASTER®! - Nate Kolterman, KOLT Cattle

Since we started feeding SHOWMASTER®, we feel that Winegardner Show Cattle has been able to go to the next level. There are many advantages to the feed. For one the freshness and consistency bag after bag is second to none. No matter which type of feeding stage your in, you can always count on it being the highest quality every time. From babies to big cattle it has allowed us to raise the bar not only selling them but also our customers success no matter which level of competition they are at. - Tyler Winegardner, Winegardner Show Cattle Winegardner Show Cattle is sponsored by Showmaster®
