April Sires Bring May Buyers Sires, Sales, and Success
S
pringtime is a refreshing time of the year. Since all of the national shows are over with until Junior Nationals kick-off at the beginning of the summer, it is the time of year when you get to really start working with your calves for the upcoming show seasons, attend multiple hog, lamb, and goat sales, travel to livestock judging contests, and pull your trailer numerous miles to show prospects at jackpots. I have so many memories of spending every Saturday during the spring competing at livestock judging contests across the state, showing hogs in the Colorado Junior Swine Association’s Show Pig Circuit, or making our yearly trip to Riverton, Wyoming to show calves at the Mountain States Beef Expo (making sure to stop in the small town of Shoshoni for ice cream). With calving season underway, it is always fun to look at your cattle and think about what genetics you want to implement into your calves in order to produce the next
“great one.” In this issue, we are excited to showcase some of the top sires available; those with proven success, as well as sires that are new for 2012! Suiting to the issue, be sure to check out our newest Hall of Fame Inductee on PAGE 38. We are also excited to have our feature exhibitors’ article on the Foster Sisters from Texas on PAGE 110 where they share with you their “Passion for Family and Cattle.” This issue also includes great features from Kim Caldwell talking about her life as a “Show Mom” and on the selfless act of Ashtin Guyer where her great character truly shines through her actions this past summer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the great response from our Fifth Year Edition in January, Here’s to five more! God Bless, Lisa Reid Owner/Field Editor

Show Mom
KIM CALDWELL Behind every showman is a Show Mom ELMWOOD, ILLINOIS
I HOPE THAT ONE DAY OUR KIDS WILL SAY, “I WAS SO LUCKY TO GROW UP IN A LIVESTOCK FAMILY.” - KIM CALDWELL
M
om, do you have my show shirt and jeans? Did you make any snacks for the weekend? Kim, Do you have the health papers? These are all familiar statements that are made around our house as we get ready to leave for a weekend of showing pigs. Trying to get the trailer loaded with equipment, animals, kids and supplies is a full time job. But when asked if we can’t wait for life to slow down, or if we would be missing an upcoming show, the answer is always the same…NO! As Todd would say, we live each week just waiting to do it all over again! My name is Kim Caldwell and I guess I qualify as a show mom. My husband Todd and I have been in the show industry since we were children. I grew up showing Angus Cattle in Illinois and Todd grew up showing crossbred steers in Indiana. We were both lucky enough to have parents and grandparents that introduced us to this way of life. We both knew that our lives would always revolve around the show ring and the livestock industry. With the help of both of our families we were able to create Caldwell Show Cattle. Since that time, Todd has been able to buy 36 THE SHOWTIMES MARCH/APRIL 2012
and sell show cattle across the country. The families that have been a part of our lives are not just people, they have become part of our extended family. We have traveled to shows to help support them and for Todd to help their children achieve their dreams. It has been such an honor to be a part of this process and we have made lifelong friendships along the way. Thru our 17 years of marriage we have been blessed with three wonderful children. Maddison is 14 years old and will be entering high school next year. She is active with cheerleading and spends many hours baking at home. Olivia is 9 years old and is in the 3rd grade. She loves basketball and working with cattle. Cole is 6 and just started kindergarten last fall. He loves the farm and is frequently found in a tractor with Grandpa. When Maddison was old enough to show we had always thought that she would be leading a heifer or steer into the show ring as we had growing up. However she had other plans for us! Our lives were forever changed when one of our farm hands offered to bring a pig over for the county fair. Let’s just say it was love at first sight. Since that time our roles have somewhat changed. We still travel to shows to support the kids that
purchase their cattle from us, but now we are on the other side of the process also. We are now a show family teaching our children the value of hard work in order to achieve their dreams. We get to spend almost every weekend from May until August traveling with the kids from show to show. Oh the memories we have made! When individuals outside of the livestock industry ask why do you do this? The answer is always a simple one. What better way of life could we give our children? They are able to meet so many people from across the country and are able to experience such a wide range of opportunities. Opportunities that our parents gave Todd and I. As I sit in the stands and watch one of our kids walk into the ring, it is hard to explain to someone, what a sense of pride I feel. I know the hours that are spent at home exercising, feeding
and caring for their animals. The many road trips that we have completed in search of the next “great one.” Then to see their smiling faces as they receive their ribbons is a feeling that words cannot describe. So let the questions continue…”where are my boots mom? Did you pack enough Gatorade? Where did you get our rooms at this year?” Our lives may be fast paced and hectic at times but I would not change a thing. I hope that one day our kids will say “I was so lucky to grow up in a livestock family.” Those are the memories that Todd and I remember from our childhood. What better gift could we give our children? So on to the next show…maybe we will see you there creating those moments with your loved ones. ▪
The Showtimes would like to thank Kim for sharing her family’s story and wish them luck in the future. 37

These long standing, industry changing genetics are continually producing some of the business’s most successful females. • His highly proclaimed maternal granddam, by Touchstone, produced one of the most popular Angus steers ever in club calf history, winning the Iowa Beef Expo, Angus Jr. National and the Iowa State Fair champion banners. She’s as impressive as any Angus cow - there are few like her today! • The influence of POISON ARROW on the powerful Simm-Maine influenced females at Duello Cattle Co. is eagerly anticipated. This exciting young herd sire is no “middle of the road” bull. $106,000 Grand Champion Market Beef ► Baylor Bonham, OK
When I sat down in early December to write my bio and highlights of winning the NAILE Steer Show in Kentucky, I never imagined I would be doing it again in January after winning the National Western Steer show in Denver. Wow, my life has been full of blessings lately, and I am so thankful. Since I am just 11 years old, I had never shown in Denver. I wanted to go there to see what it was like and to get experience so I would know what to expect, and things just worked out for me. Showing at the National Western was a great experience; it is a great show with great people. There is definitely one thing that separates that show from any other—having my calf on display at the famous Brown Palace Hotel in downtown Denver. That was something I will remember as long as I live...a big steer in the middle of a fancy hotel lobby. I was really nervous about it, but “Stripe” was really calm and let hundreds of people pet him. It was amazing. At 11 years old, I have memories that most other kids never get to have. I just feel so lucky. I would like to thank Dick and Butch Ames of Ames Construction for purchasing my steer in the Denver sale of champions. Thank you to the National Western Stock Show and to all the people in my life that made it possible.

Brandon’s thoughts on the Grand Champion Hog at the 2012 National Western Stock Show. BY BRANDON OGLE, IL
I
NATIONAL
I was honored and privileged to be asked to judge the National Western. I have always thought about what it would be like to judge a show of that caliber. It was my first chance to judge a “major” show like Denver and the show and the staff were top of the line. I enjoyed the show a great deal and thought the quality of the hogs and people were first class. It was an opportunity I will always remember and cherish.
WESTERNSTOCKSHOW
A Logical Champion
felt he was a standout and a logical champion. He was the defintion of a combination hog in my opinion. He was wide, big centered, heavy muscled, stout, and sound. He was presented to a “T”, fresh and natural and he was shown extremely well, that barrow was comfortable in the ring and moved around it with authority. I feel at this time he is the best market hog I’ve ever had the opportunity to judge. I knew when he entered the ring in his class the show was over, he hit me really hard.

60 THE SHOWTIMES MARCH/APRIL 2012
My name is Shane Heizer and I’m from Hagerstown, MD. I am 16 years old and a junior in high school. This was my first Denver and one that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life. I have been very fortunate to have had so many wins on and off the show circuit. I’d like to first thank my parents for all their hard work and support. I'd also like to thank the Cherry Knoll Crew for buying in to my heifer and getting her ready for Denver. Thank you to everyone that has ever helped me over the years without your help none of this would have been possible!
Polled Hereford Heifers
Reserve Polled Hereford Heifer ► Bailey Buck, OK
Winning the National Western Polled Hereford Heifer show this year was an amazing and humbling experience. It was so special to me because this was the third time we had achieved this goal. TCC Miss Diana 01’s mother, TCC Miss Shelby 82 ET, had won in 2010 and her mother, LCC Two Timin 438 ET had won this same great honor in 2006. That’s three generations of champions, and we raised two of them. I am the sixth generation of Hereford breeders in my family so this really meant a lot to me. All the hard work that my family and I had put in paid off in those 15 minutes that I was in the ring. It was the greatest feeling in the world. I am 16 years old and a Sophomore at North Platte High School in North Platte, Nebraska.

The Best Two Steers
iven the opportunity to judge the best steer show in the world for the past two years is a task this judge will cherish forever. Both years the Grand Champion Steer separated himself from the field “without doubt these two champions are the best two steers I have ever had the pleasure of judging.” The biggest decision each year was which steer would I choose for reserve champion. I truly believe what makes Fort Worth so grand is the sheer number of families that participate year after year. The memories these families are making along with the their hard work, determination and diligence puts the Fort Worth Steer Show on a pedestal.

Have Passion for Family & Cattle LOCKNEY, TEXAS
W
e are from a very small, West Texas town, known as Lockney, where it’s so flat that you can see for miles and miles. However, we are the sixth generation that is blessed enough to call this place our home. In our family agriculture and showing cattle is not just a hobby for us it’s our passion. Our family farms cotton, corn, wheat, and milo. We also have our very own cotton gin called D&J Gin. Though farming has been in our family for years, our dad, (Jody) and uncle (David) grew up showing steers and heifers in the state of Texas and developed a passion for it. They both had dreams of one day raising and successfully showing ChiAngus and Simmental registered cattle. So they did just that and made their dreams reality by starting the nationally known cattle company, Foster Brothers Farms. Our parents, Jody and Shawnda, have been married for 25 years and had us three girls. Senee’ and Segayle both live in Lubbock, TX and attend Texas Tech University. Senee’ is 22 and will be starting Dental Hygiene Background Photo: Don Dickson Photography
the memories that we made when we were younger, getting up at the crack of dawn to feed and getting the heifers washed and brushed dried are all part of what brings us Foster girls so close. These are the memories that we cherish for a lifetime and so thankful to be able to be part of such a wonderful family that is able to show great cattle.
School in the fall. Segayle is going on 21 and will graduate in May 2013 with a bachelor degree in Agricultural & Applied Economics. She is currently on the livestock judging team at Texas Tech. SyAnn is a senior at Lockney High and will be attending Texas Tech in the fall and majoring in Animal Science. Family is one of the most important factors in our life and we would not be anywhere without our wonderful parents who have supported and given us the opportunity to do the things we love to do. We could not thank them enough for all they do in our daily lives. All we ever knew was showing and raising cattle, so growing up we were the girls who spent most of our time in the show barn breaking and washing calves or helping dad on the farm by driving a tractor. Senee’ and SyAnn were mostly on show barn duty, I guess dad only trusted Segayle to drive the tractors. Most of the time we were in the barn by ourselves and I can assure you there were some water fights and more than likely fighting going on in the barn. Our dad always used to joke about that’s why our heifers were so gentle was because they had us screaming, fighting girls running around them all the time. All 112 THE SHOWTIMES MARCH/APRIL 2012
Showing cattle has definitely been a family event for us. If we ever went on “summer vacation” there was ALWAYS a stock trailer being pulled behind us headed to a Junior Nationals. We went to our first Chi Junior Nationals in 1999. It was in Murfreesboro, TN and we absolutely fell in love with the breed and the people that were involved with it. We’ve only missed a few since then and those “people” have become “family”. In 2008, we attended our first Simmental Junior Nationals in Wichita Falls, TX. We have been able to get very involved with both of these GREAT breed associations and have made friends with so many amazing people. Developing friendships is the thing we love most about showing cattle. Getting to meet people from all over the nation who share a common interest is what we look forward to every show. No cattle operation can ever have success without great people on your team. Jered Shipman joined out team in 2000 and became a permanent fixture in our lives shortly after that. He and his family, Haley, Brecken and Bodie, are like family to us girls, and Jered taught us so much as we worked with him daily in the barn. When they left Lockney and moved to the Dallas area, there was a definite whole in our lives that will never be replaced. Joe Seale is another one that has been on our team for several years. His expertise in cattle feeding ad his witty sense of humor has been invaluable to the success we have had in the show ring. Then along came Josh and Cyndie Lesky. They currently live here in Lockney and continue to
be escalating our cattle herd to excellence. We thank God for surrounding us with good people who have helped to mold us into the young women we have become. Since we have been involved in the Chi breed for so long and having our dad as a past Chairman of the Chianina Board we all wanted to follow in his footsteps. Senee’ decided to run for the National Junior Chianina Board at the 2004 National Junior Heifer Show in Atlanta, Georgia. She was a board member for 6 years and held multiple offices. Segayle soon after was also elected to be a director on the Junior Board and currently is the President of the National Chianina Junior Board. SyAnn of course followed her big sisters and this year has been her first year as a board member. One of our greatest accomplishments was back in 2001 at the North American International Livestock Exposition. We exhibited both the Grand and Reserve Junior and Open ChiAngus female with two heifers that we raised, Daisy and Sunflower. This was the first time that one family had won all 4 holes and we still treasure that moment and will never forget it. This past year has also been one to remember. At their respected Junior Nationals last summer, Segayle exhibited both the Reserve ChiAngus and Reserve Simmental heifer. In November, we switched those heifers in SyAnn’s name so she could show them throughout her senior year. Louisville was another one to put down in the books for our family. The Simmental, FBFS Xclamation, added another exclamation point to her career and won Grand in both the junior and the open shows and the ChiAngus, FBF Xceptional,
had an exceptionally good day and won Grand in the junior show and Reserve in the open show. Since this is SyAnn’s senior year and our last go round in the Major shows in Texas that was a very special moment for our family that we will never forget. We have been very blessed, to say the least, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our crew who work so hard everyday to get our heifers looking there best on show day. When SyAnn walks out of the show ring for the last time at the 2012 Houston Stock show, the Foster girls presence in the Major shows in Texas will sadly come to an end. The lives of the Foster family will be forever changed at that moment, but as it says in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,” Our faith in God will carry us into the next chapter of our lives. We really cannot describe in words what this journey has meant to each of us, but we are so thankful that God allowed us to walk down the path with a great family and a passion for raising and showing cattle. For us showing cattle always meant more than walking into a show ring and winning a purple banner, it’s more about the impact we can make on someone’s life and the friendships we have built along the way that continued to fuel our passion for raising and showing cattle. ▪ The Showtimes would like to thank Senee’, Segayle, and SyAnn Foster for sharing their story, congratulate them on all of their successes, and wish them luck on all of their future endeavors. The Showtimes Magazine Presents
SHOW.RITE TIP
T
his time of the year is a time that many of you get discouraged because your cattle are rubbing or loosing hair. Just a few thoughts... If you have been showing and clipping them they are more apt to lose their hair earlier. If not they will be more apt to hold it longer which can be good or bad. If you were getting ready for a certain upcoming show such as a state expo show, that is good because the hair will be fresh but if you are getting ready for a state fair, lets say in August that is bad. If you're getting ready for a summer time show you want them to go ahead and lose it so you can get the new hair started back. They can lose it by brushing, combing,
use of a grill brick, or plucking it off with clippers. Which ever the way you choose to get that old hair out is your decision, but the quicker you get it out the quicker you get it back. Another thing you might face this time of the year is rubbing and the one thing I would do is to limit as much as you can of the things or places in their pen to rub on. Also and probably the most important is keep the skin and hair from drying out. Most think they are getting lice and such but in reality it is just dry skin. Use oils and hair conditioners to keep that skin and hair as fresh as you can to keep them from rubbing especially if you are trying to show. Just a few thoughts on hair this time of the year. Good luck at the shows!

IN TODAY’S WORLD, KIDS HAVE A LOT OF
CHOICES.
Dave, Lucy, Ashtin and Nalaney Guyer
Ashtin Starts County Scholarship Ashtin Guyer of Robinson, IL Donates 100% of Her Champion Steer to the ASH Scholarship. 152 THE SHOWTIMES MARCH/APRIL 2012
Some of these choices can be life changing and fortunately there are programs like 4-H and FFA. Ashtin Guyer is a 10 year old 4-Her that has made some good choices that will make you stop and think about what we as adults need to be doing more of to give more opportunity to these kids as they get older. Ashtin is the daughter of Dave and Lucy Guyer of Robinson IL. Along with her sister Nalaney they have been in the showring since they were able to understand which end eats. LOL! Starting in the pig ring the girls have made their mark and are still continuing to compete today. Ashtin has recently taken a large interest in the cattle ring and she recently had the honor to exhibit at the NAILE and be named 2011 Reserve Grand Champion Steer. But we all need to learn a little lesson on what Ashtin did this past summer at her county fair in Crawford County Illinois. With the help of her dad and mom, Ashtin came up with a great idea. She was named Grand Champion Steer at the county fair and with 4-H programs being cut out every year due to lack of funding, she decided to start her own program. Ashtin is a type of person that if you give her $20 to go to town and buy something, she would probably go and buy something for
If you have a Giving Back Story that you would like to have featured in an upcoming issue of The Showtimes, please contact Lisa Reid at theshowtimes@ yahoo.com or 303.941.1004.
you. She is a very giving person. So, Ashtin took her steer to the 4-H auction and donated 100% of the proceeds to start a scholarship fund within the county. With the obvious support of a number of local friends and businesses the steer fetched $14,100. This scholarship, Ashtin with her Reserve Grand Champion Steer at the 2011 NAILE
named after Ashtin, was called the “ASH” scholarship, standing for Agriculture Student Honor. It will recognize an outstanding 10 year 4-H member within the county each year. Ashtin also donated the carcass from her prize winner to the Oblong Christian and the Carmi Baptist Children’s Homes. “I was so excited when the meat was processed because we got to go deliver it to the Children’s Home’s and I would get the chance to meet the kids!” Ashtin says. Ashtin and her family just want to give back to something that has blessed them so much. Ashtin’s story is just one example of how to help and if we all would try to do our part to help our youth of today then we can have more feel good stories like this. Anything we can do in today’s society to keep our leaders of tomorrow on the right path, let’s do it. ▪

Where Are You Supposed To Be?
“And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah, But David tarried still at Jerusalem.” 2 Samuel 11:1 BY BRAD HENDERSON, COLORADO

hapter 11 of 2 Samuel records David’s fall. The story of David, leading up to this chapter, is an amazing lesson in life and leadership. John Wayne once said, “Life is tough, but it’s tougher if you’re stupid.” Life is tough and challenging and it’s those challenges and the painful lessons learned through those storms of life that builds true wisdom. The fool keeps making the same painful mistake over and over. Going through the storm and coming out the other side makes us stronger, wiser, and prepares us to handle the next challenge. Life is a lot like climbing a mountain; the only difference is you can stop on a mountain, to take a breather, and not lose ground. In life, the instant you stop climbing- you start sinking. Life is not static- like time, it is constantly moving forward and the instant you stop working toward your goal, you start falling away from it. David’s life to this point wasn’t easy, it had been struggle after struggle, like climbing a mountain. I used to joke, the 172 THE SHOWTIMES MARCH/APRIL 2012
good news about hitting rock bottom is the only way you can go is up from there. (Then I learned the hard way you can go sideways!) There’s a flip side- when you’re on a mountain top, when you stop climbing and decide this is a great place to pull off the trail and enjoy the fruits of your labor, there’s only one way to go……down. Up to this point David had led his men in every battle. He was out front where he was supposed to be. Notice how the verse above starts out, “…at the time when kings go forth to battle…”. It’s very clear, at this moment David was supposed to be leading his men into battle. But instead, he decided he would stay home and send his commander Joab to lead in his place. Most of you reading this should know what comes next. It’s the story of David sliding into sin. First he lusted with his eyes (he wanted something that wasn’t his), then he acted on that lust, and it led to the murder of a courageous and honorable man….a man just like David used to be. Have you ever heard someone talk about the “slippery slope”? It means you take one step off the path of doing right and you slip down a muddy hillside. It’s almost impossible to get back
to the path because your first decision causes a mudslide beneath your feet carrying you deeper and farther down the slope. A lot of folks may say David’s first step off the path God wanted him on was his lust for Bathsheba. I think his first step onto the slippery slope is when he didn’t lead his men into battle. When you aren’t where you are supposed to be, and doing what God wants you to be doing, you open yourself up to disaster. And not just for yourself. David drug his family, his warriors, and the nation of Israel down with him. God forgave him for his sin but it took years and years, and the death of thousands, including his sons, during the ensuing civil war that occurred, for David to climb out of that pit that took just moments, and one bad initial decision, to slide into. None of it would have ever happened if David had gone out to battle with his men and been where he was supposed to be. I thank God for Brian Reid and his wonderful family asking me to write this article each issue. The Showtimes is a very special publication because it reaches, in my mind, the most important segment of the livestock industry……
families. The farming and ranching families of America are the heart of this great country. The entire family reads the Showtimes Magazine, not just the young exhibitors. These parents are special- they care deeply about their children, and about their future, and are willing to heavily invest their valuable time and money into their kids. And the young readers are special- they are the cream of this countries youth and they are the leaders of tomorrow. I want to speak to both parents and youth regarding David’s mistakes above. Parents, are you where you’re supposed to be? Are you leading your family? Are you out in front guiding your kids through life’s storms, pits, and snares that will pull them down and destroy their lives? Are you at the center of the battle fighting for your marriage and your kids and equipping them with the tools to not just survive
in this world but to thrive despite the adversity, struggles and darkness that will come at them and try to destroy them? Or, do you have someone else doing your job for you? Think about that. Young men and young women, are you where you are supposed to be? Do you realize how precious, important and critical this time of your life is? You will never get it back- so don’t waste it. Your decisions right now will impact the rest of your life….for the better or for the worse. Are you surrounding yourself with people and friends that lift you up in life and make you better, or are they dragging you down? Is your pier group, and the pressure they exert on you, pushing you and challenging you to aspire to great things or are they pushing you down the slope that leads to mediocrity and laziness or worse darkness and bad decisions that you will regret the rest of your
life? Are you where you are supposed to be and doing what you are supposed to do? God has a purpose and a plan for each of you reading this article. Are you walking with Him, living that purpose, being where you are supposed be and patiently waiting for Him to give you the next cue? You know if you are there or not. Take a moment, before you turn the page, to reflect on your life, your family, and your friends. Are you on the right path? Ask your Maker to show you where He wants you, what He wants you doing, and what He wants you to change in your life. If you aren’t where you are supposed to be and surrounded with the right people, ask Him to lead you there. He can and will change your life and take you places you’ve never dreamed were possible, as long as you give Him the reins of your life and follow where He leads. ▪
Bible Verses:
Ecclesiastes 11:9 “Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.” Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence, of things not seen.” – editors note: What you truly believe is evident to everyone around you, and your actions speak louder than words. Recipe
Recipe submitted by Jennifer Bruns, TX
Almond Butter Cookies 1 ½ cups sugar 1 cup butter (softened) 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla ½ tsp. almond extract 3 ½ cups flour 1 tsp. baking soda Cream together sugar, butter, and cream cheese until fluffy. Blend in egg, vanilla, and almond extract. Stir flour and baking powder together, and add to creamed mixture. Divide dough into two sections, wrap in plastic, and chill overnight. Roll to ¼ inch or desired thickness and cut with cookie cutters. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 375° for 9-11 minutes or until cookies appear dry, but before edges turn brown. They will stay soft, so be careful when handling. Yield: about 2 dozen depending on thickness & size of cookie (and how much dough you eat!) Frosting: 1- 32 oz. bag powdered sugar, ¾ cup milk, 1 tsp. softened butter, ½ tsp. almond extract. Adjust milk to desired consistency. This is usually enough to frost 2 batches of cookies.
JENNIFER BRUNS
I grew up on a Hereford ranch in northern California and always knew that being involved with show cattle would be a part of my life. Currently, my husband Bob and I live in Pleasanton, Texas and both share a love of cattle. We trade show steers and follow them around throughout the year and also both work full-time as Landmen for an Oil and Gas Company. I love to cook more than I love to bake, but when I do make something sweet, it is usually these cookies, which are an old family recipe that always get lots of compliments. Somehow my Mom had the patience to let me make these as a kid, and I’ve been baking them ever since. MARCH/APRIL 2012 THE SHOWTIMES 175
