ho’s there? Opportunity. Brian, Lisa and I had the opportunity to Skype with Mark Hoge’s merchandising class at Western Illinois University this past spring. Although it’s initial objective was for them to interview us about The Showtimes, it turned out allowing us to reflect on our background and all of the opportunities that have been presented to us through the livestock industry. Opportunities do not come knocking on your door; rather, they are presented to you when you work hard to stand out from the pack.
for the upcoming summer. To start the summer off, I will be attending the Honor Show Chow VIP in Missouri. Without taking a breath, we will be heading off to numerous Junior National Shows. We are looking forward to being the Official Media Partner of the National Junior Hereford Expo. The Showtimes will also be highly involved with the Maine/Chi Junior Nationals with Lisa being the show’s announcer and Brian and I doing special videos and projects throughout the week.
It is crazy to think that this magazine marks the forty-second issue of The Showtimes. From cover to cover, everything down to the new Hall of Fame inductees captures the essence of Junior Nationals. Don’t miss the Junior National Preview on page 231 for informaton and interesting facts about the different breeds.
We are very excited about the upcoming State Fair Edition of The Showtimes. Don’t miss your chance to advertise in this big exposure issue. Knock! Knock! This is opportunity calling.
While working on this issue, we have been busy planning out our schedule

Please be sure to stop us at any of the shows to talk. Getting to know people with our same passion is the most rewarding part of our job.

ARIZONA NATIONAL UPDATE
THE NWSS PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
The 68th Annual Arizona National Livestock Show is set to be held December 27, 2015 through January 1, 2016 at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix, AZ. The Show Committee is gearing up with a lot of positive changes and new developments. Additional updates will continue to be posted on the ANLS website and in the Premium Books.
The National Western Stock Show has a rich history in Denver, CO dating back to the first Stock Show in 1906. The show started as a livestock show in the historic “yards” and now has evolved into a 16 day event featuring rodeos, horse shows, Colorado’s largest Western trade show, and the most prominent livestock show in the country.
The Junior Market Auction Date: Friday, January 1, 2016. A New Year’s Eve celebration December 31, 2015 at the ANLS will take place. Open to all exhibitors and their families. Pork Quality Assurance (PQA or JPQA) training is required for all Swine Exhibitors exhibiting in 2015. Details of requirements for online training and approved trainings will be listed in the Premium Book. Exhibitors in any other species are NOT required to have these trainings
at this time. A Hereford/ Tamworth Division will be offered at the National Affiliate Pedigree Barrow Show and at the National Affiliate Pedigree Breeding Gilt Show. Age and Membership Rule: Any Junior Exhibitor in Market or Breeding shows must be a member in good standing of a national livestock organization (4-H, FFA, Breed Association, Youth Livestock Organization, ANLS, NCBA NJSA, Team Purebred, CJLA , etc.) And any Junior Exhibitor in Market or Breeding Divisions must be at least eight (8) years of age and less than twenty two (22) years of age as of January 1, 2015. For a complete list of changes and new rules to the Arizona National Livestock Show, please visit anls.org or call the Arizona National show office at (602) 258-8568.
2016 NWSS PROSPECT SHOW SCHEDULE CHANGE The National Western Stock Show has changed the schedule for the 2016 Prospect Show. The prospects will now arrive on Thursday, January 21st. They will be processed on Friday, January 22nd. Both the Steers and Heifers will show on Saturday, January 23rd in Denver.
National Western leadership is currently working with a multitude of partners including the City and County of Denver, Colorado State University, the Museum of Nature and Science and History
Colorado to explore a site plan that would reinvent the complex for the next 100 years. The National Western Center represents a visionary transformation of the National Western Complex and Denver Coliseum sites into a mustsee destination and regional asset, enhancing these current Denver landmarks through creative year-round activity. With a combined 130 acres of redeveloped land, the National Western Center will support Denver’s global standing as a world-class hub for the Western way of life.

PAYTE BROWN
HOW SHOWING LIVESTOCK HELPED ME BEAT CANCER BY PAYTE BROWN, CA
I have been showing sheep since I was in 6th grade. I loved getting ready for a show and hanging out with the sheep. In fact, sometimes I would do my homework next to the sheep pen. Well of course one day my lamb took a bite of my homework; when I told my teacher what happened, I got the “you have three eyes look”. The point is, I loved my sheep and spending time with them. When I started showing we had to keep the sheep at a friend’s house because we did not have a house with property. We called her the “lamb lord”. During my 8th grade year my mom would drop my sister and me off on her way to work. We would feed and work the animals and then ride our bikes to school. Then after school we would ride our bikes back and would feed and work the animals again, until she picked us up. This had been my routine for the previous year, so this should have been really easy. Unexpectedly, I found that it was very difficult and I would have to walk my bike instead of riding it. I tried out for my schools flag football team and I just could not keep up. The next indicator that something was not right was I could no longer carry a bag of feed. My mom took me into to see my pediatrician and they did a finger poke to check blood counts. Normal hemoglobin is between 12-16, mine was 5.6. The doctor sent us straight to the hospital. They had a room waiting for us and we were greeted by an oncologist. The first night they took my blood and ran all kinds of tests, by the next morning we had an answer as to what was wrong. The doctor told us I had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Cancer. I spent 6 days in the hospital starting treatment, having the first of many spinal taps and bone aspirations. The doctors gave me a list of things I could and could not do. I had a port placed in my chest so I could receive medicine and they could draw blood. Due to this, the doctors said I could not play any contact sports. No more football, no wrestling, and no baseball. When we started the journey the first reaction of the medical staff was for me to stop showing animals. They had
never had a patient with animals before and worried about the risks. This was never going to be an option in my mind. So they did a lot of research to make sure that it was safe and we worked with them to come up with a plan to keep me in the show ring and keep me safe. During the journey the nurses and doctors became more and more aware of livestock, 4h and FFA. They became vested in each animal I had and sometimes not so happy when auction time came. I tried to bring them into my world, a world that most people in the city have no idea about. There were times when my counts were low and during these times I was not to touch the animals. This presented some challenges because the animals needed to be exercised, fed and the pens had to be cleaned. I would have wear a mask or depend on someone else for help. We came up with a system to walk the sheep with the four-wheeler. My dad and I built a tie down system that we were able to halter them to the back. I would drive and my sister would sit on the back watching the sheep to make sure they were doing ok. We would walk them up and down a dirt road. We would get the strangest looks. The chemo weakened me and I wasn’t able to bend in order to reach down to adjust their legs without my knees giving out. I would put them on the shear stand and put their feet in the correct position to help train them. I had to really understand my lambs and work with them so that I could just use my knee to adjust them. I would use different pressure points in their chest to move their legs. My stance for bracing looked as if I wasn’t driving my animal but when the judge would feel the lamb they would see that they were
pushing and the lamb was set perfectly. My first show after I was diagnosed was a jackpot. I showed but it was not my best show. I got tired fast and just did not show well. I was frustrated but kept practicing. My next show was another jackpot. I showed against my sister, we came in 2nd and 3rd in the market class so we were excited to see what we were going to do the following week at the county fair. I was scheduled for a chemo treatment and blood counts on Monday. Unfortunately, when we got the results my counts were bad and my immune system was very low. I had two choices: I could stay at home and not show or I could spend the week wearing a mask in the barn. I am sure the doctors and nurse practitioner wished I would have chosen the first option. During the fair, my family would feed, get my animal ready and hand it off to me as I walked into the ring. That year was the first time I lost my lamb in the show ring and I was heartbroken. All the sheep did was jump but I was not strong enough to hold on, I lost my balance and I fell down. With help I caught my lamb and got back in line. I learned I wasn’t as good as I once was but I wasn’t going to stop doing what I loved. This wasn’t the last time I would lose my lamb, but I learned to accept it, I would catch my lamb and do the best I could. At the beginning of my freshman year I had to have radiation along with chemo. This made me lose my hair again and made me very tired. Not the way you want to start your freshman year. You are already self-conscious now throw in a bald head, not cool. Throughout the year I was able to attend and compete at the FFA National Convention in Floriculture, I served as Green hand president and was involved in everything FFA I could. I had a few stays in the hospital. In fact the day I was to get my FFA Green hand degree I had to talk my doctor into letting me out of the hospital so I could attend. That year I continued to show my lamb at a few
jackpots, AZ Nationals and the county fair. I didn’t do great but I kept showing and working with my animals. FFA and my livestock were one way I could escape. My sophomore year one of my best friend’s, decided she was going to show a goat. I convinced her to show a lamb instead. I would help by teaching her what I knew and board it at my house. I loved showing and everything about it. I wanted a belt buckle but I knew it would be very hard for me to get one. Chemo may have taken my physical ability but I still had the knowledge and was able to pass it on. My sister and I worked with her and taught her everything we knew about showing sheep. If I couldn’t get a buckle I was going to help her get one. Fair came and all the work paid off, she won Senior Novice showman and got a buckle. I was also awarded the Star Farmer award and outstanding officer for my FFA chapter which was a very proud moment. During the summer before my junior year I attended the State FFA camp. During the week I didn’t feel great but I was going to stay. We got back on Friday night and by Saturday night I was running a fever, with any fever I had to go to the ER for evaluation. Luckily I got some antibiotics and went home. The fever reappeared on Sunday and this time I was admitted with Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). I spent 8 days in the hospital, this was the longest time I had ever spent in the hospital. Again I learned that cancer was a big part of my life liked it or not. I had also applied for the Maricopa County Beef Outreach program that summer and was one of the lucky recipients. I wanted a new challenge and decided I was strong enough to handle a bigger animal. I was feeling really strong and would work my steer and lamb every day. I lifted weights so I would have the strength to handle him. We attended several Jackpots, the AZ State Fair, and AZ Nationals in preparation of the County fair. We did pretty well in all of our shows. I had great mentors and put
in a lot of hard work. Two months after I finished my treatment and despite all of the odds I got my first buckle at the county fair with my steer. It was a great fair, my lamb got first in my market class and I got 3rd in lamb showmanship. Through the 3 ½ years of treatment and many obstacles, I was not going to let cancer stop me from achieving my
dreams. Life is all about adapting to situations. I could have let cancer keep me down instead I chose to adapt. I would have a chemo treatment in the morning, go to school and work my animals in the evening. I could have used cancer as a crutch to get perks, I did not want people to feel sorry for me and treat me different. There were people I had known during treatment that had no idea I had cancer until they saw a post that I had finished treatment. It is safe to say showing livestock helped me beat cancer. It was my outlet and helped me focus on something other than my situation. Life will sometimes take you down a road you didn’t expect. It doesn’t mean you still can’t achieve your goals. Follow your dreams, do whatever you can to reach them. Showing is more than just about winning, it’s about the memories and the lessons you learn. Enjoy your time at the fair; work hard, make friends, and memories. The work may be hard but it’s rewarding and in the end you will look back and enjoy your time in the ring. ▪

Sandwiches: 2 packages (12 count) Hawaiian Sweet Dinner Rolls 1 pound thin sliced deli ham 1/2 pound thinly sliced swiss cheese Horseradish Mayo
These sandwiches have become a fair favorite menu item! They are served for friends and family that come for lunch around our campsite following the cattle shows at our county fair. Everyone loves and makes special requests for these flavorful sandwiches.
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. 2. In a bowl, mix together butter, spicy mustard, Worcestershire sauce, poppy seeds, dried onion and garlic powder. Separate the tops from bottoms of the rolls, spread on a thin layer of horseradish mayo and place the bottom pieces into the prepared baking dish. Layer about half the ham onto the rolls. Arrange the Swiss cheese over the ham, and top with remaining ham slices in a layer. Place the tops of the rolls onto the sandwiches. Pour the marinade mixture evenly over the rolls. 3. Bake in the preheated oven until the rolls are lightly browned and the cheese has melted, about 30 minutes. Slice into individual rolls through the ham and cheese layers to serve. Enjoy!

OWEN MACFARLANE
collegiate livestock judging
Hometown: Hat Creek, CA Judging Team: Texas A&M University Achievement: High Individual 2015 Houston Stock Show Sr. Collegite Livestock Judging Contest Quote: “The honor came with an enormous amount of hard work for myself, my team and all of those who competed.”
O EN MACFARLAN HIGH INDIVIDUAL FROM HOUSTON REFLECTS ON HOW HIS HARD WORK AND DEDICATION PAYS OFF.
I
was born December 14, 1992 in Redding, California, and by a year of age my Dad, Chuck Macfarlane, had taken a position as the Herdsman at Rogue River Ranch in Central Point, Oregon. It was a very prominent Purebred operation which in its time ran a large herd of Angus, Red Angus, Polled Hereford, and Gelbveih cattle. Most of my days as a child were spent riding along in a pick-up checking cows, and tagging calves as well as doing what I could to help work the show cattle. Needless to say I was hooked on the Cattle business at a very young age. As I grew with time, so did my passion for the cattle industry. I soon found myself, with the guidance of my Dad, in ownership of a handful of Angus and Red Angus based cows which were the start of my own project. We began breeding them to club calf
sires in hopes of getting some steers for myself to show as well as market to local 4-H and FFA members as projects. The amount of time spent in the barns and in the fields with my Dad are memories that can never be replaced and I hope there are many more to come. He was the one who taught me the importance of hard work, how to properly work hair, feed, clip, fit and how we didn’t need all the money in the world to still be competitive. He taught me the thrill of competition and with any success you may have, to act like you’ve been there before and refrain from being boastful. In the long run he’s the one who ignited my passion for the cattle game. It’s the little things though, the lessons that are taught through doing, lessons I’ve learned over and over again, that in that moment in time don’t seem like a lesson at all and are completely taken for granted, until the time came when the lessons
could be reapplied. After many years of success and many challenges in life I found my show career as well as my cattle on a back burner. Eventually my family found ourselves in California again, where I became heavily involved in our local FFA program at West Valley High School in Cottonwood, California. I competed In Parli Pro, Livestock Judging, and even was elected as the Superior Region Treasurer, followed by Vice President. After a time, I then went to live with my dad in Hat Creek, California and as a junior I found myself at Fall River High School in McArthur, California. As scary as it was being in a new school my newest Ag instructor Rick Neugebauer would become as influential on my path as anyone. “neuge” as we called him, judged many swine shows in the state of California, and his family had loads of success showing hogs all over the state. However, in a prominent farming community with little Livestock interest there was not much need for a livestock judging program before I got there; but Neuge knew how much it meant to me, and he did his best to coach me, as well as take me to the contests across the state. Under his supervision, I worked hard to prepare for each contest and eventually it had paid off. During my senior year I received a call from Dr. Clay Elliott, wanting to know if I would be interested in continuing my education while competing on a Collegiate Livestock Judging Team for Redlands Community College. Without question, and after a quick visit, I was all in on the idea. In my time at Redlands, we were molded by an extremely talented coaching staff consisting of Clay Elliott, Chase Reed, Tanner Winter, and Clint Mefford. We worked our tails off to be competitive, and ended up being successful, winning Kansas City and Louisville, Reserve Team in Denver, and 3rd at Houston. Along the way I was given multiple opportunities to attend very prestigious Universities across the country, but sadly, with a lack of supporting funds, I had decided to take a year off from school to try to work and put some money away to finish school. During this time I worked in a few different places all of which gave me a different perspective on the livestock industry and ultimately a better understanding of real world production. When the time came again
for me to choose the University that best suited me, in my heart I had one in mind, Texas A&M University, where I was happy to be accepted and now strive to complete my Animal Science Degree. Being named High Individual at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, has without question been the highlight of my judging career thus far. The honor came with an enormous amount of hard work for myself, my team and all of those who competed. It definitely wouldn’t have been achievable without the dedication of my coaches at Texas A&M university; Brant Poe, who may be the very best at knowing how to properly push my buttons in order to drive my competitive spirit and try to make me better every day whether we’re practicing, looking at sales online, or just talking about stock. Keaton Dodd, who’s ability to drive our team to success while remembering how to have fun, and do things with “Swag” is second to none. Dakota Moyers, our youngest coach who in many situations gives us the most helpful perspective since he was in our shoes less than a year ago. Alongside these three, I have 9 other coaches, my teammates, who I learn from every time we get together and I can honestly say there isn’t a group I’d rather be enjoying these experiences with! Though I was overjoyed to receive the High Individual title, this is only the halfway mark of our senior college season, we all still have a long way to go, many changes to make and a ton of personal growth to go through. In turn I would like to wish every team, as well as every competitor the best of luck through the Fall!

dave THIS ISSUE DAVE SHARES WITH YOU HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE TIME WE HAVE AND STAND HOPEFUL FOR TOMORROW. BY DAVE GUYER, IL
guyer's
Y
ou have all heard the line “time flies the older you get” and boy if that isn’t ever true! In writing this I guess, it is directed more toward the young crowd but you older ones can sit back and agree. My oldest just turned 14 today and for me that is crazy! Just yesterday we had her and today we are thinking about schools, cars, future, and thank goodness she would probably beat up most boys so most of them stay clear… not really, Ashtin is very sweet and thoughtful, but now that youngest one is a whole other story. Sorry Nalaney, but you
would punch a guy! Never the less I love them both, but they are growing up. I guess what I am trying to say is that many years ago I had many of my mentors always tell me about time flying by the older you get and I now am experiencing that myself. Now you can handle that in different ways. You can learn it the hard way on your own or you can listen to the old timers that have been there and done that. I, as an adult, a few years ago slowed some parts of my life up to prepare for what was to come and now the kids have filled, and then some, the gap I had created. Luc and I look back now and think there would be NO way we could be doing what we do today as well as what we were doing a few years ago. There’s not enough time in the day the way it is. Well that’s enough of my rambling and get to the point… To you adults, that are doing it the hard
way, don’t let the years go by and you look back and say you should have done things different. Life is short, be prepared, and respect it because you don’t know if tomorrow will be there. We lost a good friend in the business last month and Todd will be missed by many but I honestly feel he didn’t try to do it the hard way. I recall many times of him talking about his mentors and the respect for them. Now you young people you have the future ahead. Be sure to take in all you can, enjoy the business we live in and respect it as you would life. It isn’t going anywhere and if you treat it right, the livestock business will make you a living if you allow it. Work hard, it’s so hard to find good help now a days and you can say that’s a bit harsh but it’s the truth. I remember when I use to work for nothing just to be around the “big boys” in the business.
Listen to your elders, you have a great opportunity to learn things the easy way and save a lot of headaches rather than learning the hard way. To everybody, take advantage of the time you have because you don’t know what tomorrow brings. Leave good impressions with all you meet and come in contact with. This is good to write this stuff down because sometimes even I lose track from time to time and get off the path. We can’t change the past but we can stand hopeful for tomorrow. I guess what inspired this write up is that with my kids growing up, I look at them and wonder if they will or want to continue on the path I have chosen. But if so or not, I want to make sure that presently they are on the right path, and as long as they listen to the ones before them, it will be much easier to go down a well paved road
in the future. So to all you young people… watch what you do, say, and think today because it DOES effect tomorrow whether you are here or not. Thank you Todd for being a good husband, dad, and friend, because it’s proven that time does fly by and then it’s gone. You have many choices in different tools to help you in producing a successful project, but I contribute much of my personal success and highly recommend ShowRite feeds and Natural Solutions for Livestock Products. This combination is a winning combination at my place. Summer is coming on us fast, we are approaching that 120 day mark before the Midwestern county and state fairs, so it’s time to start preparing. Good luck and have fun at the shows!!! ▪

My how the time flies when you’re having fun!!! The Summer Junior Nationals are upon us. From cattle shows to pig shows, there is no shortage of places to be and show in the summer AND eat!!!!!
Next on my list in Grand Island would be “Uncle Ed’s Steak House.” I’m the first to admit this place is NOT for everyone, but I did enjoy the award winning steak. The atmosphere was a level above most dining establishments. It is not your our chain restaurant and is a very nice place to dine, relax and maybe discuss a little business if need be.
Brothers Houligan.” The menu and atmosphere here is awesome and nothing like what the outside looks like. It is quite an experience for a group of hungry stock show attendees. I would recommend a call ahead reservation due to the size of the establishment, but it is well worth the effort to go and enjoy the experience of this hole in the wall!!!!! I think I could write a book on eating joints in Tulsa, but I won’t. I do feel the need to share my favorite Bar-B-Que place; and that would be “Elmers BBQ.” This place has been around for 35 years and I can see why!!! There is nothing fancy here - just plain ole good cooking. From the tender fall off the bone ribs to the smoked bologna, this is the ULTIMATE in real pit Bar-B-Que in Tulsa. If I’m eating Bar-B-Que in Tulsa, it’s Elmer’s!!! Oh my, did I fail to mention the homemade desserts that I never have room for, but they are sure good back at the motel. Cobbler with a scoop of ice cream or maybe a slice of pecan pie, you be the judge!!! For that south of the border craving I’m going to let you do a little driving. “Los Cabos,” out on Broken Arrow Expressway next Bass Pro, just in case you need to do a little sporting goods shopping while you’re there! The menu at this place is unbelievable. I’m not sure how Tilapia fits into a south of the border diet, but I’m all IN on that one boy’s - I’ve been converted. I have actually detoured on a road trip just to dine at this place!!! You don’t have to worry about parking, there is overflow at the Bass Pro. I have not had anything off the menu that wasn’t at the top of the pile to recommend for someone else to try!!!
With the Angus Jr. Nationals being in Tulsa, I had to think about this one a little bit. I have several got to go to places in Tulsa, so I couldn’t help but share a couple of my very favorites again and throw in a couple of new ones for you to try. I have to start with “Talley’s Good Food Café.” This popular spot has been featured on Discover Oklahoma for one of THE places to dine in Tulsa! From the old diner style setting and the menu to the food, this is the first place that comes to mind when I’m asked where to eat in Tulsa! Talley’s is close to the fairgrounds with ample parking. I follow Talley’s with another repeat “The
Bad as I hate to, I have to close with no favorites in the College Station area as it is not on my frequent traveled map. I guess I’ll have to work on that area also. Once again, please feel free to contact me with your favorites. They don’t have to be in any particular place. You just never know when or where I’ll be and have the urge to try out that little hole in the wall!! Safe travels and good eating!
I have to start with an apology right off the bat…I do not have a favorite list of places to dine in Springfield, Illinois. I will be there this summer for the Chi/Maine Jr. Nationals and the CPS ‘Summer Type Conference;’ so I should be able to compile a list of favorites during my visit there and will share those at some time in the near future. That doesn’t mean I’m not open to suggestions - so please feel free to share your favorites with me so I can sample and share them. I have had good fortune to spend quality time in Grand Island, Nebraska and was lucky enough to stumble across a local establishment that is very stock show friendly. “Tommy’s Family Restaurant” has a menu that is the basic home town type cooking from the burgers, plate lunch’s and let’s not forget one of the best breakfast menus to be found anywhere. Not to mention the prices are right to take a family or gang of hungry stock show kids in to eat and not break the bank!!!

We would like to thank everyone who showed, judged, sponsored and supported the Blackout Jackpot 3 this past March. Not only was the show a way for us to give back to the industry we grew up in, it was also a way for us to work with our friends and and family doing something we love. We always look forward to designing graphics, backdrops, banners and awards for the Blackout each year. We have truely enjoyed getting to know the judges and exhibitors at the show. Thanks to everyone who took the time to travel and exhibit cattle at the Blackout Jackpot 3! We know how much work and effort it takes to bring and exhibit the quality of cattle that showed. A special thanks to all of our friends who helped work the ring
and set up the show. It wouldn't have been possible without your help! We greatly enjoyed working with Brad Winegardner and Matt Leo in the ring and appreciated you traveling to Loveland to judge. We also would like to thank Shane Bedwell and everyone with the Green & Gold for your support again this year. Finally, thank you to Travis DePorter for helping raise funds to make the Blackout Jackpot possible again this year! The numerous sponsors and people behind the scenes are what make the Blackout Jackpot possible. Sincerely, Brian, Laurie and Lisa Reid

JUDGING THE BIG ONE
beyond the backdrop
The judge of the Houston Steer Show shares how it felt to evaluate the cattle at the prestigious event. BY DAVE DUELLO, WY
Reserve Champion Market Steer Caeley Cody
H
ouston Steer Show 2015 was nothing short of an amazing experience. Oh how time flies…I had the honor of judging the Steers at Houston the last year they showed with hair and the first year they slicked them in the early 90’s. What an amazing difference at that time. That’s the last time I saw a slick one, by my choice. I truly enjoyed evaluating the cattle and even more enjoyed spending three days with Dr. Chris Skaggs, the Steer Show Superintendent, and his staff. Dr. Skaggs was my Judging Team Coach at Iowa State and I owe a lot to him. The cattle were incredible, the youth were nothing short of amazing and the show management and crew were second to none… 1,739 steers in two and a half days. However, the highlight of Houston is and has always been (Weather you are showing or Judging) the “THE GRAND DRIVE!!!” The selection of the CHAMPION STEER in what years ago was the “ASTRODOME” and is now the “NRG” is an experience that words can’t describe… Over 65,000 SCREAMING FANS…UNREAL!!!

On Sunday, March 15, 14-year-old Dalaney got the opportunity to sort and judge hogs during the 2015 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, an annual event taking place March 3-22. This wasn’t just any opportunity for the Indiana resident - Dalaney is battling cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder without a cure that causes damage to the lungs and digestive system. Her heartfelt wish to be an honorary judge at the show was granted by Make-A-Wish(r) Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. “Our family raises and shows hogs, so we’re very familiar with the industry. The Houston show is the one everyone talks about,” Dalaney’s dad Bret explained. “Dalaney was ecstatic when Make-A-Wish granted her wish. She’s been involved with showing hogs since she was 4 years old and wanted to do something related to her passion. This wish was a great opportunity.” Sunglo Feeds Specialists Brian Hines, Adam Crouch and Nick Mauck have been long-time reps for the family. “All I’ve ever fed our hogs is Sunglo and that’s all I will ever feed,” said Bret. “It’s because of my relationship with Brian, Adam and Nick.” Both Adam and Nick were at the Houston Livestock Show and made it a priority to support Dalaney and her family during her big opportunity.

Adam captured Dalaney (alongside Nick) judging and posted the video to the Sunglo Feeds Facebook page. Since the video was posted on Monday, it already has more than 113,000 views and 1,400 likes!

PUSHING PAST LIMITS
The exhibitor of the Grand Champion Market Steer shares how we should not set limits to our dreams and expectations. BY GAITLIN GOODSON, OK
W
ho would have thought a young man with big dreams and high hopes would be living the American Dream? Hi, I am Gatlin V. Goodson from Shattuck, Oklahoma. My parents are Lance and Tiffany Schultz of Shattuck and Matt and Sara Goodson of Yukon. I have two sisters, Cassidy and Allyn, and a brother, Crew. I am a student at Shattuck Junior High where I am in the 8th grade. I am on the junior high football, basketball, and baseball team. I am a member of the United Methodist Church. I have been part of the Ellis County 4H for the past 3 years when I started showing calves and now am a member of the Shattuck FFA. I strive to make the Principal and Superintendent Honor Roll each year.
OKLAHOMA YOUTH EXPO
Reserve Champion Market Steer Ryan Callahan
I have been blessed with many travels over the past few years. I have been to Kansas City, Phoenix, Denver, Ft. Worth, OKC, Louisville, and Grand Island just to name a few. The Oklahoma Youth Expo is my favorite show because I get to see all my friends from across the state. This year at the 100 year anniversary at OYE, I showed the Reserve Supreme Commercial heifer and the Grand Champion Market Steer. It is such a great and huge honor to not only win the Oklahoma Youth Expo but to win the 100 year anniversary show. The limo ride, the smoke, the fireworks, and the red carpet are all fun but nothing beats that Grand Slap! It still amazes me, sometimes it’s almost like a dream. So many things have to come together and I know lady luck has her share, but the best part was that so many people could feel Jared Bedwell with us in that moment. Jared Bedwell is where I got started and I learned so much in a short period of time.
Bronze Medallion Market Steer Baylor Bonham
I have so many people to thank for pushing me, believing in me, and even setting goals for me that I didn’t even see. I couldn’t begin to take all the credit for my success because with my team, my friends, my family, and my mom pushing me to do more, be better, and strive for things I can’t see yet, I wouldn’t do it without them. I have goals set for myself, but it seems someone always has higher goals for me and pushes me to limits I didn’t know existed, and it’s funny, they are always right. Sometimes when my mom is looking for another calf, (which is all the time) I will say “Mom, don’t you think I have enough?” and her reply is “They will keep you out of trouble and one day you will thank me.” So, I don’t argue, I just keep on keepin’ on…What am I supposed to do? She is the MOM!

ADVERB: ___________________________
Winning the title of Champion Senior Showman at the National Junior Hereford Expo is no easy feat and quite an accomplishment. It takes a lot of work and talent to get there. In 1979, Kevin Jensen received such honors. 34 years later in 2013, at the same age that Kevin was when he won, his son Brady Jensen was selected as the Champion Senior Showman.

GETTING TO KNOW THE FUTURE OF THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY
AUSTIN PORTER was born May 12, 1997. He quickly took interest in the agriculture field as a child which included helping on a family farm, and starting his 4-H career in the 3rd grade. He is currently in his 10th year of 4-H, which he is very active in showing cattle and pigs. He has always enjoyed going to the shows, and spending time learning to fit and help others with their animals. He is also involved in FFA at his school, where he has been active in for the past 4 years. He will be attending Purdue this fall where he plans to get a degree in Ag sales, and has hopes to one day take over the family farm. He enjoys getting his 4-H projects ready and working hard to travel to the open shows as well. He hopes to be able to come home on weekends and help his younger sister as she continues her 4-H career and teach her everything that he has learned from some really great people.

Angus means business. The American Angus Association® is the nation’s largest beef breed organization, serving nearly 25,000 members across the United States, Canada and several other countries. It’s home to an extensive breed registry that grows by nearly 300,000 animals each year. The Association also provides programs and services to farmers, ranchers and others who rely on Angus to produce quality genetics for the beef industry and quality beef for consumers. ANGUS - LEADING THE WAY
ABOUT THE 2015 NJAS
Let the countdown begin for the 2015 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Tulsa, Okla. National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members and their families will travel from coast-to-coast to compete in the year’s most prestigious junior livestock event. From July 13-18, Angus youth will compete, both inside and outside the showring, during the cattle shows, life-skills contests, cooking events and much more. “We are expecting a large crowd during the National Junior Angus Show in Tulsa this summer,” says Jaclyn Upperman, American Angus Association director of events and education. “The central location is a big draw for many families, and the host state is doing a fantastic job organizing what is sure to be another successful event.” Sponsored by the Oklahoma Junior Angus Association, the 2015 NJAS is themed “Angus – Leading the Way.” Activities and events will take place at the Built Ford Tough Complex at Expo Square in Tulsa, Okla., where more than 1,000 head of Angus cattle are expected to compete. Classes include owned heifers, bred-andowned heifers, cow-calf pairs, steers and bred-and-owned bulls. States will join together to compete for the Best Five Head, while individual members will vie for Junior Premier Breeder and the Silver Pitcher Award.

Performance
HISTORIC PHOTO
“1967_Showmanship_Winner” was from the very first National Junior Angus Showmanship Contest held in Lexington, Ky.
The nearly 25,000 members who comprise the American Angus Association came off of an outstanding 2014 fiscal year (FY) last fall. Fiscal performance exceeded all expectations on nearly every front, from an increase in registrations, to record-breaking sales of Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) brand product, to the most sales revenue ever reported for Angus seedstock: $326 million. The organization also reports that these trends have accelerated in the first quarter of FY 2015, which began Oct. 1, 2014, and the breed is on an early pace to potentially exceed last year’s performance.
GENOMIC TECHNOLOGY
Angus cattlemen continue to reap the rewards of genomic technology. In FY 2014, genomic testing increased by 32%, and the fourth recalibration last September was conducted on 57,000 animals, an increase of 47%. That indicated increased emphasis on genomic information that offers increased reliability and predictability for performance testing, parentage verification and genetic defect testing.
BRANDED BEEF
Coming off a banner year that generated sales of more than 882 million pounds of CAB brand product, the Association’s branded beef company continues to perform well in the first quarter, despite lower overall cattle inventories. Likewise, the Angus Foundation reports continued investment from Angus breeders, friends and allied industry as it raises funds for youth, education and research initiatives. Last year, the 501(c)3 entity raised nearly $2.5 million in revenue and distributed more than $254,000 in scholarships.
Champions
Angus Breeds
The National Junior Angus Association believes in the power and promise of Angus youth. Through the NJAA, you can be part of the nation’s leading junior beef breed organization — a program dedicated to developing tomorrow’s Angus youth to become champions.

ABOUT THE CHIANINA BREED
The American Chianina Association was officially organized in June 1972 in Kansas City, MO. The original ACA office was located in Blue Springs, MO, until November 1982, when a permanent ACA National Headquarters was built in Platte City, MO. The primary purpose of the ACA is to register and transfer seedstock and maintain records of pedigrees in the breed's herdbook. The National staff promotes the breed at various livestock events around the country, as well as publishes a breed magazine and other promotional publications as a service to the association's membership.

On Nov. 11, 1978 the first National Junior MaineAnjou Show was held at the American Royal, Kansas City, Mo. The official program was started on Sept. 28, 1980 with 17 members. Today, the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) has over 1,500 members. AJMAA members have the opportunity to be a part of one of the greatest junior associations in the beef industry.
SURVIVOR PERSONALITY
Maine-Anjou cattle are known for their docility.
CUTABILITY
Maine-Anjou’s are one of the highest marbling of the continental breeds.
VARIETY
The original Maine-Anjou cattle were red and white, they now are predominately black but can be a variety of colors.
ABOUT THE MAINE-ANJOU BREED The Maine-Anjou breed originated in the northwestern part of France in the beginning of the 19th century. The breed was first known as the Durham-Mancelle breed but later changed to Maine-Anjou taking the name from the Maine and Anjou river valleys. The first Maine-Anjou imported into North America came to Canada in 1969. These cattle were then introduced to the United States through Artificial Insemination. The Maine-Anjou society, Inc. was incorporated in Nebraska in 1969. In 1976 the name was changed to the American Maine-Anjou Association. The AMAA headquarters has been located in Platte City, Missouri since 2001. The breed excels in performance, disposition and carcass traits.

HEREFORD NATION
PROFITABULL Enough said. There’s no doubt about it, a registered Hereford bull pays in so many ways — a user-friendly package of docility, stronger fertility and calving ease that sires calves with hybrid vigor and feed efficiency that demand a premium. With over 3,500 adult members and over 2,600 junior members the American Hereford Association (AHA) and National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) are two of the largest, strongest and most active cattle programs in the country, there’s no doubt that the Hereford breed is the beef breed supreme. During the last fiscal year, increasing demand continued to be the theme in the Hereford business. Despite drought and escalating costs in the beef industry, Hereford breed demand continues to grow, as production sale and reports of private-treaty sales continue to out-pace the previous year’s reports. A total of 188 Hereford production sales were reported by the AHA field representatives this fiscal year. Bull sales averaged $5,089, up nearly $400, and females, $4,637, up almost $440 per head. During the last fiscal year the AHA registered 71,444 Herefords along with 40,295 transfers and a total of 107,277 cows on inventory. During the 2014 Fiscal Year, Certified Hereford Beef ® (CHB®) experienced another year of growth despite the challenging U.S. economy. The company posted a record year in volume with 50.2 million lb. sold, 362,624 cattle identified, 267,967 carcasses certified and a 74% certification rate. To learn more about CHB’s time-honored tradition visit herefordbeef.org
LEADERSHIP
The National Junior Hereford Association is teaming up with the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association to host our Faces of Leadership Convention in Estes Park, Colorado July 25-28. Join us as we travel up the Rocky Mountains and participate in many awesome leadership and team building activities as well as visiting Colorado State University, visit a few farms and much, much more; visit jrhereford.org to register.
MYHERD.ORG
A real-time online registry data system that provides online access to the majority of AHA record services — was released in September. Utilizing MyHerd, breeders can register and transfer cattle online, and view and pay accounts, as well as keep up-to-date on Whole Herd TPR data entry.

UDDER EPD'S
With the release of the spring 2015 Pan-American Cattle Evaluation, the AHA released two new expected progeny differences for udder quality. The two traits are udder suspension (UDDR) and teat size (TEAT). According to Jack Ward, AHA chief operating officer and director of breed improvement, there were around 200,000 udder observations included in the first evaluation, and the heritability for both UDDR and TEAT is about .34, which makes this trait fairly highly heritable, so genetic progress can be made rather quickly. “The correlation between the two scores and one is .72, so it makes all udder scores useful in this evaluation,” Ward says. “This EPD can be used the same as other EPDs and will allow you to compare animals and, most importantly, has the potential to change udder quality between sire groups.”
JNP15 2014 HERDSMAN OF THE YEAR At the 2014 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) Cody Beck of Bainbridge, Ind., was named the 2014 NJHA Hereford Herdsman of the Year. Cody’s passion, discipline and responsibility are what earned him the respect of his peers. “When I consider the criteria expected of our breed’s Herdsman of the Year, I think of a young person who is dedicated to the breed and in-herd improvement, one who understands genetics and management and one who has the ability to prepare and exhibit cattle in a way that can truly showcase their breeding program. I can’t imagine a young person who defines that image more than Cody Beck” says Chris Mullinex, Cody’s livestock judging coach during his time at Butler Community College. After Oklahoma State, Cody intends on finding a steady job in the cattle industry and continuing to raise and market his own cattle along the way.

ABOUT THE LIMOUSIN BREED
NALF has grown from the original 99 founder members to more than 4,000 active members who register nearly 40,000 head annually. From humble beginnings in France many centuries ago, the Limousin breed has achieved acceptance in the United States as a major contributor to a more efficient beef industry. › Tulsa, Oklahoma › June 28-July 4, 2015
TULSA TIME HERD BOOK ORIGINS
The first Limousin Herd Books were written in 1886. Its entries were chosen with such scrutiny that less than half of all animals applying for registration were actually accepted. The adoption of a herd book, prompted creation of Limousin exclusive cattle shows in France.
DATING BACK TO CAVEMEN
The Limousin breed originated anywhere from 16,000 to 13,000 years ago, proven by cave drawings in the French Lascaux Cave.
EPD FIRST
In 1998, the North American Limousin Foundation created the docility EPD.
ABOUT THE 2015 LIMOUSIN JUNIOR NATIONALS
The Oklahoma Limousin Breeders association will be hosting the Limousin family reunion in Tulsa, Oklahoma June 28-July 4th. This year junior participants can participate in the Sales Talk, Quiz Bowl, Team Fitting, and Livestock Judging Satellite Events. They can also participate in the always popular Tenderfoot/ Mentor Program. New to the schedule this year is Adult Quiz Bowl. Adults can test their knowledge about the cattle industry and other random facts against other adults. It should be quite entertaining.

ABOUT THE 2015 NAJRAE
On June 15th the 10th Annual North American Junior Red Angus Event will kick off in Grand Island, Nebraska. Youth from across the country will participate in events ranging from livestock judging and speech contests to showing of both commercial and registered Red Angus cattle. With the 2014 show posting a 94% growth rate over the previous nine years, this 10th Anniversary show promises to be bigger and better than ever before.
WHEN AND WHERE?
The NAJRAE was established with the idea that it would stay in one location for two years in an effort to create excitement for the Red Angus breed with juniors and their families in that area of the country by building junior membership. The 2015 event will be the second year for the NAJRAE to be held in Grand Island. In 2016, the venue will move to Springfield, IL and be held June 20-25th. For more information visit NAJRAE.com.

TEN YEARS IN A ROW...MORE THAN JUST A SHOW!
In 2004, Dan and Cheryl Johnson of Iowa dreamed of creating a youth event for Junior Red Angus exhibitors during the summer months. They held a fundraiser during that year’s Iowa Beef Expo, soliciting donations from Solutions Genetics, TC Reds, Pieper Red Angus, von Forell Ranch, Nordlund Stock Farm, Coley Cattle Company, Genex, ABS, Accelerated Genetics, Select Sires, Ludvigson Stock Farm, Finch Cattle and U Bar Ranch. The fundraiser netted $4600 to be used for the first NAJRAE. In 2006 the inaugural NAJRAE was held the weekend of June 24-25 in Spencer, Iowa. Seventeen exhibitors with 27 entries converged on Spencer for the event, with activities including Sales Talk, Herdsman Quiz, Public Speaking, Photo Contest, and shows for steer, bred and owned bull and female, and owned female show, at a cost of just $4,124.53. Later that year, Dan and Cheryl along with Dr. Scott Shuey traveled to the National Red Angus Convention to present the benefits of having a national junior show during the summer. While the idea was rejected by the convention, with ample support from breeders and businesses, the NAJRAE has been able to continue offering youth the opportunity to sharpen their skills both in and out of the show ring.

Traveling is an expense, but well worth it. Sometimes, we get to incorporate a vacation too! All of our children love showing. They get to further friendships all across the state and country. They get to further their livestock knowledge which could lead to Ag degrees in their near futures. Whatever God has in store for them, we’re sure livestock showing will play a big part in cultivating their characters. God’s not through with any of them yet, we can’t wait to see what their futures hold. Our children will be different because of their experiences gained through showing. It teaches a daily diligence of hard work. It teaches perseverance. It teaches that hard work can pay off. It teaches faith in God providing our hearts desires and needs. The future is in God’s hands. If we continue to do well, we will give God all the glory. If we don’t achieve the highest honors, we will still give God the glory. With the gifts He has already given us we are more than satisfied and very thankful. With satisfaction sometimes comes laziness. We will not let that happen. We plan to continue showing quality livestock and competing at the highest level. We wish others the same success as us. Best of luck in accomplishing their goals and dreams. ▪
Darin’s parents, Clark & Janell Straka soaking up Garrison’s 2015 National Western win.
CLARK I grew up on a grain farm in central Oklahoma and always had a passion for farming and raising livestock, especially swine. Upon entering high school in 1966, I enrolled in Vocational Agriculture (FFA). I wanted to raise swine as a FFA project. My parents were very supportive, and my Ag Teacher and mentor Mr. Rucker, were very supportive in helping me acquire my first Duroc gilt. My herd grew to 10 Duroc sows during my high school years. Upon graduation from high school, my goal was to go to college and get a teaching degree in agriculture education. This would allow me to continue to help young people interested in agriculture, and I could still be active in the livestock world.
IN 2005 THE STRAKA FAMILY WAS INDUCTED INTO THE OYE SWINE HALL OF FAME FOR ALL OF THEIR HONORS IN THE SWINE INDUSTRY.
DARIN Clark was an Ag teacher all through Darin’s adolescence. Darin started showing at the age of 3. During his show days, he traveled the country showing and learning a great deal about showing quality animals. He only showed swine. He won many Grand Champion honors at jackpots. He achieved Grand Champion at the American Royal in 1989, the NWSS in 1995, Tulsa State Fair in 1986 and 1994 and Reserve Grand at Oklahoma Youth Livestock Show in 1991. He too followed in his dad’s footsteps and started a herd of his own towards the end of high school. While attending college, Darin’s herd grew larger and larger. He decided to raise livestock instead of pursuing a degree in Ag Ed. Darin and Garrison's Grand Champion Hogs at the NWSS exactly 20 years apart.
“OUR CHILDREN WILL BE DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF THEIR EXPERIENCES GAINED THROUGH SHOWING.”
The Straka Family and friends looking on as Garrison, Darin, & Gavin are being interviewed for The Showtimes’ Show Center after Garrison won the National Western Shock Show Hog Show.
RHYLEE Darin and Lauren were married in 1998. Their first child was born in April 1999. Rhylee is their firstborn. She started showing at age 2. Her first jackpot she wore a pink skirt and cowgirl boots. She had Grand Champion at the American Royal in 2009 and Reserve Grand at OYE in 2011 winning a pig box. In 2009, she was the OCPA premier exhibitor and won a stock trailer use for a year. LYDIA Lydia, second born, started showing also at the age of 2. She had Reserve Grand at the NWSS in 2011. After this she decided she enjoyed showing sheep better. She realized there was less pressure because dad knew/knows nothing about sheep! She had Bronze Medallion with a sheep in 2014 at OYE and then Grand Champion with a sheep at OYE in 2015. She has also won her county fair 2 years in a row, 2014 and 2015. GARRISON Garrison has in more ways than one followed in his dad’s footsteps. In 2015, he exhibited the Grand Champion Hog at the National Western – exactly 20 years after Darin won the title. He followed up his big win in Denver with the top honors at the 2015 Oklahoma Youth Expo of showing the Grand Champion Hog there as well. GAVIN While Gavin hasn’t had the same opportunities as the others, in 2014 he had Champion Hamp at the Tulsa State Fair. In 2016, he’ll be receiving the best stock in both the sheep barn and the pig barn. That’s at least what he tells Darin.

WHAT DRIVES ME. BY KYLA COPELAND, NM
hall of fame
to do something bigger and better and want to challenge myself every day. I simply cannot sit still! To understand the work we do at Focus Marketing Group, you will need to understand a little bit about me… I’m a communicator, cattlewoman, businesswoman and an artist. I grew up on a farm in rural Baltic, South Dakota. For a brief period of time (when I was very young) we milked dairy cattle and ran a commercial beef herd. We dispersed the dairy herd and concentrated on the beef herd. My love of cattle started very early. I started exhibiting cattle at a young age and competed at a local, state and national level. A big thank you goes out to my parents who put up with me, supported me and let me go after what I loved. I also owe so much of my knowledge of the cattle world to a wonderful man who took me in at a young age and showed me the ropes. He was my second dad for a big part of my life (and still holds a special place in my heart), Ron Bruns. Without him, I’m not sure what I would be doing at this point in my life for a career. But because of him, I’m doing something I truly love and am passionate about. We had many years on the show road where I learned how to win humbly and lose gracefully. I made so many special memories I will forever cherish. If you are ever around the Baltic, South Dakota area, stop in and see Ron and talk to him, his knowledge is astounding and he is truly a wonderful man.
H
i y’all! I’m Kyla Copeland, owner and business manager of Focus Marketing Group, Inc. “Life is short, don’t be lazy.” - Sophia Amoruso. That is one of my favorite quotes. I’ve always considered myself a busy body, I love to work and keep busy, and I am always pushing myself
I graduated from South Dakota State University in 2003 with a degree in Ag Journalism and a minor in Animal Science. In January 2004, I started working as the director of communications for the American MaineAnjou Association (AMAA) and editor of the MaineAnjou Voice, the AMAA’s publication in Platte City, Mo. (just north of Kansas City). I also helped out with the various shows and events put on by the AMAA. Again, I owe a lot of my personal growth and knowledge to that job and also in my life to John Boddicker (CEO of the AMAA). John is someone else I really look up to, he is so well respected in this business, something we all strive for. I currently live in Nara Visa, N.M. (we are located about

90 miles northwest of Amarillo, Texas; 40 miles southwest of Dalhart, Texas and 40 miles straight south of Clayton, N.M.) with my husband Matt. We live on the family’s ranch - Copeland & Sons LLC - where we run registered Hereford cattle, commercial purebred Herefords and club calf cows. We sit on about 28,000 acres at about 4,500 feet elevation and are 5th generation in the family operation. I also have to take this time to thank Matt for his continued support over the years. The ranch was established in 1943 (then called Jack Copeland and Sons Herefords) by Jack and Mary Alice Copeland and Jack’s parents Otis R. and Belinda Copeland. The ranch was strictly a commercial Hereford operation in the beginning and then diversified into a combination registered and commercial Hereford operation. Although from the beginning ranch cattle were exhibited at shows locally and nationally, the cattle have always been bred for survival under range conditions and to produce all of the performance our severe southwest climate will allow.
champions and reserves. But the biggest accomplishment for us was winning the Premier Horned Hereford Breeder award, something that was truly humbling for us all. Our club calves from our online sales have also gone on to do some great things for all families involved.
“If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.”
I love living on a working ranch where they do things “the cowboy way”. Everything is done on horseback on our ranch. Horses are a secret passion of mine, sometimes I wish I could spend some more time with them. In my downtime, I enjoy getting on a horse and heading out to a pasture to gather cattle or just to go for a ride. Every fall we have a production sale with long time family friends, the Langfords in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The Event is held the third Sunday in October. We offer our very best registered Hereford females and on occasion a few registered Hereford bulls in this sale and the Langford name speaks for itself with their Hereford genetics. We also hold two online club calf sales in October and also sell a few private treaty cattle throughout the year. We travel to most of the major shows throughout the year with our Hereford cattle. Customer service is a theme around here, and we enjoy helping our “families” at shows with the cattle we sell. We have been very fortunate to have done very well with Copeland raised Herefords. This past Denver was one for the books for us! We raised the National Champion Horned Female who was purchased by Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch and McKay Cattle Company, thank you guys for your trust in that female. We also had a few division
After Matt and I got married, life took a few turns and I ended up starting my own company with a great, longtime friend of mine, Kent Jaecke. Focus Marketing Group, Inc. (FMG) came to be in November of 2010 at the Cardinal Hall of Fame Café in Louisville, Kentucky. I will never forget that day. From there it was a leap of faith and a lot of hard work, but this business grew and it grew FAST, furious and big. We began this journey with four dedicated team members. From the start, we made sure to treat people right and offer top-notch customer service. We wanted to be a “one stop shop” for the livestock industry and make the marketing process easier on our customers. Today, we have nine talented FMG crew members who cover sale photography and videography, show photography, web and print design, social media management, creative photography and promotional videography for our customers from coast to

coast. Our motto remains, “Our only FOCUS is you”. Like any job, some days can be challenging, but we still have fun with our customers and each other. Together, we strive to make livestock marketing an enjoyable process for all parties involved. My co-workers are my ROCKS, I couldn’t do this without them and FMG would not be where it is today without them. I cannot thank them enough for their dedication and time they put into this company. Y’all are AWESOME! Historically, picture/video day is stressful for everyone involved and we work hard to make it more enjoyable! If the photographer is a little more laid back and easygoing it creates a more relaxed environment, which allows everyone else to loosen up and even the cattle aren’t as tense… well most of the time… I also would like to take this time to thank all of our FMG customers for the continued support. You have shown
incredible patience and unrelenting faith in our work, as well as allowed us to take risks and try new things. You know who you all are. The customers, friends and acquaintances I’ve made along the way I will forever hold close to my heart. You all make this craziness worth the long hours, late night drives and hard work. The friendships I have made through this all are endless. I’ll end this with another one of my favorite quotes, “Create your own job. Become the master of what you do. Fully immerse yourself in your culture. Be humble. You are never above having to pack boxes. Never forget where you came from. And always be polite. Good old-fashioned manners can get you very far.” - Jenne Lomardo. Life is a crazy adventure, enjoy every minute of it! I’ve been blessed to have a great one so far. ▪

JASON SHARES HIS STORY. BY JASON HOFFMAN, NE
hall of fame
hall of fame / jason hoffman
and his son Jason were successful California cattlemen, but moved their families and the operation to Thedford, Nebraska in 2009 for the abundance of space, natural resources, and business relationships. In the summer of 2013, Hoffman Ranch purchased the fall calving herd in its entirety from Sitz Angus in Montana. Today, Denny and Dixie Hoffman, along with Jason and Kaycee Hoffman, Haxton (4), Kennedy (2), and Hayden (6 months) manage the ranch. Jason's niece, Shayne Myers, has also been instrumental in starting their Angus show heifer program. BULLS Hoffman Ranch holds two annual production sales a year, beginning with their annual bull sale the third Friday in February. The sale consists of 200+ Hereford and Angus bulls, while an additional 80+ bulls are sold by private treaty throughout the year. Hoffman Ranch takes a tremendous amount of pride in producing herd bulls that are fault free, low maintenance and highly functional for the commercial cattlemen, as well as seedstock producers.
H
offman Ranch is a family owned and operated cattle ranch located in the 'heart of cow country' in the Nebraska Sandhills. With over 50 years of experience, Hoffman Ranch is a nationally recognized breeding program with proven genetics that build quality cattle for the progressive commercial cowman. Denny Hoffman
The Hoffman breeding program utilizes the best proven genetics in both the Angus and Hereford breeds, but they are also willing to take risks in the right circumstances. The yearling bull, FULL THROTTLE, was used aggressively this past year through embryo transfer and AI, and from the looks of his calves, it was a successful risk to take. This year, the Hoffman's plan to aggressively use HH ADVANCE 4075, a yearling bull bought in Holden's sale for $240,000. This bull is the real deal - proven genetics, great cow family, coupled with the fact that he is an outlier of an individual. Top producers in the Hereford breed were bidding on him. FEMALES The other annual production sale at the Hoffman Ranch is their Angus and Hereford female sale, held at the end of September. Over 200 females are sold every year, including show heifers, replacement heifers, bred heifers, bred cows, and donor cows, with most going through the sale. In
PHOTO LEGACY LIVESTOCK IMAGING
hall of fame / jason hoffman 2013 and 2014, Hoffman Ranch broke breed records for the highest selling Hereford females. Most of the heifers sold in their annual sale make their way to the show ring and have performed with spectacular success. In the past nine years, the Hoffman's have had nine Grand or Reserve Grand Champions at the Hereford Junior Nationals. Many of these heifers have gone on to raise National Champions as well. Even though they offer several high dollar females, the Hoffman's feel that there are prospects available for any budget. Hoffman Ranch places a vast amount of importance on the females in their breeding program. Maternal abilities are a big part of selection criteria throughout the program. They breed females that are recognized for their stoutness without losing femininity. Hoffman Ranch is actively involved with the National Cattlemens Beef Association, Nebraska Cattlemen, Sandhills Cattle Association, American Hereford Association, and American Angus Association. Denny Hoffman is also a past board member of the AHA. FUTURE Looking towards the future, the Hoffman's would like to grow in real estate and cattle, especially with their prime location and connections throughout the industry. Hoffman Ranch is committed to their customers, both commercial and seedstock, to provide the best possible genetics and service. They have also been making strides in staying very involved in the marketing of the cattle that come from their program, which is how HerefordInfluence.com came to be. Hereford Influence is a site where Hereford-sired calves can be listed and found for private sale to cattle feeders. In addition, the site will assist breeders and feeders in locating Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) contacts. This marketing avenue is free of charge and the Hoffman's plan on making it a “go toâ€? place for perspective buyers across the country. â–Ş

WE ASKED JAMES TO FILL IN THE BLANKS. BY JAMES SULLIVAN, IA
1. I can’t live without... One thing I can’t live without is music. I have to have music playing all the time whether it’s the barn, my truck, my house or my office. 2. My favorite show is... NAILE in Louisville, KY is hands down my favorite show, nothing like walking down the ramp and seeing those green shavings. 3. I would never... I would never have a pet tarantula. Spiders are not my thing. 4. If I could meet one person it would be... I was going to come up with someone like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates but let’s be honest; it would be Nicki Minaj so I could ask her to marry me. 5. My biggest fear is... being buried alive/ tight spaces. I might be one of the most Claustrophobic people ever. It would be worse if I was buried alive with a bunch of spiders.
6. My favorite color is... All shades of blue. 7. My job at S/S is... My job at Sullivan Supply Inc. is New Product Development. I am involved with the production of our products from start to finish. 8. If I could be anyone for a day it would be... Superman, I know he isn’t real but one can dream. 9. My favorite song is... Shorthorn Association board of directors , graduating college and of course becoming a member of The Showtimes Hall of Fame. 13. I always make sure I... I always make sure I use common sense, this is one thing my grandpa taught me before he passed away that has always stuck with me. 14. I like it when... I like it when I see people make the most out of their livestock projects, I’m disappointed going to a show and seeing a good animal only about 70 – 80% ready. 15. I would never go to a show without... I always go to shows with two sets of headphones and phone chargers. These items are like gum, as soon as people see it, they try and take it. FAITH FAMILY AND FARMING PASTOR RANDY DAVIS TALKS ABOUT FAITH, FAMILY AND FARMING. BY PASTOR RANDY DAVIS, LIMA, OH
HOW WE MET RANDY We met Randy Davis when we visited Lima, Ohio for Maine Junior Nationals back in 2012. He is the Winegardner family's pastor. They had asked him to give a sermon during the show. We were greatly impressed with Randy. Since then, we have listened to his sermons in our office from time to time. When Brad Winegardner came out to Colorado to judge our show we visited about having Randy write a message for our upcoming issue. We hope you enjoy his message!
N
ow there are three things that are very important. As I imagine the audience that I am writing to today, I can only imagine the amount of hard work that each of you are doing to make your summer of competition a success. Only you know the amount of hard work and sacrifice that has been made for every animal entered and every event completed. The hardest part is what if the hard work just doesn’t pay off? What if we don’t win? What if we don’t get the return on our investment that we need? Farming has to be one of the biggest faith operations that there is. Let’s face it, you work so hard and do so much with so many intangibles surrounding your results. For those with crops: You need good weather to prepare the ground. Good ground for the seed to go into. Good weather for planting. Enough rain for growth and yet not too much that you cannot get the crop
off the fields. We need sunshine but not too much. Then we need a great harvest but not so great that it drives the prices down. Seriously, are you farmers crazy or do you just like the adrenaline rush of stress? Then for those of you with animals, especially show animals. There is another whole level of stress. Seriously, you have to get the calf to grow into the right size and shape. Has to get big but in the right areas. We need it tame and able to walk in a show ring and pay attention. Yet we need it strong and able to look better than the competition. Are we talking about cows here? Seriously from the outside looking in, this is all crazy. Fixing a heifers hair to be in a show is one of the craziest things I have ever heard of, and yet, I get it. You see it isn’t just about animals and competition. It is about family and teaching our kids a work ethic. It is teaching them how to take care of something and making them a better person for the experience of farming and showing. It is about sowing and reaping. It is about doing the right thing. It is about keeping our kids involved in something that is good for them and keeps them out of trouble. It is about passing on what was passed to us. It is so much bigger than a show. One of my favorite scriptures is Galatians 6:7-9 In verse 7 it says, Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The hardest part of this scripture is to recognize that we don’t always reap the way we thought. If we put in the hours and raise the right animal the right way and yet come up short, that is not what we wanted to reap. “There is more to reaping than winning!” In every hard working family there are the intangible results that you will not always see at fair time. The thing about reaping a harvest is this: You will reap later than you sow. You will reap more than you sow. But, you will reap what you sow. The chapter goes on to say in verses 8 and 9; 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. So ask yourself today, what am I sowing? Are you sowing to only please your sinful nature that has this intense drive to win? You may not get what you wanted. Are you sowing to please the spirit of your faith and realize that all the results of what you are sowing are not always as tangible as
winning the show or having the biggest harvest? It takes a lot of faith to be a farmer. But the result of that faith can be so much bigger than anything we ever thought of or imagined. The hardest part is to continue to sow the right seeds in the right soil at the right time and never give up on doing the right things. The harvest may look different than you planned, but if you continue to sow the right seeds, for the right reasons, you will reap a harvest in your family! And in your sacrifice of hard work, don’t lose sight of your faith in God in all of this. Keep Him first and the harvest will be way more than you expected. Matthew 6:25-33 would be a great passage to read to help with all of the anxiety and worry of showing and farming this year. Remember, you will reap a harvest, if you do not give up! Now go out and give this summer of showing your very best effort and keep the right attitude no matter what and the dividends will be out of this world. ▪

PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS:
DILIGENCE PERSISTENTLY GIVING MY BEST EFFORT TO COMPLETE A TASK.
HOW WILL BEING DILIGENT BENEFIT MY TIME SHOWING LIVESTOCK? The natural tendency for many people is to avoid diligence because it implies work. However, without putting in the necessary time and effort into your livestock projects, your end results will be far less rewarding. There are many benefits to being diligent. Among others, it can help you improve each time you step in the ring, allow younger showmen to look up to you as a role model and give you a sense of pride in all you accomplish with your project.
In the April/May issue of Showtimes, you read about Paul Weaver and his commitment to leadership and the value he places on developing the leaders of tomorrow. Weaver Leather Livestock is proud to present the series “Principles for Success: Lodestar Guidance” to livestock showmen everywhere. Throughout this series, you will learn about various principles, what they mean and how to apply them to showing your livestock animals. Ready to get started? In this issue, let’s focus on
DILIGENCE.
OTHER WORDS FOR DILIGENCE
If you are a diligent person, your mind is decisive, your actions are intentional and a job well done is your highest priority.
THE OPPOSITE OF DILIGENCE
Neglect, laziness and carelessness are the opposite of diligence and when practiced will be roadblocks to your success.
how DO YOU demonstrate DILIGENCE with YOUR livestock animals
SO WHAT EXACTLY IS DILIGENCE ANYWAY? Diligence means always giving your best effort to complete a task. When you practice diligence, you spend your time and effort in a willing, consistent manner to successfully set and accomplish your goals as you see your project through in its entirety. Selecting your animal is just the beginning of a project that will have many ups and downs. First comes halter breaking your calf and learning about the proper nutrition. Then comes the daily care… rinsing or washing, conditioning, blowing…repeat. Let’s not forget about working with your calf every day, teaching it to lead and set its feet properly and more…all while honing your own showmanship skills. It all seems like so much work, right? If you commit to being diligent, you can achieve your goals. Do you want to learn how to clip your calf better? Place first in your breed class at the State Fair? Win champion steer? Simply place higher than you did last year? Whatever your goals may be, every time you learn something and face things head on, you are successful. On the path to this success, however, it’s easy to experience some common pitfalls to diligence.
We want to know! Visit Weaver Leather Livestock at facebook.com/thewinnersbrand and look for Principles for Success on our Timeline or in the apps. Click on the link and tell us the way or ways you show DILIGENCE when it comes to your cattle, sheep, goat or pig projects. By participating, you will be entered in a random drawing for a Weaver Leather Livestock prize package! The random prize package winner and his/her DILIGENCE example will also be featured in the next issue of Showtimes Magazine. So, be sure to look for the PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS feature in each issue of Showtimes Magazine to learn about a new Lodestar Guidance Principle, what people are saying about it and, most importantly, for the opportunity to inspire, and be inspired, by your fellow showmen! After all, winning isn’t just about the banner, it’s how you get there.

COMMON ENEMIES OF DILIGENCE:
HOW DO I AVOID THESE PITFALLS?
Distraction. As a young person growing up in the livestock world, there are lots of distractions that can pull attention away from your project. Sports, homework, school dances, summer activities…the list goes on. It is important to learn how to prioritize and balance all of these things that are important to you so you can still find time to focus on your animals, too.
Mind. To succeed in your goals, you must think ahead and choose the right actions that will produce the desired results. You must make a deliberate and intelligent choice. What are the steps I need to take to train my calf to lead? How often do I need to do these?
Procrastination. Once school is out for the summer, it’s easy to say, “I can’t wait to sleep in” or “I want to catch up on my favorite TV shows.” When you do this, you are losing valuable time with your calf – time that can make or break how well you do at your next show. As the saying goes, why put off until tomorrow what you can do today? Have you ever seen someone who waits until a month or two before the show to work with his or her calf? How well does that person typically do at the show? Comfort. The choices that make life easier and more comfortable tomorrow generally require choosing a bit of discomfort today. When raising livestock, there may be some things you like doing more than others. But when you are diligent and challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone, you open yourself up to new opportunities. Consider this quote, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.” When you get comfortable, you don’t challenge yourself to become better. With your calf, try something new…a new technique, a new product, a new feed. Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn’t. At least you were diligent about expanding your knowledge.
Motives. Diligence can also be called “joyful persistence”. It requires your heart to willingly choose to complete the task for its own satisfaction. If you don’t have the heart to put in the hours upon hours of necessary work, it will be hard to find joy in showing your calf. Actions. With your calf or other livestock projects, being diligent means hard work, long work, determined work and, ultimately, rewarding work. Sure, the daily hair care routine on your calf can seem tedious. However, if you are committed to whatever it takes for as long as it takes to complete the process each day, you can reap the benefits of your hard work.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN:
ASSESS YOURSELF: AM I DILIGENT?
Do you consider yourself a diligent person? Are there ways you can improve on this principle? Consider the following questions then take a moment to rate yourself.
Evaluate yourself from 1-5 (1 being least diligent and 5 being most diligent)
1. With my animals, when has it been difficult for me to be diligent? What is my biggest enemy to practicing diligence? 2. Is it harder for me to start a task or to finish it? What can I do about that? 3. How can I encourage diligence among my fellow showmen since it involves their own heads (personal choice), hearts (willing choice) and hands (hard, consistent effort)?
I think ahead and willingly choose the actions that will product the results I want with my animal.

ow that you are reading our May/June issue, it's time to start working on the biggest issue of the year! We invite you to advertise in our upcoming July/ August 2015 State Fair Edition of The Showtimes Magazine! This is the issue that will be distributed to State Fairs across the country this summer. The advantage of advertising in The Showtimes is that we distribute pallets of magazines to the different shows. In fact, we distributed over an entire pallet during the market steer show at the Illinois State Fair last year alone. A full page color is only $550. Plus, if your sale group advertises, it drops the rate to $475 per full page color. The advertising deadline is July 7th. You can reserve your ad in the State Fair Edition by emailing us at theshowtimes@yahoo.com. Don't miss your opportunity to be part of the biggest issue of the year!
