65 days is the number of opportunities you are given in a year to do something great... to make a difference... to leave a mark. The Year End Edition of The Showtimes is always fun for us to put together as it captures all of the memorable champions, exhibitors and happenings of this past year.

VOTED BEST LIVESTOCK SHOW PUBLICATION BEST OF THE BARNS

2015 was the best year yet for The Showtimes! From covering numerous shows across the country and hosting the Blackout Jackpot 3, to designing backdrops, animal cutout signs and partnering with multiple Jr. National shows, we never seemed to have a dull moment. Without question, the most rewarding aspect of our year and company was being able to be an active part of our industry. We are constantly thinking of new ways for us to infiltrate and cover the livestock world. While reading this issue, do not miss the Year Book special feature on page 185. No where else will you find all of

the champion heifers and steers from this past year in the same place. The end of the year is also a time to prepare for what is coming next. New calves... new shows... new opportunities. Be sure to look through all of the advertisements and articles we’ve compiled to help you make the most of 2016. Because tomorrow’s success is started today. Over the years, The Showtimes Hall of Fame has been filled with top notch individuals from the livestock industry. Our two new inductees are no different. Be sure to read this very special feature on page 37. The best part of our job is getting to meet and know others with our same passion. If you see us at a show, be sure to stop and say hello. Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2016!

he first time I “really” met John Griswold is one I will never forget. He pulled up to REI (Reproductive Enterprise Incorporated) in Stillwater, Oklahoma in a beat up old tan Buick. He had on a Hawaiian shirt, an old baseball cap and a few days stubble on his face. John had just driven all night from South Dakota and hadn’t been home to shower or sleep. After we looked through the bulls at REI, John took us to his car to go look at cattle. John had to bang hard on the passenger door to get it to open and let my dad in and then get inside and reach over across the back seat to open the back door from the inside for me. He spent all day showing us cattle. One thing that hit me is how John wasn’t in to keeping up appearances (He still drives that car). Dad and I were headed to Kirk Duff ’s and John asked me to text him if I saw anything that

I thought he needed to own. That was John’s way of getting my phone number. From there it started a friendship that turned into more. In November, John laid over in Utah after a trip to Montana to look at Dad’s sale cattle. John called me from the airport to see if someone could please come and get him, because his drivers license was expired and that he couldn’t rent a car. Beaver and Salt Lake are 250 miles apart. I showed up to pick him up with my boyfriend. John has said that whatever chance he thought he had, at that point certainly was gone. I had no intentions of romance with John Griswold but God saw it differently. Before John left he asked if he could buy me a steak in Denver in 5 weeks at the Denver Stock Show. There was still no intentions of romance, I just really enjoyed talking to him. John flew home before our sale but called after to see how it had gone. I grew up hearing the name John Griswold. My dad thought the world

of him. John had gone to Denver with Kal Herring to help him with his feeder steers and Dad (Gib Yardley) and Kal had pens next to one another. That was before dad was married and I was yet to be a twinkle in his eye. Dad and John stayed good friends through the years and Denver was always a place to rekindle old friendships. Dad got married when he was 47 and started having a family. He once told John the best thing he had done was having kids and that he needed to settle down and find a wife. Little did Dad know what would transpire from those seeds he planted. John has told me several times that Denver was when he would sit down and reflect on his life. Each year he came to the conclusion, “I’m still doing okay, I’m not as old as Gib was when he got married.” John ended up taking me for a for a steak dinner in Denver, I felt like I had known him my whole life. It was in Denver that Dad’s words came full circle. A year later John and I took our honeymoon to Denver. John grew up in Livingston, Wisconsin. He was the oldest of six. His dad, Joe Griswold, set the example and standard for John that would take him through his life. From the time they were young, he and his brother Greg had to do chores every morning before school. He tells our kids the story often of going out and having the tractor tires being frozen. About the thud they made going around, the sound of the snow crunching as he walked out, the burn in his lungs because of the cold. His dad never referred to them as boys, but rather he called them “men.” John is still an early riser and he loves to work. John wrote in our sale letter the following, “Our parents, Joe and Elaine, brought our family to Oklahoma in the early eighties. At first they questioned if they had made the right choice. I could kiss them everyday for that decision. It

was a move that forever shaped our lives and our story.” Those next few years brought a lot of change for the Griswold family. They dropped John off at college the same time as the move from Wisconsin to Oklahoma. John attended Joe’s Alma Mater, Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. John said, “Dad always told us, ‘When you go to college, it’s who you meet that’s important.’ And that has played out in our lives and operation just like he said it would.” The people he met while in college are still some of his closest friends and business associates.

This is a philosophy that has carried John throughout his life; he surrounds himself with good people. Mike Willham was supposed to clip Denver feeder steers for Kal Herring. Mike had taken a full time job and couldn’t do it. He called Kal and suggested John. Kal said, “I don’t know.” Kal

When his dad dropped him off at school he gave him $300. He said it was more money than he had ever dreamed of. He kept it in his glove compartment and it lasted him all semester. He would load his clothes in a suitcase and take them down to the laundry mat. He will be the first to tell you he was green. It was while in college that he started to trade on steers and where he found his start in the industry.

wondered if he would be good enough and almost hired Bobby Smith. When Bobby couldn’t go out, Kal got John. With that, a 20-year-old boy from Wisconsin headed to Wyoming and became lifelong friends with Kal Herring. John remembered Kal heading to town every afternoon with two head and washing those because there was no heat out at the ranch. The next day, John would clip the two that had been washed the day before outside. This was in Encampment, Wyoming in January. “I helped the Loomis family with their steer selection and clipping and they had a real successful run. Then I worked for Kal Herring in Denver, the year they had the champion and reserve champion pen of feeder steers. Those two associations really stand out to me, as I look back on how things evolved,” recalls John. John would go on to buy steers from Kal and trade on them back in Stillwater. One year Joe rode out to pick up a goose neck load of steers and John told his dad, “If I can make $5,000 I would be tickled pink.” He made it. To this day John will attribute his start to Kal Herring. From Kal’s he went on to clip for Hilbert’s. John says that if you clipped for Hilbert’s, you could clip.

“Stierwalt, Bobby May, everybody that ever clipped back in the day clipped for Hilbert,” he says. John will be the first to tell you he was scared to death to take on that job. Time marched on and the hard work and cow savvy of Joe Griswold started to pay off in John’s life. “Dad had a dispersal sale in the early eighties and Todd Thrasher went and bought the 25 best cows that Dad had in the sale. We sat next to him and told him which cows were the producers and which cows to buy,” John said. Another deal came up for Thrasher that allowed John to buy back 17 head. Those females would stand as a foundation for our Griswold cow base. 066 was one of those cows. She proved invaluable to putting the new generation of Griswold Brothers on the map. She is the grandam of Chill Factor and there are over 50 direct granddaughters of this history making matriarch. Her influence is still heavily seen in many top sellers at Griswold Cattle. “If they have 066 in the pedigree, they’re good,” says Greg Griswold. Over a span of 17 years, Chill Factor is still a go-to maternal sire.

Through the 90’s, John and his brothers scoured the Nation and Canada for good cattle. One of John’s best friends is Merle Morris from Montana. He recalls buying 10 head of heifers for $475 a heifer from him; that will tell you how much times have changed. About that time, John traded on a lot of cows and steers, covered a lot of country and made a lot of lifelong friends. One year he brought seven loads out of Canada. Some of those cows went to Fred DeRouchey. They had the Tykia prefix we all became so familiar with. He also spent a lot of time clipping for Stray Creek Brangus with Jeff Boddiker, Mike Dethridge, and Danny May. Some of John’s favorite people and favorite stories come from those days. In 2001, John and his brothers began marketing cattle through Christy Collins Exposure Sale. A move that really elevated their program. 2001 was also the year that Griswold Brothers acquired the Birkeland cowherd. When we had our dispersal sale, John wrote the following in his letter to our customers. “I want to start this letter by thanking Ken

It was right around this same time in 2002 that a major game changer came into play. The Exposure sale would market one of the most influential bulls to ever hit the industry. They sold half-interest in a three-quarter Maine bull that Todd Thrasher and

It was unbearable dry the first year and we sold off and culled a lot of those. When we branded there was 4 to 5 inches of dust in the pens. We farmer flopped all of those calves, my brother David and Tyson Vantrese were there and threw most of those calves. The only thing that was white on them was their eyes and their teeth, everything else was completely black.”

Birkeland. Ken has been in charge of this herd of cows since we bought them in 2001. This cow base has been intact since Ken’s father Cliff traded some Hereford’s for a set of Angus cows from Clayton Jennings, of Highmore, SD back in the 50’s. They started AI’ing in the early 70’s and held several bull sales. I went there for a lot of years, and of all the places I went, I thought the Birkland herd was the best herd of cows I knew about. In the spring of ‘01 I called Gary and asked him how cheap those cows were in Faith (South Dakota), because we were buying and trading on cows. About three or four weeks later, Gary called and said ‘I might sell our cow herd.’ I told my dad and he said you better leave right now. I hurried and took a shower, grabbed a change of clothes, and left for South Dakota. I called Ed Burke and told him about the deal and Ed stayed there for four days with me. He stayed there and helped get them bought. Ed told me there are two are three deals that come along in a person’s lifetime that defines your life; and we both knew that this one was mine. In 2001, we bought 1309 pairs and 365 yearling heifers. All of those cattle originated from those original 70 head - they had never bought a heifer calf.

“Irish Whiskey gave a new look to Maine cattle. He didn’t just make them good, he made them great. The first year we bred Whiskey to the Birkeland cows we used him on the ‘absolute s#?!’ and the following fall all the best calves were Whiskey’s. His first calf crop started the Whiskey craze nationwide. The next year we bred everything to him,” said John.

One of my favorite stories John tells took place around 2002. It characterizes John’s personality of seeing talent greater than his own. John and Greg had bred a couple cows to Double Vision and Greg got one of his college buddies Bruce West to come down and clip those heifers. John said, “I walked into that clipping room after he’d been clipping and couldn’t believe anyone could clip liked that. She looked unbelievable. He just knew what he was doing. From that day forward Bruce was the main clipper. I knew I didn’t know near as much about clipping as he did. I’d always been in there clipping but after I saw him I knew I couldn’t clip like that.” It was while Bruce was clipping at the barn that a young talent named Nick Riemann came to OSU for college and worked out at the barn. They all created friendships that will last the test of time. John was like a proud parent over the success that Nick found after college. Losing Nick was and is one of the hardest things I have ever seen John deal with. Nick was a dreamer, a doer, a believer. In 2005, Griswold Cattle reached another milestone when they purchased 500 cows from Tim Ohlde. John recalls, “I stopped to buy semen from Tim on my way to Dupree. I ended up spending the whole day helping him haul pairs and looking at some great Angus cattle. During the day, he told me the cows were for sale. My brothers and I saw this as a real

opportunity. It didn’t take long for us to arrange to buy the OCC females.” John’s brother Greg’s true love is good Angus cattle. He knows them like the back of his hand, and can tell you how a cow is bred generations back without ever seeing an ear tag or a freeze brand. From that day on, Greg handled all the registered Angus cattle and a pretty intensive ET program. Those females would prove pivotal to the success of making percentage cattle with a good solid Angus base. One thing always leads to another and the acquisition of the OCC cow base led to the Grass to Grid bull sale held with Jeff Bourquin in Follett, Texas. When John’s phone rings and he says “Hello Jeffery” and you hear Jeff ’s deep belly laugh you can’t help but smile. If you know Jeff, you know what I mean. John and him talk often about everything from the market to the happenings of the cow world. Jeff buys thousands of feeder cattle and calves every year. When a sale first got talked about, Jeff needed quality bulls for his customers and he liked the type of cattle that we were raising. After a lot of talking, John and him struck a deal to hold the sale in Follett. We will market 200 head of bulls this spring. In 2008 John went with Greg Burden to go see a Simmental bull, SVF Steel Force. They bought that bull with Ratcliff Farms of Vinita, Oklahoma. This would be the beginning of one of the most dominant sires the Simmental breed had seen. Steel Force progeny have won every major show across the nation and demanded top dollar in both progeny and semen sales. He is still a major force to be reckoned with and a major part of the Griswold story. He’s buried up under a tree at the show barn. He deserved to stay at the place, he more than earned it. Another opportunity arose in 2010 when Griswold Cattle had the

chance to form a partnership with Kim Klotz of Seward, Nebraska. Klotz has tremendous knowledge of pricing, hedging and corn prices as well as oversees the financial end of the company. More than that, he’s a good friend and huge support to our program. John rolls most of his business decisions through two people, his dad and Kim Klotz. In 2013, we made the decision to sell the South Dakota cows. I still to this day don’t know if I have ever seen a prettier set of cows. John took a lot of pride in them; he and his brothers along with Ken Birkeland and a great crew had spent years developing them. South Dakota and Ken held more memories and heart strings for John than any one place or person. He sent me a text once that read, “I was born Wisconsin, we live in Oklahoma, you’ll bury me in Utah, but my heart will always be in South Dakota.” He wrote in our sale catalog that year, “Ken has been the best friend and is almost a idol to me and most of the people that have gone to South Dakota to help. He knows more about cattle than any man I have ever known. Ken, I want you to know that leaving you in South Dakota this fall was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.” John loves cows, more than any person I have ever known. He has irons in more fires than most people ever dream of. His mind works a million miles an hour, twenty-four hours a day and he’s always looking for the “next great one” in both cattle and opportunity. We ranch in Stillwater and this past year had a great opportunity to lease a ranch in Poteau, Oklahoma from our partner Kim Klotz. I drug my feet pretty hard on the Poteau deal. We had just sold all the South Dakota cows to tone down our program; the last thing I wanted was more cows. John has vision and I trust him, so we took the plunge. We love Poteau. We spend

a lot of time on the road back and forth. It’s just a lot shorter drive for us to make from Stillwater, Oklahoma to Poteau than it is to Dupree, South Dakota. It’s a new challenge, and John loves that part of it.

John has said, “There are several things that I can attribute to our success. I would say the number one

43 THE SHOWTIMES

More than anything that John has accomplished, he’s most proud of his Maggie and Garrett. He takes them everywhere. Garrett wakes up in the morning and the first thing he says is “Dadda” and “moo.” John takes being a dad as his most important job; he’s dang good at it. We’ve seen a lot of miles together and even more cattle. He’s packed our kids to producer meetings, stock shows, and cattle sales across the Nation. He waited a long time to start a family and he truly values them.

NOV/DEC 2015

John doesn’t know I wrote this. I’m sure I’ve left out plenty of people that have shaped and influenced him. John believes in people. He believes in their ability to achieve and make decisions and he puts a lot of faith in them. Our crew we have now is second to none. They do a great job. We were in the hospital in Boston with our little boy for about two months this summer. John never left his side except to sleep at night. His ability to do that is because of the people we have in place at home and with the cattle. He told me he never had to worry that things weren’t being taken care of. We run a decent sized outfit, so that is a huge statement. When we finally got to come home he went and scoped things out. That night he told me, “You ought to see it. Everything is just like it should be.” Fence had been built, the cattle had been worked, and the hay had been taken care of. They are our employees, but more than that they are part of our success, they are our friends, our family.

thing is persistence and hard work. I’ve seen a lot of people with way more talent than I have that went by the wayside, because they didn’t have the persistence to see their vision through. My favorite saying is, ‘It’s not what happens to you in life, It’s what you do with it when it does.’ This means that no matter if it’s good or bad, keep your feet on the ground and keep going. A certain amount of luck was involved as we were in the right place at the right time to find great cattle. Ed Burke told me, ‘There will be two or three big deals in your life that will determine where your life ends up. Whether you do them or you don’t.’ Those few events have been pivotal to our success. Our parents instilled

in us responsibility and work ethic. People are the key to success—just like dad told us. The folks we have met, who we have done business with and the many, many friends and customers we have are responsible for our achievements. Our employees and those that are associated with our program have been and will continue to be vital to our accomplishments.” I love you Johnny. I hope this reads all right for you. There are two men I think hung the moon: one is my dad and the other is you. I couldn’t think of anyone I would rather go through this crazy adventure with. Thanks for finding me love; it’s been a heck of ride! ▪

BY JOHN GRISWOLD, OK

I’m not sure how she does the balancing act of mom, wife and cattle, but I can tell you she’s awesome at all of it. Our kids love her so much it’s amazing. Garrett was really sick this summer and they way he looked at Jeannie when they laid in that hospital bed and said “maama” was endearing. Maggie won’t let her out of her sight and mom is the light of her life. I can tell you she’s an amazing wife! She puts her family before herself and she wants her family to be happy and healthy. Jeannie is a very strong person of faith and she keeps me and the kids on the straight and narrow! I love her more than I could ever say in words. She changed my life and I’m very proud to call her my wife! Jeannie and the kids go with me all the time and I’m pretty sure our kids won’t know about anything other than cattle, because in this house we live and breath cattle. ▪

JEANNIE

Jeannie does all the advertising for Yardley Cattle and Griswold Cattle. She does a lot on the catalogs for both outfits also, which is a huge job. Her knowledge of cattle is amazing. She knows about pulling calves, breeding cows, etc. But her opinion on the type of cattle she likes is what I really love about her. She knows what she likes and she won’t waver as fads and different EPDs and numbers come and go. She wants good looking, easy doing cattle that will grow. She thinks you can tell way more about cattle by just looking and studying them instead of making all your selection on numbers.

Dad I didn’t marry until later in life. Jeannie was my first born child and was born on my birthday. She was the greatest birthday present that I ever had or will ever have. I didn’t think I could ever love anyone as much as I loved Jeannie and my children.

As soon as she was old enough I took her with me everyplace. She grew up loving the same things that I liked, our horses, our cattle, our ranches and land, the mountains where we summer and the desert winter range, where we winter our cows without feeding hay. This is at 5,000 ft. elevation. We live on the Western side of the majestic Rocky Mountains, and our cattle summer near the top at 9 to 10,000 ft. high in some of the most beautiful country on earth. We truck our cattle from our winter range to our summer ranch we own and irrigate, 75 miles southeast of Beaver. Then we have to trail these cows horseback 25 miles in 2 days. We were shorthanded several years ago and Jeannie and 3 of her younger sisters trailed these 200 pair by themselves and never lost a calf. Jeannie was very active in FFA in high school and was always an officer. She always went and enjoyed the National FFA convention. She started showing Market steers in 4-H when she was 9. I felt very bad that she never had a Grand Champion because no one worked harder with their show steers than she did. I told my kids that they had to learn to lose as well as win. Jeannie always won the fitting and showing contest at every show she ever went to. We always fed our own steers and I would let her have 1st choice but, inevitably her siblings would beat hers. She did very well in judging contests in high school. After high school graduation she went to Brigham Young

University of Idaho in Rexburg where she majored in Animal Science and AG Business. She came back and worked with us on the ranch until she married John. She and her sisters are the best first calf heifer nurse maids in the country. All her life and the lives of my other children I have taught them what I liked about cattle and horses and they learned their lessons well. Jeannie was asked to judge some of the biggest State Fairs and National Stock Shows. I showed cattle for 35 years in Denver and I went there for 66 years. I always took Jeannie and her siblings with me. For many, many years I showed pens of 5 feeder calves, at the major shows of America. I took the first pen of 5 heifers ever shown in Denver and it has grown into a big part of the show. I always penned next to my good friend Kal Herring of Encampment, WY in Denver. About 25 years ago he brought a young college student from Oklahoma State University to help him fit his calves. That was where I met John Griswold from Wisconsin and we have been lasting friends ever since. I’d seen his family’s cattle in Denver before because they always showed Angus and had the Grand Champion Angus bull, Gold Spur 8,000,000. John came out to our place to look at some Simmental heifers and met Jeannie. They started going together, fell in love and soon got married. They have had a wonderful marriage and happy life together. Those 2 really complement each other. They now have 2 adorable children, Maggie 3, and Garrett 2. Garrett had a very rare health condition and was in the hospital for 40 days, 30 days of which was in the top children’s hospital in the country., He has now recovered and is doing fine. It was really scary and touch and go for a while. Jeannie is very talented in so many ways. For years she has designed our Bull and Cow Sale catalogs. This something that takes hundreds of hours. Jeannie puts her heart and soul into doing this to make it as beautiful as possible. We get compliments and letters from all over the U.S. that it is the nicest catalog they have ever seen. I am as close to Jeannie and my other kids as a father could ever be. With cell phones we talk to each other every day and we always tell each other that “We love them” I love you Jeannie. Love, Dad Mom When Jeannie was just a few weeks old, her dad said “I didn’t know I could ever love anything this much.” With that began a special relationship between Jeannie and Gib. They have been really close from the start and shared a

love and intense interest in cattle. Her Grandpa, Wallace Yardley, was at an age where he’d slowed down a lot and nearly every day he’d come to rock her. As she got a little older he’d bring “Star Burst” candies for the kids and she would hold his hand and go with him and Gib to check the desert range. She has special memories of him.

Most of all I’m proud of Jeannie for what a sweet mother and wife she is, and that her family comes first. The love and care she’s had for animals has helped her to be patient and enjoy her children, and put her family’s needs before her own. She is a choice daughter and has brought me much joy.

When she was 9 years old Gib was sure she could show a steer at the County Stock Show. It looked so big next to her, but she was fearless and determined. From that time on she showed every year and loved it. She and all of our children, made some choice friends at the stock shows. It was a friendly rivalry . One boy she competed with beat her at showmanship for several years, When she finally beat him she was so excited she cheered right in the show ring. He was such a good sport and congratulated her. From then on it was a fierce and friendly competition between them. It helped her work hard to be successful and to be happy for others successes. At one stock show her steer stepped on her big toe and tore the toenail off, another time when she was clipping she got kicked in the mouth and had to have her lip stitched up. She still stayed with it, took pride in clipping her steers just right and helping and learning from others. When Jeannie was 14 years old, Gib had an accident that left him in the hospital for a couple of months. Jeannie and her younger brother Steven took over on their own the responsibility of calving out the heifers. It was a labor of love for their dad and a huge effort.

Michelle My Jeannie Bean!

Jeannie has a heart bigger than most. She is fiercely loyal, supportive and so very giving. Jeannie takes care of everyone around her before she takes care of herself. I’ve watched Jeannie so tenderly care for her animals with all her heart. I’ve watched time and again as she has done everything she can to save a baby calf, a kitten, or new puppy. I’ve watched as her heart broke when her beloved dog had to be put to sleep after getting ran over. She never left his side and talked and cradled him until he drifted away. She wrapped him up and carried him home to bury him. Animals have always responded to Jeannie and sensed her love. Jeannie has spent many nights sleeping in the barn with a sick calf or a colt.

47 THE SHOWTIMES

I know I must have done something really good in the pre-existence to have been blessed to grow up in the family I did. Seven Sisters & our little brother Steven were quite the crew. God knew that we loved each other TOO much to just be friends, so he made us Sisters! My sisters are my very best friends. Every day I look forward to our phone conversations, (usually more than one!) texts, and inside jokes! As soon as we start to talk, another sister usually calls in and sometimes 5 of us end up on a merged phone call, sometimes we even let Steven in! Sisterhood is something I hold sacred to my heart.

NOV/DEC 2015

Working together was a special blessing for our family. It taught them responsibility, compassion and skills as well as getting along with each other (most of the time!) Many times they would leave home being quite upset at each other, but after riding all day for cattle, or having to depend on each other for help, they’d come home being good friends again and realizing that their efforts made a huge difference in accomplishing all that had to be done on the ranch. They became a team.

What an honor to write about my sister. I’m sure you are all aware of the love and passion Jeannie has for the cattle industry, but I want to tell you about Jeannie my sister & how very special she is!

As caring as she is with animals, she is more than that with our family. She is a worker and tears in and helps anyway she can. I have been lucky to get to visit Oklahoma often. It is so fun to go but we always cry when we have to say goodbye. We get to see each other every couple of months but we would all love to live next to each other. Many times on my plane ride home I’ve reached into my bag to find a letter from Jeannie telling me how much it meant that I came to see her. I then always start to cry all over again!

voice and eyes for our cattle.

My favorite thing to watch, besides her and John getting married is watching Jeannie being a Mom. My heart is full to see her so happy and to see her take her role as a Mother and a Wife as a very sacred and special calling. This summer her little Garrett was so sick and after spending 10 days in the ICU at OU Children’s Hospital, Garrett was flown to Boston Children’s Hospital where he was for the next 30 days. Jeannie & John never ever left Garrett’s side. I flew to Boston with Maggie and I will never forget when John picked us up at the airport and saw little Maggie, & then when Jeannie first saw her at the hospital. I think that is what heaven will be like when we see our loved ones again. Pure LOVE. My love for John grew a million times to know that as busy as he was, he stayed right with Jeannie and Garrett the whole time. To watch him pray for Garrett and his family each night was also something I will never forget. Both he and Jeannie were so humble and not only prayed for Garrett but all of the children in the hospital and for the doctors, nurses and surgeons. Leaving to come home while they were still in the hospital was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, the only way I was able to, was because I knew John would stay with Jeannie every step of the way. I love the way they love each other.

We have always teased that she was our mini mom. From babying Birdy, to giving us advice on boys, which was often, (oh could she be a hypocrite in this area!) Jeannie was always there. Because of this we asked her for permission a lot of times instead of Mom and Dad.

A huge part of who Jeannie is, is her strong faith and firm testimony of God and her Savior, Jesus Christ. She has always been an example to me . Jeannie, you are remarkable in every way! I love you Jeannie Bean and I couldn’t have asked for a better, sweeter, kinder sister. All my love, Michelle Emily I don’t know a person more deserving for this award than Jeannie. Jeannie has always had an obvious passion, dedication, and love for the cattle industry. Growing up Jeannie was always by Dad’s side grasping to learn more. When it came time for breeding, calving, our annual Cow and Bull Sales, or moving cows on the mountains, you could find Jeannie in the corrals or on a horse. She spent numerous nights going through our Yardley Cattle Co. records studying blood lines and cow families. Anyone that went through our herd could see and hear the love in her

Jeannie has always been someone I have looked up to and admired since I was a little girl. In my eyes she was my guardian angel. On more occasions than once she saved Tawnya and me from having to go by ourselves with Lori and Steven, they teased us ruthlessly! Even when Jeannie threatened that she wouldn’t clip our steers for us, she would always cave in and help us and then haul us to the shows.

No matter what she has always believed in me and pushed me to be better. We were roommates for a couple years before she married John. They were some of the best times. We fought now and then, mainly because we were so sleep deprived from calving heifers, but we always usually made up within the day. Except for the time she had me take her 2:00 am shift to check heifers. She failed to mention until I got back in that there was a strange vehicle parked outside that left as soon as our lights came on and that everyone was home at Mom and Dad’s so it couldn’t have been them. On that night she did care more about her sleep than me! As happy as I was for her and John to get married; I was just as sad that she was going to leave me, we had a pact to be old maids and live together forever! She has made up for it though with Maggie and Garrett! I may be biased but I think above anything else, Maggie and Garrett are her biggest success. She doesn’t let them slow her down and they go wherever she goes, whether it be on the horse, in the corral, Stock shows, or a cattle sale. She and John are instilling in them the same love for the industry they have. I don’t know many three year olds who know what a good bag on a cow is! I love you Jeannie and I’m so proud of you! Love, Emily Lori I read somewhere “Because I have a sister I will always have a friend.” Jeannie is more than just a sister to me she is one of my very best friends in the world. We live thousands of miles away from each other and we still talk on the phone every day, usually more than once. Oh, the adventures we have had! From climbing trees, to making mud pies, and catching wild kittens. She is in almost all of my childhood memories. Growing up in a big family was an adventure in and of itself! If we hadn’t lived on a ranch

we would have probably killed each other. Luckily for my mom we went with my dad a lot. It was on those long hard days that some of our best memories were made. We had to learn to not only work with each other but also rely on each other. We talked, we laughed, we goofed off, we learned to work, and we became best friends. As soon as Jeannie was old enough to “legally” drive she drove us to stock shows all over Utah. Since she was usually the oldest one there she was the one in charge. Somewhere along the way I dubbed her “Mini Mom” a nickname that was/is very fitting! After graduating from college she came home to work on the ranch, my little sisters would often times call Jeannie to ask permission if they could do things. Although the nickname is in fun, Jeannie has been there through the good, the bad, and the ugly.

and thinking we were interior decorators. It is most likely because of this that Jeannie’s house is decorated so cute.

Jeannie is fearless; she knows she can do anything and she does. It is with this bravery that we took it upon ourselves to remodel our family cabin the year I graduated from high school. It is honestly a blessing that neither of us came down with hanta virus. The attic was unfinished and was home to many creatures over the year and we played Rock, Paper, and Scissors many times to decide who would get to lay to rest the corpses of many mice and other rodents. Although it was one of the most disgusting things I have ever done it is an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. We spent many days and all-nighters talking and painting

Steven Ever since we began showing Jeannie has been passionate about cattle. Our dad, Gib would take us down to Bakersfield to the California Select Feeder Show and Sale, to Denver to The National Western Stock Show and to various other shows and sales every year, and as we got older we would go around to all of the stock shows around Utah. My dad began training us in what to look for and how to judge good cattle from day one. No matter where we would go Jeannie would leave an impression on those she met as an attractive, competent young woman with a

Jeannie has a special way of making sure everyone shines. She’s not afraid to share the spotlight even if she is the one that earned it. She is hands down one of the hardest workers I know and she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. Of all Jeannie’s achievements the one I’m the most proud of her for is being a mom. She and John are amazing parents to Maggie and Garrett. I love you Jeannie and I’m so proud to call you mine! Love, Lori Ann

love of cattle and a strong-willed determination to do her best. Her love of livestock and good cattle has carried her far, early on she would place high or win many of the 4H and FFA judging contests. Her senior year our FFA Judging team had the highest score for the state of Utah. Since high school her competence in judging good cattle has taken her from the prestigious Junior National Angus Show to the competitive Iowa and Nebraska State Fairs among several other shows along the way. Her uncompromised integrity for quality over politics has helped her gain the appreciation of astute cattlemen and showmen across the Nation. Jeannie still attributes her success at judging to our dad, Gib, and the lessons he taught us early in life. She has also excelled in making beautiful and creative catalogs and ads for Yardley Cattle Company and Griswold Cattle Company that are read and appreciated by top cattlemen and women in every facet of the industry. She continually has a forward thinking approach to the cattle industry and the problems it faces. Jeannie also has a great love for horses and Corgi dogs. Jeannie and John Griswold’s marriage and relationship was a match made in heaven with their love of each other and their two children, Maggie and Garrett, being about the only thing that surpasses their love and appreciation for good cattle. John’s good natured and friendly approach to the newest showman or the most seasoned veteran is appreciated by all. His relentless pursuit for developing excellent cattle has led to one of the most successful, prestigious, and talked about sales in the nation, The Classic. His ability to market semen stands nearly unparalleled with anyone in the world. John’s success on the show circuit is equally impressive as he has had many Grand and Reserve Champions at about every major show across the nation including the NAILE, the American Royal, and the National Western, just to name a few. This award couldn’t go to two more deserving individuals, congratulations

Jeannie and John Griswold. Steven Yardley Angela Birdy There was a lot of us growing up, and we did not always get along. In fact, being the youngest I realized quickly that I was not safe with any of my siblings, unless Jeannie was there. She rescued me many of times from the threats of older siblings putting me in the cellar. No matter where we went Jeannie somehow kept us from killing each other. If we went to stock shows, Jeannie would take us. If we rode on the mountain, all of us younger siblings would hope we would get sent with Jeannie. She may have got us all lost more than a few times, but to our relief we always knew Jeannie would make sure we were safe. I remember being sick and having everyone else in the family not want to get by you, but Jeannie would risk herself getting sick to help us. Jeannie puts others before herself, no matter the consequences. Jeannie’s big heart was not just for people. Many nights Jeannie would walk outside in her pajamas and muck boots to check the cows and heifers only to find that one had been born in a snow drift or mud puddle and was freezing to death. So at two in the morning Jeannie would come in, covered in head to toe in mud pulling the calf across her kitchen floor into the bathroom, then somehow get the calf inside the tub turn on the hot water and climb in to make sure the calf ’s head stayed above water. Whether sick, having boy problems or frustrated with school Jeannie always knew what to do and say. Did she always listen to her own advice, no, but she said it with enough confidence that you always believed what she said. Some of the advice she gave may have been in vain but one bit of her advice she did listen was, ‘never let fear prevent you from being you or becoming your best, you come from a strong line of confident, smart women, and don't let anyone or anything keep you from thinking otherwise.’ Jeannie lived by this. She always pushed herself to try a little harder to be a little better. She does not let others

determine her path but she creates, making it better than the other one. Thank you Jeannie for reminding me of my strength and for showing me that we do not have to put others down in order to improve ourselves. You are an amazing example. I love you Jeannie, Your little Birdy

During calving season, Jeannie would get up at midnight or 3:00 a.m. to check on the heifers. If one was calving, Jeannie would stay by it until it had its calf. She made sure everything was ok, before she went back to bed. One of the nights we were to get up and check on heifers, Jeannie and I slept at the end of the house. Instead of sleeping, we kept talking. Our window was open, and about the time we were to go check on the cows, we heard male voices outside. We were scared. We slithered out of our bed and army crawled all the way to our parent’s room. Dad told us some guys had wanted to try to catch some raccoons out by the river. He thought we would be asleep, and felt bad that we had got scared. On the way back to the room, Jeannie and I laughed at each other and at how bad our army crawl was.

Tawyna Jeannie is smart and hardworking. Whatever it is she sets her mind to doing she succeeds – from cooking to cows and from decorating to sewing. She is especially good at public speaking. She can connect with others remarkably and convey messages flawlessly. However, what I appreciate most about Jeannie is how she looked out for me so well as an older sister. When Jeannie lived at home, she’s who I went to in times of distress whether it was advice on how to break up with a boy or to get help from on big school projects – she’d have an answer to help. I always knew I could count on her and here are a couple examples why: Emily, Angela, and I were known as the three little girls growing up. My siblings Steven and Lori picked on us relentlessly and Jeannie was our protector. Jeannie is compassionate, from helping sick calves to sick siblings. When I was about 7 years old I got pink eye at the ranch cabin. There weren’t enough beds for everyone, so the kids had to share. All my other siblings loudly protested that they didn’t want me in their bed, except for Jeannie. She was gentle and kind enough to sleep with me when I was so contagious. In another incident, Steven and Lori got the bright and fun idea to float down the river in a hollowed out log and talked me into going with them, Jeannie was the one who came and rescued us downstream before the log sank. Although I was having fun, Jeannie was sensible enough to know it wasn’t such a bright idea after all. In conclusion, I look up to Jeannie for all of her skills and talents, but most of all because she is an awesome big sister! Growing up she was always there in times of need – whether it was to share a bed when I had pink eye or rescue me from older siblings, Jeannie knew just what to do. Thanks Jeannie! Your kids are as lucky to have you as a mom as I am to have you as an older sister. ▪

Many times before we had to leave for a stock show, us kids would stay up till the early morning hours. We told mom & dad we were just making sure we had everything ready, but in reality we were talking and telling each other all that was happening in our lives. Somehow the later we stayed up, everything we said became funnier. We would soon be laughing at the way each other laughed. Those were great times.

Jeannie's love for animals has continued. She has an amazing selfless spirit. She has honored her parents with the life she lives, and holds a spot in her heart for each of her siblings. She has a wonderful husband and two darling children, whom she cherishes, and would do anything for any of her family. We love you Jeannie, Love Julie.

NOV/DEC 2015

Julie Jeannie has one of the biggest hearts I know. Ever since she was little she has loved animals. When she was about 4 she would catch our cats and hug them tight. I think the cats were always glad when the hug was over, and they were released. Growing up she would mix milk for little calves, and enjoyed feeding them out of a bottle. When Jeannie was 13, we had a motherless colt named Chico. Every couple of hours it needed to be fed, and she would wake up in the night to feed it. It didn't take long until Chico thought us kids were his mom and would follow us up and down porch stairs, lay down by us, and walked anywhere we walked. Jeannie got a little Pomeranian puppy when she was about 15. She loved it so much, and it was her pride and joy. It got Parvo, and Jeannie would feed it food and medicine thru a shot needle syringe, trying to help it to get better. Jeannie was devastated as the puppy died in her arms.

As we grew up, Jeannie always spoke her mind and gave each of us advice. For the most part her advice was really good. However, we sometimes wondered why she didn't always follow her advice like she wanted us to. One time at a restaurant, Jeannie took a little coffee creamer and tasted it. She then ordered a hot chocolate, and put five little creamers in it. After that, she was hooked on cream, and to this day prefers cream in her cereal over milk.

Cattle

Lending their skills & knowledge of Hereford cattle and sheep to make their own impact on the livestock industry. BY AMANDA BACON, AR

Sheep

The three kids grew up raising and showing Hereford cattle and sheep across the country. They all played an instrumental part in taking care of the livestock at home and making decisions for the operation. As they got older they all began taking on larger roles with the cattle and sheep. They were each very active in 4-H, FFA and the National Junior Hereford Association. They developed a passion for agriculture just like their parents and took advantage of not only the livestock portion, but also the leadership opportunities within different agricultural associations and organizations. They each have served on the NJHA board of directors, where the youngest, Amanda, is currently serving as chairman. Cassie and Amanda both

The Bacon family is a fifth generation farm family located in Siloam Springs, AR, where they operate Bacon Cattle and Sheep. Craig Bacon grew up in Missouri where he started raising and showing Hereford cattle with his brother. The two of them developed Bacon Brothers Herefords and traveled to shows across the nation including the Polled Hereford Junior Nationals, where Craig won senior showman his last year. Debbie Bacon grew up in Missouri, as well, on a row crop and purebred Angus operation. Debbie showed various breeds of steers and Angus heifers throughout her childhood. Both Craig and Debbie attended the University of Missouri, where they participated on the livestock judging team. The two were married following college and Craig went on to obtain his masters degree and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee- Knoxville in Food Technology and Science. Upon the completion of his graduate studies, Craig took a job with Oscar Mayer, moving his family of three to Madison, Wisconsin. When Craig got offered a job with Tyson Foods Inc. in Springdale, AR, now a family of four, the family moved to northwest Arkansas, where Craig currently serves as the Sr. VP of Research and Development at Tyson. Craig and Debbie have three children, Cassie, Justin and Amanda who all grew up on the family operation.

served as the National Hereford Queen as well. Agriculture and the livestock industry were so influential in the kids’ lives that they each went on to get an agricultural degree. Justin and Cassie both graduated from Oklahoma State University and Amanda will graduate from there in the spring of 2016. Both Amanda and Cassie double majored in Agricultural Communications and Animal Science, while Justin majored in Meat Science. Cassie now runs her own livestock marketing company, Rural Route Creations, and resides in Canada with her husband. Justin is completing his masters at the University of Arkansas. All three of the Bacon children attribute much of what they are today, as a result of growing up in the agricultural industry and the life lessons they were taught each and every day from raising livestock.

BACON SHEEP

When it came time for Cassie to start showing at the age of five, Craig and Debbie purchased her a lamb from a producer in the state. The goal was to spark her interest in showing livestock, however they also ended up sparking their own interest in developing a flock of their own starting in 1998. Their initial flock started with a set of crossbred ewes with a broad genetic makeup. They started with just a small shed and a handful of ewes that they bred to produce market lambs for the kids. They would go out from time

to time and purchase ewes as well, that the kids would show and they would then put into the flock. As their flock grew they began to market their lambs to other families. They raised various purebred sheep throughout the years as well, including Suffolks, Hampshires and Shropshires. They have since dispersed all of their purebred flocks and now heavily focus on raising high quality market lambs for 4-H and FFA members across the country. All three of the kids were fortunate enough to have successful show careers showing across the state and at the American Royal and NAILE. They now have a flock that consists of approximately 120 wether dams that produce spring-born lambs. They have extensively added to their flocks’ genetics over the years incorporating ewes from Brister Club Lambs, Shrank Club Lambs, Powercat Club Lambs, Eagle Rock Club Lambs and Nathan/Langemeier Club Lambs. Facilities have changed drastically over the years, as well, to a heated lambing barn with cameras, to improve the success rate of live lambs. The family not only focuses on producing high quality show lambs though, but they also focus on building youth in agriculture. They pride themselves on being there to help share their knowledge they have gained showing through the years. Everyone plays a part in the sheep operation from the daily chores to the breeding decisions, and

when it comes lambing season it is “all hands on deck.” The family markets their sheep private treaty into several states, as well as at club lamb sales across Oklahoma and Texas. Adding further value to the sheep segment, Bacon lamb will be offered on the menu at several local upscale restaurants in Northwest Arkansas, when they open their doors this fall.

exhibiting cattle at the JNHE, all three of the Bacon children competed in showmanship, each being named top ten on several occasions. Amanda garnered the Reserve Champion Showmanship buckle in the Junior Division and a top ten Senior Showman again at her final JNHE. Many first place speech awards and scholarships were received by the Bacon siblings as well. All three were members of first place Quiz Bowl teams as well. A proud moment was receiving first place Team Marketing, with the team consisting of the three Bacon children, Cassie, Justin and Amanda. Over the years, showing at JNHE, all three were able to capture division champions with bred-and-owned animals. Each year the Bacons also exhibit at the American Royal, NAILE, NWSS and the Southwestern Livestock Exposition. The family has been very fortunate to have their genetics receive champion titles at each of these national shows. The family is most proud of the unique opportunity they had to watch their bull Remitall-West Game Day 74Y receive the World Champion Polled Bull at the World Hereford Conference in 2012. As they have built their program through the years, the Bacon family has consigned to various sales across the nation, as well as continuing to sell private treaty. They work as a family, filling in

NOV/DEC 2015

Cassie, Justin and Amanda mark the fifth generation in their family to raise Hereford cattle. That is something the family is very proud of. The family started their herd with the remainder of Craig’s show heifers, two first calf heifers. Through the years they have worked on building their herd’s numbers as well as quality by purchasing from reputable Hereford breeders from all across the nation, as well as Canada. The Bacons now have over 100 registered females in production as well as a number of recipient cows they use for embryo transfer. Their main goal is to produce high quality heifers and bulls that they can market as show prospects to juniors, while their secondary goal is to produce high quality replacement females and bulls that they can market to commercial producers. Annually, they market approximately 20 bulls to commercial breeders in a three state area. Additionally, the Bacons market semen on some of their herd sires as well as embryos from some of their donor cows. Each of the kids has been very active in showing Hereford cattle. Nineteen eighty-seven marked Cassie’s first Junior Nationals to attend at six months old. Since Cassie turned seven and was finally eligible to show, the family hasn’t missed a Hereford Junior Nationals. The Junior National Hereford Expo has served as a staple to the family’s summer for more than twenty years. Besides

where needed in the absence of the others, because of full time jobs and school, to get their cattle ready for shows and sales throughout the year. The only full time family member on the farm, is Debbie, allowing her the flexibility to travel on farm business as needed, as well as maintain the daily management of the operation.

2. SHOW CLINICS OUR FUTURE

The Bacon family plans on continuing to build their operation in the years to come. With Amanda showing at her last junior shows this year they hope to become even more active in marketing to juniors across the nation with both their cattle and sheep operations. They have built their operation on weekends and after school, but as the kids have gotten older they have been able to play such a large role in building the operation. With Justin’s presence back on the farm, while he works on his Masters Degree in Animal Science, he has been able to accomplish a great deal in helping our program move forward. He has been able to not only work show and sale cattle, but also maintain a great deal of the daily management of the cattle herd. He also has worked on pasture improvement and fencing as well. Being three years on a new farm, there is much to do in both regards. Amanda’s role includes not only care of the cattle and sheep, but she is the family member who photographs all of the livestock and is in charge of all marketing materials and designing all the farm ads. The talents of Justin and Amanda have undoubtedly taken our operation to a whole new level in the past few years. Together the Bacon family has worked to progress and set goals for the future. The family hopes to really focus on creating success for their customers on a state and national level. They plan to continue to build their presence in national sales and shows, and look to someday having their own production sales. ▪

Our family brings in various show clinic instructors to the farm so that our customers can have the opportunity to build their knowledge about showing and feeding from someone else’s perspective.

3. SHOWING SUCCESSFULLY

Oftentimes one of our family will be at the show where the junior exhibitor is competing with an animal we have sold to them. Assisting where needed, especially in clipping and fitting. Many times we will even provide transportation to get the animal there.

4. YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR SUCCESS

We thrive on our customers being successful and making memories of their own. We love when our customers can take our genetics back home and have them be successful in production as well.

5. WE DO IT AS A FAMILY

Everything that we do on our operation is done solely by our family. We work together to do daily chores, make breeding decisions and work livestock. Sometimes it is tough, but in the end it pays off because we know that it is truly a family operation and with that any rewards or successes are in fact an accomplishment shared by the whole family.

I’m going to start out west at Hutch and give you a couple of places to tempt your pallet with. If you like Mexican, I would recommend “Ponchito’s Mexican Restaurant.” Quite tasty and the prices are very affordable . I’m going outside my box now - down the road is “Bogeys.” The menu there is a little healthier than my normal stock show fare with the salads and sandwiches on the menu. STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA

Moving on down the road to Stillwater I have to make a stop at “Freddie Paul’s Steakhouse.” The soup and salad bar is one of the best around! Not to mention the steaks are as good as you can get anywhere. Freddie’s added a breakfast menu a couple of years ago for the morning crowd and I must say it also is top notch!! When you visit the home of the COWBOYS, you have just got to try some of the best BBQ in the state! That would be “Bad Brads BBQ.” Starting out in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, this local fare eventually spread out to the bright lights of Stillwater and is now one of my have too eat at places when I’m in that part of the world. I have a hard time deciding what I want to eat when I go there, so I usually have the combo plate so I can have a variety to sample. My list of places to chow down at could go on and on but rather than rewrite them I’d suggest going to the Showtimes APP and check it all out there. With Louisville coming up there are several awesome places on the App to scope out and give them a try. So much for now - safe travels and good luck at the shows! ▪

animals. Some families buy vacations, RV’s, motor cycles, boats, etc. while others buy drug rehab, lawyers, and teen pregnancy. So always remember that the money spent here is hopefully teaching responsibility, dedication, and reward. 3) Decide where you are going to buy. Don’t buy off someone because you think you have to, buy off someone you like and trust. You need to trust the guy you are buying from because I would hope they would guide you in the right direction to a calf that fits you and your families needs. That person is also going to be your teachers and hopefully your kids mentor. Now when you set out to find your next project here is the biggest piece of advice I can give you……………Don’t get in a hurry!!! You will be much more satisfied with your purchase by waiting till later to buy. The later you wait to buy for next year the more it takes out the guess work on the way the calf will turn out. So wait until later to make your purchase. Good luck at all the winter shows! ▪

he tip this month is going to be based on selection. It’s getting to be that time that many of you are thinking about finishing this year as well as already thinking about next year. In the selection process I have a few things or guidelines that I like to follow to help make the year as successfully as possible. Decide as a family before you ever leave home a few things. 1) Decide what you are going to buy. Heifer or steer? What breed? The only advice I have here is that if you have younger kids to put them in a small breed in numbers so when you go to the show they have a better chance of being at the upper end of the class to build confidence. 2) Decide what you are going to spend. This can be a deep subject but ALWAYS remember the more you spend the more you win is NOT the truth. The truth is the more you work the more you win. The highest priced calf with little work equals nothing but an average priced quality calf with the right effort equals a winner. In the livestock show world we buy

PATIENCE

PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS:

NOV/DEC 2015

WHAT IS PATIENCE? In short, having patience means waiting without complaint. In our society of instant gratification, people often want results NOW, but it doesn’t really work that way. When you expect immediate results, you lose sight of the big picture and the opportunity to achieve even larger goals. We all know it can be hard to have a good attitude all the time without getting upset, especially since showing livestock can be so frustrating at times. But that’s when patience comes in handy. If you stick with the task, slow down, assess the big picture and focus on desired results, you’re less likely to make mistakes and will learn more in the process. When it comes to your livestock projects, what do you think looks better in the ring…a calf or lamb that’s been clipped or sheared by someone who took the time to learn and practice or ones that have some mistakes just because someone wanted to get it done? Consider these Do’s and Don’ts of PATIENCE with your next livestock project:

THE SHOWTIMES

78

Do’s and Don’ts of PATIENCE Set realistic expectations. Challenges and obstacles are a normal part of life and waiting is an unavoidable part of the process. Winning the banner doesn’t happen overnight, and working toward that goal takes time. Set low standards. If you’re not committed to excellence, how can you achieve it? When you have low standards, you have little desire to work toward success. So, set realistic goals to set you on the steady path to the banner. Choose to be patient. Sometimes it’s really hard to wait for your first or next win, but when you do, you will be far more successful in the end because you have learned even more in the process. Plan poorly. When you are ill-prepared for a show, you leave no room for setbacks that might occur. This lack of preparation can make you very impatient and lead to hasty decisions that can lead you away from your goals. Practice, practice, practice. Being patient can be uncomfortable at times because you have to repeatedly make conscious decisions to slow down. It will take time to learn the new behavior pattern, but as you practice, you’ll find yourself more satisfied and less stressed. Stress out. When you are stressed, you are more apt to make quick decisions that only lead to more stress down the road. So, next time you’re feeling uneasy, slow down, take a deep breath and even walk away for a few minutes if you have to. You’ll be glad you did.

BY WEAVER LEATHER LIVESTOCK

HOW IS YOUR PATIENCE? Take a look at the chart on the previous page. Have you ever gotten stressed and made a quick decision that actually hindered your goals? Can you think of a situation where you had to work on being patient when things weren’t going as planned? How did you handle that situation? Join us at facebook.com/thewinnersbrand or thewinnersbrand.com and click on the link provided to share your experience with PATIENCE. You will be entered for a chance to win a Weaver Leather Livestock prize package and your story will be shared in the next issue of Showtimes Magazine! CONGRATULATIONS TO B. RUMBERGER... ...winner of the ATTITUDE Weaver Leather prize package! Read below to learn how she demonstrates ATTITUDE with her livestock projects. Thank you to everyone who entered! “I believe that attitude is a vital part of being a successful livestock showman. Six years ago, when I first began my showing career, I realized the true value of this quality. At nine years old, exhibiting in my first livestock show was a very daunting experience. Stepping into the ring for the very first time, my heart raced and my palms sweated, however whenever I exited the show ring, tears flooded my eyes and a last place ribbon sat in my pocket. I was absolutely devastated and was convinced that I could never show again. But then, my dad’s advice helped me to change my perspective and outlook. He looked at me and said, ‘You need to get back up and try again, it’s not too late to make this better.’ These simple words inspired me to see things differently and to have a more positive viewpoint on the situation. Ever since that day, livestock showing has become such a huge part of my life. If I would have remained in my pessimistic state, I would not have experienced the many opportunities that were to come. Attitude has the power to completely change your focus from the negative situations, to the blessings of the past and the hopes of the future. So, I encourage you to alter your gaze to the positive things and transform your mindset. I assure you that you will be utterly amazed at the influence that this simple adjustment of thought can have.”

#1 GOAL PULLING IT OFF WITH HOLLYWOOD. BY BRENDON HAUXWELL, NE

Showing cattle and being involved in the beef industry has always been part of my life. I am the nineteen-year old son of Bryan and Ami Hauxwell from McCook, Nebraska. My family has a diversified crop production farm and operates Hauxwell Trucking. Winning the Nebraska State Fair Market Show has been my number one dream since I first started showing at the age of eight. My family purchased a steer named Hollywood last fall because I knew there was something special about him. My family and I took Hollywood to several shows through the winter and spring months where he excelled in the show ring. All of the early mornings spent rinsing, drying, and working hair paid off in the end. As state fair was quickly approaching, I knew Hollywood had grown into an exceptional steer. My last year of 4-H needed to end in the ultimate dream of showing the champion market animal! Now that Nebraska State Fair was here, Hollywood had to be looking his best at all times. There were always people at my stall area internally evaluating him. Finally, it was the day that I had been waiting for … show day! Having to get up early to get Hollywood looking his finest paid off when I received the handshake later that day during the championship drive. Getting through the class and division caused my nerves to become frazzled. Enduring the final moments stretched my nerves beyond imagination while the judge made her final comments about the steers. Standing there and watching her internally ponder each steer’s qualities before taking that final walk was excruciating! Once the judge set into motion and headed in my direction, I knew that handshake that I had chased for years was forthcoming. The extreme nervousness disappeared as she slapped Hollywood and reached for my hand. All my hard work throughout the summer finally paid off. I could not have done this without my parents, family, and supporters along the way. I showed the 2015 Nebraska State Fair 4-H Champion Market Animal and that day is truly memorable because my goal was achieved by years of hard word, dedication, and desire. ▪

TULSA STATE FAIR

BY SETH TUCKER, OK

am 13 years old and in the 7th Grade at Lindsay Middle School. I have been a member of the 4H club and showing livestock for 4 years. I show steers, sheep, and pigs. I also have been livestock judging for 3 years. I am active in my youth group at Lindsay First Baptist. I am also active in sports. Golfing, Football, and basketball.

How I felt when I won Tulsa: In the grand drive, as the judge said he was going to pick the champ, I thought he may be walking my way, but wasn’t sure. Then he came and picked me. I felt a sense of relief and happiness. This was one of the best days of my life. This win took a lot of hard work, determination, and dedication. I give all the glory to God. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to my parents, grandparents, Colton Wynne, and everyone at Bonham Show Cattle. ▪

YEARBOOK 2015

NOV/DEC 2015

THE BEST OF 2015

THE SHOWTIMES

186

2015 was our biggest year yet at The Showtimes. It has been fun watching our magazine grow from issue to issue and year to year. Our State Fair Edition alone was 78 pages bigger than last year’s issue and 280 pages bigger than the same issue from 2011. More advertisements, more Show Results and more Features have made an impact. We traveled across the country to shows and events. We enjoyed visiting with readers and exhibitors at our booths in Denver, Springfield, Grand Island, Des Moines, Pueblo, Tulsa and Kansas City. Back in 2007 when we started The Showtimes, we wanted to be different than everyone else. We wanted The Showtimes to be about you, not only ads. We molded The Showtimes into a publication that is all about you. We wanted to bring you designs, photos and videos that have never been done in our industry. We always push ourselves further with each issue. We feel the most important part is traveling to shows and getting each issue into the showman’s hands. The showman are our advertiser’s target market. They are the ones who purchase show

cattle, supplies, feed and other products that are advertised in our magazine. The response has been overwhelming. In addition to the magazine, our videos and promotional items have been a big hit. Our recent Kansas City Steer and Goat show videos have been viewed over 8,600 times in just the first few days following the show! Our videos have now been viewed over 161,981 times since we started in 2011! The Yearbook has become one of our favorite features in The Showtimes. It gives us a chance to reflect on the past year and share that with our readers. We’ve put together some of our favorite features, Faces and Places, Show Results and Hall of Fame members. Plus, we reveal our five new Exhibitors of the Year, Steers of the Year, Heifers of the Year and Hogs, Lambs and Goats of the Year on the following pages. We hope you enjoy our 2015 Yearbook! We have big plans for 2016!

MARCH/APRIL 2015 Sire Edition

Junior National Edition

We kicked off 2015 with our Jan/Feb issue. Our Denver issue is always one of of favorites, and this issue was no different. It was our first magazine to feature 3 covers! Plus, it featured Matt Lautner Cattle’s Italian Stallion. This issue was distributed every day in Denver during the National Western Stock Show, as well as Fort Worth, Sioux Falls and Houston!

Our second issue of the year featured Rodgers Cattle Company for the first time. The Sire Edition featured numerous top new sires from across the country as well as Show Results from the early stock shows. In addition to multiple judging contests and jackpot shows, this issue was promoted at the Blackout Jackpot 3 in Loveland, Colorado. It featured a unique maroon and blue cover.

The May/June 2015 Junior National Edition was distributed to all of the Junior Nationals across the country this Summer. In addition to having a white cover, the frame around Streitmatter Show Cattle was die-cut! This allowed for readers to view their logo on the inside page of the magazine. It was the first time we used this unique effect on a cover. We personally traveled to Springfield, IL and Grand Island, NE promoting this issue!

The above issue became not only our biggest issue ever printed, but also our favorite! At 480 pages, this issue was 280 pages bigger than the same issue just four years ago. Sullivan Cattle Company was featured on both the front and back cover. This issue hit every state fair across the country! Plus, we personally traveled to Des Moines, IA, Grand Island, NE and Pueblo, CO to promote this issue!

Winegardner Show Cattle had the cover of our Sept/Oct 2015 Fall Edition. This issue was shipped to the Fall shows including Aksarben, Tulsa State Fair, NILE and the American Royal! In addition to featuring Show Results from the State Fairs, this issue also had many interesting articles including recent Hall of Fame Inductee Don Greiman of Iowa.

The issue you are now holding might have one of our favorite covers we have ever printed. The Nov/Dec 2015 Year Edition wraps up our most successfull year to date. With metallic gold and classy black and white photos, it is one of a kind. Inside this issue is our 2015 Yearbook that reflects on the best cattle, exhibitors and features from the past year!

THIS ISSUE WE RECOGNIZE FIVE OF THE TOP EXHIBITORS FROM THIS PAST YEAR.

YEARBOOK 2015

Once again this year, we are recognizing five individuals that have risen to the top. Showing livestock at a competitive level is never easy. It takes hard work, knowledge, dedication and sometimes even a little luck to be successful. This year we are honoring Andrew Hodges, Kennedy Core, Olivia Caldwell, Sara Sullivan and Lillie Skiles on outstanding years! There were so many exhibitors across the country that won multiple shows, that it was hard to narrow our list down to five. Not only did these five win, they won big. Everyone of these showman dominated shows this past year. Congratulations on being The Showtimes’ Exhibitors of the Year!

GET IN WHERE YOU FIT IN

W

estern Illinois University, located in Macomb, Illinois, is embedded in a region with some of the most productive crop ground and progressive livestock producers in the country. Within a mile span you can drive down multiple roads in the area, passing by numerous livestock operations that are known for raising nationally competitive cattle, sheep, and hogs. Within the same distance, it’s just as common to pass an operation raising 250+ bushel corn. Being raised on a grain focused operation and showing for multiple years, I visited many schools and there wasn’t one more fitting than Western. Western Illinois’ Livestock Judging Team has a long history of being a top five nationally competitive team. Bruce Engnell, who coached for 40 years, developed a tradition of attracting talented, hard working livestock kids. Starting in 2003, our current coach, Dr. Mark Hoge,

continued that same tradition at Western. At practice, we learn industry concepts and study kinds of stock, not just how to place four head. Within the reasons room, Mark strongly encourages and promotes creativity and progressive concepts, in terms of describing the livestock. Mark ‘s approach is always positive, and he never approaches anything as a dictatorship. When we practice, we focus hard, but we also know how to laugh and have a good time. I love time we spend as a team, in and out of practice. The livestock judging team is truly your family and a home away from home. WIU, in an area of some of the most advanced agriculture, is comprised of 12,000 undergraduate students, 350 of those are agriculture focused. For those who are interested in learning, from being a competitive judge or an active student, WIU is the answer. As a current student I love the small class sizes and the one on one attention you can receive. You aren’t just a number and you won’t get lost in the mix. All agriculture faculty members are very committed to a hands on approach. You will work closely together with

Being at WIU, you are a part of a tight knit group, with a great sense of pride. Like Mark said this week, “We pride ourselves in representing all aspects of the livestock industry, not just livestock evaluation and selection - and that is what makes us different.” ▪ By: Katie Lewis, Member of 2015 Livestock Judging Team Follow us on Facebook: WIU Livestock Judging or WIU School of Agriculture Contact: Dr. Mark Hoge | md-hoge@wiu.edu | 309.255.2735

The best part about Western, though, is how it impacts your future, after your time spent in Macomb. Our judging alumni speak for themselves, in terms of their positions held within the agriculture realm and shows

they have judged. They, no doubt, are visible industry leaders. Securing jobs in the livestock industry, going to graduate school or med school, will not be a problem if you work hard. NOV/DEC 2015

teachers and other students, on a daily basis to achieve a wide range of goals. Sure, we work hard to be elite livestock evaluators, but just as importantly we put on an annual bull test and sale, two annual judging contests, take leadership roles in 16 different clubs, calve cows, raise competitive show pigs, sell club lambs, and organize three livestock shows a year. Stay humble and hustle hard, isn’t something we say for fun, it is our way of life. The amount of activities and tasks we compete in a week is beyond imaginable. You definitely gain great time management skills and are never bored, as a student and livestock enthusiast at Western Illinois.

THE INDUSTRY IS OUR ENDPOINT

n the heartland of America, nestled amongst a backdrop of wheat-fields and the rolling prairies of Kansas, a school with a longstanding tradition of success can be found. Hutchinson Community College’s agriculture program attracts students to its diverse academic disciplines, competitive judging teams and the opportunity to become part of a network of industry leaders as an HCC alum. Students from coast-to-coast and Canada are drawn to a program founded on production principles and the focus on preparing students for roles in the industry as future agricultural leaders. Community and industry support make it possible to provide opportunities for students at the 450acre school farm encompassing row

crop and greenhouse production, as well as a purebred Angus cow-herd. Students are involved in many aspects of the daily management of each enterprise which provides invaluable hands-on experience and access to new technologies. The school’s livestock judging team, showcases student’s from diverse agricultural backgrounds, ranging from the ultra-competitive livestock showmen to the blue-collar, hardworking kid with just a few judging contests under their belt. During their tenure at HCC, students develop their evaluation, communication and decision making skills competing in 20-25 contests per year, including six national events their sophomore season. The nationally competitive team is under the direction of Ben Williams with assistance from 2013 HCC alum, Bobby Strecker. During the 2014-2015 season members of the team were honored to be named the Champion Overall Team at the Fort Worth Stock Show, Reserve Champion Team at the American Royal as well as being named the high team in the cattle, swine and reasons divisions at the North American

Under the influential direction of true ‘stockman’ coaches - Chris Mullinix, Scott Schaake and Shane Bedwell – the HCC coaching staff uses the same approach to student development as the primary focus in their role as advisor, mentor and coach to over 100 students enrolled in the HCC agriculture program. Although the recent team and individual results are impressive accolades, the program’s true success is measured by the impact HCC alumni have on the livestock and agricultural industry nation-wide in their years following participation in the judging program. ▪

ake Land College, located in Mattoon, Ill., offers more than 150 academic programs, housed in seven academic divisions. Leading the way is the college’s Agriculture Division, which offers students more than 10 different programs and majors in addition to extra-curricular activities such as the award winning Livestock Judging Team. The nationally ranked Lake Land College Agriculture Division attracts students from all across the nation, and the college’s Livestock Judging Team alone represents seven different states including Florida, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. From the campus farm to expert faculty, the Lake Land College Ag Division has a strong history being a frontrunner in agriculture education. In fact in 1975, Lake Land College was a charter member of the

Junior College Livestock Coaches Association, the governing organization for junior college livestock judging contests. As many community college systems were established in the late 1960s and early 1970s, former Lake Land College Livestock Judging Coach Tom Reedy was an active member in establishing the junior college division for livestock judging throughout the country. “It’s wonderful to be part of an organization that has made agriculture education a top priority and I think this shows since Lake Land has been a part of junior college livestock judging since its inception,” Lake Land College Livestock Judging Coach and Agriculture Instructor Ryan Orrick said. Competing in nine different competitions, the Lake Land College Livestock Judging Team has won the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn., the American Royal in Kansas City, Mo., and the North

American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. many times over. In addition to these contests, the team competes in the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Houston, Texas, the Flint Hills Classic Spring Livestock Show in Kansas., the Stockman Livestock Judging Contest in Auburn, Ind., the Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo in Jackson, Miss., and the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo in San Antonio, Texas.

The success of the Lake Land College Livestock Judging team relies heavily on the industry relevant knowledge of the coaches and the outstanding performance of team members. Throughout the history of the program, a Lake Land College team member has placed as a high individual overall at every national contest. Over the past year, the team has been named the Reserve Champion Team at the National Barrow Show, the Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Continuing in the strong tradition of livestock judging and agriculture, the Lake Land College Livestock Judging Team plans to build upon its competitive reputation and broaden recruitment beyond the current states represented on the team. Former coaches of this award winning team include Tom Reedy, Nic Nelson, Curt Rincker and Jon Althaus. Nelson, the current national winning Lake Land College softball coach, is the former manager of a purebread livestock operation in Illinois. Rincker, the

To ensure student success, Lake Land College has taken a proactive role in securing state-of-the-art resources for agriculture education in order to prepare the next generation of ag professionals to continue the strong tradition of American agriculture. Leaving the college with a strong foundation in livestock judging, Laker graduates continue to compete at four-year universities including the Ohio State University, Michigan State University, Purdue University, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University, the University of Nebraska, Texas A&M University, the University of Illinois and Western Illinois University. Placing emphasis on reaching college and career goals, the Lake Land College Agriculture Division intends to continue its successful transfer programs to prepare students for a seamless transfer to any four-year university along with continuing its successful Associate of Applied Science program, in which students complete a 26-week internship with direct on-the-job training built into the two-year curriculum. ▪

In his fifth year as the coach for Lake Land, Orrick has coached teams that have won the National Barrow Show and the Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo. Additionally, he has coached the high individual at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the National Barrow show and the Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo. He is a graduate of Lake Land College and Kansas State University. “Livestock judging at the collegiate level provides opportunities to expand knowledge in livestock evaluation and improve soft skills like decision making, communication, teamwork and competing,” said Livestock Judging Coach and Agriculture Instructor Ryan Orrick. “Students who have this opportunity meet lifelong contacts and expand networking opportunities in the industry.”

owner of a successful Simmental Cattle operation in Shelbyville, Ill., has judged several national shows, including the National Western Lives tock Show and Rodeo and the American Royal Livestock Show. He is the former Illinois Beef Association president and director for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He also served as the former division chair and instructor Lake Land College. Althaus, the current Lake Land College Agriculture Division chair and instructor won the North American International Livestock Exposition in 1995 and 1998, the American Royal Livestock Show in 2006 and 2010, and judged the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, National Barrow Show, and multiple state fairs from 1992-2011.

What to do when “No” is not an answer. And do it well.

Muir Family 2014 Christmas Card

THE SHOWTIMES

THE FAMILY THAT DOES IT ALL.

meet the exhibitors

NOV/DEC 2015

People are always asking us, “What do you guys do for a living?” Well folks, all I can say is whatever you may need, we can probably accomplish it! Sometimes “No” just isn’t in the Muir vocabulary.

THE SHOWTIMES

244

We run about 50 head of Maine-Anjou, Simmental, and Chi cattle where we reside, in Waynesfield, OH. We sell everything mostly private treaty, though we have exhibited sale cattle at the Ohio Beef Expo for the past 20 years! We have always raised and shown our own cattle, but recently have been fortunate enough to purchase a few to show and put in our herd as well. Over the years, our cattle have been the heart of everything we do, and we love sharing our knowledge with new families as they venture into the lifestyle of showing cattle. Our operation started out entirely children based, and it shows in the names we have chosen for our calves throughout the years. Many were based off of children’s shows like Rugrats, That’s So Raven, and Rocket Power. Nothing brings greater joy than being able to help a young kid get started in the livestock industry. I guess you could say we are all still children at heart, and those who know us, or have seen us around, would say we act like it most of the time! Cattle have been in our family’s blood for many generations. Both Terry and Andra grew up showing cattle and met on the show road. Andra’s parents, the Bonino’s, bought their first crossbred bull in the late 70’s and went on to build a cow calf operation in Michigan which was mainly Chianina influenced, including a few fullbloods. On the Muir side, Angus cattle were dominant. Dwight and Sue Muir, of Rippey, IA, raised cattle, horses and hogs, and farmed about 800 acres. They also had an embroidery business, which is

still thriving today! Terry’s sisters, Teela Sadowsky and Julie Muir, and their families, are also in the cattle business. They run about 200 Angus cattle in Eagleville, MO. The Sadowsky girls are very involved with the Angus Association, and show at many shows. Raising cattle is not just a hobby for this family! We also own and operate a hay company where we run about 400 acres and sell round bales and small square bales. We also have a custom mowing contract with Buckeye Pipe of Lima, OH where we bale pipeline fields and mow road frontages. We also grow our own speltz which we feed to our show stock very faithfully. A.I. School is also one of many things taught here at Muir Enterprises! Terry is the head master and teaches the techniques while the slaves, Candace, Ali and Wilson help get cows in and prepare lunch! We also have an embryology business and donor drop off. If you need embryos put in, or a donor set up for shots, you’ve come to the right place! Is that it? Nope. The list continues. One business that has really taken off the past couple years is our custom fence building. We mostly specialize in building high tensile wire fence. Candace likes to drive the posts while Terry sits and talks on the phone in the skidloader. This avoids a lot of mistakes and arguments, since Candace has a short attention span and sings to herself then forgets what levers to push when she runs the skid loader! The most intriguing business venture of ours has to be our new catering business, More Cowbell Catering. Ali is pretty much the Head Cheese here! Ali cooks all the sides and desserts, figures

We could not do all of this without the help of our two college employees, Gabe Hennon and Deryk Plapp, Terry’s girlfriend, Amanda Liffiton, and all the volunteers and extra help we’ve had along the way. If you are in need of specialty steaks or cuts of meat, Amanda’s new business, Pusheta Creek Steak Co. can get it for you.

Candace, Ali, and Wilson each try to have a life of their own as well. Ali currently attends Sullivan University in Louisville, KY where she studies Culinary Arts. There she has learned all the essentials to make our catering business thrive! Her future plans include getting an associate’s degree in Culinary Arts, and a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management. Her dream job is to eventually travel and manage hotels and resorts across the nation! Wilson enjoys herding cattle and going on the show road. He likes to spend his spare time eating poop and taking naps in the truck, which is most of the time he’s home. He really enjoys playing with children and being the mediator during family feuds. Candace graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in Zoology and is still trying to find that perfect job. In the meantime, she started her own business, Hazel Rae Designs. She specializes in photography and hand crafted jewelry. She has taken pictures for livestock sales, weddings, senior pictures, prom, maternity, engagements, newborn, family, and even boudoir! :/ Her jewelry style is unique in that she never creates the same piece twice. She sells her jewelry online and mostly at cattle shows. She has also made custom jewelry for special events like banquets and weddings. Candace also substitute teaches at local elementary and high schools in her spare time. She has taught every grade, every subject and

NOV/DEC 2015

all the numbers, and uses her creativity to plan out each event. Terry cooks all of the meat and dirties all of the dishes. Candace organizes, decorates, and cleans all the dishes that her Dad and sister dirty! Wilson does the ultimate clean test when we have cleaned all we can. We have cooked for many events including weddings, graduations, banquets, raffles, birthdays, sales, class reunions and other special events. We recently cooked at opening ceremonies for Maine/ Chi Jr. Nationals in Springfield, IL. Some of our favorite items we have made include: Terry’s buffalo style, lemon pepper, and coconut lime chicken wings, Ali’s specialty pizza on the grill, Ali’s chocolate and key lime mousse shooters, Ali’s Alfredo, and Candace’s sherbert punch drink. (This should show you the level of cooking skills in the family; Candace definitely has the hard part huh? HA!) Ali also specializes in cakes, cupcakes and other pastries. Although those are some of our favorite items, our ultimate goal is to promote the Beef Industry. We really strive to promote beef through proper cooking. How many times have you been to a restaurant and asked for medium rare and get well done? Yuck! There is a big difference in the way meat is prepared and cooked, and our focus is to make it right for you!

gains great experience in doing so! She also is a free lance fitter, aka gypsy! Her winter and spring mostly consists of travelling and fitting cattle for our business as well as others! In our industry, it doesn’t get much better than that! The people you meet and the experience you gain is like no other. She has worked for Trennepohl Farms, Jones Show Cattle, Wilson Cattle Company, Craig Farms, Tingle Farms, R-T Cattle, and many more just one timers! Some fun breeds she has got to fit on in her adventures include Wagyu, Braford, Belted Galloway and can’t forget about the Mini Herfs! In our spare time, which we don’t get much of, we like to go to visit Mom, Charlie, and our little sister, Sophie who live in the woods in Northern Michigan. 246

Hobbies?? Well, we show all year long just like all the rest of you crazy cattle people out there. We probably attend or show at close to 50 shows a year including NAILE, multiple breed Jr. Nationals, NWSS, FWSS, Houston Livestock

Show, multiple state fairs and beef expos, and many jackpot shows as well. If you really sit down and think of how many shows you go to in your lifetime it’s truly amazing. We’ve always been firm believers in taking the whole herd. Candace (aka the drill sergeant) usually won’t let us leave the driveway otherwise. Why leave any at home? You never know when your time to shine will be or when the right person comes along to buy one! Why do we do it? Not sure really!! It’s in our genes I guess! Some recent Champions include: 2015 Reserve Champion Percentage Simmental heifer –Jr. Nationals, 2015 3rd Overall Mainetainer heifer- Jr. Nationals, 2015 Reserve Champion Mainetainer bull- Jr. Nationals, 2014 Champion Mainetainer bull- Jr. Nationals, 2014 Reserve Champion Mainetainer bull- NAILE, 2014 Grand Champion Overall heifer- Ohio State Fair, 2010 Grand Champion Maine-Anjou bull- NAILE. I guess we have a few things we do that don’t involve either work or cattle. We have recently purchased a pontoon for who knows what reason! We have a spot at a nearby lake, which we got to see a few times this summer fortunately! If Wilson had it his way, we would be there all the time! We all love to craft. Terry enjoys making wooden furniture and spending time in his woodshop. Candace and Ali like to make things out of glass bottles and other “junk” and paint cows on virtually anything we can find. Candace also likes to sing with the local bands and enter singing contests. She really just sings about anywhere and everywhere and recently just had the opportunity to be part of her first official recorded song! Terry judges many shows in surrounding states as well. (Ok that was cattle related, my bad.) Nearly all of what we do consists of being a family, which most of the time is great. But we all have that moment, that’s for sure. Whenever Dad gets mad and yells, our response is always “Well, Dad, we are out of you, so what do you expect!” ▪

Exhibitors from 48 states and scores of international visitors from six countries are drawn to the world’s largest purebred livestock exposition. Along with the Kentucky State Fair and the National Farm Machinery Show, the livestock expo is owned and produced by the Kentucky State Fair Board in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. This premier agricultural event is a natural fit for our Commonwealth where residents continue to honor our agricultural heritage and where agribusiness remains a staple of our ever-changing economy. Unknown to many, Kentucky is the top producer of beef cattle east of the Mississippi River, ranks near the top nationally for its number of farms – the majority of them being small, family-run operations, and is also recognized as the Horse Capital of the World. Started in 1974 at the behest of then-Gov. Wendell H. Ford as a beef-only show, NAILE has grown to include 10-different divisions of livestock, all competing for nearly $750,000 in premiums and awards. Upwards of 30,000 entries were registered at the 2014 expo, across the categories of alpacas, beef cattle, boer goats, dairy cattle, dairy goats, draft horses, llamas, market swine, quarter horses and sheep.

TIS THE SEASON PASTOR RANDY DAVIS TALKS ABOUT BEING THANKFUL NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES. BY PASTOR RANDY DAVIS, LIMA, OH

HOW WE MET RANDY We met Randy Davis when we visited Lima, Ohio for Maine Junior Nationals back in 2012. He is the Winegardner family's pastor. They had asked him to give a sermon during the show. We were greatly impressed with Randy. Since then, we have listened to his sermons in our office from time to time. When Brad Winegardner came out to Colorado to judge our show we visited about having Randy write a message for our upcoming issues. We hope you enjoy his message!

A

s we come to the close of harvest season and into the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, I want to use this time to remind us of a couple of very critical issues.

What are you thankful for today? Are you thankful for God’s provision for you family? Maybe the harvest wasn’t as good as you hoped. Can you be thankful you still have the ability to harvest? Maybe your show season was not what you had hoped for. Can you be thankful for the opportunity you had to show your animal and build memories for your family? When things don’t go as planned we need to be thankful anyway. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: 16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

In just a few weeks we will experience what can be the most stressful time of the year, Christmas. Why is Christmas so stressful to so many? Because they have forgotten the true meaning of what it is all about and have bought in to the American way of celebrating it. I want to give you an illustration that I know each of you can understand the real reason for this season. The Bible says that because Adam and Eve sinned in the garden that we had to make atonement for that sin. In the Old Testament imagine with me if you will the scene behind the sacrifice. They had to take their very best lamb and give it to the priest for a sacrifice for their atonement. Imagine if you had a lamb that was born and you could tell he was going to win the state fair competition but you had to turn it over to the priest for your sacrifice. Would you have done it? Some of you would have given your second best and won the fair and given some extra money to the building fund. The one reason my son didn’t want

Imagine how God must have felt giving His only son to be born of the Virgin Mary to live his life and ultimately become the spotless lamb who gave His life on a cross for our sins. Gods very best Lamb was given so our debt of sin could be paid. Have you received the payment? Have you taken advantage of the price that was paid? How would you feel if you sacrificed your very best lamb and people didn’t take advantage of it? John 3:16-18 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. What greater gift could you receive this Christmas than the gift of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. And never look at your best animal the same again. What if you had to give it up for the sacrifice for your sin? I am so glad that Jesus paid the price for me. Make it a blessed Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ▪ Randy Davis Lead Pastor First Assembly of God Church 1660 Findlay Road Lima, OH 45801 randy@limafirst.church limafirst.chu

261 THE SHOWTIMES

So here is the question: what are you thankful for today despite your circumstances? I am grateful for so many things: The way I was raised with a family who loved me and showed me how to live right. I’m thankful for a mom who pointed me to live for God no matter what. Thankful for the wife God gave me as a gift for this journey of life and the two wonderful kids she gave us. I am thankful for health and blessings. How many can you count?

to show steers at the fair was because of what happens to them after the fair. He wasn’t going to get attached and then send it to slaughter.

NOV/DEC 2015

Some interpret this scripture to be thankful for all circumstances and it actually says to be thankful “In” all circumstances. I am never thankful for a flat tire or an alternator gone out. I don’t like a light harvest or broken down equipment and high repair costs. But in all of this I can still be thankful! I can be thankful for my family who stands with me no matter what. I can be thankful for memories made on this journey that is filled with unpleasant circumstances.
