ANOTHER YEAR COMES TO A CLOSE.

W

hat another great year. Denver, Blackout Jackpot 4, Jr. Nationals, State Fairs, Aksarben, Kansas City, and now back to Louisville and all of the fall shows. WOW! The days are long but the years are short. My grandpa always said that time goes fast. Boy, was he right. As you flip through the pages and see our year book, I think that we can all agree that it is hard to believe that a new year is upon us. Compare the winners from the past year. Be sure to acknowledge the successes of these exhibitors when you see them. It goes a long way. They are truly some outstanding individuals. We all know

the work it takes to be at the top of the game. Checkout the newest hall of fame member on page 264! Our show previews on page 63 will highlight the shows that will finish up the year. As 2016 comes to a close, take time to be thankful for this great country that allows us to be a part of this industry. We are thankful for all of our advertisers, the shows, AGR’s, B & Bs, and especially our customers for being The Showtimes! Enjoy your Thanksgiving and have a Merry Christmas!

NEWS

AMERICAN ROYAL IS MOVING The American Royal Association announced Tuesday afternoon it they has reached an agreement with the State of Kansas and Unified Government to relocate to Wyandotte County, Kansas.

NOV/DEC 2016

“The American Royal currently hosts more than 50 events annually, attracting nearly 270,000 attendees and has an economic impact of more than $60 million annually,” said Angie Stanland, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Royal. “Last year we awarded $1.4 million in scholarships and support to our youth education programs. Our priorities in the due diligence process were to find a regional home that would allow us to fulfill our mission, accommodate our growing events and allow for future growth,” Stanland explained. “We have found the ideal location to do just that.”

THE SHOWTIMES

32

The American Royal Association, which began as the National Hereford Show in 1899, has evolved into a comprehensive season of events and outreach including six equestrian shows, a livestock show, youth and PRCA rodeos, agricultural education programs and the world’s largest barbecue competition – the World Series of Barbecue®. The new complex will include arena space, exhibit space, high-quality barn/ expo space, and a new agriculture education center and museum. The agricultural education center will provide a state-of-the-art learning experience, covering all facets of the food and agricultural industry. The goal is to provide a unique, interactive food and agricultural learning experience, both indoor and outdoor, to instill a higher level of trust and knowledge about modern food and agricultural practices. “I want Kansas City to be the world leader in agriculture technology and animal genetics,” said Kansas Governor

Sam Brownback. “The American Royal will serve as a focal point in helping us continue to build a vibrant animal and agriculture corridor from Wyandotte County to Manhattan, home of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. This strong partnership between the state of Kansas, Unified Government and the American Royal solidifies the reputation Kansas enjoys as one of the world’s foremost producers and exporters of food and agricultural products.” “Kansas is committed to providing opportunities to encourage additional growth and expansion of agriculture in the state and far beyond its borders" Governor Brownback continued. "A new home for the American Royal complex in Kansas enhances the overall agricultural focus in the state and elevates Kansas’ prominence in the U.S. agricultural industry.”

DOWNLOAD OUR APP

"I'm excited that the American Royal project, after several years of work, is beginning to come together in some very tangible ways," said Mayor Mark Holland, Unified Government of Wyandotte County, Kansas. "The new vision for the Royal that has emerged is a hub and showcase for agriculture and animal science. This new hub has the potential to be a game- changer for the Animal Health Corridor and the Midwest." The addition of the American Royal in the region will enhance the focus on agriculture that has been supported by the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame (NAC) in nearby Bonner Springs. The NAC board expressed its support of the American Royal’s plans: “This is an exciting opportunity for the American Royal and National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame to work together to increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of the state’s leading industry.”

e have always been a family of good food. The history of this area, in southwest Oklahoma, as far as food is concerned, was one of survival, in the generations of family that have come before us. The old ways of cooking and eating, are becoming lost to us now. My grandmother spent hours tending gardens and we ate cheap and we ate really good. We had gardens of okra, tomatoes, carrots, squash, potatoes and other hardy vegetables if we could keep the varmints, the armadillos and the opossums out of them.

As a child, we used to travel to the sandy farms on the river and pick fresh Blackberries and gather peaches from the orchards in Charlie, Texas. Good fruit is and always was hard to come by in this hot and dry climate. The pastures here, produce lots of wild plumb thickets and if you pick them ripe, and put enough sugar in them, they can be delicious as a tart jam on a buttered biscuit. I can remember grocery shopping with my Grandmother, when she would survey the fruits displayed in the cooler. She would inspect a package of strawberries and then put them back, declaring them too expensive. Good fruit has always been a luxury.

Judy Collins - Christy’s mother, with one of her three granddaughters, Cierra Vivian Collins, daughter of Colby and Shellie Collins.

Cooking was never gourmet around here and the ingredients were simple and not always fresh. When I was young, we only went to town once a week, so there was a lot of baking and making the most of what was in the refrigerator, before it went “bad”. My mother and grandmother’s homemade bread would be some of the best I have ever eaten. Heaven came from a scoop of flour, package of yeast, fresh eggs, milk, butter and a dash of salt. My grandmother raised and sold eggs for grocery money,

MADE when she was first married. We had fresh chicken too and I remember my mother killing chickens in the backyard.

These days we don’t worry about having something to eat, as the earlier generations did (that may change someday). We can run to town, buy this or that and purchase already prepared gourmet meals. I am quit certain that the quality of our food has declined drastically over the years and the costs per family have gone way up. We should embrace the old recipes and try to find the time in our lives to be more self-sustaining. Whether it is through our animals, our land or, our making use of other fresh foods. We should eat more simply. My father’s mother, that lived in Stillwater, Opal Collins, used to cook for her day care school of around 60+ kids, everyday for 50 years. She cooked simple meals and I still remember those to this day. There was chipped beef with gravy, my favorite, and the cinnamon toast that only came

on Fridays as a special treat. My maternal grandmother Vivian Kinder spent most of her life in the kitchen. When she wasn’t doing that, she was in the barn, scratching on bulls to tame them down for the bull sales. She was always attentive to the dinner table, and made sure coffee cups and iced tea glasses were always full. She was especially attentive to the men at table. My mother, Judy Collins, has worked hard all her life and still manages to keep everyone fed. I’ve rarely seen my Mom use a recipe. She still cooks on wood several times a week, I think mainly because she likes to be outside. Mom and grandmother always taught me the importance of having a set table and serving food in proper dishes. They would never send food to the table in their cooking ware or their “leftover” containers. I, for one, don’t always uphold this tradition, but I try when it counts. My sister-in-law Shellie is a talented cook and brings to the family many recipes from her Kansas ranching family. Shellie upholds the lunch and dinner routine that many families miss out on today. Now, me, well I have to read the recipe and I’m short on experience, but I appreciate the food background that we have and I appreciate fresh foods. We try to limit all processed foods, reduce sugar and embrace all things homemade. We eat a lot of nuts, and avocados. Some of our most lingering memories are at the dinner table, some good and no doubt some you would like to forget. That’s what makes a family. I would give anything to have another dinner with my grandmother Kinder, looking out across the pasture through the kitchen window, sipping iced tea and finishing the last bit of fried okra that you snuck out before someone else got. Well, that’s about all I know about cooking, I think I’ll go see what Mom has to eat!

43 THE SHOWTIMES

The first grilled steak I ever had, was after I graduated high school. Growing up, we didn’t have a grill, meats were roasted or pan fried. Mostly because there wasn’t a supply of wood and the “backyard grill” was not yet popular. My grandfather Kinder had built a brick smoker for BBQ in his yard, and that’s about all I knew about outdoor cooking, when I was a kid.

NOV/DEC 2016

Home raised beef has always been a part of our family, mostly as survival and when the processed animal was extra fat, it was a special treat. Many times we ate crippled steers that were not nearly fat or cattle that weren’t worth much. We did this to keep from wasting the product. I remember a friend telling me that his grandmother used to give the good meat to her family and she would eat the fat as a means of wasting nothing.

BURT’S BEST BITES

H

ello again! And the whirlwind never stops. I know for a fact that I just sent my article into The Showtimes for the fall issue and now I have another deadline! The one thing I like to do more than sleeping is eating; and I can sure make a hand doing both. I’m going to take a little different direction with this article. I’m going to give you one of my favorite places to stop on the west side of St. Louis while traveling to Louisville. This place is about the halfway point on that sojourn and it’s always good to get out of the vehicle and stretch a bit - and naturally, grab a large bite to eat. Just to tide me over in case I get stuck in traffic in St. Louis. This place was recommended to me some time back, but I can’t remember by whom. But I’m sharing it with you anyway. It is one of the few BBQ places I will recommend and it would be “Super Smokers BBQ” in Eureka, Missouri. Just a hop, skip and jump off of I44. This place is well worth the effort to pull over and take the time to eat some of the best BBQ not to come out of my own back yard! The ribs and brisket are very good; not to mention the BBQ nachos which is something I was reluctant to try, but I was pleasantly pleased. And the prices are very affordable.

Frank’s Meat & Produce 3342 Preston Hwy. Louisville, KY 40213

I’m driving right on into Louisville without stopping so I can dine at one of my favorite places anywhere. That would be “The Cottage Inn.” This place has been around since 1929 and I can understand why. The home cooked type food at this place is almost unbelievable! From the fried chicken, chicken livers, pork chops and let’s not forget the hamburgers - this place is a hidden treasure in Louisville! It is one that you would drive right by and not even give it a second glance. Don’t forget to sample some of the homemade pies and cakes. I usually have to take a piece of the carrot cake to the motel for a midnight snack that doesn’t survive until midnight. I have to apologize for not remembering what night the all you can eat fried chicken and all the trimmings is (old age creeping in), but that my friends is a night to remember.

The prices and portions here are almost too good to be true! Parking is somewhat limited. My next place to share in Louisville would be a place that’s normally not on my desired dinning list - and that would be a pizza joint that Shawn Pieper shared with me years ago. Sure enough, he was right! That would be “Boombozz Pizza and Tap House.” Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t crave pizza very often; but when I do, this place will take care of the craving in very good way! The crust and toppings here are very satisfying; and once again, the prices won’t break the bank. Last, but not least, is a place that I’m going way out of my comfort zone with. That would be “Frank’s Meat & Produce.” The sandwiches at Franks are made to order, the meat and fresh vegetables are put together while you watch with generous portions of both. I mean you can’t get anything like this anywhere else unless you do it yourself at home. Then comes the chili and bean soup that are lip smackin’ good! Plus, don’t forget to order some sliced deli meat to go. I’m thinking I’ve shared enough with you for now. I feel like I’ve gained 5 pounds just writing about these places! Please feel free to share your favorite dining establishments with me and don’t forget to look us up on the Showtimes APP. Safe travels! •

There have been many people that I could consider my role models or that have helped me get to where I’m at today. To begin, my dad and brother helped with judging when I was in 4-H and FFA and those two gentlemen allowed/pushed me in gaining livestock judging experience. Also, Doug Satree hired me fresh out of high school to travel to shows with him all across the United States and has been extremely instrumental in allowing me to experience national livestock events. In addition to that, my mother and my beautiful wife, Lauren, have been two of my biggest supporters. There are many other friends, colleagues, and business partners that have helped me get to where I am today. Without all of these people in my life and the good Lord by my side, I would not have been able to achieve the things that I have today.

M

"WIN TOGETHER, LOSE TOGETHER, FAMILY FIRST ALWAYS."

y name is Brooklyn Curtin and I’m from Oxford, Iowa. I started showing cattle when I was nine years old. Showing is a passion and lifestyle that we chose for our family. My dad and mom are Travis and Mindy Curtin. I have a brother Tanner and a sister Sloane who also show cattle, and are a huge part of my success. We know that as a family, if we want to be successful than we have to put in the time and work needed on all our animals. Early mornings, late nights, working hair, exercising, and rinsing is all worth it when standing in the final drives. When we start each year with a new heifer there is always the uncertainty of what they are going to bring us. Starting out this year I still had this feeling, but there was something special about my commercial heifer. We started out competing at a high level, and were very successful right out of the gate. In May, we put her in the cooler not knowing what she was going to do for us leading into the show season. Before I knew it, it was almost state fair. Iowa State Fair is one of the most

competitive state fairs in the country. Our family knew we had put the work in needed to be successful, but you never really know what to expect. Show day rolls around and we were all filled with nerves. After winning the division it was time to go in for the final drive. Being a part of the Iowa State Fair Final Drive is an honor and a privilege, and something my family will never take for granted. This final drive was even more special because my brother Tanner would also be participating with his Champion Lim-Flex heifer and Reserve Shorthorn Plus heifer. I had butterflies in my stomach, not knowing what would happen. The judge selected the Champion, now it was time for him to select the Reserve. As he walks over to me and selects me as Reserve Grand Champion at the Iowa State Fair, I was flooded with emotions knowing that my family and I just achieved something that we thought we never could. I pulled over to the side with tears in my eyes, and before I knew it Tanner was being selected with his Lim-Flex as 4th overall. Sharing this moment with my brother was the most rewarding moment in my show career.

ADD US!

theshowtimes

Before we could even get out of the state fairgrounds, Tanner and I were asking dad what heifers he thought we would be taking to Ak-SAR-ben in September. We already had our eyes set on the next show. School started that next week, but every day at 3:30 I was at the barn. I was not ready to give up yet. Ak-SAR-ben was here before we knew it. My Commercial heifer made the trip. Sunday was show day, again lots of nerves and lots of butterflies in my stomach. It seemed as though there was more pressure on this day because we wanted this animal to continue to be successful. I was fortunate to make the final drive with my Champion Angus and Champion Commercial heifer. This meant Tanner would have the opportunity to again show in the final drive with me. This was something we had never accomplished before as a family. Walking into the ring not knowing what the outcome was going to be but knowing that we already accomplished one of our goals was a great feeling. I felt like we were already winners. The judge picked his 5th overall - to his Grand Champion. After he selected his top three heifers, my heart was racing as I continued showing. He selected the Reserve, then came and selected me as Grand Champion Overall Breeding Heifer. I cannot even explain how I felt at that moment. We started with these animals when they were babies, not knowing what was going to happen and were able to compete at such a high level. All the early morning and late nights had paid off. All the miles up and down the road and all our hard work was worth it after winning titles of Reserve Grand Champion Heifer at the 2016 Iowa State Fair and the Grand Champion Breeding Heifer at the 2016 Ak-SAR-ben. I was filled with emotions once again.

I am speechless knowing that I just achieved something that is every show kids dream. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped me over the course of the year, Heath and Shelly Mardesen and family, Joe & Kati Burns, Reid Nichols, and Evan Sutton. A very special “Thank you” goes to the Ryan Dunklau Family and Willie Weis family. Ryan has stood behind me and supported my Commercial heifer from Day 1. He believed in me and my heifer, and that is a huge part of being successful. There is just not enough I can say about Willie and his team. I have learned so many things about the cattle industry from Willie. He knows how to challenge me and get me to step out of my comfort zone, he sends encouraging texts to motivate me and push me to the next level, he has shown me how to take fitting to the next level, and most important he has taught me to stay humble. In my heart I know there is no one that believes in my family more than Willie. I hope I can continue to learn from him and grow as a person. The relationship my family has formed with him is something we will cherish for a lifetime. Lastly, none of my accomplishments and success would be possible without my family. Win together, lose together, Family First Always. Thank you to Tanner and Sloane for being my biggest competitors, and my biggest fans. Thank you mom and dad for sacrificing so much and allowing us to do what we love. The lifelong friendships and memories I have made already are priceless. •

gave him the most awesome name I could think of. I got him from our friends Wise Club Lambs on their online sale. I liked him from the start. My ewe was home raised and named “Beatrice”. She was especially difficult to train because of her short temper.

I am in the 8th grade at Platte Valley Middle School and I am in National Jr. Honor Society, Student Council, Middle School FFA, and Kersey Church Youth Group. I play football and I wrestle. It is my 6th year in 4-H, I am the president of my 4-H club and I am on the Weld County livestock judging team. I help my family with our livestock and farming. The wether that I showed was named “Studly McManus”. In all honesty, I pretty much

I feel blessed by the quality of livestock I have been able to show and to be part of the youth livestock industry. I wish that all kids would have the opportunity to show because I have learned so much from it. It has always been fun going to Aksarben. I have been showing since I was five and want to show for as long as I can. If someone were to ask me if I am happy working hard to get only a little, tiny chance I would say absolutely. I am so grateful for my Grandparents, my brother, and my Mom and Dad who have my back and have supported me the whole way. It feels good to have friends and family who care about you. •

howing is definitely my favorite thing to do. Yes, the hours are long and the work is hard, but the reward is sweet when things go your way. At Aksarben, it was a good day before the Heavy weight and the Grand Drive even happened. I had gotten the Reserve Ewe in the sale, won a class, and it was almost my birthday. When the judge chose me for the Grand Champion, the day went from good to amazing.

calves. All he did was circle and give me the slap. All I could do was burst into tears while hugging my mom over the fence. I was overjoyed with all of the support and hugs from everyone around me. Being surrounded by my friends and family made it all worth it. It didn’t matter who was on the end of the halter that day, because we win as a family and more importantly we lose as a family. Earlier in the week I had won Champion Senior Showman as well. I didn’t expect to walk in the barn on Monday morning as the champion showman and walk out that night with not only that but also the Champion Steer banner. I want to say a huge thank you to my grandparents, because they are always at every show no matter how big or how small to support me in my passion of the show cattle industry. •

he steer was originally my brothers for the majority of the year, and we decided to switch him over to me for the state fair. We all went to the state fair with the goal of trying to win champion or reserve in our division, and of course we wanted to win but didn’t want to get the expectations too high. After winning the division all I could think about the rest of the day was what I needed to do to win. I clearly remember walking up to the ring while my mom was telling me that all I could do was show my heart out and the rest we would leave to God. The greatest part was that my brother was also in there with the Champion British Breed Steer. Right after the judge got off the mic he went straight for it. He didn’t take another look at the

was very blessed to show the Grand Champion Steer at this year’s Tulsa State Fair. This was something I had wanted for a long time and it was awesome to finally achieve that goal. I love being at the barn with my steers, but this definitely made it all worthwhile. I would like to thank all of our crew and the Lucky Strike Show Cattle crew for helping get my steer ready at the show. Also a special thanks to my family for helping me all year long. •

GOOD NEWS

THE STEVIE

ADVENTURE

NOV/DEC 2016

“I DON’T WATCH THE NEW MUCH ANYMORE BECAUSE ALL OUR REPORTERS JUST WANT TO REPORT THE BAD. IT’S WHAT SELLS THEY SAY. I WANTED TO BRING ATTENTIONTO PEOPLE THAT THERE ARE FEEL GOOD STORIES. I KNOW IT HAPPENS EVERYDAY IN OUR RURAL COMMUNITIES, BECAUSE IT’S THE WAY FARM FOLKS ARE. OUR 4-H KIDS ARE THE GREATEST YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE WORLD. I HOPE THIS STORY WILL GET SOME FOLKS TO SHARE THEIR STORIES WITH THE SHOWTIMES SO WE CAN START TELLING THE GENERAL PUBLIC HOW GREAT 4-H REALLY IS! GOD BLESS AMERICA.

THE SHOWTIMES

182

BY JEFF MILLER, IN

JEFF’S STORY: Stevie is truly a wonder! I wonder what would have happened if he hadn’t been born? He’s crossed many people’s paths, and all in a little different way, but they were all good ways. Stevie came into this world as a blind, four-legged black and white miracle. He had a twin sister who could see, but she was grafted onto another cow, so not only was Stevie blind but he lost his sister to another cow. I never helped him nurse. He started on his own. His mother is very gentle and I think she knew something was up, because when Stevie was hungry he’d get up,raise his nose in the air and

do about a 180, then slowly find her. He might not quite hit the spot on the first try, but eventually he’d find a teat. I kept Stevie around the barn longer than the other pairs because the pasture where they were headed was full of small streams, hills, trees and coyotes. And after all, I felt like he was my foster child. I took a chance, because most blind calves just walk in circles and usually get heat exhaustion or end up tangled in barbed wire. He and mom took it in stride and never really had any problems. Well, not exactly! My pastures have flowing water several places, so figuring a way for Stevie to cross was sometimes a challenge. He was separated from his mother and the other hundred pairs one evening as I was doing heat checks. They were about a half mile apart with a corn field and hills separating them, so neither could hear the other bawling. I tried driving each of them different times, with no success. So I got in front of Stevie on my four wheeler and bawled like a cow. Stevie did his famous nose in the air and slowly followed. I’d bawl. He’d bawl in return. It took a while, but we made it. The reunion was gladly appreciated by mom and calf. The rest of the summer was pretty uneventful until the six-inch rain in about an hour during the county fair. Stevie ended up in the creek in a raging flood. I watched as he bobbed up and down as the current washed him down the creek. The bank is really steep

where he went in so he had to rely on mother nature to help him. And she did! A small tree slowed him down enough that he got his footing, and up the bank he went to his waiting mom. Weaning time came and Stevie was treated like the rest of the calves. So Stevie became a show steer. He was tied and rinsed like the rest of his buddies, but of course he received extra care from the help because he was Stevie. Picture day came. And boy, did he shine, as you can tell by the photos. As we got closer to sale day, my friend Floyd gave me the idea to do a benefit for blind children. The idea stuck. We raised $3,850, which was given to the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. It went toward the blind division. The giving part of this story has been the most rewarding part of “The Stevie Adventure.”

Two weeks later, Stevie arrived at our PA farm. He was cute, friendly and super lovable. When he arrived in his new pen, he walked in circles until he hit the side of the gates where he then knew his surroundings. He quickly adjusted to his new surroundings and was eating and drinking in no time. He became comfortable very fast. He instantly was a hit in our barn. If you were having a bad day and needed a pick me up, you would just go to the barn and visit Stevie. He always was happy and excited to see you. When walking Stevie, your hand always had to be touching his face or he would not move. He instantly became attached to his new owner Hannah. She could walk him all over our farm. he followed her everywhere. In September, while at our county fair, Stevie was the center of attention. Everyone loved him. He had the opportunity to bless the life of two blind young ladies. They were so excited to meet an animal that was blind. They didn’t know animals could also be blind - they thought it was just humans. It was breathtaking to watch as the girls, who couldn’t see Stevie, touched his head. Although Stevie couldn’t see them, he communicated with a loving “Moo.” Their faces lit up with smiles when they heard him talking to them. It was a true blessing to see how he impacted them. When our 12-year-old daughter Hannah auctioned off Stevie at our local county fair, she decided that she wanted to use Stevie to bless someone else’s life. She raised money for a family friend, 13-year-old, Zeke Mumma. Zeke was hospitalized at 8 months of age for an unusual case of bacterial pneumonia; leaving him blind, g-tube fed, immobile, rigid and irritable. The night of the sale, Zeke and his family came to meet Stevie. We got many photographs of them all together. Stevie was sold to Brian Oberholtzer, an Auctioneer for Horning Farm Agency. Then numerous other buyers contributed funds to support the Mumma Family. A few weeks later, an article was run in our local newspaper. At this point, $3,280.00 has been raised to support Zeke. After the auction, Hannah’s grandfather purchased Stevie so he could come back home. Stevie has forever impacted our lives and we would love to see him find a home where he could be a blessing to many each and every day. •

183 THE SHOWTIMES

Jeff MIller with Stevie on picture day.

Last September we were approached by a family friend who told us about a blind steer being on an online auction. He told us that a certain percent of his auction price would be given to a children’s hospital for the blind. He agreed to help us purchase the steer. We bid on the steer at the online auction and won the bid.

I’ve showed and sold many champions, and Stevie is the one calf I will probably remember the most. Tears were shed by people who raised calves on the farm when he hopped on the trailer headed east. The driver was given special orders to take good care of him. Stevie arrived in Pennsylvania and started a new life with Hanna, who became his new foster parent. Thank you, Hanna, for caring for Stevie.

PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS:

INFLUENCE

®

LODESTAR GUIDANCE BY WEAVER LEATHER LIVESTOCK

WHAT IS INFLUENCE? Influence is the power to affect, guide and shape the opinions and actions of others without making them feel pressured. It is a way to motivate your fellow showmen toward common goals. Hand-in-hand with sportsmanship in and out of the show ring, influence equips you to leave a legacy that will outlast you, extend your reach, provide you with new opportunities and help you become a better industry leader. Throughout your show career, you’ll come across people who will influence you both positively and negatively. It’s important to keep in mind the main components that make up influence while being sure to keep in check things that stand in the way of being an influential person. Check out the following list of Do’s and Don’ts of influential people. 188

DON’T COMPROMISE YOUR MORALS: BE TRUSTWORTHY: Trust is an extremely

important piece of having strong personal character. When people trust you and feel that they are trusted by you, the more likely you are to have an impact in their lives and be looked up to as a role model in the livestock industry.

When you lie, cheat, bend the show rules, break promises, neglect your chores and more, you prove that you can’t be trusted and your influence as someone credible becomes insignificant. Always do what’s right rather than compromising your principles.

DON’T HAVE BAD MANNERS: You may

STAND UP FOR YOURSELF: Standing up

not agree with other peoples’ routines or way of doing things, but the manner in which you disagree says a lot about your character. And always remember that kindness and a simple “please” or “thank you” go a long way.

BE RELIABLE: Over time, you can build a

DON’T HAVE A BAD ATTITUDE: A bad, cynical attitude will get you nowhere. It’s easy to be negative when things don’t go your way in the ring or you don’t feel like working with your animals. Keeping a good, positive attitude is your chance to see the silver lining of your hard work.

for yourself and your ideas openly and honestly are common traits of influential people. When you do so in a positive, non-threatening way while respecting others’ opinions, they respect yours in return. reputation of being responsible and reliable as you stick to commitments, follow through on promises, avoid making unreasonable promises, deal with any setbacks faced with your livestock projects, and much more.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? REMOVE LABELS, KEEP GOD FIRST AND RUN THE RACE OF LIFE TO WIN. BY PASTOR RANDY DAVIS, LIMA, OH

HOW WE MET RANDY We met Randy Davis when we visited Lima, Ohio for Maine Junior Nationals back in 2012. He is the Winegardner family's pastor. They had asked him to give a sermon during the show. We were greatly impressed with Randy. Since then, we have listened to his sermons in our office from time to time. When Brad Winegardner came out to Colorado to judge our show we visited about having Randy write a message for our upcoming issues. We hope you enjoy his message!

W

hat’s in a name? When I say Peyton Manning what do you think of? How about John Deere? Colorado? Florida? California? How about your name? What do people think of when they hear your name? Do you realize that all of us are here for a purpose? We are here to making a name for ourselves whether we realize it or not. So if everyone on this earth has a purpose why do we classify people the way we do? All of us have a purpose for being here, so let’s do this thing called “LIFE” together. We are all running the race of life, why not run to win? Listen to this scripture: 1 Corinthians 9:24 You know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize. So run to win! NCV You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. The Message Run to win! Who runs to lose? Who plays sports and goes out and says, “let’s go boys; it is time to

lose.” Yet many reading this article are facing life like a self-proclaimed loser. Some of your own making, some is from others. Some of you have given up on doing life right because of others’ judgment on you.

In the same way you judge others, you too will be judged. If you are harsh, people will be harsh with you. These are great verses to live life by. And don’t let others quick judgment of you define you. We must know who we are regardless of what others may think. Is there someone who caused you to give up on faith? Galatians 6:7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? Think with me for minute: If you are not running your life all out for God, why not? Is there a person who caused you to quit believing in God? Are they worth missing heaven over? Do you realize that someone you don’t even like is keeping you away from the best life possible? Is it the label they gave you that is holding you back? Maybe it is time to trade in their label. Maybe it is

John 10:10 He came that we may have life and have it to the full! The Message says: I came so they can have real and eternal life, a more and better life than they ever dreamed of. I’m ready for that kind of life. Are you? You were created for greatness, why settle for anything less? You were fearfully and wonderfully made! So here is the plan, keep God first, and run this race of life to win. And encourage others to go with you. Let go of the labels others have put on and let’s do life God’s way. Don’t just run in life, Run to Win! What is one name you would like to trade about yourself? Maybe you gave it to yourself or maybe someone else did. What would it be? What would you want your new label to be? I would also like to encourage each of you to allow people to replace their own labels by giving them another chance. Life is too short to hold grudges or unforgiveness for something that may have been done in haste or by accident. Life is way more fun if we assume the best in people instead of always living paranoid reading between the lines in a pessimistic way. •

205 THE SHOWTIMES

Here is another great verse of why we should not be so quick to judge or label others before we get to know them: Matthew 7:1-2: 1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Matthew 6:23 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Put God first and everything else in life works out. Put Him anywhere else in your life and it will not end well for you. God has a great life planned for you and I advise you to not let anyone get in between you and your relationship with God. How good is God’s life for you?

NOV/DEC 2016

And let me insert some advice that can serve us all well. Don’t trust your first instinct on judging others. What if you meet someone in a rush or in a frazzled condition? (which is true of many during show conditions) What if you judge someone because of what you heard from someone else? Would you like others to give you the benefit of the doubt? Why is it so hard for us to do what we want others to do for us? Sounds like the “Golden Rule” to me. Do to others what you would have them do to you.

time for change!

A SPECIAL TRIBUTE...TRUSTING GOD’S TIMING. BY RYAN SCHLIPF, TREE LANE FARMS

JACOB COLMONE

FEBRUARY 4, 1993 - JULY 20, 2015

I’m up early these days because I find mornings are the hardest here at Tree Lane Farms because I know Jake’s truck is not going to drive up the lane. I’m not going to meet him in the driveway with a cup of coffee as Jake jumps out with his smile, excited for the day’s adventures. I ride my four-wheeler through pastures with cows with the sun coming up and dew on the green grass, and I reflect on every project of fence building, putting in posts, digging and concreting the corner posts which are still almost wet with the names “Jake and Tucker 2015”, scratched in with a stick or nail. Every pasture has a calf in it that Jake and I saved at birth, gave a shot to, or rounded up and my mind still asks “Why Jake?”

I used to tell people and family that if you had five Jakes you have an undefeated basketball team; if you had 11 you have an undefeated football team. If you had a company of Jakes, you have a successful company. He never complained; he always was pumped, and he worked harder than anyone. As Bodee would say, “Jake is a gamer; you want to hang out with him and if you went to war you want him by your side.”

This morning as I rode I reflected on the year and on

As I drove the pasture with those words “I”LL TAKE JAKE” rolling through my mind, it hit me. God knows the troubles of this world and the spiritual battles to be fought as He reflects on the future. I believe He was picking His team and on Monday I think he asked Jesus “who do we have?” And Jesus said, “I’LL TAKE JAKE.” •

our farm, especially this summer. I thought of our conversations as family. My dad would usually start late Sunday afternoon asking, “What’s the plan of attack on Monday?” I would tell him the priority list and he would ask, “Who do we have for help?” My reply was almost always the same. “Tucker and Sawyer have football or basketball till around 9:00 then they will be home. We have Bodee, Codee and Jake.” I knew that with that group no task was too big, no project too hard; with that team we would figure out a way to attack the week. Many times dividing the team and one of us saying, “Bodee can do this; Codee can start that and when Tucker and Sawyer get home they can work with you and I’ll take Jake.” These words have haunted me all morning, “I’LL TAKE JAKE.”

ur family, like so many others, are grieving the loss of Jake and trying to find some peace, some logic in his death. Like many, can’t help but ask why? Why did God take Jake? I have faith and count my blessings. I have tried to say what you know you should say around others, “God has a plan” and believe it with all my heart. My dad says tragedies like these try your faith and he is talking about this particular situation.

M&M CATTLE COMPANY A LIFE SHAPED BY THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY.

T

BY: MEGAN BLANKENSHIP, NY

here are very few scenarios in which a boy from Tennessee living in Iowa and a girl from New York happen to meet in Louisville, Kentucky. We will be forever thankful for our involvement in cattle shows that we did happen to cross paths at that perfect moment! Four years later our lives look a whole lot different, but we still celebrate our initial anniversary in Louisville and that’s one thing that will hopefully never change. My husband, Matthew Blankenship, and I (Megan) own and operate M&M Cattle Company located in West Burlington, New York. In January, we missed Denver for the first time in many years for a pretty good reason - we welcomed our first child January 18th. Adalynn Grace loves the cattle just as much as we do and seeing her enthusiasm for everything around the farm has certainly added a whole new level of excitement to our world. Both Matt and I grew up involved with livestock and we hope to give the same experiences to our little one. Matthew grew up on a small multi breed operation outside Nashville, Tennessee and was actively involved in numerous breed associations in addition to local 4H and FFA programs. His parents, Mark and

Marianne along with grandparents Frank and Peggy Wilson and sister Mallorie continue to maintain a herd of Charolais and Simmental cattle in Nolensville, TN. Extended family show pigs, run dairy cattle, show steers and breeding cattle as well. With so much of his time spent in the show barn or traveling to livestock shows with family and friends, Matthew developed a deep love of the cattle industry that has shaped his life. Although he attended college at Middle Tennessee State

University and went through EMT training, he couldn’t shake his desire to stay involved with the cattle industry. Thanks to friendships and connections made during his junior show career and time spent on the Chi Junior board, he found his way to Damar Farm in Wisconsin and managed their show cattle during their formative stage. While there, he was fortunate to work with Roger Allen - a man he still considers a role model and mentor. During the years that followed, he worked both in Illinois on Allen’s X5 Ranch and then

as the show and sale cattle manager for KenCo in Tennessee. Another connection created through junior programs led to Matthew’s next opportunity. Josh Elder was a lifelong friend and when given the chance to move to Iowa and work with Josh at Sullivan Farms, Matthew made the decision to relocate once more. He joined the crew at Sullivan’s prior to their sale in 2012 and spent the next few years working with elite cattle and some of the best people in the industry. Josh was, and continues to be, another of the people Matthew has learned the most from. Matt is extremely appreciative of the entire

opportunities to learn and immerse myself in the Hereford industry. The Jensens took me to shows and put me to work on their ranch where I selected cattle to add to my own program, cattle who are still influential in our herd today. I spent some time teaching at NEO A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma before returning to New York to take a much larger role in managing our farm. My parents both work off the farm, so the cattle operation needed someone full time and I was excited to be that person. As a supplemental job, I expanded a long time second passion of taking pictures into a career. Linde Sutherly gave me a chance to cover some shows for her, and with her guidance I discovered a love for livestock photography that changed my life. In the years that followed, I spent a lot of time at shows across the country - Denver, Kansas City, Houston, NILE, San Antonio and more - learning and working with some of ShowChampions elite photographers - Alan Browarny, Bruce Kuehl, Jay Kazen and Katie Fields. As I gained knowledge and experience, I developed M&M photography personally to cover livestock events and shoot both livestock and human photos. The years spent in the ring and at the backdrop have fostered friendships and connections with so many amazing people and I’m beyond

crew at Sullivan’s along with the Sullivan family themselves for the great experiences and education he received as part of their operation. He continues to work with them during sale season and at shows whenever it fits our schedule. My exposure to agriculture started at the beginning as well. Born into a fifth generation farm family in upstate New York, I loved everything about our rural upbringing. My parents, Curtis and Susan Ackerman, involved my siblings Sara and Sam along with myself in 4H and junior programs when I was 10 and I was hooked. I was an extremely shy kid and without my years spent showing cattle, I’m not sure I ever would have overcome that challenge. Those friendships made and the trips we took as a family to cattle shows really shaped my life. My desire to find a career in the cattle industry led me to Kansas State University and degrees in Ag Communications and Animal Science. That education and the people I met during those years were vital to making my dreams become a reality. With me away from home, my parents maintained my herd of Hereford females started from just a few heifers purchased with my childhood savings account. While in school, I was blessed to find my way to Courtland, Kansas. Kevin, Sheila, Brady, Brooke and Ben Jensen became like a second family and gave me even more

NOV/DEC 2016

I met Matthew who was there with Sullivan’s. Although it’s a small world and our paths had crossed randomly before, it was not until we were introduced following the Shorthorn show that we truly met. By the end of our third day together, he told me we were getting married…and he was right! A year and a half later we became husband and wife on a beach in St. Lucia surrounded by family and friends. Our long distance relationship was planned around cattle shows and sales and calving season and breeding season - typical of any farm couple. I moved to Iowa for 6 months not long after we got engaged and also joined the Sullivan’s crew during that time. grateful to have such wonderful people in my life. blessed to have an easy going little girl who’s happiest outside and fits right into our daily lives whether at home or at shows with cattle or even taking pictures. My parents help out endlessly and make it possible for us to be away when needed or watch Adalynn when we have tasks that aren’t easy to do with a baby in tow! My dad is involved with making feed for the cattle and though my mom isn’t from an ag background, she pitches in and encourages us every step of the way. The cattle industry itself is like a large extended family and in her first 8 months Adalynn has traveled extensively with us and met many of the same great people we value so much. Seeing her joy at experiencing daily farm life or traveling to new places makes every moment that much better and we are so excited to see her develop friendships and make memories showing cattle as she grows up. As our friends add little ones to their lives as well, it’s so much fun to share the new joys and challenges that come with raising a family. It’s the greatest blessing to be a part of this wonderful industry and we are so thrilled to now have the privilege of raising our daughter in this same industry that shaped our lives and brought us together. •

YEARBOOK THE NOV/DEC 2016 YEAR END EDITION MARKS THE FINAL ISSUE OF 2016. WE REFLECT ON A GREAT YEAR OF LIVESTOCK SHOWS BY FEATURING THE CHAMPIONS OF 2016, AS WELL AS SOME OF OUR FAVORITE FEATURES, ADS AND FACES AND PLACES! PLUS, WE ANNOUNCE OUR EXHIBITORS OF THE YEAR!

THE BEST OF 2016

THE SHOWTIMES

226

2016 was our biggest year yet at The Showtimes. It has been fun watching our magazine grow from issue to issue and year to year. Our State Fair Edition alone was 122 pages bigger than last year’s issue and was 602 pages total making it the biggest issue we have ever printed. In fact, it was the biggest livestock show magazine ever printed! More advertisements, more Show Results and more Features have made an impact. We traveled across the country to shows and events. We enjoyed visiting with readers and exhibitors in Denver, Springfield, Grand Island, Des Moines, Pueblo, Omaha and Kansas City. Back in 2007 when we started The Showtimes, we wanted to be different than everyone else. We wanted The Showtimes to be about you, not only ads. We molded The Showtimes into a publication that is all about you. We wanted to bring you designs, photos and videos that have never been done in our industry. We always push ourselves further with each issue. We feel the most important part is traveling to shows and getting each issue into the showman’s hands. The showman are our advertiser’s target market. They are the ones who purchase show cattle, supplies,

feed and other products that are advertised in our magazine. The response has been overwhelming. In addition to the magazine, our videos and promotional items have been a big hit. Earlier this year we release our #ThisIsWhyWeShow hash-tag encouraging all of our readers to let us know why they show on social media. It has been incredible seeing how it has been used across the country. Look for our new This Is Why We Show® video this November! The Yearbook has become one of our favorite features in The Showtimes. It gives us a chance to reflect on the past year and share that with our readers. We’ve put together some of our favorite features, Faces and Places, Show Results and Hall of Fame members. Plus, we reveal our five new Exhibitors of the Year, Steers of the Year, Heifers of the Year and Hogs, Lambs and Goats of the Year on the following pages. We hope you enjoy our 2016 Yearbook! We have big plans for 2017!

IN ADDITION TO THE UNITED STATES, THE SHOWTIMES HAS SPONSORED SHOWS IN CANADA AND AUSTRALIA!

THE BEST OF THE BEST Once again this year, we are recognizing five individuals that have risen to the top. Showing livestock at a competitive level is never easy. It takes hard work, knowledge, dedication and sometimes even a little luck to be successful. This year we are honoring Sara Sullivan, Macey Goretska, Chesney Effling, Colt Cunningham and Austin Nowatzke! There were so many exhibitors across the country that won multiple shows, that it was hard to narrow our list down to five. Not only did these five win, they won big. Everyone of these showman dominated shows this past year. Congratulations on being The Showtimes’ Exhibitors of the Year!

THE SHOWTIMES WELCOMES ALAN MILLER TO OUR HALL OF FAME!

A

ALAN MILLER HALL OF FAME

griculture has always been a mainstay in Alan Miller's life. Starting with a base of Angus cattle his grandfather, Adam Schlipf, started in the 1940s (that his father revitalized after his family's focus geared more towards crops in the 1960s), Adam has dedicated his life to the Angus breed and livestock industry as a whole. His passion for Angus started as a junior exhibitor where he established a love for competition and the Junior programs. During his Junior show career, he served on the National Junior Angus Association board of directors.

THANK YOU ARIN STRASBURG FOR PHOTOS

Prairie View Farms was Alan's opportunity to drive on into the industry that he loved. After his last Junior shows in 1994, at the age of 21, Alan invested in Davis

Proven Queen 3026 - the foundation donor for Prairie View Farms. After graduating from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (U of I), the sky was the limit for PVF. Throughout the years, Alan's operation has produced high quality Angus cattle that have found great success in the show ring. Today, Alan along with his wife Theresa and children Amelia, Adam and Will continue on with the legacy that is Prairie View Farms. Like many others in the industry, Alan has made an impact through the combination of hard work and ambition. According to Alan, "The neat thing about the cattle business in my experience is that it provides opportunities where the only limiting factor is yourself." Alan has judged numerous state and national livestock shows, and has been active in the Illinois Angus Association as sale chairman. On a daily basis, he continues to give back to the industry that we all call home. •

BEYOND THE REASON

PAYTON

• judging results AMERICAN ROYAL

HOW ONE’S THIRST FOR SUCCESS LANDED HIM ON TOP.

V

BY: PAYTON DAYMER, BUTLER

ince Lombardi once said, “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” I have had many people reiterate this quote to me throughout my life, and I strive to keep it in my mind at all times. My name is Payton Dahmer, and I am a sophomore at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. Originally, I hail from the small town of Nevada, Missouri, where I grew up raising and showing hogs and sheep competitively, in addition to being highly active in both 4-H and FFA. I come from a family deeply rooted in the agriculture industry, so it was only natural that I take to it as well. At the age of 8, my dad pushed me to participate in the youth judging contest at our county fair, where little did I know, I would establish a passion that has carried me to where I am today. Over the course of the next several years, I was fortunate enough to spend countless hours on the road with both my 4-H and FFA judging teams, resulting in an AllAmerican title for me at the National 4-H contest, a team championship at the National Western Stock Show, and the opportunity to compete at the Royal Highland Show in Scotland.

Being at Butler has unquestionably been the best decision I have ever made. My seven teammates, all from every corner of the country, have become my second family, and I know that these friendships will last a lifetime. During our freshman year we were fortunate enough to have a great deal of success, both as a team and individually. However, all of that was just in preparation for what we knew really mattered; our national contests sophomore year.

As the great Lombardi said, there is no aspect in life where the reward of success can come without the work to earn it. At the top of each steno pad I open, I write his quote, to serve as encouragement to always strive for greatness. As I look to my future, I have big goals. I plan to transfer to a university following my time at Butler, and double major in Animal Science and Ag Business. As my time at Butler quickly comes to a close, I can’t help but be thankful for the many blessings I have been given. However, for now, it’s back to the grind of working tirelessly as we prepare to take on Louisville. •

275 THE SHOWTIMES

Winning the contest at the American Royal was truly one of the best days of my life, only because it meant that all those years of dedication had paid off. Certainly, there’s still room for improvement. With that being said, my teammates and I are all thirsty for success and know that we can’t become complacent after one win, as there are many other contests down the road. Without the unique coaching pair of Marcus and Taylor, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Their talents have served as a great force to teach and push me to be the best stockman I can be, but more importantly to be a better person. They have instilled the idea within me that there is nothing more important than winning with humility and losing with grace. In addition to both of these men, I personally would like to thank my 4-H coach, Marty Miller, for his many years of volunteering to my teammates and me. Along with him, Justin Rogers has served as an integral person in my ability to see livestock and has been a constant source of support. Last, but definitely not least, I want to thank my family for allowing me to do what I love and for raising me upon the idea that you must go out and chase the things you want in life.

NOV/DEC 2016

The eight of us made it back to Eldo this summer to begin what would be many long practices, late nights, and numerous sets of reasons given in order to be successful. Since then we have worked our tails off, and it was gratifying to see all our hard work pay off recently in Kansas City, where we were named the High Team Overall by winning every division at the American Royal. As for myself, I was fortunate enough to stand 4th in the Sheep/Goat division, 3rd in Hogs, 2nd in Cattle, and 1st in Reasons, resulting in being named the High Individual Overall.

KANSAS CITY

Growing up with a coach who attended Butler, in addition to many family friends, I was frequently exposed to the judging program and coaches there. When it came time to choose where I’d head to after graduating high school, I searched around, and Butler was quick to stand out as the place for me. Aside from the nationally recognized success of Butler judging teams, the morals, character, and knowledge of Marcus Arnold and Taylor Frank sold me on making the move to El Dorado.

MEET THE EXHIBITOR

GRACIE RUSSELL

I started showing cattle when I was seven years old. My first calf was a ShorthornPlus heifer named Lucy, ever since then I have shown steers. Some of my favorite moments in the ring have been at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, including Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer in 2012 and Champion Intermediate Showman in 2014. Other highlights of my show career include Reserve Overall Market Steer at the Iowa State Fair in 2011 and winning Iowa Beef Expo in 2012. I am thankful for all of the memories I have gained and people I have met through showing cattle. It has definitely shaped me into who I am today. •

295 THE SHOWTIMES

y name is Gracie Russell. I grew up on a diversified row crop and livestock farm in Southwest Iowa. Rob and Julie Russell are my parents. I have a sister JaLynne, her husband Ben and nephew Grayson. I also have a brother, Keaton, his fiancé Paige and nephew Cohen. I enjoy spending time with all of my family and cherish the moments we have together. I am a Freshman at Iowa State University studying Agriculture Business and minor in Political Science. Following Iowa State, I would like to attend Drake University to attain my Ag Law Degree. Other than that, I am not sure what I want to do for a job or what my future holds for a career. When I am not working on calves or working on homework, I love spending time with my friends and participating in other various activities at Iowa State. I also enjoy playing tennis and watching Netflix. I have been involved in the livestock industry since I was three years old when my sister started showing. I loved to go out and help her and my brother with their animals, even though I’m sure I was a bother to them. I appreciated them letting me help because that it where my love and passion for cattle started. Since then, I have loved every aspect of it from raising cattle to buying them and showing them. I also enjoyed judging livestock in high school and have considered the judging team at ISU when I am an upperclassman.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

DON'T BLINK

S

THANK YOU!

LOOKING AHEAD! BY LISA, REID, CO

Stay tuned at midnight on New Year's Eve for the release of our January/ February 2017 10th Anniversary Edition! It will be something you won't want to miss. The Showtimes is our Disneyland. An outlet to push the limits and take the livestock industry where it has never been before. We invite you to enjoy and be a part of the ride! •

Lisa Reid Owner, Editor

We would like to thank everyone who helps distribute and promote The Showtimes Magazine to shows, sales and events across the country!

THE SHOWTIMES

While it makes me feel old, I have absolutely loved having a front row seat at witnessing kids grow up in the livestock industry. Kids who's dads were wearing Showtimes hats when they were born are now leading cattle

into the show ring. Exhibitors who I worked with when I was a Junior Board Member are now on Junior Boards of their own, getting degrees and working towards making their own footprint on the industry and world. It is the people involved, the love of competition, and the unquestionable fact that this industry instills skills and life lessons found in no other lifestyle that are the driving force behind this magazine and company.

NOV/DEC 2016

omething BIG is coming. As I write this, we are exactly 65 days out from the ball dropping into 2017. January will be a milestone for The Showtimes as it marks our 10th Anniversary! Kenny Chesney's song "Don't Blink" comes to mind. It feels like just yesterday Brian, Laurie and I were tackling the idea of starting a Junior Livestock Magazine. We were blind to the fact that our passion for the livestock industry would lead us to where we are today. I have seen how every person has a story and a purpose. And when driven by passion and for the right reasons, anything is possible.
